Solar Shading or Brise Soleil provide an aesthetic design solution to the practical problem of protecting a building against solar heating and glare, whist maintaining desirable daylight. Protection against solar heating and glare is becoming a more important element in building control regulations. Research shows that a building incorporating Solar Shading and natural ventilation will typically enjoy 10% less energy costs compared to a building without Solar Shading and the use of air conditioning. Apart from the low capital costs, Solar Shading has negligible ongoing maintenance costs. Designs are sufficiently flexible to be adapted to suit the varied requirements of modern architecture.

Fabricolor uses a combination of steel and aluminium support bracketry to achieve a best fix solution. The mullions are manufactured from extruded aluminium or pressed and punched from aluminium sheet. Solar Shading blades are manufactured from either extruding aluminium, this method produces long continuous lengths that are rigid and have secret fixing as part of the design, or can be press-formed from a wide variety of sheet materials. Components can have a wide range of coatings including either anodised or polyester powder coated, which carry the manufacturers Syntha Pulvin or Dupont paint warranty. Continuous Solar Shading is usually site assembled and is supplied ready to fix. Solar Shading blades are clipped to support arms via pre-located clips, however we can develop systems utilising factory assembled modules if preferred.


Standard and Smoothflow Solar Shading

An optional feature facia-pelmet fitted to the external edge of the louvred panel. A range of standard pelmets are available. Supplied complete with rivets for site fixing to mullions. Bespoke details available on request.

Site assembled, extruded aluminium, continuous or modular louvred solar shading system. A full range of complementary high performance architectural inlet/extract louvre systems are available from Fabricolor.

BK2 - Curtain Walling Bracket 3mm thick aluminium with stainless steel pin to connect to mullion and bracing arms as applicable. Structural fixings to suit application.

Facia - Pelmet BK3 - Cantilever Bracket 2mm thick galvanized steel with stainless steel pin to connect to mullion and structural bracing arms as applicable. Structural fixings to suit application.

Aero X Small Profile Aerofoil Solar Shading

Options available include: ■ Mill finish aluminium ■ Polyester powder coating Interpon D/Syntha Pulvin+ ■ PVF2 – High performance coating system ■ Anodising – AA25 – Natural/Bronze/Black/Coloured

Fabricolor offer a range of fixed or operable solar shading systems utilising aerofoil blades manufactured from extruded aluminium. Systems are supplied to site in sub-assembled format for fixing directly to the supporting structure. The supporting structure is normally part of the building structure.

A comprehensive range of colours and specials are available to order.

Operable Aerofoil Systems Operable solar shade systems are supplied with tailor made bracketry to suit individual installations. Driving mechanism options include 240V ac or 24V dc electrical actuators or mechanical winders. Control systems options include automatic electric control panels with solar tracking and thermal sensors with fully automated PLC control mechanisms as required. Bracing Arms Options:

Blade Profile Options Blades are manufactured to BS1471-6063T6 with a minimum thickness of 2mm. They have an externally smooth elliptical profile with internal features for the location of end plates. Load/Span Table – Horizontal/Vertical Blades A (mm)

Type 1 Standard End Plate. Profiled to the shape of the blade profile. 3mm thick aluminium fitted to the blade end using stainless steel fixings.

Type 4 Operating Link End Plate. Profiled to the shape of the blade profile. 3mm thick aluminium fitted to the blade end using stainless steel fixings. There is a prepunched plate extension to one end for linking to the operating mechanism.

Type 2 Square Boss End Plate. Profiled to the shape of the blade profile. 3mm thick aluminium fitted to the blade end using stainless steel fixings. A square section fixing boss projects from the middle of the plate.

Type 5 Tangential Fixing End Plate. Profiled to the shape of the blade profile. 3mm thick aluminium fitted to the blade end using stainless steel fixings. A pre-punched plate extension to one side allows lateral fixing of the blades to the structure.

Type 3 Pivot Boss End Plate. Profiled to the shape of the blade profile. 3mm thick aluminium fitted to the blade end using stainless steel fixings. A circular section fixing boss projects from the middle of the plate.

