SUCCESS STORY Blindness Support Services, Inc. The family that was chosen this quarter..."has made leaps and bounds on the improvement and skill mastery of their daughter. These two parents were expecting twins, two beautiful babies in a very normal pregnancy. Due to birth complications, one of the two babies ended up having some cognitive delays and a visual impairment. That was a huge transition for this family. They had never experience(d) or knew a child with any kind of impairments or delays. Just to think how hard it is with twins for first time parents, now they have to look at life in a new light. These parents did not miss a beat! They jumped into looking for services and have now been part of our program for almost a year. Their beautiful little girl is growing and thriving. It is amazing to watch a child transform before your eyes and be able to be part of that transition. When we first met with the family, the young lady was not tracking, not holding visual attention for longer than 30 seconds, her gross motor skill was quite behind, as well as her fine motor skills. Her parents were struggling with managing two babies... ...Our Parents as Teachers. approach has truly focused on the 5 protective factors within this family. We have worked with mom on a month(ly) basis to help facilitate the learning experience of her children...Her daughter has gone from needing improvement in multiple areas to 100% mastery in 4 of the 9 developmental categories. We are confident that she will be moved up into the next Oregon age group by her following assessment. She stills needs improvement in her gross motor skills but she can stand fully supported...She is very excited and proud to be up. By the amount of excitement you can tell this child is driv(en) to catch up to her brother and start walking."
