Ladies, I would like to introduce you to a new line exclusive to Vanessa V. called Escapada. The second I saw this line, I knew right away my customers would love it! Why? The line is very lightweight, which means it’s perfect for our spring and summers. The prints are vibrant and fun to wear, the pricing is excellent, the size range is from XS-XL, and lastly, something I feel is so important for busy women these days: Escapada consists of pieces that are casual enough for pool parties yet dressy enough for weddings. Getting the most out of your clothing, all the while feeling comfortable and beautiful, are components I look for in everything I bring into Vanessa V. We look forward to seeing you soon, where dressing you is our honor. –Vanessa

Happy Anniversary to FACE Magazine! June marks the 6th anniversary for FACE Magazine. When the publication was founded, the vision was to tell inspiring and informative stories as they relate to the women, families and the community that is Acadiana. At that time, no one could have imagined just how well received FACE would become; nor how many lives would be touched, as is evident by the wonderful letters we receive from our readers. Today, FACE is distributed monthly to over 125 fine retailers, boutiques and eateries throughout Acadiana, and is read online by more than 10,000 readers each month. As a publisher, it is humbling to know that FACE has so many
loyal followers. Your comments and interactions keep us grounded and focused, as we strive to keep FACE Magazine “Fresh, Inspirational and Current”. Although I could go on and on about the many accomplishments we’ve achieved over the past years, the real credit for our success is owed to you… our readers, advertisers, writers and staff (both past and present). Thank you for your continued support. I hope you have a wonderful summer. All the Best,
Flint

Acadiana Cane Cutters
Family Entertainment That’s Batting 1000 In 2010, Richard and Sandi Chalmers decided to bring something special to the Lafayette community; a summer collegiate league baseball team that revolved around the opportunity to provide amateur, college baseball players a chance to improve their skills, showcase their talents, and chase their dream of one day getting their shot to play for a Major League Baseball club. Three years later, the Acadiana Cane Cutters are a continually evolving hot spot for cool summertime entertainment, and the best place in the state to take in a wooden bat summer baseball game. From May to August, baseball fans can come out to see up-andcoming college talent featuring top recruits from powerhouse programs like the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, LSUEunice, Nicholls State, and even out of state schools like the University of Alabama, Texas A&M University, Missouri, and Cal State Bakersfield. The perks don’t end there. “The Acadiana Cane Cutters are more than just top-notch college baseball,” owner Sandi Chalmers began, “We are all about the complete family experience. Even though we are not a professional baseball team, we still model our games to give our fans an authentic minor league baseball feel. At Fabacher Field we have entertainment for all ages, including Duhon's Fun Jumps for the kids every night, hilarious in-game, betweeninning promotions, a variety of different theme nights and specials and giveaways such as a chance to compete to win a $2,300 diamond necklace from Paul's Jewelry. And it is all very affordable for families.” There certainly won’t be a shortage of things going on at Fabacher this summer. The Cane Cutters’ calendar for 2013 also includes Scout Night, an All-Acadiana Baseball and Softball awards ceremony, Military Appreciation Night, Bark at the Park for you and your dog, a mascot bobble head giveaway, Paul's Jewelry 8 FACE | JUNE 2013
In the Field of Dreams program, youth players get to take the field with the Cane Cutters, and have their names announced along with the Cane Cutter players’ names. They stay on the field for the National Anthem, giving parents a great photo opportunity and an unforgettable experience for the kids. (Similar programs are available for teams and birthday parties.)
Diamond Dash, Hollywood Night, an evening in the roaring twenties, Christmas Eve in July, and countless other theme nights. In addition to creative promotional nights, the Cane Cutters will also feature daily specials like Slippery Sundays with a waterslide, Free Fun Jumps Tuesdays for the young ones, Thirsty Thursdays Dollar Beer for the adults, C&G Boats Fireworks Fridays, and live music before every Wednesday home game. Said first-year general manager Jacob R. Andrews, “We are going to have a whole lot of fun at Fabacher this summer. I feel like we have a superb venue, a fantastic program, and are easily the place to be for the best live entertainment Acadiana has to offer. Take Military Appreciation Night for example; we’ll have a fighter-jet flyover, civil war re-enactors, and swearing in of new recruits pregame. In addition to that, we’ll have military equipment on-site from the Abbeville Louisiana Military Hall of Fame and Museum.”
In the Paul’s Jewelry Diamond Dash, between 30 and 40 contestants who have won a golden ticket through a variety of means (Facebook, radio, chosen from the stands, etc.), will go onto the field and dig for the diamond. The one who finds it, wins it! Visit Acadiana Cane Cutters Baseball on Facebook frequently to hear more about Diamond Dash.
The Cane Cutters kicked off the 2013 season by hosting the Brazos Valley Bombers to Fabacher Field, near Lafayette, on May 30. The team is a staple member of the six-member Texas Collegiate League. The league itself is entering its tenth season. The Cane Cutters will compete against league clubs from McKinney, Victoria, Kilgore, Bryan, and The Woodlands, Texas, in a 60 game season, with 30 of those games here in Louisiana. Marriage at the Zoo
By Flint Zerangue, Jr.
In late 2012, George Oldenberg, the Zoo of Acadiana’s owner, acquired a second giraffe to mate with their male giraffe. As an avid conservationist, Mr. George works in alliance with zoos from around the nation in an effort to breed rare species. This time, he felt that a special ceremony should be held for the two animals he intended to breed. On May 5th, the Zoo of Acadiana hosted a one of a kind celebration and marriage between Gabriel, the Zoo’s only giraffe for the past six years, and Evangeline, the Zoo’s most recent addition. It was truly a special event in which over two thousand fans of the Zoo came together to show congratulations and, of course, wish Gabriel and Evangeline good luck in their endeavors.

