These days, people are using more color in their homes, making bold statements with it and experimenting with the interplay of color and texture. But if you’re fearful of using broad expanses of color on your floor — flooring is, after all, a big part of any homeowner’s budget — you might keep the following tips in mind. First, educate yourself about color and the way it affects people’s perceptions. Dark colors, for example, appear cozy and make rooms look smaller, while lighter colors seem to enlarge space, making it airier and less intimate. The more you learn about color, the more fun you can have expressing yourself with it. When it’s time to shop for carpet, bring in with you swatches of favorite colors, colors you want to match or coordinate with, and ideas cut from magazines. Your hometown flooring retailer can take these preferences into account and guide you toward the right products, styles, and warranties. The result? A floor covering you’ll be happy with for years, in a color that says… you!

sing materials as old as the Earth itself, tile is the perfect embodiment of artistic imagination, practicality, and environmental responsibility. There is no other flooring material that brings its own sense of charm, uniqueness, and décor versatility as does tile. Here is a brief primer on the various types of tile and how they are best used. Today’s tile continues to wed tradition and technological innovation as fashion-forward design artists hearken back to ancient artisans for inspiration. The result of the perfect paradox? Rich textures, novel formats and breathtaking patterns in an incredible array of colors. From subtle to bold to gorgeously flecked, etched, streaked and dappled. Great design is all in the mix. The size and shape of a tile will have a profound impact on the look and feel of the room. >>

Types of Flooring Tile: As you shop for your new tile, you will, no doubt, come across two terms: glazed and unglazed. Glazed Tile: Once the tile has been fired, color is added to ceramic tiles. This creates bright, shiny, glass-like surfaces. Glazed tiles are usually for countertops and walls. Unglazed Tile: Also known as quarry tiles, this type of tile uses its natural pigments throughout (no colors are added). Very popular for flooring. You will also find that there are a variety of types of tile for you to choose from. Here is a quick list: Ceramic Tile: The most popular and common type of tile flooring. Tiles are created using clay and other minerals, and then kiln fired. Available as glazed or unglazed. Glass Tile: These tiles are available in huge variety of sizes, shapes, and colors. Can be slippery, however, when wet. Porcelain Tile: A very hard tile that is created by firing at extremely high temperatures. This tile is moisture resistant and a good option for bathrooms and outdoor spaces. Terra Cotta Tile: Created much the same as clay garden pottery, this tile brings warmth into a room and is a great idea for making a room look more rustic. Saltillo Tile: If you are looking for color shades of yellow, orange, or red, check out this tile. Created by air-drying outdoors, under sunshine, a very traditional and natural tile. Because they are very porous, Saltillo tiles should not be used in wet settings. >> 6

How To Clean Ceramic Tile Flooring Courtesy World Floor Covering Association
Here’s some advice on cleaning and caring for your new ceramic tile flooring:
Above: Retroclassique in Lt. Avocado by Florida Tile. Below: Divine woods, crisscross liner in light brown from Marazzi USA.
Sweeping Dirt adheres easily to the surface of ceramic tile, especially styles with textured surfaces. Regular sweeping loosens and removes most dirt. A vacuum cleaner can also be used to sweep, but make sure you use one without a beater bar to avoid dulling and scratching the tiles. Vacuum cleaner attachments are great to suck up dirt along edges or in between tiles. Mats Use doormats to keep dirt being from coming into your home. And shake them out often. This will reduce the amount of dirt being tracked across your ceramic tile floor, and will reduces the wear to the finished surface. Mopping Ceramic tile floors should be damp-mopped using manufacturer-recommended grout and tile cleaners. For heavier soil, spot clean the floor with a sponge or clean cloth using the same recommended cleaners. Heavy Cleaning Mild scrubbing with a soft brush or electric polisher/ scrubber may be required for textured tiles. After cleaning with a mild detergent, rinse thoroughly with clean, warm water to remove leftover residue. If necessary, wipe the tile dry with a clean towel to remove any film. For soft water situations, an all-purpose cleaner may be necessary. Apply it to your floor and let it stand for 3 to 5 minutes. Then lightly scrub with a sponge, rinse well and you’re good to go. Cleaning products available from your local grocery or hardware store can be used to remove soap scum, hard water deposits and mildew stains from ceramic tile. Be sure to consult the cleaning product’s instructions to ensure the product is recommended for your type of tile. After cleaning, rinse well and wipe dry for a sparkling shine.
Dos and Don’ts Do clean up spills as quickly as possible so the grout won’t become stained. Don’t use steel wool, scouring powders, or other abrasives that can scratch the finish of your ceramic tile. Do remember that while ceramic tile is very durable, it’s not indestructible and may crack or chip under extreme force. Don’t use bleach or ammonia-based cleaners — these products can discolor your grout if used too often. Do take the proper precautions when moving heavy objects across a ceramic tile floor. Do cover furniture and table legs with protectors to guard your floor against scratching. Do that if a repair is necessary, the replacement product may be a slightly different dye lot and/or texture than the original tile, however, with time and usage, the replacement tile will blend in with its neighbors.

