HAPPY NEW YEAR!

point of view |
For the past 12 years, Fabulous Floors has been an interior design magazine for the consumer. Our perspective begins with the floor, which sets the foundation and often the color palette of your décor. As we continue to grow, we are proud to announce Fabulous Floors Interactive. Building on the mobile work we are developing for clients in the industry, Fabulous Floors Magazine is happy to announce our own app debuting in 2014. Fabulous Floors Interactive will cover all major product categories using photos, videos, sound and voiceover to bring floor, décor and more to life for consumers. Additionally, there will be interactive features enabling users to choose color palettes, navigate through spaces and select styles. You can think of it as a show that shoppers can manipulate. Throughout this issue you will find clip-and-save ways to “Get Smart” about each category of flooring. Use this information to plan your next project. For more on “Get Smart,” visit www.fabulousfloorsmagazine.com. If Winter is here, can Spring be far behind? That’s usually when people start watching for the world to turn green. But “green” isn’t a season. It’s environmental responsibility year-round, and it’s becoming a way of life. Ultimately, we want a healthy home that’s also gorgeous… and you can have both. I can hardly wait for Spring! As you read this, Fabulous Floors Magazine editors and I will have returned from Surfaces, the flooring industry’s largest annual American convention and trade show, loaded with the latest flooring products, colors and designs. That means more “fabulous“ articles, photos and inspiration you can use. We’ve peeked at some of the new products and styles. All I can say is, “Is it Spring yet?”

Design Bring On Tiles With Pattern!
C
ombining advanced laser printing technology with ceramic tile has opened the gates to create tile floors, walls and counters that were unthinkable in the past.
A couple of years ago, ceramic tile wood-planks were introduced to homeowners. The look of wood with the performance and practicalities of tile were embraced. The latest generation of wood-look tile offers those benefits and much more: different graining patterns — think quarter-sawn and end-cuts, the 3-D surface of hand-planing and beveling, and the patinated, soft glow of a satiny waxed finish. An ever-growing range of choices allows you to find a wood-look tile that matches or complements an existing wood floor. These tiles can be used in areas where wood can be a challenge, like entry ways, bathrooms and kitchens, allowing you to keep a visually pleasing floorscape. >>

tile in style | Cohesive does not mean dull. The high-definition graphics on tiles have progressed to the point where larger tiles have what appear to be layers of images and a definite, natural movement. Natural doesn’t have to be plant-based! You can go wild with animal print tiles. How chic to have a cheetah print prowl across your kitchen floor? Another pattern option harkens to oriental carpets. The images are layered, revealing a depth and character reminiscent of Venetian palazzo surfaces. These tiles are most effective in a watery color palette, providing translucence and shimmer as well as ceramic tiles’ wearability and ease of maintenance. Densely patterned tiles can be used as an entire floor or inset as a tile carpet. >>

t i l e ◆ M olded, three-dimensional tiles in small-to-large formats can create texture and pattern when used with companion two-dimensional pieces. This is especially dramatic in subtle white-on-white or gray-on-gray installations. ◆ D ecorative and hand-painted styles — some by individual tile artists — can be integrated into your overall tile design. If you choose to include a few such tiles ( in fact, any insert or plaque), make sure sizes — not just colors — are compatible. ◆ D epending on your budget, add a simple metal accent on the wall or install a full medallion in an entryway or special space. Your retailer or designer can put your layout on a graph to scale. For more information go to www.fabulousfloorsmagazine.com

By Richard Howland
Tile collections let you “suit yourself” Tile encourages us to dream in three dimensions… along floors, up walls and around corners. We’ll acknowledge that the concept is not new. The ancient Romans and Greeks set the first standards for designing with tile on every surface imaginable more than 2000 years ago, and many installations are still doing their jobs today. But times and needs change. So does technology. It is modern technology that now gives modern tile designers heretofore unheard-of fashion possibilities for any surface in your home or business. Take, for example, Magnolia, Florida Tile’s HDP High Definition Porcelain® technology*, which combines a large grain pattern and gentle saw marks with minor imperfections that are inherent in a real wood. Combine that with the 8- × 36inch pressed plank, large format (see photo) consistent with current trends in natural hardwood flooring and it’s inspiring to think of where you can take this grand, old look in wood around your own home. The look and feel of real wood, plus the performance of porcelain. (*High Definition Porcelain™ uses a digital process that creates the look of wood, stone and marble.)

