DESIGN Our proposal for the Barilla Moduli Pavilion aims to provide both the best fit possible for anticipated programmatic needs, and to create a flexible openended space adaptable to unknown needs that might arise in the future.
3
DESIGN Architecture is more than just a building and the latest trends in technology. It is even more than a provision of shelter and the necessary comforts of the best of modern cultural facilities. It can be a means both to capture the spirit and innovation of the moment and to evoke history and tradition. It is an emblematic presence in the landscape and a personal experience through daily interaction.

CONSTRUCTION The project will be constructed with a maximum of three different building parts: (A) a typical light concrete panel of 15m x 10m, (B) a faรงade left panel of 15m x 5m, and (C) a faรงade right panel of 15m x 5m. These triangular elements will be cast in concrete horizontally on the floor slab of the project and then, through a process known as tilt-up construction, lifted up into position by a crane to realize the final form of the building.

IMPRESSION The Barilla Moduli Pavilion will be a striking architectural form seen from the highway and encountered upon the entrance to the factory in Parma. It will make an impression on the imagination, calling to mind the modern and egalitarian values that Barilla has advocated since 1877.

CONCEPT The regularity of the structure is marked by modular omissions that create pools of light in the interior. Conversely, spaces are architecturally defined by way of excavation rather than construction, achieving a specificity of configuration that anticipated uses might require such as for exhibitions, classes, and performances. The method of excavation provides further economies of construction by virtue of the fact that the walls will only require a finish on one interior side and creates propitious conditions for the flow of light, air, and views through a building that will not obstruct the trajectories of these natural elements.

CONCEPT Since the program is excavated below, the ground level space is open and retains its continuity with the landscape. Around the building, a continuous glass façade will be open to the incoming light, approaching visitors and views of the surrounding fields and structures. The creation of difference by omission—without adding new types of elements to the structure—helps define a flexible, adaptable and eventful organization of space achieved with extremely economic means of construction. Thus, the Barilla Moduli Pavilion takes the appearance of a particular form of human ingenuity, a testament to intelligence through the usage of limited resources.

REPRESENTATION Seen from afar the Barilla Moduli Pavilion will be a delightful contrast to the factory and the context of Parma. More than iconicity, Moduli alludes to the strength and consistency of the food industry and the joy of producing pasta for all of Italy and around the world.
13
EXPERIENCE Within the building, the neutral field of relentless structure will contain exceptional moments that transform the space into episodic celebrations of architecture by the omission of one or more modules and excavation of the ground, creating places where people may come together.
14
COMMUNICATION We believe the Barilla Moduli Pavilion should provide an emblematic presence of the industry that made it possible. The mechanized capacity to produce the pasta that will nourish millions of people everywhere, with the wholesome care of traditionally home-made pasta, is nothing but a testament to human ingenuity and resourcefulness. The Barilla Moduli Pavilion celebrates that ingenuity by becoming the product itself of a system of modularity and industrialized serial form and, in this way, it celebrates Barilla with the same means that made Barilla a household name around the world.