Thin Tile… Slimming down while ‘styling up’ It was only four years ago that the concept of thin tile for walls and floors was the hottest thing being introduced at the international design shows. Now it’s a trend.
D
efinition: “thin tile“ is a bit of a generic term. We must recognize first that there is no standard thickness in tile. There never was. Thicknesses always have varied by manufacturer and by type and by tile type — ceramic, porcelain or stone. However, if we agree that relatively “standard,” traditional tile typically is 3 ⁄ 8-inch thick, that translates to 9.5 millimeters. Now, by recognizing that the new thin tile for walls start at 3mm and for floors at 6mm tile obviously is slimming down. Some benefits too thin tile are obvious, others are not. Thinner, lighter tiles use less material, making them more environmentally friendly, easier to ship, handle and install. But did you know there is a hidden benefit? In many cases thin tile can be installed over existing floors or wall coverings, eliminating the need to rip out existing materials, and they are easier to cut to fit. That saves time and money. Oh, and did we say the new thin tile materials and technology make them perform like traditional tiles in most cases… regardless whether new construction or rehab? Here is where you can let your imagination go with respect to using tile virtually anywhere. Thin tile also can be used for stair treads, exterior facades and cladding, facing cabinets and furniture and countertops. Because the material is through-body
(one homogenous color, not a colored surface), edges can be routed or bullnosed to create a very smooth manufacturedlooking edge with standard on-site tools and without impugning the integrity of the tile‘s look.. And if that does not get your creative juices flowing, consider that the “thin-ness” of the tile allows for installation over many CURVED surfaces, virtually impossible with standard tile. One of the companies on the leading edge of the thin tile movement is Florida Tile. In March, Florida Tile introduced THINNER®, a large format, perfectly flat, thin (as thin as 3mm) porcelain product with pieces as large as 39 by 118 inches! Think of the design possibilities and speed of installation. (The company says THINNER® is a third the weight of traditional tile and reduces installation time by as much as 40 percent.) Recent introductions by Florida Tile include looks available in two contemporary cement designs and one in wood. The wood design can be used for heavy commercial applications where natural wood will not stand up to traffic. More designs are on the way for interior and exterior applications and for use on floors, walls, countertops and backsplashes. There’s an old expression which says “less is more.” The new “thin tile” is a perfect example. ■
Thin tile from Florida Tile can be manufactured to 3mm thick, versus traditional tile at 8 to 12mm. Glass fiber mesh on the back adds strength so it and can be installed over many existing, stable hard surfaces. It is suitable for residential or commercial use.
Aventis THINNER® by Florida Tile is a contemporary aged urban concrete look. This large-format, 3.5mm-thick tile in six colors is shown here in Eclipse (dark black), Titanium (light grey), and Nut (weathered brown).

Beautiful as Wood, Create a Luxurious Convenient as Tile. Oasis Representing a whole new category in porcelain tile, THINNER by Florida Tile is a unique product. Designed to be as thin as 3.5mm, yet have the same technical properties and durability of much thicker porcelain tile, this new product will open the door to a whole new world of design possibilities. Imagine being able to renovate your space without the cost, delays and inconvenience of tearing out your existing floor or wall finish. Slate Tile: Are you looking for a darker color tone? Consider slate tile with its natural grain. Stone Tile: Available in stone such as marble, granite, and many others. Can be expensive unless you opt for stone-like tiles which are made of stone aggregate that is suspended in polymer. Looks very similar to solid stone but costs much less. Terrazzo Tile: Created by adding chips of granite or marble to the surface of the tile, suspended in epoxy–resin or concrete. Often seen in hallways, entryways, outdoor areas.

To fulfill your decorating dreams, tile flooring is available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. You can find tiles shaped as squares, mosaics, octagons, or hexagons. Or perhaps you prefer larger formats or planks? When you add border tiles or accent tiles, you can create a tile floor that is truly one-of-a-kind. Tile flooring offers you more design options than you can imagine. Affordable, versatile, and available in so many shapes and sizes, it frees your imagination to be as creative as you want to be. ■
Getting Ready for Your New Tile Floor Installation Courtesy World Floor Covering Association
Your new tile floor will be installed soon; what should you do to be prepared for the big day? 1. R emove items (clothes hamper, toys, etc) out of the room. 2. Move furniture and appliances out unless the installers will do that as part of the contracted job. 3. If cabinets or vanities are to be moved/ repositioned, empty those as well. 4. I n most cases, your existing flooring will have to come up. This can be a dusty, dirty job and you may want to hang plastic sheeting over doors to catch dust before it enters other rooms. For dusty jobs, close AC/heating ducts to prevent dust from traveling through the system.

Design Tips for Tile Courtesy World Floor Covering Association
Here’s some great design for planning your new ceramic tile flooring:
Above: Beautiful wall tile from Seneca. Right: Art tile floor from Motawi. Below: Bergamont from Oceanside Glass.
When planning your tile layout, think color and pattern and coordinate the whole room, floors, furniture, walls, accessories. Consider your whole design scheme at the same time. The more powerful your tiling décor is, the more restrained your other elements should be. This is a good time to consider how thick or thin, how dominant or restrained you want your joints and grout lines to be. Unless you want joints to be a dominant part of your pattern, they should be as tight as possible, with no grout lines, or use light-colored grout. Assess the size and scale of your tile, its individual design and the overall pattern –– as well as your layout –– within the context of your room. A busy border around a busy field of tile can be confusing and distracting. However, a strong frame around a plain field makes a more tasteful, significant and chic statement. Thick or multiple borders will help reduce the spacious feeling of a large room. Skip borders around the room if you intend the installation pattern to run through a doorway. The key to selecting grout color is to determine if you want to match the grout to the tile so it blends and makes the area you’re working in look larger. Light grout colors will help, too.

Today’s Hardwood Flooring is Not What It Used to Be
I
t was not that long ago when homeowners who wanted hardwood flooring in their homes had two basic choices: Red oak or white oak. Needless to say, if you were building a new home, or remodeling an existing home, your décor options were severely limited. Well, that has all changed. Today, you can have the exact hardwood flooring that you want, without hassles and within your budget.