Unlike traditional glazed ceramic tile, where the color sits atop a neutral, most often white or cream-colored tile body, modern color body tile features consistent color throughout, tinted consistently with the tile’s glaze. Just as it is with natural materials, any “life events” affecting the surface will go largely unnoticed. (Check to see if the tile you like meets residential, light commercial or industrial standards.) More to the point, today’s porcelain and digital processes yield not only stunning designs but also formats, sizes and tile qualities appropriate for both wall and floor applications. These include those all-important trim pieces such as chair rails, listellos and inserts. This design-ability allows us to think of tile for walls and floors not clinically as a “system” but rather creatively as a design collection that lets you “suit yourself” with tile fashions that match, coordinate and even accessorize! ■
If you like real stone, Florida Tile’s PietraArt line offers looks you and Mother Earth would love (especially since Mother Nature made them), such as limestone, marble, pebbles, slate and mosaics. For more information on wall and floor tile in porcelain and natural stone, visit www.floridatile.com.
Natural Stone — Anyway You Want It! PietraArt, an extremely versatile collection of natural stone from Florida Tile, offers Travertine consisting of stone with only an “A” quality rating in the best selling colors — Light Travertine, Nocé/Walnut, Picasso, Silver and Scabos. When Size Really Does Matter…. Smaller Formats The 4 × 4, 3 × 6, 6 × 6 and matching “brick” pattern mosaics are tumbled for a soft weathered appearance and available in all natural, earthen hues. Larger Formats The 12 × 12 and 18 × 18 tiles are cut from larger stones ensuring that the sizes are consistent and exact. These honed tiles may also be installed with or without a grout joint allowing for a rustic or more contemporary look.
The Finishing Touches Complete your installation with an elegantly profiled chair rail, offered in two sizes, or a pencil molding in any one of the colors. The Travertine also coordinates with The PietraArt Medallions and Mosaics series to expand your design possibilities. MADE IN THE USA Florida Tile is proud to be a domestic manufacturer of highquality porcelain and ceramic floor and wall tile. Manufacturing plant, distribution center, corporate offices and showrooms are all located in the United States. All products are made with pride here in the US. We decorate for a sense of ease, comfort and solace. For connection to family. If you are seeking décor with depth, elegance and a sense of permanence and continuity, consider authentic hardwood. Wood flooring has always been cherished for its unique character. Its sheen, subtle textures and rich grains bring distinction to any room: hallway, kitchen, bedroom, formal and informal living areas. While design trends have come and gone, a solid hardwood floor continues as a classic choice. While preserving the classic appeal of wood, flooring manufacturers are discovering new design possibilities — even with familiar woods. For example, rotary or angled cuts produce different patterns on the face of the wood. Hand-scraped hardwood flooring generates an Old World appearance that is both elegant and rustic. >>
A natural and neutral floor, Hayworth from Mannington embodies a classic European look. With wire brushing, white washing, and variable sanding to create subtle variations from board to board, it can blend into any interior while maintaining an eye-catching uniqueness.

woodn’t it be nice | Wood’s rich patinas, subtle textures and distinctive grains, flares and flecks offer unparalleled and genuine beauty. Even the sound underfoot seems solid, rich and comforting. Wood imparts grace and value to an entry, hallway, kitchen, bedroom, stairway or living area, whether formal or informal. Slender, tailored honeyed oak remains by far the most popular and most traditional choice. But wider planks with deeper, richer colors are the growing fashion in wood floors, many with distressed, hand-scraped or wirebrushed treatments. Timeless, classic species include oak, cherry, maple, pine, hickory, walnut, pecan, beech and birch. Wider boards with rustic or Old World looks tend to feature more satiny (almost matte) finishes. With the introduction of more subtlety in hand-scraped and distressed looks, higher glosses and burnished glazes are gaining attention. Exotic looks continue to emphasize higher glosses, including elegant “piano finish.”

Imported wood species with their exceptional colors and textures have been setting trends in recent years. Amazing blues and espresso browns from Africa, Asia and South America add to the neutral browns and yellows Americans are accustomed to. Exotic looks from domestic species are making headlines. Stained to look like stunning exotic varieties, they are made from renewable domestics like birch and ash. As the industry joins with consumers and governments worldwide to ensure responsible forestry practices, it is important to note that American hardwood forests are renewing, abundant and sustainable. Bamboo is a sustainable exotic that continues to grow in demand. Naturally blond, it can be transformed into medium and dark browns though steaming, an environmentally friendly process requiring no dyes. Technically a grass, bamboo is renewable, tough, moisture resistant, elastic, affordable and decidedly chic. >> Brazilian Pecan from Indus Parquet

woodn’t it be nice | Ask flooring representatives about wear layers, seam and joint integrity, and longer warranties. The latest technologies produce wooden floors immune to shifts in temperature and humidity. Wood injected with an acrylic material can stand up to hightraffic areas found in malls! Prefinished solid and engineered wood flooring provides more colors, finishes, grains and patterns than ever, many with extended warranties and advanced finishes. Consider engineered for a handsome border or striking inlaid medallion. Since mixing elements is the design trend, engineered allows you to easily incorporate stone, leather, ceramic or metal tiles into your floor design. Engineered can be glued, stapled or floated over the subfloor. It snaps together for simplified installation and removal, and it easily accommodates radiant heat under your wood floor. If you’re less inclined to risk these days and more inclined to investment — emotional and financial — consider the beauty, tradition and value of a hardwood. When it comes to flooring, it remains the gold standard. ■

