WELCOME to Lafayette LOUISIANA HISTORY & LIFE LESSONS

from the heart of CAJUN COUNTRY By Laurie J. James, MCD

QUICK HISTORY LESSON THOMAS JEFFERSON IS CREDITED with the greatest deal in U.S. history, the Louisiana Purchase, which he snagged for a mere $15 million from France in 1893. It included approximately 827,000 square miles of land west of the Mississippi River. Honoring the original French heritage, Louisiana is the only state in the U.S. governed by the Napoleonic Code (of Law). The other states are governed by Common Law.

HOW ACADIANA GOT

IT S NA M E

DO YOU NEED SOME GOOD VIBRATIONS? HOW ABOUT MUSIC that’ll put an infectious smile on your face and yearning for more because of its sound and unusual rhythm? If so, welcome to Lafayette! (We prefer you to pronounce us: laffy yet! Although we’re French in culture, we enjoy laughing so much that it has become our preferred pronunciation). Lafayette (originally Vermilionville) was recently named Happiest City in America by the Wall Street Journal’s Marketwatch.com. Whether you’ve lived here all your life or are visiting for the first time, here are some interesting eye-openers as you explore this one-of-a-kind, friendly, generous, and jovial community! 8 FACE APRIL 2019

OUR DISTINCT FRENCH-CANADIAN CULTURE

was brought down by the Acadians who were expelled from parts of Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick and eastern Quebec in the mid-1700’s during the British and French hostilities. That explains Acadian, but how did Acadiana come to fruition? KATC TV 3 was founded by the Acadian Television Corporation. In 1963, KATC received correspondence addressed to the Acadiana Television Corp. The lagniappe (extra) “a” at the caboose stuck. Yes, the term Acadiana was created via typo!

TOE-TAPPING MUSIC INFLUENCE MUSIC, FOOD, & CELEBRATIONS are at the forefront of any brochure gushing about Lafayette, and with good reason! We offer a diverse blend of Zydeco, Cajun, Creole, Rock and Roll, R&B-influenced grooves of swamp pop, homegrown rock, country, hip-hop derived from French Creoles, Acadians, Native Americans, European, African and Caribbean-influenced rhythms and song forms. A special shout out goes to our German-Jewish immigrants for importing diatonic accordions from Europe.

UNDENIABLE GAME-CHANGERS EDUCATIONAL CULTURE THE UNIVERSITY OF LOUISIANA AT LAFAYETTE (ULL) is the proud home of our Ragin’ Cajuns, a nickname reflective of the community. The ULL campus is famous for live alligators residing in Cypress Lake, a unique university landmark located behind the student union. Graduating seniors who order rings become part of a distinctive campus tradition. On the night before graduation ceremonies, members of the UL Lafayette’s Army ROTC escort these rings to Cypress Lake. There, the rings are loaded onto a custom-built, metal pirogue (boat) to spend the night on the water, guarded by students! ULL has been home to several award-winning faculty members, including John Kennedy Toole, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of A Confederacy of Dunces; Ernest J. Gaines, National Book Critics Circle Award-winner for A Lesson Before Dying; and Burton Raffel, noted for his translation of Beowulf and Miguel de Cervantes's Don Quixote.

Cypress Lake at ULL

LAFAYETTE HAS MADE AN INDELIBLE MARK throughout history, redefining entire industries. Here are several who have left important legacies: Famous architect A. Hays Town grew up in Lafayette and was heavily influenced by the Spanish, French and Creole history of Louisiana. His top architectural designs are celebrated throughout the country. Henri Bendel founded the famous upscale women’s fashions company bearing his name in New York City, which remained in business for more than 100 years. Marc Breaux made memorable movie musical history by choreographing Mary Poppins, The Sound of Music and Chitty Chitty Bang Bang on the big screen. Political activist, Beth Rickey diligently and successfully exposed (Ku Klux Klan leader) David Duke’s neo-Nazi connections. The first true celebrity makeup artist was Kevyn Aucoin, who transcended the cosmetics industry by perfecting and sharing his makeup artistry. He worked with hundreds of celebrities (including Whitney Houston, Cher, Janet Jackson, Tina Turner, and Lisa Marie Presley) whom he transformed through the art of makeup. Floyd Sonnier is an internationally acclaimed

pen-and-ink Cajun artist who specialized in drawings depicting Cajun culture, lifestyle, and family.

This merely scratches the surface of the charm and history that Lafayette offers. Enjoy our Festival International while spending some quality time here, and you’ll never want to leave!

