What’s it mean to live in Acadiana? To me, it’s about living in a paradise filled with culture, comfort, culinary arts at its finest, local festivals, and where blood is thicker than water. Furthermore, it’s a place where folks can sit around the dinner table hearing firsthand stories from their grandparents that remind us of the “good ol’ days”; and how the traditions from previous generations have become the hallmark that tourists from across the world seek to experience. With the rapid growth of our beloved five-parish paradise, it’s easy to get caught up in the commercialization of Acadiana and all its economic successes. It’s important, however, to never lose sight of what makes this place so unique. FACE Magazine needs your help in continuing these traditions. We’re looking for a few experienced writers who are interested in canvassing Acadiana, telling stories of past generations, and showcasing all of the unknown treasures we have to offer. Whether you’ve got one cherished relic of family history to share or ten stories of prosperity, celebration, and people lending a helping hand, we want to hear from you! Contact Admin@faceacadiana.com to learn more about how you can become published in FACE Magazine.

ReProm 2015 A Huge Success For LEF THE WEST WAS WON at Lafayette Education Foundation’s Rhinestone ReProm on Saturday, April 18 at the Hilton Ballroom. The 2015 ReProm marked the eighth annual Lafayette Education Foundation signature fundraising event, which raises funds in support of excellence in education in Lafayette Parish schools. This year’s event definitely lived up to its name by giving guests the opportunity to relive or recreate their high school prom while raising funds to help students achieve academic goals. Rhinestone ReProm had its fair share of cowboy hats, bedazzled jean jackets and even one pair of chaps! Of course, there was also the more classic tuxedo and modern gown. No matter the attire, the bursts of laughter and two-stepping to the great music that filled the Hilton Ballroom made it easy to conclude that everyone at the event had barrels of fun! The LEF ReProm Court was comprised of a group of community-minded citizens diverse in age, occupation and interests. Prior to the event and at last-minute event voting, the community participated by donating dollars for the LEF 2015 ReProm King and Queen.

REDUCING CELLULITE through diet

Chicken Broth This broth is the same broth your mother or grandmother used to make and can be easily made or purchased at our local farmers markets and some grocers.

2-3 lbs chicken parts (such as necks, backs, breastbones, & wings)

2-4 chicken feet (optional)

Bring to a boil, and remove scum that rises to the top. Reduce heat, cover and simmer for 6 to 8 hours. The longer you cook the broth, the richer and more flavorful it will be. About 10 minutes before finishing the broth, add parsley. This will impart additional minerals to the broth.

4 qts cold filtered water 2 Tbsp vinegar 1 large onion, chunked (optional) 2 carrots, peeled & chopped (optional) 3 celery stalks, chopped (optional) 1 bunch parsley (optional)

Cut chicken parts into several pieces and place in a large stainless steel pot with water, vinegar and all vegetables except parsley. Let stand 30 minutes to 1 hour.

Remove chicken pieces with a slotted spoon. Strain the broth into a large bowl and reserve in your refrigerator until the fat rises to the top and congeals. Skim off this fat and reserve the broth in covered containers in your refrigerator or freezer. Chicken broth can be stored in the refrigerator for 4-6 months.

* Farm-raised, free-range chickens give best results. Many conventional chickens will not produce stock that gels.

THERE IS NOTHING LIKE

What Drinks to Avoid in Summer AND WHY

an ice cold drink

on a hot summer day. But serving a cold drink does not automatically make it perfect for the heat. Many drinks that you consider common summer drinks actually come with a big downside, and it is easy to keep gulping them down because their coolness gives instant relief. The next time you pick up a drink to quench your thirst, you may want to think if the temporary satisfaction is worth it, or if you have other options that can cool you down and still support your health. Here are some of the drinks you should avoid in the summer season:

REGULAR/DIET SODA The biggest and most popular summer drink is soda. However, sodas contain too much sugar and artificial sweeteners. Aspartame is a common sugar substitute used in diet sodas, and it has over 90 associated side effects, including birth defects, seizures, and diabetes. Other dangerous chemicals included in most sodas include: Benzene — The federal limit of benzene in drinking water is 5 parts per billion (ppb), but many sodas have been found to have almost 80 ppb in them. Benzene is associated with various conditions, including cancer. Phosphoric Acid — This chemical interferes with your body’s calcium absorbing abilities and can eventually lead to the softening of bones and teeth and even osteoporosis. Sodium Benzoate — This is a common preservative in sodas and soft drinks, but it is known to cause DNA damage and is associated with diseases like liver cirrhosis and Parkinson’s disease.