<< Traditional Character™ floors preserve and reveal all of the trees’ natural perfections, including original markings, distinctive graining and inherent characteristics that are highlighted beneath a smooth, durable finish. The result is an elegant floor that features both clear and character planks. Wire Brushed Styles subtly enhance the planks’ soft grain, creating a weathered, lined appearance. This look can be enhanced with a liming technique that highlights the grain.
<< Amish Hand-Scraped®. Every plank is hand-scraped by Amish craftsmen, and no two planks are the same. Like a piece of art, each plank bears the signature of its creator. Our traditional Amish scrape covers the full surface of the floor to create a texture-rich appearance, whereas our Amish soft scraped provides a subtle, rolling surface variation. >> Prime Styles represent conventional surface, finish and colors expected in a hardwood line. They also include trendy color choices that answer contemporary style demands. << Smoked Specialties™ flooring offers dramatic visual elements that add design and depth to a room. “If these walls could talk...” Y
ou’ve heard the expression, “If walls could talk, what stories they’d tell.”
As wistful as that adage sounds when we hear it, the reality is that walls have been telling stories since, well, forever! Wall décor helps tell stories of us and our lives, whether intentionally and planned out or by the whimsy of randomness. Think back. From your teen years to your dorm years to your first home to every step along your journey and that of your family, your wall treatments project the story of you, your personality and your stage and style of life. So, the fact of the matter is that walls do, indeed, talk. They speak immediately and directly to visitors who share that space. The story they speak to you every day, more quietly, perhaps, is one of comfort, familiarity and sanctuary. If nothing else, fabulous walls do the same thing as fabulous floors. So, if the second thing your visitors see and the spaces that surround you are your walls (by nature, humans tend first look down to determine where they are and where they are going before they look at their vertical surroundings), what will be the story your walls tell? And how will they make your environment feel to you and your guests? What a fabulous opportunity to tell a story, just as an artist does! Your wall all of a sudden becomes canvas or art — or both, depending on your taste. If you want to freshen the look of your home, these wall-specific treatments of stone and tile are worth a second look. Why knock down a wall when you can give it a current look? The beauty of an Eldorado stone wall goes beyond what your eye sees. It is made specifically for walls, and the components work together making design and installation a snap. As for Crossville’s reflective and frosted Sideview mosaic glass tiles (pages 22 and 23), the look is custom yet within the reach of sophisticated homeowners. It’s a new year; why not think outside the box for your walls? ■ Above left and right: Gemstone Wall by Eldorado Stone before and after.

Multi-beveled Glass Mosaic Tile Collection from Crossville is like “Jewelry for Walls” with a modern take on art deco’s high style. Sideview is a new glass mosaic wall tile collection with bold, opulent appeal. Inspired by design elements of the art deco period, the line features multi-beveling on the metallic-look mosaics. The beveling’s dimensional effect enhances reflection of light, providing an opulent, upscale look for wall installations.

FABULOUSfloors
Jewelry for Your Walls W ith its new Sideview line of reflective and frosted mosaic glass tiles, Crossville, Inc. gives homeowners custom-looking, faceted, jewel-like tiles that impart elegance and panache to every installation. The reflective tiles, including shades of tungsten, copper, gold and silver, resemble well-cut gemstones that amplify available light and draw the eye. The frosted tiles are reminiscent of cabochon gems, with a multidimensional depth of color. Interior designers have long used mirrors to amplify space and available light in homes. But walls of plate glass mirrors can be like living in a stereoscope. Along with the brightness and illusion of space, the flat planes of a mirror-wall can introduce visual cacophony into a room. Tungsten and silver Sideview tiles are as reflective as a mirror, while their intrinsic facets and the innate composition of a tile wall allow for reflection and refraction of light without the glare. It’s like living with an Impressionist painting rather than a Photorealism mural. By using mixed or matching metallics and finishes, the Sideview collection works well in contemporary and vintage interiors. The reflective shades of Sideview reference industrial design through the use of shiny,
jewelry-like shades, as do the well-worn patinated notes of the frosted tiles. These same qualities work with art deco and arts and crafts influences, too. Since Sideview is like jewelry for walls, the way the mosaics sparkle and play with light makes them perfect for accessorizing the walls in the powder room in a private home or a boutique hotel lobby. Can you imagine how fabulous the reflective and frosted copper Sideview tiles would blend to transform a kitchen backsplash? If that’s a little “much” for your space, Sideview tiles are perfect accents that will make you smile. The Sideview collection is recommended for interior walls or covered exterior wall applications in home and commercial settings. The 3" × 3" mosaics are mesh-mounted on 12" × 12" sheets, allowing for ease of installation. Sideview also comes in a 3" × 12" border and a 1.125" × 6" liner. These accent pieces can be integrated into wall designs as finishing trims for Sideview’s sheet mosaics or mixed with other tile products or surfacing materials to create stylish accents anywhere you need a touch of shimmer, shine or glamour. rea rugs are the oldest known floor covering, and perhaps the most remarkable. Area rugs can fit any budget, match any color scheme and enhance any design. With an area rug you can redesign, refurbish, remodel, recreate, rehabilitate, rejuvenate, revamp, remake or renovate any room. In an instant!
Because area rugs are such a personal choice — a reflection of individuality — we use caution in speaking of trends. If there is a current tendency in area rugs, it is to chocolates and warm earth tones. More designers are also using tone-on-tone rugs, with subtle shifts of shading and texture evoking refinement in today’s “casual elegant” settings, as well as in highly formal, sophisticated spaces. >>

◆ A rea rugs can be a way to be as expressive as an artist for the floor. underfoot | Plus, they go anywhere, indoors or out! And size matters, of course, as does shape, depending on your design purpose: Are you creating a focal point over wall-to-wall carpet? Covering a hardwood floor? Creating a space within a space – a cozy reading area, perhaps, in the corner of a living room? Faux animal prints, some woven of luxurious tufted wool, celebrate exotic species rather than exploit them. Both bold and neutral, these colors fit in seamlessly with many furniture styles. In fact, many rugs are “green” – fashioned from natural fibers (wool, silk coir and sisal) or from recycled materials. With an area rug, the boundaries of time and space simply melt away. This is what it must feel like to step out of a fable with the enchantment intact. One flourish. One flick of the wrists and your world is remade. ■