FAMOUS HOMEGROWN TALENT From Grammy-Winning musicians to iconic television characters to well-respected athletes, Lafayette is home to a veritable plethora of talented people, including: Lauren Daigle — recent Grammy Award Winner; Kathleen Babineaux Blanco (Louisiana’s first female Governor, 2004–2008); Mikie Mahtook (MLB Detroit Tigers Outfielder); R&B Singer Cupid ("Cupid Shuffle"); Keith Thibodeaux (‘Little Ricky’ from I Love Lucy ); World Title Gymnast, Leigh Hennessy (holds record for winning most U.S. national women’s trampoline championships); Ron Guidry (aka Louisiana Lightning, a left-handed pitcher with New York Yankees & Cy Young Award Winner); Singer/Guitarist MacKenzie Bourg (garnered critical acclaim through two reality talent shows — The Voice AND American Idol); Tennis Professional, Chanda Rubin (earned #6 in world ranking).

PRAYER LIFE WE WORK HARD, WE PLAY HARD, AND WE PRAY HARD! Nearly 50% of residents in Lafayette are Catholic. Going back in history, Louisiana was officially Roman Catholic under both France and Spain’s rule. The boundaries dividing the territories generally coincided with church parishes. In 1807, the territorial legislature officially adopted the ecclesiastical term. That’s why we use the term “parish” to coincide with the largely Catholic population, while other states use the term “county”.

Laurie ( Jankower ) James grew up in Lafayette. As a small-business owner (33 + years – credentialed résumé writer, career coach, motivational speaker), she is passionate about God, Kenny (her husband), maintaining University of Louisiana at Lafayette ® cULture, building and sustaining meaningful relationships, music, traveling, genealogy, and keeping Acadiana thriving. HESE ARE ENTERTAINMENT INDUSTRY CLICHES that would accurately describe the small collective of people who organize

and execute Lafayette’s annual blockbuster event, Festival International de Louisiane. They are also superlatives none of the eight staff members of the non-profit organization of the same name would attribute to themselves, but would instead attribute to their colleagues. Part of the mystique of Festival International is the diligent work done behind-the-scenes so that the festival’s fun feels organic and shared by all. Proverbial pats-on-the-back are not the driving force — love for “Festival” is. “It’s definitely not a normal job.” said Emilie Blakewood, Lafayette native and Festival’s Marché and Food Coordinator. “We’re all here year-round planning this one event for everyone in Lafayette, and then we have that one week out of the year where we’re going through so much together in such a small amount of time — and we’re all stronger together because of that. We are like family. We’re all truly here for each other, no matter what.

of life when not working with Festival, but continually work beyond their job descriptions to produce one of the largest, ticketless musical, artistic and cultural exchanges in the country. The painstaking levels of expertise and innovation in curating, planning, installing infrastructure, and executing required to host a party for 300,000 of “your closest friends,” is increasingly impressive. These seven wonder-women of Festival International, along with Festival’s executive director and board of directors, are responsible for hosting Lafayette’s largest party of the year — a now 33-year tradition. Everyone knows her or his role, and performs it year round. Each year, Festival proudly releases a commemorative pin for festival fashion and fundraising alike. During a staff picture for the cover of this hallowed edition of FACE, it was decided for each member to sport the pin from their first Festival as employees.

GAELLE MASSART welcomes guests to the 2019 Pin & Poster Reveal.

LISA STAFFORD waits all year to see the lineup she built come to life.

Programming Director Lisa Stafford, also a Lafayette native, had to search the office archive for the 1999 edition of the pin for hers. She has scouted, booked, contracted and been an artist liaison for roughly 3,000 acts during her 20 years. Her work has given her what she termed a “fulfilling life,” including being awarded such prestige as being named “Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres” [Knight of the Order of Arts and Letters], a prestigious distinction awarded under the jurisdiction of the office of the French Minister of Culture and Communication. Production Director Diane Harris pulled a pin from 2001 and is the second longesttenured staff member. She joined Festival fortuitously when there was an opening and she had retired from a long-time position as assistant production coordinator at the Cajundome, where she really honed her expertise in large-scale production. Nineteen years later and she calls Stafford “family.” Blakewood also mentioned themes of family and has been with Festival International for seven years, after an internship under Harris expanded into a job, and donned a 2015 pin.

SPECIAL FESTIVAL INTERNATIONAL ISSUE

WITH AN UNDERLYING SENSE OF WARMTH AND PRIDE, IT’S AT ONCE EASY TO OVERLOOK AND PLAIN TO SEE THE THEME WITHIN THE OFFICE — THAT BESIDES EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR SCOTT FEEHAN, IT’S ENTIRELY COMPOSED OF WOMEN.

