Letter from the Editor Microblogging platform Tumblr is an endless source of inspiration. As someone who spends more time on the site than she cares to admit, I can state its inspiring qualities from experience. From photography and art, to fashion and beauty, even films to see and books to read - anything and everything you desire inspiration for can be found on Tumblr. However, my absolute favorite muse is in the form of a very specific type of post amongst the grapevine of monotonous scrolling. You see, the most encouraging part of Tumblr is when you stumble upon the posts that tell you that you are beautiful just as you are… that humans come in all shapes, colors, sizes, and more… that nothing about you, your experiences, your interests, or way of life makes you any less worthy of love in this world… and that you can “wear whatever the f&^# you want” no matter the build of your body. How do you get a bikini body? By putting a bikini on your body, of course! It’s really that simple. No special workout necessary.

B

e daring, be different, be impractical, be anything that will assert integrity of purpose and imaginative vision against the play-it-safers, the creatures of the commonplace, the slaves of the ordinary.” Cecil Beaton Photographer and fashion designer

It is with this mentality that I approached the spring and summer issue of Fashion, Art, and Beauty Magazine. Our belief as a magazine has always been that if you are yourself, you will always be in fashion. It is about time we actually portrayed that with our content. Yes, the current trends and high-fashion concepts for the season are always a nice reference for new wardrobe ideas, and a photo spread featuring our very own stylists demonstrates this idea. But these items are, by no means, items that we insist that everyone purchase. Instead, we (or at least I) encourage our readers to battle against society and its norms by developing your own person style (“Developing Your Own Style,” page 7) and staying true to who you are to your very core.

I don’t believe in living your life constantly trying to please or impress others. Everything you do is for you and only you, including the choices you make with your looks. Like me, for example, I’m a plus-sized girl with red dyed hair and facial piercings, I wear bright clothing AND bold makeup, and to top it all off, I accessorize with statement jewelry like an octopus-shaped necklace. And you know what? I rock it like I was born to wear it all! The key is that I am not bothered by what others think of me; it’s all in your attitude.

That, my friends, is the moral of this issue of FAB Magazine. If you take nothing else away with you once reaching the end of the publication, I hope the message here inspires you to remain the kick-ass individual you are and to not lose sight of your beautifully unique personal identity. It’s all you’ve got. Hold on to it for dear life.

Nine Must- haves for 2013 By Taylor Marker

S

ome pieces of clothing that should be left in 2012; feathers, jeggings, cropped T-shirts, and glasses without lenses according to the GMA News article “New year, new clothes: Updating your wardrobe for 2013.” Everyone looks for the next best thing, but the new trend of the year may still be in your closet.

STATEMENT ACCESSORIES.

Bring out those glamorous jewelry pieces. Statement accessories include anything from an edgy headband embellished with gems to a glittery purse or printed earrings. Big, sparkly necklaces or earrings worn with neutral colored clothing is one of the latest trends. Statement accessories are an easy way to dress up any outfit – the more unique and noticeable, the better. It’s fun to show society your personality through accessories.

SOLID COLORED PIECES.

You can never go wrong with a solid-colored t-shirt or a little black dress. Solid pieces provide more matching options than those with many colors or prints. With plain colors, it is possible to incorporate bold statement pieces of clothing into your outfit. During the day, mix a simple white t-shirt with jeans and vibrant colored pumps. At night add a little edge to your little black dress with bright make-up and statement accessories. Wearing solid-colors opens the door for accent pieces to get the real attention.

PRINTS.

Vintage printed clothing has made a come-back in recent months. Animal print pieces have also become popular with the more adventurous fashionistas in 2013. Adding bold, printed earrings or some tie-dyed printed bracelets to an otherwise plain outfit will help bring out your spunk. However, it is important to remember to not put too many loud prints into one outfit. Feel free to mix one or two prints, but pair them with neutrals to really make the prints stand out.

FASHION

LACE, SHEER AND RUFFLES.

Textured fabrics and ruffled embellishments are a great way to add a girly vibe to any outfit. Lace tank tops, sheer overlayers or ruffled summer dresses are great pieces to wear for a date or a girl’s day with your best friends. It is important, however, to remember to use these pieces in moderation; be careful how you pair up your lace and sheer pieces. These styles together can get rather showy. Try a cropped tank top underneath a sheer button-up blouse or a lace shirt peeking out of a jean jacket. Even adding a chic necklace that incorporates lace can do wonders for dressing up an outfit.

DENIM.

Jeans have been in the fashion stream for decades, but the denim trend doesn’t stop at jeans. Denim dresses and jean jackets are coming back as well. The great thing about denim is that it can be paired with practically everything! Another advantage of denim is that doesn’t get dirty as quickly as other fabrics. Feel free to wear denim a few times before washing it. Wearing a creative denim bracelet will definitely pull together the whole outfit. Even carrying a denim purse will add a casual and cute vibe to your outfit.

BOMBER JACKETS.

Whether in leather, denim, or even studded from shoulder to cuff, complete any outfit by throwing on one of these. Bomber jackets bring an edgy fashion statement to any outfit. Bomber jackets are more common in darker shades but can also now be found them in many different colors and shades.

Pair these jackets with a cute summer dress or capris.

WAIST BELTS.

You can take any type of belt and work it at your waist; chains, thin, bulky, etc. Waist belts work with any body type. Anytime an outfit is in need of shaping, these are sure to do the trick. Try a brighter shade to make a statement. When wearing a flowy, loose- fitting dress add a belt at the waist to give it some style and shape. You can also pair a waist belt with a sweater or just a tank top.

EMBELLISHED SWEATERS.

This year it is all about the details. This style takes sweaters to a whole new level. They are cozy but chic. Embellished sweaters are casual, and can be paired up with anything. Wear an embellished sweater with your favorite pair of skinny jeans, or with a soft, flowy skirt. Make them fit into any style by accessorizing to your look.

FAUX LEATHER.

The right leather piece can take your look to the next level – whether it’s a pair of pants or just a clutch. Leather gives any style a soft but tough look. Make an outfit more edgy and bold with a leather jacket and a pair of jeans, or soften it up with a lacy summer dress and faux leather flats. Leather can be showcased in any sort of style.

Fashion that looks good in your checkbook By ANNA LOEW

F

or college students, life gets busy and expensive at times. Between studying, a part-time job or two and keeping up with our social lives, it’s hard to maintain a personal wardrobe and save the money for it. With rent to pay, tuition to save for or a gas tank to fill up, money can be tight, but that doesn’t mean you have to forfeit your sense of style!

