Dear all, I’m Fabrizio, an italian boy always searching for something. I’m 24 years old and I just graduate in Architecture at the “Politecnico di Milano” , during these years, I have learned to look at the world with different eyes, more carefully, more trained: I began to see things that I had never seen before. I notice how us, the italians, are throwing away one of the most important historical heritages of humanity, but mostly how the interest of money has become more important than human relationship, it’s inconceivable! Studying architecture, however, teaches me to find the beauty. Beauty is everywhere, in the nature, in the objects and in the ideas. Beauty that I’d like to learn, to master, to draw, to create. This is what I think good design would do: create beauty, it may be aesthetic, but mostly functional, and when these two elements merge, something like perfection will born. We create objects that help people, but I think is even more important to create objects that make people think. Give them a hand to understand that we are taking the wrong direction. And this is what I would like to do, change the way of thinking of the italians, and give them something really important to believe in, something that can improve ourselves and those who are closed to us. I can’t understand some people, especially my peers who have the idea to stay in the “comfort zone”, to work behind a desk and do activities without an evident logical sense. Someone one day says: < I don’t wont to pass my life to work for someone else’s dream”, I cling to this sentence with all of my strength, making it a mantra. I have a dream and I want to work for that, I want that my work is going to reflect myself, ideas, my desire to create and help. I’m sure that when the passions becomes our job, it’s a defeat, and I want to commit to making it possible. It’s a bit of time that my conversations are related to one point: Why you do your job if you don’t like it? If it doesn’t satisfy you and reflect yourself? Change it! Escape from your status quo and try the lucky doing what you like to do. The answer however is every time the same: < Fabri, you are right, but what you say is pure utopia, you can’t live with this ideal. What I hope is to let they know that they are wrong, that whit the ideals, the life, we can change seriously. What I need however is a help from your side. I would like to learn as much as possible and surround myself with enthusiastic guys full of ideas and to create something perfect or less. The world is full of examples of people with their ideas who have changed the world, some very popular, others a little more reserved. I can stay here for hours mentioning them, but the concept is that at the begin what they had in mind are pure utopie, but with hard work they realise them, changing the people’s life.

GSC Guadalquivir Study Center The goal is to project a study center for the Guadalquivir river, with a polifuncional room and a meeting room. The center will born on the river bank near the street

WHERE

MADRID

Córdoba is a city in Andalusia, southern Spain, and the capital of the province of Córdoba. An Iberian and Roman city in ancient times, during the postclassical period (Middle Ages), it became the capital of an Islamic caliphate. It has been estimated that in the 10th century Córdoba was the most populous city in the world, and under the rule of Caliph Al Hakam II it had also become a centre for education under its Islamic rulers. Al Hakam II opened many libraries on top of the many medical schools and universities which existed at this time. Such universities contributed towards developments in mathematics and astronomy. During these centuries Córdoba had become the intellectual centre of Europe and was also noted for its predominantly Muslim society that was tolerant toward its Christian and Jewish minorities. Today it is a moderately-sized modern city; its population in 2011 was about 330,000.The historic centre was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

MEZQUITA The Mezquita of Cordoba is one of the world’s most impressive buildings making it one of the most remarkable tourist attractions both in Cordoba and Spain. Each year approximately 1.5 million tourists marvel at this impressive landmark featuring several architectural styles and uniting religious elements of Islam and occidental culture. The so called holy cathedral (former mosque of Cordoba) is not only the largest mosque in the entire world, but the largest temple in the world, as well. The building has mammoth dimensions: It stretches across 24,000 square meters and features as many as 856 esthetic columns made of marble, granite, jasper, and other fine materials.

RIVERSIDE WALK The riverside walk takes visitors through the visual discovery of the ancient city , then coming to the various bridges that become real access point for the city

PROJECT AREA The project area is located on a natural peninsula created by the river Guadalquivir. Position from which you can see the Mezquita , a key part of the city

The Guadalquivir is the fifth longest river in the Iberian peninsula and the second longest river with its entire length in Spain. The Guadalquivir is 657 kilometers long and drains an area of about 58,000 square kilometers. It begins at Cañada de las Fuentes in the Cazorla mountain range, passes through Córdoba and Seville and ends at the fishing village of Bonanza, in Sanlúcar de Barrameda, flowing into the Gulf of Cádiz, in the Atlantic Ocean. The marshy lowlands at the river's end are known as "Las Marismas". It borders Doñana National Park reserve. The Guadalquivir river is the only great navigable river in Spain. Currently it is navigable to Seville, but in Roman times it was navigable to Córdoba

HIGH The heights play a vital role in the creation of the building. Here we have an overhang of about 10 meters from the road to the river.

FUNCIONS PUBLIC bar/restaurant Multifuncional room Conference room Services

Since it is a research center of the river , integration with nature is crucial , however this must be a multi-purpose center and a landmark for the city and citizens. I am convinced that the open spaces allow connections between people, and that these inevitably lead to exchanges of views and the birth of ideas, which is why I think that an open space is critical for a place like this .

