Come Home, Louisiana The job you want. The place you love.

Ah, the one that got away‌. we can all think of a close friend or family member who left Louisiana for what may have seemed like greener pastures in the form of a career. But we know better. We have it pretty good here in the Bayou State. Not only is Louisiana a great place to be, for our amazing food, excellent quality of life and rich culture, but also for our thriving economy. In fact, we have more jobs than we have people to fill them, so a campaign has been launched to try to bring Louisiana natives back to their home state. Louisiana Economic Development (LED) recently launched Come Home, Louisiana, a movement we can all get behind. The campaign is aimed at inspiring those who have left Louisiana to come back to live and work here. The job you want, in the place you love. Come Home, Louisiana is tied to LED’s new website, LouisianaJobConnection.com, a free site that connects job seekers with employers. Users can submit their resumes and be matched with relevant career opportunities. Already more than 15,000 people have uploaded their resumes.

Why you should

TOP 10 REASONS to come back home.

1

WE HAVE JOBS Louisiana’s economy is strong and leading companies are hiring. We may just have the job you want in the place you love.

OUR ECONOMY IS GROWING

2

As an emerging economic development leader, Louisiana ranked 3rd in 2014 for economic growth potential by Business Facilities magazine.

According to a 2014 study by Harvard and the Vancouver School of Economics, Louisiana is home to the five happiest cities in the country: Lafayette, Houma, Shreveport-Bossier, Baton Rouge and Alexandria.

FAMILY-FRIENDLY

Bring the kids. With over 400 festivals and plenty of outdoor events, there is never a shortage of things to do in Louisiana’s family-centric culture.

YOUR ROOTS ARE HERE Grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and friends are waiting for your return to enjoy the holidays and celebrate special occasions together.

6

GREAT OUTDOORS Hikers and hunters alike revere Louisiana for its natural beauty and abundant wildlife, and anglers appreciate the Sportsman’s Paradise as one of the top fishing destinations in the world.

CULTURE, MUSIC AND MORE From the food we eat to the music we love, Louisiana wears its joi de vivre on its sleeve. Don’t worry about finding an excuse to celebrate — whether it’s Mardi Gras or homespun celebrations, we’ve got you covered.

9

THE PEOPLE Yes sir. Yes ma’am. Please and thank you. Manners go a long way, and it’s clear our families raised us right. Come home to Louisiana, and remember why they call it Southern Hospitality.

So Much to Love Louisiana is experiencing exciting growth. Thankfully, the small things we love haven’t changed a bit. From historic landmarks and scenic skylines, to hometown menus that stand the test of time, sometimes more of the same is a good thing. Home to five of the happiest cities in the nation, Louisiana is known for its warm people and joie de vivre. With a steady lineup of festivals, world-renowned cuisines and cultural events, every day is cause for celebration. Plus, with 17 historic sites and 22 state parks our great outdoors are always within reach. On top of that, we enjoy a comparatively low cost of living, which means more saving and more security. In other words, Louisiana truly has the best of both worlds.

Louisiana is Calling. Spread the Word. If you know people who left, it’s time to encourage their triumphant return. The Come Home, Louisiana campaign gives you tools to help inform our ex-pats about the great opportunities waiting for them back home. Join the movement and help spread the word by posting on social media with the hashtag #ComeHomeLA or by sending an e-card to someone you miss and encouraging them to come home. Great resources can be found at ComeHomeLouisiana.com or at Facebook.com/ComeHomeLouisiana. ComeHomeLouisiana.com

LOUISIANA PROUD In 2013, for the fourth time in five years, Southern Business & Development magazine recognized Louisiana as the South’s State of the Year, thanks to significant growth in national rankings and economic progress.

