LETTER FROM OUR EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR Dear Families and Friends, First 5 Riverside was established in 1998 through a tax on tobacco to improve the lives of children, ages 0 through 5, and their families. In Riverside County, the mission and driving force of First 5 has remained clear: invest in opportunities to provide a strong foundation for our youngest citizens to be lifelong learners. Twenty years later, the impact of First 5 Riverside is broad and deep. Our Impact Report highlights the mark First 5 Riverside has made in our communities. Since 1998, we have touched the lives of over two million children, parents, and providers. Our investments in quality early learning and care, comprehensive health and development, and resilient families remain at the core of our work. Riverside County is stronger today because of the great strides we have made together to create an early care system for children and families. We are grateful for the contributions of our community partners, the leadership of the County of Riverside Board of Supervisors, and the Riverside County Children & Families Commission; and most of all the parents and children we have been honored to serve. You have all played a significant role in our success. As we celebrate our past, we also need to recharge as we look to the next 20 years! Our work is not done. First 5 Riverside will continue to be the catalyst to strengthen systems and build new ones where they do not exist. We will continue to discover and invest in promising models that build on the strong foundation we have created. Quality Start Riverside County (QSRC) provides coaching and training to early childhood education providers. Coaches help providers strengthen educational practice and create environments where children can grow and thrive.
As of 2017-2018, 20% of all licensed child care centers and family child care homes in Riverside County were a part of QSRC.

QSRC is made possible by a collaboration among First 5 Riverside, the Riverside County Office of Education, and the Consortium for Early Learning Services. 5
COMPREHENSIVE HEALTH AND DEVELOPMENT Children, prenatal through age 5, and their families experience the full range of health and behavioral health services needed to support their physical and socio-emotional development. First 5 Riverside invests in strategies to improve access to health care. Our investments have ensured that 40,000 children accessed health insurance, over 145,000 mothers received breastfeeding support, and 115,000 children received oral health screenings and needed treatment.
The Inland Empire has the FEWEST PRIMARY CARE PHYSICIANS of any region in California.1 First 5 Riverside has founded a one of a kind pediatric fellowship in partnership with the University of California, Riverside to increase the number of new physicians who return to practice in the Inland Empire following completion of their residencies.

RESILIENT FAMILIES Families and communities are engaged, supported, and strengthened through culturally effective resources and opportunities that assist them in nurturing, caring, and providing for their children’s success and well-being. First 5 Riverside is investing $7 million in home visitation programs to strengthen families and break the cycle of poverty. Home visitation programs increase parenting skills and connect families to services they need.
As a result, children are healthier, better prepared for kindergarten, and less likely to experience abuse or neglect.
