Watch professional welders compete to make a 1⁄4 inch fillet weld using 1⁄8 inch E7018 electrode on low carbon steel in five minutes or less. The Professional Welders Competition is sponsored by the American Welding Society (AWS) and will be judged by a team of AWS Certified Welding Inspectors. The Grand Prize winner will walk away with $2,500 and the title of “Best Welder in America.” In addition to the grand prize, $1,000 will be awarded to the second-place finisher and $500 will be awarded to the third-place finisher. The top 12 competitors will win an AWS duffel bag. Each participant will receive an AWS Competition T-Shirt.

Interested in competing?

The competition is open to those who are proficient in using shielded metal arc welding (SMAW) on steel. Welders — union and non-union alike — are welcome. To compete, you must be at least 19 years of age. Pre-register online at aws.org/3VPVIY, or register on-site at booth #7162 Monday – Wednesday during show floor hours by filling out a form stating that you are a professional welder, and pay the $15 entry fee. You may bring your own helmet, protective clothing, earplugs, etc., or use those provided at the competition site.