ACADIANA LIFE Come Home, Louisiana continued >>

Alix Gonsoulin — A Comeback Story Even though Alix Gonsoulin moved to Manhattan for a career in design, she carried a little bit of Louisiana with her. She’d host gumbo night for friends and bring Popeye’s when she watched the Saints with other ex-pats. It wasn’t much, but it was the best she could do. Everything changed when Stuller, Inc., a leading international jewelry manufacturer based in her hometown of Lafayette, approached her about a job. She jumped at the chance to take on a new challenge in her career and be back home in the place she loved. A conversation with Alix Gonsoulin, a hometown girl with a great comeback story: FACE: Why and when did you leave Louisiana? Alix: I left Louisiana in the summer of 2007. I moved to NYC to pursue a career in design and experience life somewhere else. FACE: What did you miss the most about home when you were away? Alix: Family, friends, music, food and Mardi Gras. The overall lifestyle really. A balance of work and play. The energy. FACE: Why did you decide to move back? Alix: I was given an opportunity to work with Stuller, one of the leading jewelry manufacturers in the country. I was already in the jewelry industry so it was a major opportunity for me. I could stay in the career I loved and get even more exposure and opportunity. When I first toured the facility at Stuller, I really knew I had a future there. Walking through the huge building I saw the potential that exceeded my opportunities in NYC, which shocked me. FACE: What would be your advice to other Louisiana natives who are considering coming back? Alix: Go to LouisianaJobConnection.com and post your resume. Look into all of the amazing companies that are offering jobs. You can move back to Louisiana and not only continue on your career path, but gain so much … quality time with family, the culture you love, work/life balance, etc. FACE: What are some of your favorite things about Louisiana/Lafayette? Alix: I think I would have to say the festivals. I’m kind of a festival junkie. Going to festivals you have an amazing mix of people, music, dancing, food and art. It’s a true mix of everything I love about Louisiana. 12 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

Youngsville Boy Donates Water Buffalo, Becomes Published Artist Seven-year-old Youngsville boy Oliver Gallagher watched his friend donate a flock of chicks to a Heifer International family with the money she made selling homemade cookies. Oliver (or Ollie) loved the idea of helping a needy family by donating an animal that could provide the family food as well as a way to earn income. So he set out to donate an animal himself. His ultimate goal was to make enough to donate a goat, so he used his creativity to make that happen. Creating about 100 hand-drawn prints, Ollie went to Lafayette’s Second Saturday ArtWalk, where he planned on selling each print for $2. Very quickly, Ollie exceeded his goal and made twice as much as he’d hoped. Pooling his earnings with money from his own piggy bank, Ollie

pored over the animal options in the Heifer International Gift Catalog and eventually decided to donate a water buffalo. “I am really excited to be able to help Heifer and the families in need by doing something I love, which is art,” says Oliver. “And now I know that I can give something that will keep on giving as an animal becomes part of its new family.” Heifer International heard of Ollie’s story and asked him to create some original artwork to use along with his story in their National November Appeals campaign. Oliver created four new pieces of artwork including a goat, a water buffalo, a cow and a honeybee to be used in the campaign to inspire others across the country to donate to Heifer International. His artwork will be used in a mailer, telling

his story. It will also be used on postcards and stickers to help others across the nation be inspired to do what they can to help Heifer International. As a young philanthropist [and now published artist], Oliver has truly inspired our community to do good using their talents and passions. Since 1944, Heifer International has helped more than 20.7 million families, in more than 125 countries. Heifer International’s work is an example of best practices in development. They bring generations together with community building, and help families build knowledge and resources for sustainable progress out of poverty. COMMUNITY IMPACT Collin Raye – A Voice Undefeated Country music artist Collin Raye, a true hit maker of the 1990’s continues to make soulful, heartfelt music. With 24 top ten records, 16 #1 hits, and ten male vocalist of the year nominations, this truly electrifying performer remains one of the great voices of our time. Collin Raye’s passionate, soulful delivery has set country standards in such searing ballads as “Love, Me,” “In This Life,” “Not That Different” and “If I were you” and vivid rockers such as “My Kind of Girl,” “That’s My Story,” “I Can Still Feel You” and “I Want You Bad.” Collin shot to fame with “Love, Me” in 1991 which set the stage for a career built on meaningful and emotional songs. When “Little Rock”, an anthem for those struggling with addiction recovery, hit the chart in 1994, its video led to over 100,000 phone calls to Alcoholics Anonymous from folks seeking help in their addictions. “Not That Different” was a song that pleaded for tolerance. “In This Life” became a wedding favorite, and “I Think About You” won awards for its song and video which exposed the exploitation of women and children. Collin Raye has consistently used his stardom to advance social causes. Among the organizations he has supported are Boys Town, First Steps, Al-Anon, Special Olympics, Country Cares About AIDS, Catholic Relief Services, Parade of Pennies, Vanderbilt Children’s Hospital, The Tennessee Task Force Against Domestic Violence, The Emily Harrison Foundation, Childhelp USA, Silent Witness National Initiative, Easter Seals, The Life and Hope Network, and Make a Difference Day. It came as no surprise when in 2001 at the Country Radio Seminar, Clint Black presented Collin Raye with the organization’s Humanitarian of the Year award in recognition of Collin’s issue-oriented music and his tireless charity work. 16 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