INTEGRA TION

PROJECT The project for the Guadalquivir Study center involves the construction of a research center of the river . This bisects the city in 2 parts, becoming a focal point for the lives of citizens . The proposal therefore is to create a space where the public can participate in the life of the center, informing and participating in conferences held here. The choice of location is related to wanting to annex a place, inside building , from where you can se a place of great interest : TheMezquita. The citizen then enjoy a fantastic view from the rooftop terrace specially designed .

HOW

POLIFUNCIONAL ROOM 100 MQ

BAR 106 MQ

The bar was born from the need to create a place where people are able to stay in company with a view of the river offer from the two windows. There are 6 tables that can accommodate 24 people that will be able to try the meals typical of Spanish cuisine

The study center is intended as a place of culture, for this we wanted to create a place that uphold shows and exhibitions , as well as screenings and workshops . To this are designed movable wall in order to allow the modulation of the spaces according to the needs of the users.

CONFERENCE ROOM 150 MQ PATIO 46 MQ Nature is important , so the idea is to be able to integrate with the building , creating a patio that would collect light and provide a place of relaxation for employees and citizens involved in the activities.

The conference was born from need of the center to create a place to exhibit and hold meetings directly with the citizen , to enliven the conference it was decided to create a large bay window looking the mezquita, a point of significant interest to the city. The glass may, however, be obscured for privacy reasons or to accommodate projections . This is the only space delimited with doors in order to allow more formal conferences

ENTRATA

TERRACE

COM PRI MOUN VAT SPA E S CES PAC ES

The terrace is a key site . Here you can enjoy views of the city and the Mezquita. It is accessed through a glass door and was immediately greeted by the timber and friendly atmosphere we breathe

The aim of the center is to become a hub of city life in cordoba. For this we wanted to create links between the street , the city , the river and the building . COMMOUN Citizens are invited to join and participate in activities in a totally free . For this reason we created an open space, which contains in its interior volumes open and self- dividing the various activities by SPACE 400 MQ creating an environment of freedom and hospitality . Along the path that goes from the entry to the rooftop terrace were designed with two windows overlooking the river and the city that somehow anticipate the magnificent view of the terrace. In the middle space between the patio and the conference room were placed stairs that lead to the private spaces of researchers, of course, can not be reached by guests of the center.

THE FUNCTIONS The project involved the construction of a research center with adjoining multi-purpose room and conference room . The thought immediately was to divide the building into two distinct parts : The Private and the Public . At street level , it was decided to fix the great center for citizens with an integrated bar with the idea of creating a welcoming place of transition between the center and the road. Anyone can sit down and have a coffee and while taking part in the activities offered by the property . It was therefore decided to create a center that would integrate with the city, suitable for everyone and as welcoming as possible , so we tried to limit as much as possible the use of dividing doors , leaving visitors free to move . The lower floors were laid the rooms, the kitchen, relax areas and workshops for researchers from which you access the river via stairs.

WELCOME An emotional space This project was designed to carry the user experience in a emotion , trying a variety of sensations associated to meet or welcome . The installation and the space we have created intend to create an atmosphere where visitors will feel fully involved, and whose mind will travel transported from the space , the lights , the colors ,the textures and the sounds. The element of surprise will play a key role in the installation , with waves of anxiety , anticipation and excitement leading up the sense of warmth relax finally ending in happiness at the end.

TOOLS

BUILDING

The building was built entirely by hand, with the perspective of creating a comfortable easy space to implement . For the entrance we used pallets screwed to each other to create the parallelepiped in the project. These were then covered with cardboard and blacks to darken canvas in the interior to create the desired situation . The structure of the intermediate tent has been realized using plastic hydraulic pipes , and covered with a double layer of black canvas, to maintain the darkness request. The final igloo was perhaps the most challenging construction , as it is made up of the same types of cardboard, bound together with glue and plastic wrappers to create a simple and self-supporting construction. Inside was lined with aluminum foil , which is used to reflect the light created by candles placed inside .

HAPPINESS

COMFORT ANXIETY EXCITEMENT

It was thought then to 3 concrete forms of implementation feasible with the limited resources available and in the short time allowed for the same: -A Parallelepiped for the input -a trapeze for the development -A Igloo for the final part of the installation

PROJECT INSTALLATION

The

IDEA

The idea is to create an installation that welcomes groups of people, instilling in them a reaction . So starting from this basic concept , it was decided to create three rooms, each one with its own identity , made of different materials and concepts .

An emotional Space It is the project of a temporary installation created by students at the University of Alicante . Starting with a music player to create the wright atmosphere. It which could make the visitors into the world created by us , The mp3 player played a song specially cut and fitted to arouse emotions in the required time to think about us . At the entrance, two animated figures showed the way forward solemnly , he was then invited to enter in the second room , a parallelepiped tent which was gradually lowering and narrowing to create a sense of oppression and anxiety. At the same time a smoke machine create a saturated and inhospitable atmosgera. Than a light ray moved up to indicate the input of the third space . The Igloo . When entered in the last installation environment they can see pillows scattered on the floor , hanging candles , whose light and refracted from the foil, and drinks offered. Here you have the feeling of being in a warm, welcoming and calm where you can relax by talking to the other participants , exchanging emotions and ideas.

