I am confused that “theory” identified with word method. If we make this sentence affirmative we get: “theory it is method”. It is a paradox - that the theory is a set of actions. I understood your question right, but may be it should be rephrased. For instance, theory can be foundation but not a method, isn’t it?

1. A little bit information about yourself. In which direction you work? Your works really different from other, can we call them Art-fashion? How much time did You make photos? I don’t separate photo on the directions. Photo could be nice or not. Accordingly, I do not try to work in one direction, and make shots as I can. Now photo takes not so much place in my life like it was early, because I became involved in various activities connected with media. 2. How you began make photos? Is it was conjuncture or something else? I always knew that I will be connected with art. Once I took camera in my hands and understood that it is quite simple and available way of self-expression. Motivation and conjuncture always go hand in hand. So, when person listens to itself everything stars to turn easily and naturally. 3. There are a lot of photographers who speak about equipment as one of the most important tools. But what about theory, is it the most important way of creating amazing works?

8

Now there are numerous useful literature. When you have the stock of knowledge and minimal equipment is it possible rich the success? I don’t know what is “minimal equipment”! May be you mean: nowadays there are a lot of useful literature exist. Once you have necessary/sufficient/extensive stock of knowledge than in the presence of a minimum set of equipment is it possible rich the success? In fact of the matter that equipment it is just a tool. I can’t answer for other photographers. Personally, I didn’t read any book about photo or studio lighting. I remember my first studio shooting. The room was still smell after painting the walls, waiting for the model I unpacked the new one-piece and frantically tried to figure out how it all turned on and working. I had to try all the schemes during the shooting process. And after this first shooting I have never experienced technical difficulties, because for me is the most likely to learn everything by yourself. When I just came to Moscow some time I taught the photo. This experience helps me understand many things. And for that I’m thankful organizers of all photography schools. I have never been on any master class and don’t mind to do that. I’m not going to teach someone and give master class. For me educational process in photography schools it is meeting of people that stopped ask themselves

right questions on the one hand, and people that ask themselves indirect question on the other hand. Any education begins from right questions. The life experience helps realize difference between education and accomplishment. A lot of people lost representation how really educational process happening. As a result, I see photographers that are not different from each other. But they have read dozens of books and visited a lot of workshops. And they didn’t ask themselves the main question from which everything begins. Books are important but they don’t teach you be good photographer. They give only applied knowledge. So, if person knows what it wants temporary absence of expensive equipment is not a trouble. 4. From ideas to logical finish: how do You come up with and carry out your work? 4. Let’s divide equipment and art. When I make photos for customer I do work. It has to be done nice. And there’s nothing to add. In art there is different. That what people do creatively directly depends from theirs outlook. If I’m inspired, brainstorm isn’t required. I just do.

I more prefer feel the beauty in life than show it in photo. That is reason why I make photos easily. Photo can say a lot but it loses a sense. 6. Your tips or wishes to photographers, what is to be feared and what they should know, what should read? As you can see I mostly don’t know about photo anything, I didn’t read books and my knowledge is derived from experience. It is dangerous for photographers to seek the success, because it has no relation to reality. I don’t shear with people the rush for cheap fame. In such situations person loses ability to think bright and clear. As a result, we get the army crafts, which make the same. 7. Have you ever taken part in exhibitions, festivals, competition? Is it just PR or something higher?

Did I understand correctly that laziness leads to an excess of inspiration?

I think that took part in exhibitions and competitions is marvelous. But there are various exhibitions and competitions exist. At the exhibition there is always a context in which the exhibition is assembles. Competition has context as well. Serious events organized with specific goals, for instance, to illustrate some message. If I post up on the walls my works and invite people drink champagne it will be PR, may be. It is self-deception

You can be inspired to start work. The idea and its realization is enough knowledge, your own vision and way of thinking?!

8. Which of these do you have: prizes, awards, participation in festivals, participation in promotional projects? And what of all the more important for You?

Is it assertion? Life around is a source of inspiration for me. I think activity that helps person feel all the fullness of life’s properties is surpasses all art. This activity is the most important thing that man can do in his life. For that you have to understand and find out your mission. And it is difficult. Now I can’t speak only about photo, because for me all these things are interconnected.

All of this exists. But I’m not really chasing awards. If I win money or new camera will I become happier? Enduring values must have a value, but not prizes.

5.

Who or what inspires You?