What’s one of the easiest ways to affordably improve, switch up, and modify your wardrobe? Accessorize! There are more creative ways to accessorize than most people realize, like paying a trip to Joann or Hancock Fabrics. You can get a lengthy swatch of any fabric that catches your eye in either store for a small price, and there you have it: your own inexpensive, flirty and one-of-a-kind headband or scarf. Don’t forget that these fabric stores also sell embellishments to pin or sew onto a garment or bag to spice the wardrobe up a little. You know you’re a bargain hunter when the first place you head to in stores are the clearance racks. Where to find the best deals varies, but there are a few stores you’ll want to remember for fabulous deals. Wet Seal often has a clearance sale of buy one (at full price), get one for a penny. One store in particular has store-wide sales – Fashion Bug. The company’s stores are going out of business, so they have everything-must-go sales. Why not stop by and get an eight dollar pair of flats to remember Fashion Bug before you have to say goodbye to them permanently? Other stores with fabulous deals include Kohl’s, Forever 21, Payless Shoes and Charlotte Russe. If you’re looking for something more local and don’t want to take a trip to the Twin Cities in Minnesota, or Eau Claire,

Wisconsin, you still have options right here in Menomonie. Just take a stroll downtown and pay a visit to Liessa’s Hair Studio & Day Spa or Cherry Pickers. Liessa’s has fashionable, flashy shoes that run around $20 to $30. Their apparel, jewelry and bags can run a little more expensive, but they certainly aren’t over-the-top. Cherry Pickers takes donations of gently used apparel of selected brands and has a decent inventory including dresses from Forever 21 and Old Navy apparel. They also have coats, lots of scarves, shoes, jewelry, and leggings available in a variety of colors. There is Goodwill on the other side of town that offers 50% off a different chosen colored tag each week. It is common that their tops and pants run under $10. Keep in mind that these clothes are preshrunk, but do check for holes, stains or construction abnormalities before buying. Goodwill has a variety of brands and clothing quality like Banana Republic, Maurices, The Limited and American Eagle.

G-stagelove is a little more expensive, but has a nice inventory of jewelry and includes plus sizes. Their bags can run up into the $40 range, though. Returns are available up to 21 days.

DWD Shoes (Discount Women’s Dress Shoes) sells a wide variety of shoes and allows you to search based on your size. They also sell apparel, with dresses ranging from $15-$35 depending on how formal you want to go. They also have an eye-catching variety of printed jeans each under $20. So who said it’s expensive to look fashionable? As college students, extra spending money for clothes (or even time to shop for clothes) can be difficult to obtain. Finding apparel that fits your budget is not impossible, and wearing affordable fashion makes a big statement.

Online shopping offers an enormous selection, and if you don’t typically buy from online sources, there’s always a first time. Sammydress is nice if you’re looking for dresses under $12 or shoes and bags under $20. The site includes garment photos, product details such as the material and available colors, product rating and review and a price chart that includes shipping. Sammydress is a sub-company of Yigou International Group out of China. Moddeals offers casual t-shirt looks, sheer and lace garments, activewear and loungewear. Bags, clutches and wallets are all under $20. The site has 365-day returns and $5 shipping and gives ratings, sizes, clothing fibers and care instructions. They are based out of San Diego, California.

Fashion that fits

By LAUREN LANGENHAHN

Y

ou look in your closet for the fifth time this morning trying to find an outfit but nothing seems to fit right even though it is your size. This problem is no stranger to most girls. Luckily, it is a simple problem to fix. Not every piece of clothing is going to look good on you. In fact, most of us don’t know what would look best on us. This is your ultimate guide to what is in style and what will look great on your body.

If you have smaller shoulders and big hips, you need to put the emphasis on your waist and arms. You want to stay away from showing off your hips; it will make you look wider then you really are. Avoid cargo pants and printed skirts, as they will also be deceiving to your figure. Instead try an “A-line” skirt because they camouflage your hips, making you look slimmer overall. Strapless will look good on you because it will show off your small arms. Ruffles on shirts are also a great way to show off your upper body. As for a jacket, look for one that hits right above the waist to emphasize the top portion of your body.

If you have a broad chest and a narrow waist, you need to show off your legs and the rest of your lower body. You must soften your shoulders and upper body. Some ways that you can do this is by wearing bright colors on the bottom half to emphasize attention there. Full skirts will make your legs look amazing. Spaghetti strap top dresses will have the opposite effect. You have the perfect body to experiment with high waisted styles! One of the things to keep in mind is not to wear overwhelming patterns and styles.

FAB Magazine // 006

People that carry most of their weight on the top portion of their body should show off their legs. The goal that you have when you get dressed in the morning is to elongate you torso, show off your legs and create the illusion of a waist. You can do this by simply wearing a bra that gives you extra support; it will make your torso look even longer then it is. Another secret is to conceal your stomach by wearing empire tops and dresses. Boot cut jeans look amazing on you because they are flared to create an even line from your shoulders down.

When you have hips and shoulders that are equal size and a small waist, the major thing to keep in mind is to show off your curves without going overboard. Don’t hide your curves with baggy clothes. You would look great in skinny or straight leg jeans. Remember to emphasize your small waist by cinching it with a belt. This will also show off your curves. If you are going out for the night, try wearing a fitted dress. These are one of the best ways to show off your hour glass figure. Not every piece of clothing is going to look good on you. You just need to figure out what body type you are and what fits you best. When you go to a store try things on, that is your safest bet. Happy shopping!

Developing your own style By LAUREN LANGENHAHN

W

ho are you? Are you artistic, business-oriented, a wild child or environmentalist? More than likely, you do not fit exactly into one of these groups. Everyone is unique and developing your personal style is one way to show off to people who you are as a person. When you start off looking for your personal style you should look at your interests. For example, if you feel passionate about the environment, you can find clothes that are environmently-friendly. You should express who you are and what you love to do through your clothing. Have fun with it! This does not mean that If you like flowers you need find a shirt that has flowers on it. It just means that it could be the inspiration for your next shopping trip (and florals are really in style). When you get to the store take risks. You never know, you could be the next great trend setter. If you see a shirt that you like, try it on no matter if its in the latest magazine or not. Remember: this is your personal style not Cosmo’s or Seventeen’s. It is your time to shine and show the world who you are and what you are all about. One way that some people find their personal style is by finding inspiration in a celebrity or another person that you think resembles what you love and adore. It is possible that you and your idlol could have a lot of the same interests and believe in the same things. When you go shopping, you can think of that person and what they wear to use it as a guidance tool.

So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and discover who you are in the world of fashion! Just remember to be who you are without being afraid to take risks. If you have a person that you look up to, take a look at their style and incorporate bits and pieces of what they wear into your wardrobe. It is all about experimenting and finding what you like. Get out there!

from suit coat to peplum jacket: Business and professional fashion

ashion is made to unfashionable,” Coco admitted once long ago.

become Chanel

Her insight makes sense. Fashion changes with the day, month, season, year, and decade, making way for new styles, trends and creativity to flow through each new designer, stylist and street style savvy fashionista.

With this age, the world has adopted more modern fashion into even the most professional settings. Careerwear no longer consists of your average tailored, flat black suit, neutral, chambray button up and close-toed heels. Style has engulfed even the business world… throughout the world. According to Frances Cha of CNN Travel, Asia is throwing out the “stiff, generic work outfits” and implementing fashion into their career-wear.

But why? What has changed so dramatically in the business world to encompass such a change? What is the reason for exempting tradition? Asia, a part of the world that is growing economically and very business-oriented, says they want to move forward and combine a professional workday outfit with one that can easily transform to be suitable for a post-work cocktail date on the town.

