CASH!

By Savannah Ludwig

A

NOTHER HOLIDAY SEASON

You may be wondering, How do I do that?

HAS COME AND GONE and in

the process you’ve received

another stack of Gift Cards. Your well intended friends, family or coworkers have once again showered you with the ultimate token of appreciation — the loving gesture — the present of all presents that says, “Buy what you want, I ran out of time while shopping.” OR “I have no idea what you want.” Sarcasm aside, Gift Cards are awesome — if you remember to use them or if you actually frequent that particular store or restaurant. Statistics show that in the U.S. up to 20% of all gift cards are never redeemed and with over $120 Billion in annual Gift Card Sales each year, that’s a whole lot of wasted money. So if there’s no sentimental intent and you don’t plan on using the card, what do you do? Try turning them into CASH!

8 FACE | JANUARY 2016

Well, to find out the most popular ways to do this, I called in the crackerjack investigative team at FACE to help me find the major players in the industry and here’s what they discovered. There are a few websites that cater to turning your gift cards into cash. They specialize in cards from national retailers and restaurants and from what we can determine; the process is fairly simple and affordable, with processing fees of approximately 10% to 25%.

RAISE.COM The first site we reviewed is Raise.com, who allows you to list your gift card for sale and suggests the amount to list it for with promises of a quick sale. A $100 gift card was suggested to list at a 13.02% discount for $86.98. Selling at that price would net the seller $73.93, after fees.

CARDPOOL.COM Next, there’s CardPool.com. This site makes a direct offer to you and will mail a check or offer electronic redemptions for qualifying retailers if you accept the offer. For a $100 gift certificate, a $77 offer was made.

GIFTCARDGRANNY.COM Finally, there’s GiftCardGranny.com. A combination of the previous two sites that allows you to choose between selling your gift card directly to a list of online buyers or auctioning your card on Ebay.

There are a few websites that cater to turning your gift cards into cash. All three sites offered multiple options on how to receive your payment, such as direct deposit, standard check, electronic redemption or PayPal. Check the sites for terms and conditions, as they may vary. For a quick link to these sites and additional information on how to turn your unwanted Gift Cards into cash, visit us online at FaceAcadiana.com.

Age gracefully 20 - 30 years old

BY MANAGING THE PROCESS

Managing your appearance by choosing a board certified

• Most Gift cards for national brands are redeemable for up to five years. • For the past 8 years, gift cards have been the single most requested item on holiday wish lists. • The average Gift Card is worth $40. . • Over the past 10 years Gift card spending has increased by 80%.

For those who believe the full moon has significant effects, it is important to have positive thoughts and actions during the full moon and up to 2 days after; otherwise the negativity will multiply.

When crazy things happen, one often hears, “Must be a full moon.” This is a common phrase among law enforcement and emergency workers. Holding many mystical connotations, the full moon is thought to cause aggression, crazy antics, injuries, menstruation and sleep deprivation. Even pets are By Kisha Kana affected with more injuries and primal instincts than usual. But, the full moon isn’t all bad — farmers think it’s the best time to plant crops, fisherman say they catch more fish and hairdressers suggest it’s the best time for a trim to speed up hair growth. So, what gives?

BLAME IT ON THEMOON

14 FACE | JANUARY 2016

Some studies show the same gravitational pull towards the moon which causes larger tides in the ocean is the same pull that amplifies the internal workings of humans — which are also (mostly) made up of water. For those who believe the full moon has significant effects, it is important to have positive thoughts and actions during the full moon and up to 2 days after; otherwise the negativity will multiply. Whether this is a myth or not, it can be a good monthly practice to calm and center oneself — using the full moon as a time to manifest aspirations. Remember, whether good or bad, the moon cultivates those emotions at this time.

MAKING THE FULL MOON WORK FOR YOU • Get plenty of rest. • Repeat positive affirmations to yourself. • Create a manifestation poster of your life goals • Meditate alone or with like minded individuals. • Hold off on life changing decisions and confrontations.

FULL MOON – The moon is full when the moon is on the opposite side of the Earth from the Sun. When this occurs, the entire surface of the moon looks to be illuminated. The full moon occurs every 29.53058 days. NEW MOON – A new moon occurs when the moon is between the earth and the sun. The moon is too close to the sun to see at all, during the exact time of the new moon. BLUE MOON – Today we consider the Blue Moon to be when a full moon occurs twice in one month. Originally, a blue moon was considered to be when a full moon occurred 4 times in a season. A season usually has 3 full moons. The term became popular to reference any rare event. BLACK MOON – This is a term that isn’t used frequently and has no exact definition. Some sources say the term is used when there is no full moon in a month. Having a month with no full moon is very rare and can only happen in the month of February, because it has fewer days than the moon cycle.