"...the Zoo of Acadiana hosted a one of a kind celebration and marriage between Gabriel, the Zoo’s only giraffe for the past six years, and Evangeline, the Zoo’s most recent addition."
Lea Loftin, the Zoo’s marketing and events director said, “We have people here from several states. It’s awesome to have the support of the people and hopefully by next summer we’ll have a newly born giraffe!” Although typical wedding fashion was not in order here, attendees came well decorated. Some wore fuzzy, animal print headbands and others came in full on giraffe costumes. With over 700 animals representing over 125 species, the Zoo of Acadiana has become a hot, local commodity. It has become a staple for school field trips and a family favorite for those seeking wholesome experiences. Although Mr. George (who is commonly referred to as “Master G” by his employees) probably has more fun than most of the patrons who visit his zoo, he works extremely hard to provide a fun, family environment for which our community should be proud. As a community, let’s continue to show support to Mr. Oldenberg, Evangeline, and Gabriel.

Keep Passing the Sugar
By Dr. Kelly Cobb
There is no excess in our bodies that make us unique in our ability to handle simple sugars. Refined sugar is “empty” calories because it lacks the natural minerals which are present in the sugar beet or cane. Eating refined sugar drains and leaches the body of precious vitamins and minerals through the demand its digestion, detoxification and elimination makes upon one’s entire system. So essential is the balance to our bodies that we have many ways to provide against the sudden shock of a heavy intake of sugar. Minerals such as sodium (from salt), potassium and magnesium (from vegetables), and calcium (from the bones) are mobilized and used in chemical transmutation; neutral acids are produced which attempt to return the acid-alkaline balance factor of the blood to a more normal state.
"The consumption of refined sugar is a glowing example of how one imbalance can trigger major disturbances in the body and lead to disease."
Sugar taken every day produces a continuously over-acid condition, and more and more minerals are required from deep in the body in the attempt to rectify the imbalance.
In our ever-expanding understanding of human health, we have come to the realization that our health is never as simple as it may seem. There is interconnectedness between the different biological systems in the body. Our understanding of these relationships requires a systems approach to health whereby the impact of each human biological system is evaluated in relationship to each other, not in isolation. The consumption of refined sugar is a glowing example of how one imbalance can trigger major disturbances in the body and lead to disease. In 1967, Dr. Martin classified refined sugar as a poison because it has been depleted of its life forces, vitamins and minerals. “What is left consists of pure, refined carbohydrates. The body cannot utilize this refined starch and carbohydrate unless the depleted proteins, vitamins and minerals are present.” Nature supplies these elements in each plant in quantities sufficient to metabolize the carbohydrate in that particular plant.
14 FACE | JUNE 2013
Finally, in order to protect the blood, so much calcium is taken from the bones and teeth that decay and general weakening begin. Excess sugar eventually affects every organ in the body. Initially, it is stored in the liver in the form of glucose (glycogen). Since the liver’s capacity is limited, a daily intake of refined sugar (above the required amount of natural sugar) soon makes the liver expand like a balloon. When the liver is filled to its maximum capacity, the excess glycogen is returned to the blood in the form of fatty acids. These are taken to every part of the body and stored in the most inactive areas: the belly, the buttocks, the breasts and the thighs.
"Any person 30% overweight for 30 years is likely to become a diabetic. " Excessive sugar has a strong mal-effect on the functioning of the brain. The key to orderly brain function is glutamic acid, a vital compound found in many vegetables. The B vitamins play a major role in dividing glutamic acid into antagonistic-complementary compounds which produce a