FASHION

“Both women and men are striving to become more eclectic and sophisticated in business settings,” quoted the Shanghai-based June-Mee Hong, a fashion buyer for a Neiman Marcus department stores in China.

She explained, “Dresses with jackets and heels, chic and clean silk blouses with high waisted pants or shorts, and minis with cozy knitwear and boots, can all be translated from night to day.” But Asia is not the only country that’s taking heed to these business-wear trends—the United States has their own ideas. Women in the office are clothing themselves with trends hot off the runway. While norms say these trends must remain tasteful, they are still being executed all the more.

Amy Lee, director of Career Services at the University of Wisconsin–Stout, directs interns and graduates who are entering into the workforce how to dress appropriately.

“When interviewing, it is important to have clothes that are classic and not too trendy,” Lee explained. “Accessories and color can add some personality and style to your interview attire. However, accessories need to remain professional and conservative for the interview.”

Lee also states that your closet for everyday work wear may look a little different. “You want to have your own style at work, however, you also want to demonstrate a fit with the company as well,” she explains. What are some of these trends that “work” for work?

Peplum jackets and blouses are conservative and are often appropriate for career settings. Asymmetrical blouses, skirts and dresses may also fly for the work environment and have been an ongoing trend since last spring. High-waisted slacks and cropped pants are also an easy trend to pull off in the work place.

“it is always best to wear conservative, professional attire,” Lee redefined. Feel free to play up your work wear with your own personal style, but remember that “interview attire definitely impacts the hiring process for most organizations,” as Amy Lee states, so keep it simple for the face-toface interaction.

Although this trend may be more appropriate in some work places more than others, floral and colored suit jackets may be a way to add fashion to your professional wear. To keep it on the safe side, try plum, emerald or another rich color. As Lee stated, colors that are on trend can also be incorporated into your wardrobe. (Hint: For spring 2013 look to add Nectarine, Poppy Red, Grayed Jade, Lemon Zest and Pantone’s Color of the Year—Emerald to your closet. You can find these colors on pantone.com) To keep your position in the work field

CAN WE GO THRIFT SHOPPING? By grace arneberg guest contributor

W

e’ve all heard the song “Thrift Shop” by Macklemore. (And if you haven’t, well, you’ve probably been living under a rock). While many are warming up to the trend, others insist that they’ve loved it all along.

I admit it— I was one of those “before it was cool” thrifters. In fact, I was a “that’s the least cool thing you could do” thrifter. I remember a Hollisterclad friend in middle school telling me that she would never be caught dead browsing a thrift store’s endless supply of hand-me-downs, while I proudly wore my $3 shirts and sweaters. But lately, that same friend has joined the plethora of people thrifting to find good deals and a unique style. As a poor college student, I know how kind thrifting can be to a bank account when you’re in need of some new clothes. Whether you’re a thrifting expert or you’re just warming up to the idea, here are three tips to further your style:

KEEP AN OPEN MIND.

No matter what style you are looking for, keep in mind that when thrifting, it’s really a hit or miss situation. You may find yourself pleasantly surprised by something entirely different or some hilarious, shoulder-padded 90s alternatives. Don’t be afraid to get creative, either. Let’s say you like the fabric and pattern on that long skirt, but you think it would look better as a strapless sundress. Who says that problem can’t be fixed with some elastic around the waist and a sewing machine? Outdated pants can be turned into personalized shorts or capris. Unflattering t-shirts can be made into tank tops. Even if you aren’t seeing anything you like, it can still be easy to find potential.

DIVE IN!

You never know what you’ll find until you start looking. Not sure where to start? Begin in the women’s section or other sections you might automatically navigate to. Don’t judge an aisle by what you first see; you never know what bargains you might find if your

FAB Magazine // 012

searching is thorough. You can also browse the various accessories, such as scarves and purses (some thrift stores have brand new products). Remember that while a lot of it may not be currently trending or in the best condition, you can always find a “diamond in the rough.” If you find a shirt that you aren’t entirely in love with, dress it up with a scarf or another accessory. At a thrift store, that’s usually a “two for the price of one (or three… or four)” deal! Don’t forget to check out the men’s sections as well— I mean, who doesn’t love to accompany their leggings with a big, comfy sweater?

DON’T BE AFRAID TO TAKE SOME RISKS.

It’s your chance to be unique! Chances are, you won’t find your peers wearing the same outfit that you conjured up at the local thrift shop. Besides, with the incredibly cheap prices, you won’t have to worry about wasting money on something you’ll never wear—why not try something new? However, as a reminder, money is money and it can still add up, so if you’re not sure about it at the store, leave it on the rack. You’ll be even less sure about it once you get home. Don’t buy something ridiculous just because you can— make sure it is something that you like and feel comfortable in.

In the end, remember not to give up on thrift shops— their merchandise is always changing. (In fact, ask your local thrift shop which days of the week the store gets new donations in). Within a few months, your favorite thrift shop may have an entirely different selection than it did the last time you visited, which means you get to repeat the process again!

HERE’S WHAT DRESSING UP CAN DO FOR YOU:

Get your confidence higher than ever! Dressing up and feeling good is one of the best ways to do this. If you feel confident in yourself, everyone else will too. Stand out from the norm. The best way to be noticed in a crowd is by looking professional and put together. Express yourself through your wardrobe – don’t be afraid to say what you want and get creative.

Meet new people. Countless conversations have started with “I like your shoes!” Fashion is a great way to make friends and learn new things.

Reasons to dress up everyday by megan johnson

L

ets face it, we all have at least one outfit that we think is “too fancy” to wear on an ordinary day. Don’t keep putting those outfits off. Wear them! You bought them for a reason; you deserve to look good. When lazy days come along and you don’t want to try too hard to get ready, but dressing up could be the key to making your day better!

No matter what your reason is, dressing up can never be bad. Don’t worry about what everyone else things; dress for yourself. Dress how you want and be as fabulous as you can. Nothing looks better on you than confidence; so dress up, look good and be yourself.

Cost per wear – don’t save those $200 jeans for special occasions only. There are most certainly worth showing off. Spending more money on a few items that you can wear with everything is a great way to switch things up. Accessories can also pull any outfit together.

It’s fun! You can mix and match an outfit to make it what you want. The possibilities are endless when it comes to combinations in your closet. Switch it up next time and try something new. Take advantage of being young while you can; this is your time to shine/ Push the limits before your new career comes along.

You never know who you’re going to run into at the grocery store. Whether it’s your future boss or just an old friend, dress to impress. Nothing is worse than being caught in sweatpants and an old t-shirt when you want to make a good first impression. Become a trendsetter. Who wouldn’t want to be responsible for the hottest new trend? Take a chance and wear something a little different, who knows, it just might catch on! Fashion brings art alive. What do you want people to see? Create something you are not afraid to show of and wear it proud.

Nothing beats liking what you see in the mirror. This is the ultimate confidence builder. Treat yourself every now and then with something you like to see!

arm candy By Laura bauman

T

here’s nothing like bright colors, warm weather and new fashion to get us excited for summer! This year, the best way to celebrate the changing season is with arm candy. It doesn’t matter if it’s store-bought or handmade; the more jewelry you have, the better. No matter what your style is, you can accent with the best bracelets for any occasion. Bracelets are the best new trend to experiment with. You can find these styles at your favorite accessories store and most stores will sell all styles as well. Accessories are important to any outfit and bracelets are the best way to stand out without spending a lot of money. Just remember to always have fun when styling yourself!

