TRANSFORMING EXPERIENCE WORKSHOP Exploring ways to find opportunities with Brexit in Gibraltar
“To achieve great things, two things are needed: a plan and not quite enough time Leonard Bernstein
The purpose of the workshop is to explore the impact of Brexit and enable business owners in Gibraltar to identify solutions and opportunities in it. In this workshop, participants will start by examining the context in which they are working on and identify the benefits and the tensions this generates. Then, using the Transformative Experience Framework (TEF), participants will be encouraged to identify new perspectives and ideas about Brexit and how to develop new opportunities from it.

Long, S. (2016). Transforming Experience in Organisations: A Framework for Organisational Research and Consultancy. London: Karnac Books.
The Framework Roles taken up at work at home or in social contexts are situated at the intersection of four domains of experience: the experience of being a person (psychological), the experience of being in a system (e.g., organisations, institutions), the experience of being in a context (social, economic, political, global) and the experience of connectedness with source, that is the domain of deeply held values. As a framework, rather than a specific theory, the TEF offers a dynamic, facilitative tool. Workplace situations can be seen through a systemic lens, and dilemmas and problems can be approached in ways that avoid ‘personalisation’ of issues. The framework focuses on experience, with the idea that experiences are filtered through different lenses. Our experience is an integrated whole, which can be viewed through different lenses to enable us to work out how to take action in role.
PERSON
ROLE
Persons in roles are subject to the pushes and pulls of forces well beyond them, forces that originate in systems and contexts. For example, in the context of country, there are expectations put upon people’s actions through the laws of the land.
Role lies at the intersection of the person, system, and context. When a person joins a group or organisation, she enters a particular system and its context. The person brings her personality, skills, capacities, interests, motivations, emotional propensities, and personal history. These characteristics may fill the roles that she takes up.
All this influences how we behave in role. How will Brexit have an impact to the Person in role?
SYSTEM We are all born into social systems: our family, our local community and our country are some that come immediately to mind. These systems have their own cultures, languages and rules, and they generally have a place for us to fit into and expectations about us. These systems influence and constrain us in our personal development. As we grow, we become part of an increasing network of systems: school, work organisations, social and sporting groups, perhaps religious or political groups. The experience of being in a system brings forward the tension between personal needs and desires and the needs and desires of others. What is the impact to the System that BREXIT will bring?
CONTEXT The idea of context speaks for itself. It is the environment within which a social system occurs. That environment includes the physical, political, economic, social, historical, international, and emotional contexts for the system. What is currently occurring in the context will have an effect on persons, organisations and social systems. What is the Context in Gibraltar? How is the Context linked to Brexit and how will Brexit reshape the Context?
However, because roles belong to, and are also shaped by, the system and its context, the person does not so much create the role as fill it. It is as if the person ‘colours’ the role with her own way of doing things and with the valencies (Bion 1961) that drive her. Different people will take up the same roles in different ways. In what way Brexit will affect your Role?
SOURCE Source are the values one stand for, in the work place, in society, in their family, in every system that people belong to. How will Brexit change the values we use? How Brexit will change the way in which we relate to Europe?
Persons, roles, systems, contexts and even connectedness to source change over time. Roles are constantly in need of renegotiation given changing persons, systems and contexts. These are dynamic, not static, concepts. Long, S. (2016). Transforming Experience in Organisations: A Framework for Organisational Research and Consultancy. London: Karnac Books.