• Excessive intake of water or food • Weight loss despite decreased appetite • Nausea and/or vomiting or abdominal discomfort after eating • Weakness or excessive fatigue • Absence of menstruation in women or impotence in men • Blurred or poor vision • Poor wound healing or increased susceptibility to infection
Many people are standing on the cliff of pre-diabetes overlooking subtle symptoms. Any person 30% overweight for 30 years is likely to become a diabetic. Prostate cancer is also a serious health concern for men. It is the second most common cancer in men after skin cancer, and it is estimated that over 238,000 new cases will occur in 2013. However, regular screening isn’t encouraged. The U.S. Preventative Services Task Force only recommends screening for prostate cancer if you experience any symptoms of prostate cancer, including difficulty urinating, frequent urination, or sexually related pain. These symptoms, as mentioned earlier, might easily be dismissed or suffered without any consideration of medical attention. Even these lesser symptoms could signify disease. Whenever you can, talk to the fathers in your life about getting regular medical attention. They may thank you later for helping them preserve their “gift.”

DAILY DAD NEWS
United Fathers of America (UFA) Announce Father’s Day Boycott – Dads Refuse To Cook On Their One Day of Honor
Time to Turn the Tables By George Graham
From George Graham’s stories of Cajun Creole Cooking at AcadianaTable.com Not sure exactly how it happened, but there’s been a cruel trick played on the men of this world and I am out to correct the injustice. At some point in history, it seems there was a secret agreement among all women that the custom of Father’s Day is to be celebrated by dads everywhere toiling all day long, sweating in the sweltering Louisiana heat over a hot barbecue pit cooking up a big spread while the women relax in the shade sipping sweet tea. Not only does papa have to bring home the bacon, but on the one and only day of the year held in his honor, he has to cook it up on the grill.
Jockamo Chicken with Fettuccine in a Smoked Tasso Cream Reduction Prep time: 45 minutes Cooking time: 1 hour Serves: 4 • Water • Kosher salt • 1 cup olive oil
Give us a break.
• 1lb package of fettuccine noodles
It's time to turn the tables on mom. I’m laying down my fork and spatula. I'm proposing a boycott (appropriate name) or call it a sit-down strike at the dinner table to put an end to this travesty of tradition. This Father’s Day, I am proposing an easy recipe that every mom can make and every dad will rejoice in. It’s creamy, it’s spicy, it’s smoky and, best of all, this recipe features dad’s favorite — beer. As all Acadiana men know, Louisiana has a long beer-drinking history that dates back to the original Jackson Brewery in the late 1800s. Jax became one of the top beers in the country and other Louisiana 18 FACE | JUNE 2013
• 2 large skinless boneless chicken breasts • 2 tbsp Creole seasoning • 2 tbsps garlic powder • 2 tbsp black pepper • 2 cups all purpose flour • 1 stick butter, unsalted • 2 cups mushrooms, sliced large • I cup canola oil
• 1 cup diced onion • 1 cup diced celery • 1 cup diced green bell pepper
• 1 sprig rosemary • 2 tablespoons garlic, minced • 1 serrano chili pepper, seeded and diced small • 2 cups smoked tasso, chopped small • 1 bottle Jockamo beer (or a heavy lager beer) • 1 cup heavy whipping cream, plus more cream if needed • 1/2 lemon • 1/2 cup freshly grated Pecorino Romano cheese • 1/2 cup fresh cilantro, chopped
bottled brews have followed – Regal, Falstaff and Dixie to name a few. Most faded out, and a new group of craft beers has surfaced led in 1986 by the Abita Brewing Company located on the Northshore of Lake Pontchartrain. Abita has quickly gained cult status with serious beer-drinking dads who love their heady brews with catchy names. Jockamo is one of those — a pale ale with a copper color and a malty flavor. It’s time to brew up an original Father’s Day dish that balances the deep and spicy notes of the hops with the sweet backbeat of the malt. Two of my favorite Italian recipes are Veal Marsala and Fettucine Alfredo. So, for this Father’s Day, I put a Cajun Creole spin to these ethnic favorites. I am replacing the Marsala wine with Jockamo beer, chicken instead of veal, and I elevate the pasta with a smoky tasso cream reduction.
Cream reduction is a very common Louisiana cooking technique of sauce-making, and when combined with bold ingredients, it elevates a variety of Cajun Creole dishes. The only secret to a good reduction is to start with good cream. Grade A, heavy whipping cream is a must and a wide pan help the thickening process by expanding the surface area.
"This Father’s Day, I'm proposing an easy recipe that every mom can make and every dad will rejoice in."
The timeless French method of simmering cream slowly over a low fire creates bubbles that allow moisture - water - to escape. The result is a smooth, velvety reduction that coats the back of a spoon or any number of center of the plate choices - veal cutlets, lamb chops, fish filets.