BOHO

DARING

CLASSIC

The boho look is by far the easiest and most fun look to pull off. It’s a great mix of daring and subtle. Mix and match any color, print, style or material without being worried about going over the top. Many boho style bracelets come in materials such as metal, thread or bead to master the look. Try making your own bracelets with multiple colored threads – so east and SO cheap. These accessories can be worn with your favorite festival outfit or jeans and a cute top for a more casual look.

Having a daring personality is also a fun way to express fashion and accessories, but these pieces should be used primarily as accents. For example, a simple outfit can be made exciting by pairing it with daring accessories. The best way to go bold is with colors, fabrics and patterns. This, like boho, can mix colors, fabrics and patterns to create a successful look. Daring bracelets are extremely fun to work with but they have to be done right in order for them to not look over the top. If you choose to wear an “out there” bracelet, keep your outfit simple or make sure you know how to style something a little crazier.

The classic look is best for special occasions or for girls with a more refined sense of style. These accessories are usually free of patterns and crazy material but still have a funky standout accent. This look is great for a dressy night out of at work for a professional look. A lot of these bracelets come in solid colors, are metal or plastic, and have rhinestones or jewels to make it look very simple but pretty. These bracelets also tend to be slightly more versatile than daring or boho bracelets because they are simpler.

LONG LIVE FASHION: H&M IN-STORE RECYCLING

educe, reuse and recycle is something most people wouldn’t pair with a clothing store, but H&M has taken on a new recycling project that hits on each of the three R’s. Karl-Johan Persson, the CEO of H&M, stated, “Making the most of the resources we use and avoiding waste is central to our business idea.” The iconic fashion company has started a revolutionizing program to reduce the amount of textiles that end up in landfills. According to the Environmental Protection Agency, 95 percent of the textiles that end up in landfills could have been recycled. The new program that H&M has adopted will help to reduce that percentage tremendously. The program is called the “Long Live Fashion Project” and works like this: customers are allowed to bring in two bags (at a time) of any quality or quantity of used clothing. An employee behind the checkout counter will seal the bags and put them into the recycling box. For each bag you bring, you will receive a 15 percent off coupon for a single item of your choice at H&M. After the box is full, H&M will send the clothing to headquarters in Stockholm, Sweden, where the clothing will be sorted into four different piles according to condition.

FAB Magazine // 022

REWEAR: If the used clothing is in good condition, the garments will be marketed worldwide as second-hand goods. REUSE: For garments that can no longer be worn, H&M will be converting them to make new products such as washcloths, socks and other small textile products. RECYCLE: Textiles that can’t be reused will be converted into textiles fibers to produce damping and insulation materials for the auto industry. ENERGY: For clothing that cannot be reworn, reused or recycled, there is the option to break them down and use them for energy.

In the future, H&M plans to produce new garments by breaking down the used garments into a low form and remaking the textiles from scratch. This program is the first global recycling program put on by a fashion-clothing store. What’s not to love about it? It reduces waste and increases the amount of money that will stay in your wallet.

L

ooking back at myself five years ago, I would have never thought I’d go across the world to a foreign country where they don’t speak English by myself, or that I would be overseeing 300 people, telling them what to do and being really confident doing it,” said the 24-year-old Apparel Design and Development student. Alicia Hinz beams with energy. The University of Wisconsin–Stout student has built quite the resume during her five years at UW-Stout. “My freshman year I started out apprenticing [for the Silhouette’s Fashion Show],” Hinz said. “I then coordinated the show my sophomore year.” Her role as a leader got Hinz recognition—fast.

“Based on that, I was asked to become a teaching assistant for the Apparel Department which led to working on six different courses total,” Hinz said. “Some of them have been senior-level capstone courses. It’s pretty cool to be a sophomore and work with students that have been in all these classes before me.” Due to her experience in her earlier years, Hinz was asked to return to the UW–Stout Silhouettes Fashion Show Executive Board as Fashion Show Director, in addition to completing her four-piece senior collection for the show. The new position requires Hinz’s prior experience in the show to help oversee all aspects of show development and production.

FAB Magazine // 030

Several applications later, Hinz utilized her experience to land an internship for the summer of 2012 as both a designer and technical designer in Manhattan, N.Y. with Susana Monaco. She was offered a job after her internship, but declined. “I’ve tried New York; I want to try somewhere else,” Hinz explained. “Life is short. Pick another place to jump!”

Hinz’s adventure continued. Her biggest journey led her further than the East Coast; it led her across the world to Bangkok, Thailand for her spring 2012 semester. She took courses in Thai cuisine, Thai media and Thai aesthetics—where she developed the most inspiration.

Hinz offers underclassmen some guidance with the experience she acquired over the past five years.

“Just keep pushing because no one else is going to do it for you,” Hinz advised. “The only way to do something you’re going to be proud of is to take it into your own hands. There’s a difference between doing a project to fulfill the requirements and putting your whole heart into that project to really make it your own.”

“Their ideals of beauty are so different from what we have over here,” Hinz said. “That is something that I brought back and I am trying to apply here.” She used this inspiration from her visits to New York, India, Nepal, Japan and Thailand in her four-piece collection for Senior Design Studio.

“The line that I’m creating is very personal for me, because it’s a reflection of my travels and who I’ve become in the past couple years,” Hinz explained. “I’m trying to pull all that inspiration, warp it in my mind, with the things that I’ve learned and the style that I’m known for, and spew it out into something that is very me.” Her final senior collection debuted on the runway for the Silhouette’s Fashion Show on April 18 and 20.

average four hours of sleep per night,” said Ashley Hohnstein, a student at the University of Wisconsin–Stout. “It’s normal to me and a lot of [graphic design students] I know.” The 21-year-old is a senior in the Graphic Design and Interactive Media major , completing her final semester at UW–Stout.

Her dedication over the years has finally landed her a spot in senior studio. She has fallen in love with her major with one reason being predominant—its flexibility. “It’s a pretty open major, so I can twist my projects to fit into whatever mold I want them to,” Hohnstein explained. “I have a lot of ability to push things in the direction I want them to go.” With this advantage at her fingertips, Hohnstein has played her cards with the best of her abilities—dealing a successful deck.

She said, “I have been in the Best of Design show twice—one time winning the ‘Best of Multimedia’ for a stop motion video during my sophomore year. Other than that, I was AIGA [American Institute of Graphic Arts] president last year and vice president the year before.” But what has gotten her to the top so quickly?

“I think I am a bit more confident in taking risks for the sake of my work than some of my peers,” Hohnstein admitted. “The fact that I’ve pushed

FAB Magazine // 032

myself more and done side projects has helped me gain a lot more footing and relationships in the professional world.”

As Hohnstein nears her career as a professional in the business world, she admitted there is something employers must know about her.