I always notice paradox such as the moment of beauty. This is the most elusive and wonderful moment that you can feel only by heart. This feeling can’t be determined, depicted on canvas or described in words. But this moment is the key to art. Photographer or artist feels it and tries to lock on a plan. But it’s doesn’t matter, because this moment is only for you. And others will not see it.

9. What we have to expect from you? Do You have plans of projects, world-tour with photosets? 9. I always have plans about new projects. We are preparing international project, which include work in different countries and in various parts of art. 10. Wishing for FABEEX: what You can say to our projects? If the projects are aimed at educating, it will necessary for people. Good luck!

La Griffe Studio Lyon, France www.lagriffe-studio.com

The authors cover photo 1. A little bit information about yourself. In which direction you work? Your works really different from other, can we call them Art-fashion? How much time did You make photos? Hi, we are two French photographers, Antoine Barbot (28 years old) and Thomas Carrage (30 years old). We have known each other since university though. We share a passion for powerful images and mediums to show and share it : photographs, paintings, movies… We shoot photography for 6 years now, and we decided to associate in January 2012. How to call what we shoot ? Well, I would say we shoot “sophisticated pictures”, will it be art, fashion, beauty… we don’t really know. It depends on what people want to see in it ! The work you feature in this online magazine is a project, created for our own sake. But it happened to please a lot of people, working in fashion and beauty… 2. How you began make photos? Is it was conjuncture or something else? We were both interested in arts from the start, as far as we can remember. After a few tries in music or cinema, photography just happened to be the right medium for both of us. That’s where we met, practicing photography in the street, trying things, learning on our own. Neither of us has any formal training in a photography school, but we both had the chance to spend time with older professionnal photographer. To be honest, that’s where you learn a lot about the job. Besides, we both love to watch exhibitions, discover new works by artists we follow (prints or on the web).

18

3. There are a lot of photographers who speak about equipment as one of the most important tools. But what about theory, is it the most important way of creating amazing works? We have variety of useful literature now. If we will have enough knowledge and minimum equipment can we reach the success? We both think equipment has to stay the tool to create. It’s not an achievement in itself to have the last brand new equipment ! It may be silly to say, but your camera and the lighting gear has to be nothing more than the brushes and pigments of the painter… Of course, knowing the theory of photography allow you to solve technical matters more easily and quickly, but it will never give you the creative breath every piece needs to exist. A good and simple idea, some time to think about it, the solution (or the tricks) to answer the technical issues about this idea, and I think you got the recipe of success. Well maybe not, the hard part is to show the pictures to people after that… 4. From ideas to logical finish: how do You come up with and carry out your work? We spend a lot of time meeting each other, talking about ideas, discussing and developing ideas which can actually work. We like to spend a lot of time on the pre-production, building every detail from the light to the makeup long before the shooting. This is a bit weird, but the photoshoot is almost the less important part of our approach since the images are ready in our minds before starting this part. We feel that working hard on a project before we click allows us to have a lot of «creative freedom» during the photoshoot. For example, we never use ambient light : we always create our own, because we don’t want to work with something we cannot fully control.

19

5.

Who or what inspires You?

We are both under a strong influence of german expressionist cinema and advertising photography at the same time. We watch a lot of contemporary art exhibitions. Erwin Olaf is one of the photographers we follow very closely. We love how he builds a photographic serie, his narrative power (especially in his late work). He really knows how to tell a story with a very few powerful pictures. Of course we also like his lighting technique and the very clean look of his productions. Rankin is also an inspiration for us, a very powerful and bold artist. He has an eye for graphism and geometry very few possess. 6. Your tips or wishes to photographers, what is to be feared and what they should know, what should read? A good advice to give is an advice we received a few years ago : what is important is your personal work. You get noticed by this work. Use the photography to express yourself, and your vision of the world. Do what makes you happy, because as an artist, you can’t get happier than the moment you see something on the paper, which existed only in your mind a few weeks before. There is a lot of good photographers and artists out there, but this must not be a fear and a reason to stop creating. If you feel you have a story to tell, an image to create, if at some point you feel the urge to give it life/ birth, then you MUST create it. After that, the hard work can begin : find the better way to show it to (a lot of) people. Reading advice : we read a lot of fashion magazine (Numero, WAD, Please!, Glint, Hunger), online creative and fashion blog… but most importantly, go to exhibition, even little one. It brings a lot to see full projects at the end of their creation. 7. Have you ever taken part in exhibitions, festivals, competition? Is it just PR or something higher? Taking part in exhibitions is very important I think. It means you can create something “complete”, from the idea to the end (print or any other medium). We both have been in exhibition, personal, or group projects. We are not very into “competition” flourishing all around internet…

