remember it well—it was the early 1970’s and I was a student at Woodvale Elementary. One day as I walked with my class back from the cafeteria, the school secretary (Miss Anna
Judice) called me out of line and asked me to come with her—not sure if I was in trouble, I slowly walked over... Yes Miss Anna? She said, “Don’t worry, you didn’t do anything wrong, I need some help carrying something from my car.” As she opened her car door, I could smell something that was very unique, something delicious; something that I knew didn’t come from the school cafeteria. She handed me a box; it was filled with lots of small brown bags that obviously contained food, but what? As Miss Anna lifted the second box out of her car, she asks if I know what’s in the boxes… As I shake my head no, she says, “They’re hamburgers, Judice Inn hamburgers, and I’m bringing them for the teachers.” I remember 70 years later…kids are still growing up at Judice Inn. 8 FACE | APRIL 2017

JUDICE INN TRIVIA • When Judice Inn opened, Johnston Street was still a gravel road. Most people think the pipe & chain in front of the building is to protect it from being hit by a car. Fact is, they were installed so people could tie up their horse when they stopped in to eat.

Sentimental Simplicity The most personal gift By Elizabeth Hesterly

M
y aunt who my family affectionately called “Chatch” was a strong purveyor of the bread and butter note. She had boxes and boxes of note cards and stationery, and she used them daily. From the time that I went off to college in 1979, Chatch wrote me once a week for the rest of her life. She died in 2008, only a few months shy of her 90th birthday. Imagine how many times I opened my mail box to find correspondence from her. I miss those cards and letters still. They were often simple little notes, full of her cheer and chattiness, and they made me happy. They conveyed her love and devotion to me, and they made me feel connected to her in a precious way. Chatch (rhymes with scotch) was from a generation who cherished the art of letter writing. She selected her paper goods with care and I always sensed that she matched her recipient to the paper she chose. Her handwriting was not an easy one to read, but that didn’t matter. I had years of practice. From Chatch I learned that receiving an old-fashioned letter in the mail is a simple gift. I know what it meant to me to recognize that she had thought of me and sat down to tell me so. I’ve kept many of her cards, and I’ve stored in special boxes notes she wrote to both of my sons. Letters are important. They are tools of learning. We have a deeper understanding of American history through the letters of our patriots, through the letters of soldiers at war to spouses at home, through the
letters of those who aimed to be President. A letter is a treasure. It’s a record of the day, a peek into the moment, a first-hand account. But most people don’t write letters any more. We’ve got email and texting and Facebook and all sorts of social media angles that thwart our efforts toward pen and paper. I wish it weren’t so. I personally like finding a card or letter in my mailbox. I immediately notice when my stack of mail contains a unique envelope resting among junk mail and bills. I cull my mail, sorting by category, with the rare personal correspondence positioned on top. I eagerly read this type of mail first. We all have excuses justifying our neglect of letter writing. We’re busy. It’s unnecessary. A phone call is easier. However, I’ll contend all my life that writing a letter to someone who is lonely or sick or in some kind of peril is just about the best gift you can offer. Test me and see. Think of someone you need to thank, or someone who means a lot to you, or someone you know who is struggling. Then send that person a handwritten note. Your simple gift will do wonders. I know because that’s what Chatch taught me. Let’s not be part of the first generation who neglects to leave an important legacy. Your letters and mine, they offer a historical record. They will tell our stories. They will give those who come after us a personal glimpse into our lives, what we cared about, those we loved, and what we thought of the world around us. So, let’s write letters. Let’s make history. Let’s put our words onto paper and leave a lasting image. No text or email or Instagram can do that. Choose your paper, select your pen, and give your words away. Elizabeth O’Roark Hesterly was born and raised in Lafayette. ACADIANA LIFE KIWANIS OF LAFAYETTE DONATES $25,000 TO WOODVALE ELEMENTARY
T
HE KIWANIS CLUB OF LAFAYETTE recently presented a $25,000 check to the Woodvale Elementary PTC for help with the schools much-needed new playground structure. The Woodvale PTC raised more than $35,000 over the past five years to build momentum for the project and the Kiwanis of Lafayette graciously stepped in to assist them in making the project a reality. Present to accept the donation were Ms Monique Vidos, Woodvale Principal, Ms Brandi Comeaux, Woodvale PTC President, and a handful of students and PTC members.
The project will be built upon the conclusion of the current school year and will be ready for use at the start of the 2017-18 school year. In addition, because of Kiwanis’ involvement, the project’s contractor Kincade Recreation (who previously partnered with the club to build Parc Independence), has agreed to donate four benches with Kiwanis logos for the project! The playground equipment will be used by students, as well as others who participate in after school programs and activities.