It is a simple fact that there are now thousands of hardwood flooring options available to you. The difficult part for many homeowners is deciding which is best for their individual needs. To help you along, here are some important issues you can consider before you go shopping for your new hardwood flooring.
More Choices Than Ever Before! Today’s modern hardwood flooring is available in a variety of plank lengths and widths. You can have flooring that is uniform or you can have flooring that is composed of random lengths and widths. Standard solid hardwood flooring is 2.25 inches wide (known as a strip). Wider widths such as 3.25 inches have become very popular today. Larger planks, up to 7 inches, are often used for rustic or country décor settings. >>

woodn’t it be nice | You also have a rainbow of color tones to choose from in either domestic hardwood species or exotic species. Under the domestic category, you will find beautiful color tones in walnut, hickory, chestnut, oak, and dozens more. Exotic hardwoods include cypress, African wenge, tigerwood, Brazilian Cherry and Santos Mahogany. These are only a very few of the exotic species available. Color tones for exotic woods range from very light (Amendoim) to very dark (Brazilian Walnut) and every color tone in between. Bamboo and cork flooring are also very popular today, especially for those who want truly “green or sustainable flooring”. Bamboo offers a truly unique look with many color variations, while cork flooring creates one of the most comfortable underfoot experiences in the hardwood flooring market. Did you know that you even have options when it comes to character marks? If you want a hardwood floor that contains interesting grain patterns, unique knots, color streaks, and so on, you will be very pleased with the many offerings available that will allow you to be as rustic and rural as you want. >>

PERFORMANCE
Now Backed By A
US Patent # 9,156,233
Today’s engineered flooring products make a lot of claims about performance, but only COREtec® from US Floors has a patented construction that redefines flooring function. USFloors, with corporate offices in Dalton, GA received its U.S. Patent # 9,156,233 on October 13, 2015. The U.S. Patent covers all engineered flooring products with a WPC core and a veneer top layer, with or without an attached backing. US Floors’ proprietary COREtec® technology features a waterproof core structure that is impervious to wet conditions, a luxury vinyl top layer to resist chips and dents, and a tough wear layer for superior abrasion and stain resistance. 18

PATENT
This advanced structural dynamic provides customers with flooring that is equally at home in both active residential and commercial settings. “The issuance of the U.S. Patent confirms the unique innovation of our COREtec® product and reinforces the recognition and strength of its intellectual property,” comments Piet Dossche, US Floors CEO and President. “Our intention remains strong to work with those companies who respect our IP and are committed in growing this brand new flooring category in a quality focused and profitable way, while vigorously protecting it from destruction caused by bad, cheaper-quality introductions coupled with price deterioration.”
“The issuance of the U.S. Patent confirms the unique innovation of our COREtec® product “ - Piet Dossche, US Floors CEO and President.
CHOICES ABOUND IN CORETEC® LINE US Floors is focused on developing COREtec® as the next revolution in luxury vinyl flooring. The product represents an attractive alternative to glue down LVT, solid locking LVT, or laminate flooring. Its extruded core structure is made from recycled wood and bamboo dust, combined with limestone and virgin PVC. Since COREtec® is 100% waterproof, it can be installed in wet areas and will never swell when exposed to water. The product is inert and dimensionally stable, so it will not expand or contract under normal conditions. This feature removes the need for expansion strips in large rooms. Each plank has an attached cork underlayment for a quieter, warmer floor that is naturally resistant to odor-causing mold and mildew. With almost 100 SKUs in the COREtec® line, US Floors is committed to continuing its role as a market leader through product development and design, says Dossche. The company is focused on bringing the widest selection of superior quality products and decors to the marketplace, he remarks. “The overwhelming support from our customers has proven that our COREtec® products are being accepted by consumers as a product that meets a true need in active homes and commercial settings alike,” states Dossche. “We are very proud to receive this U.S. Patent # and would like to thank our many customers for supporting and believing in us.”