20

8. Which of these do you have: prizes, awards, participation in festivals, participation in promotional projects? And what of all the more important for You? Antoine has won an international price a few years ago “Prix du Festival International de l’Image 2007” in Nice (France). That’s all we have ! What is important for us is to create our own images, to work on projects (commercial or personal) and have people seeing it. 9. What we have to expect from you? Do You have plans of projects, world-tour with photosets? We have been on assignment a lot lately, creating a few advertising campaign for different clients. We have a few big projects upcoming, mixing personal views and commercial works, which should be ready at the end of this year. 10. Wishing for FABEEX: what You can say to our projects? We encourage people to appreciate themselves, their work and their way of life, we want to help the important material. We strongly cheer and encourage FABEEX in your project to show strong works, pushing people to have a different point of view about the world they live in. Displaying artistic and quality fashion work encourage people to push farther with their dreams. We just hope we will be able to read the magazine in English since we are not that good in Russian : “Eta Kracivaya prepadavatielnitza” is all I can remember from my russian teachings ! Cheers to Fabeex team, thanks for featuring our images and work.

David Marvier Paris, France www.davidmarvier.com 1. A little bit information about yourself. In which direction you work? Your works really different from other, can we call them Art-fashion? How much time did You make photos? I’m David Marvier, photographer based in Paris but raised in South West France. I’m working as a photographer since many years now. I started as an assistant in studios and as 3rd, 2nd and then 1st assistant. Directly with photgraphers. I’d the chance to work with really well knowned names., really talented people. Starting from there, i had the oportunity to be inspired by those people, to see so much technics, so much different ways to take pictures. 2. How you began make photos? Is it was conjuncture or something else? I began to take pictures after trying to draw. Witch a suck at. A long time ago, like 15 years. I was still living in South. Shooting streets, landcapes, atc... Nothing about fashion. I didn’t realize it will take all my time and life at this time. 3. There are a lot of photographers who speak about equipment as one of the most important tools. But what about theory, is it the most important way of creating amazing works? We have variety of useful literature now. If we will have enough knowledge and minimum equipment can we reach the success? Equipment is of course really important. Each photographer has his own «babies», preferencies. I realized that when i was an assistant. But the thing is, you can have the best camera ever doesn’t mean you’ll have the best picture ever. In an other hand, each camera is useful for a type of picture and useless for an other. Give a medium format digital to a war photographer and see what happens ! It’s heavy, slow and complicated. Perfect for studio but not for a run under bullets... Success has nothiung to do with equipment and sometimes with the pictures themselves... 4. From ideas to logical finish: how do You come

30

up with and carry out your work? I actually start with an idea with is coming from a movie, from stories i see on magazines, on advertising, etc... and i start adapting the mood with different references... I build a team... i do a casting, book a studio and when everybody is finally ready , motivated, and free to go .. we go. 5.

Who or what inspires You?

As i said earlier, magazines, other photographers, advertising, moivies, books, travels, exhibitions, etc.... 6. Your tips or wishes to photographers, what is to be feared and what they should know, what should read? The same as i always read everywhere ! Nothing comes alone, nothing is easy. Many people want to be a photographer, specially with digital now. So WORK WORK WORK and patience !! (the bad part) 7. Have you ever taken part in exhibitions, festivals, competition? Is it just PR or something higher? No but planning to... My work is taking a turn now. I’ve an other purpose than only fashion/beauty. All the life style and mood around motorbikes and cars. Specially vinrtages ones... So starting from there i’ll try to find people interested. 8. What we have to expect from you? Do You have plans of projects, world-tour with photosets? I’ve many plans especially finding sponsors to send me shooting beauty and fashion in amazing and wild places around the planet. 9. Wishing for FABEEX: what You can say to our projects? I think your projects are really interesting. The mag is high level. Nice shoots.