Brock Turner was arrested, and subsequently convicted of sexual assault. Controversy surrounded the case from beginning to end, and there is a lot we could talk about regarding sexual assault and Brock Turner. But as a frontline soldier in the battle against sexual assault, and as a mother of a teenage kid, what stood out to me was this quote from Brock Turner: “My intentions were not to rape a girl without her consent—I was just trying to hook up with a girl.” See, it’s right there, that word— consent.
Movies and books glamorize the strong, masculine hero who forces himself on a woman and kisses and gropes her until she gives in to his passionate advances. The truth is that these types of actions and behaviors are sexual assault. And there are real consequences for both the survivor of sexual assault and the perpetrator. People want to believe that rapists hide in dark alleys and wear ski masks. We teach our
children about stranger danger, and we generally believe that bad things like sexual abuse and sexual assault happen to bad people and in bad places. And while it is important to educate our children about the dangers of this world and to practice safety precautions, the truth is that rapists and perpetrators are more than likely people we know and often trust. Understanding consent is of utmost importance because sexual assault can end up being what you don’t intend to happen. #GotConsent?
Merriam-Webster defines consent this way, “to agree to do or allow something: to give permission for something to happen or be done.” For survivors of sexual assault and sexual abuse, consent is something denied to them. They did not agree for something to happen or to be done to them. Or maybe they agreed to some things but not to everything. Survivors of sexual assault often struggle with self-blame over consent. Hearts of Hope wants to help people understand consent. First, if someone is under the age of 17, they cannot consent to sexual activity. If someone is drinking or under the influence of any drug, they cannot give consent to sexual

Just because someone said “YES” at one time to sexual activity, doesn’t imply “YES” every time. The absence of “NO” does not equal “YES”. And someone can say “YES” and then change their mind and say, “NO.” I know that’s a lot to take in, but the main thing to remember about consent and sexual activity is that you need clear and constant communication.

Texas is one of the top 10 states for growing grapes and its wineries consistently nab top 10 lists and industry awards. Here are four spots to enjoy Texas wines.