A basic cream reduction serves as a medium for infusing flavor. In this dish we take a paneed boneless chicken breast that is lightly breaded and sauced with a mushroom and tasso-infused, cream reduction served over fettuccine. And in this version we spike the cream sauce with Abita's Jockamo, a bold and sassy brew with a character all its own. It’s that boldness that carries this dish and lays a solid foundation on which to build this reduction. So, I implore all you kitchen queens and black pot princesses out there, please give us a once-a-year break. Help put an end to this misguided madness. The fathers in your family will love this dish and will love you for making it, and making June 16 their one day of honor. Men, you can thank me later. In a large stockpot filled half way with water on a high burner, add salt and a couple of tablespoons of olive oil. Bring to a rolling boil and add the pasta. Stir to make sure all of the noodles are submerged and let cook until al dente. Once the noodles are done, strain through a colander and run hot water over them to eliminate any starchy residue. Move the colander to the side for later. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Place the chicken breasts between pieces of wax paper or plastic wrap. On a hard surface, pound the thickest part of the chicken breasts with a kitchen mallet or the back of a heavy pan. This doesn’t have to be exact, but try to get a uniform thickness for cooking evenly. Sprinkle both sides of the chicken with your favorite Creole seasoning along with garlic powder and black pepper. Drench the seasoned chicken pieces in all purpose flour with an even coating. Move to a platter.
I suggest the double boneless chicken breasts from the meat counter at Albertsons — a thick piece of chicken to ensure this recipe doesn’t dry out. Be sure to use fresh rosemary for this as it really makes a difference. As well, the freshly grated Pecorino Romano I buy at Fresh Market finishes it off deliciously. 20 FACE | JUNE 2013
In a large heavy skillet on medium heat, melt one stick of butter and add the olive oil. Add the sliced mushrooms and sauté until browned. Remove the mushrooms to a platter and keep warm.
In the same skillet on medium heat, add the Canola oil to whatever butter and oil that remains in the pan from the mushroom sauté. Once the oil is hot, add the chicken and sauté until golden brown on both sides. Move to a paper towel lined platter to drain. In the same skillet, pour off most of the oil and add the onions, celery and bell peppers. Sauté until the onions become translucent and then add the rosemary, garlic, Serrano pepper as well as the tasso and the cooked mushrooms. Stir the mixture and incorporate all. Turn the heat up to high and pour in the bottle of beer. Stir the beer into the mixture with a spatula and scrape the bottom of the pan releasing all of the bits stuck to it. Bring to a slow boil and watch as the beer begins to evaporate. Reduce the heat and bring the pan to a simmer. Add a cup of cream along with a squeeze of lemon and continue sautéing as you slowly reduce the sauce. Once it begins to thicken add the chicken back to the pan and spoon over some of the sauce. Move the pan to the oven for 20 minutes. Remove the pan from the oven and cut the chicken breasts into serving size portions keeping them in place in the pan. If the sauce has become too thick, add some more of the cream. Add the fettuccine noodles, spooning over the sauce and stirring to combine the noodles. Sprinkle with the grated cheese and return to the oven for another 10 minutes. For serving, remove the pan from the oven and garnish with the chopped cilantro and serve in the middle of the table with crusty French bread to sop up the cream sauce. I suggest an ice-cold Jockamo as the beverage of choice. Happy Father’s Day.

You have a crazy friend. I know you do. Everybody has one. That one friend who will always be able to talk you into joining them in some less-than-stellar plan of theirs. Not the kind that try to talk me into late nights at a bar, or

What's funny is that I didn't even know most of these people two years ago, but I now count them among my closest of allies. Believe me, it's not because I make friends quickly, or just naturally have hundreds of friends. It's because I run with these people. A lot. Few things can fast-track a friendship like prolonged suffering brought on by shared exercise. We skip over the facade of social appearances and go straight to seeing each other at our most vulnerable and raw states.

