How to Say No

F R E E LY

S

aying no to requests can be difficult if you like to please. You want people to approve of you and don’t want to offend them. However, there are times when you would prefer to politely refuse their demands. Further, you have a niggling feeling that it’s your right to choose how you spend your time and that you shouldn’t need to explain; making excuses as to why you don’t want to do their bidding. The notion that your time is being encroached upon makes you resentful, burns positive energy, and leaves you drained. If you knew how to say no freely, you could spend time as you wished, and when you did give time away, you would do so with a happy heart. Saying no means you are respectful of your feelings in the moment. Rather than saying yes and being annoyed about having done so, you say that you would rather not do as asked. Informing someone that you prefer not to agree with a request may seem harsh—shocking, even. You live in a society where admitting you have personal needs you want to fulfill before fulfilling those of others is frowned upon. Nonetheless, going against your own wishes to meet unwanted demands leaves a sour taste in your mouth; negativity builds and you are unable to give freely. When you say no, without making up excuses or apologizing, you are empowered because you have been honest. There are no lies to continue, since you haven’t pretended you need to be somewhere else or do something more important. Additionally, you gain confidence when you claim your space and time as your own instead of giving it away.

When you say no, without making up excuses or apologizing, you are empowered because you have been honest.

20 FACE | MARCH 2016

Taking that step—saying no without blushing or fumbling to remove unease—requires steadiness and poise. You have to deliver your answer to the request with a calm, even tone that cannot be mistaken for displeasure.

After all, you are not upset about having been asked to do something. You merely want to turn down the request in an easy way. In addition, it’s best not to make promises you don’t want to keep. Blurting out that you will do this or that on another occasion, when you don’t want to, won’t help your cause. Saying what you want clearly and accurately will allow you to experience relief instead of discomfort. The experience of wanting to say no, but not wanting to at the same time, stems from fear of being judged and letting people down. Truly, though, you let people down and leave yourself open to harsh judgment when you say yes unwillingly. If you resentfully carry out a demand made by someone your energy is negative, and underneath their satisfaction at having Saying no means you their needs met, people are respectful of your have a sneaking suspicion feelings in the moment. that all is not well with you. They know you haven’t given freely and this makes them feel guilty. Secretly, they not only feel bad about themselves, but they also feel bad about you not having been openhearted as you carried out their wishes. The thought that life would have been more pleasant if you had enjoyed doing the request crosses their mind. The result of the transaction is dissatisfaction and disappointment and no one is completely satisfied. Occasionally, someone may be blind to your resentment, but the outcome is equally negative as they feel free to make more requests on other occasions. You become a doormat on which they wipe their feet, imagining that you are enjoying the process while you inwardly groan.

HEALTHY LIVING

By Daphne Olivier

What are they? Microbes are tiny organisms—too tiny to see without a microscope, yet they are abundant on Earth. They live everywhere—in air, soil, rock, and water. Some live happily in searing heat, while others thrive in freezing cold. Some microbes need oxygen to live, but others do not.

about 10 trillion microbes living in it, which is 10 times more than the cells on the rest of the body. So that begs the question—Are you more human or microbe? These microbes—a combination of bacteria, viruses, yeast, and protozoa—are critical for numerous positive interactions in the body such as decreasing inflammation, aiding with digestion, and making vitamins for our body’s use. The understanding of the interaction between our body and this microbial community is in its infancy. However, we do know that supporting these microbes is in our best interest. One way to support the microbes in our gut is by regularly consuming probiotic rich foods. The most common one in our culture is yogurt (IF it has “live active cultures”). However, now more than ever we have access to a variety of cultured or fermented foods such as traditionally

22 FACE | MARCH 2016

prepared sauerkraut, kimchi, or miso. There is also a plethora of beverages available, with many grocers and artisans selling kombucha, kefir, and even various probiotic “sodas.” While these foods and drinks cannot compensate for a poor diet, the addition of these foods are an easy way to support the friendly “other” lifeforms with which we share our human body. Much like the way the plant, animal, and microbial symbiotic existence in forests and jungles are all integrated in a cycle, so are our digestive systems and the 10 trillion microbes we share it with.

COPING WITH PREMENSTRUAL DYSPHORIC DISORDER SOME MEDICAL EXPERTS

Approximately 3-9%

underestimate the impact that conditions like PMS and Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) can have on a woman. Yet, any woman who suffers from PMDD knows that there is nothing trivial about it. PMDD is a severe form of PMS that can interfere with a woman’s daily life. There are physical symptoms such as breast tenderness and bloating. However, the worst symptoms of the condition are psychological. Women with PMDD are faced with anxiety and depression, along with anger and irritability that is very difficult to control. These symptoms can cause problems with romantic and family relationships, and cause a negative impact on the sufferer’s quality of life. Approximately 3-9% of American women suffer from PMDD, according to the American Psychology Association. Many women who suffer from PMDD mistakenly believe that it is something that they simply have to learn to live with, but that isn’t true. There are many treatments available to treat Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder so that the symptoms are less severe. Here are a few tips on relieving symptoms.

of American women suffer from PMDD

CHANGE YOUR LIFESTYLE A few simple lifestyle changes can do wonders for some women when it comes to controlling the symptoms of PMDD. For instance, regular exercise and a healthy diet can be very helpful when it comes to easing the physical and psychological effects of this disorder. Nutritional supplements such as calcium and Evening Primrose capsules can also prove very effective. It is a good idea to avoid alcohol and caffeine while suffering the symptoms of PMDD. Some women find that avoiding certain stressors helps them to avoid the anxiety associated with the condition. Therefore it is a good idea to try and avoid those situations you know are going to make you feel angry or irritable. Meditation is purported to help PMDD sufferers manage feelings of anger and irritability, too.

COMMUNICATE PMDD sufferers often have problems in their relationships with others. It is therefore a good idea to explain to friends and loved ones what PMDD is, and the kind of impact it has on you. If loved ones know that the anger and

irritability you exhibit have a medical cause, they will be less likely to take things personally. Furthermore when friends and family members are aware of your condition, they are in a better position to help you cope with it.