Carpet…
By Lisbeth Calandrino
the softer side of flooring A dizzying array of options, and always warm underfoot Personal style — that’s one of the top 10 decorating trends for 2014. But what does that mean, exactly? For a homeowner or decorator, it may mean incorporating a porcelain collection into the scheme of a living room, or a fleet of model boats in a home office. Anyone making design decisions needs versatile solutions. And carpet has the design chops to satisfy every challenge. With its seemingly endless variety of colors, textures, patterns and fibers — not to mention special features such as stain resistance — carpet is the perfect supporting character to the main players in a room. Because of the vast array of textures and colors available in carpet today, this flooring option can provide a unique unifying element in every decorating scheme. Carpet easily coordinates with upholstery and other soft elements in a room, which makes it king among designers and decorators, while carpet’s softness and comfort make it king among homeowners. >>

There are more styles and colors of carpet than ever before, as well as textures, patterns and special features, too. That’s good, because no two rooms are exactly alike. For today’s designers, decorators and homeowners, the right carpet allows them to achieve virtually any look, solve any design problem, and create a climate of unsurpassed comfort and convenience in every space.
Texture The physical construction of today’s carpet is so good it allows for textured looks that are subtle and beautiful, with a visual depth and dimension that surpasses anything previously produced. carpet couture | and high, cut piles, loose frieze, nubby Berbers, and smooth Saxonies — each with its own particular appeal and design suitability. But manufacturers haven’t stopped there. In fact, they’ve let their imaginations run wild – creating every sort of pattern you find in nature, from animal skins (even crocodile!) that employ different yarns and pile heights to carpet textures that replicate waves in the ocean. Carpet texture is achieved by the way the carpet yarn is twisted, usually by varying it from loose to tight. Twist also impacts performance. In general, the higher and tighter a carpet’s twist, the better it performs, as higher twists result in better defined, more formal and more sophisticated carpet loops that are easier to vacuum. Looser twists, in general, convey a more casual look. If you’re limited by a neutral palette, texture can make all the difference. Neutrals have surged in popularity recently, in large part because of their ability to harmonize the elements of a room. Their hold on our imaginations is both timeless and tasteful, however, which means neutral doesn’t have to mean safe or boring. >>

hop for the kind of cushion that meets your needs, including the latest generation, which is driven by technologies that make your life better and easier, as well as protecting that design investment. Ask about cushion brands that feature technologies and knowhow, which include barriers that isolate spills and keep them from seeping to the subfloor. They also make it easier to clean and maintain your carpet. Investigate better brands like Stainmaster® and OdorEaters® treated to eliminate odors caused by food and beverage spills and “accidents” caused by kids and pets. Most better-brand carpet cushions are Carpet and Rug Institute Green Label-approved, having been tested for low off gassing of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). Many products are recyclable and/or recycled — for example, containing recycled tire crumb. Look for products containing Ultra Fresh®, a product designed to prevent mold and mildew growth and, of course, act as an odor treatment for those spills and accidents mentioned previously.
Stain and odor protection you can’t see. Style and beauty you can’t miss.
STAINMASTER® carpet and STAINMASTER® carpet cushion are the perfect combination for beautiful floors. The famous stain resistance of STAINMASTER® carpet protects from the top, while STAINMASTER® carpet cushion provides additional protection underneath. By keeping liquids above the cushion, STAINMASTER® carpet cushion manufactured by Carpenter Company with Odor Guard Technology allows spills to be more thoroughly cleaned while helping to reduce or eliminate odors caused by pet accidents as well as most food and beverage spills. Pattern Plus You simply can’t play it safe with a neutral carpet if you have a bold decorating concept in mind. And bold carpet patterns have recently returned to the decorating forefront. So have large-scale florals. In fact, patterns of all types and in every scale are here to stay. The combinations of patterns and textures today are sophisticated, beautiful and timeless. And they’re simply too numerous to ignore. Technological innovation in carpet construction has made these remarkable visual effects possible. Faux animal skin, such as sexy leopard print or sweet and delicate fawn spots, all the way to more traditional florals, where texture is created in the background colors, are just some of the options. The same technological innovation that allows such versatility in pattern and texture adds to carpet’s durability, warmth and overall appeal, too. By combining cut-and-loop piles with yarns of varying thicknesses and lusters, for instance, manufacturers are making distinctive leaf and vine patterns, dot configurations and other distinctive designs. >> Above: Oh Gee from Legacy Mills, 100-percent New Zealand wool and made in America. Color Today’s carpet colors, whether they’re bright and vibrant or subdued, are inspired by nature. Nature with a kick, that is. Earthy shades of gray, beige and coffee brown, especially popular in high-traffic areas, can always hold their own, but with added flecks of color — even metallic fibers for added zing — there are more design possibilities available than ever before. Neutral colors, with the addition of, say, a smoky blue, soft green or pale yellow fleck, can pick up coordinating shades in other furnishings to further develop the depth of a room’s decor. ■

aminate flooring options have expanded in recent years as the technology behind this material continues to evolve and improve. Laminate is better now than it was 20 years ago — even better than just 2 years ago — and comes in a range of sizes and patterns wider than ever before.
Two decades ago, laminate flooring was just starting to take root here in America after having established itself well in Europe. Now, laminate is not only strong and flourishing, it is also a fixture on the design landscape. The latest trends in laminate are wood and toward longer and wider planks for the design look of natural hardwood and what’s called embossed-in-register, a technique which so accurately imprints and textures laminate that it looks like the real thing; even we’ve been fooled by some products. The strongest trend in terms of laminate looks has been wood; that is reflective of the popularity of hardwood over the past decade, from the American traditionals like oak, hickory and maple to the international exotics like Brazilian cherry and merbau or even mixed-species collections. >>