Fall Creek vineyard started in the mid-1970s, one of Texas’ first wineries.
FALL CREEK Another long-standing winery is Fall Creek Vineyards, located about 25 miles south of Austin. Ed and Susan Auler started the vineyard in the mid-1970s, which is why the couple is known as the “First Family of Texas Wines.” But don’t make the mistake of assuming grapes are a new industry to Texas. They will quickly point out that the Spaniards brought grapes to the region before California. Travel through the countryside outside Granbury to a small winery where small batches of wine are served both inside a rustic stone building or outside beneath a terrace and beside a bubbling fountain. GRAPEVINE The headquarters of the Texas Wine Industry calls this quaint town next to the Dallas/Fort Worth International Airport home, which is ironic since no wineries exist here. What you will find are seven winery tasting rooms. Start with Messina Hof on Main Street, the most awarded Texas wine in national and international competitions. Celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, the Grapevine location at the restored 1891 Wallis Hotel is the winery’s first urban tasting room. Visitors may choose from 40 different wines and snack on gourmet food items.
CROSS TIMBERS WINERY in an 1870s home offers a nice selection of wine, plus the ghost of the home’s former owner, Patti Weatherman, who died of pneumonia in the house’s kitchen. There’s also 12 unnamed spirits in the recreated barn — or at least that’s what the North Texas Paranormal Society claim. Just don’t miss tasting those 11 varietals grown in the Texas High Plains.
HOMESTEAD WINERY’S tasting room is also located in an ancient house where the floors tilt and visitors leave names on the walls. A wide variety of wines are available to taste in this unique Victorian but don’t miss the Chocolate Rose, a cabernet infused with dark chocolate. Neglect is a major reason couples struggle to maintain intimacy. Time and energy are taken away from the relationship because of work, hobbies, children, or even other relationships.
Couples must spend adequate time together to nourish their relationship and build intimacy. There is no adequate substitute for time. Research indicates that quality time together positively affects intimacy. Quality time together should provide the opportunity for meaningful conversations and the chance to do worthwhile activities. Neither quantity nor quality time alone is sufficient. Both are critical for the development and the maintenance of intimacy in the relationship. Therefore, couples must set aside the time necessary to achieve this outcome.
VIOLATIONS OF TRUST
Any violation of trust will produce negative consequences in a couple’s intimacy. A common example is infidelity. Violations of trust may also occur in other areas of the relationship. MALADAPTIVE COMMUNICATION PATTERNS
Poor or ineffective communication can pose a significant barrier to intimacy. Destructive communication includes patterns such as poor listening, ineffective ways of managing conflict or problem solving, criticism and defensiveness. DIFFERING DEFINITIONS OF INTIMACy
Differences in meaning of intimacy between partners may become obstructions to closeness and connection in some relationships. FEARS OF INTIMACY.
Fears of intimacy may originate in childhood and may be related to one’s family of origin. The fear of intimacy can also arise from difficult experiences in adulthood. These can be characterized by feelings of abandonment or by a betrayal of trust. Have you lost the intimacy you desire in one or more of your personal relationships? This will help to clearly identify and own your personal expectations, modify unrealistic ones and learn to communicate and negotiate personal expectations. 5. ADDRESS FEARS RELATED TO INTIMACY
In spite of the desire for intimacy, certain fears related to intimacy may be obstacles for some relationships. It is important to acknowledge the efforts and successes that you are experiencing in your relationship. Success that is recognized and celebrated will likely have a positive effect on your progress. Successful experiences with intimacy will create hope for future connection and closeness in your relationship. Q: How did you begin writing? A: I was busy with activities and didn’t read much during my early years. I certainly didn’t want to become a writer because they were all old dead men from Europe, and somebody needed to explain what they meant. That changed during the spring when I was in ninth grade. My teacher said he was sending me to a literary rally at Nicholls for English I. He told me to sit and practice writing a paragraph. I should write about a splinter.

How boring, I thought, walking to my desk. I wrote a grammatically-correct paragraph describing a sliver of wood and carried it to him. He said, “June, this is boring.” “I know, but you told me to write it.” And then he did the magic. He lifted his pencil and wrote, “Ouch!” He told me I should take it from the splinter’s perspective. Somebody just sat on it. Wow! A writer could do that? A writer could create things and people and bring them to life and make them say or do anything she wanted? That was it! I knew one day I would do that—become a writer. What that teacher did to inspire me was introduce me to modern writing and humor, which I love. Q: You started out writing plays. Can you tell us more about that? A: After my husband died, while my kids were growing, I had completed a degree at Nicholls and started teaching. The desire to become a writer remained, but I drove my children to all of their practices and attended all of their activities and eventually met a wonderful man. I knew screenwriting paid well, so I read magazine articles and a book about how to do that. A script I wrote did well in a national contest. A producer loved my work and said as soon as I moved to L.A., go see him. I loved my own LA, and my family was here. I wasn’t about to move there. A one-act script I wrote aired on a Channel for the Arts in New Orleans. I gave up the idea of screenwriting and looked into writing stage plays. A one-act play I created won a contest in Boston and was produced Off-Off Broadway.
Q: How did you start writing novels and did you always want to write mysteries? A: At a playwriting conference, a top producer told me if I wanted to do well in that area, I would need to get involved in theater. But I didn’t want to. I only wanted to write. I met with a female producer who loved my writing but realized my troubling situation with any type of plays. She strongly suggested that I try novels. They weren’t easy to sell, she said, but they could be sold from anywhere. Thus I began the long process of learning to write books. I had no idea what type novel I wanted to try. Thorn Birds, was already done. So was War and Peace. The first novel I wrote was a drama, loosely based around my life, as are so many writers’ first attempts. That book never sold; they seldom do. I didn’t read many mysteries— but then I found Janet Evanovitch. Her first Stephanie Plum books made me happy. That was the kind of book I wanted to write—cozy mysteries that don’t throw blood in your face but often make you smile. I attempt this in my own series.
Q: Will all the books in your current Twin Sisters series be set in Sugar Ledge, Louisiana? Is the town based on a real place?