SEE YOUR DOCTOR There are medicines available that help to treat the symptoms of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder. For instance, doctors sometimes prescribe oral contraceptives to treat PMDD. Oral contraceptives stop ovulation and the associated hormonal fluctuations. Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitors, which are a kind of antidepressant medication, can also help with PMDD. They ease the symptoms of anger, anxiety and depression that many PMDD sufferers experience. To find out what medications might help you to manage your PMDD symptoms, make an appointment with your doctor. PMDD affects the way you live. If you haven’t been properly diagnosed, see a physician to discuss your concerns. Taking action now can help with the relief of your condition. Faceacadiana.com | FACE 23

GET ORGANIZED

Simple Tips To COMPLETE A CLOSET MAKEOVER

(Family Features) It’s that time of year when you think about getting organized for a fresh new start. However, how many times have you thought about finally clearing out your closet, decided it’s just too overwhelming, and simply shut the door only to think about it later? According to ClosetMaid, once you make a commitment, you need a plan of action. Get going with these tips from Barbara Reich, a professional organizer. Start by determining your overall goal. Are you simply organizing what you have or do you need to purge unused items? Get rid of things you don’t need or wear. For tips on revamping your wardrobe, see this month’s article on page 58, “Wardrobe Makeover.” Once you’ve determined just how much stuff you’ll have to organize, it’s time to consider what systems will best fit your space and needs. A do-it-yourself closet organizer product, such as ClosetMaid ShelfTrack, is affordable, easy to install and adjustable, making it simple to create a customized design. Accessories, such as drawers and shoe shelves, help personalize the space, while fabric bins are perfect for storing handbags and other smaller items.

Before you decide exactly which pieces you need, sketch out your plan on paper or use an online design tool. ClosetMaid’s DIY Design Tool even provides a parts list to help ensure you buy the right pieces for your design. You may also find it helpful to make a categorized list of all the items you need to store and mark them off as you identify the right storage products for your space. Once you install your new system, the fun really begins. Start by hanging as much as possible; this makes it easier to see what you have. Group and place like things together by category, such as pants, skirts, tops, etc., then within each category, group by season and by color. Take advantage of prime real estate by positioning the things you wear most often in the place that is most accessible and easiest to reach. Once you have everything hung and stored in its proper place, congratulate yourself on having the closet makeover checked off your list. However, to continue enjoying your newfound organization, you must be vigilant about keeping the space organized. Have a plan in mind when you purchase new things. Ask yourself if you really need the item and determine what you can discard to make room.

HOME

“WE’VE NEVER HAD A PROBLEM WITH…” If you’re looking for a quick sale, you may be tempted to tell a few little white lies such as… No, the dog next door never barks at night… We’ve never had a problem with the Renter next door. No matter how insignificant they might seem—get caught in a lie here and you might wind up in court.

“WE ALWAYS WANTED TO FIX/RENOVATE THAT, BUT…”

THINGS YOU SHOULD NEVER SAY When You’re Selling Your Home

Y

ou know that expression about loose lips sinking ships? It holds true for selling your home, as well. Louisiana law dictates a large amount of information that sellers have to disclose to potential buyers—such as if your home has lead paint or is located in a flood zone. But there’s a lot more information that you might inadvertently volunteer when you would be truly better off keeping your mouth strategically shut. Hopefully, you’ve chosen an experienced Realtor® to sell your home and hopefully you’ve been advised to leave your house while your home is being shown to prospective buyers accompanied by an agent. However, should you find yourself in a position where you do have to speak directly with a buyer or their agent, there are some things that should never be uttered. Doing so could, at best, prolong the sale of your house or—at worst, land you in court as a defendant.

“IT’S BEEN ON THE MARKET FOR X…” Don’t discuss how long the home has been on the market. This info is available to the buyer’s agent on the MLS (Multi-Listing Service) report. Bringing it up—especially if the home has been on the market longer than the average home in your area—can send sellers the wrong message… Like what’s wrong with it? 26 FACE | MARCH 2016

We always thought about knocking this wall down and opening the space for more light. Or, we planned on renovating this bathroom but ran out of cash… Mum’s the word when it comes to fixes you intended to address. Nobody cares about good intentions. When sellers point out things they might change, this only alerts the buyer of more upcoming costs for them. The buyers may not even want to knock down that wall or redo the bathroom. So why plant those Mum’s the word when it comes to fixes you intended to address. ideas in their head?

“WE SPENT A TON OF MONEY ON X, Y, AND Z” Just because you love the Brazilian wood flooring you installed throughout the first floor, that doesn’t mean prospective buyers will be willing to shell out for it. Buyers don’t care if you spent $10,000 or $100,000 on your kitchen. They are only going to offer what they feel the home is worth in relation to area comparable sales and no mortgage company is going to lend more than the house is worth, so save your breath. All of the unique features of your home should be listed on the Home Flyer and MLS. Less is more when dealing with buyers and their agent. The best thing you can do is allow your agent to speak for you as he/she is professionally trained in the art of selling homes.

MONEY

The average U.S. household carries just over $15,000 of credit card debt, which isn’t a bad thing when managed properly.

USING A BALANCE TRANSFER TO BECOME

(BPT) – If you’re carrying a balance on your credit card, don’t worry—most Americans are. In fact, the average U.S. household carries just over $15,000 of credit card debt, which isn’t a bad thing when managed properly. Let’s look at the big picture.

DEBT FREE

You most likely have more than one credit card. Your first card is from your college days, and the second one you picked up because it had travel rewards. After a few years of properly budgeting your finances and making payments on time, you’ve improved your credit score quite a bit. That first card you got in college with the high interest rate no longer makes sense to have as a tool in your wallet. Sounds like it’s time to consolidate your balances. Balance transfers allow you to take the balances on your existing cards and transfer them to another credit card, usually at a lower rate. This new lower rate helps to reduce your level of debt because more of your monthly payment will go toward paying off debt principal, rather than paying interest. 28 FACE | MARCH 2016

“ A balance transfer at a low rate makes it easier to pay down your balance, improving your debt-to-credit ratio as your balance decreases,” says Randy Hopper, vice president of credit cards at Navy Federal Credit Union. Reducing your debt sounds great, but wouldn’t it be awesome to be debt free? To truly benefit from a balance transfer, follow these simple tips: Know when a deal isn’t actually a deal Typically, credit card issuers charge a fee associated with a balance transfer. This could be a flat fee per number of transfers, or percentage of the total balance you’re bringing over to the new card. “ Keep an eye out for balance transfers with no fees, zero percent interest during the introductory period and a low rate after the intro period expires,” Hopper says. This is where you can really make a difference to your credit score, but make sure you select a card that will give you enough time to pay down your balance in full.

Be sure to read the fine print on the zero percent offers, too. It could be in your best interest to choose a 2.99 percent APR that doesn’t have a balance transfer fee, over a zero percent offer with a three percent fee. In the long run, it could cost you more than you’re saving.

CONSOLIDATE FROM HIGH TO LOW

GREAT LOUISIANA PIECES FOR YOUR HOME

Lots More!

If you’ve got several credit cards and have trouble managing payments, consolidate to one card. You can save money on interest by moving your higher balances into this new account with a lower interest rate. Check the APR on all your credit cards to know which ones would be best for a balance transfer. “ This is a great option for store cards that usually have high interest rates, where credit unions never charge more than 18 percent,” Hopper says. Once you’ve consolidated your credit card debt, avoid making purchases until your debt is paid down. Remember—your goal is to become debt free. Making any new purchases will start accruing interest immediately, which isn’t ideal.