Marketing Coordinator Carly Viator’s superpowers include, but are not limited to, gathering the erstwhile unpublicized staff for said picture and then promoting a campaign using it. She and Belgium born-and-bred Gaelle Massart, or as her job-title aptly defines her as, le “Couteau Suisse,” [the Swiss knife], only had to search the archive back as far as 2018 for their first pins. The pair each said they began working for Festival because of their love for the event. With more than 20 years of experience prior to and including her work with Festival, Angie Verret has helped the organization tighten its books since 2017. There was a period of the organization’s history in the middle of this decade, before current staffing, where Festival International’s financial viability was called into question. Verret’s unseen expertise provides the back-end due diligence necessary for Candace Gulotta-Haggart, development director since 2015, to motivate the community and local businesses and officials to support and sponsor the festival and its maturation. This mostly unheralded industry “Dream Team,” are highly specialized in their areas of expertise and almost each is a department of one. Yet, each are also well-versed in a plethora of disciplines and fields, understand that throwing a gathering this large will almost invariably require they summon superhero-type resolve to accomplish things outside of their job descriptions.

IT ISN’T MAGIC Collectible Festival International posters, quilts, album covers and artwork adorn the walls in what was once Downtown Lafayette’s bus station, and is now Festival International’s home for the third year. The building’s layout, geography and history lend to the sense of community in-office. The small foyer also serves as a quiet workspace, a meeting and conference space, a food-and-alcohol tasting

and judging buffet and live music concert-series recording venue. The work space has a modern flow, offices have walls but lack doors, and almost all staff and interns are within eyesight or earshot. The work environment oscillates from pensive and productive, to joyous and jubilant and back to disciplined and determined all in one afternoon. With an underlying sense of warmth and pride, it’s at once easy to overlook and plain to see the theme within the office — that besides Executive Director Scott Feehan, it’s entirely composed of women. “You’re asking me how it is to work with all these women?” posed Feehan, through laughter following a joke from a staff member, “Just observe.” Camaraderie displayed throughout the day is genuine and palpable, but the office itself really serves as a “storefront” for Festival. The real work never stops. Heavy-lifting is a responsibility shared by all. Intra-office messaging, edits and emails may trickle, sprinkle or flood inboxes and alert notices into the night. Feehan has adapted a theme to convey how hard this team works to host Festival: “It isn’t magic — it’s just people.” Lisa Stafford’s and Diane Harris’ involvement with Festival predates Feehan’s first volunteer shift in 2009, his first year on the board of directors in 2010 and, of course, his installation as executive in 2015. “Lisa and Diane,” Feehan said, “have been with Festival for 20 and 18 years, respectively. They have been through many ups and downs with this organization, [and] have given their hearts and souls to this organization longer than anybody. Without them, Festival definitely would not be what it is today. I could go on and on about how incredible they are.”

Lisa Stafford

When not finalizing contracts and securing visas for the current Festival lineup, the sounds of Stafford willingly fielding pitches for potential future artists or diving into the depths of international music herself, might permeate the office. All artists’ accommodations, hospitality and transportation is under her purview.

Nearly

200 arts and crafts vendors and 30 food vendors

Stafford claims after 20 years in the business, “she doesn’t get star-struck,” but that little memories that stay with her are moments like shared car rides with the likes of Aaron Neville and Bonnie Raitt to or from Festival. Diane Harris, a native of Bangkok, Thailand, and a selfdescribed “Army Brat” came to Lafayette by different routes than Stafford, but to Festival from a similar route. Her love for Festival [she and her husband, Ashley Harris, shared their first kiss at Festival], coupled with her experience in production at Cajundome, led her to also work the production for Festival. She recalled the moment where she first caught the attention of Festival’s then-staff. There was a problem at one of the stages, and her response was cool, calm and collected amidst chaos. She said, “calm down and tell me what you need.” Her next phrase: “I got it.”

Diane Harris

The feeling that no challenge is too large or diverse for Harris is immutable. With a steady smile and wardrobe typically consisting of a dress or skirt and heels, her dynamic presence is immediately felt. All logistics for the infrastructure of stages, crowd-control, spacing, equipment and civil servants are part of her department, and she has accumulated an impressive cache of knowledge that serves as a complete guide for standard operating procedures and systems within Festival. Emilie Blakewood began her involvement with Festival in the same avenue, as Harris’ intern, but over time and with the desired expansion of Festival, showed her worth as invaluable to the team and is now on staff as the vendor coordinator of the Marché and Food markets — or the arts, tastes and commerce of Festival.