A: Yes, all of the books take place in fictional Sugar Ledge, a small bayou town that could be based on many down here.

Q: You also wrote a book about your mom, Nora 102 ½: A Lesson on Aging Well. Can you touch on how you came to write that book about Nora Shaw, a widowed former teacher and social worker? A: Everybody insisted I write a book about Mom, who lived close to relatives here and often visited her sister in Lafayette. Do you think “I love their style, it’s so ______ (fill in the blank …personal, cozy, sophisticated, timeless)? Do you look at the latest décor magazines and feel a little envy bubble up inside that says something along the lines of “ooh, if only…” If you do, then let’s chat about what style is and a bit about what it is not. Be forewarned: this article is not going to help you define a “design style”… there are loads of online quizzes that you can take if you are interested being BOHO Glam, Traditional, Rustic Modern etc. What I hope to do with this article is help you begin to get past all that once and for all.

Another fashion great, Bill Blass said “Style is primarily a matter of instinct.” My experience has shown that Mr. Blass was right on the mark in regard to the basic premise that style cannot be taught; it is inherent in one’s personality. Aesthetics develop over time if we are looking for inspiration and fashion is generally dictated by marketing, but your style comes solely from yourself. Personally, my style and my aesthetics have become more and more aligned with my personality as I’ve experienced life more fully, i.e. aged. I came from a very traditional and conservative household where individuality was not necessarily rewarded, however, I prefer to

Giorgio Armani is known for sophisticated, timeless elegance (which is not how I would be described.) In a 2009 Elle Décor article by Arlene Hirst he said: “…there is nothing to be gained by following transient trends, as this can lead you in all sorts of different directions and you can easily lose your own distinctive voice.” Sound familiar? Remember, style is not taste, and your personal style is yours and yours alone. Look around you, look at yourself, and consider: Am I being true to myself and am I truly representing the me that is unique. What emotions am I experiencing when I enter my home – the public areas – the private areas. Let me know what you come up with! I’m always interested in how people express themselves through their home. Design is creating something that you find both beautiful and functional. Taste (good taste anyway) will never hide or transform you, your personality. Style is knowing who you are and expressing it, being true to yourself. There is no good or bad when it comes to style.

orn in Opelousas, raised in Lewisburg, and prepped at Grand Coteau’s Academy of the Sacred Heart, Imani Guillory-Fruge’ is a St. Landry Parish original. The only child of Marie Yvonne and Elbert Lee Guillory, the former Senator, Imani was the model student, garnering numerous scholarships, awards, and honors in academic excellence and civic involvement. While attending Louisiana State University’s Paul M. Hebert Law Center, the Cajun Belle seemed destined for a career in law, perhaps even politics.
Imani’s overnight success as an accidental chef and the owner of her own business, Cajun Mama, surprises no one more than Imani herself.
Growing up Guillory, Imani admits a perfectionistic streak, being goal-oriented and driven, and a bit of a planner. Major life decisions were not left to chance, but carefully charted and diligently pursued: “I always had a path, and robotically pursued my goals, never exploring other options. I thought I had it all figured out.” Imani’s overnight success as an accidental chef and the owner of her own business, Cajun Mama, surprises no one more than Imani herself. Over the last two years, her life has taken an abrupt and fascinating turn. Imani has experienced firsthand that, sometimes, life is what happens while one is making other plans. The surprises have been life-altering and challenging, but always brought joy and blessings in their wake. Imani now takes life “one day at a time” and wouldn’t have it any other way.
EARLY LESSONS FROM LIFE
As a senator’s daughter, Imani was raised not only with certain advantages, but also with certain expectations. The Guillorys were “world travelers and explorers” with a zest for life, and enjoyed bringing their little girl on their travels to distant, exotic countries like Egypt and China. Although Imani often missed a lot of classroom time, she learned life lessons abroad, observing firsthand how other people, and especially other
children, lived. She saw how difficult or unfair life could be, but was also enriched by exposure to different customs and values. For a bright and curious-minded little girl like Imani, travelling the world was fun and exciting. Only retrospectively did she begin to plumb the richness and depth of these experiences.