LONG WITH EVERY NEW YEAR COMES the commitment to make

VALUES

Contemplate your . Consider what is truly important to you, what do you want to focus on for the new year — relationships, health, financial status, career, spiritual growth? When you are clear about your values it makes it easier to spend time and energy pursuing the goals surrounding them. Get very about what you want. Rather than saying you want to “eat healthier” hone in on exactly what you mean. Define the precise things you want to change about your current habits. Do you want to dine at home 6 nights/week, eat 4 vegetable servings daily, eliminate snacking before bed, eat 100% gluten free? Outline 2-3 things you will focus on to specify your exact goal. Create . As part of your goal setting process, decide how you will carve out space daily to accomplish your goals. Consider time wasted on unproductive activities such as social media, surfing the internet, or vegging in front of the tube. You may have to wake up a little earlier or say no to committing to things that are not moving you toward your purpose. Creating the daily space will ensure you are real about your intentions.

to finally reach that healthy weight and body that you have always

wanted? First step, stop FAD dieting! The first two red flags of a diet are if your calories are so low you can’t exercise, and the diet doesn’t fit into your lifestyle. Don’t lose the weight fast, just

TOP 3 THINGS TO DO TO ACHIEVE YOUR GOALS

BREAKFAST COUNTS, IN MANY WAYS Yes, yes, yes, we have all heard “Breakfast is the most important meal of the day.” If you start off your day healthy, chances are you will want to continue that path. If you start your day with no breakfast, or an unhealthy breakfast, you get this mindset of “Oh well, I will start tomorrow.” According to a study in the Journal of the American Dietetic Association, those adults who ate breakfast regularly tended to exercise more and ate fewer calories than those participants who did not eat breakfast.

to put it back on even faster. Here are the 3 tips I give all my clients to help them achieve a healthy lifestyle and see the pounds shed each week. 28 FACE | JANUARY 2016

Another important aspect of breakfast that must be considered is the type of meal consumed. Not all meals are created equal! Breakfast is

the perfect time to get in a good fuel source for the day, so opt for things loaded in vitamins, minerals, fiber, and a little protein to hold you through the day. A breakfast loaded with carbohydrates (example: pancakes) and no protein (tip: add some eggs or egg whites) is a sure recipe for disaster. You will be hungry in an hour or so and feel very sluggish. You need both carbohydrates and protein to fuel each meal and snack you eat during the day! Fresh foods and whole grains are loaded with these components, are low in calories, and are quick and easy to prepare.

Keep this rule in mind when consuming breakfast:

Avoid Surgery Try VAX-D

“Strive for Five”: At least 5 g fiber and 5 g protein (aim for 10 or more) 20 g or more at meals and at least 10 at snacks is a great goal for your entire day.

EXERCISE IS JUST AS IMPORTANT, AND IT DOES NOT MEAN YOU CAN EAT MORE Many people just don’t realize how important exercise is in reaching their goals. You can only eat so few calories, so you must burn some off! Furthermore, it’s a stress reliever and will just leave you feeling better and healthier. One recommendation is don’t set your calories too low, set them higher so exercise is doable and enjoyable. Women stick closer to 1400-1600 and men 1800-2000 (1200 and lower is just not realistic). Now just because you exercise doesn’t mean you should eat those calories back. This will make you maintain rather than lose. You must make sure you are exercising enough — 2 days of walking will not cut it. Your ultimate goal should be 4-6 days, with 40-60 minutes of cardio or a combo of cardio and weights.

BUY YOURSELF A HEART RATE MONITOR It doesn’t have to be a fancy one, but one that has a strap. It can tell you your calorie burn, specifically by how high your heart rate gets (this will make you push harder). Many people walk for an hour and only burn 100 calories. Make your time worth it. Your goal should be to burn 300-500 calories a session. Mix it up, cardio and weights. The harder you push the faster you burn!

The treatment is an effective, safe and cost-effective procedure without the risks associated with drugs, surgery, injections or anesthesia. WITH DARK 6 tips to boost your mood this winter

The problem typically starts gradually as the days become shorter in late summer or fall, and peaks midwinter.

(BPT) - It’s that time of the year again, when the days grow shorter and the weather becomes colder. Approximately 45 million Americans are negatively affected by the change of seasons and darkening of the summer light. They experience a drop in energy, have trouble getting up, feel down, crave carbs and become irritable or withdrawn. The severity of these symptoms can range from mild, but tolerable, to severe and debilitating. It not only affects their health, but it also affects their everyday life. The problem typically starts gradually as the days become shorter in late summer or fall,

and peaks midwinter. Researchers believe these seasonal mood changes are caused by the decreased amount of daylight people are exposed to during the fall and winter months, and that sunlight acts as a signal that synchronizes our body’s circadian rhythm. When we do not receive that morning light signal, the winter blues may occur. Numerous studies have identified several ways that can help alleviate the symptoms caused by this sunlight deficiency. Here are six tips to help you deal with the winter blues.

1. GET MORE LIGHT. Get outside in the fall and winter during the day as much as possible. Just 15 minutes of sun on your face and hands two to three times per week is enough for many people.

For moderate to severe winter blues, some people may need to seek professional help. One option often used by health care professionals is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). A trained therapist can help a person develop behavioral tools to deal effectively with the winter blues. Success rates for CBT are high and the skills learned can be utilized whenever symptoms begin to appear. Winter blues can begin as early as August and may continue into April. If symptoms are severe, look to your doctor for help as mood changes can have a severe impact on your daily life.

Things You Should Leave Behind in the New Year

A LATTE-A-DAY Coffee, sodas, maybe that mid-morning snack. These small daily expenses may seem like a minimal hit to the bank account, but they can add up over time. To control spending, create a monthly budget for only these types of perks. This way you know exactly how much you have to spend on those daily extras without going over your planned budget.

YOUR OVERPRICED WIRELESS CONTRACT “Spend less money – save more,” was among the top six resolutions for respondents in 2015, according to Statista. This year, don’t get oversold on paying for more than you need. A PACKED CALENDAR Don’t start your New Year off playing catch up because you’ve already overscheduled yourself. Instead, slow down and allow appropriate time to complete tasks. This way you don’t feel overworked and you have time to stop and smell the roses. Allow time for buffers and schedule that much needed vacation time!

