Some installations generate co-creative processes in real-time, while others promote a dialogue between the visitors. All these [inter]relations between different persons and between them and the artworks produce an exhibition in which the viewer is the main protagonist.
Espaço Atrium (piso 0) Construção do Lugar é um convite a uma viagem sensorial à história do Palácio da Inquisição e suas ocupações mais emblemáticas: Inquisição, Hotel e Instituto de Estudos Superiores. A exposição culmina na exibição de um filme sobre o projeto de intervenção e requalificação do edifício e suas novas funções de centro de arte e cultura dedicado às expressões artísticas contemporâneas.
Meeting of Specialists Beyond Media To mark the closing of the exhibition, the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida will hold a meeting of specialists to be held under the general theme Beyond Media on April 12, starting at 4.30pm. The initiative aims to foster the dialogue and debate between artists, theorists and practitioners from different cultural fields while focusing on the issues raised by the growing use of new media in contemporary art. The debate will be attended by Isabel Carlos, Curator and Director of the Centro de Arte Moderna, Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian; Claudia Giannetti, Curator of Inter[in]venção; António Olaio, Director of the Colégio das Artes, Universidade de Coimbra; Delfim Sardo, Curator and Professor at the Colégio das Artes, Universidade de Coimbra; and Julião Sarmento, Visual Artist. Maria Teresa da Cruz, Professor at Universidade Nova de Lisboa, will moderate the debate. The meeting will be preceded by a guided tour of the exhibition, at 3pm, with Sónia Alves, collaborator at the ZKM | Media Museum, and Master in Communication and Arts. The initiative is organized by the Fundação Eugénio de Almeida and the Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Linguagem (Center for the Study of Language and Communication), FCSH/Universidade Nova.
CONSTRUÇÃO DO LUGAR
BUILDING OF THE PLACE Atrium space (floor 0) July 11, 2013 - June 29, 2014 Building of the Place is an invitation to a sensory journey within the history of the Palácio da Inquisição (Palace of the Inquisition) and the history of its most notable functions: as the Inquisition’s headquarters, as a Hotel, and University. The exhibition culminates in the screening of a film describing the guidelines of the architectural project for the renovation and rehabilitation of the building, now a center for the arts and culture, especially dedicated to contemporary art.

INTER [ IN ] VENÇÃO Coleção ZKM | Karlsruhe
Sala de exposições temporárias (pisos 1 e 2) Inter[in]venção apresenta uma ampla seleção de obras da coleção do conceituado ZKM | Center of Art and Media Karlsruhe, Alemanha, o mais importante centro de arte e tecnologia do mundo. Com um total de 33 obras de 39 artistas – cuja trajetória e reconhecimento internacional os situam entre os mais relevantes no contexto da arte contemporânea –, a exposição oferece um panorama abrangente da produção de media art desde a década de 1960 até à atualidade. Os trabalhos convidam o espetador à participação sensorial ou à atuação dentro – [in] – ou no contexto da obra. Algumas instalações geram processos de cocriação em tempo real, outras estimulam o diálogo entre os visitantes. A partir desta [inter-]relação entre as pessoas e entre elas e as obras, o público torna-se o grande protagonista desta exposição.

OSCAR MUÑOZ
Projeto para um memorial Sala Rostrum (piso 0) Memória e esquecimento são objetos de análise em todas as culturas e épocas. Nesta exposição, Oscar Muñoz aborda esta dicotomia através de duas obras. A videoinstalação Projeto para um memorial regista o processo de criação de retratos de pessoas concretas através da pintura com água sobre uma pedra ao sol. A impermanência inevitável deste registo e a fragilidade do ser são tão manifestas como a necessidade do ato incessante de recriação. Presença e ausência, assim como realidade e ficção são também temas centrais da série fotográfica O olhar do Ciclope. Desde a antiguidade, as máscaras mortuárias funcionavam como "fotografias" tridimensionais, como sucedâneas da presença dos corpos prestes a desaparecer. Em ambas as obras, Muñoz estabelece uma analogia entre imagem presente e corpo ausente, como referência poética, mas também crítica, aos processos de preservação e destruição da memória e da história.
Encontro de especialistas Para além dos media A assinalar o encerramento da exposição, tem lugar, no dia 12 de abril, às 16h30, o Encontro Para além dos media, uma iniciativa que reúne artistas, teóricos e profissionais de diferentes âmbitos da cultura numa conversa em torno da temática da expansão do uso dos novos meios na arte contemporânea. Participam no debate: Isabel Carlos, Curadora e Diretora do Centro de Arte Moderna da Fundação Calouste Gulbenkian; Claudia Giannetti, Curadora de Inter[in]venção; António Olaio, Diretor do Colégio das Artes da Universidade de Coimbra; Delfim Sardo, Curador e Professor no Colégio das Artes da Universidade de Coimbra e Julião Sarmento, Artista Plástico. Moderação a cargo de Maria Teresa Cruz, Professora na Universidade Nova de Lisboa. O Encontro é antecedido de uma visita guiada à exposição, pelas 15h00, com Sónia Alves, Mestre em Comunicação e Artes e colaboradora do Media Museum do ZKM. Esta iniciativa é organizada pela Fundação Eugénio de Almeida e Centro de Estudos de Comunicação e Linguagem da FCSH/Universidade Nova.