T
hough many may never recognize it, we wage a constant battle every day in attempting to find balance in our surroundings. We, as human beings, are organic... wholly natural. Yet, with human progression, we’ve experienced a regression in our connection with nature. Our technological advancements seem to move us further away from the very things that ground us, that we take root in. Today, the designs we see in the products we use, the buildings we live and work in, and the decor that surrounds us is consistently attempting to bring us back to a visceral connection with the earth. Oshkosh Designs understands that while nature brings us a sense of familiarity and comfort, we also yearn to be inspired and excited by the introduction of something new and different. With the simplistic natural depth of the woods we use, and the spiritual movement of the metals set within, many of our new designs portray the perfect juxtaposition of the natural and the industrial.
If you can see it... we can create it. At Oshkosh Designs, custom is our standard. We pride ourselves on the ability to customize any medallion, border, or parquet floor to create the floor of your dreams. Our team of talented designers and craftsmen work to incorporate new trends while ensuring we maintain the superior quality our customers value and ask for by name. Oshkosh Designs has taken our expertise in parquet and inlay manufacturing to a whole new level by designing stunning new products featuring metal accents in either aluminum, brass, or copper that are certain to inspire awe and admiration. Beside the connection between our modern world and our natural world outdoors, our medallions fulfill still other desirable functions. For example, a breathtaking medallion strategically placed in a large floor area becomes a focal point that stands out from the ‘sameness’ of a large area of flooring. They also shout ‘class’, particularly when placed prominently at the main entrance of our homes. A medallion is distinctive and unique — it speaks well about the people who live within a residence or work within a business. Cleaning and Maintaining Your Hardwood Floors Courtesy World Floor Covering Association
Lastly, you will find that there are hardwood flooring construction options to meet any need. The two most common are solid wood and engineered hardwood. Keep in mind that solid wood flooring can only be used at or above ground level to avoid moisture-swelling problems. Engineered hardwood, on the other hand, can be used just about anywhere, even over concrete subflooring. Engineered hardwood flooring is NOT laminate flooring, but rather true wood planking, constructed in layers, with quality brands able to last anywhere from 40 to 100 years... or longer! Regardless of the hardwood flooring that you select, your new floor will bring new life to any space, along with a visual richness that you cannot achieve with other types of flooring. ■
Hardwood Flooring Installation Tips The installers are coming to put in your new hardwood flooring; what should you do to get ready for them? Here are a few tips: 1. Remove smaller, personal items such as photos, keepsakes, etc. Remove furniture, unless installers have been contracted to do that for you. Installers can often work around huge items (pianos, pool tables, etc) but make sure you bring this up with the flooring store beforehand. 2. Clear a way for material to be brought in and taken out. This usually means moving objects from hallways that might get knocked over or damaged. 3. Match product numbers when hardwood arrives to ensure it is correct.
22
FABULOUSfloors
Along with a hardwood floor comes the responsibility of keeping it clean. The better care you take, the longer your floor will maintain its original beauty. STEP ONE is to purchase a high quality broom so that you can sweep your floor regularly of dirt, dust and other particles. SECOND STEP is a vacuum cleaner without a beater bar, to get in between the boards and other hard to reach areas. Deeper cleaning techniques vary depending on the installation and finish of your hardwood floor. For “Finish in Place” hardwood floors, using an 8" × 14" terrycloth mop with a rotating head that makes cleaning corners, under cabinets and along base boards as simple as pie is recommended. Professional cleaning products recommended by your flooring retailer can be used to remove tough stains and spills without dulling the finish of your wood floor.
Cleaning Products Hardwood flooring manufacturers of prefinished wood floors have specific recommended cleaning products for maintaining the wood floor’s finish. It is best to use their recommended cleaning products and follow their instructions so you do not void your warranties. If you don’t know the manufacturer of your wood floors check with your local flooring retailer since there are many different wood floor finishes today. Always test the cleaner first in some obscure corner, such as closet or pantry to make sure you are using the right product.
Do and Don’ts • Don’t use a wax on a wood floor with a urethane finish. • Do use cleaners that won’t leave a film or residue. •D on’t use ammonia cleaners or oil soaps on a wood floor — they’ll dull the finish and affect your ability to recoat later. •D o use a professional hardwood floor cleaner to remove occasional scuffs and heel marks (just spray some cleaner on a cloth and rub the stained area lightly). Professional flooring retailers carry specially designed spray cleaners designed for today’s hardwood flooring. •D on’t wet mop or use excessive water to clean your floor (wood naturally expands when it’s wet and can cause your floor to crack or splinter). • Do clean sticky spots with a damp towel or sponge. • Do minimize water exposure and clean spills immediately.

’TIS THE SEASON TO REALIZE YOUR FLOORING DREAMS
R
ight now is the perfect time of the year to purchase the flooring of your dreams. The cooler air and lower humidity provide ideal conditions for installation and makes for a more comfortable season for DIYers to work in. It’s also a great time to find deals. Flooring retailers want to clear inventory for the new year and there are often year-end sales and discounts to be found. As an added bonus, starting your new flooring project now means holiday entertaining doubles as your big reveal. You spend the most time indoors during the colder months — make it more enjoyable with beautiful, new floors. There are so many flooring options that choosing one can be daunting. Here are a couple of recent trends that will distinguish your home with style.
Versatile Gray With a clean and understated elegance, gray flooring has become increasingly popular for its ability to complement a home’s décor instead of distracting from it. Available in a variety of looks, from beautifully weathered hardwoods to high gloss and low gloss laminates, gray flooring offers trend-forward style with a whisper of sophistication.

Best of Both Worlds Wood look tile combines the beauty of wood and the ease of tile. This new and exciting flooring trend is popular because it offers long-lasting style that is durable and versatile. With wood look tile, it is now possible to have the warm and elegant look of hardwood in high-moisture areas such as kitchens, bathrooms and wall backsplashes.

A Fresh Take on a Vintage Look Historically, most American homes were made with wood floors that used widths of at least five inches. More and more customers are inspired by this vintage style as it brings modern grace into a home while adding historical charm and depth. Modern-day wide plank flooring is the perfect synthesis of trend and tradition. Available in a variety of styles and colors, from light bamboo to dark hardwood, it will enhance the look of any style of home. Regardless of the season, you spend a lot of time in your home — whether in the bedroom, dining room or kitchen, a home is your living space and sanctuary. You deserve a floor that looks great and makes you feel good. Check out flooring retailers like Lumber Liquidators for these trending looks. Now is the time to have the flooring of your dreams. ■