ALWAYS PAY ON TIME Make your payments on time or you could be hit with a penalty APR. Not only do missed payments negatively affect your credit score, but you could risk losing the low introductory rate as well. Forgoing your intro period APR could mean missing your goal of becoming debt free. “ If possible, set up automatic payments along with alerts on your mobile device to ensure payments are made on time,” says Hopper. “Maintaining a healthy track record will boost your credit score.”

USE THEM OR LOSE THEM Finally, when your balance hits zero, keep the account open. Doing so indicates your track record of reliability. As a general rule, credit cards that are in good standing over a long period of time positively impact your credit score. The longer these accounts are open, the better it is for your profile. If you’re looking for a lower interest rate, a simplified payment process, or both, balance transfers are for you. Reducing your credit card debt is within reach. With a good payoff plan and the right card, you could become debt free sooner than you think!

5 Savings Tips To

TAX REFUND REWARDS (Family Features) If $2,000 suddenly hit your bank account, you’d feel like you hit the jackpot, right? That will be a reality for many Americans this tax season as, according to a tax time survey by Straight Talk Wireless, Americans on average expect to receive exactly that back on their tax refund this year. Use this time to reap refund rewards! Ninety-percent of respondents said tax season is a good time to think about how to save money in other areas—with 84 percent thinking a tax refund is a good way to jumpstart healthy financial habits. Follow these five tips to help make your refund go further: DON’T THINK OF YOUR TAX REFUND AS “FUN” MONEY. Sixty-eight percent of Americans said it’s easy to accidentally spend “fun” money on items they don’t really need, but by taking a step back and thinking long term you can make savings choices to help your refund stretch all year long.

30 FACE | MARCH 2016

BE A SAVER. When it comes to tax refunds, Americans are split. Fifty-two percent think you should spend it and 48 percent think refunds should be tucked away in savings. Good financial habits start with saving. Which side will you be on this year?

RESIST THE URGE TO SPLURGE. Just 9 percent of Americans filing taxes this year said they’re likely to use their tax refund to splurge on a big ticket item. Consider using tax refunds to establish good financial habits, such as cutting unnecessary bills. Make a list of monthly expenses and take time to reevaluate your spending on things like food, utilities or your monthly cell phone bill. You’re almost guaranteed to find ways to cut back and reduce costs.

THINK ABOUT WHERE YOUR TAX REFUND WOULD MAKE THE MOST IMPACT. Wireless phone bills are the thing Americans are most likely to say they spent too much money on in 2015 (30 percent), even more than clothing (23 percent), groceries (23 percent) or travel (14 percent).

FIND CELLULAR SAVINGS. Twenty-seven percent of Americans made an effort to cut spending on their wireless phone bills last year. You, too, can use your tax refund to cut ties with your wireless company in 2016. As you look for opportunities to make your tax refund go further, ask yourself why you haven’t switched to a no-contract wireless phone plan? With Straight Talk Wireless, you get access to the best phones on America’s largest and most dependable 4G LTE networks starting at just $45 a month for the unlimited plan. Straight Talk phones and service plans are available exclusively at Walmart.

artists is a great debate. If Spotify is unfamiliar to you, here are the big questions

WHAT is it?

Spotify was launched in 2008 and has completely changed the way people listen to music ever since. By allowing users to play music directly from the cloud—rather than by downloading it first—Spotify became wildly popular, and as a startup, it gave entrenched music industry players like Apple’s iTunes a run for their money. Part of the allure for Spotify’s users is that the service (currently) boasts more than 30 million tracks, and has pretty much every song you’d ever want to listen to. Another attractive feature is that people can use Spotify for free, though

that experience is interrupted by ads, doesn’t have high-definition quality, and mobile phone users can’t just play any song they want (though they can skip five songs per hour). Soon, Spotify plans to add an entirely new service to its repertoire—video. The company recently announced it will start to stream video clips. But it’s not competing with the likes of Hulu and Netflix, yet. Instead it will have content similar to what you’d find on YouTube’s channels, such as video podcasts and online-only programs.

HOW do I use it?

Spotify runs on all manner of smartphones, tablets, PCs, and even televisionconnected set top boxes (including gaming consoles). While Spotify has different capabilities on all of these platforms, each are centered on playing music (and now…videos). For instance, Spotify’s mobile app, available on everything from Android to Windows phone, is all about the tunes, from singles to albums. Meanwhile, the PC version is a platform unto itself, with companion apps for everything from song lyrics to visualizers. Set top box versions of Spotify aren’t particularly easy to use or feature-laden, which makes them a good accessory for mobile or PC users, but they don’t make good primary interfaces.

WHO uses it?

A better question to ask is…who doesn’t? Reaching 58 countries worldwide from Andorra to Uruguay, Spotify has 60 million active users, 20% of whom pay for the service. Compared to Pandora’s almost 80 million actives, Spotify would seem like the underdog, but Pandora only has 3.5 million paying customers. A major part of the service, it lets users share with friends everything from favorite playlists to tracks they’re currently listening to, through social media. This, in turn, helps with music discovery. And according to data polled by Spotify and The Echo Nest, the age of when people stop listening promiscuously is 33. So, maybe this new way of listening is working—it seems to be keeping interest in new music for people who otherwise wouldn’t have access to a wide variety of artists and genres.

LIFE AND LEISURE ELEBRATING THE RESURRECTION

Easter is one of Christianity’s most important holidays. So how did a bunny bearing brightly colored eggs filled with candy hop into the picture? The answer apparently lies in early Christianity’s tendency to absorb and repurpose local pagan customs. OF JESUS CHRIST,

First documented in the 1500s, the cheerful tale of the Easter Bunny hipped and hopped its way into publication in 1680. However, the Easter Bunny’s origin story actually began much earlier in 13th century pre-Christian Germany. At that point in time, people worshiped many gods and goddesses, including Eostra, goddess of the dawn, spring and fertility. The rabbit, an animal famous for its gift for speedy reproduction, was Eostra’s symbol. Rabbits obviously do not lay eggs, but the egg is another pagan symbol of fertility that is often associated with spring and rebirth. As Christianity spread through Germany, both of these traditional symbols of renewal were absorbed into celebrations of Jesus’ resurrection. Before long, the story of the Easter Bunny and his hidden eggs had captured the imaginations of children and become a beloved part of Easter tradition.

Why Does A Bunny Carrying A Basket Of Eggs Symbolize Easter? It has a lot to do with The Resurrection, Germany, gods and goddesses, fertility symbols, carrots, nests … and Pennsylvania.