Fathers and Father-Figures
Making Unique Contributions to the Lives of Children In recent years, researchers have given well-deserved attention to the positive impact of fathers and father-figures on the development of children, wellbeing of mothers, and the resulting positive effects on men. This new interest in the beneficial aspects of father-child relationships has emerged as a result of the changing role of the father. Fathers are expected to be involved with their babies from an earlier age than in previous decades. With the changing role has come a change in the definition of the term father which not only includes biological fathers but also men who take an active role in the life of children. To the child, it is emotional paternity that matters. Mothers and fathers interact differently with their children. Fathers do not mother; they father. The manner in which mothers and fathers interact with their children is not better or worse. The interaction styles are simply different. During interactions with children, men resemble other men more than they resemble women whether or not they are biological fathers. Right from the start, men and women interact differently with children. The response of children to these different interaction styles is apparent as young as eight weeks of age. Mothers tend to pick up their babies the same way each time, in a very slow and predictable manner, whereas fathers tend to be less predictable and more stimulating. When approached by mothers, babies 30 FACE | JUNE 2013
The quality of father-child interactions has a positive effect on cognitive, emotional, and social development.
By Joslyn M. McCoy, Ph.D., BCBA-D respond by assuming a more relaxed state by settling in, partially closing their eyes, and having reduced heart rate and respiration. However, when babies are approached by fathers, they tend to be more activated. Babies raise their shoulders, widen their eyes, and have increased heart and respiratory rates. Mothers and fathers also display differences in the way they carry their babies. Mothers usually hold their babies toward the upper part of the chest near the neck as if to protect the baby from the world. Fathers often hold babies facing outward as if to communicate “We will face this world together. These differences in interaction style continue through the toddler years and into adolescence. Children enjoy specific benefits as a result of the unique contributions made by fathers and father-figures. Researchers have identified three primary contributions made by fathers and father-figures that exert the strongest positive influence on child development. The three areas include: engagement and interaction, availability and accessibility, and responsibility for day-to-day care.
Children with frequent positive interactions with fathers and father-figures score higher on measures of intelligence, reasoning skills, and verbal abilities.
Within the area of engagement and interaction, play is the most common activity. Fathers nurture their child’s development through play. Men tend to allow babies more freedom to explore which fosters a greater sense of independence. Men also engage in more stimulating physical play which sets the stage for emotional
self-control as well as recognizing the emotional cues of others. Fathers engage in practical play rather than talking about what they are doing. Fathers play with toys in unconventional ways such as putting a block on their head while making silly noises instead of stacking the blocks, and they provide a safe yet challenging field for children to explore and learn about the world while teaching respect for limits and boundaries. Availability and accessibility are demonstrated through physical and emotional presence. Physical presence includes having close proximity to the child during play and other leisure activities. Emotional presence is engaging with the child in a manner that shows the child that he is truly listening and paying attention to what appears to be important to the child at that moment. This “presence” may include intently listening to the child read a story or carefully watching the child perform a play. A father’s influence on emotional development comes through teaching and interaction. During adolescence, teenagers depend more on fathers for giving advice, sharing conversation, and just “being there.”
Responsibility for day-to-day care involves both direct and indirect care. Direct care may include helping with self-care tasks such as bathing and dressing. Indirect care is arranging childcare, talking to school teachers, or scheduling doctor appointments. These productive activities encourage a shared sense of responsibility and provide opportunities for more interaction and teaching. The quality of father-child interactions has a positive effect on cognitive, emotional, and social development. Children with frequent positive interactions with fathers and father-figures score higher on measures of intelligence, reasoning skills, and verbal abilities. They usually enjoy school and have greater academic success. Mood and behavior concerns occur less often in children who have positive male involvement. Children are better able to cope with stress, frustration, and manage impulses. Those with involved fathers take initiative and have greater selfContinue reading

control. The positive influence of father-child relationships continue through adulthood. Young adults with nurturing fathers are more successful in their careers, have greater self-acceptance, and better overall mental health. The quality of the father-child social relationship carries over to the child’s social interactions with peers and siblings. The strongest predictor of empathy in children is level and quality of paternal involvement. Father involvement, more so than mother involvement, influences children’s success with peer relationships and emotion regulation. During adulthood, greater tolerance, understanding, close friendships, and successful marriages are seen in those who had positive father and father-figure presence in childhood. Mothers experience benefit as a result of father and father-figure involvement. Fathers offer support and serve as a buffer during challenging times. Mothers feel more competent and are happier when fathers and father-figures are involved in child rearing. A higher marital satisfaction and stability is reported by both men and women when the father is involved in the care of the children. Fathers and father-figures receive many benefits as a result of their involvement with children as well. Involved fathers have better self-confidence, feel more effective, have greater job stability and success, have higher satisfaction with their lives, and live longer.
"It is not flesh and blood but the heart that makes us fathers and sons." This quote by Johann Schiller beautifully captures the strong bond that occurs between not only biological fathers and their children but also between father-figures, and children. Daddy, Papa, Parrain, Uncle, and all other father-figures make unique and important contributions to the development of children. The entire family unit experiences greater satisfaction and successful long-term outcomes when positive male influence exists. It has been said that kids spell love T-I-M-E. This month and always, we express our gratitude to all fathers and father-figures for the time you give and the amazing contributions you make in the lives of children. Originally from Baton Rouge, Jan attended LSU and jokingly says, “I changed my major so many times, I received a degree in General Studies.” Knowing that wasn’t going to get her where she thought she wanted to be in life, she decided to go to law school. “It was the 80’s and I was one of only a few women in law school at the time. I remember it being both tough and fascinating”, Jan says. She worked her way through law school as a Senate Aid and after graduation began lobbying. Her law career began to flourish and before turning thirty, she had been appointed the 1st Under Secretary of State and later Deputy Secretary of State.
her greatest joy was working in public service, getting people who think they have nothing in common to work together and then having them realize they actually have a lot in common. It was from this that lead her to run for public office in 2007. She ran for the City Parish Council seat for District 4 (A diverse district, encompassing much of north Lafayette). While running for office, Jan remembers, “I saw an unintentional disconnect in our community… it was socially, economically and civically – there is somewhat of a divide in different areas of our community. I knew then that was going to take all of us to make our community one.” Although she lost the election in