How to Clean & Maintain Your Carpet Courtesy World Floor Covering Association
Here’s some advice on cleaning and caring for your new new carpet: Need carpet cleaning products, or help from a local carpet professional? “Wipe your feet on the mat! Leave your shoes at the door! Walk on the plastic liner!” People can be so fussy about preserving their carpet. Some demand that freshly “mown” look with perfectly parallel. Others lose their heads over a single crumb. Assuming you’re not one of “those,” here’s some tips on keeping your carpets just as clean and cozy as they were the day they were installed.
Wipe Your Feet Mom’s three favorite words ring true after all. By placing a mat at the doors that lead to and from backyards and garages — and enforcing their use —mud, dirt and other yuckiness can stay outside and not get tracked across the carpet.
Suck It Up Regardless of your militaristic skills when it comes to keeping dirty feet off the carpet, dust, food and other everyday grime is going to make its way onto your precious pile. That’s where a good vacuum comes in. Buy one and use it often. Choose between an upright, or one of those fancy robotic models that requires little more than the push of a button and the occasional emptying of the filter. Frequent vacuuming sucks up the dust and loose dirt, refreshing your rugs and extending the life of your investment. Above: Orbit by Nourison. Below: Smartstrand by Mohawk. Background: La Jolla Group from Stanton.
Watch Your Weight Heavy furniture, potted plants and other home décor can crush carpet pile and leave compressions that you may not notice until you redecorate or move. It’s a good idea to shake things up every once in a while — rearrange the furniture and your carpet will thank you.
Stay Out of The Sun Those large picture windows invite the sunlight in, casting a beautiful glow across your home. But in the same way the sun damages our skin, its ultraviolet rays can also damage the color of your carpet over time. To avoid sun lightening to your carpets, shut the curtain or blinds when the sun is most intense or use UV glass or film in your windows.
Watch the Spills “To eat or drink on the carpet? That is the question.” Long before Shakespeare might have contemplated that line, everything from cracker crumbs to red wine has found its way onto and into costly carpets. When these events occur (and they will occur), begin the clean up process by using a dry cloth to blot up as much debris or liquid as possible. The longer you wait, the more the fibers will absorb the stain. Warm water should then be used to rinse the stained area. Press the cloth into the carpet to soak up the moisture until the stain is gone. Don’t scrub and don’t use hot water. You’ll damage the fibers. Finally, rinse the area with warm water and absorb the wetness with a dry cloth. After your carpet is dry, vacuum it to restore its texture and appearance. There are some carpet cleaners that do actually work. Ask your retailer about cleaning products that have earned the Carpet & Rug Institute’s (CRI) Seal of Approval. ■

ouglas Fir is renowned for its strength, durability, and ability to stand up to the elements. In addition to its robustness, Douglas Fir has rich coloring with the heartwood aging to a dark tan-red color and the sap wood remaining light tan. Douglas Fir is widely considered to be one of the finest materials available for trim, mouldings, doors, flooring, windows, exposed beams, ceilings and paneling.
Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir Flooring
Timeless Strength and Durability, Enduring Beauty and Character…
100% of Rocky Mountain Douglas Fir is sourced locally. When used for flooring it averages 20+ rings per inch. More rings per inch drastically increases stability and density resulting in a far superior product. Due to long harsh winters in the Rocky Mountains, Douglas Fir has to withstand extreme environmental conditions, for this reason even after being harvested they make some of the most hardy logs and lumber on the market.
Why Douglas Fir Hardwood Flooring? Douglas Fir flooring has been the preferred hardwood flooring throughout the Rocky Mountain West for over a century. Douglas Fir flooring has been used throughout the US since the 1800s and is often found in classic historic homes. With a 200 year old proven track record, many old barns, granaries, and western structures still contain Douglas Fir that has withstood the test of time. In fact, many of these old structures are being reclaimed and re-manufactured into hardwood flooring that will extend their life to yet another generation.
Glacier Park Lodge was built in 1912 and is supported by 60 massive Douglas Fir timbers. The actual age of the trees range from 600–900 years old. The timbers range from 36–42" in diameter, stand 40' tall, and still contain their bark! The timbers in the lobby are Douglas Fir and the verandas are supported by cedars from Washington state. Albany Woodworks — A Well-Built Base
W
hen Richard Woods watched a barn being torn down 4+ decades ago, he had no idea that someday it would inspire him to open two unique businesses. He constructed his entire home with antique heart pine and cypress that he carefully salvaged from 100-year-old buildings like the barn, along with as much recyclable material as possible. Woods found that reclaimed wood was far better than anything people could buy new. From this realization, Woods desired to find a better way to use waste in a positive way for a business. His first company, Albany Woodworks, got its start in the home he built for his family. Today, the family business reclaims original well-seasoned beams using state-of-the-art machinery, to supply reclaimed and salvaged for use in new construction or remodeling projects.
Each customer’s order is first selected from Albany Woodworks’ beam stockyard to maximize the usage of these ancient timbers. Dating back to over 1,000 years ago, Antique Cypress and Heart Pine cannot be duplicated in quality, durability, and affordability. Albany Woodworks carries on a long-standing tradition of delivering quality craftsmanship in Southern Louisiana. We are able to offer the very best selection of reclaimed 100% heartwood Antique Heart Pine and Cypress for homes. With 37 years in the business, Albany Woodworks is the preferred choice for Antique Building Materials. ■

Waste to Energy Systems Below: Silvan Collection Natural; at bottom: Castlewalk Collection
While growing his lumber company, Richard Woods had to find ways to manage the waste his operations produced. He needed a sustainable use for byproducts like wood chips, sawdust and shavings. Following five years of intense research and development, Woods invented the bioHearth®, which functions through gasification, a method of converting any kind of carbon-based waste into a gas similar to natural gas. Woods quickly learned that the market for bioHearth was anything but limited, and that it could fit into almost every industry. Now with the capacity to the Albany Woodworks facility from the plant’s waste with the goal of integration onto the grid, Woods was ready to take his bioHearth® technology to market as his second startup, Waste to Energy Systems. Gasification makes this system more practical and energy efficient, because bioHearth® can be installed on the customer’s site. This is a big advantage for companies that currently have to haul their waste to a gigantic plant. Woods’ has developed a system that fits right into their systems; that’s this company’s unique concept. He is now pursuing patents for this new technology. Five months ago, he put up an Internet webpage to start marketing bioHearth, and has since been inundated with contacts from people who want to know how it can help in their industries. It seems clear that the new bioHearth® product being offered by Waste Energy Systems has very significant potential in a huge number of industries. This is a very eco-friendly product with important value to both the companies that will use it and our sensitive environment as well. This seems an accurate prediction based upon the initial results when Woods first exposed bioHearth on the Internet. ■