Imani’s parents were always quick to point out how fortunate she was, but being merely thankful for one’s gifts was not adequate. One had to give back, because your blessings don’t count, unless you share them. Using one’s gifts to help others fulfill their own potential — service — was the only meaningful response. “My parents are giving, compassionate people who taught and led by example. They instilled in me the conviction that there is no greater calling than serving others. Mom was always organizing charity events and belonged to several nonprofits. One of my favorite expressions is ‘Thousands of candles can be lit from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened.’ For me, this saying exemplifies my parent’s social ethics. I hope to follow in their footsteps, and put their example into practice.” Both sides of Imani’s family value education and have degreed professionals: teachers, lawyers and nurses. For Imani, pursuing a higher education was “never a question.” Early on, she set a goal of becoming an attorney so that one day she could champion on behalf of the poor and disadvantaged. She was on her way to fulfilling that dream when she enrolled into law school at LSU. In Baton Rouge, she also immersed herself in political activities, becoming a Session Intern with the State of Louisiana Senate and House of Representatives, and also by managing the Social Media and Networking Team for her father’s 2009 and 2011 political campaigns when he ran for Senator. faceacadiana.com | FACE 43
LOVE FINDS IMANI
Making the decision to finish law school after having a baby was one of the most difficult times of her life.
While attending law school, Imani met her future husband, Jason P. Fruge, an engineer in the oil and gas industry from Cecelia. The two were introduced through a mutual friend, and felt an immediate attraction. Imani began daydreaming about sharing a future with Jason, and their relationship quickly became serious; however, she remained committed to finishing her J.D. and establishing a career. In 2014, Jason moved into Imani’s Baton Rouge apartment. They made a home together, and set a wedding date in 2017. They thought that they could not have children, so it would be “just the two of us.” Imani counted herself lucky to have found the man of her dreams. “He is my rock. I never stop telling him how lucky I am to have him.”

Jason and Imani had their next 5 years carefully planned: After law school graduation, she would take a year to get a postgraduate legal degree, specializing in taxation, then work for her father’s legal practice. Her father expected that Imani would take over his office someday. Jason would continue his path as an engineer in the oil industry, and work his way up in the company. They had it “all figured out.”
A NEW LOVE STEALS HER HEART
During her final year in law school, and over a year after Jason moved in, Imani noticed she wasn’t feeling quite herself. Suspecting a gallbladder issue, she set an appointment at Lourdes for pre-op screening, in preparation for a quick gall bladder removal surgery. It was an early January morning, exactly one week before her final semester at LSU law school commenced. Graduation was May, so scheduling the procedure well before class started was perfect timing.
First, Imani met with the nurse who performed the gall bladder ultrasound. Gently smiling, the nurse rendered her diagnosis: Pregnancy! Imani was 36 weeks along, and her baby due in three weeks on January 21. It was not unusual for Imani to skip her period for months at a time, and she did not “look” pregnant. The few pregnancy symptoms she had, she explained away. After all, she wasn’t supposed to be able to have a child! Imani and Jason were nearly speechless with shock at the news, but Yvonne Guillory knew exactly how to handle the situation, and was ecstatic at becoming a grandmother. Then, another surprise. Three days later, Imani went into intensive labor. After an emergency C-section, she and Jason welcomed their healthy baby boy into the world! Little Jason Paul Fruge, III, appeared on scene, transforming his parents’ lives forever: “The first moment I held him in my arms, my entire life instantly changed, “ Imani recalls, “Every cell in my body wanted only to love and take care of my baby.” The Dean at LSU Law School advised Imani to sit out the semester, and conclude her studies the next semester. The Guillory family was in full support. But against the Dean’s advice, Imani decided to graduate that spring. Grandma “Nana” Guillory stepped in to watch over her first grandchild while Imani finished school. Imani awoke every morning at 4:45 a.m., pumped breast milk, then got dressed and ready for the hour commute from Lafayette to Baton Rouge to be in class by 8:00 a.m. Some days, she didn’t make it home until 6 p.m. She would study and do as much work on breaks as possible, so that she could spend time with her little one when she got home. Nana took care of him all day, so he was in great hands. “Still, he wasn’t in my hands,” Imani regrets. “I missed out so much on his first months of life, because of my dedication to finishing school. As difficult as it was, I kept reminding myself that I was doing it for him!” Making the decision to finish law school after having a baby was one of the most difficult times of her life, but with the support of her husband, friends and family, and their many prayers, she made it through.