Don’t let this defense mechanism distract you from reaching your full potential. In 2016, get out and get ahead of tasks by doing a little at a time, rather than leaving it all until the last minute. You’ll be amazed how much you can accomplish when you make tomorrow, today.

WHAT

YOUR BODY tells me, darling!

Want to know what someone is thinking or if it’s a good time to ask your boss for a raise?

Chances are — without even speaking a word — the people you interact with every day have some sort of vibe on your mood and basic thoughts. How, you ask? Easily! By reading your body language. Body language is the process of communicating nonverbally through conscious or unconscious gestures and movements. It’s often referred to as the “unspoken” language. Sometimes you may be giving off an unintentional negative vibe with your body language. Whether you’re in a business or social setting (unless you’re real jerk), it’s important to know how to appear warm and open to make others feel comfortable in your presence. The art of reading body language is well documented and can take years to learn. However, knowing the basics can help almost anyone.

translate similarly. If more than one person is present in a group, look each person in the eye as you speak, slowly turning to face the next person and acknowledge him or her with eye contact as well. Continue on so that each person has felt your warm, trusting glance. Some suggest beginning with one person and moving clockwise around the group so that no one is missed, and so that you are not darting around, seemingly glaring at people.

Attention Span / Attitude Other people can tell what type of attitude you have by your attention span. If you quickly lose focus of the other person and what is being said, and if your attention span wanders, this shows through and makes you seem disinterested, bored and possibly even uncaring.

Attention to Direction If you sit or stand so that you are blocking another in the party, say someone is behind you, this can be interpreted as rude or thoughtless. So be sure to turn so that everyone is included in the conversation or angle of view, or turn gently, at ease and slowly, while talking, so that everyone is incorporated, recognized and involved in the conversation.

BODY LANGUAGE DC COMICS

The Smile

People like warm, genuine smiles. A smile is like a yawn — contagious — putting other parties at ease. Think of heartfelt warm-fuzzy thoughts, such as babies or your favorite pet, and smile.

The Eyes If you don’t look someone in the eyes while speaking, this can be interpreted as dishonesty or a shady personality. Likewise, shifting eye movement or rapid changing of focus/direction can

Arms Folded / Legs Crossed This can be seen as defensive or an end to the conversation. So have arms hang freely or hold a glass of water, a business card or note taking instruments while communicating with others. Be open with open arms. Note: If you need to cross legs, cross at your ankles and not your knees. Sitting tightly folded up says that you are closed to communications.

Head Shaking This is fairly accurate. If people are shaking their heads while you speak, they are in agreement. If they are shaking, “no,” disagreement reigns in their minds. Be mindful of your head movement and make sure it’s conveying appropriate agreement or disagreement.

MARDI GRAS Mambo Mambo Mambo Great selection of

Space / Distance On the whole, people like their own personal body space. Give people room and keep out of their space. Entering too close can be intrusive and viewed as aggressive.

The Body Lean Sitting or standing, leaning is viewed as interest. In other words, an interested listener leans toward the speaker, while still maintaining comfortable personal space.

Being savvy about body language is an essential tool to master when forming business or personal relationships. In addition to paying attention to your own unspoken language, you can use this knowledge to read others. Give it a try. You’ll be amazed at what you can learn.

Oh, and p.s. Take a tip from a modern day Wonder Woman. You think Oprah got where she is by slouching? ;-)

Molly Bernard Guidry A festive, fun loving soul with a kind heart and a never ending smile.

hen I first sat down with Molly, it was early December and she was already dressed in full Christmas attire — seasonally striped socks, colorful bracelets, a jingle bell Tee and earrings that mimicked classic Christmas ornaments jingling as she walked — never mind this was still weeks before Christmas. As it turns out, Molly is a holiday buff and dons Christmas attire every day starting December 1st. She decorates her home, office and even herself for every holiday or event. “I’m a child at heart…I still watch all the holiday movies with just as much excitement as I did when I was a kid,” says Molly. Molly’s story begins nearly 15 years ago when she meets and falls in love with Lafayette native Walter Guidry. The happy couple enjoys a traditional courtship and is married [Yes] between Christmas and New Years of 2005. Wedding colors? Yep, you guessed it — red and green!

“I’m a child at heart…I still watch all the holiday movies with just as much excitement as I did when I was a kid,” Lifelong friend Delia Walker remarks, “It’s so like Molly to get married during the happiest time of year—she’s so happy and jolly herself.” Life is good and the young couple begins to plan for the future…Fast forwarding almost two years, the Guidry’s learn they’re pregnant. Ecstatic with the news, Molly begins to prepare for motherhood. Little did she know, her strong religious faith and positive attitude would soon be put to the test. While pregnant, Molly learned that the child she was carrying had an extra chromosome. Her soon to be born baby girl would be born with Down Syndrome (DS). The baby she had waited so long to have would have special needs. She recalls, “At first, Walter and I were in shock. We were also a little scared because we didn’t know what the future held for us or our baby girl; we just knew it would be life changing… We quickly got past those thoughts and decided that we would be the best parents we could be because God chose us as her parents and God chose me as her mother.”