34 FACE | MARCH 2016

How did candy enter the picture? Much like kids leave cookies and milk for Santa Claus, children in Germany would leave carrots out for the Easter Bunny, hoping the delicacy would convince it to leave them a sweet treat. They would even weave nests out in their gardens to please the rabbit. Eventually, those nests evolved into the baskets we fill today. German immigrants settling in Pennsylvania brought the Easter Bunny’s story with them to the United States, and it has been a highlight of American childhood ever since. Every year, children look forward to Easter baskets filled with jelly beans, chocolate rabbits and other treats as communities all across the nation hold egg hunts and celebrations presided over by the Easter Bunny.

A RESILIENT, GRACEFUL AND INSPIRING LEADER

By Kisha Kana & Savannah Ludwig Photography by Penny Moore of Moore Photography E

FACE MAGAZINE. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

s a young girl, it’s easy to envision life as a simple linear process… Get an education, marry Mr. Wonderful, buy a house, have a family and live the American Dream. Simple indeed. All you have to do is make the right choices and the fairy tale is yours. Right? Oh, if it were only that easy! So, what do you do if you make sound choices but life deals you a different hand—one you weren’t expecting? Well, if you’re Becky Stinson Kreamer, you take a deep breath, find a new focal point and start all over again. We pick up Becky’s story in the early 1980s where life was going according to plan—attending LSU and majoring in education. It was an exciting but stressful time, and in the midst of juggling classes and studying constantly, she picked up a cigarette and soon allowed it to become a constant friend. She also met someone special and they began to date. The relationship began to blossom and as Becky thought about her future, she realized she needed to stop smoking. “It wasn’t easy, but I made the choice to stop and I did.” She recalls, “One day I just decided to throw away my last pack of cigarettes and go for a run. I ran three miles and it almost killed me.” [Kreamer is still an avid runner, completing 9 marathons to date, with aspirations to complete at least one more.] Life was on the fast track, as her longtime boyfriend proposed when graduation was quickly approaching. It was 1985—a big year for Becky, as she not only graduated with a B.S. in Special Education, but also got married. The path was set and her life as planned was beginning.

Shortly after graduating, she accepted a Special Education position in Jefferson Parish teaching at-risk high school students. “I loved working with these kids… they really needed help. Most could barely read and many already had criminal records. Some had been abused and neglected for years.” says Becky. As any teacher will tell you, there’s only so much you can legally do for these kids as a teacher; and when those avenues have been exhausted, but the child needs more, you find yourself in a very frustrating position. That is where Becky found herself, time and time again. She wanted to do more; she had to do more, so she decided to go back to school to become a lawyer. “I wanted to give abused women and children a voice, a chance to get out of a bad situation,” she explains. Meanwhile, Kreamer found herself in a tough situation. After three years of marriage, things began to unravel at home. Her husband was battling a substance abuse problem that was just not getting any better and she was faced with a tough choice. Stay in the relationship and rely on his financial support while attending law school, or file for divorce and go at it alone. Becky knew in her heart that the right thing to do for them both was to end the marriage. “You can let fear paralyze you or you can face it and use it as a tool to improve,” says Becky. Now alone, she continued to work during the day and attend law school at night. Life was difficult but Kreamer never gave up. As she worked towards her degree, something unexpected happened…she met Charles “Chuck” Kreamer, a man that would forever change her life. Chuck was also in law school. The two started dating and quickly fell in love. The couple graduated with law degrees from Loyola University and got married on Becky’s birthday in 1993.

Moving to Lafayette, Becky “I very much admire her quickly made ability to manage the many the shift from education to components of her life so litigation. Life incredibly effectively. Very few was good and people can meet the needs of all the couple was excited about the areas of their lives as she does.” future. Now in her — Kimberly Cummins, Principal 30’s, Becky didn’t Martin Petitjean Elementary School think that having children herself was realistic so she focused on helping women and children. She gave it her all, but after only a few years of practice, Kreamer could no longer deny the uneasy feeling that something wasn’t quite right. Becky confesses, “It was devastating to me. Here I had invested all of this time and money into getting my law degree and it just wasn’t what I expected. I didn’t feel like I was making the impact that I wanted—I missed the classroom and I knew I needed to be around children more.” She decided to transition back to her first calling, education. Abandoning law, she took a position with LPSS teaching children with developmental delays and learning disabilities. She loved being back in the classroom and she was blessed with co-workers who quickly became close friends. Once again, life was on track and the future was looking good. Not long after, the couple learned that Becky was pregnant! They were overjoyed, and preparations for the baby were in full swing. Then tragedy struck; at 25 weeks, she learned that her unborn son, Luke, had died.

“If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more and become more, you are a leader.” — John Quincy Adams

“The future of our community relies on our children. They are the leaders of tomorrow. Through Becky’s influence, students have an increased opportunity to be college and career ready through the leadership skills that have been embedded in the curriculum and culture of our schools.” —Anne Herrmann, Principal Plantation Elementary School

Losing him was overwhelming she explains, “I would sit in his nursery, crying and praying. Those were tough times. Had it not been for the support of Chuck, our friends, family and our faith—I don’t know how I would have made it through those dark days.” Time passed and she returned to the classroom, but the yearning to be a mother was now more prevalent than ever for Becky. However, becoming pregnant for a second time would prove difficult as the Kreamers were met with infertility issues. Faced with several options, the couple chose to have faith in God to set the plans for their future—knowing that if it was His will, it would happen. Remarkably, within a short period of time, she would become pregnant. Nine months later they were blessed with a beautiful baby boy, “Charles”.

Becky was now 35, an age when women are typically advised against having more children. Not the case for the Kreamers! Over the next three years, they would have two more children, Will & Elle! Now, with three kids in diapers, Becky decided to take some time off. As she planned to return to work, she received a called from [then] LPSS Superintendent Burnell Lemoine telling her that he wanted her to assist with getting at-risk schools in the parish back on track. When Becky explained she wasn’t sure how to accomplish that, Mr. Lemoine told her, “I believe in you. I’ve seen the skills you bring to the table and I am sure you’ll know what to do.” It was his unwavering belief in her that gave her the confidence to take the position. Becky, along with other educators, brainstormed and researched ways to better the school system. It was at this time that Becky learned of a school in Raleigh, South Carolina that succeeded in turning a failing school (on the brink of closure) into a thriving, successful school. Intrigued by the story, plans were made for Becky to visit the school to learn the methodology behind their success. However, it was not to be—at least not then. While planning the trip, she received incredible news. She was pregnant! The doctors told Becky, who was now 46, that childbirth at her age was risky. Once again, the Kreamers put their trust in God’s hands and Becky gave birth to their fourth child, Thomas, with no complications. Within weeks, Becky (determined to see the project through) was able to visit the school in Raleigh. It was life changing for her. The school had implemented a program called The Leader In Me™, which is based on the #1 Best Selling book by Stephen Covey, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People. The idea that kids are much more than a test score had a profound effect on Kreamer. Returning to work, Becky was on a mission; to give the children of Acadiana access to this wonderful program that would allow them to realize their worth and potential. She wanted the kids to know that someone believed in them, so they could believe in themselves—much like her personal experience with Superintendent Lemoine.