Alessandro Polia Roma, Italy www.alessandropolia.com 1. A little bit information about yourself. In which direction you work? I work in a creative direction. Your works really different from other, can we call them Art-fashion? How much time did You make photos? No, don’t’ call art-fashion, call creative style, I prefer first thinking about a project, then make it. I work every day in an international advertising agency where every day I first think, than manke. As a photographer I apply the same 2. How you began make photos? Is it was conjuncture or something else? I started working as photographer 4 years ago. I started with the passion of post production, then I studied how works a reflex camera. 3. There are a lot of photographers who speak about equipment as one of the most important tools. But what about theory, is it the most important way of creating amazing works? We have variety of useful literature now. If we will have enough knowledge and

40

minimum equipment can we reach the success? I really don’t have a lot of equipment, I usually use 3 flashes for the studio photo set, and use the natural ligh for the outdoor shootings. I think the most important thing is to have taste for light, and know hot to use it. 4. From ideas to logical finish: how do You come up with and carry out your work? First I have an idea, then I think how it can become a visual. Then I think how that sketch visual can bicome a real image, a picture. Then I start finding everything I need, from the styling to the particular object for the set, from the mua to the model. 5.

Who or what inspires You?

My girlfriend, the traffic in the morning, my perversions, music. 6. Your tips or wishes to photographers, what is to be feared and what they should know, what should read?

Se all the works of the big photographers, then try to understand how to shoot pictures like them. I think all photographers should read comics, it’s the best way to “learn the art direction” of a photo. 7. Have you ever taken part in exhibitions, festivals, competition? Is it just PR or something higher? I take part to 3 exhibitions in Rome, just for PR. 8. Which of these do you have: prizes, awards, participation in festivals, participation in promotional projects? And what of all the more important for You? Awards, I’d like to win a lot in the advertising world.

I’d like to work in New York as art director and photographer, I hope I’ll be there next year. 10. Wishing for FABEEX: what You can say to our projects? We encourage people to appreciate themselves, their work and their way of life, we want to help the important material. I could tell you to help artists and photographer in showing their works, and give opportunities to work all over the world. Find partnership with sponsors that help artists, and stuff like that. To all the artists and all the photographer I just say one thing: Rock n’ roll

9. What we have to expect from you? Do You have plans of projects, world-tour with photosets?

Juco Photo Los Angeles, CA, USA www.jucophoto.com 1. A little bit information about yourself. In which direction you work? We are JUCO - there’s Julia Galdo and Cody CLoud in our team. We shoot people, usually in bright, poppy environments. Your works really different from other, can we call them Art-fashion? How much time did You make photos? Cody and I have been shooting images for over 11 years. JUCO has been its own entity since 2009. 2. How you began make photos? Is it was conjuncture or something else? We first began shooting together because of cost reasons - photography was expensive right out of college. So we split the cost. The longer we did this, the more our voice as a duo emerged, and after a while, it seemed apparent to us that we should be working together. 3. There are a lot of photographers who speak about equipment as one of the most important tools. But what about theory, is it the most important way of creating amazing works? We have variety of useful literature now. If we will have enough knowledge and minimum equipment can we reach the success? That’s a tricky question. The answer is that there is no set way in succeeding. The most important thing is to shoot a lot, and to look at a lot of work. Equipment comes when money comes. Or you can take our small loan to get the things you truly need. We think the money comes when you’re making a lot of work, getting better and gaining more experience. 4. From ideas to logical finish: how do You come up with and carry out your work? Every project is different. The way we shoot each project varies depending on the creative problem

50

that we’re solving. Cody and I usually talk extensively about creative solutions to each assignment, and then delegate who handles what within that shoot. Of course we each have our strengths and weaknesses, so we try and pin point how to best use our strengths for each project. 5.

Who or what inspires You?

Everything and anything - it’s very open. As I said, we look at a lot of work - all the time. That’s very very inspiring and it’s also informing. But we can also find inspiration at a thrift store, a water park or in our living rooms. 6. Your tips or wishes to photographers, what is to be feared and what they should know, what should read? Nothing should be feared - it’s not worth it. Take your time, this business takes time. Have Moxy. 7. Have you ever taken part in exhibitions, festivals, competition? Is it just PR or something higher? We won PDN 30 last year - that was very exciting for us. I think there’s a level of PR involved, yes. But we grew up looking at the winners of PDN 30 and never thought in a thousand years that we’d be included in it. THat was so satisfying. 8. What we have to expect from you? Do You have plans of projects, world-tour with photosets? Right now we just finished a campaign for Cheerios, a shoot of Solange Knowles for Complex magazine, and have a couple of personal fashion projects in the works. We are currently switching reps, which is exciting. So look for us at Art&Motion in the fall.
