GOAL 1 QUALITY EARLY LEARNING Funded Agencies United Way of the Desert
Raising a Reader 1,308 children received the Raising a Reader program at targeted school sites, on a monthly basis (98.6% accomplishment) UWD offered nightly video recorded bedtime stories through their Facebook pages to engage children in literacy activities through the COVID-19 school closures

DTI (Inland Empire Smiles) DTI provides oral health services where children are (i.e., school sites) regionally across San Bernardino and Riverside Counties Virtual Dental Home (VDH) Strategy (ages 0-19) 850 children received VDH services
Early Childhood Oral Health Assessment (ECOHA) Strategy (ages 0-5) 6,185 children received the ECOHA
VDH and ECOHA providers continued to serve children and families during the pandemic by phone, tele-health or text
UCR - Building New Capacity to Expand Healthcare 2 of the 4 enrolled scholarship recipients graduated and will start their residency programs.

SUCCESS STORIES Blindness Support Services - Home Visitation: One child, who was born prematurely, has been in the program for 2 years. He is counting, repeating words on demand, and following simple directions given. He started to exhibit violent behaviors after their familial situation caused them to move in with the in-laws. His parents were taught techniques and tips to curb these behaviors, and with 6 months of consistent implementation, he is no longer showing signs of aggression.
United Way of the Desert - Raising a Reader: Parents mentioned some of the benefits of this program are that it allows them to read books they do not have access to. It gives parents extra material to explore while reading that they might not have previously thought of. It helps them bond with their child, sparks an interest in reading, enhances reading skills, and even encourages their child to read stories in Spanish. Borrego Community Health Foundation - HealthySteps: During COVID-19, HSS has enabled a multitude of families to receive cash aid, food assistance, WIC, free diapers, and access to formula after one or both spouses have lost their jobs. One family was down to two days’ worth of food for a family of seven, but they were able to secure assistance through WIC, AAP Food Samaritan, and Martha’s Village.