“She infuses the joy of living through her energetic teaching style and captures her audience with her commitment and thirst for lifelong learning. Her friendship endures and she makes you feel you are the most important person in her life—even when you may be just an acquaintance. I am thankful Becky is in my life. She makes me laugh, she makes me think outside the box and she never limits me. She encourages me to achieve my vision, and that is what a great teacher does!” — Babs J. Dees, Program Developer

Department of Continuing Education University of Louisiana at Lafayette

To gain interest and support in the Leader In Me™ program, Kreamer began speaking with and giving copies of the book to educators and community leaders. There was interest, but no one was ready to jump on board in their classrooms. Then, one morning at Red Lerille’s Health & Racquet Club, Becky met up with friend and colleague Kimberly Cummins, who was the principal at Martin Petitjean Elementary School in Acadia Parish. She gave Cummins a copy of the book and asked if she’d share it with others for their feedback. Intrigued with the material, Cummins shared the book with some of her teachers who also became interested in this new way of thinking and being. This common interest and conviction to the program set in motion the first school wide implementation in Acadiana of The Leader in Me™. Soon, many other schools would follow suit and at present, there are “When I reflect on her gifts, I am in awe of her ability to perceive. She has great intuition and empathy. This makes her a great listener and coach as she understands deeply. She sees and feels the emotions behind the words of others. By doing so, she helps people to unlock their own potential and to be the best version of themselves. This is a rare talent, but she possesses it in such a beautiful way. This makes her a leader that people will both seek and follow.” — Margaret H. Trahan, President/CEO United Way of Acadiana

approximately 35 schools in the Acadiana area utilizing the award winning program. Becky has lived her whole life playing the hand she’s been dealt, making the best of it and choosing the path that isn’t always easy, but right for her. No longer employed by LPSS, Kreamer is the President of REBACON, Inc., which focuses on supervisory roles and consulting. She has worked on countless special projects and been certified in numerous Franklin Covey course offerings and is an instructor at ULL Continuing Education. She spends the majority of her time facilitating The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People trainings and The Leader In Me™ trainings for Franklin Covey, training educators and businesses with the Leader in Me™ principles. “Anyone can do this. You first learn to become a leader of yourself and then you can lead others,” she says with a glow in her eyes and a bright beautiful smile. Although the general consensus credits Kreamer for bringing The Leader in Me™ program to Acadiana, she modestly refuses the recognition, saying, “The teachers are the reason for brightening the lives of the children of this community, they deserve the credit. I just planted the seed.” Now at 52, Becky is the mother of four children, ages 6-17, a wife of 22 years and a major component in The Leader in Me program. She is a prime example of how the 7 habits will allow you to meet your full potential. Beautiful inside and out, she brings encouragement and hope to everyone she meets. This down to earth woman immediately puts you at ease with her openness and warmth, reminding everyone, “You can’t change your past, but you can change your future. It’s never too late—you can start now, at any age. It begins with your thinking.”

How to Pose for Wedding Pictures edding photos are highly cherished and provide the perfect way to remember the happiest day of your life. Unfortunately, many brides have doubts about how to look their best in those timeless keepsakes. The good news is, you don’t have to stress over this issue. A few tips, some confidence, and the help of an experienced wedding photographer will ensure that you fall in love with your wedding pictures. Posing for wedding pictures is a fairly simple science. There are tricks for improving the appearance of your face and body, and the general atmosphere in almost any setting. Commit these simple steps to memory, and cross one additional item off of your pre-wedding to-do list.

FACE THE MUSIC MAXIMIZING YOUR BEAUTY IN WEDDING PHOTOS The first and most important thing you need to do is give a radiant natural smile. Forcing a smile is not only obvious, but it causes your eyes to look squinty and your cheeks to seem puffy.

Angling your face will add shadows and intrigue to your face, making it seem slimmer and more captivating in wedding pictures.

To elongate your neck, extend your chin forward with a slight downward tilt. Many assume this will cause a double chin (even on the slimmest of figures), but it will add depth and character to your face. To combat any possible unsightly chin bulge, firmly press your tongue against the roof of your mouth. Also be sure to avoid facing the camera head-on. Angling your face will add shadows and intrigue to your face, making it seem slimmer and more captivating in wedding pictures.

POSING FOR WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHY

TAKING BEAUTIFUL WEDDING PICTURES

To avoid having your body seem misshapen or unsightly in your wedding photos, be sure to maintain good posture as much as possible. Bad posture will almost certainly ruin any head-to-toe picture. Also keep in mind the rule of perspective: whatever is closest to the camera will appear larger in the photos.

One of the best things you can do to enhance the beauty of your wedding photos is to portray a genuinely sparkling personality. Do not lose yourself in trying to strike the perfect pose; your pictures will end up seeming forced and insincere. Study pictures of professional models to identify the poses and facial expressions that will come most naturally to you.

Practice the “red carpet pose” by facing the camera with your hips at a 45 degree angle, one foot pointed at the camera, and your weight resting on your back leg. Another trick is to cross your legs at the calves, especially in front-facing shots. This will elongate your legs and naturally narrow your hips.

When posing with a group, such as with bridesmaids or family, avoid mimicking the pose of the person next to you. This will help you stand out from the crowd. Consult your wedding photographer to identify the best pose for each shot. You’ll likely have many candid photos taken of you, so be mindful of your facial expressions. You can expect breathtaking wedding pictures if you remember to be confident, genuine, and use these tips to enhance the appearance of your face and body.

TEXTING AT NIGHT AFFECTS TEENS’ SLEEP, ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE By Patti Verbanas

CAN’T STOP TEXTING? If you’re a teenager, it may be to blame for falling grades and increased yawning in school, according to a new Rutgers study.

Ming’s research is part of a small but growing body of evidence on the negative effects of electronics on sleep and school performance. But few studies, Ming says, have focused specifically on instant messaging.

The study, published in the Journal of Child Neurology, “During the last few years I have noticed is the first of its kind to link nighttime an increased use of smartphones by my instant messaging habits of American “The effects of “blue light” patients with sleep problems,” Ming teenagers to sleep health and school performance. emitted from smartphones and says. “I wanted to isolate how messaging alone—especially after the lights are tablets are intensified when out—contributes to sleep-related “We need to be aware that teenagers problems and academic performance.” are using electronic devices excessively viewed in a dark room…” and have a unique physiology,” says To conduct her study, Ming distributed study author Xue Ming, professor of surveys to three New Jersey high schools—a suburban and an neuroscience and neurology at Rutgers New Jersey urban public school and a private school—and evaluated the Medical School. “They tend to go to sleep late and 1,537 responses contrasting grades, sexes, messaging duration get up late. When they go against that natural rhythm, and whether the texting occurred before or after lights out. students become less efficient.” The American Academy of Pediatrics reports that media use among children of all ages is increasing exponentially; studies have found that children ages 8 to 18 use electronic devices approximately 7.5 hours daily. 46 FACE | MARCH 2016

She found that students who turned off their devices or who messaged for less than 30 minutes after lights out performed significantly better in school than those who messaged for more than 30 minutes after lights out.