A career in law will always be there, but my son won’t always be a baby, and I want to have as much time as possible with him in these early years. I won’t miss another moment.”

Being Cajun Mama allows me to express and share my love for my community. I know all of my customers personally, their daily lives. I’m there to help them celebrate their major milestones, but also the small things, too. I love having that one-on-one connection with them. One quiet December morning, as baby Jason Paul slept peacefully in her arms, Imani started planning her day. Christmas was around the corner, and her thoughts turned to holiday gift ideas. Imani decided to offer her homemade quiche pies as gifts, and posted on Facebook that she was taking orders. The first day, she received 60 orders. She was shocked by the response: “I never expected it!” The “Loaded Cajun” was born, and has remained her number one best seller. Imani had planned to sell pies only for the Christmas season, but orders came pouring in through the New Year. She then decided to stop taking orders after New Year’s – but then Mardi Gras came. The Cajun Carnival was her next creation, loaded with homemade boudin from her grandmother’s boudin recipe and topped with spicy cracklins. Other than Facebook postings, Imani has never advertised, and credits her success completely to word of mouth.

I have a full, robust family life. Taking care of my family is my priority and passion. I prepare all of our meals, run the household, make our travel plans, and get to spend every day with my son. He’s too wonderful.” Imani began spending every moment making a comfortable, loving, and happy home for her “guys,” and it was during this time that the idea of “Cajun Mama” was born.
Imani knew how to stir a pot since she was a small kid, and spent a lot of time with her parents in the kitchen: “Mom and dad were excellent chefs, who loved preparing meals, although they had different tastes in their choices of cuisine. My maternal grandmother is the ultimate Cajun grandmother. My mother is also very traditional, whereas dad is experimental, preferring fusion dishes. Our spice and herb cabinet could have been a room of its own. Everything was made from scratch, nothing from a box.” For the first few months, the Guillorys observed their daughter’s fledgling business with mild disbelief, and dismissed it faceacadiana.com | FACE 47

somewhat as a hobby, but once her sales went nationwide, “that was the turning point for them. My family’s reaction was ‘WHAT? Your whole life you’ve planned for career in legal and community service — now suddenly you have a cooking business?’ Their initial, casual reaction turned into to amazement — we all were taken by surprise by the success. It was never planned. They began to realize this was serious.” To keep pace with demand, Imani rents a commercial kitchen. After her family falls asleep, she goes to work. Putting on her favorite music, she prepares each pie by hand, hand-cutting the

When the great flood of 2016 devastated Acadiana, displacing thousands and leaving countless others destitute, Imani wasted no time reaching out to her community, and turned to Facebook once again, taking food orders and home addresses from the hungry. Imani, with the help of her mother, cooked hundreds of plate lunches, which she, her husband, father, and brother personally delivered to residents in Youngsville, Scott and Lafayette. She recalls one woman who had taken 8 people into her home, and 3 more people staying in an RV in her front yard. Imani brought them a three-day supply of food. “They cried and I cried with them. They called me a Good Samaritan. I told them, ‘I’m not being a Good Samaritan, just let me feed you.’” Although she has deferred her legal career, Imani has found an alternate, yet simple and profound way to make a difference in the lives of others. The experience was touching and transformative, and she began to appreciate the social impact and value of her enterprise. “I was grateful to help the few people that I did.”

meats, chopping the vegetables, and seasoning the batter. In a 4-hour period, she can bake around 200 pies. Most of the ingredients are locally sourced and always fresh. During Lenten season, Imani offers seafood pies, The Big Cajun Catch. Local orders taper to about 130-150 per week, but nationwide orders are usually double, averaging at about 200-250 per week. After Lafayette, Dallas is her second largest market, with California closing in at third. Orders also come from the Midwest, Arizona, and even Alaska.
Cajun Mama sponsors local charities and donates pies to silent auctions, and has been a food sponsor for Acadiana’s premiere fundraiser, The Hearty Party! for Camp Bon Coeur, a non-profit residential summer camp for children. “I don’t want to give this up.
