Rainscreen Panels

Rainscreen panels are the top layer on a cladding system that typically comprises an outer skin, incorporating air gaps, fixed to a support frame, which locates onto the structural wall. If insulation is not already in the structural wall, it is possible to introduce insulation between the building envelope and the outer skin or rainscreen panel.

Ideally suited to both new build projects and refurbishments.

1 - Existing wall

2 - Breather membrane

3 - PR or Rockwool insulation

4 - Thermal break

5 - Air gap

6 - Aluminium vertical track

7 - Aluminium adjustable c.eat to soil cladding zone

8 - Rainscreen panel

Rainscreens create a completely flat surface, and provide a screen behind which the structural wall is protected from wind, rain and solar damage. Support Systems ■ The rainscreen support system comprises a range of adjustable wall brackets, which accommodates the external panel, insulation and air gap. Bracket designs allow for a hook on or direct fix rainscreen system, when necessary, it is possible to remove the panels individually.

Alternative joining system (hook on panel)

Aluminium Panels ■ Rainscreen panels are usually made from 2mm or 3mm aluminium. Computer aided design and manufacture ensures dimensional accuracy and flatness. Large panels have internal stiffeners to comply with design wind loads and panel deflection parameters. ACM ■ 4mm aluminium composite material gives the ultimate in panel flatness. The material is light, crisp tight folds and modular shadow joints with excellent acoustic performance. Zinc Rainscreen Systems ■ Titanium zinc is a blue/grey prepatanated finish, coated in a factory process and has a major benefit of being virtually maintenance free. No cleaning maintenance is required and if scratched the surface will self heal, the product has excellent colour consistency.

The air gap or cavity between the structural wall and outer rainscreen panel results in equalisation of pressures internally and externally preventing the drive of airborne moisture across the cavity and protecting the structure. Rainscreen panels are ideally suited to both new build projects and refurbishments fixed to existing facades.

Rainscreen Finish ■ A wide selection of coatings is available to create an aesthetic finish and ensure long term performance of the rainscreen system. Polyester powder coating, a post paint process to BS6469 is widely used, offering a wide range of colours and gloss levels. Stainless steel in a brushed finish, anodised aluminium to BS1615 and pre coated PVdF are further alternatives.

Rainscreens create a completely flat surface, and provide a screen behind which the structural wall is protected from wind, rain and solar damage.

CASE STUDY Aviation House - Holborn, London

Consistency of manufacturing is achieved through state of the art computerised manufacturing equipment and processes. With 20 years experience, Fabricolor is pro active in offering advice in situations where we feel that the customer’s specification will lead to potential problems on site.

There were two types of panel construction involving a number of challenging features:

Fabricolor Louvres are manufactured from high quality extruded and profiled aluminium, available in a range of louvre blade profiles and pitches. Louvres can be supplied as factory assembled modules, in kit form for site assembly to give continuous lines, and in cassette format to interlock with composite wall cladding systems.

Anodised aluminium front skin

Welded stop ends with no weld penetration to the front face, or linishing after welding

Anodised aluminium rainscreen with studs, stud welded to the rear of the panel

Solar Shading provides an aesthetic design solution to the practical problem of protecting a building against solar heating and glare.

Dimensional accuracy for large rainscreen panels 1600mm x 4000mm

Insulated Panels

A range of blade designs, Standard and Smooth Flow to allow flexibility in length span and shading depth in order to provide the required solution. ■

Insulated panels are often designed around mullions and transoms for curtain walling. They provide an insulated infill to areas where glazing is not required. The panels consist of an external skin, usually aluminium, an insulated core which can be polyurethane, polyisocyanurate and mineral wool, the thickness of the core to suit the required U-value, and a liner sheet. These components are bonded together using appropriate adhesive and a heated or vacuum press.

The table below shows the different thickness of the most common insulation with typical K-values required to meet these requirements.

SOLAR SHADING

GUTTERS AND RAINWATER GOODS

The roof drainage system is an important aspect of the overall roof design. It is important to calculate the correct capacity of a valley gutter due to it being inside the building line and is effectively part of the roof. Any overflow or leaks into the building would be unacceptable. Fabricolor produce a full range of valley and eaves gutters produced from aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel, before and after manufacture and insulated membrane gutters. ■

SMOKE VENTS AND ACCESS HATCHES

Fabricolor offers a range of Smoke Vent and Access Hatch systems which are engineered by computer selection to determine the effect of the development of fire and the passage of smoke on the configuration of the building. This is essential in order to provide the most appropriate solution to meet individual project requirements. Anodised aluminium restricts the ability to linish the welds as unlike polyester powder coating, anodising does not cover the dressed area, it highlights it. Fabricolor solved this by using an alternative welding technique that did not cause unsightly penetration to the front face. Aluminium studs were applied to the aluminium sheet without causing marking to the front face. Dimensional accuracy was achieved on Fabricolor’s Trumpf 500 CNC punch press that has the capability to punch wide sheets to tight tolerances. Modern CNC machinery and technical excellence ensured that all quality requirements were achieved.

ARCHITECTURAL FABRICATIONS

Architectural Fabrications include a wide range of architectural products that complete the building envelope. These products will require the same technical excellence as the other products listed here. Fabricolor has the experience and expertise to offer the following bespoke products: Column Casings; Select Eaves System; Copings and Capping; Soakers; Curved Fascias; Complex Fabrications.