Emilie Blakewood

“I would work during Mardi Gras,” said Blakewood of her work experience before joining the team, “so that I could request off and come to Festival.” Blakewood has also performed grant writing for Festival, but her main responsibilities include whittling down a field of applicants for artists, artisans and food vendors to a “small” selection of nearly 200 arts and crafts vendors and 30

food vendors — then she has to execute the implementation. The process takes time and tedious thought to curate such a carefully crafted selection. “People don’t realize that,” Blakewood said, regarding the unseen and unsung mystery of festival production, “we are here year round. It takes a full year to plan.” Part of that year round effort includes marketing every aspect of Festival to the community so they remain informed and involved. Subtly and deftly displaying a natural enthusiasm for people, music, media and marketing, Carly Viator’s virtues serve to carry her through repeated 4 a.m. wake-up calls for TV and radio morning shows. “From there, I usually sprint back to my computer or into a meeting,” explained Viator, the Marketing Coordinator for Festival.

Carly Viator

As a designer and “camera lady”, a bulk of the advertising is created in-house by Viator as well. All of this occurs with a steady stream of inter and intra-office and company edits and deadlines bouncing in email inboxes like excited-state electrons. "The workflow for us all is very fast-forward,” said Viator, “but when you are putting so much time in for something you love, it doesn't feel like work. We know our cause is a good one and it'll all be worth it in April.” Viator said sarcasm carries the team through the hard work and long days. Her work also includes aligning current and upcoming campaigns with Development Director Candace Gulotta-Haggart. Candace Gulotta-Haggart and Feehan started work at Festival the same day. They were both new directors in new positions who had not met. Now, their offices are next to each other and together they spearhead the festival’s larger vision. Her work ethic is so intense, she has been known to workout in said office on her lunch breaks. Primarily, though, Gulotta-Haggart spends her time ensuring that Festival’s relationship with the community’s people and businesses continues to intertwine. This is one of the largest factors in keeping Festival ticketless.

CELEBRATING Louisiana's culture, arts, and community

SPONSORSHIP AND DONORSHIP COMPRISES ABOUT HALF OF FESTIVAL’S $1.7 MILLION ANNUAL BUDGET.

From volunteers and Festival “Amis”, to donors and sponsors, and to Rain Angels’ donors who cover the cost of the festival’s rain insurance, if these contributions are not secured annually, then the organization’s finances would be dire annually. Sponsorship and donorship comprises about half of Festival’s $1.7 million annual budget. A native of Plaquemine, La., Gulotta-Haggart has worked in production for the film industry, and booking for bands in the music industry. MTV and HBO are among her list of employers and production credits, but she left entertainment and began working in the business of organizational communication and meetings. After five years in that complex field, she decided to meld the two with an opportunity at Festival.

Candace Gulotta-Haggart

“I found an opportunity to work in the music industry again as an adult” Gulotta-Haggart said, “and stay local with my daughter and be a part [of] and get involved with the community. It was a no brainer to join the Festival team.” “I probably treat them too much like they’re my family,” Gulotta-Haggart said wryly. If Festival’s finances are of concern to Feehan and Gulotta-Haggart, then they are paramount to bookkeeper Angie Verret. A proud married mother of three and grandmother of three, Verret is also a Lafayette native. She has been with the festival since 2017 — just in time to assist ushering in eras of growth, accounting and reporting reconciliations and the most major change — Festival’s currency system from tickets to digital RFID wristbands.

Angie Verret

“My role,” said Verret, “is to make sure all accounting is done properly and paid properly — you know, the ins and outs of accounting and the reporting.” Every team has someone who ties things together and encompasses the team’s spirit, mission and essence all in one, or has a catch-all set of strengths and skills. Sometimes they are referred to as a “wild card,” “jack of all trades,”

or a “swiss-army knife.” Festival’s version of this irreplaceable heroine is neither Swiss, nor is English her first language. Belgium born-and-bred, Gaelle Massart, or, “Couteau Suisse” as she has come to be known by her job title, is that person. Within the same hour, she could send off a proofed design for production, receive a shipment of Festival-logo emblazoned merchandise and then join the film crew for a live concert shoot. All in a day’s work, for Massart.

Gaelle Massart

These women, and the greater Festival team, are a collection of some of the most adroit, intelligent, caring and dynamic people in our community, but they prefer to stay as out of the spotlight as possible. Choosing to let the manifestation of hard work be reflected by public joy is not glamorous work, but it IS a labor of love. To a woman, they credited the tireless work of the Festival Board of Directors, and other team and community members. “We all have our own personalities,” said Feehan, “and they somehow come together into something really fun. We get to work together all year on this thing we call Festival, then see the look of pure joy on thousands of peoples’ faces the week of. To be able to work with this incredible team, have a blast and then put on an event as amazing as Festival is — I just can't imagine anything better.”

