ISTANBUL, Turkey — Upholstery fabric makers Istanbul Mensucat (Ismen) have announced that due to Istanbul’s lingering water scarcity issues, the company will be moving its factory operations from Istanbul to Çorlu and will have to replace its current production staff with a new workforce of 400 employees.
“[Ismen] will move out of here completely and will open up a showroom somewhere else,” said Ali Orhan of the upholstery fabrics division. “The showroom for retailers will be in Istanbul, and the mill will be in Çorlu.” There, Orhan said Ismen will have one of the most modern facilities with 75,000 square meters of open area
Brillant Home Introduces Domestic Ready-made Labels ‘Home Exclusive’ and ‘Baby Exclusive’ India Is Top Pick For Accessories by Kelley Granger ISTANBUL, Turkey — The Baydemirs behind the Brillant Home chain have created two new labels, Home Exclusive and Baby Exclusive, which will be shown at this year’s Evteks and also featured in the company’s stores. In August of 2007, Nilgün Baydemir had asked her sis-
ter, Nurgül, to partner with her on a project that would fulfill a specific need — ready-made collections that have a domestic focus. “I made this a decorationbased brand,” Baydemir said. “People can buy anything they need for this.” Home Exclusive features complementary products to help shoppers create stylish rooms, including items such as tables, lamps, pillows, bedding, mirrors and more. demir travels the world sourcing accessories for the line, which are then signed exclusively to the label. She said India has been one of the best product suppliers for Home Exclusive. “India is getting better and better,” Baydemir said. “They’re creating very different things at good prices — for example, handmade beaded pillows. In Turkey, handmade items are very expensive.” Baydemir, who has a oneyear-old daughter, was also inspired to create Baby Exclusive, a boutique line of baby products that includes cribs that can be finished in pure sateen or Swarovski crystals according to a customer’s requests. The line has a small factory with a team of 10 designers and product makers. Baydemir is hoping to (Continued on page 14)

Ismen is currently located along a row of other textile producers, namely industry heavyweight Aydin. The effects of a water shortage could be distressing to the entire area, curbing production and diminishing jobs if factories move to new loca(Continued on page 12)
Dicitex Décor Grows 30 Percent Curtain, Drapery and Upholstery Divisions Expand by S. Vishwanath MUMBAI, India — Dicitex Décor has reported a steady yearly growth of 30 percent for its curtain, drapery and upholstery divisions and is positioning itself to maintain its stance among the world’s top textile mills as the domestic market booms. “Dicitex Décor is a young company and we have chosen to invest in technology and continuously plough profits back into business, [which] has made us the third largest weaving mill in the world,” said Sanjay Arora, the managing director of the drapery division. “The speed with which Dicitex Décor and the drapery division have grown is extremely satisfying. We have consistently grown without a pause and the curtain and
drapery division, as well as upholstery, has been constantly growing over 30 percent year on year.” Perhaps such growth is due to the continually evolving products that Dicitex provides to customers — and the company said that this year’s Evteks will be a major medium for presenting the latest offerings.
Sanjay Arora, managing director of the drapery division
“Evteks 2008 is an important forum for us and this year’s collections consist of new articles like 20 new organza patterns, plains, semi-transparent sheers, Fil Coupe sheers, sheers with leno effect, velvet applique laser cut designs and a few others,” Arora said. The company’s drapery division started with two embroidery machines in 2001 and now has 129 with a (Continued on page 13)

A New Vision for Evteks
T
he previous EVTEKS was amazing in many ways. The synergy of Istanbul Trade Fairs (ITF) and its supporters, Turkish Home Textiles Industrialists’ Association (TETSD) and Home Textiles Industrialists’ Association (EVSIAD) leveraged EVTEKS. We refocused ourselves around the sector and the visitors. We have a firm belief that our exhibitors are unsurpassed in their talent and in the quality of products they exhibit in EVTEKS. We have accomplished a broad spectrum for success in the fairs to come. Our vision is to democratize fashion and design in home textiles and accessories to the world, and to become the first choice for trade connections in home textiles and accessories. Consistent with this vision and mission, we have developed a set of performance objectives that will guide us for the years to come. There are many new activities in EVTEKS 2008 including the introduction of the trend area and its presentation by Baris Can Erol Gunnar Frank in cooperation with Uludag Exporters Association (UIB), a matchmaking program between Turkish textiles companies and foreign buyers, seminars by well known designers like Karim Rashid, Ornella Bignami, Catherine Rouget, Defne Koz, Özlem Yalim, Ceren Erten, Canan Sönmez Canik, Serdar Gülgün, Cenk Mommarje and Fulvio Alvisi, president of Italian Textile Design. These activities will bring together the most important textile designers and manufacturers at Evteks 2008 where the latest trends and fashions will be presented. We believe EVTEKS 2008 will maintain its reputation as an exciting and satisfying fair for both the exhibitors and the visitors.