Ellie Grace Guidry was born in April of 2007. A fragile little girl at only 5 lbs. 4 oz., Ellie Grace came into this world with a heart condition that required a risky but successful surgery to correct. Although life has not been easy at times, “Little Ellie Grace” is now eight years old and is thriving as a third grader in the Lafayette Parish School System. Like many mothers, Molly describes her daughter as her world, saying “She only knows unconditional love, she has no other way of being. She absolutely loves with no conditions attached. She is a tremendous blessing.” She is indeed a blessing but also very blessed. Blessed not only because she has an extra chromosome and is able to love unconditionally — something most humans strive to do — but because she has Molly as her mother. Completely putting her life on hold forgoing her passions to paint, karaoke, and travel, Molly has dedicated herself to make sure Little Ellie Grace has the best life possible. Even before Ellie Grace was born, Molly “Little Ellie Grace” began learning as is now eight years much as she could about children with old and is thriving Down Syndrome. She as a third grader in also began getting the Lafayette Parish involved with the School System. Down Syndrome Association of Acadiana (DSAA) who helped further her education on the condition. Molly states, “Down Syndrome isn’t an ailment. Some people have blue eyes; Ellie Grace has Down Syndrome. Other than that, she is just like everyone else. She has feelings, friends, desires and aspirations.”

Employed by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) for the past 15 years, Guidry has worked as an Administrative Assistant in the Industrial Technology (ITEC) Department of the College of Engineering. For the past eight years, Molly has served as Media Coordinator for DSAA. She was very passionate when speaking of the organization, which is a model to organizations like it across the state. The Annual Buddy Walk is their biggest fundraiser and Molly organizes a team that has won for the past few years. In 2015, their team, “Ellie Grace’s Smiling Face” won Most Creative Team, Most Money Raised and Largest Team with 130 members. Molly was proud to announce that Ellie Grace walked the entire mile for the first time without riding in her wagon. In her typical selfless fashion, Molly didn’t take any credit for the team’s accomplishments saying, “Ellie Grace won three awards.” Truly, Molly is the reason the team is so successful, going above and beyond what is expected by creatively making t-shirts as well as developing a cadence for the team to recite while walking, motivating everyone on the team. Her enthusiasm for life, love of family and faith in God is infectious and inspiring. Her zest for life and child-like spirit brings her office environment to life. Employed by the University of Louisiana at Lafayette (ULL) for the past 15 years, Guidry works as an Administrative Assistant in the Industrial Technology (ITEC) Department of the College of Engineering. Self proclaimed Administrative Goddess, Molly expressed how much she loves helping the students, “I usually guide them throughout their college career and love hearing from them after they graduate. But, they all know Ms. Molly doesn’t play! They are required to be adults and I am very firm.” Despite (or maybe because of) her tough love, all the students love her and she is the go-to person. With all of her work responsibilities, she still finds time to decorate the office and dress the part for every holiday and event. Corrine Dupuy, a professor in the ITEC Department, praised Molly saying, “She has so much energy, it’s impressive to watch.

She’s upbeat and passionate about celebrating life. She’s also very spiritual, which I appreciate.” Corrine, having two adult DS children of her own, met Molly prior to working together at ULL, through DSAA. “I only wish I had as much energy as Molly! I told her to wait until Ellie Grace is 30 years old — she won’t have that much energy!” Corinne said with a laugh. Corinne isn’t the only fan of Molly’s in the workplace. Ahmed Khattab, Ph.D. began his ULL career right around the time Molly gave birth to Ellie Grace in 2007. He said she is not only the go-to person for the students but for the staff as well. He spoke very fondly of Molly, recalling that he took a liking to her right away, “I’m a good judge of character — it’s a talent of mine — and I knew right away that she was a good person. I still have the cigar she gave me when her daughter was born. It’s as old as my career here at ULL.”

Both Delia Walker and

Dr. Khattab, Associate Dean Corrine Dupuy said the same of Engineering, expresses that it’s strong faith in thing:“I don’t know how she their God that strengthens their friendship. He does it.”“I only wish I had and Molly, people of different faiths and her energy and optimism.” cultures, are the prime example of how God can bring people together, family to family. Her faith has always been a part of her life. One would think having a special needs child is the ultimate trial of faith, to which she dove right in with complete abandon. Little did she know that her faith would be tested again. In March of 2012, Molly was coming home from a Down Syndrome convention in Washington DC. During her connecting flight to Houston, her body started to swell, her head was hurting badly and she couldn’t speak. Not being able to communicate for the entire three hour flight, she thought surely she would die on the plane. “All I kept thinking was: I’m going to die on this plane and Ellie Grace needs me,” she recounted the experience. Once they landed, Molly stood up to make the connecting flight to Lafayette and collapsed. Paramedics diagnosed her with an allergic reaction and grounded her until the last flight of the day. She continued to swell and her head was in excruciating pain. Finally arriving home, after another day of agonizing pain, Molly took the advice of family members and went to the emergency room. After several tests, the doctor came in with long awaited

Despite their busy lives, this past summer the Guidrys welcomed a foreign exchange student from Japan into their home. When originally approached to take in the young girl, Maika Maeda, Molly wasn’t sure she could handle another responsibility. She and Walter prayed about it and asked God for signs, which he sent. She smiles when she talks about Maika, who is now a sophomore at Lafayette High School where she’ll continue until the end of the school year; at which time Maika will return to her Japanese homeland later this summer 2016. “The way I see it, she can teach us and we can teach her — she comes from a culture that is very different from ours. We are obviously a religious family, whereas Maika comes from an area that does not practice Christianity. She’s [Maika] a sweet, kind and smart young lady. We’re so happy to have her in our life,” says Molly.