WINE COOLERS Alcoholic beverage consumption is generally less during the summer, but wine coolers taste more like fruit juice and are therefore a popular choice for an alcoholic drink on a warm summer day. However, wine coolers are sweetened by adding lots of sugar and fruit juice. Also, some cheap wine coolers are made of malt instead of wine. They have artificial flavors, food colors, and sweeteners, including aspartame, which are not good for your health.

CERTAIN FRUIT JUICES, INCLUDING LEMONADE Lemonade is often considered the quintessential summer drink, but unless you are having it fresh, it is best to stay away from lemonade and other packaged fruit juices. They are generally just a concoction of corn syrup, water, and artificial flavorings. Even juices advertised as “natural” contain artificial fruit flavoring, and the natural portion is just a minor part of the whole mix. Excessive amounts of fructose, which corn syrup

has aplenty, can increase your risk of degenerative diseases and weight gain. Packaged lemonade in particular is as good as soda. Freshly made lemonade and limeade and juices are best for summer. Lemonade in particular is good because lemon is lowest in fructose.

BEER Beer contains a high amount of empty calories. However, there are other problems associated with this popular summer drink. The yeast content and other elements in beer make it a powerful uric acid trigger. Uric acid is generally a waste product in the blood, and high levels of this chemical are associated with conditions like gout. Moreover, people diagnosed with kidney disease, hypertension, and obesity often have high uric acid levels, too.

SWEET TEA Tea, when made properly, is a great source of antioxidants. However, sweet tea is pretty much just a source of artificial sweeteners despite its popularity. The actual sugar content may vary, for most sweet tea recipes have 22 percent sugar, which is twice the amount you can find in soda.

ENERGY DRINKS Energy drinks are not just cool summer drinks, but also allround popular items. The high caffeine content in energy drinks gives you a big boost of energy, but, apart from this benefit, these drinks are mostly bad for your health. They have severe health consequences, especially in teens and small children who can suffer from caffeine toxicity, arrhythmia, anxiety, and even stroke. If you really want an energy boost, try skipping the drinks and change some of your lifestyle and diet choices. Sleep more, exercise regularly, and relax. These three improvements can help most people increase their overall energy levels.

HOME Fortunately, there are a number of ways to create a stunning home bar on even the most limited budget. If you use these strategies, you can build a home bar you can be proud of and still have cash left over to stock it with top shelf whiskey and primo spirits.

Check Out the Liquidation Sales It is a sad fact of life that many new bars and restaurants fail after only a short time in business. The bar and restaurant business is a tough one, and many well-meaning owners find themselves unable to meet their obligations and keep customers coming through their doors. You can use that unhappy statistic to your advantage by keeping a close watch on liquidation sales and bankruptcy auctions. When the bar down the street goes out

How to Create a Professional-Looking Home Bar On Any Budget The home bar is becoming an increasingly popular amenity, and many new homes come with beautiful bars built in. If you have been dreaming of adding a bar to your own home, you may have wondered how you can fit it into your budget.

of business, you may be able to find some professional grade bar stools, tables and cleaning supplies for your home bar. These professional quality items are likely to last a lifetime in your home bar, and those liquidation prices will fit right into your budget.

Your One Stop Shop For Any Gift On Your List

You don’t have to be a woodworking expert to create a great home bar.

Create Your Own Bar Décor You do not have to spend a fortune to decorate your home bar. In fact, you may not have to spend a cent to make your bar look like a million bucks. If you want some unique table and bar accents, just fill your empty wine bottles with fresh flowers or top them with taper candles. You can find other bar accents – like neon beer signs – at estate sales, liquidation auctions and even rummage sales. Just keep an eye out and get ready to buy when you spot a bargain.