A Glimpse at the Evteks 2008 Fair Baris Can Erol, who joined CNR in 2005 as a finance director, became the deputy managing director last May at an exciting time for Evteks. With association mergers, new concepts and construction on four new convention halls at the expo center, Erol explained to Sipco Publications exactly what to expect in the coming years. What’s exciting at Evteks this year? This year we have a new concept — the trend area. We’re working on it with the Exporter’s Trade Association. We’ll be bringing in international designers and people who will give speeches and seminars during the show. We’ve dedicated about 600 to 700 square meters to presenting new trends in home textiles. Also, though the profile of our exhibitors is similar to last year, we’re going to try to separate the sectors like curtains, bathrooms and upholstery to make a clear cut between exhibitors in the halls.
The Home Textiles Industrialist’s Association and the Home Textiles Businessmen’s Association merged in February. What effect will this have? Basically, they were separated as producers and resellers. This will now create synergy for the sector since they will act as a single body. When they sit in front of government officials, international associations and organizations, they’ll be overcoming their past conflicts and coming together. As the fruits of our relationship with them, they’ll be subsidizing visi-
tors from Europe and the Americas.
What do you plan for the future of Evteks? Evteks will continue being our biggest show. It’s the biggest CNR has here, so we give it the most attention. With the associations merging, there’s a synergy. The trend area is a product of this. For the future, the construction project we’re trying to finalize will help us try to grow the show even more with the new halls. Four new halls are expected to open in 2009. That will provide us with extra space that can grow the show by almost EN 20 percent.

Istanbul’s Water Woes Spur Ismen’s Factory Move to Çorlu tions. Aydin did not return requests for comment. The possibility of a water deficiency has come to the forefront in Istanbul during recent years. The city has grown exponentially since the 1960s — when its population totaled 2 million people — to a current peak of 12 million people that are straining the city’s resources. But climate change, minimal rainfall, and unregulated irrigation pose
threats to the water supply as much as the burgeoning population. In March of 2008, Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbafl welcomed officials from more than 35 countries during a two-day conference on solving water issues. Istanbul is also slated to host the fifth World Water Forum in March 2009, an event which aims to garner global collaboration on eradicating water woes.
Turkey’s General Directorate of State Hydraulic Works (DSI), the executive state agency responsible for overall water resources planning, management, execution and operation, has a number of projects in development to address water issues, including the Melen River Project that was initiated in October, 2007 and is expected to conclude this November. If successful, the agency anticipates the project

will bring 268 million cubic meters of water to Istanbul. Onder Kiremitci, a spokesperson for the World Water Forum, said that he doesn’t agree that there is enough of a water shortage in Istanbul to prompt Ismen’s move. Orhan and Fatih Altunyurt, the company’s foreign commerce administrator, did acknowledge other purposes and benefits behind Ismen’s move. Altunyurt said the company will also benefit from cheaper labor costs in Çorlu, where the current staff will be replaced by 400 new hires. Only Ismen’s administration will move to the new mill during the transfer, which is expected to occur in late summer or early fall. Orhan also said that Ismen is looking forward to increasing its space. “The priority is to have continuous production and to deliver on time,” he said. “In the current premises, we have problems with this because of the space.” Orhan, who handles Russia, one of Ismen’s largest markets, said that customers are expecting a higher level of quality that equates in less production. “In order to keep up, we need more machinery,” Orhan said. Ismen currently has 90 machines at the Istanbul location, and added 10 new machines for the Çorlu facility. Orhan said customers are also asking for more modern styles, including geometrical and contrasting designs. Ismen’s main product is chenille, and Altunyurt said customers can expect to see new collections of a chenille and velvet combination and more minimalized designs. EN