It’s Your Call Call it tough. Call it Frugal. Definitely call it gorgeous!
Laminate flooring, already celebrated for its ability to project hardwood, now offers remarkable innovations in realistic stone, dazzling digital-age images and lustrous glosses. Yet, through all this, today’s laminate stubbornly insists that beauty should show off its practical side.
Starting with thrift. You can have the appearance of rare tulipwood, fine-grained teak, burl wood or wide-plank apple wood at a fraction of the price. You can even have the impossible. Gorgeous species (too rare, too fragile to cut for flooring!) are available — and affordable — in laminate. Narrow, tailored strips in oak, maple or exotics create a more formal appearance, whether classic or contemporary. Square (flush) edges enhance the smooth, traditional look. And a strip floor is ideal for visually expanding the size of your room. The hottest wood looks in laminate include longer planks, beveled edges and a multitude of finishes ranging from soft oil to bright piano finish. Planks with beveled edges create dimension, highlighting detail in the natural wood appearance and creating a stunning look when set against sleek, modern décor. Designers are particularly enchanted by wide planks with handscraped or wire-brushed distressed looks. Some designers are even mixing plank widths to create a custom look that remains traditional but is less formal. >>

FABULOUSfloors
Embarking upon a new construction or remodeling project is incredibly exciting but can be overwhelming, especially for those who have never been through the process. With tasks including space planning, finish selections, plumbing and lighting selections, and construction logistics, there are countless decisions to be made. ASID designers are professionally trained to identify their clients’ needs and guide them through the decision-making process. The goal: to create meaningful spaces where clients feel comfortable and nurtured. By integrating architectural and interior design solutions through a holistic approach, we create transformative spaces that are both beautiful and functional. Expanding upon this, we carefully consider the many design factors tied to both human health and sustainability. From specifying low VOC paints and adhesives to customizing upholstery content based on client allergies to integrating sustainable furnishings, designers tailor interior environments to the overall health, safety, and welfare of those occupying the space. From classically traditional to forward-thinking modern design projects, the process of selecting flooring involves several considerations, through which an interior designer will guide the client. Function,
aesthetic, and investment are all factors taken into consideration. Designers have the knowledge to determine the type of material best suited for the application based on factors such as durability and slip-resistance. Aesthetically, designers filter through hundreds of options to determine which selections best achieve the desired look and create the greatest impact. When it comes to tile, if a client falls in love with a selection that exceeds their budget, a designer can create a layout that incorporates the specialty tile sparingly with something more cost-effective, giving the client a special space without having to exceed their financial comfort zone. An ASID designer knows what detailed questions to ask and how to streamline the selection process, making for an enjoyable and personalized experience for each client. Designer’s WALK Tiny Houses
BY JEANETTE CHATSWORTH
Y
ears ago I saw an article talking about the beginning of the “Tiny House” experiment. At the time, it was one man with a passion for simplicity and affordable housing. He was trying to build a lifestyle that revolved around ones simplest needs and made it elegant. The big question, Do we really need so much space and so many things. His answer was a resounding no. He found life much easier, and more gratifying in a tiny house and wanted to educate the world on this approach to life. The Tiny House movement gained some traction after Katrina when many were built to give the victims a place to live. This publicity made them more popular. And when the recession hit, they were a great alternative for many people who were having trouble with the impact of the economy. Years later, it is not one man with a dream, it’s a movement. There’s even a TV show covering the wide variety of options in the tiny house market. The high cost of housing, the recession and all the clutter that surrounds us electronically and in what it takes to “make it” has shown an increase in the tiny house marketplace. Cutting out the clutter frees your mind and soul to do the things that it really wants to do. The average house size went from 1,780 square feet (165 m2) in 1978 to 2,479 square feet in 2007. The tiny house movement was a reaction to that trend, people believing that they could easily live in less than 1000 square feet. Another element in the tiny house movement is sustainability. You can be completely self-sufficient — with solar power and collected rain water. You can go off the grid. Not having to pay utilities will reduce your expenses as well as your footprint. Many of the products are sustainable as well, promoting recycling. For those who are aware of how much we take from the earth, it’s an opportunity to be more one with nature, limit your footprint, and enjoy life more. >>