Say it with me… ‘NALFA’ The Voice of Laminate Flooring in North America
I
n 1997, a group of US and Canadian laminate manufacturers and importers joined forces in an effort to promote continuous and responsible growth within the laminate category as well as to help consumers through the confusing shopping process. Together, they became NALFA, now The Voice of Laminate Flooring in North America™.
As a voluntary team of the industry’s top leaders, NALFA is the only trade organization exclusively dedicated to the laminate flooring industry. In 2008, NALFA became an accredited ANSI standards developing organization and published testing and performance criteria that are the benchmark today by which all quality laminate flooring is measured. Products that pass 10 rigorous performance tests and meet approved standards are awarded the NALFA Certification Seal as a testament to their quality. The seal provides assurance for retailers and consumers that they are selling and buying quality products, respectively. The tests include: Static Load; Thickness Swell; Light Resistance; Cleanability & Stain Resistance; Large Ball Resistance; Small Ball Resistance; Water Resistance; Dimensional Tolerance; Castor Chair Resistance; and Surface Bond. As NALFA continues to expand and grow, its members remain dedicated to the principles on which it was founded: ● ESTABLISH and MAINTAIN consistently high performance and quality standards for laminate flooring products; ● EDUCATE and COMMUNICATE the meaning of NALFA standards and the value of the certification seal; ● SHARE knowledge with retailers and installers through hosted certification classes; and ● RESEARCH and EVAULATE ongoing opportunities for improved standards and technologies.

looring America is partnering with Pets for Patriots to improve the well-being of service personnel through pet adoption. Pets for Patriots brings together potential adopters and home-seeking pets, and helps with the pets’ feeding, care and veterinary expenses. As a national sponsor, Flooring America is campaigning to raise $250,000 to support Pets for Patriots’ work. The Pets for Patriots mission aligns with the core values of Flooring America’s independent retailers: a commitment to community, patriotism and giving back to those who served and are serving our country. Last December, at the Pets for Patriots annual gala event held in Washington, D.C., Flooring America received the first-ever “Pet Hero” award. Frank Chiera, vice president of marketing for Flooring America, accepted the award. Chiera said, “It’s an honor to be the first company to receive the ‘Pet Hero’ award. I am proud of our hundreds of members who are dedicated to raising money for this cause. Pets have an amazing ability to bring joy to our lives, and Pets for Patriots connects at-risk pets with veterans and military personnel, giving both humans and pets a second chance through forging life-affirming, powerful bonds.” One way Flooring America retailers contribute is through in-store events. A “Friendraiser” held by My Flooring America, Webster, Texas, brought together service veterans, pet rescues, customers and staff members to celebrate “vets and pets.” More than $1000 was raised during the fun event, and 100 percent of the proceeds went directly to Pets for Patriots. Pet therapy is a proven treatment for combat personnel returning home. Pets for Patriots is a member of the Army AW2 Wounded Warrior Program national community support network, and has launched a program with the AW2 team at Fort Carson, Colorado. Wounded soldiers who don’t qualify for a service animal — but would benefit from a new pet friend — will be referred to Pets for Patriots, whose shelter and veterinary partners in both Denver and Colorado Springs will help in the selection and care of a dog or cat. ■

always resilient | Hardworking and practical, resilient floors and their high-end cousin, luxury vinyl tile (LVT), have made inroads with new designs, contemporary colors and cool new finishes that are simply dazzling. You can find resilients today that are available in pearlized and stardust finishes, metallics, distressed and color-washed options, as well as abstract soft-surface patterns, exotic woods, colored concrete and even fossilized stone. Additionally, luxury vinyl tile (LVT) offers realistic grout options — thick or thin or butt joints. And resilient and luxury vinyl tile now offer gorgeous looks in larger tile sizes — just like expensive stone and ceramic tile — a trend in today’s larger homes. In recent years, resilient flooring for the home has adopted many of the newest wearresistant technologies which defend against scratches and scuffs and minimize hazing and dulling over time, thus keeping maintenance costs low. (There’s also a trend to bring some interesting commercial designs to the home and home fashions to commercial-quality resilients. Is yours a busy lifestyle? Color of the Year
C
olor of the Year — Pantone 18-3224 Radiant Orchid — is one of the most exciting announcements in the home improvement industry. A lot of work goes in to selecting it based on trends that the color marketing group sees and on political and social events.
■ What does it mean? Radiant Orchid blooms with confidence and magical warmth that intrigues the eye and sparks the imagination. It is an expressive, creative and embracing purple — one that draws you in with its beguiling charm; a captivating harmony of fuchsia, purple and pink undertones.
■ “Your True Colors…. Are beautiful like the rainbow” It is also a color of femininity, especially with the undertones of pink. And it’s a color of power — of royalty. This soft shade really does embrace the feminine side and the power of love and intuition. Radiant Orchid is a color of creativity, sparking new ideas and originality, which we are seeing take on an increased importance in society and business. It’s a “happy” color, too, inspiring joy, love and light. It is also a color of new beginnings.
■ What a difference a year makes Green is the color of change, so it stands to reason that there would be a lot of beginnings this year as a result of the green influence last year. We are coming out of the color green, which represents healing and prosperity. Purple also is a healing color. While green is more psychologically healing, purple is associated with spiritual healing.

