Because there are books no home should be without Because these are the books that will inspire young minds

CHRISTOPHER REID is the author of many books of poems, including A Scattering (winner of the Costa Book of the Year Award). From 1991 to 1999 he was Poetry Editor at Faber & Faber, where he worked with Ted Hughes on such books as Tales from Ovid and Birthday Letters and later edited Letters of Ted Hughes (2007). He is now a freelance writer and lives in London. ELLIOT ELAM is a self-trained illustrator living in Walthamstow. Over the years he has illustrated for all sorts of publications, including the BBC, Channel 4, the Big Issue, the Guardian, Penguin Books and Victoria University Press. Elliot has also built theatre sets and painted scenery and carnival floats at Disneyland. He illustrated the cover for Six Bad Poets, also by Christopher Reid.

Old Toffer’s Book of Consequential Dogs Christopher Reid and Elliot Elam I’ve rounded up a rowdy assembly Of my own Consequential Dogs As counterparts to Eliot’s mogs. Mine are a rough and ready bunch: You wouldn’t take them out to lunch . . . But if they strike you as friendly, funny, Full of bounce and fond of a romp, Forgetful of poetic pomp, I trust you’ll take them as you find them And, at the very least, not mind them. T. S. Eliot’s best-selling collection of practical cat poems is one of the most successful poetry collections of all time. Now, for the first time in Faber history, a companion volume will be published. Originally conceived by Eliot himself, Old Toffer’s Book of Consequential Dogs is as witty, varied and ingenious as Eliot’s cats.

Faber & Faber has published children’s books since 1929. Some of our very first publications included Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats by T. S. Eliot, starring the now world-famous Macavity, and The Iron Man by Ted Hughes. Our catalogue at the time said that: ‘it is by reading such books that children learn the difference between the shoddy and the genuine’. We still believe in the power of reading to transform children’s lives.

Lady Audley’s Secret

Mary Elizabeth Braddon

Part of our collection of Young Adult Classics, a sensationalist story involving bigamy, arson and murder. Women are never lazy. They don’t know what it is to be quiet. They are Semiramides, and Cleopatras, and Joan of Arcs, Queen Elizabeths, and Catharine the Seconds . . . To call them the weaker sex is to utter a hideous mockery. They are the stronger sex, the nosier, the more persevering, the most self-assertive sex. The beautiful and innocent-seeming Lady Audley is uncovered in this stunning novel that combines a crime thriller with historical drama to create an unputdownable tale that has been perennially popular since its publication in 1862. MARY ELIZABETH BRADDON (1835–1915) has been called the ‘Queen of Sensation’ for her exceedingly popular novels, including Lady Audley’s Secret. She also wrote plays; contributed essays, short stories and poems to Punch and The World; and edited two literary magazines, Temple Bar and Belgravia