Temporary exhibition room (1st and 2nd floor) November 29, 2013 - April 13, 2014 Inter[in]vention presents a wide selection of works from the Collection ZKM | Center for Art and Media Karlsruhe, Germany the world's most important center for art and technology. Comprising thirty-three pieces by thirty-nine artists—whose trajectory and international standing place them among the most influential in the context of contemporary art—the exhibition offers a comprehensive view of media art production from the 1960s to the present day. The artworks invite the viewer to a sensory participation or even to act with[in] the piece.
Rostrum room (floor 0) March 28, 2014 - June 29, 2014 Memory and forgetfulness are object of analysis in all cultures and times. In this exhibition, Oscar Muñoz approaches this dichotomy with two artworks. The video installation Project for a Memorial depicts the creation of several portraits of real persons, painted in water on a hot stone. The necessity for the unceasing act of creation is as evident as are the fragility of being, and the inevitable transience and fragility of these portraits. Presence and absence, as well as reality and fiction, are also central themes in the photographic series The Cyclops Gaze. Since antiquity, death masks have been used as three-dimensional ‘photos’, as substitutes for disappearing bodies. In both pieces, Muñoz establishes an analogy between the present image and the absent body; a poetical and critical reference to the processes that preserve or destroy memory and history.
MARTA PALAU Tránsitos de Naualli
Sala de exposições temporárias (piso 1) No ano em que se celebra os 150 anos de relações diplomáticas entre o México e Portugal, o Fórum Eugénio de Almeida apresenta a exposição Tránsitos de Naualli da artista Marta Palau.
Perante uma visão de mundo ditada a partir da lógica do poder, a artista propõe a criação artística como uma opção que mantém um compromisso com a realidade, enquanto procura restaurar a nossa relação com a terra, a memória e o pensamento, que reconhece na essência dos rituais e mitos formas de resistência. Palau encontrou na figura de Naualli – bruxa, vidente, curandeira – uma representação simbólica desse poder criativo que, a partir da arte, convoca à resistência através da imaginação ativa, reconciliando o arcaico com o presente e encontrando novas formas de interpretar os traços individuais e coletivos. Tránsitos de Naualli propõe uma viagem por alguns dos caminhos percorridos por esta Naualli: a sua celebração do feminino, a sua atenção aos mitos de origem e migração, o seu interesse pelos imaginários mágicos e proféticos. Ao conjurar sinais nutridos do passado, Palau nunca descura o presente; na sua arte, a atualidade encontra um significado profundo e vital.
MARTA PALAU - Tránsitos de Naualli Temporary exhibition room (1st floor) May 8, 2014 - October 5, 2014 In the year in which we celebrate the 150th anniversary of the Portuguese-Mexican diplomatic relations, the Fórum Eugénio de Almeida presents the exhibition Tránsitos de Naualli by Mexican artist Marta Palau. Confronted with a worldview driven by the logic of power, the artist proposes artistic creation as an option that maintains a commitment to reality, while seeking to restore our relationship with the land, memory, and thought; recognizing forms of resistance in the essence of rituals and myths. In the figure of the Naualli—a witch, seer, or healer— Palau finds a symbolic representation of a creative power that, through art, calls for a resistance based on an active imagination, reconciling the archaic with the present, leading to the discovery of new ways of how to interpret our individual and collective traits. Tránsitos de Naualli proposes a journey through some of the paths taken by this Naualli: her celebration of the feminine, her attention to the myths of origin and the myths of migration, her devotion to the magical and prophetic. Conjuring signs from the past, Palau never neglects the present: in her artwork the contemporary is always of a profound and vital importance.