Scott Feehan

“The future is female,” can sometimes misrepresent the entire truth. The past, present and future have been, are and will be female, in perpetuity. It has always been so, since time immemorial. There can be little room for misrepresentation or doubt, however, in saying, that Blakewood’s subtly qualifying words might soon reverberate through multiple strata of society — “It might help,” if the future is female, and we, and Festival International de Louisiane, would be in great, festive hands.

Tank and the Bangas

April 26 Tarriona “Tank” Ball | Hometown: New Orleans, Louisiana

C

OMING FROM NEW ORLEANS, Tank and the Bangas are surrounded by plenty of grand musical traditions. And this fivepiece group has a rare knack for combining various musical styles — fiery soul, deft hip-hop, deep-groove R&B, and subtle jazz — into one dazzling, cohesive whole that evokes the scope of New Orleans music while retaining a distinctive feel all its own. “It’s music that can’t really be put in a box,” says singer and poet Tarriona “Tank” Ball. She fronts the band with vivid charisma that helped Tank and the Bangas win NPR’s 2017 Tiny Desk Concert Contest — a feat that ultimately led to the band signing with Verve Records. What started as a loose collaboration at an open-mic night in 2011 has grown into a mesmerizing musical force that’s only picking up speed. After a featured set at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival early in the band’s career, the musicians built a reputation outside their hometown by grinding it out on the road and honing their live show, all the while converting audiences into passionate fans and garnering critical acclaim, from The New Orleans Advocate to The New York Times. “It made us work hard,” Ball says of playing Jazz Fest. “It made us want to feel deserving of it.” Their hard work is paying off: The Huffington Post says Tank and the Bangas defy description onstage, adding, “It’s music that you have to experience.” The experience is subject to change from one night to the next.

The Daiquiri Queens

April 27 Hometown: Lafayette, Louisiana

S

INCE DEBUTING AT THE 2017 BLACKPOT FESTIVAl, The Daiquiri Queens have been making a splash on the Cajun music scene. With haunting vocal harmonies, twin fiddle breakdowns and driving French accordion, this female fronted group brings a new and refreshing sound to an often male-dominated genre. Formed out of old friendships and a deep appreciation for the music and culture, they play dancehall era two-steps and waltzes, classic country duets, honky-tonk swingers and old French ballads with a homespun and energizing approach. The Daiquiri Queens are Jamie Lynn Fontenot on fiddle, guitar and vocals, Miriam McCracken on guitar and vocals, Sabra Guzmán on upright bass, John Dowden on accordion and fiddle, Tysman Charpentier on fiddle, and Chelsea Moosekian on drums and t’fer. They have performed at The Blackpot Festival, Festivals Acadians et Créoles, and The Abita Springs Busker’s Festival. “If you’re a traditionalist with an ear for Cajun Music, you need to add the Daiquiri Queens to your must see band list,” says publisher and musician Flint Zerangue, Sr. “These ladies [and two guys] will have you running for the dance floor.”

April 26 • 8:30 pm • Friday SCÈNE LABORDE EARLES LAW FIRM – FAIS DO DO MANY MUSICIANS CLAIM THAT THEY “GREW UP IN THE CHURCH,” but for Robert Randolph that is literally the case. The renowned pedal steel guitarist, vocalist and songwriter led such a cloistered childhood and adolescence that he heard no secular music while growing up. If it wasn’t being played inside of the House of God Church in Orange, New Jersey — quite often by Robert and members of his own family, who upheld a long but little known gospel music tradition called sacred steel — Randolph simply didn’t know it existed. Which makes it all the more remarkable that the leader of Robert Randolph and the Family Band — whose label debut for Sony Masterworks, Got Soul — is today an inspiration to the likes of Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana and Derek Trucks, all of whom have played with him and studied his technique. It wasn’t until he was out of his teens that Randolph broke away from the confines of his social and musical conditioning and discovered rock, funk, soul, jazz and the jam band scene, soon forging his own sound by fusing elements of those genres. Once Randolph began to discover other forms of music, he saw how they were all connected, and was eager to find his own place. “All music is related. Gospel is the same as blues,” he says. “The only thing that changes is in hardcore gospel people are singing about God and Jesus and in the blues people are singing about ‘my baby left me’ and whiskey." With a huge following of music lovers and over 2 million video views, Robert Randolph and The Family Band are sure to leave a great impression as they close out Festival 2019 on Sunday. 36 FACE APRIL 2019