Designer’s WALK While living in very small spaces may sound daunting to some, for others it’s freedom. It means having your own home, having more free time to spend with family, it means more flexibility and makes it easy to move whenever you like. There are a lot of advantages to having a tiny home. The costs are much less than the average home and therefore you don’t have to work as hard to keep your home. This allows you to spend money on other things or reduce the need to push so hard for money. It may mean the difference between being able to stay home with your kid or not. There are a lot of reasons people are doing the tiny house lifestyle. The most intriguing thing to me are the designs. The designs are imaginative, creative, efficient, and well thought out. If you’re going to live in 112 square feet, every inch matters. Every inch has to be designed — not just the floor but the walls and possibly the ceiling. There is no wasted space. I have been in 5,000 square-foot homes that had the usable space of a 3,000 square-foot home. There was a lot of wasted space in huge hallways, entryways, and corridors that didn’t do
much. While the house FELT big it didn’t actually do much. What is amazing to me is how big these small spaces feel. Good design matters and the people involved in the tiny house movement have mastered design. Every little bit of storage is both necessary and well-designed. Even using ceiling space for storage in order to utilize every bit of space. I find the storage and living solutions fascinating. Bookcases that become beds, coffee tables that become dining tables or even beds. Every piece has to be fully and often multi-functional. Your home is your castle, whether it’s 200 square feet or 2,000. Famed American architect Louis Sullivan coined the phrase “Form Follows Function” and tiny house design does that elegantly. It’s about creating a highly effective living environment with no sacrifice in style. Attention is paid to every element to make sure that it is both pleasing to the eye and comforting as well. The spaces are so well designed that you forget how small they are in size and feel the big heart of the space and a lifestyle that reflects a simpler life. ■

Louis Henry Sullivan (1856–1924) was an American architect, often called the “father of skyscrapers” and “father of modernism.” An influential architect and critic of the Chicago School, Sullivan was a mentor to Frank Lloyd Wright and an inspiration to the Chicago group of architects who are now known as the Prairie School. Along with architects Henry Hobson Richardson (1838–1886) and Frank Lloyd Wright (1867–1959), Sullivan is one of “the recognized trinity of American architecture.” The statement “form follows function” is attributed to him although he credited the origin of the concept to an ancient Roman architect. In 1944, Sullivan was posthumously awarded the American Institute of Architect’s (AIA) Gold Medal — the second architect in history to recieve this prestigious award.

Man cave — a room or other part of the home regarded as a refuge for the man or men of a household.
A “man cave” can realistically mean anything you want it to! “I have just built the ultimate man cave of my dreams.” Who said this remarkable statement you ask? Well, pretty much every guy that has pursued and conquered the perfect room as their everyday manly refuge. Whether it’s the ultimate sports capital of your street or your favorite sports teams’ memorabilia hanging from wall to wall as you and your buds are staring down that 85 inch TV screen while watching your favorite sports.
Man the Cave! You are in that oversized, leather reclining chair until you can’t keep your eyes open anymore. Or maybe it’s the ultimate gaming room with Pinball machines, a few air hockey sets, pool tables and 3D racing games. Perhaps, you just want a room to use as a workshop so you can finally fix that bike you have been meaning to repair for years or other gizmos that have needed to be fixed around the house for a while. All while having a fully custom bar to kickback and have a drink with your friends and family. Basically the definition of a man cave is a place where you can go to relax and just get away from everyday life to enjoy what you love most, which can literally be anything. The options are endless!! Now the best way to get the most unique and jaw dropping look out there is to figure out what kind of flooring suits the theme that you are going for. You can go with all-purpose flooring like porcelain tile. Porcelain Tile is so versatile it can be the foundation for any style — ◆ High-Tech ◆ Urban chic ◆ Rustic ◆ Traditional ◆ Eclectic

One of my favorites is the distressed hardwood look. It is absolutely stunning and would matchup great in a rustic, hang out style man cave mixed with some modern elements. Just don’t forget to be stocked up on your favorite adult beverage because looking at your new hardwood floor; you will surely want a glass on the rocks…. A toast to your good taste. Another great porcelain tile look to consider is a vintage faded hardwood for the floors in random lengths and widths and cross pattern them across the whole room paired with a modern metallic and glass tile adorning one of the walls as an accent feature. Be creative! Don’t forget to get courageous and have this wood style creep up your wall around your fireplace. Talk about jaw dropping! Sports fans can’t be left out in the dark either! We know that you are going to have some comfy leather chairs in your room and possibly even a leather style table. So why not make the floors leather tile too! Sounds crazy right? Think again. Leather tiles or planks are great because they are available in a myriad of colors and textures. They are just as durable as they are luxurious. Leather tiles and planks can be treated with a wax for extra protection Go with a contrasting color or size for around the bar to complement the rest of the room and to show your friends your great sense of stlye. Come on guys… don’t just dream it, make it a reality! ■ List of must haves for your man cave:

T Premium Flooring Installation Materials: Are They Worth the Added Cost? 66
FABULOUSfloors
he cost of premium flooring can be high. Depending on the type of flooring (carpet, hardwood, tile, etc), and the amount of space you are covering with your new flooring, the cost can run upwards of $1,000 or more. Since your new flooring is an investment, wouldn’t it make sense to spend a few dollars more to ensure that the materials that are used during installation are of top quality, as well? Even if your new flooring project cost less, the use of quality materials will also benefit you! Installation materials will vary depending on the type of flooring you are having installed and the type (and condition) of your sub-floor. Here are a few useful tips to help you better understand the importance of quality installation materials:
Carpet Cushion/Pad Get a heavier weight (8 lbs is very good) as this will last longer (up to 15 years in some cases). Look for padding that is hypoallergenic, low-odor, noise reducing, and meets indoor air quality testing.
Adhesives Quality adhesives are used during glue-down jobs for carpet, hardwood, vinyl sheet goods, and some types of ceramic tiles. It is most often used on concrete sub-floors where nailing is not practical. The adhesive holds the flooring to the sub-floor, but low-quality adhesives will come loose over time, requiring costly repairs. A high-quality product will hold for decades. Look for low-odor, fast bonding products that can be used on moisture-free slabs above, below, or on grade.
Underlayments New underlayments are not always necessary, but when they are, purchase high-quality products to avoid problems later on. Examples would include cement board for tile setting, and new plywood for vinyl sheet good installation. Look for low-odor, anti-microbial, and mold/mildew resistant products. â–
Premium materials and professional installation make all the difference!