“I am very hard-working and have a very broad range of talent that I’m able to make work with most projects,” she said. “I’m also very strong conceptually.” So, where will we be seeing Miss Hohnstein in the future?

“I have been applying for jobs in Minneapolis mostly, and then on both of the coasts,” Hohnstein explained. “I’m looking for a job having to do with either branding or packaging and eventually I want to move into a full freelance career and go back to school for my masters, so I can teach at a college level.” Until then, Hohnstein has a little advice for other up-and-coming artists.

“Keep working and don’t give up,” Hohnstein said simply. “When you hit those [creative] blocks, don’t think it means that you’re done. Just always try to find a new direction and always look up to people for help. I’ve gotten a lot of help from upper-level students, alumni and faculty over the years that really paid off.”

where she wants to end up. Later on, she hopes to pursue her master’s degree at the School of Art Institute of Chicago with a dual degree in Arts Administration & Policy and Modern Art History, Theory & Criticism.

Hower admits, “I’ve come a very long way from my freshman year.” Maturity in both mind and talent surely comes with age—a lesson that Hower has learned well.

Until then, Hower leaves us with a little insight about her as a person. “I’m constantly finding areas to improve my workplace,” she said. “I’m great at problem solving, and believe in a highly efficient workspace. I see solutions others may not see. Creative minds function differently than others’. We are assets to this world—a necessity.”

The 21-year-old senior from Seymour, Wis. is in her final semester as a Studio Art major with an emphasis in Painting and a minor in Psychology.

“All my life I believed that art had to be realistic,” Hower said. “My freshman and sophomore years were dedicated to portraits and trying to get the likeness of the identity. I was stuck in a rut that I just couldn’t get out of. However, now that I have allowed myself to work the way I want to, it’s really paid off.”

“The best part about SAIC’s program is that it allows flexibility in which career I would like to pursue,” said Hower. “I feel flexibility in career options is especially important in today’s job market.”

Like any other artist, student or professional, Hower has faced her share of challenges over the years. “I always struggled with trusting myself as an artist,” she said. “I was truly dependent on what other’s thought of my work. I was never satisfied with anything I made. As soon as I let go, experimented and had some fun, the struggle started to disappear.”

After she graduates, Hower plans to move home and volunteer her time at local art museums until she decides

ccording to 23-year-old Calvin Keyes, “Video seems limitless. Every single thing you see, hear, and is considered.”

Keyes is a fifth year Multimedia Design student from Pulaski, Wis. looking to graduate this May. Upon coming to University of Wisconsin– Stout, Keyes started out in the engineering program where a healthy living was a safe bet in his eyes. After a year into the program, he realized it wasn’t a good fit for him and switched his major to Environmental Science. A week later, Keyes took a leap of faith, dropped ten science credits, and added nine art credits, switching into Multimedia Design. “I was in classes with kids that had been into art their entire lives, but I brought some serious motivation for improvement to the table along with a fresh perspective,” Keyes admitted. “I won things and got into shows, and after a couple years of doing video arts, I realized it was the right kind of complex for my brain.”

He advises other students in similar situations. “Don’t be afraid to experiment with arts,” he said. “I thought I wanted to be a graphic designer, until I worked for the Housing department as a designer for a year. I fizzled out of that real quick, and I found graphic design was not my thing.” Through his journey, Keyes has developed work that has received several awards, including Best of Show in the Fashion Without Fabric contest

FAB Magazine // 036

at UW–Stout and taking 2nd place in a weekend challenge put on by Vimeo, an international video website (vimeo.com)

Keyes admits there have been struggles throughout his years in the major. “Staying motivated and inspired in the winter is hard,” he said, but he finds that rock climbing and running are two ways to cure the creative block. On the contrary, it is obvious that Keyes has serious strengths that are emitted through his work.

He said, “My biggest strength is collaborating with people. Working with others is inspiring, and I don’t think anything truly great can be accomplished alone.” Art majors often struggle to keep their creative juices flowing. Keyes offers some advice.

“Surrounding yourself with creative people will help to keep things fun,” he offered. “Also, not all ‘creatives’ are created equal. Some art kids are cut out for the completive corporate gig, and some are not. Let yourself be drawn to the life you want to live, and once you truly put your mind to it you will attract it.”

Keyes is still on the job hunt for his future career and ready to learn the industry through a professional standpoint. He said future employers and professionals in the industry must know “I want to know everything about everything.”

industrial design By Alexandra floersch

hat inspires me most is looking back, being a young kid and seeing what I loved to do and how that is relating to me now—just being able to follow through with my dreams,” said Cayle Damrow, a senior from Park Falls, Wis. Damrow’s style is one to note—with his army green wool coat, embellished with leather sleeves and brass buckles, all topped with retro glasses.

Despite his infectious sense of fashion, Damrow has an eye for more than just style. He flourishes as an Industrial Design student and Business Administration minor at the University of Wisconsin–Stout.

However, he admits, “I am a sucker for fashion because of the emotional beauty that it brings out in each of us—expressing how and what we feel inside. It can set you free. That’s why I chose to do a fashion-related product [for senior show], because of the personal emotion it can entail.”

Damrow was inspired for his senior show this spring by the internship he held with Shwood Eyewear last summer. “My goal… is to create a new line of fashionable, wooden eyewear that offers an opportunity for personal expression, personalization and interaction,” Damrow explained. “Then hopefully, I can land a position in the industry where I can help any organization be successful.”

FAB Magazine // 038

Until then, Damrow is working to become the best designer he can be. Recently, he was informed that he was nominated for the UW–Stout Industrial Design Merit Award, meaning he has the possibility of competing against others in the nation with his design projects. Damrow will submit examples of his industrial design work and if chosen as the top candidate in the school, he will go on to present his work against other colleges in the nation.

“My dad texted me when he found out I was nominated… and said, ‘See, I told you all that hard work would paid off’,” Damrow said. “I’m a very modest person, so it’s really cool when you receive a big award, like the Merit Award, or that first internship. Then its like, ‘Okay, I’m definitely doing something right.’” Damrow admitted he didn’t arrive where he is on talent alone.

“I am a hard worker,” he said with confidence. “That is one of those things that has always been instilled in me. Knowing that an employer can trust you to get the job done is always what my family has stressed; I’m a team player.”

Directed to underclassmen in the future, Damrow offers a bit of insight on the journey to becoming a successful designer: “Hang in there. I know the first couple classes that you take in Industrial Design are very, very strenuous and time-consuming, but if this is what you love, there is going to be great things that come down the road for you. The relationship bonds you will build with your classmates over those next couple years are awesome; they start to become your best friends.”

interior design By Alexandra floersch

T

hree interior design students at the University of Wisconsin-Stout are making history this year.

“As far as I know there’s never been a group senior project—and we proposed it. We all had this idea that we would have individual projects within the group,” said Julia Horner, one of the women making history. Innovation is key to design according to Horner, Stephanie Schmitt and Megan Ruhlach. They are using it to their advantage by collaborating on their Interior Design Senior Show project. “Why not tackle it together and take a different approach to senior show?” Horner offered.

Schmitt added, “We just thought it was more realistic, like a real firm we will be working in.”