Radiant Orchid is bright and light and can be done in a monochromatic scheme for simplicity and elegance. ■ Embracing change
■ Jacquie’s Story
Many people love purple but are unsure how to use it in their homes. Radiant Orchid is bright and light and can be done in a monochromatic scheme for simplicity and elegance. If you want a more dynamic room, you can pair it with some yellow to create an energizing and dynamic environment. Or you can add other colors like turquoise, teal or hunter green for a more blended look that still has a lot of variety in it. Gray is still a dominant neutral, and Radiant Orchid can be a nice accent color to add a “pop” of color. It will also add some life to neutrals like beige and taupe. We are already seeing the color on the fashion runways, and I have noticed more purples used in home design recently, so you can expect to be seeing more. If you love purple, this is definitely the year to update your décor. You will have a wide variety of options in all aspects of home décor, from fabrics and furniture to accessories.
Jacquie was a widow who had recently moved from her family home to begin a new life. This truly was a fresh start, a time when she was re-creating herself. She had been “wife” for so long that she had to remember who she was on her own, to rediscover herself. The first words she said to me were, “I want a lavender bedroom.” It was clear how important this was to her. Purple inspired her, calmed her. It soothed her soul. Her bedroom before had been very masculine and filled with her husband’s favorite colors. This was her chance to embrace her feminine qualities and let them shine. She called this her “coming out of her cocoon period.” The color gave her the strength she needed to make a new beginning, to find her power, and to open up on many levels. As we redecorated her home, I watched her bloom, becoming more comfortable with her situation, more adventurous and social. She truly transformed herself into a beautiful butterfly. ■

Fabulous Ways to Accent Your Living Areas
T
ile designs are a great way to incorporate your personal touch into any area of your home. Whether you’re looking for backsplash tile designs or an accent to your bathroom, tile can provide you with the finishing touch to your decorating project. But there are other considerations as well, like cabinet space, lighting, color palettes and more. We asked the folks at GlassTileStore.com to share a few ideas for your next transformation.
A subdued, neutral palette Recent surveys point to kitchen owners still preferring neutral shades of whites and grays as their kitchen backdrops. They provide a clean, minimalist ground for just about any kitchen theme, and also make a great counterpoint to both natural and industrial materials, such as wood or chrome flooring and trimming. Featured tiles: Tao Starlight
Practical, streamlined appliances Fixtures such as faucets and sinks are looking more architectural than ever, and have functions designed for utmost practicality. For instance, high-clearance faucets make it easier to wash bigger pots and pans, and a swivel spout lends convenience for multi-tasking kitchen duties. As for bulky kitchen appliances, they are fast becoming replaced by smaller versions which do the job just as nicely (or even better). Induction stoves are taking over big ranges because they cook faster, look sleeker, are easier to clean, and do not take up a lot of space. There’s also a growing demand for multipurpose kitchen implements such as coffee grinder-percolators. Featured tiles: Stain Coffee Bean 58

5 Ways to Transform Your Kitchen Brighter lights or bigger windows Even small spaces can improve with some illumination magic, which is why 2014 kitchen trends make full use of natural lighting via windows or an open floor plan. Opening up windows is truly energy-saving for a kitchen that functions a lot in the daytime. It also lets steam out naturally so you won’t have to worry about the rest of your home smelling like lunch. Featured tiles: Smoke Blend 1 × 2 Practical and convenient artificial lighting extends to the kitchen, too. Drop lights above the kitchen counter can have changeable shades for an instant makeover and mood lighting. Energy-saving bulbs like LED replace incandescent ones, and can also be used as a pilot light.
Tiled backsplashes become both functional and ornamental Glass tiles, whether they are subdued subway-style ones or come in colorful mosaic pieces, no longer have to be perfunctory features behind a kitchen sink or stove. Backsplashes are fast becoming favorite kitchen accent pieces because of their versatile looks and uses. They can provide a splash of color or texture to a neutral-themed kitchen while allowing convenient clean-ups after cooking. Featured tiles: Loft Spa Green Frosted 4 × 12
Emphasis on cabinet access and storage Open shelving, like the ones found in restaurant and hotel kitchens, are becoming favorites in busy home kitchens where a lot of cooking is done. For less busy kitchens, however, pull-out racks carrying specific kitchen utensils and implements are more desirable to keep them dust-free and hidden out of sight. Cabinet doors look more “invisible” and blend even more into the walls and countertops for a cleaner look and feel.

