Angelo Mai is an independent space for arts born in 2004 after the occupation of an abandoned school in the center of Rome. Since then, 25 families and a group of artists started a fight for the right to have access to an adequate housing and an independent spaces for culture. Angelo Mai residents were violently evicted by police in 2006—remaining without a space for long time but continuing their cultural activities nomadically in the city. Angelo Mai re-opened in 2010 with the permission of the Tribunal of Rome in conjunction with the concession to renovate the dismissed municipal bowling club located inside Parco San Sebastiano— in the heart of the archeological Rome. The following project see the transformation of the existing building into a performing space. The new construction is designed to be used for diverse activities such as workshops, lectures, exhibitions, film screenings, concerts, and sometimes hospitality. It consists of a reinforced concrete slab and a steel structure built up on the ground in accordance to the prescriprions imposed by the Archeological Superintendency. A technical roof hosts a set of suspended devices, giving the stages the possibility to be configurated according to diverse activities. Built with public funds, and extended thanks to the generous contribution and support of donors and activists.

Territories A spectacular web of hammocks made by a single continuous white cloth interweaves the metal structures of the Angelo Mai theatre, filling the entire building. The physical and playful experience given by the dense hammock system makes the space relational and collective: each movement from an individual on a hammock becomes a vibration transmitted to the whole installation.