news. He bluntly told her that she had a brain tumor, would need surgery, and then promptly walked out. Molly was shocked at his lack of bedside manner but her strong faith kept her positive. “They said the barometric pressure of the plane brought on the severe symptoms. I see it as a blessing because it could’ve gotten worse, had the tumor not been discovered.” The egg-sized tumor was non cancerous but still needed to be removed. On April 10, 2015, she underwent a three hour brain surgery, losing part of her eyesight in the process. During her one month stay in the hospital post-surgery, the doctor’s learned her brain was leaking spinal fluid. On May 4th, she underwent a second surgery to correct it. She showed me pictures and I noticed they had shaved

On April 10, 2015, she underwent a three hour brain surgery, losing part of her eyesight in the process. her entire head. When I expressed sympathy, she waved her hand and reassured me, “It’s just hair. It grew back. No problem. I’m here.” I asked how she dealt with the extreme stress of the brain tumor and the possibility that it may return. She replied, “Do I wish that I didn’t have it? Sure. But, I know that God put me through that for a reason. The reason hasn’t surfaced yet, but maybe it’ll show up — maybe I’m supposed to inspire someone else. I don’t know.” Molly hardly realizes how much she has and continues to inspire so many people throughout the community. Dr. Khattab recalls, “I was devastated when I learned of Molly’s brain tumor. I know that her daughter needs her and I was so worried. I told my wife that I would go to Molly and help lift her spirits to get through this, which I did the next day. Funny thing is, Molly ended up lifting ME up. She was the strong one. She had a huge smile on her face and told me everything was going to be alright. She seemed to have no fear and had 100% faith that God would take care of her. That inspired me then and still does to this day. When I’m having a hard time, I recall Molly’s strength and faith in that time of crisis.”

Keeping an optimistic outlook on life for someone who has been through so much is a puzzle to the people around her. Her friends describe her as well-mannered, simple and happy — someone who doesn’t stress and takes whatever life throws at her knowing that God will take care of her. Molly’s life is completely and selflessly dedicated to her daughter. A typical day starts out with several meltdowns from Ellie Grace that dissolve quickly. The Guidry household is lively with Ellie Grace roller skating indoors and wearing a different pair of shoes (often her mother’s) for each room in the house. Although Ellie has a meltdown to dress, eat and get on the bus, eventually she does all three things with a big smile. And Molly just rolls with it saying, “Sometimes we get up at 3:00 a.m. and tap dance. Once that girl decides to do something, there is no stopping her. She is going to do what she intends to do.” How Molly handles the ups and downs of everyday life while still maintaining her poise, grace and infectious smile, is beyond most people. She seems to take everything in stride, stating the secret to her happiness is her strong religious faith and support from her family and friends. Molly surely has her hands full but she makes time for everything and everyone. She takes care of the things she deems most important—God, family, work (in that order)— without complaint. When asked about how she envisions her future, she quickly responds, “I want Ellie Grace to be happy and treated fairly.” Just like Molly…to never think of herself.

She’s upbeat and passionate about celebrating life.

HOW WILL MY CHILD CHANGE between the ages of 10 and 14? By Savannah Ludwig

T

HROUGHOUT OUR LIVES

we grow and change, but during early adolescence the rate of change is especially evident.

We consider 10-year-olds to be children; we think of 14-year-olds as “almost adults.” We welcome the changes, but we also find them a little disturbing. When children are younger, it is easier to predict when a change might take place. But by early adolescence, the relationship between a child’s real age and developmental milestones grow weaker. Genes, families, friends, values and other forces in society can affect development.

PHYSICAL CHANGES As they enter puberty, young teens undergo a great many physical changes. Adolescents don’t begin puberty at the same age. For girls, it may take place anywhere from the age of 8 to 13; in boys, on average, it happens about two years later. This is the time period when students’ physical characteristics vary the most within their classes and among their friends. Early adolescence often brings with it new concerns about body image and appearance. Both girls and boys who never before gave 44 FACE | JANUARY 2016

much thought to their looks may suddenly spend hours primping, worrying and complaining — about being too short, too tall, too fat, too skinny or too pimply. Body parts may grow at different times and rates. Movement of their bodies requires coordination of body parts — and because these parts are of changing proportions — young adolescents may be clumsy and awkward in their physical activities. The rate at which physical growth and development takes place also can influence other parts of a young teen’s life. An 11-year-old girl who has already reached puberty will have different interests than a girl who does not do

so until she’s 14. Young teens who bloom very early or very late may have special concerns. Late bloomers (especially boys) may feel they can’t compete in sports with more physically developed classmates. Early bloomers (especially girls) may be pressured into adult situations before they are emotionally or mentally able to handle them. The combined effect of the age at the beginning of physical changes in puberty and the ways in which friends, classmates, family and the world around them respond to those changes can have long-lasting effects on an adolescent. Whatever the rate of growth, many young teens have an unrealistic view of themselves and need to be reassured.

Early adolescence often brings with it new concerns about body image and appearance.

EMOTIONAL CHANGES

Celebrating 20 Years

This age can be one of mood swings, sulking, short tempers and a request for privacy. Many young teens are very self conscious. And, because they are experiencing dramatic physical and emotional changes, they are often overly sensitive about themselves. At this age, young people start to think ahead — which allows them to worry about the future. Some may worry excessively about a number of things ranging from school performance to their own mortality. In addition to changes in the emotions that they feel, most young teens explore different ways to express their emotions. For example, a child who greeted friends and visitors with enthusiastic hugs may turn into a teen who gives these same people only a small wave or nod of the head. Similarly, hugs and kisses for a parent may be replaced with pulling away. It’s important to remember, though, that these are usually changes in ways of expressing feelings and not the actual feelings about friends, parents and family. Be on the lookout for excessive

These can suggest severe emotional problems. It takes time for young teens and their parents to adjust to all these changes. But the changes are also exciting, allowing a young person to see what they can be like in the future and to develop plans for becoming that person.