that had discretely hidden under my winter skirts. I saw a new roll of tummy that wasn’t there last year. Are you with me? I don’t have to belabor this. I know you all know what I’m talking about. So, why is it that something that could be so pleasurable (i.e., shopping for vacation) turns out to be so painful?
The culprit is our Inner Critic. At the heart of our body insecurities is a negative internal voice that tells us how we should look. The problem is that it’s not a caring part of our selves. In fact, it’s destructive. The Inner Critic backs every should it delivers with emotional pain. Put on a few pounds? Let’s talk about the swimsuit issue. No, not that one! I mean the internal psychological turmoil that arises at this time of year. Because here it is again—swimsuit

season! And with this season comes a particularly painful experience—body insecurities. I did it. I went swimsuit shopping. I’ve gained wisdom over the years. I didn’t even bother to look at the bikini racks; nor even the two-piece options. I veered straight toward the one-piece suits. I chose three or four possibilities, then plunged bravely into the dressing room. Eek! What a process! I saw cellulite
The secret to getting free from your Inner Critic's effects is to buy out of believing it.

Although each criticism contains different words, each carries the underlying message, “You are defective.” The Inner Critic then brings up proof of your flaws: perhaps a large nose, imperfect skin, or being over- or underweight. I think you’re gathering that your Inner Critic is in no sense a benevolent figure. In fact, it is the source of most of the psychological pain you experience. Take heart, though. You do not have to be in the grip of this negative part of yourself. You can disarm it. You might be tempted to think that a good way to disarm it is to argue with it or perhaps try to shut it up. Years of experience show

that neither of these methods works very well. The secret to getting free from your Inner Critic's effects is to buy out of believing it. My husband, James Elliott, spent the 40 years of his career as a psychologist in developing dozens of skills for doing just that. He gathered those skills in our book, Disarming Your Inner Critic. When you buy out of your Inner Critic's messages you gain profound psychological benefits: you will begin to accept your humanness. You will reduce your inner conflict and turmoil. What’s more you will be able to access and deploy the resources, talents, and vitality of your natural self. Now, let’s go back to the dressing room. Sure, your Inner Critic is there trying to tear you down. But, you no longer have to believe it. You can say, “My worth is a given. Nothing can take that away. Not even a swimsuit!” I did weather that shopping trip. I experienced inner freedom. I stopped believing my Inner Critic's negative messages about my imperfections. And I did find the most wonderful swimsuit. Here’s wishing you inner freedom, along with a most wonderful swimsuit and a blissful summer!

types of things, and we typically want to instill proper behavioral rules in our children’s repertoire of tricks. But, did you know that the word etiquette originated from a man? Louis XIV's gardener! Etiquette originally meant “Keep off the grass.” When Louis XIV’s gardener at Versailles discovered that the aristocrats were trampling through the palace gardens that he had painstakingly maintained, he put up signs, or ‘etiquets’, to warn them off. Lo and behold, dukes and duchesses walked right past the signs anyway. Finally, the King himself decreed that no one was to go beyond the bounds of the etiquets. While breaches of today’s etiquette rules mean that you may be shunned by your friends and colleagues, in the day of Louis XIV, you may have been beheaded for disregarding the rules of the palace. Ouch!!
According to Post, there are three top issues for today’s everyday man where etiquette is concerned:
1
Bad Habits. Some of the things men do are just plain
gross! In Post’s 2011 Etiquette Institute survey, seven of men’s key behaviors were considered to be “bad.” Top
of the bad habit list is “adjusting.” You know what we’re talking about! Nose picking, spitting, smoking/chewing tobacco, sloppy dressing, and wearing a hat where they shouldn’t, round out the list.
2
Making a Mess and Not Helping to Clean Up. Really, what more can we say? Wet towels on the bed, dirty clothes on the floor, dirty dishes in the sink, etc., all drive women nuts.
3
The meaning of the word ‘etiquet’ was later expanded to