When homeowners choose to reside in newly constructed downtown buildings, they often struggle to reconcile the clean lines and pristine architecture of the new spaces with their desire to create a warm, comfortable home. It’s a challenge Laura Britt of Laura Britt Design in Austin, Texas, embraced when she transformed the interiors of a luxury high rise in downtown Austin. The developers asked her to showcase the possibilities of the spaces. Britt designed two model units, infusing the residences with a sophisticated neutral palette that emphasized the expansive views. She also worked with many individual homeowners to customize their new condominiums. Throughout the building, her signature approach was to ground the rooms with beautiful wool rugs, which she says “bring the whole space to life.” Britt chose sustainable wool rugs to set the tone in the living spaces, dining rooms and bedrooms. Soft to the touch and visually stunning, they provide a foundation for the furnishings and add depth and texture to the design. Crafted from natural renewable wool, the rugs last a lifetime. And they are environmentally friendly — after you sheer a sheep, the wool grows back making it possible to create the product time and time again. Natural wool wears better, washes better and aesthetically looks better than its synthetic 60

River-Recovered® Antique Heart Pine Vertical
By Gina Smith
Getting to the “Heart” of Heart Pine
H
eart Pine is quite arguably some of the most attractive and alluring wood in the world. The roots of Goodwin Company’s antique River-Recovered® Heart Pine trace back to vast tracts of Southern land, which were clear-cut along riverbanks during the 1700s and 1800s, then rafted downstream to sawmills. Longleaf Pine trees mature in 200 to 500 years. Almost all have a distinct, tight-grained wood known as “heartwood”.
Today, less than 5,000 acres of the once 85 to 95 million acres of virgin growth Longleaf Pine trees remain. Therefore, the antique logs recovered from riverbeds are true sunken treasures. Goodwin Company takes special care to retrieve each log by hand so as not to disturb the aquatic habitat. These beautiful logs have been preserved for centuries by cool water, allowing the heavy, dense “heart” to remain in perfect condition.
1890s logging operation on Florida’s Wekiva River; logs were often stored in the river near the sawmill.

Goodwin Company founder George Goodwin is the pioneer of the River-Recovered® process. There are many imitators, but only one innovator. He made it his life’s work and passion to recover these magnificent sunken treasures and transform them into the most beautiful wood flooring in the world. George and his trusted team of experts saw and air dry, then slowly kiln dry and precisely mill these logs to the highest quality standards. Goodwin guarantees that its River Recovered® heart Pine is 100 percent “heart.” Goodwin’s “truth in marketing” philosophy ensures that its customers enjoy the most durable, beautiful heart Pine in the world. For more information, visit www.heartpine.com.

As green as it gets: Mannington True Bamboo Natural.
Bamboo and cork are proud members of the wood family. Bamboo is a sustainable exotic that continues to explode in demand. Today’s bamboo flooring comes in interlocking tiles and planks, and in a multitude of colors, patterns and textures. (Bamboo is technically a woody, hard and hardy, fast-growing and quickly replenishing member of the grass family.) Naturally blond, it can be transformed into rich medium and dark browns through steaming, a dye-free, eco-friendly process. Bamboo is highly renewable, tough, moisture resistant, elastic, affordable and very chic.

Bamboo and Cork
Cork is another durable and fashionable option. From its familiar honey tones to the newest reds, greens, creams and chocolates, cork planks and tiles offer unique textures and designs that mix brilliantly with other elements. Sound and heat insulating, cork is warm in winter and cool in summer, easy underfoot, and once sealed (it can be purchased prefinished), easy to maintain with a broom or damp mop. Harvested from Mediterranean oak, cork simply re-grows to be harvested again — without sacrificing a single tree. Cork flooring can be glued down or floated over a variety of existing flooring types. And like wood, cork can be stained, bleached, etched, finished and inlaid in myriad patterns, including elegant borders. ■

Can ANY f loor be green?
I
nteresting question. The answers vary, depending on the product you select and what you truly need for a “green” floor in your home.
Some easy definitions of a green floor are that it is made from natural materials, like wood, stone or wool, or that it is made of materials that are recycled or are themselves recyclable. Most people would agree to those. Delving deeper, though, you might ask yourself, for example, if the wood used in your favorite floor was harvested in a responsible, internationally accepted and renewable manner. Was it reclaimed from a riverbed or old building, perhaps? Let’s not stop there. Let’s dig even deeper and ask if your definition of “green” flooring (and other products in your home) extends to things like purchasing products from manufacturers and retailers who have their own eco-friendly practices and programs in place, such as reducedemissions transportation or installation materials and techniques. Do you need to know if that new carpet is made of recycled fiber, or that it is recyclable? Is that product designed so that if it doesn’t neatly fit the first definitions of green that it lasts so long that its lifecycle markedly reduces the impact on the environment? And what about maintenance? Does the carpet and rug cushion you select feature safe ways to fight mold and bacteria? As with the very color itself, “green,” as in environmentally responsible, has many shades of meaning and appeal. When it comes to flooring, green is how YOU define it. ■

Get The Credit You Deserve When purchasing your next floor, ask about credit promotions offered by your specialty flooring retailer. No longer is credit merely a way to spread out payments. It’s become something far different—a money management tool for today’s family chief financial officer. More than a way to manage payments, credit represents the opportunity to buy better merchandise, especially when the timing’s right. Flooring is an investment as much as it is fashion because it becomes part of your home’s structure. When purchasing flooring, consider how long you plan to keep that floor and how long it will take to pay it off with credit. Wood lasts generations. You may want to change your carpet every five years or so. Ask yourself if the floor will add substantially to the value of the home. Credit options may turn out to be a bargain if you can comfortably pay off the purchase in a year or two, plan to keep the house for a long time and plan to buy lasting, quality fashions. Your project will likely begin with a budget. So, with flooring comprising as much as a third of one’s renovation cost, your credit plan can actually keep costs contained by helping to track and limit expenditures. Plus, credit lets you purchase economically—for example, when that special flooring goes on sale. Smart money managers also look to store credit as a way of keeping their regular credit cards open for routine— even emergency—expenditures. Because credit impacts your overall cost, look for stores that promote their own store card and offer specials to new cardholders. Ask about long-term special programs such as one and two-year “same as cash” offers. As a matter of course, better stores should be able to offer 60 to 90 days with no interest. At that time, your purchase either is paid off or rolls over into a revolving charge with interest starting on the purchase date. As a credit customer you can call ahead and plan future purchases with your specialty flooring retailer. Ask to be added to its VIP list for private offerings, too, and look for special shopping days and special products offered to credit card holders.