Collin Raye’s new outreach is very personal. In 2010, after the loss of his precious 10 year old grandchild, Haley, Collin and his daughter Britanny (Haley’s mother) established The Haley Bell Blessed Chair Foundation to honor her memory. The Foundation supports and assists families of the cognitively and physically disabled with a primary emphasis on supplying wheelchairs and other necessary medical equipment to elevate the quality of life for the disabled family member in need. Collin wrote a very special song for Haley called, “She’s with Me,”, which carries a powerful message for families of special needs children. Additionally, in 2011 Collin released his first inspirational album, His Love Remains, which quickly shot to #1 on Amazon for inspirational and religious music. In 2013, Collin released “Still on the Line“, a tribute album to his longtime friend and country music legend, Glen Campbell, who continues to battle Alzheimer’s Disease. Collin continues to perform his traditional country music across America and abroad and has added Christian and Catholic concerts to his tour schedule as well. His autobiography, A Voice Undefeated, was released April 2014. Collin Raye will be performing at Our Lady of Fatima Church Thursday, December 11th, 7:00 p.m. Tickets available at KLFTradio.com, Acadian Religious & Gifts, Crossroads Catholic Bookstore and Our Lady of Fatima.

EAT WELL

How to Make the Perfect Holiday Cookie The cookie that makes everyone merry!

(BPT) - Many of our fondest childhood memories consist of spending time with friends and family, baking delicious holiday cookies and eyeing the beautifully wrapped presents under the tree. Embrace nostalgia and create the perfect holiday cookie that tastes delicious and is easy to decorate. Instead of displaying a gingerbread house, cut sugar cookies using some snowman, tree and star cookie cutters to set up a festive and tasty holiday scene. Scatter some coconut shavings or crinkled strips of paper for snow and place holiday candies behind the cookies, so they stand up all night long.

18 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

When making holiday cookies, remember to... • Cream the butter and vanilla together. Doing this beforehand will encapsulate the vanilla and prevent flavor loss. • Chill the dough in the fridge before shaping it. This will make for a softer cookie that is less likely to spread when baking. • Remove cookies from the oven a few minutes early, as they will continue to cook on the sheet. • Let the cookies cool completely before you begin to ice them.

Classic Holiday Sugar Cookies Position oven rack in the center of oven and preheat to 350 F. Line two large, heavy lightcolored baking sheets with parchment paper; set aside.

Ingredients

In a medium bowl, whisk flour, baking powder and salt until blended; set aside.

2 teaspoons baking powder

In a large mixing bowl, add butter, sugar, cream, vanilla and peppermint extracts; beat with a handheld mixer on medium speed until fluffy, which should take about two minutes. Scrape the sides of the bowl as needed. Reduce speed to medium-low; add eggs one at a time and beat after each addition. Using a rubber spatula, fold in the dry ingredients one-half at a time.

3/4 teaspoon salt

Divide dough into two even pieces, then press each piece into a disk shape. Wrap them tightly with plastic wrap and refrigerate for one hour. Dough should be cool and firm but easy to work with. In a small bowl, whisk confectioners’ sugar and flour until blended; set aside. Working with one piece of dough at a time, place on a clean, dusted surface. Roll dough to about 1/8-inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to cut shapes and transfer with a thin offset metal spatula to prepared cookie sheets. For even baking, do not overcrowd cookies. Gather remaining dough, cover with plastic and chill. Continue with second chilled dough. For best results, bake one sheet pan at a time until done, which should take about 10 minutes; remove and place cookies on wire racks to cool. Decorate and store in an airtight container.

3 cups all-purpose flour

1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened 1 cup superfine sugar (purchase at store or process granulated sugar for about 20 seconds in a food processor) 2 tablespoons heavy whipping cream 3 1/4 teaspoons Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract 1 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Pure Peppermint Extract 2 eggs 1/4 cup confectioners’ sugar (for dusting work surface) 1/4 cup all-purpose flour (for dusting work surface)

Peppermint Glaze and Peppermint Piping Icing 1 1/4 cups confectioners’ sugar 1 tablespoon meringue powder 2 tablespoons water 1/2 teaspoon Nielsen-Massey Pure Peppermint Extract (may substitute with Nielsen-Massey Madagascar Bourbon Pure Vanilla Extract) Variety of gel food colors

