PAVILION OF ASSEMBLY SKILLS: Fabrication, AutoCAD, Hand-drawing
The pavilion is a place of gathering, multitude and movement. As such, it is designed as an assembly of parts. Meant as a temporary and versatile shelter, a modular system was devised that allows the pavilion to be easily assembled out of prefabricated pieces and be expandable, flexible to its use. The model was fabricated following the designed manufacturing process as closely as possible. Aluminum plates were folded up to resist gravity load and compressed at the corners in between two disks resting on mushroom columns. The Pavilion of Assembly stands in contrast to the Pavilion of Solitude, on the site of an art center, together completing the conceptual and formal scheme of the building. (site plan on page 4) 0

PULLEN ART CENTER SKILLS: Sketchup, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Model-making
The art center is where ambiguous and savage energy is fighting to find clarity and emerge as rational art forms. On the exterior, the form appears as an amalgamation of eccentric volumes that pull in different directions and eventually break out as pure forms: the circle of the Pavilion of Solitude and the square of the Pavilion of Assembly. Inside, is a diverse experience of spatial events. Repeating elements that appear in different circumstances connect over one’s memory of space; The two stairways are one in form, yet different in scale. The upstairs balcony reoccurs as a hallway in the basement, and the circle peeks at one continually
as a skylight, an overlook into the basement and a tree in the courtyard. The program contains 4 studios of painting and printmaking above, photography and video below and a gallery in between. Each space is infused with its own unique experience in the way of natural lighting, making the art center sensually saturated. Outside, the building is clad in board-form concrete to enhance the tactile and visual experience while the material’s directionality is exploited to emphasize inward and upward movements around the building.

SULLIVAN RESIDENCE, UNION SQUARE, NYC SKILLS: Interior Design, Project Management, Vectorworks PROFESSIONAL PROJECT WITH BOFFI
This Boffi | De Padova kitchen at Sullivan Residence sets a rich fluted Canaletto walnut island against the simplicity of white lacquered tall units. While the island as the protagonist of the space houses the main kitchen functions, an additional counter space and small sink are hidden conveniently inside a tall unit with pocket doors. The interior of cabinets are designed in a dark gray oak and a metallic gray lacquer. Beautifully crafted black Lapitec counter-tops with integrated sinks bind the two elements together. A black Decomat modular shelving system creates a light screen between the kitchen space and the passage.

DESANTIS RESIDENCE, FINANCIAL DISTRICT, NYC SKILLS: Interior Design, Project Management, Vectorworks PROFESSIONAL PROJECT WITH BOFFI
The interior of this 1-bedroom apartment was realized with Boffi|Depadova. Through the design process I worked closely with the client to find unique solutions for a minimalistic vision. The kitchen was designed with pocket doors on the wall side and a sliding Corian top on the island, so that it could completely close. The bathroom is clad entirely in white Carrara marble tiles with a marble vanity that contributes to the white clean palette but adds a touch of luxury. Closets were integrated into niches for a completely seamless look and to conclude furniture pieces were added in customized finishes that complement and balance the material palette of the apartment. This project was entirely designed and managed by myself.

ROOM WITH LIGHT SKILLS: Model-making, Hand-drawing
The room is self-transforming, presenting two different spaces in the morning and in the afternoon. The project adopts a unique treatment of each of the eastern and western walls, to not only create different spatial qualities but also load the room with different meanings. In the morning, light shines through the eastern fritted glass with a triangulated pattern that creates a dynamic play of light inside the room. This translates the meaning of morning as a beginning and an active look towards the future.
Morning Light: Dynamic; Beginnings; Looking towards the Future
15
FATE MALEK
In the afternoon, light travels through the slots in the thick western wall to create a series of parallel static lines in the room. This is an interpretation of afternoon as an ending, a calm repose and a reflection on the past. Room with Light is a small yet inclusive manifest of light as an architectural element that can manipulate form, represent conceptual meanings and dynamically interact with the occupants of the space.

PRECEDENT STUDY: OUTPOST BY OLSON KUNDIG SKILLS: Hand-drawing, Diagramming
Outpost sits with minimal disturbance against its harsh surroundings, reminiscent of a Monk by the Sea; a bold expression of insignificance against the Sublime. With 3/4 of the building footprint given to a walled outdoor garden, entrance to the house is stretched across a long threshold, delaying the break from outside.
So strong is the conceptual dominance of nature, that the house itself, turns into an apparatus for viewing the landscape. The elevated living floor _ the piano nobile _ opens out into the vast desert landscape through Corbusian ribbon windows and the northern cross window expands the view out telescopically as it aligns with the long garden, creating the reverse effect of the compressive journey inside.
Designed on a golden rectangle module in both plan and section the structure follows the mathematical ratio of nature, inserting its strictly rational presence in opposition to the organic expanse around it. The house is an object. It does not presume to blend, rather it stands out as a sole observer, in awe of its context.

The Commons is a university campus residential complex. It contains housing units, classrooms, computer labs, a community workshop and dining spaces. The driving concepts were first, to correct the current campus circulation by continuing the main path, thus reconnecting the western and eastern parts of the campus and second, to offer an independent living style to students while maintaining their connection to the campus community. To achieve these objectives, the building is divided into two wings, opening a pedestrian flow through the site. This also maximizes access to northern and southern daylight. While the more publicly accessed spaces are arranged on the first floor, a series of apartment-style units, with separate entrances, are stacked above, provided with an elevated outdoor deck, more exclusive to the living community. All rooms receive daylight and every apartment above second floor has access to a balcony in addition to 4 roof terraces along the complex.
Section Model
The facade aims to accentuate the individual presence of each room and is clad in composite aluminum panels for a modern coherence with the traditional terracotta and brick of campus.

DESIGN COLLEGE AND LIBRARY EXTENSION SKILLS: Sketchup, Photoshop, AutoCAD, Architectural Precast Concrete
This new addition to NCSU College of Design was to house studio and exhibition spaces and a new design library. The program is divided in two masses. A monolithic cube holding up the street face contains studio spaces and gives a nod to the modernist origins of the school. The cube is clad in precast concrete panels that are formed through different groupings of smaller repetitive cassettes, creating the illusion of a continuous surface. The cube opens up on the southern and western faces and connects to the library mass that unravels behind
it in the form of a folded plane. The folded roof of the library is designed in reversed gable precast panels that vary in width by inserting movable dams in the molds. An exterior deck ties back the volume of the cube to the existing college buildings and a monumental ramp connects the upper level of the old courtyard to the lower extension courtyard where an outdoor exhibition space, walkways and a reflecting pool are incorporated.

The project brief was to design an ADU over a one-car garage. It is located on the northwestern edge of the property to respect the existing mature trees and allow ample daylight to penetrate the living space. A porous ribbon driveway provides access to the garage which is fitted with additional utilities, to act as a convertible workshop space. Above, a thick kitchen wall divides the unit into the more private bedroom and bathroom side and a sun-lit living and dining space with access to a balcony. A stairway behind the kitchen leads to a storage/study loft above the bedroom. The unit, with a prominent uniform profile, is in modernized accordance with the form and material of the neighboring context.

BACK COVER: From “Our Home” Poems by Fate Malek (2016)
Through the wilderness she had walked like a somnambulist. She had come to understand the life of a place to be as short as moments. The age-old question was on her mind, “If a tree falls down in a deserted forest, will there be a sound?” And she was always of the belief that existence is tied to perception and perception is tied to presence and presence to time. Her home, she thought, was a time that passed.