Would You Wear Glass? There’s been a growing amount of hype surrounding the futuristic gadget known as Google Glass. In early 2012, we began to hear rumors that Google was working on a wearable device that allows you to search the web, take pictures, video and navigate on-the-go and virtually handsfree. This technology was to come to us in the form of spectacle frames that provides a holographic display that not only refrains from obstructing normal vision, but also aids us in everyday tasks. As the months went by, it was clear that this was not only true, but Google was closer to achieving this goal than anyone would anticipate. Scheduled to release in

early 2014, Glass is certainly going to change the way some of us go about our daily routines, much like smart phones did earlier this millennium. Glass could realistically revolutionize the way we perform our lives. Activated by simple voice commands, one can get directions to a specific retailer or record our children during special moments in time, and even allow you to host video conferences in which your clients can view what you are viewing -if you choose. “It will surely revolutionize the way you use technology for personal benefit,” says Technorati.com’s Jason Davis. There are many more functions of Glass but all of these are

examples of things that embrace convenience and functionality which is the core of Google’s investment. In fact, Google is so confident in Glass’ functionality that the company is giving away the first eight thousand frames to individuals who come up with the most unique ways to use Glass. While the news of Glass actually coming to fruition and integrating with the public is very exciting, it’s easy to mask some of the major concerns surrounding the product. Coming in at a pricy $1500, those who own the spectacles will want the freedom to use them anywhere they chose and here is where we run into controversy. Detractors of the device warn that Glass will make privacy impossible and they have a strong argument. The capabilities of Glass may infringe upon the rights of those who don’t want to be involuntarily videoed, photographed, or recorded. Some say that the device may also promote a sense of alienation between those who can afford the product and those who can’t. “Google Glass isn’t even for sale yet, but it’s already facing
backlash,” says Steven Henn of NPR.org. Some establishments like nightclubs, art galleries, and movie theaters have already begun banning Glass. There are even some claims that a device like Glass could give detailed, traceable data to parties in which the user is not willing to share, but is any of this any different from the arguments that were made about the smart phones we carry now? Chris Taylor, a senior reporter for the tech news site Mashable.com writes, “Current smart phones are just as capable as Google Glass at recording images and sound surreptitiously,” and compared fears of the new gadget to those he got when he first took an iPod on a plane in 2003. It’s an argument in which both sides have valid points, however, the real question should be, “Would you wear Glass?” Whether you like it or not, Google Glass will be coming to a retailer near you and I suspect it’s going to be trendy to have, like iPhones, iPods, and iPads. Glass is going to revolutionize the way we live our personal lives and the way we conduct business.

Must-Have to Add to Your Backyard This Summer (BPT) - Is your backyard ready for bliss this summer? You probably look forward to spending as much time outdoors as possible during warmer months. But do you really have everything you need to ensure you can enjoy your outdoor living space from dawn to dusk - and beyond? Here are three must-have backyard features that can keep your outdoor time comfortable, enjoyable and luxurious, no matter the time of day or night:
Lighting You don't go to bed when the sun goes down, and your outdoor fun doesn't have to end when night arrives. Strategically placed lighting can help keep your outdoor living space safe and inviting well into the evening. When choosing lights for your backyard, deck or patio, choose options specifically designed for outdoor use. Indoor lights can't hold up to the weather outdoors, and could pose a safety risk.
52 FACE | JUNE 2013
"...outdoor fun doesn't have to end when night arrives."
The American Lighting Association recommends using lowvoltage mini lights, concealed in trees, under steps, railings or benches to light decks, porches and patios. You can also install spotlights in nearby trees and point the illumination toward your outdoor living space. Solar lights are also a great option for outdoors, since they cost nothing to operate and create a softer light than traditional electric bulbs.
Mosquito CONTROL In many areas of the country, the arrival of warm weather also means it's mosquito season. The biting insects are more than just a nuisance; they're also a health risk since they can spread West Nile virus, an infection that can cause serious, life-altering disease, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Forty-eight states reported more than 5,000 cases of West Nile in 2012, the CDC reports. Since you live in an area with a significant mosquito problem, it may be a good idea to invest in mosquito control. Options range from barrier spray mists that are odorless and safe for children and pets; to traps that convert propane into carbon dioxide, heat and moisture to mimic a human presence, luring, capturing and controlling mosquitoes. The first-ever wireless enabled trap allows you to receive a text message or email alerting you when the trap needs maintenance. The trap, which services an acre of ground, should be placed between living spaces and mosquito breeding spots like standing water or bushes, and at least 30 to 40 feet away from peopled areas.
Fire Pit Even on hot summer nights there's something enchanting about a fire pit in your outdoor environment. Whether you opt to have something built in to your patio or deck, or purchase something portable from your local garden or home improvement store, a fire pit or chiminea can add both ambiance and warmth to your outdoor environment. You can find a size and style to fit your outdoor design and needs, whether you choose a ceramic chiminea for roasting marshmallows or a large, hand-hammered copper fire pit tub to create warmth and ambiance. When choosing a fire element for your backyard, keep in mind the importance of scale. Your fire pit should be big enough to provide heat, light and ambiance, but not so large it overwhelms the space. Keep flames away from combustible surfaces, like furniture or stored wood, and never leave your fire unattended, especially when there are small children or animals around. Finally, make sure you always have a fire extinguisher on hand when using a fire pit, and follow the manufacturer's directions for use. Your outdoor fun can go all day long - and well into the night - when you prep your backyard with the right tools and features to maximize comfort and enjoyment.