Dicitex Décor Reports Growth in Upholstery, Drapery Sectors huge mill and all necessary infrastructure in place. A special weaving facility produces sheer patterns and semi-transparent fabrics like 90 wide width looms, 20 jacquards and 70 dobby looms, 129 multi-head embroidery machines and 30 Schiffli machines. The mill makes more than 40,000 meters of embroidered fabrics daily and has recently added new laser appliqué cut machines, special embroidery machines for attachments like sequins, crystals, beads and thicker yarns and a complete set up for made-ups. “We had an empty land in the year 1999 and we installed two multi-head spindles and now in 2008, the factory houses 127 machines with 4,374 heads,” B.M. Arora, Dicitex Décor founder and chairman, said. “Tajima, a leading embroidery machine manufacturing company in Japan, has said that we are the largest customer in the world for their machines.” In spite of being one of the largest global mills, Dicitex
were spent to understand the basics, gain manufacturing knowledge and learn design and styling aspects that suit Western consumers who are located thousands of miles away. “Passion to perform is challenging and we are looking at additional geographic spread that we have not touched so far,” said Ajay Arora. “Various product segments, such as prints, are new for us but potential exists.

Increasing the customer base and clear product segmentation that adds higher value and is technically superior will forward our growth further.”
Dicitex Decor already employs more than 3,000 people and is preparing to meet the exponential growth the domestic market offers. “[With] a large Indian

Décor continues to move toward future growth prospects. “The momentum belongs to India and the mindset towards us is more overflowingly positive than ever before,” said Ajay Arora, managing director of the upholstery division. For Dicitex Décor, opportunities exist and are still abundant in the global marketplace. But growing constantly by 30 to 35 percent a year is definitely a challenge, he admitted. The growth in its upholstery division is equally impressive. In 1999 with only six looms, two years

begin exporting these labels sometime next year. Brillant has also been successfully producing the Brillant Contract Hotel Collection, which it began two years ago. Baydemir said that large hotels, like a 700room-hotel the company just outfitted with bedding, are choosing the Brillant brand because it’s reliable. “They are preferring us because we’re a big factory and we can deliver,” she said.

“They believe in us. They already know Brillant as a producer because we’re already a well-known brand.” The Brillant Contract Hotel Collection offers coordinated fabrics, sheers, velvets, polyester, linen and blackouts in Europe and America. “We can reach the American standards through our finishing treatments for flame retardancy,” Baydemir said. “In Europe, they
ask us for Trevira.” This year, Baydemir said the Brillant Contract Hotel Collection produced sample books with new designers and colors for hotel trends. She said the hotel industry is presently preferring natural tones. The company is also continuing to focus on franchising the Brillant Home shops. Brillant Home currently has 60 shops within Turkey,
three in Iran, two in Syria and one in Africa. “We aim to give our customers anything they desire for their home, from draperies, curtains, bed linens, wall coverings, towels, blankets, tablecloths and design consulting,” she said. According to Baydemir, the company is planning to open more shops in Europe in the future, while their products are already popular in German areas where

there is a Turkish and immigrant population. “In Turkey, Iran and Syria we give importance to our taste,” Baydemir said. “We make an investment in our home.” She said that Brillant would look toward opening shops in the United States if circumstances were right. “If we find a customer in the U.S. we will be happy to open a Brillant Home shop,” Baydemir said. She said the company would also be pleased to extend its twoyear-old domestic cutting business to the U.S., but also under the proper conditions. “For exports, we’re always looking for large quantities,” Baydemir said. “We’d need a distributor who can do it, so we can deliver abroad.” The company is already doing this in Russia, where a warehouse keeps its products in stock.

Beekalene Increases Jacquard Weaving, Acquires New Looms by S. Vishwanath MUMBAI, India — Beekalene Fabrics Limited of India is increasing its jacquard weaving in response to increased sales to customers overseas as well as in the domestic market. “We are a design-orientated company and in a short span of four years our buyers have appreciated and differentiated us from others,” said Kabir Sehgal, director. “We offer almost monopolistic designs and new fresh colors and we
have increased responsibilities to satisfy our demanding customers who want new products almost every fortnight.” The company is on a major restructuring exercise to improve and practice the most effective manufacturing systems to further catalyze its creative line of collections. After a 30 percent growth last year in upholstery and drapery, the company is also adding 12 Vamatex looms to its collection. Very popular in naturals like cotton and linen, sales in