When installed with residential ceramic tile, mortar, and grout, and in accordance with TCNA installation standards, UltraLayer was rated for light commercial use in office space, reception areas, kitchens and bathrooms. When installed with commercial porcelain tile, epoxy mortar, and epoxy grout, it is rated for extra heavy and high impact use in flood plants, dairies, breweries, and kitchens.
UltraLayer features randomly air-laid filaments that create a capillary effect to cushion the floor, dampening ambient sound in the room in which it is installed and minimizing impact and airborne sound from traveling to the room below - important attributes in condos, multi-level homes or multi-family housing. Sporting excellent insulating qualities, UltraLayer adds an R-value of 0.42 to the floor assembly that will keep floors warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. When used with ceramic, UltraLayer inhibits concrete subfloor cracks from telegraphing through to the tile or grout above. It is warranted for a period of 15 years to suppress the transfer of lateral cracking of up to ¼” from concrete subfloors to the covered flooring material. UltraLayer is a rollout underlayment so there are no factory-made creases which could leave voids that can create wobble from footfall on installed tile. In a remodel, UltraLayer can be installed directly on top of old VCT or non-cushioned sheet vinyl as long as that floor covering is still adhered tightly to a level, even and structurally sound solid subfloor. UltraLayer is available in 3' × 33.4' (100 sq. ft.) rolls.

WOOL WEEK 2015
Celebrating Wool… British Style
T
here are many wonderful things about wool but perhaps one of the most wonderful is the annual week-long celebration of wool held in the UK. Wool Week is the Campaign for Wool’s way of gathering the wool and the wonderful together to pay tribute to Mother Nature’s most fabulous fibre!
Sheep are at the centre of the wool story and this year the Campaign put two flocks on to Savile Row, home of the world’s most famous tailors which are of course major users of wool in gentlemen’s suiting. Wool-on-the-Row — the creation of a pop-up rural scene in the heart of London did not come without considerable planning — as the road, just off Regent Street — one of London’s major shopping streets — had to be closed to traffic. As London’s black cab drivers bemoaned the loss of the road, visitors flocked to see the sheep in action!

As the busy life of London buzzed around it, the street took on the harmony of a beautiful pastoral scene, real turf, wood fencing and some very handsome sheep! Male and female models meandered up and down and the ‘Row’ — as it is known locally — showcasing the style and the sheer luxury of quality wool with great tailoring. Two sturdy wood sheds showed the story of wool from raw material to finished item, something many people never really consider. The fascinating transformation of the fleece was told to thousands of people who had the chance to meet spinners and weavers and see wool change dramatically throughout the process. Not far away from this activity, in a small terraced mews house — the Campaign also hosted ‘Capsu-Wool’ — a neat and stylish look at wool for the compact interior space. This contained a delightful ladies lounge in pastel shades and a very suave gentleman’s study. It showed how wool can create an ambience that lends a defined quality to the room. A small Carpet Art gallery made flooring a wall feature and showed at eye-level the dynamic shades and creativity of wool in flooring. A seventies theme inspired by Missoni by Crucial Trading and the dynamic pixillations of Zuzunaga by Brintons sat next to the understated tones of Pentreath and Hall by Alternative Flooring and the pleasing master art of Roger Oates flatweaves. This small offering providing a mere glimpse of the way wool carpet adds considerable interest and a powerful dynamic to the living space. Workshops and woolly hats all played a part in celebrating everything that wool has to offer. Stylish, beautiful, tactile and of course full of performance attributes that make it long-lasting, durable and safe. Wool is surely the most impressive and versatile of fibres as all these activities showed and which is what Wool Week is all about! >> FALL 2015

Why Wool for Floors…Why Not! Wool is a practical purchase and has so much to offer! It provides the carpet and rug world with the most respected and responsive fibre for the floor with a history of outstanding appearance retention compared to manmade alternatives — a truth that is acknowledged by the industry. Its complex natural cell structure is power packed with bounce and vibrant structure to keep it looking good for a very long time. Add to that its inherent reactive science and you have a remarkable list of credentials that will keep you very happy — as your floor looks good for longer! ■ S trong and resilient with added bounce to prevent fattening and tracking in the home ■ Long lasting appearance retention — resisting dirt and the dreaded grubby/ugly look ■ Safe — naturally flame resistant due to high water and nitrogen content, wool is acknowledged as safer in fire situations ■ Breathes with the room — adapts to the humidity creating a comfortable internal climate that improves your health and well-being. ■ Easy to maintain — a true workhorse on the floor and needs very little maintenance other than regular vacuuming ■ S pill and soil smart — wool has the advantage of microscopic scaly surface with a cell structure that holds the spill at bay. Clean up with paper towels and watch the spill disappear! Left: A nod to bespoke gentlemen’s style with a custom button-back chair upholstered in British Wool on dip-dye style rug.
Capsu-Wool represented wool for the compact space — shown here a lady’s salon in pale pink and pastel shades — all in wool.

Thank you to our Super Sheep! Sheep all over the world graze freely while growing wool. The sheep is annually shorn and this keeps them healthy and maintains their welfare. The fleece is a natural protection for the sheep, keeping it warm and also cool because their wool, just like our hair — adapts to the conditions around it. We assure you, there are no overheated sheep! But what is really wonderful, is the transition process, the shorn fleece moves on to another use and the wool product maintains the self-same properties that the sheep enjoyed throughout its entire product life. Smart sheep… smart carpets!