Students who texted longer in the dark also slept fewer hours and were sleepier during the day than those who stopped messaging when they went to bed. Texting before lights out did not affect academic performance, the study found. Although females reported more messaging overall and more daytime sleepiness, they had better academic performance than males. “I attribute this to the fact that the girls texted primarily before turning off the light,” Ming says.

The effects of “blue light” emitted from smartphones and tablets are intensified when viewed in a dark room, Ming says. This short wavelength light can have a strong impact on daytime sleepiness symptoms since it can delay melatonin release, making it more difficult to fall asleep—even when seen through closed eyelids. “When we turn the lights off, it should be to make a gradual transition from wakefulness to sleep,” Ming says. “If a person keeps getting text messages with alerts and light emission, that also can disrupt their circadian rhythm. Rapid Eye Movement sleep is the period during sleep most important to learning, memory consolidation and social adjustment in adolescents. When falling asleep is delayed but rising time is not, REM sleep will be cut short, which can affect learning and memory.”

Studies have found that children ages 8 to 18 use electronic devices approximately 7.5 hours daily.

Ming notes some benefits to early-evening media use, such as facilitating collaboration for school projects, providing resources for tutoring, increasing school readiness and possibly offering emotional support systems. She suggests that educators recognize the sleep needs of teenagers and incorporate sleep education in their curriculum. “Sleep is not a luxury; it’s a biological necessity. Adolescents are not receiving the optimal amount of sleep; they should be getting 8.5 hours at night,” says Ming. “Sleep deprivation is a strong argument in favor of later start times for high schools—like 9 a.m.”

JOB INTERVIEW SUCCESS TIPS How to take smart notes and improve your answers to job interview questions

NOTEWORTHY INFORMATION You want to appear engaged in the meeting and capture notes that will help you remember key information.

(Family Features) For recent grads and young professionals, first job interviews are a crash course in interpersonal skills, thinking on one’s feet, and the danger of mistakes. To ease the learning curve a bit, use these tips to take smart notes during your job interview, answer questions intelligently, schedule the second (or third) interview and, of course, land your perfect job.

WHAT IS THE INTERVIEWER LOOKING FOR? A job interviewer knows that a recent grad will not have a wealth of direct experience to bring to the interview. Instead, the person sitting across the table from you is asking you questions to gauge your future potential and critical thinking skills. Interviewers are looking for:

It’s a delicate balance. Take too many notes and you’ve missed part of the conversation and you aren’t making eye contact. Take too few notes and you have no documentation of the meeting. By taking notes in bullet point form with a digital notepad such as the Bamboo Spark, you will have a complete overview of the relevant points of the interview, including:

INFORMATION ABOUT THE COMPANY • Challenges of the role and for the company • Details related to the job • Questions you may have from the interview • Cultural items to which you have a connection

Immediately after the interview, find someplace quiet and take additional notes on anything you missed during the interview. Notes could include: impressions of the interviewer, next steps or cultural insights you didn’t want to document in the moment.

WHAT TO DO WITH YOUR NOTES During the interview, use your bullet points to bring your solutions to the challenges of the company back into the conversation. This shows that you are actively listening and processing the information offered. After the interview, follow up with a thank you email. In this email, expand on a few of the solutions you offered to the company’s problems and mention any cultural areas in which you think you might have a fit. If you are offered a second or third interview, go back to your original notes and rewrite them in narrative form. This will help you prepare for your next interview. In each interview, your responses should build on the information of past interviews. Your answers should be more thoughtful and better informed, proving that you are able to consume information, process it, and offer solutions.

• How you process information • How you analyze problems • How you formulate solutions • Cultural fit with the company The notes you take in the meeting will help you process the information that the interviewer is sharing, help you organize your thoughts so you can then share your problem-solving skills during the interview, and be used later in your thank you email and subsequent interviews. 48 FACE | MARCH 2016

SEAL THE DEAL

With a digital notepad, handwritten notes or sketches are converted instantly to digital format for future editing.

When interviewing there is one big element you can’t control: the interviewer’s personality. Observe the interviewer as much as you are being observed. Learn about that person and sell yourself to that individual. Listen to their questions and tailor your answers to that specific person, not the canned answers you’ve prepared in the mirror. Feeling Trapped in the Maze – Part 1 By Don Short, LPC, LMFT

THE EMDR THERAPY SOLUTION CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE

EMDR is the acronym for Eye Movement

Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s an evidencebased mode of psychotherapy that is extremely effective at treating a variety of emotional, mental health and physical issues. It was discovered and developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro, Ph.D. in 1990 and has been a life changing therapy for thousands of people over the years. There is a lot of information on EMDR Therapy at www.emdr.com for anyone wishing to review some of the extensive research that has been completed on this modality of therapy. LET’S IMAGINE FOR A MINUTE that you have a cut on a finger. Not a cut that needs stitches but a minor cut with some bleeding. What would you do? What needs to happen for that cut to heal? These sound like simple questions with obvious answers. You are right! All you have to do is to clean the cut, along with the area around it and keep the wounded area in a clean and safe environment. It will heal itself automatically. It doesn’t matter who you are—male, female, black, white, Hispanic, religious or non-religious. The fact of the matter is that our bodies are prone to heal themselves when we provide a clean, safe, healthy environment. On the other hand if the environment is dirty and toxic then our finger will not heal. It will become infected; the infection will spread and make us sick. The example of the finger cut parallels with hurts and wounds in the mental/emotional areas of our lives. We all have been hurt or wounded mentally/emotionally. Healing will begin to take place when we remove the toxins from our mind and emotions. How does one do this? Sometimes we feel life is going well, only to notice fragments of these issues from our past finding a nasty way of intruding into present life situations 50 FACE | MARCH 2016

and relationships. We become tired and exhausted with these intrusions. We begin to feel stuck or trapped in a maze of emotional chaos. It’s a maze of fear, shame, panic, anxiety, grief and/or anger. You can’t find a way out of this maze. You have great difficulty moving forward with your life and relationships in peace. These past unresolved issues are represented as the proverbial ‘pink elephant’ in the room that we are not to talk about or the issues that are buried, only to be triggered at some unforeseen moment. How does one recognize these unresolved issues from our past or how do they manifest themselves in our daily life? Some of you already know the answer to this question. For you, it has been those intensive feelings/thoughts that you have been trying to conceal for years. It’s a day-to-day struggle to keep these past thoughts and feelings from intruding into the present. It’s a cycle you want to break. A roller coaster you want to get off of and never get back on again. One way to help patients is by helping them identify these issues from the past that are intruding into the present by using a Level of Disturbance Scale of 1 to10 (1 meaning no disturbance and 10 representing the highest level of disturbance). The way this