these segments have doubled in the last 18 months. The minimum order per batch has been reduced from 300 to 200 meters for a single order and business is
looking more optimistic than in the past. According to Beekalene’s reading of the trends in the market, naturals and blends that are created with new weaves and textures in new colors provide designers with more innovative opportunities than run-of-the-mill products. At Beekalene, design elements are important and they have adopted textures from the apparel division. Sehgal said the uniqueness of Beekalene’s
residential fabric collection stands out and translates to orders from customers. For Evteks, Beeklene plans on bright colors and blends to stand out. “During Evteks 2008, we are betting on metallic tints with fresh vibrant new color themes,” said Sehgal. “Our weave effects include a blend of shine cum dullness in linen line as well as in other blended fibers.” Beekalene is a textile company that is more than three decades old but is almost a rookie in furnishing manufacturing and exporting. Exposure in apparel textiles encouraged Beekalene to enter into furnishings and they have been exporting to 20 countries. EN
Esa Withdraws from Textile Trade Industry by Kelley Granger ISTANBUL, Turkey — Esa Tekstil has announced that it will be closing its factory and withdrawing from the textile industry. The announcement came after months of uncertainty and after separation from sister company Hisar. Umit Altiner, a former Esa employee who left the company for a position as export manager at Isik Kadife, said that he left at the end of last year because the company’s management was no longer creating marketable collections. “My clients, [with which] I had [such] long relations, were complaining of not receiving new designs and qualities from me, which is a must in our industry,” said Altiner, who had predicted that the company would either close or become a smallscale company and move capital to another sector. Esa did not wish to comment on the situation during a recent visit to the facility. Esa had been a manufacturer of upholstery fabric in Istanbul, where the company operated as an integrated weaving, dyeing and finishing factory which began in 1973. EN

Bezmez Introduces Bedding Lines Decorative Fabric and Curtains Maker Takes Boutique Approach by Kelley Granger BURSA, Turkey — Bezmez’ decision to showcase fabrics in a bedroom setting at last year’s Evteks unexpectedly spawned the company’s latest line of boutique bed coverings, which is being shown at this year’s Evteks fair. “Last year when we prepared our stand we thought, ‘Let’s put a bed there with our fabric and our curtains to give a warm feeling,’” said Levent N. Bezmez, owner of the decorative fabrics and curtains company. “The customers liked it and gave us a little pressure to start the line.” Bezmez said that the collection will be a fancy looking line that focuses on quality of production rather than quantity. “The capacity is not very high so they’ll be boutiquetype coverings using beads and hand embroidery in materials like polyester, silk and velvet,” he said. “For these, we’re using all kinds of materials, not just what we produce.” The new collection corresponds the color and design of Bezmez window treatments with new bed coverings to give a complete look to rooms. Although Germany holds 80 percent of Bezmez’ exports, Bezmez predicted that the bedding collection would not be popular with Europeans. “It’s not very European,” he said. “Our first territory is domestic, then the Kazakhstan people were quite interested. We’ll go to Poland where there’s another fair and see what they think. We don’t expect it to be very popular in Europe. But if we can attend Decosit we’ll still display there since it’s now part of our production.” Besides Germany, Bezmez’ other major markets include Austria, Greece, Belgium, Jordan, Egypt, Ukraine, Kazakhstan and Lebanon, but the company would like to increase sales of its other products to Spain, Switzerland, Italy and Portugal. Bezmez said that the quality of his company’s work should speak for itself against competition.
EVTEKS NEWS 2008
Bezmez has three designers and the company makes its own collections, sometimes buying patterns from design studios or designers they visit at various fairs. The company recently had an issue with imitation of a product Bezmez designed himself. The company is suing a wholesaler that copied the most locally popular voile design which happens to be the only pattern Bezmez ever personally designed. Bezmez was founded in Bursa in 1996 in a 10,000-
square-meter factory with 10 employees. It currently employs 80 people and is managed by Bezmez and his wife, who does research and development for the company. Bezmez estimated the company produces an average of 2.6 million square meters of material per year. EN Bezmez is constructing a new showroom to feature bedding; inset: Owner Levent N. Bezmez