In a small bowl, whisk together sugar and meringue powder. Add water and peppermint extract, stir until smooth. Glaze cookies in desired colors and set aside to dry before piping. For the piping icing, remake the glaze recipe and add additional confectioners’ sugar, one tablespoon at a time until desired consistency is reached. Divide icing into small bowls; add desired gel colors. Select pastry tips, prepare pastry bags and creatively pipe icing onto glazed cookies. faceacadiana.com | FACE 19

EAT WELL

10 TIPS for Enjoying Holiday Foods to the Fullest Without Weight Worries (BPT) Fun, family, food — the holidays are packed with enjoyable activities. But hectic schedules, holiday stress and tasty indulgences at every turn can lead to a few extra pounds by the year’s end. Fortunately, with a few smart strategies, joyful eating doesn’t have to result in holiday weight gain. Dr. Aimee Gould Shunney, licensed naturopathic doctor specializing in women’s health and family medicine says to forget the all-or-nothing attitude during the holiday season. “Depriving yourself of holiday foods isn’t part of a healthy eating strategy and it’s no fun! It will make you more likely to overeat other foods and less likely to feel satisfied. Allow yourself a small portion of your favorite food and enjoy it.”

Be Realistic Setting goals to lose weight over the holidays is unrealistic. Strive to maintain your weight and not gain.

Don’t Skip Meals Skipping meals will cause your blood sugar to drop, making you irritable and causing you to burn calories less efficiently. You are also more likely to overeat if you arrive at a party famished.

Eat Slowly Chew your food thoroughly so you can taste it and enjoy it! Plus, chewing well aids in the digestion process. Remember, it takes up to 15 minutes to feel the effects of food.

Eat a Light Snack Having a small piece of fruit, yogurt, cheese, or almond butter on an apple or banana before going out will make you less likely to binge on fattening or sweet foods later.

Exercise Classes and group activities are great, but this time of year it’s extra helpful to have a form of exercise in your pocket that can be done on your own schedule, like walking, running, swimming, or doing an exercise video. Another option: Grab a family member or the dog and go for a walk before or after a large meal. It’s a great way to get some time with a loved one, or maybe a bit of alone time for yourself.

Focus on Life’s Sweet Moments Sometimes, when things get stressful and hectic, dessert or a glass of wine can seem like the quickest, easiest way to reward yourself. But does it really get the job done? And more importantly, does it serve you long-term? Make a list of all the things that bring you pleasure and joy. Try to do one every day.

Choose Your Beverages Wisely Alcohol is high in calories - about 7 calories per gram. Liquors, sweet wine, and sweet mixed drinks (holy eggnog!) contain 150-450 calories per glass. Try to alternate your alcoholic beverage with water or a fruit juice spritzer.

Make a Plan Decide when you are done. When you have tried a little bit of all your favorite foods and feel satisfied, put your napkin on your plate, have a mint or a piece of gum, and pour yourself a glass of water to sip.

20 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

“Allow yourself a small portion of your favorite food and enjoy it.”

Be Selective Take small portions of all your favorite foods, emphasizing protein, vegetables, and high-fiber options. Don’t eat sweets or carbohydrates alone, and keep your protein intake regular throughout the day.

Eat Omega-3 Fats Fish oil is important all year long for its anti-inflammatory properties and proven ability to reduce risk for heart disease, improve insulin sensitivity, decrease pain, and improve age-related cognitive function. A fish oil supplement like Nordic Naturals Ultimate Omega – I recommend two soft gels two times a day – is a great way to promote a healthy mood while supporting blood sugar balance, body composition, and overall health during the holidays.

HEAD

to

TOE I N FA N T A N D CHILDREN’S

Shunney reminds people it’s important to maintain perspective during the holidays. “Overeating one day won’t make you gain weight. It takes days of overeating to do that,” she says. “Choose your foods wisely, eat healthful foods more often, and limit fatty foods, sugars and alcohol. If you overindulge at a party, put it behind you. The most important things to remember are balance and moderation.”

CELEBRITY ADVICE

Our Recommended Picks to Shake It Off

Shake It Off Do you ever have times when you’re just stuck in a rut? Maybe you got some bad news or your barista made your vanilla latte with decaf and that’s the only thing on your mind for the rest of the day. If you’re like me, you tend to worry about things you don’t have any control over; it’s crazy how just one little thing can really put a damper on your mood. Sometimes you don’t even know why, but you just feel as if you’re having an off moment, an off day or even an off week. It happens to all of us, but here are a few tricks to help you get out of your rut.