CARLOS FADON VICENTE Cenários: de duetos e diários
Sala de exposições temporárias (piso 2) Cenários: de duetos e diários de Carlos Fadon Vicente, um dos fotógrafos mais marcantes do panorama artístico-fotográfico do Brasil e um dos pioneiros da arte telemática brasileira, é a primeira grande exposição do autor a ser apresentada na Europa. O conjunto da sua produção revela um microcosmo pessoal e uma capacidade singular para desenvolver uma linguagem própria de grande sensibilidade estética e excecional qualidade técnica. Entrelaçando distintas obras ao longo de sua trajetória, a exposição tem como principal temática a paisagem urbana metropolitana. O estatuto da representação visual constituiu o seu lastro concetual, sublinhando a questão da realidade da imagem fotográfica per se. A sua composição, na maior parte das vezes, reflete a apropriação e a transposição de ideários da colagem e da montagem. As diferentes formulações estéticas presentes oferecem ao público múltiplas leituras.
CARLOS FADON VICENTE - Scenes: on duets and diaries Temporary exhibition room (2nd floor) June 26, 2014 - October 26, 2014 Scenes: on duets and diaries by Carlos Fadon Vicente—one of the most prominent photographers in the Brazilian artistic and photographic scene, and one of the pioneers of Brazilian telematic art—is his first major exhibition in Europe. Vicente’s body of work reveals a personal microcosm and a unique ability to develop a distinctive language endowed with great aesthetic sensibility, and exceptional technical quality. Interlacing different works from different periods of his career, the exhibition’s main theme is focused on urban landscape. Emphasizing the question of the reality of the photographic image per se, the status of visual representation constitutes the exhibition’s conceptual core. In most cases, its composing elements mirror the appropriation and transposition of collage and montage models. Diverse aesthetical formulations offer the viewer the possibility for multiple readings.

KERSTIN ERGENZINGER Estudos para saudade
Sala Rostrum (piso 0) Estudos para saudade consiste numa instalação reativa criada especificamente para cada espaço expositivo. As esculturas estão ligadas a geofones (sensores) e a um sismógrafo, movendo-se em função quer dos impulsos microssísmicos do espaço, quer do movimento causado pelo visitante. As noções de saudade ou anseio são abordadas pela artista alemã em relação à visão nostálgica humana da natureza e da paisagem, simbolizadas, neste caso, pelas montanhas. As esculturas cinéticas podem ser vistas, assim, como simulações pseudocientíficas de uma paisagem, que, no seu conjunto, formam uma espécie de "máquina de saudade". Dados sísmicos, recolhidos em tempo real no próprio lugar onde estão instaladas as esculturas, representam a "realidade" do espaço; unidos à simulação associativa (a ficção) fazem com que a aparência da instalação se altere continuamente.
KERSTIN ERGENZINGER - Studies for Longing/Seeing Rostrum room (floor 0) July 17, 2014 - November 2, 2014 Studien zur Sehnsucht [Studies for Longing/Seeing] is a space-related, reactive installation. The sculptures are connected to a geophone and to a seismograph, and move in response both to the microseismic pulse of the exhibition-space, and the fine shifting and tilting of the floor caused by the visitors’ weight and movements. The German artist explores the concept of Sehnsucht in relation to the nostalgic idealization of nature and landscape, here symbolized by mountains. The kinetic sculptures can be seen as pseudo-scientific simulations of a landscape that, as a whole, work as a ‘longing-machine’. Real-time seismic data recorded at the sculptures’ location—representing the ‘reality’ of the space—fuses with associative simulation (fiction) to create continually changing appearance of the installations.

TÃO ALTO QUANTO OS OLHOS ALCANÇAM Exposição coletiva
Sala Rostrum (piso 0) e Salas de exposições temporárias (pisos 1 e 2) A exposição Tão alto quanto os olhos alcançam pretende efetuar uma leitura cruzada entre o património artístico da Arquidiocese de Évora, cujo inventário a Fundação realiza desde 2002, e a arte contemporânea. O repto da exposição parte de uma situação contemporânea dúplice: por um lado, a arte a partir do modernismo foi perdendo a noção de transcendência em favor de uma missão derrisória e enfeudada às questões da crítica e da avaliação das suas condições de possibilidade enquanto arte; por outro lado, existe na arte contemporânea uma clara nostalgia em relação a uma capacidade da arte se dirigir a zonas mais densas da nossa relação com o mundo. Nesse sentido, a exposição fará um percurso por artistas e obras, num contexto internacional e globalizado, que são testemunho da ponte entre imanência e transcendência que só o universo artístico pode corporalizar.
AS HIGH AS THE EYE CAN SEE - Group Exhibition Rostrum room (floor 0) and temporary exhibition rooms (1st and 2nd floor) November 14, 2014 - March 15, 2015 The exhibition As High as the Eye Can See aims to produce a cross-reading between the cultural heritage of the Archdiocese of Évora—whose inventory the Foundation has been conducting since 2002— and contemporary art. The challenge for this exhibition arises from a contemporary contingency: on the one hand, since modernism that art has been progressively oblivious to the notion of transcendence, favoring instead a derisory mission subordinated to the critique and evaluation of its own possibilities as art; on the other hand, within the context of contemporary art, we can find today a clear nostalgia for a capacity of art to address the densest areas defined by our relationship with the world. As such, the exhibition will produce a display of artists and artworks, in an international and globalized context, that bear witness of the bridge between immanence and transcendence, which only the artistic universe can embody.