Öz-Is Introduces New Trevira CS Line SIPCO NEWS NETWORK ISTANBUL, Turkey — Öz-Is is introducing a new line of string curtains using Trevira CS and has started exporting products to the Far East, Europe and North Africa. The company debuted its string curtains at last year’s Evteks, and began selling them in July. Özer Özbarut, vice president, said that the curtains are generally sold to wholesalers and high-level retailers. He said the characteristics of the curtains are impossible to make at a low to medium quality production level. “We aim to be a boutique producer,” Özbarut said. “We don’t aim to sell so many thousands of curtains in a month. It’s not easy to produce at the lower or middle level.” Aside from the fabric and leather qualities that the string curtains are available in, they will also be sold in a phosphorous quality, which illuminates light green after it absorbs light. Özbarut expects that these glow-in-the-dark curtains will be popular in hospitality venues to illuminate exits in the event of earthquakes, fires or loss of electricity. Öz-Is also plans to show new trimming col-

lections at this year’s Evteks that use Swarovski crystals as well as metallic products that are currently popular. Özbarut also said that Evteks visitors should expect a lot of surprises from his company at this year’s fair. “For Evteks we have new ideas, materials and first-time-in-the-world concepts,” he said. “We have so many surprises.” EN
New Ja-ge Plant Integrates Production Above: General Manager Jale Engin Vardar; Middle: Ja-ge’s Berge damask design; Below: Ja-ge’s Mese design is reversible
by Kelley Granger BURSA, Turkey — After seven years of producing textiles, Ja-ge General Manager Jale Engin Vardar said the company is in a good position in the market and looking to vertically integrate production in a new 6,000-squaremeter facility. “We want to be a complete vertical company having dyeing and finishing,” Vardar said. “We’ll need to hire approximately 30 people to work in the new plant.” The move to create inhouse dyeing and finishing procedures follows the standard for quality that Ja-ge has already set for yarn production. Vardar said that producing the yarns themselves helps to ensure integrity in the product. The new production house will be located behind the current Ja-ge quarters in Bursa, and is anticipated to be delivered in May. Ja-ge was formed in 2001 after Vardar’s father, Saban Engin, had already been working in yarn production for six years. Engin had created a colored cotton yarn

that he developed into upholstery products after a Polish furnishings wholesaler convinced him it would be successful. Vardar said this yarn was a turnkey for her father in the industry, who also went on to make a colored cotton polyester. According to Vardar, Ja-ge exports increased by 20 percent between 2006 and 2007, and the company currently sells to approximately 25 countries. Ja-ge’s main markets are Poland, Greece, Russia, Iran and North Africa. For the 2008 Evteks, Vardar said fair-goers should be prepared for an introduction from her father which she said will be something totally new to the market. The company has also decided that the market is ready for its “tinsel” products, and has decided to show a line of metallic fabrics. Vardar said the metallics, as well as velvets and damask patterns, are the current trends in the home textiles industry. EN

Özlem Arslan Joins Marsteks, Company Diversifies Designs Youthful Team Shifts Markets And Increases Company’s Export Ranking by 40 Steps by Kelley Granger BURSA, Turkey — Marsteks’ export manager, Ahmet Melih Arslan, and his sales executive wife, Özlem Arslan, are modest about the upholstery and curtain company’s recent success, but the company’s sales have constituted significant growth and increasing prestige in the industry. “We work as a team here,” said Özlem Arslan, who joined the company just nine months ago after her marriage to Mr. Arslan. “We don’t want to take all the credit.” The numbers since the couple started speak for themselves. Mr. Arslan, who
has been with the company for just two years, said that the Turkish Export Department’s annual list of top exporters saw Marsteks rank 40 positions higher in 2007 than in 2006. The company has also seen a growth of approximately 20 percent during the same timeframe. For 2008, he said the goal is to top that with a 30 percent increase. The Arslans believe the integral shift came in a repositioning of export markets. “We’ve changed our product style,” said Mr. Arslan. “In previous years we were producing for the Russian market, now it’s more for the European market. The tastes have changed.”
Ahmet Melih Arslan, export manager; Özlem Arslan, sales executive
Mr. Arslan said that prior to the change, Marsteks’ color choices were static, but now they’re updating at least every six months and have the support of some European designers. “This is what we want, Europe always directs us to fashion,” Mr. Arslan said. “Our European requirements are our targets. If you can sell to Europe, you can sell to a lot of countries in the world.”
Mr. Arslan credits his wife with the vibrant new colors incorporated in the product lines. “Our colors were really a disaster,” he said. “But after Özlem started, she’s been looking to India for inspiration and is very sensitive for details.” Mrs. Arslan, who studied textile engineering and came to Marsteks after working as a development merchandiser for the U.K. retail clothing chain Next, said she used her experience to change the colors according to a U.K. taste, and it worked. “We started to get orders and with the feedback we started to make more,” she said. Since she started, Marteks has picked up six or seven new U.K. customers. Mr. Arslan said his wife’s influence will be clearly seen at
Marsteks’ Evteks booth, where visitors will immediately notice the stand because it will be totally covered in colorful fabric. Mrs. Arslan promised interesting combinations of colors at the fair, like bright yellow and bright green, as well as shiny and metallic fabrics. Marsteks is a family-based upholstery and curtain maker with markets in Mexico, Japan, South Africa and Columbia. The company recently added Lurex yarn to its line, new collections with lace details and increased drapery lines. Both Arslans have goals to achieve higher levels of export, service and quality. “We want to be one of the most special producers by increasing quality,” Mr. Arslan said. EN
Broderi Narin Adds Trevira Collection, Cut Length Sales Grow by Kelley Granger ISTANBUL, Turkey — Broderi Narin, a producer of drapery fabric primarily for residential markets, is looking to head into the contract arena with a new Trevira CS collection as the company’s yearold cut length service boosts sales numbers. Board member Cengiz Narin said that the company has done market research to create objectives and calculations before deciding to debut a flame retardant collection, which resembles a new taffeta collection and shares designs and colors with previously existing products. “Even though we’re aware of it, it’s an enormous cost,” said Narin. “In the States, as much as we’ve come across, our customers were not interested in Trevira because it was making products more