Sleep it off. If you are having a bad day and can’t seem to shake it, sometimes the best thing to do is take a nap — or call it a day and go to bed early. Relaxation is the perfect remedy for a bad day. A little extra snuggling time with Evan in the morning is always guaranteed to start my day off with a smile. Laughter really is the best medicine. Watch a funny movie, or ask a friend to help cheer you up. Once you start laughing, your body will produce serotonin and you’ll instantly feel better.

Just dance. Whether you grab a friend or you’re alone in your underwear rocking out into your hairbrush, a little music and dancing will cure any funk. Go all out and be goofy and obnoxious; it will get your mind off whatever was bothering you. How else do you think I perfected my robot moves?

Laught It Off. If you’re not familair with comdian and writer Mindy Kaling, you should be. The Mindy Project finds her as an Ob/Gyn doctor balancing her personal and professional life and quirky co-workers, with humor galore!

These are all easy ways to help you forget about whatever has brought you down. What other ways do you have to shake off a bad day?

PETS

Prepping for Cold Weather? Don't Forget Your Pet! (BPT) - Winter weather affects pets just like their people. While you are taking precautions to protect yourself from cooler temperatures and environmental changes, you need to safeguard your dogs and cats, too.

Daily Dressing Fluctuating seasonal temperatures, changing weather conditions and daylight savings time make it necessary for you and your dog to dress for warmth, dryness and comfort, especially when you both are walking in the morning and evening hours. Pet owners need coats with lots of pockets for pick-up bags, treats and leash so you will always be ready no matter what the weather forecast. For your pet, consider a full weather jumpsuit or doggy rain coat that is breathable, soft nylon that doesn’t make noise when dogs move around. Plus, it’s easy to put on and keeps your dog’s back, legs and chest comfortably warm. Some even have a hood to protect the neck and head! Remember, buy pet gear big enough so that you can layer it with a sweater when it gets colder. Also, consider a dog coat in a bright color like orange for maximum visibility.

Reactions to Weather Some pets feel stress during changing weather conditions, especially when there is a drop in barometric pressure. Additionally, since dogs can hear at much higher frequencies and smell between 1,000 and 10,000 times better than humans, they can hear and smell a storm coming. If you have a dog that hides, whines or pants prior to a storm, plan ahead by keeping track of the daily weather reports and checking the barometer. To ease pet tension, use crates, soothing music, pheromone diffusers and anxiety-reducing apparel.

Pet Play As the days grow shorter and temperatures drop, you may be tempted to limit your dog’s exercise routine. Don’t. While the weather may force you indoors, you can keep your pet active and beat away seasonal blues by rotating her toys. Make rotating toys easier by introducing new toys each month with a pet toy subscription.

Pet care and lifestyle expert Charlotte Reed shares her top tips for dealing with changing weather conditions and other seasonal concerns. 24 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

Indoor and Outdoor Allergies This time of the year, people and pets who have allergies to pollen really feel it. They may also be allergic to the dust and mold spores that the heating system kicks out. While humans may have runny noses and watery eyes, pets can have itchy skin. You can avoid costly vet bills with a veterinary developed pet skin care line of shampoo, topical spray and ear cleaner used regularly to keep your dog and cat in the best of health.

Treat for a Purpose Changing weather can lower an animal’s resistance to disease and bring on ailments like a cold or arthritis so supplement your pet’s diet with healthy snacks. Lincoln Bark’s unique and functional dog treats are powered by Chia seeds, classified as a super food by the Food and Drug Administration. These tiny seeds are loaded with protein, fiber, omega-3 fatty acids, phytonutrients, all nine amino acids, antioxidants, are gluten-free and are beneficial to pet health.

Flea and Tick Prevention Just because it’s not summer doesn’t mean you can forget about flea and tick season. Ticks populate in piles of fallen leaves. Clean up leaves and other yard waste as soon as you can and discourage your pet from walking in them. In warmer climates, fleas can live throughout the year, especially if they get into your home. There are a number of generic flea and tick products on the market to provide your pet with flea and tick protection throughout the year.

Road Safety There are many seasonal driving hazards. Coupled with shorter days and windy, rainy conditions, it is important to limit driver distraction, especially if your pet is in your vehicle, too. To limit driver distraction, use a crash-tested harness, carrier bag, or a comfortable, easy-to-use car seat designed to protect dogs.