FAMILY MATTERS

STAYING INVOLVED In Your Teen’s School Activities By Savannah Ludwig

oung teens need you in their life more than they may admit (to you or themselves) — although they may want you present under different terms and conditions than they did previously. Some parents misread the signals that their children send and back off too soon, which can have an unintentional negative effect. Research shows that children of all ages do better in school when their parents are involved in their lives. There is no such thing as the perfect parent. However, a parent (or guardian) that has discipline and structure in their household — is compassionate, understanding and involved in their child’s life — is much more likely to raise a child with the same qualities. These time tested tips may help you and your child with their journey through high school.

HELP YOUR CHILD GET ORGANIZED. Many young teens are easily distracted. The amount of their school work and their extracurricular activities often increases at the same time they are going through a growth spurt, developing new relationships and trying to develop more independence. Young teens respond to these changes in varying ways, but many of them daydream, forget things, lose things and seem unaware of time. Some schools help students develop organizational skills. Others leave the task to you (the parent). Whatever the case, you can: GO OVER YOUR CHILD’S SCHEDULE TOGETHER to help evaluate if they have too much going on at once. Talk with them about setting priorities and dropping certain activities if necessary or rearranging the time of some of them. HELP THEM LEARN GOOD STUDY HABITS. Set a regular time or schedule for doing homework. Talk with them about their assignments. Make sure the teen understands what they’re supposed to do

and when assignments are to be turned in. Make sure they have a calendar to record assignments, as well as a backpack and homework folders in which to tuck assignments for safekeeping. HELP YOUR CHILD GET STARTED when they have to do research reports or other big assignments, perhaps by taking them to the library or helping them find sources of online information from appropriate Web sites.

MONITOR HOW WELL YOUR CHILD IS DOING in school. Report cards are one indication of how well your child is doing in school. But you also need to know how things are going in between report cards. For example, if your son is having trouble in math, find out when he has his next math test and when it will be returned to him. This allows you to address a problem before it mushrooms into something bigger. HELP YOUR CHILD TO AVOID LAST-MINUTE CRAMMING by working out a schedule of what they need to do to prepare for the test. PROVIDE AN ENVIRONMENT AT HOME that encourages learning and school activities. Provide a quiet time without TV and other distractions when homework assignments can be completed. If you live in a small or noisy household, try having all family members take part in a quiet activity during

noisy toddler outside or into another room to play. If distractions can’t be avoided, you may want to let your child complete assignments in the local library. ATTEND SCHOOL EVENTS. Go to sports events, attend back-to-school night, PTA meetings, concerts and awards events. Remember, though, that many young teens are often self-conscious and want parents to be present but in the background.

REMEMBER YOU ARE THERE TO HELP your teen learn to be independent so you shouldn’t act like a dictator. C

osmetic Enhancements LOOKING FOR A BETTER YOU? By Savannah Ludwig

The past decade has brought about tremendous advancements in cosmetic procedures and enhancements. Surgical, non-surgical, fillers, lasers, injectables, rejuvenation and body sculpting are just a few of the many procedures being performed around the world and throughout Southern Louisiana. With more and more adults in the US seeking cosmetic assistance for everything from mole or hair removal to complete body lifts, this multi-billion dollar a year industry continues to show double digit growth with no end in sight. While some will argue that any cosmetic procedure is a lesson in futility, studies show that even the most basic procedure can have a profound effect on one’s self-esteem and quality of life.

BE SMART – BE INFORMED If you’re contemplating a cosmetic procedure in the near future, there are a number of important things to consider before making a commitment. Do your homework on the subject and consider things such as cost, recovery time, long term effects, short term effects, possible complications/ risks, etc. If you’re still interested in moving forward, set up a consultation with a local expert who specializes in your desired procedure. Have a list of questions ready to discuss during your consultation. While in the office, observe the condition of the facility and the helpfulness of the staff; discuss the qualifications of the doctor or practitioner who will be performing the procedure in addition to the realistic expectations you’re looking to achieve. If you’re considering elective surgery, a good Cosmetic Surgeon will screen you as well to ensure you are in a healthy mental state prior to surgery. It is important to discuss your mental health with a professional. They can help you sort through any doubts you may have about surgery and if it is right for you and your body.

The consultation should be informative and leave you feeling confident in whatever decision you make. If you feel pressured to make a decision before you’re ready or if you don’t feel comfortable with the doctor, practitioner or staff — thank them for their time and leave!

WHAT’S TRENDING FOR 2016? Experts are anticipating more women will choose buttocks contouring, breast reduction or more proportionate implants for their body types. Lip, chin and neck enhancements are the new must have for women while men will be seeking to get their chest or eyelids done in 2016. Lasers, injectables, fillers and nonsurgical procedures will continue to be HOT for years to come.