Type 6 Lateral Fixing Cleat. Extruded aluminium angle cleat pre-punched to fit to the standard blade end plate on site. The cleat is fixed to the building structure using suitable fixings as required.

Aero P Large Profile Aerofoil Solar Shading

Type 1 Standard End Plate. Profiled from 8mm thick aluminium plate or made from precision formed cast aluminium.

Fabricolor offer a range of fixed or operable solar shading systems utilising aerofoil blades manufactured from aluminium or steel. Systems are supplied to site in sub-assembled format for fixing directly to the supporting structure. The supporting structure is normally part of the building structure

Blades over 3m long will be fitted with two sheet metal skins, neatly joined. The skins are precision formed and then mechanically riveted together and to the skeleton frame to form the blade. Blade Tip Options 300 and 450 – ‘sharp’ leading edges. 585 – 20mm radius leading edges. Finishes

Blade Profile Options The blades are manufactured from aluminium with a minimum thickness of 1.5mm and steel with a minimum thickness of 0.7mm. The ‘585’ profile blade is fitted with an internal extruded aluminium former framework to ensure complete structural rigidity. The blade has an externally smooth elliptical profile, and has internal features for the location of end plates or operating plates.

Options available include: ■ Anodised aluminium – AA25 – Natural/Bronze/ Gold/Coloured ■ Polyester powder coating Interpon D/Syntha Pulvin+ ■ Pre or post coated PVF2 – High performance coating ■ Plastisol/HP200 pre-coated steel ■ Mill finish aluminium A comprehensive range of colours and specials are available to order.

Type 2 Special Mount. Cup Housing Bracket comprising a cylindrical boss welded to the cheek of the Standard End Plate and a ‘cup’ housing bracket which is bolted to the building structure.

Type 3 Lateral Fixing Cleat. Galvanised R. S. angle cleat pre-punched to fit to the standard blade end plate on site. The cleat is fixed to the building structure using suitable fixings as required.

The contractor could not find a company who could offer the complete package of sourcing and fitting the terracotta tile solar shade. Fabricolor was speaking to the architect with regard to louvres on the same project and offered a solution to this solar shading problem.

GUTTERS AND RAINWATER GOODS

The roof drainage system is an important aspect of the overall roof design. It is important to calculate the correct capacity of a valley gutter due to it being inside the building line and is effectively part of the roof. Any overflow or leaks into the building would be unacceptable. Fabricolor produce a full range of valley and eaves gutters produced from aluminium, stainless steel, galvanised steel, before and after manufacture and insulated membrane gutters.

The Fabricolor design involved a 300mm deep aluminium aerofoil, angled to follow the curve of the building and coated in a terracotta colour to reflect the original architectural concept. Purpose made support arms were designed to suit existing steelwork. The solar shade was designed to be modular and to be lifted into position with minimum effort. Prototypes of the design were presented to the architect for approval. The overall benefits to the architect and contractor from Fabricolor involvement were:

Fabricolor Louvres are manufactured from high quality extruded and profiled aluminium, available in a range of louvre blade profiles and pitches. Louvres can be supplied as factory assembled modules, in kit form for site assembly to give continuous lines, and in cassette format to interlock with composite wall cladding systems.

The final outcome was an aesthetically pleasing design solution reflecting the architects original requirement, whilst offering practical shading to the balconies.

METAL FACADES

Rainscreen panels and insulated panels enable the designer to provide a flat surface to the outer skin of a building. A wide range of materials and finishes are available to create crisp lines and an aesthetic appearance. Systems are available to suit new build projects and refurbishments fixed to existing facades. Insulated or composite panels designed around a curtain walling system provide infill when glazing is not required. ■

SMOKE VENTS AND ACCESS HATCHES

Fabricolor offers a range of Smoke Vent and Access Hatch systems which are engineered by computer selection to determine the effect of the development of fire and the passage of smoke on the configuration of the building. This is essential in order to provide the most appropriate solution to meet individual project requirements. ■