The three are working together to conquer a project with an approach that will go beyond the past norms. They took a focus on Minneapolis transportation, specifically expanding the possibilities of the Minneapolis Light Rail (Metro Transit), Midtown Greenway, major bus routes, bike trails and the highway that runs through. Together the women are designing three unique “hubs” that will cater to the needs of travelers. Horner’s design focuses on the hub that would provide conferencing and lodging for travelers through the airport, while Schmitt’s invention will be a “green space” for bikers in the Minneapolis area. Rulach’s design takes

FAB Magazine // 040

us to the future of transportation—a port for parking and charging electric cars, a kiosk to rent a car by the hour and a dealership. While the project requires the students to collaborate as a whole, the women agree that it is necessary to focus more intricately on each of their separate projects.

“By now, you can look at someone’s presentation in class and know whose it is. Your personality and your style is what gets you a job,” Schmitt said. “Especially in this project—it’s really important, although our style is really similar, that we each have a very specific voice within it,” Ruhlach added.

Group projects can be a nightmare for some. Miscommunication, exhaustion and an uneven workload can all cause unneeded tension. So what’s the trick to this trio’s success? “If anything gets stressful, we turn it into a joke so we can laugh it off,” Ruhlach said.

Horner added, “our personalities are so that we can’t take anything so seriously that it starts to take away from the fun of what we are doing.”

Although much collaboration is needed on this masterpiece, the three women are unique in and of themselves.

STEPHANIE SCHMITT

Originally from Waconia, Minn., Schmitt, 21, would like to concentrate on a career in restaurant design and branding after graduation. Schmitt has been set on interior design for as long as she can recall. “I remember being a really young kid and walking into a [room], getting

excited to look around the corner and explore,” she said. “I would never be playing Barbie’s with my cousins. I would be using building blocks with my brother, and with the moms picking out painting colors. [Interior design] was an easy choice for me!” With roots like that, it isn’t surprising to hear what passion lies within Schmitt. “I’m never not excited about something,” she said. “Even though I might be working on a project that is not my forte, I think being excited is what I bring to the table.”

View more of Stephanie’s work on her website at stephanieoliviaschmitt.com

MEGAN RUHLACH

Ruhlach is up for adventure. The 22-year-old from Red Wing, Wis. is willing to move across the states to pursue commercial design with restaurants and hospitality, and hopes to incorporate some form of graphic design with branding and logos.

“I was much more interested in the studio art portion of it when I got [to UW-Stout],” Ruhlach said. “Even still, things like painting, drawing and sketching are what get me excited— how that can translate into the presentation of [design] and the way you create spaces is unreal.” Even so, Ruhlach admits she has a trait beyond her studio art skills that seems to shine above all. “My stronger trait is my ability to connect with people—making people laugh, lightening situations—I really like bonding with people that way,” she said.

JULIA HORNER

Horner, from Duluth, Minn., has her hands full with a double major in Interior Design and Psychology.

“I think I just have a strong interest in the interaction between someone and the space that they’re in or even just their surroundings in general,” Horner explained. “Everyone forms their own attachments. To be able to facilitate how they form those attachments or at least play a part in it is really exciting.” Much like Ruhlach, Horner hopes to make designing for commercial hospitality her career, including elemental product design or furniture design within it.

“The possibilities are endless in design—there’s never an excuse to become dull or complacent in your work,” she said. But when the hurdles arise, what does Horner suggest? “Entering into a new job, you’re not going to know everything,” she said. “Just be ok with it. Throwing yourself into it is when you’re going to grow the most.” For more on Julia, visit juliahorner.com

fancy feline: the cat eye Eyeliner frenzy By taylor marker

E

veryone wants to show off their big, beautiful eyes. However, the way the eyeliner is applied will make the difference in how dramatic the eyes appear. With the following cat eye styles, you can treat every day as if it were a photo shoot and your eyes will be in the spotlight.

CAT EYE

This swoop style is chic and sophisticated. Start by applying your eyeliner thin by the edge of the eyelid, and continue to thicken the line. This style is a dramatic cat-eye look that works great to make your eyes stand out.

DOUBLE CAT EYE

This double cat-eye gives your eyes a sexy, voluptuous look. Make the boys stare with this style. Start by applying a low cat eye, then swooping a higher cat eye above, leaving a split in between. Add a little smoke beneath your eye, and you’re ready to rock the town.

COLOR SPLASH CAT EYE

This style is similar to the first style shown, except we’re adding a little smoke and color to the under-layer of your eye. Apply a bright tone of eye shadow to your look and it will make you feel fierce.

guide to flawless skin: ingredients you need in your beauty regimen . . .

By Sara Franc

L

ately, the cosmetic section of the store has gotten out of control, seeming to be the result of every brand competing for the consumer’s attention. With this abundant selection of skincare products springing up, it can be difficult to know what really will work and what is just a hype. Glancing at the list of foreign words that are supposed to be the ingredients is completely useless. Polyenylphosphotidyl Choline? Alpha-Lipoic Acid? The ingredients may as well be written in a different language. Forget all of the fancy terminology and stick with the basics. This quick list will allow you to narrow down your scope of ingredients and help you determine which is best for your skin type. Retinol Cream, a derivative of vitamin A, and has been used in skincare treatment for almost 40 years, but why? The answer is simple: it works. Retinol is a powerful antioxidant that protects the skin from free radicals, generates cell growth and repairs damaged cells. Retinol is often used in anti-aging creams to minimize fine lines and wrinkles and improve the skin’s texture.

FAB Magazine // 050

Retinol has received a bad reputation over the years because, often times, these retinoids can cause dryness and flaking, as well as redness. To prevent these undesirable effects, begin applying the cream every third night, explains Leslie Baumann, MD, director of the Cosmetic Medicine and Research Institute at the University of Miami. Vitamin A can also cause skin to be more sensitive to sunlight, so it is essential to apply retinol in the evenings.

Although there are many benefits to the use of salicylic acid, it is advised against for those with darker skin tones because the acne tends to be replaced with brown or black spots.

Salicylic Acid is derived from the bark of the willow tree and has been used since the ancient times to treat pain, fever and inflammation. However, it wasn’t until the 20th century that scientists began to look at the properties of salicylic acid for skin treatment. Since then, salicylic acid has become a leader in skin-care treatments for its proven ability to exfoliate the skin increasing cell turnover.

Please note that witch hazel found in supermarkets or grocery stores contain alcohol. It is recommended to avoid this distilled form of witch hazel to maintain all the beneficial tannins, which provide for the strong antioxidant properties for cleansing the skin. Thayer’s Alcohol-Free Witch Hazel is an excellent and affordable witch hazel formula.

Retinol can be found in many overthe-counter skin-care products, but be aware that if retinol is not listed in the first five ingredients, it probably won’t be too effective.

The chemical properties of salicylic acid are closely related to aspirin— they both stimulate circulation: the difference is that salicylic acid stimulates circulation of oil out of the pores and relieves inflammation and redness. In addition to opening up the pores, salicylic acid increases collagen production and removes discoloration from the skin.