Brunettes of Summer By Betsy Guidry Do blondes really have more fun? This summer, there is an increasing number of women who are stepping outside the norm of “going blonde.” Instead, many women are keeping their natural, dark locks and others are even choosing to become bold brunettes for the summer by trading in their natural, lighter strands for a darker hue. Being brunette does not have to be boring any longer! For years, as winter changed into spring and spring into summer, women consistently lightened their hair to give the appearance of hair color bleached by the sun, mirroring days spent at the beach. As summer passed into fall, and fall into winter, women then started trading in the blonde and honey highlights for caramel and chocolate lowlights, corresponding to the absence of the sun’s warm rays. Summer 2013 has a new trend. Think natural shades of brown kicked up a notch or even two! If you are blonde and looking for a subtle look, a great option is to go one to two shades darker than your current hair color. If you are a natural brunette and would still like to see a small change, you can go one to two shades lighter or darker than your current color to enhance it. Looking for a big, bold change? You have many options with the endless amount of warm and cool tones of brunette shades. Great choices for cooler skin tones are sable and walnut browns; as well as light, medium, and dark ash browns. Dark chocolate, chestnut brown, and red and copper browns work really well for women with warmer skin tones. All shades of brunette colors can be very high-shine in appearance and create a nice, healthy overall look. They can also be much easier to maintain, thus reducing your visits to the salon compared to the number of visits it would take to create and maintain a blonde head of hair.

Wondering how you might feel as a brunette versus a blonde? Take it from two women who have made the blonde-to-brunette switch: Dodie Touchet, who works in Cosmetics at LaMarquise describes herself, while as a blonde, as a “sun-worshipper and sociable, with an edgy wardrobe” where as a brunette, she describes herself as feeling “sassy and sophisticated.” Also, as a brunette, Dodie feels that people take her seriously and seem to approach her in a different way than as a blonde. For makeup, Dodie prefers deeper colors that complement her eyes as a blonde, and as a brunette, “Makeup became fun! I was able to be a little more dramatic.” Dodie shares, “I love bold eyes which look great as a blonde or a brunette, but I can go even bolder as a brunette.” Assistant Operations Manager at LaMarquise, Kelsey Lauchner, found when it came to wardrobe and style, “I leaned more toward reds and blacks when I was a blonde. As a brunette, I actually found that I wasn’t as creative with my clothes and I would stick to what felt safe.” Kelsey also shared that she felt fun, adventurous, and creative as a blonde, versus feeling natural, serious, and mysterious as a brunette. 54 FACE | JUNE 2013

Being a brunette didn’t necessarily change Kelsey’s social life, “But people would take me more seriously with brown hair and they were less questioning if it was natural or not.” Not sure if you can or want to commit to the “Summer Brunette” look? Go “Bronde!” Bronde is a trend, that surfaced several years ago that is a happy median between brunette and blonde. You can have darker locks, while still holding onto accents of the sun-kissed glow you love--looking like you’ve spent your summer in the sand and sun. “Bronde” can be flattering for all ages and hair lengths and provides many different options for color placement, allowing your look to be fun and unique. It is also a really great alternative for those of you who want to experience a trendy change for your hair color this summer without it being too drastic or unnatural. So whether you choose to go brunette, blonde, or bronde, be prepared to possibly change up your makeup and wardrobe when making the switch. When moving from one hair color shade to another, align your makeup palette and clothing color choices to complement and enhance your new color so that you look and feel your best. And who knows, you may also find a new personality emerge as you debut your new color—essentially revealing a brand new you and a summer of fun!