WHAT THE EXPERTS SAY According to recent studies, the psychological aspect of receiving one or more cosmetic enhancement procedures can have a wide range of benefits, including a reduction in anxiety and social phobias along with improvements in goal attainment, life satisfaction, mental and physical health, and self-esteem. The study also noted that pre-procedure expectations matter when assessing the psychological well-being of patient post-procedure. If a patient had unrealistically high expectations of what the procedure would accomplish for them, they were more likely to be disappointed and wind up less happy than they were to begin with.

“South Louisiana is fortunate to have an incredible list of highly qualified doctors and practitioners…” Considering the above and placing your well-being first, if you’re looking for a better you and you’ve done your homework on the subject, a cosmetic procedure may be right for you. South Louisiana is fortunate to have an incredible list of highly qualified doctors and practitioners who specialize in the field of cosmetic enhancement. Make an informed decision and you’ll most likely be happy with the outcome. YOGA POSES FOR BEGINNERS In December’s issue, we introduced the health benefits of yoga. A lot of people are interested in practicing the art of yoga but are a bit intimidated because they don’t know where to start. I’ve put together some simple instructions and poses for beginners.

PREPARING FOR THE PRACTICE Decide how long you would like to practice. I recommend starting small, maybe 10 minutes and working your way up to 20 then 30, adding more poses as you go along. The following poses will occupy about ten minutes. Pick a place (indoors or outdoors) where you will not be disturbed. Use a mat or a non-slip surface. To clear your mind, close your eyes and focus on your breathing — filling your entire diaphragm with slow, long breaths and exhaling in the same manner, emptying your diaphragm. If your mind wanders, just bring your awareness back to your breath. 56 FACE | JANUARY 2016

EASY POSE (Sukhasana) Start by sitting in a simple, loose, cross-legged position making sure the sit bones of your pelvis are equally grounded into the mat. Bring awareness to your alignment by rolling your shoulders back to straighten your posture. Imagine a string above your head that pulls your spine, neck and head into alignment. You can either rest your hands on your thighs (palms face down or up), form a circle with your pointer fingers and thumbs, or bring your hands in front of your chest in prayer form. Close your eyes and take ten slow, deep breaths through your nose. Switch the positions of the legs and repeat for another ten breaths.

BRIDGE POSE (Setu Bandha Sarvangasan) Start by lying on your back, knees bent, feet flat on the floor and arms by your sides. Push into the ground with your hands and feet lifting your tailbone into your hips. Shoulders are still on the floor and you can clasp your hands together underneath your body for an extra stretch. Hold for five breaths. Unclasp hands and lower yourself slowly on an exhale. Repeat.

This is a personal journey practiced at your own skill level and you should consult your physician before starting any new exercise program. Practicing yoga will help you take a break from

Jewelie’s

the stress of the day, making time for yourself because you deserve it. You can also state an intention to meditate on during practice — such as “I am open” or “I love myself” or “I am healthy.” Your intention can include any area within yourself you’d like to work on or improve. Namaste.

MORE OF WHAT MATTERS...

CAT-COW (Chakravakasana) Get on all fours with a neutral spine (imagine a straight line from your tailbone through the top of your head). Hands should be directly under the shoulders and knees directly under the hips. Using slow, deliberate movements on the inhale, let your abdomen drop towards the floor while your head rolls up towards the sky. On the exhale, drop your head to the floor and curl your spine up towards the sky. Do this for at least ten breaths to massage and warm up your spine.

CHILD’S POSE (Balasana) Move from Cat-Cow to Child’s Pose by sitting back on your feet. Stretch your arms out above your head while pressing your forehead to the floor. Hold for at least ten breaths.

The BAKING TECHNIQUE FOR A CREASELESS, BEAUTIFUL FINISH By Madelyn Meaux

Many of us already know about the obsession of contouring but not many know about the process of baking. The baking process isn’t exactly new. Makeup artists have been using this technique for years to get that perfect highlight and finish on a client’s face.

58 FACE | JANUARY 2016

B

aking is an incredible way to set makeup and give your skin a creaseless, beautiful finish that can last all day. Ever since I tried this technique, there has not been one day where I do not do it. I have found that my skin is left with such an airbrushed look that lasts literally all day. FIRST, gather up your favorite foundation, concealer, and loose translucent or banana powder. Prime your face and apply your foundation as you normally do. There is no special way to do this. AFTER THAT, you will take your concealer and apply it under eyes and on forehead and chin. Most people use a concealer that is either one or a few shades lighter than their foundation to give a highlighted look to the areas applied.

ONCE YOU HAVE DONE THIS, you will take a tool (I used a cosmetic sponge — use whatever you like) and tap the powder onto the areas where you applied concealer. I use a generous amount of powder but you can use however much will work for you. LET THE POWDER SET for about 10 minutes. What I do to hurry up the process is do my eyebrows and sometimes depending on the amount of time I have, I will do my eye makeup as well while I wait. After the time is up, you will then want to take a brush and lightly sweep off the excess powder and see the transformation. Your skin will look phenomenal — a poreless, matte finish that everyone will awe over! About the author: Madelyn Meaux lives in Lafayette and has a passion for makeup. The “Baking” Technique is an edited excerpt from her beauty blog, which can be found at www.meauxbeauty.blogspot.com.

DOS AND DON’TS of

APPAREL By Kisha Kana

E

veryone knows that pre-planning will increase your chances of accomplishing goals. If exercise is part of your 2016 resolution, choosing the right workout clothes can help keep you motivated. Follow these suggestions to increase your chances of success.

Accept where you are on your journey to health and pick clothing that fits well for your body type.