Perfecting

the Holiday Dinner Party (BPT) - Some might call the dinner party a lost art, but gathering family and friends around the table to eat great food, drink fantastic wine and enjoy each other’s company is the perfect way to celebrate the holidays. Creating an elegant, effortless evening to remember is easier than one might think. Perfecting the dinner party is about putting people at ease and creating an environment that encourages conversation and laughter - the two most important elements of a successful dinner party. So, instead of trying to impress guests with fancy culinary skills or decorating prowess, focus on five simple tips: Light can be the life of the party. From glowing centerpieces to sparkling votive candles, elegant party lighting is always a bright idea. Candles set the mood and create ambiance - and allow your guests to truly shine. Let the wine flow. The right wine can perfect the moment and no dinner party would be complete without it. Greet guests with a bright and beautiful sparkling rose and keep it flowing during the cocktail hour. During dinner, offer one red and one white wine. Santa Margherita Chianti and Pinot Grigio are two delicious options with wide appeal. Of course dessert is a food group! Dessert is the perfect way to end an amazing meal. Leave your guests floating on air with angel food cake topped with a Prosecco-infused frosting. Don’t let guests leave empty-handed. Giving guests a little something to take home when they leave extends the good vibes. Say goodnight in a unique way by sending guests home with a bottle of wine or votive candle to re-create the magic in their own home. Remember to breathe. If you’re having fun, your guests will too. Take a deep breath and, while you’re at it, give your red wine a little air, too. Aerators open up the aromas and flavors, making every sip better.

DIY HOLIDAY

By Audrey Coots

Wrapping can often be the most visually stunning, yet frustrating part of the holidays. Do you want to wrap all of the presents in one type of printed wrapping paper, or do you want to use different wrapping papers that match? How about those pesky (but oh, so beautiful) bows and ribbons? Decisions, decisions!

32 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

faceacadiana.com | FACE 33

DIY HOLIDAY If you like to be creative in your holiday wrapping, then creating ornaments for the tree are probably your happy place. This season, you can add to the traditional popcorn-on-a-string ornaments with other natural items you can probably find near your home, such as pinecones, which hold glue and glitter wonderfully. Even small, carefully chosen sticks can be useful in decorating a beautiful, unique Christmas tree; cleaned and glued together properly, they are lightweight enough to hang in abundance and work great when you’re going for a low-key look. You can also use clear bulbs (or clear DIY ornaments), which can easily be taken apart and filled with whatever you choose to make your own one-of-a-kind ornaments. Fill with pretty strips of paper, cover in newsprint, paint, or sprinkled with glue and glitter, and voila-- you have the perfect, unique Christmas tree ornament that can double as a take-home gift for guests.

Consumed with figuring out what to get someone special? You can’t go wrong with food! If you know what their favorite beer is, grab a case or two and stick some googly eyes and pipe cleaner antlers on the bottles for “Reinbeer.” This would also work for Rootbeer! For another consumable gift, try filling Mason jars with something delicious such as your own trail mix, chocolate candy, the ingredients for a simple soup, cookies, or just cocoa powder and marshmallows for the hot chocolate lover in your life. You can get creative with the outsides of the jars, painting them or adding little flairs of holiday spirit, such as a candy cane or cinnamon sticks.

HOME

Deep Dreams BEHR(R) Paint Colors: (BPT) - It’s a strategy interior designers often use to create stunning rooms that wow the instant someone enters them: the use of creative color. Homeowners looking to deliver impressive interior style can take cues from what will be the trendiest hues of 2015 and beyond. Homeowners can convey a variety of emotions in their favorite rooms by embracing different color palettes. From the sweet charm of pastels,

to the comfortable ambience of neutral tones, to the majestic deep and bright tones, Behr Paints has pulled together trends to capture the balance needed to create inviting, inspiring and dramatically transformed rooms. Behr’s 2015 Color Trends provide inspiration and guidance for selecting color for their projects with a glimpse of how rooms appear in different tones. The top four on-trend color themes include:

Dreamy, mythical Landscape Liaison T15-1, Seared Gray T15-2, Essential Teal T15-3, Your Majesty T15-4, Heritage Oak T15-5

Dreamscape Gray BEHR(R) Paint Colors: A modern approach to pastels with paints

Frosted Pastels Pastel paints create stimulating environments when combined with zesty bright accents (top, left); the contrast of pastel and striking accent can be balanced by touches of mauve and black created by floor stencils, fireplace tile and window treatments. Deep Dreams An invitation to a tranquil escape into a dreamy, mythical landscape, the Deep Dreams palette (top, right) features tranquil colors like teal, charcoal and eggplant that offer an oasis of relaxation in a bedroom. Balance is created with white trim, gold metallic and pops of citron yellow in the decor accessories. Lush layers of patterned textiles invite fuchsia, bright green and purple into the mix.