expensive. It’s an expensive yarn, but it is the most reliable in the world, so we are not prepared to use a second brand.” Narin said that in the U.S., customers typically request cheaper FR coated materials. However, Broderi Narin is committed to quality. “We are not cheap looking, cheap to touch or cheap as a product, but we are fast and flexible in developing,” he said. “We are using so many different yarns from so

many countries in the world. It’s a mosaic, and being in Turkey we’re in the middle of the world.” Last year, Broderi Narin introduced an international cut length service which allowed the company to accommodate smaller orders. Narin estimated that the new service helped to increase sales by 20 percent. “Sales are coming more than expected, in small quantities but steadily,” he said. “We didn’t expect so
much interest.” Broderi Narin’s minimalistic embroidery and modern designs are most popular in Japan and Scandinavia, where Narin said countries prefer a simplistic style. He also said that business is growing in the U.S. Broderi Narin produces mainly home textiles, including curtains, sheers, draperies, plain, striped, patterned, solids and tablecloths. Narin said the company is best known for
natural and rustic types of sheers, which the company has developed in a line that combines materials like linen and silk with polyester. In addition to the new multicolored taffeta line that the company unveiled in August, Broderi Narin also introduced heavier draperies in February. This year, Evteks visitors can expect to see shiny and matte combinations, which Narin said is the current fashion. EN
Handloom Mark to Distinguish Indian Textiles by S. Vishwanath NEW DELHI, India — The Ministry of Textiles in India has introduced the Handloom Mark, which will provide a collective identity to handloom products and can be used not only for popularizing hand-woven products but can also serve as a guarantee for the buyer that the product being purchased is genuinely hand-woven. The mark will provide a distinctive name in identifying the product or a manufacturer. The Handloom Mark label will be a hallmark of powerful creative work that defines the product with clarity, distinguishing it from competition and connecting it with customers. tute a rich cultural heritage and as an economic activity, the sector generates employment to 6.5 million workers and weaves more than 6,000 million meters annually. “Handloom has an edge over machine woven fabric because it can be woven in small batches more creatively with more appealing variations in design and translates to buyer’s desires,” said B. K. Sinha, the development commissioner (handlooms) of
the Indian Ministry of Textiles. However, the handloom sector faces many challenges with technological developments and handloom products are increasingly replicated on power looms at a much lower cost. While the government's endeavor is to create conditions for the harmonious growth of the entire textile industry, at the same time it would also like to ensure that there are well-defined areas for handlooms, which is not unduly encroached by the power looms and mills. “The current global concern of ecological concerns has a ready answer by choosing Indian handloom furnishings and made-ups as power is not used to produce these fabrics,” he added. Istanbul and Büyükada:
Cultural Epicenter and Idyllic Island ISTANBUL, Turkey — Turkey may be known in the textile industry as one of the world’s leading producers, but to the rest of the world it’s still the land of East meets West. It’s been an intoxicating history of sultans, harems, crusaders and civilizations gone by. Today, it’s an interesting combination of traditionalism and modernism — an up-and-coming city that is flourishing amid gorgeous historical mosques, palaces and bazaar. Just 12 miles away, the island of Büyükada is a respite from the traffic of the city and a vacation home for many families in Istanbul, offering interesting island architecture and horse-drawn carriage rides through its tree-lined streets. — KG