DON’T BREAK THE BANK It’s tempting to believe that spending a fortune on workout clothes alone will keep you motivated. That newness will wear off and many women find themselves living in their yoga pants without actually doing yoga. To avoid this, analyze what you already own that is usable and add one to two new outfits. If you’re planning to lose weight, newly purchased items may not fit for long. You can keep yourself motivated by rewarding yourself with new gear as you reach workout milestones.

DO CHOOSE ACTIVITY APPROPRIATE CLOTHING Get the most out of your workout by wearing clothing designed specifically for your chosen activity. Decide ahead of time what activities you plan to do and shop accordingly. Running attire is made of different fabrics than yoga pants. Tights are designed for outdoor weather and are tighter fitting to ensure that your pants will stay up while running. Yoga pants allow for more flexibility. Same goes for footwear — choose the right shoes for your chosen activity.

DON’T WEAR YOUR EVERYDAY BRA

There are many local merchants and fitness centers in Acadiana that sell quality workout clothing.

60 FACE | JANUARY 2016

A sports bra is necessary. The fit should be firm, keeping the tatas in place to avoid uncomfortable bouncing and stretching of the ligaments. The bra should hold the whole breasts with no spillage. When running a finger under the band of the bra, you shouldn’t be able to pull more than an inch away from your chest. But, don’t confuse well fitted with restrictive — you should be able to breathe comfortably.

DO PAY ATTENTION TO MATERIALS Although cotton is known to be comfortable, it tends to absorb sweat, making clothing heavy on the body, and can be cold in the winter. Opt for breathable fabrics made of synthetic fibers that will take moisture away from your skin and allow it to evaporate.

DON’T CHOOSE FASHION OVER COMFORT Workout gear should make you feel good. Accept where you are on your journey to health and pick clothing that fits well for your body type. If you don’t, you run the risk of mishaps due to trying to “hide” your flaws in oversized clothing or being uncomfortable in too tight clothing. Buy what fits now — keeping in mind that you should be able to move around without the distraction of adjusting your clothing mid workout. The best outfits are the ones you never have to think about once they are on.

DO PREPARE During colder months, you may need to have layers that you can peel off as your body heat increases during the workout. With daylight savings time, you may be biking or running after work in the dark. Make sure you have reflective outfits for safety. Pay attention to laundering instructions when purchasing clothing. You’ll want to buy clothes that have the least upkeep as possible and will last the longest. There are many local merchants and fitness centers in Acadiana that sell quality workout clothing. Visit them to get personalized assistance with choosing the right apparel for you and your needs. faceacadiana.com | FACE 61

HOW TO ROCK THE HIGH-WAISTED LOOK

T

here are plenty of body types out there and not all fashion trends are a one size fits all. However, mostly everyone (with the

exception of the short, pear shaped ladies) can make the high-waisted look work for them. Here are a few tips to compliment your body when wearing high waist skirts, pants and shorts.

A supportive, push up bra is important, especially for well endowed women. You don’t want sagging because it will “close off” the space between the chest and belly button —making your torso appear non-existent.

64 FACE | JANUARY 2016

TUCKING SHIRTS IN is a must. When choosing a top, opt for one with thin material so that it isn’t bulking once tucked in.

On the other hand, if you’ve been dying to sport a

CROP TOP but are tummy shy, high waisted pants are the perfect opportunity to wear it with confidence.

Consider a SOLID

COLOR for both tops and

shorts making you appear taller. A skinny or wide belt helps seal the look together.

When choosing a BELT, go darker if you want to add width to a thin waist and lighter if you are trying to create that hour glass look.

Pants with a high waist should have room in the legs, bringing attention to YOUR

BUTT. The flowing look

of the flared legs are perfect for thick bottomed gals.

A high waisted SKIRT should fall no shorter than the knees for long legged women to avoid being “all legs.” For women with short legs, a shorter skirt will create the illusion of height.

Break out your favorite pair of HEELS…they are a must have when putting this look together. Flats will make the legs appear stumpy, which is the opposite effect that you’re going for. You want to be tall and confident when you strut this look!

Top Words Women Love to HATE Why is it that just hearing certain words can make a woman cringe?

#1 MOIST – 77% of the women polled

According to the Reader’s Digest, 500 women were asked what they considered to be the most unpleasant words in the English language. Here are their findings.

reported an extreme dislike of the word moist. Although it’s only a theory, the meaning of moist seems to be a factor, as women haters are also prone to dislike damp, wet, and sticky.

#2 SQUIRT –Roughly 2/3 of responds disliked the word squirt. With some of the same phonetic features as moist, it’s believed that the hard “t” at the end and its relation to being wet may have something to do with its high ranking.

#3 PANTIES – As a young girl, the word is not offensive as it simply describes girls’ underwear. However, as an adult, it begins to take on a more sexual connotation, leaving almost half of those surveyed commenting the word is too risqué for general conversation.

#4 CHUNKY – This word is hated because many women perceive it as insulting to women as it is sometimes used to describe personal appearance or one’s size. Others hate the word because of its similarity to funky.

#5 FLAP – 22% of the women polled hated the word flap. Although the real reason for this word’s dislike is unknown, some experts think the human body may be to blame since flap may call to mind skin flap. The report cited many more interesting hated words [most of which the editors of FACE would not print], which sparked huge discussions around our office; compelling us to hit the streets to see which words the women of Acadiana hated the most. The answers we received were sometimes awkward, a bit puzzling, and undoubtedly hilarious! At #1[not surprising], any word describing the hoo-ha.