campaign for wool |
Beauty, Diversity, Practicality... Choose...ONEWOOL
W
ool is used in so many amazing, beautiful and different products it is easy to see why the Campaign for Wool wants to celebrate it — and the new ONEWOOL promotion does exactly that!
Inviting members of the world’s textile community to nominate their one wool product of choice has created a dynamic portfolio of stunning rugs, carpets and fabrics that shows exactly what His Royal Highness The Prince of Wales intended when he initiated this campaign to highlight how amazing wool really is. Here’s why...
Natural, Sustainable, Smart... The natural origin of wool as a fibre that is grown and not manmade has always been part of the unique story of wool. Sheep graze freely and contribute to the natural eco-subculture of the planet by doing so... an important part of conserving the many inhabitants and aspects of our land that we may not even be aware of — insects, small plants, tiny birds.
72
FABULOUSfloors
Textile manufacturers benefit from the way that wool is renewable every year; the wool regrows after shearing and so is fully sustainable. Every year there is a fresh supply of wool — this is at no cost to the environment or the resources of our planet. Nothing beats that! The many smart capabilities of wool have made it highly practical in carpets and rugs, particularly. It is strong and durable on the floor; due to its robust and springy structure, wool can resist flattening and bounce back to retain its good appearance over many years. It is also very safe, as it is naturally flame resistant — high water and nitrogen content are innate in wool — and so will only char and then naturally self-extinguish. Perfect for the family home and also for the commercial location, too. As wool has a complex composition with multiple layers in its cell structure, the fibre has the ability to absorb and release moisture; this is how the sheep keeps warm and also cool. How does this help the internal space? Well, effectively this natural breathing will help to adjust the humidity in the room and maintain the temperature to comfort levels that are neither over warm nor too cool. The added value of warmth, comfort and easy care all underpin the way wool looks and feels.
Looks beautiful...feels wonderful... The stunning ONEWOOL nominations show how wool excels in any design and any texture. Textile manufacturers are experts at transforming wool yarn into fabulous floors, and the nominations show the choice and quality of wool for the floor. ONEWOOL will run throughout 2014 and there will be many other products that join in this great promotion. So remember: Live naturally...choose wool! ■

Brintons Novae - our stylish hand tufted rug At Brintons we love wool because of the feel, durability, and warmth it brings to a room. With these factors in mind, Brintons is nominating one of our hand tufted rugs that are made of 100% wool. The concept behind Novae was to develop a new, strong design collection to symbolize Brinton’s recovery in the world of luxury carpet taking our position once more as design leaders. Ethnic & tribal decoration inspired by 2014/15 color and design trends were created by combining magnetic fields, metallic surfaces and designs that are innovative and futuristic.

Delos DELOS was first known as American distributor of European contemporary rugs. Since then, DELOS has reinvented itself into an American Manufacturer of Madeto-Order Area Rugs and Aircraft Carpet. When contemporary rugs became mainstream, DELOS made the move to become the industry’s first Made-to-Order area rug source. Once this need in the industry was recognised, it then made sense for DELOS to become a U.S. manufacturer, and last year announced entry into the custom aircraft carpet segment. Husband and wife team, Ivan and Leah Phillips, recognized the opportunity to not only bring textiles back to the U.S. during a hard economy, but to also re-invent people’s idea of what an area rug could be.

Give your room a voice, and don’t fall victim to simply framing your furniture. Celebrate a room by allowing your walls to speak with individual rug sizes and shapes. We invite people to dream, like we did, and create whatever inspires them. This flag, and all that it stands for inspires us. Although our rugs are robotically tufted, 85% of the work is still hand-crafted by highly skilled artisans, who we are proud to employ. For those who support us, we thank you, as does our team who strives to go above and beyond the needs of our customers every day.

Godfrey Hirst We have chosen our Merino Wool Carpet Collection. In a world where “soft” reigns supreme, and synthetic fibers try to emulate the softness of wool, Godfrey Hirst offers the original, natural and softest carpet for the floor with its Merino Wool Carpet Collection. The gloriously soft touch of wool carpet’s most luxurious fiber is elegant with inherent and timeless beauty. Merino Wool is not only a high performance fiber, it is also luxuriously soft. And since it is natural, sustainable, renewable and biodegradable it provides the benefits that only carpet made from a natural fiber can offer. With its rich history spanning more than 150 years, Godfrey Hirst continues to combine innovation with tradition and skill in crafting its fine wool products. Please visit our website for more information on all of our wool carpet offerings: www.godfreyhirstusa.com

With Lauren, J Mish has updated the classic stripe into new, fresh colors. The Extra Heavy Duty performance rating means that Lauren can be installed not only residentially, but also commercially, and in hospitality settings.