Social Brights A refined balance of brights and neutrals, lighter and darker colors, Social Brights (top right) features pure blue, red, purple and orange that feel energetic, draw attention and create a lively place for conversation. Shades of gray are the perfect balance on adjoining walls, trim or ceiling. Other intense hues make playful accompaniments in decorative accessories for tabletop and shelving displays.

T15-6, Secret Blush T15-7, Elusive Blue T15-8, Dandelion Tea T15-9

Nuanced Neutrals Weathered, rustic colors are the hallmark of today’s mid-range neutral palette, spotlighted in Nuanced Neutrals (bottom right). This trend features dusty aqua paneling and light tan walls with the companions of charcoal, lively copper and citrus orange accents. Touches of dusty earth tones ensure neutral rooms create function and comfort for the ultimate in interior styling.

HOME Simple Steps for Protecting Your Home During the Holidays (BPT) - When you think of the holidays, celebrations, presents and friends likely come to mind, not crime. Unfortunately, burglaries increase at this time of year, and your home could be a target. With a few simple safety precautions, you can protect your property, your family and your valuables now and well into the new year.

“Taking steps to protect your home during the holidays isn’t radically different from what most people should be doing the rest of the year,” says Thomas Leman, a retired 27-year veteran of the police force and criminal justice professor at Argosy University Online.“The problem is that most people get lured into a false sense of security and tend to let their guard down, thinking that crime won’t happen to them.”

Step 1:

Step 2:

Step 3:

Decorate with Care

Lock It Up

Be a Tricky Traveler

When it comes to holiday decorations, modesty is definitely the best policy, says Leman. “While you may love the look of a Christmas tree in your front window, expensive decorations on display can be a signal that there are valuables inside your home worth a criminal’s time. Gifts under the tree are the most blatant of these displays and are a welcome invitation for thieves.” Leaving gifts tucked away until the last possible minute is a quick and easy safety precaution. If you must display presents, make sure they are out of sight from any windows or doorways.

Whether you are home, running errands or away on vacation, take care to close and lock all doors and windows. Remember to set alarms, too. “Given that most people have extra valuables and gifts in their homes during this time, it’s a good idea to practice home safety whether you’re there or not,” says Leman. Leman adds that a simple dowel placed in a sliding glass door or window can be an inexpensive way to secure vulnerable entrance points. “Alarms or closed circuit video surveillance systems are a great and inexpensive way to protect your home,” he adds.

Be proactive about home safety if you have holiday travel plans. Never let mail or newspapers pile up at your home, as it is an instant indicator you are not there. Have a neighbor collect mail and newspapers or have your service stopped by calling the post office and newspaper provider. “Set your lights and television on timers,” suggests Leman, who also advises homeowners to have a neighbor park their car in your driveway intermittently to keep up the appearance that someone is coming and going.

Step 4

Step 5

Light the Night

Dispose Smartly

A well-lit and well-groomed home provides an important measure of safety. “The better the lighting in your home and yard, the fewer places there are for criminals to lurk,” says Leman. USAA, a leading provider of banking, insurance and investment services to the military community, recommends the 3 foot/6 foot rule: trim branches to 6 feet off the ground and shrubs down to 3 feet to minimize hiding places for burglars.

It’s best not to alert strangers to the new 70-inch flat screen in your home by leaving the box on the curb for refuse pickup. “When it comes to big-ticket items and valuables, boxes on the curb can be an advertisement for the new valuables in your home,” cautions Leman. “Take the time to break down boxes and recycle them or put them on the curb over time and inconspicuously,” he says.

BEAUTY The Do’s and Don’ts of DIY Beauty The natural beauty movement is gaining momentum with more women seeking all-natural ways to look and feel fabulous.

DO

(BPT) - A big part of this DIY trend is creating beauty products at home. The benefits are many: products can be completely customized, women know exactly what ingredients are used, and oftentimes, they save themselves money, too. If you want to join the DIY beauty movement, consider these top do’s and don’ts from the experts at Aura Cacia:

DON’T

Develop Your Own Body Spray

Forget to Use Pantry Staples

Not only are perfumes costly, they are filled with chemicals. By using essential oils, you can create natural body spray in minutes. For an amazing DIY Patchouli and Rose Body Spray, simply mix these ingredients in a small spray bottle or atomizer:

Some of the most commonly used ingredients in DIY beauty recipes can be found right in your kitchen cabinet. Learn more about pantry staples like sea salt, oats, honey, eggs, course sugar and coconut oil, and how your beauty recipes can benefit from them.