works is that when you are experiencing emotions of anger, fear, or anxiety, which are all normal emotions, you are feeling that emotion at a level 10. You look at the situation you are in and realize that the level should only be a 3 or 4. Why is the level of disturbance you are experiencing so high? The answer is that an unresolved issue or a wound from your past has been triggered. EMDR Therapy can help identify these past issues and is very useful in resolving them. You don’t lose the memory of the issue but by processing the disturbing memory with EMDR Therapy the memory loses its capacity to interrupt and interfere with your life in the future. This old wound will be healed and will no longer be triggered or becomei intrusive again. EMDR Therapy is considered by many to be a breakthrough therapy. It can bring about quick and lasting results/relief for most types of emotional distress. In EMDR Therapy we use bilateral stimulation. This could include right/left eye movements, sounds or tactile stimulation. In doing this, we are activating the opposite sides of the brain, which allows for the releasing of emotional experiences that have been “trapped” EMDR Therapy has been found effective with a variety of conditions. These include: the loss of a loved one, a car accident, rape, natural disasters, childhood abuse, anxiety and panic attacks, fears, childhood trauma, PTSD, anger and relationship problems..

in the nervous system. This mind/body connection frees itself from blockages and then reconnects itself in healthy ways. It transforms troubling images and feelings into a more peaceful state, along with the resolution of the identified issue and the healing of old wounds. During this process we replace issues related to anxiety and fears with positive images, emotions and thoughts. When the toxic issues are addressed and removed, the healing process flows naturally. As the therapist, I am a partner with my clients on this journey. Together we find the healing, peace and the new life my clients desire. EMDR Therapy has been found effective with a variety of conditions. These include: the loss of a loved one, a car accident, rape, natural disasters, childhood abuse, anxiety and panic attacks, fears, childhood trauma, PTSD, anger and relationship problems. Sometimes we get used to carrying our “stuff”, our “baggage”, our pain and shame. No matter your age, it is never too late to find healing for toxic issues from your past. Sometimes we need help in dealing with the difficult and destructive issues in our life and removing the old toxins that have been poisoning our minds, spirits and relationships.

SAFE EXERCISE DURING PREGNANCY

E

xercise is essential during pregnancy to maintain your health. Women who keep

physically active while pregnant are less likely to experience issues such as back pain and tiredness. Exercise may also help to reduce your risk of pregnancy complications like blood clots and gestational diabetes. Finally, maintaining your physical fitness helps to prepare your body for labor. However, you should take precautions to make sure that your exercise regime doesn’t harm you or your developing baby.

Whatever activity you choose, try to aim for 30 minutes of exercise most days each week.

ACTIVITIES TO AVOID

IF YOU ARE NEW TO EXERCISE

Although many forms of exercise are safe for you to take part in while you’re pregnant, you should avoid activities that pose a greater risk. High risk activities in pregnancy include:

For anyone not physically active before pregnancy, as long as you get the go ahead from your doctor, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to start low-intensity exercise during pregnancy. Walking is a good activity to start with, though low-impact aerobics and swimming are also suitable activities. Whatever activity you choose, try to aim for 30 minutes of exercise most days each week.

Contact sports like basketball, softball and volleyball Horse riding, skiing and any other activities where you’re likely to fall Any exercise that risks abdominal trauma Activities that involve a lot of jumping, skipping or running Bouncing while you stretch out during your warm up or cool down section Twisting your waist while you’re standing up Exercise that requires you to lie on your back for more than a few minutes Activities that require you to hold your breath, such as underwater swimming Any exercise when the weather is hot and humid

EXERCISE IN MODERATION If you’re already physically active, you can usually continue with your chosen activity, as long as it’s not one of the types of exercise mentioned above. You may need to reduce the intensity of your exercise, as you shouldn’t allow your heart rate to rise above 140. You should also follow the signals that your body gives you, exercising at a level that feels comfortable. 52 FACE | MARCH 2016

JOIN A PRENATAL EXERCISE CLASS Taking part in an aquanatal group or an antenatal yoga class, for instance, guarantees that the activity is suitable for you during pregnancy. Joining an exercise group for expectant moms also helps you to meet other pregnant women in your area, allowing you to meet up socially with them after your baby’s birth.

TAKING EXTRA CARE While most women can exercise safely during pregnancy, you should discuss physical activity with your practitioner in certain instances. For example, if you have a history of spotting during pregnancy, a weak cervix, recurrent miscarriages or premature delivery, exercise may pose a greater risk to you. Your doctor can therefore provide individual advice on activity based on your circumstances.

J

UST LIKE BASEBALL AND APPLE PIE, DENIM FASHIONS ARE AN

AMERICAN CLASSIC. From Levi’s to Guess, it’s been around for many generations and everyone loves wearing them. And why not; denim is fashionable, stylish, and the trendiest apparel in modern time. It’s always in style! But let’s face it; in order to own the latest pair of designer style jeans you may almost break the bank.

GET THE DISTRESSED DENIM LOOK By Tracee Dundas Here is an easy D.I.Y. idea for getting that designer distressed denim shorts style at a fraction of the cost. Easy, breezy and how cool to say that you designed them yourself! MATERIALS NEEDED INCLUDE:

1. One pair of jeans 2. Sharp fabric scissors 3. Marker or colored pen 4. Washer and Dryer Start off with a long pair of blue jeans that you’ve decided you won’t wear anymore or pick up a pair of at the local thrift store. LOOK AT YOURSELF in a

mirror wearing the jeans and decide the length you would like them to be as shorts. 54 FACE | MARCH 2016

USING A MARKER, draw a line on only the front of one pant leg, just below where you want so it isn’t too short. Remember it’s easy to cut more fabric if necessary, but once you’ve cut the fabric you can’t add it back on. TAKE OFF THE BLUE JEANS and lay

them on a smooth surface, using sharp scissors to cut the fabric across your marked line. Use long strokes to get a straight line.

USE THE FINISHED CUT LEG as a template to cut the other leg evenly by folding the cut leg over the other, smoothing out, and use the same technique to cut the second leg off.

The final look is a fun, fabulous, stylish pair of blue shorts that didn’t cost a small fortune and the best part is—you did it yourself!

CHECK YOUR WORK by slipping your new

denim shorts on to make sure your lines are even and the shorts aren’t too short. TIME TO ADD THE DISTRESSED LOOK!