Witch Hazel has been used throughout history, originally for medicinal purposes by the American Indians. Now, witch hazel can be found in most supermarkets or drugstores at an affordable price. It is used to heal a wide range of skin problems. Witch hazel can be used to reduce the inflammation of a blemish, shrink under-eye bags, reduce appearance of varicose veins and speed up the healing time of bruises.

Overall, avoid the ingredients that sound as though they were created by a mad scientist, and stick to the familiar. There are still hundreds of other ingredients that can be found in the cosmetics section, but these are just a few basics that can get the product search started and get you closer to skin perfection.

Beauty

. . . and those that you should avoid By lauren langenhahn

M

any women pick out beauty products based on what they look like rather than the ingredients they consist of. This can be hazardous. While doing research, five ingredients stood out the most—the worst to avoid when picking the newest and greatest beauty product. These ingredients include lead, triclosan, formaldehyde, toluene and hydroquinone. These can be harmful in many ways; they can cause irritated skin, dizziness and many other negative side effects. Here is all you need to know about all of these products to give you the healthy glow that everyone strives for. Lead, believe it or not, can be found in about 60 percent of what most people think to be high-quality lipstick. The brand that lead is most found in is L’Oreal. It can cause attacks on your nervous system and is especially harmful to children and pregnant women. Another ingredient to watch out for is triclosan. It messes with your hormones and can cause you to become infertile. It is also one of the known causes of breast cancer. You are able to find this ingredient in deodorant, toothpaste and some soap, such as Bath and Body Works.

The ingredient formaldehyde is another ingredient to look out for. It is also thought to be a cause of cancer. The ingredient is found in hair products, such as shampoos and chemical hair straighteners.

Toluene is found in many beauty products and is dangerous for pregnant women. It can be found in nail polish, perfume and hair dye to name a few. It can cause dizziness, headaches and skin irritation. Pregnant women should not use products that contain toluene because it increases your risk of miscarriage and deformed children. It may appear on a label as phenylmethane, methylbenzene or toluol. The last ingredient that is important to watch out for is hydroquinone. This is one of the most toxic chemicals that are used beauty products. It can increase your sensitivity to UV rays, which, in turn, increases your risk of skin cancer. It is commonly found in hair relaxers, hair dye, hair extension glue, hair removers and sunless tanning products. The FDA attempted to ban this ingredient back in 2006, but has yet to be successful. The next time you go shopping for beauty products keep this list in mind. If a new product catches your eye, be sure to check its ingredients first. If it contains one of these, you may want to ask yourself if it’s worth the risk. You might be adding years to your life by avoiding them. 1

QUICK TWIST

This simple up-do is perfect for on-thego for short to medium length hair. Just a few twists and a few pins and you’re looking fabulous. Split your hair in half, take one half and twist it sideways then pin it. Take the other half and repeat to the other side, and pin it underneath the first twist. It’ll work well for those windy days keeping your hair tidy and sophisticated. If you are finding yourself waking up late and not wanting to show up like you just rolled out of bed, this is the perfect hairstyle for you. Add some accessories if desired and let the compliments come flowing.

4

BEACHY WAVES

This short hairstyle is funky and fresh. These beachy, bouncy waves will act like a party on your head. You will be the hottest girl at a summer bonfire. This hairstyle is good for any day in the summer; whether hot, humid or windy. A little curl and a little tease will make this hairstyle come alive. Make it as wild as you’d like. Just add hairspray after all that work and your spunky hairstyle will last through the day.

2

CHINESE STAIRCASE

This ambitious braid will have all eyes on you. It may look complicated, but once you get the steps down, you’ll be a pro. First, put your hair in a side ponytail. Pull one section of hair from your pony (anywhere is fine). Create the number four with the section of hair you pulled out by bending it and placing it over the hair in your pony tail. Bring your section of hair up and through your pony tail, like you are tying a knot. Add that hair back into the pony, and repeat. Repeat these steps until you have reached the end of the pony! This is the perfect braid for any occasion, and will protect your hair from any harsh summer weather.

5

KNOTTED PONY

This easy side-do is great for a chill summer day. Bring your hair to one side, and part it into two. Tie one knot and then another. Continue to wrap it up with a clear hair binder and pin it up underneath if needed. You can tease it a little bit below the knots to make it funkier. Add a little hairspray to the knot to make sure it stays intact and neat. Feel free to add a cute flower clip or headband.

3

THE HAIR BOW

Looking for an easy, cute hairstyle? Look no further! This adorable hairstyle is quick, easy and the future envy of your friends. Just take two strands of hair from the front, pull them back and simply tie a bow. It will hold the rest of your hair back so it stays out of your face. When you feel like dressing up cute and chic, try this hairstyle! To make the bow more noticeable, straighten your hair first and then apply it. Even add small waves for a summer feel.

6

DOUBLE-SINGLE BRAID

This hairstyle is a pulled back with two braids at the sides then combined into one braid at the end. This hairstyle helps hold down the fly-aways during the humid weather. You can add a cute headband to complete this style.

before applying the spray will create even more volume. The hairspray also provides all day hold and smells delicious too. Along with giving your hair some body, it holds curls well for most of the day. This is my go-to hairspray for everyday use and a night out.

For pain free brushing and healthy moisturized hair, grab Knotty to Nice Conditioning Detangler. This is liquid gold, especially for those blessed with curly hair. This product should be used every day to help maintain hair. It also has a delectable apple scent. Simply spray it in wet or dry hair before brushing and it will be easier then ever to comb through! This detangler works great for all hair types and is my favorite. With a wide variety of other products including: dry shampoo, thermal styling spray, strengthening shampoo and conditioner, shine mist, frizz control crème and curl defining crème, you can’t go wrong. Not Your Mother’s products can be used on all hair types. The packaging is appealing, they all smell good, and all the products do exactly what the say they will. Neutrogena Complete Acne Therapy System WALMART, $24.99

THE CLAIM:

“Using the two leading over-the-counter acne medications, this powerful acne kit is clinically shown to significantly reduce many signs of acne in just 4 days, including breakouts, blackheads, acne redness and inflammation. The Complete Acne Therapy System works fast while being gentle to the skin” according to Neutrogena.

THE REVIEW:

My skin is considered a “combination type” and this treatment system has been the Holy Grail to my beauty routine for the last four years. I have recommended this product to all of my friends that complain about breakouts, and they all have thanked me for it.

The therapy system includes an acne cleanser, SPF moisturizer and acne control lotion at an affordable price that can last for six to seven months. Inflammation clears up almost immediately using a combination of the three products. This product receives five out of five stars for being effective enough to clean my skin, yet gentle enough to not dry out or irritate.

Hard Candy Megawatt Smile Lipstick + Tooth Whitener WALMART, $6.00

THE CLAIM:

“You get a creamy vibrant lip color with a shimmer topcoat center at one end. On the other end is a tooth whitener to keep your smile the brightest one in the room” according to Wal-Mart.

THE REVIEW:

I was excited to try this product because of the tooth whitener that was allegedly harmless and is applied by simply brushing onto the teeth. After application, I saw no difference to the whiteness of my teeth. My speculation is that the vibrant color of the lipstick automatically makes the teeth look whiter. The gloss/lipstick is also nothing to rave about because it wears off in a short time and the texture and color has a “cheap” appearance. The one star was for the attractive packaging of the lipstick.