4 ounces purified water 19 drops bergamot BF essential oil 19 drops patchouli essential oil 19 drops lemon essential oil 3 drops rose otto or rose absolute essential oil

DO Learn More About Essential Oils Essential oils are the highly concentrated aromatic essences of plants. They are 75 to 100 times more concentrated than the oils in dried herbs. Using essential oils in DIY beauty products is a wonderful option, but they must be treated with safety and respect.

52 FACE | DECEMBER 2014

DON’T Use Disposable Containers DIY beauty embraces the idea of natural wellness not only for the family, but also for the Earth. Always opt for reusable containers when possible, as they reduce waste and maintain the integrity of homemade products longer. BPA-free plastic containers and glass alternatives are both great options you can use again and again.

DO Make Health and Beauty Essentials for the Whole Family DIY health and beauty isn’t just for women, the entire family can benefit from natural products you can make in your own home. From luxurious body soaks for mom and back rub blends for dad, to baby balms and infant message oils, there are many easy-to-follow recipes at www.auracacia.com.

It’s a question that has been up for debate for decades: Is it a fashion faux paus to wear white after Labor Day? Answer: NO! Say hello to a winter white wardrobe as the fashion world continues to break antiquated rules.

STYLE Fashion is much more relaxed about what colors to wear and when; particularly in the south where the temperature can vary from the mid 50’s to high 70’s throughout the winter months. So it can actually make good fashion sense for comfort, as well as making an unexpected choice standout. The question should be: How do you pull off wearing white in the winter without looking like a Fashion Don’t? Here are a few key things to remember that will help you embrace the winter white look and make a tres chic blanc fashion statement that will have all heads turning to check you out and not looking like a ‘fashion don’t’. After all, rules are made to be broken, right? Select fabric and textures that are decidedly fall or winter, such as mohair, fur vest, cable knit sweater, or white cords. This will keep you within the boundaries of the season and add considerable interest to your overall look. Go for a monochromatic look for a more luxurious style. Outfits with a hint of metallic or shimmer can definitely glam up your look. Be conscious of fit and silhouette for a flawless white-out. Ill-fitting clothes or improper undergarments will make your look a fashion don’t. Add edge to your look by incorporating a stunning pop-of color or one statement detail to your overall look. Winter white pairs well with darker colors such as navy, black, and gray. The white will balance out the look keeping it clean and crisp. Not daring enough to wear stark white? Or it isn’t right for your skin tone? Consider adding stylish pieces in cream and ivory color palette that will compliment your skin tone. Accessorizing and layering (i.e., infinity scarf, floppy hat, opaque hose) is an easy way to add the fresh crisp style of white to your winter ensemble. Stay away from white shoes. It can be tricky to pull off no matter what the season and most times, it is a fashion don’t. Keep it simple and chic. Less is more. Don’t overload or go overboard. As Tim Gunn would say, “Edit. Edit. Edit.” Wearing white in the winter may seem like a risk, but it’s one that I encourage you to take. Julie Landry, Comptroller for Moss Motors, is Sharon Moss’ “right and left arm.” Julie worked for Billy Jack for seven years before Sharon took over. “There were people who didn’t believe in her, who didn’t think she could succeed. I watched as that opposition only made her stronger and more determined,” she said. “When we started in 1979 we were selling 30 Hondas a month, two Mercedes-Benz’s and three of BMW’s. And look at us now!” Julie said she’s learned a lot from Sharon. “No one else would have promoted me and allowed me to succeed like Sharon has. I mean, it was the 80s,” Julie said. “She taught me how to succeed in a maledominated industry.” According to Julie, one of Sharon’s gifts is her ability to surround herself with the best people. “She knows how to read people,” she said. “She puts people in the positions they’re best suited for.” The other ingredient is her competitive spirit. “When a new dealership would pop up and try to get ahead of us, Sharon would say, ‘Great. Bring it on!’” Having been with Moss Motors for over 35 years, Julie speaks fondly of her time there. “We have a saying that we’re the Moss family and it really is a family,” she said. “Sharon is always there for her employees and she appreciates the importance of health and well-being.” Julie is proud to have been at Sharon’s side through thick and thin. “I admire her courage and backbone. She’s one hell of a lady!”