Preselect where you’d like to have the distressed points on the shorts and make a small mark with your colored pen. Make sure your marks are not too close or you could end up with a huge hole! AT EACH CUT AREA, use your fingers to PINCH ONE AREA you marked and, using

the tip of your scissors, cut a small slit in the center, followed by a short cut to each side to create one long cut across. Repeat this step at each distress mark you made.

pull down any threads to help get the fray finish started. TOSS THE SHORTS IN THE WASHER and

dryer to complete the fraying process.

MAKEUP

DAY

MADDY’S PERSONAL MAKEUP ROUTINE FOR DAY AND NIGHT

1. I started off priming eyelids with an eye shadow primer. I then applied my transition shade, a light brown color, onto my crease. I blended as well as I possible, using a fluffy brush. 2. I began to darken up my crease by using various shades of brown eyeshadow. Try and keep the eye shadows on your crease only. If it gets a little messy and falls onto your lid, that is fine because we will be cleaning the lid in a little bit. 3. This is the only tricky part. Using a very small, flat eye shadow brush, I dipped it into concealer. Skin color cream eyeshadow would give the same effect. Carve out the lid with product on the brush. Pretend it’s eye shadow and place it on your entire lid from the inner to outer lid. Keep this away from your crease. This will give the effect of a “cut crease.” 4. I took a very light pale color eyeshadow and packed it on top of where we just applied the concealer/cream eyeshadow. 5. For eyeliner, I made one simple line above my lash line using felt tip liquid eyeliner. If you’re a beginner with liquid liner, I recommend starting with a felt tip. It’s a lot easier to control. 6. I applied the same shade I used for my transition shade, the light brown, to my lower lash line. I didn’t want to leave my lower lash line empty. After this, I applied mascara to my upper and lower lashes and blended my crease a tiny bit more. Blending is key—always remember that! I paired this eye look with a brownish nude lipstick. What you choose to wear on your lips can always complete a very nice eye shadow look! This beautiful eye shadow can be worn on any occasion. It’s so natural and perfect for the day time. To wear this at night, you can use darker shades in the crease.

NIGHT

DAY NIGHT

This DAY look is so simple, yet it adds so much to your appearance. The browns in the crease give your eyes a look of dimension while making your eye color pop! It’s so simple and easy to achieve.

The NIGHT look is perfect for an evening out, no matter where you’re headed. Dark smokey eyes give you a look of fierceness and confidence while the pop of shimmer completes the look, giving you a cute and pretty feel. 1. I primed eye lids with eyeshadow primer, then applied my transition shade, a light brown color, onto the crease of my eyelid. I made sure to blend this as well as I could using a fluffy brush. 2. I applied a dark plum/purple shade onto the lid only. Be careful. If it’s any higher than the lid, it could cause you to look like you have a black eye. UNIQUE FASHION

3. I then took a big fluffy brush and buffed out that plum color. Do this step slowly. Blend as well as possible. You want the effect of no harsh lines or strokes. (I didn’t add any other color. When I blended the Plum color, the purple hues got a little washed out.)

STYLISH ACCESSORIES

4. Next, I applied a tiny amount of gold cream eyeshadow to the center of my lid. I wanted a sticky base down so when I applied my shimmer shade, it would enhance shimmer and color. I then packed a very intense gold eye shadow on top of that cream eyeshadow base. 5. I applied false eyelashes to top lashes only to complete this look. For my lower waterline, I applied that same Plum color and blended it out with a pencil brush under my waterline, then applied mascara. I put some little black pencil eyeliner onto my lower waterline and I felt that it really pulled things together! About the author: Madelyn Meaux lives in Lafayette and has a passion for makeup. WARDROBE MAKEOVER If you feel that your wardrobe can use a good revamping, then it is probably time to do so.

Dr. Jennifer Baumgartner, author of You Are What You Wear says that the majority of people wear 20% of their closet, 80% of the time. This could mean one of three things. Either you only feel comfortable and stylish in that 20%, the other 80% doesn’t fit or your closet is so full and unorganized, you don’t know what’s in it. (For help with closet organization, see Get Motivated to Get Organized on page 25).

PURGING SET ASIDE AN AFTERNOON of no interruptions for your wardrobe makeover. You will be purging 50-80% of your closet. If this idea makes you nervous, recruit a trusted friend or two to assist you so that you stay committed to your goal. Remember your goal is to revamp your wardrobe, not to hoard clothing.

TOSSING

IF YOU HAVEN’T WORN IT IN A YEAR, make it disappear. There is a reason you aren’t wearing it and that reason is unlikely to change before it’s completely out of style, so just let it go. IF IT DOESN’T FIT, make it split. If you are hanging on to clothes for the day you get back into your size zeros, get rid of them. It’s discouraging to keep small clothing around as a reminder that you’ve put on weight. Accept where you are and if ever you get back to your pre-baby size, you can reward yourself with a new wardrobe.

BODY TYPE

CONFIDENCE IS KEY. Just because it “fits”, doesn’t mean it’s the best fit for you. If it doesn’t sit well on your body, you’re unlikely to feel confident in it. You don’t want to wear clothing that makes you constantly fidget. Wearing clothing that accentuates your body type will allow you to look and feel your best. If it’s in your budget, consider hiring a tailor to make the best of what you already own to fit your individual body. SHOE INVENTORY. Following the same protocol as clothing—toss out any shoes that you haven’t worn in a year, isn’t comfortable or isn’t worth repairing. MAKE FASHION YOUR PASSION. Accessories are your friends. Once you have purged your closet, it will look thin. Don’t panic. The best dressed women have less clothing but know how to mix and match so that it looks as though they have endless outfits. Wear tops with various pants, skirts and shorts. Pair dresses with jackets or tights. Add a shawl or scarf to change up your looks, as well as various combinations of jewelry. COMBINING THE WARDROBE MAKEOVER with closet organization will make dressing in the mornings less stressful and more time friendly. With less in your closet, clothes shopping will become easier, as you will have a mental checklist of items in your closet that may match your purchase. Soon, friends will start to notice you always look put together and will want to know your secret.

of thirstation.

The world’s first recorded Saint Patrick’s Day Parade took place in Boston on March 18, 1737. St. Patrick was not Irish. He was brought to Ireland from Britain as a boy to be used for slavery. For many years, blue was the color most often associated with St. Patrick as green was considered unlucky. Every year Chicago puts green dye into the river on St. Patrick’s Day. It lasts about 5 hours. St. Patrick was credited for driving the snakes out of Ireland but records show there weren’t any to begin with. The shamrock was used by St. Patrick to explain the holy trinity. The phrase “Drowning The Shamrock” is from the custom of floating the shamrock on the top of whiskey before drinking it. The Irish believe that if you keep the custom, then you will have a prosperous year. St. Patrick died on March 17th A.D. 461 and the date is a national holiday in Ireland. The holiday was celebrated in space—twice. Patty is short for Patricia, not Patrick. If one shortens St. Patrick’s Day, the correct, acceptable term is St. Paddy’s Day. Faceacadiana.com | FACE 69