WHERE The Gallaratese District is located in north-west of Milan and is one of the largest built from scratch in Milan. Built between the sixties and eighties, through a series of construction projects for the construction of large blocks of popular condominiums . The resident population is nearly 60,000 units. The context is therefore characterized by large tenement buildings, and, given the presence of a high density population, with many services, including Metro M1, the motorization, and the Bonola mall , as well as numerous educational and recreational centers. 6

The exterior space he open space has a fundamental role in ontessori teaching his relationship with nature led him to make discoveries that are important for its growth. er mo ement e er action ring a change that ma e him protagonist. It’s for this reason that we are given ample space to the design of the outside whose is in contact with the interior. he wal wa has a great alue in this it allows the succession of spaces opening all the windows in fact the internal paths are lin ed with the e ternal ones creating a single large path or rather the circuit continuous nfinite he interwea ing of these paths is going to create spaces each of which will carry out its task.

The most important space is the central square: the place where e changes ta e place he agora is accessi le from the outside from the central hall from teachers s classroom and from the multi-functional space from which it will ta e light and shade thanks to the tree in the center. The multifunctional space also overlooks a garden dedicated to the open la oratories where ou will perform more or less ordered activities . tarting from the la oratories the concrete ellow wall has a particular role that esides ha ing the tas to di ide spaces performs the function of the seat and of the game. Its profile follows a sinuous course that goes into creating filled and empt spaces used the children in the most di erse wa s in particular that of the integrated slide and swings. The slide was obtained by extruding a wall to form a covered space then usa le as protected place as a fortress or as slide depending on the child's imagination.

We therefore offer the ideas from which they can start to create their own histor and their own fantas worlds ach classroom will enjo their own pri ate garden where ou can continue the activities started in the internal structure. WHAT The interior Modularity is a key factor in this kindergarten, the possibility to create space by moving parts become a game. This children's house has been designed to change over time, and can accommodate the needs of younger guests. Starting from the central hall, the real heart of the kindergarten, going from just multifunctional space, and coming to the classrooms, everything is flexible, ready to change. The central hall is born as atrium to allow the free play of children, where the child is free to play with his favorite toys, always left free, in fact, helped by teacher only to finding the most suitable game at the moment. In this place, which could be defined as the square of the structure, there are exchanges of ideas, collaboration and experimentation between children of different sections, because, like the adults, the development of ideas and personal growth takes place with the relationships. With the exchange of ideas. The reports are then the basis of learning, and are the basis of the system of the sections. In the Montessori method, the classrooms are mixed; different ages children collaborate together to achieve solutions to problems. The section is then understood as a small group inside the community and therefore the classrooms are conceived as metamorphic interchangeable spaces depending on the situation. The possible solutions are manifold, and regulated use of walls - curtains which through a system of slide rails forming the spaces, by maintaining the space light and open. The solution of the free space is obtained by completely opening the classrooms, just going to create in the child's home an open floor plan, fully exploitable. The common part is a space of connection between the three classrooms, where you can do activities for most people. Everyone needs their own space, repaired, where to stay alone or with a few close friends, especially children. It was therefore decided to create niches which will be made from connection space between the classrooms.

LAUNDRY

The solution of the open space is obtained by completely opening the classrooms , just going to create in the child's home an open floor plan , fully exploitable. The common room is a space of connection between the three classrooms, where you can do work with more people. The niches are obtained finally in the space of connection between the classrooms , it’s a metamorphic space too .

The classrooms are large, with large windows that cover an entire facade for the exploitation of natural light, and a continuity between inside and outside. ll opening sliding windows wor continues towards the outside of the classrooms going to create a single environment. Inside the classrooms, the bathrooms are open, with no doors. A clever play of shadows divide the services from the rest of the room, while maintaining the space as unique and wide. In the division and modeling of space, have a fundamental role furnitures. For the design of that, Enzo Mari has been a great help, his children's chair "POP", produced by magis, consists of a particular compressed polystyrene, which gives it a strength and incredible lightness. Inspired by this, we have created the modular furniture that could be used in the most diverse ways to meet the various needs. These furnishings are child sized , as is provided by the method and they can be used as benches, tables, and for the construction of fantasy worlds with the simple stacking.

These can be transported and reassembled throughout the kindergarten, given the lightness , giving the child the opportunity to unleash their creativity by going to shape the space in which they live . The multifunctional space , open on the east side and on the central square , is a completely permeable volume , suitable for the most different applications . Here it can o erloo s the itchen with its stained-glass window that allows the child to " supervise " the work of the coo s and the area of ser ices bathroom , laundry room and Storeroom / Warehouse. Depending of the time and the type of furniture present, the volume assumes different meanings ; As laboratory, in the early hours of the morning As canteen at noon As sleeping area in the afternoon ... The child is so able to scanning the day , looking how small changes in furniture can change the sense of place. The kindergarten is then a single large space , changing, punctuated by his own will and his own actions, this makes him owner more than ever of the spaces and the house that welcomes him .