Capture Totale One Essential by Dior SEPHORA, $95.00

THE CLAIM:

According to Sephora, it is “an exceptionally effective agedefying step that successfully eliminates toxins down to the heart of the skin cells to: intensely regenerate, stimulate cellturnover and correct all visible signs of aging.”

THE REVIEW:

After noticing some under eye aging, I began to intensely research the Internet for a miracle cure. The search led me to Capture Totale One Essential by Dior.

As a person with extremely sensitive skin, I am usually leery to try out new skin products, but this time I was desperate.

The night I received the product, I applied the serum under my eyes, on my cheeks, and on my forehead and then went to sleep. I immediately noticed the scent, which is usually undesirable when it comes to skin products. In this case, the scent was extremely soft, feminine and luxurious. I immediately felt a dramatic difference. My skin felt so soft, creamy and velvety – nothing it had ever felt before, as I have always had trouble with my skin. I have now been using this skin product for four months with no negative side effects. While the serum did work immediately, it seems to have lost some effect since that first night. My cheeks still feel smooth, but I also have minor breakouts. I believe the under eye aging signs I saw have been slightly reversed, but time will only tell the product’s full potential.

Hint: applying the serum before moisturizing seems to allow for the moisturizer to absorb much better as well. The price is a bit steep, so it should be viewed as an investment piece. However, using one to three pumps a day should allow the product to last for at least six months. Overall, I would give this product three out of five stars.

TiGi Dumb Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner NORDSTROM, $14.99 EACH

THE CLAIM:

“TiGi Dumb Blonde Shampoo and Conditioner provides therapy for bleached or highlighted hair,” according to TiGi

THE REVIEW:

When I first found these products I was excited to bring them home and try them out. However, after continued use I did not see many results. I have been highlighting my hair for quite some time now and the search for color care is a constant one. I found this duo at Marshalls. You can find these products in salons, but being the bargain shopper that I am, I decided to hunt around for a better deal. I have seen the pair sold at Nordstrom’s Rack for around $24.99 and for about the same price points online at Amazon.com. After the first use of the product, I wasn’t thrilled but I thought that maybe my opinion would change. Unfortunately, it wasn’t so; the scent didn’t thrill me and the consistency of the conditioner was rather strange. The conditioner had a very thick viscosity similar to silly putty. The consistency made it hard to lather in my hair and much of it went down the drain. Overall, I will not be repurchasing these products due to the price point and dissatisfaction with the end results. The reasoning behind the two out of five stars is that I was not pleased with the results and prices.

Remington T-Studio Pearl Wand ULTA, $29.99

THE CLAIM:

“The Remington T-Studio Pearl Wand is the latest hair styling tool. This product features Advanced Ceramic technology for sleeker and glossier salon results at home,” according to Remington.

THE REVIEW:

Many of you ladies who follow trends will have to check out the Remington T-Studio Pearl Wand. I purchased this product from ULTA Cosmetics and I could not be happier with the results I get. Remington makes this wand in two different sizes which accommodates a multitude of hair lengths. The smaller size ranges from 1/2 inch to 1 inch and works great for short hair and those baby hairs that every female has. The larger version, ranging from 1 to 1½ inches creates those fabulous Victoria’s Secret waves that are great for those special nights. The LCD screen makes setting the temperature easy and user-friendly. The one stipulation I have about this product is that it takes a bit of time to get used to. I still bump and burn myself with it, but aside from that factor this product is great. I highly recommend trying one out and seeing all the style you can create for yourself. I gave this product four out of five stars because I really enjoy the freedom this wand gives me to style my hair. Every time I use it, my hair is soft and shiny without looking damaged and dry.

Kat Von D Painted Love Lipstick in Underage Red SEPHORA, $19.00

THE CLAIM:

“A rich, full-color lipstick from tattoo-artist Kat Von D” according to Sephora.

THE REVIEW:

If you are looking for a dramatic and bold lipstick the Kat Von D lipstick by Sephora is an excellent match. The red is deep for a classic pin-up girl look that will last throughout your dinner. The lipstick applies smoothly and stains the lip for a long-lasting, rich pigmented color. With 16 other colors to choose from, I would recommend this lipstick for any occasion to make a bold statement. I give this product four out of five stars for the rich color and long lasting effects.

the abc’s of Face creams

By sara franc

D

ivine, smooth and radiant are all qualities we desire for our skin in for those spring and summer months. However, detoxing winter skin can be problematic when deciding what skin cream to use. Celebrities and other make-up professionals are frequently boasting about the hottest products. Recently, there has been a lot of attention on anti-aging, beauty balm, and corrector creams, but what is the craze about? Some of the most iconic women in history have sworn by natural beauty regimens. The skeptic in you is probably wondering why we would need to use these highly marketed skin creams now? As it turns out, these products can help protect and prevent the skin from the toxins of found in today’s environment.

Anti-Aging

Beauty Balm

Corrector Creams

There are two different kinds of aging. The wrinkles that occur simply as a result of getting older (which, unfortunately, is a part of life) and the wrinkles that occur due to environmental factors. According to Suzan Obagi, Assistant Professor in Dermatology and Director of the Cosmetic Surgery and Skin Health Center at the University of Pittsburgh said, “After the age of 20, a person produces about 1 percent less collagen in the skin each year. As a result, the skin becomes thinner and more fragile with age.” Other environmental factors that can cause wrinkles include: sun damage, pollution and smoking.

Otherwise known as “BB creams”, beauty balm began to create a buzz a few years ago. BB creams are an allin-one skincare hybrid, or as Claire Coleman of the Daily Mail referred to them, “the Swiss Army knife of the beauty industry,” (and rightfully so). Before applying make-up, BB cream can be applied to act as a primer or a tinted moisturizer, but the beauty balm is much more than that. BB creams are a preventative skincare product and can do any or all of the following: moisturize, fight acne, even skin texture, SPF to protect from UV rays and refine fine lines and wrinkles.

With every major beauty company formulating their own version of the BB cream, it is surprising to see a new contender in town, the CC cream. Sounds like a rip-off of the BB cream and a way for corporations to make more profits, right? However, the CC cream brings a whole new level to the beauty balm industry. CC creams, or color correcting cream, provide more coverage than the BB cream, which acted more as a tinted moisturizer. Those with very light or very dark complexions had trouble blending the BB creams to their skin with their one universal color. The mousse-like texture of the CC cream allows for easier blending to fit a wider variety of skin tones. Along with the traditional benefits of the BB cream, CC cream adds an additional element. By focusing on existing skin issues, the CC cream boasts that they fade dark spots, sunspots and post-acne marks over time.

Ingredients in anti-aging creams can help prevent formation of wrinkles. The best news is: precautionary measures can be taken early on. Applying retinol, a derivative of vitamin A, a few times per week in the evenings can help prevent wrinkles later on in life. Retinoids have been used for fighting aging skin for years; they have been proven to improve skin elasticity and stimulate collagen production.