Do the Work Yourself Hiring a contractor to build your home bar is enough to bust even the most generous budget. You can save hundreds, or even thousands, of dollars by doing the work yourself. You don’t have to be a woodworking expert to create a great home bar. There are simple plans available online, and the materials you need to make those plans are reality are as close as your local lumber yard. It may take longer to build it yourself, but the savings will be well worth the extra time. Being a smart shopper and doing the grunt work yourself is the best way to create a great home bar and still have money left over. Once the bar stools are in place and the glasses all stacked, you can take the money you saved and spend it on liquor for you and a few dozen of your closest friends.

some well-appointed landscaping. Every spring, gardeners flock to garden centers. Often included in the mix are homeowners who’ve moved into a new home that has little landscaping on the property. Many of these avid shoppers return home with a vehicle full of plants, trees, and bushes to put in place. Landscaping seems easy at the outset. You buy plants, dig holes and bury the roots. But small plants grow into large plants, and it’s often once plants are established that problems are noticed. On just about any street, gardening blunders include too tall trees, overcrowded bushes, and overgrown shrubs that block the windows of a home. There’s little curb appeal achieved from landscaping that hides a house from view.

WHY YOU NEED A STANDBY GENERATOR And How to Choose The Right One For Your Home EVERY PART OF THE COUNTRY IS PRONE TO ITS SHARE OF NATURAL DISASTERS, from earthquakes and mudslides in California to hurricanes and flooding right here in Acadiana. It is important for every homeowner to be prepared for the fury of Mother Nature, no matter what shape that wrath may take. Buying a standby generator is one of the best investments you can make and, in the end, that purchase could save you a lot of money. Having a standby generator available when the lights go out can also increase your safety and the safety of your family — certainly an important consideration during hurricane season.

Being a Woman is a Full-Time Career May celebrates Mothers, Nurses, Teachers and Administrative Assistants, to name a few. Even if you don’t see yourself in any of these roles, let me help you set the record straight! As a woman, you DO have a maternal instinct; you have consoled someone through pain; you have mentored someone; and it’s safe to say that you have assisted someone with something. So this month is a celebration of YOU! As women, we wear many hats which can include: Daughter, Wife, Mother, Aunt, Chief Cook and Bottle Washer, Concierge, Taxi Driver, Personal Trainer, Photographer, Therapist, Disaster Relief Worker, Hairstylist, Maid, Referee, Accountant, Coach, and Comedian. With so many hats, we usually get lost focusing on others. When do we get to focus on ourselves? Carving out some quality time might be easier said than done. But we need balance to juggle all of our plates, right?

When you put some of these suggestions into

Easy ways to manage the full-time career of being a woman

practice, you will find great joy in the career of being a woman! Happy May – the month that celebrates ALL women!

• STOP = Stop the negative self-talk.

Write a Six Most Important Things To Do list every night before going to bed. That way, you can wake up ready for action and results. Create and say a daily affirmation. Mine goes something like this: “I am thankful for waking up this morning and for the beautiful day that I will have. I am grateful for a loving husband and two wonderful four-legged children. I will make this day the best I can with humor and grace so that when I lay down tonight, I will have done my very best for the day.“ Repeat throughout the day, if necessary. When you get down on yourself for not being perfect, STOP, MOP AND ROLL!

• MOP = Move On to Positive thinking.

Laurie co-founded the Professional Résumé Writing and Research Association (PRWRA) in 2000 to provide a venue where global career professionals could access educational, networking and personal / professional development opportunities in the careers industry. In 2005, PRWRA adopted a new name – Career Directors International (CDI). She’s a Dale Carnegie Performance Development Specialist, a published professional résumé writer, frequent presenter at regional job fairs, and mentor to clients around the world.

• ROLL = Roll forward with laughter, because whatever is stressing you out just doesn’t matter in the bigger picture of life. Learn to laugh at yourself, because laughter is the best medicine. Remember, none of us are perfect. Breathe. Try again. Carve out a few minutes every day to be alone! This can be in the tub/shower, in your car during a lunch break, or some other place where you can focus on yourself.

THE DICHOTOMY of Maggie Simar By Nicole LaCour

Every day Maggie helps individuals and families find some peace and fairness in times of discord and dysfunction.

Photography by Penny Moore of Moore Photography FACE MAGAZINE. ALL RIGHTS RESERVED.

Shirley Temple-like demeanor Maggie runs through her fully scheduled days of motherhood, community activism and a full time job as a 16th district hearing officer for St. Mary Parish.

SHE IS A STUDY IN DICHOTOMY as she takes her sunny disposition into a job that often sees people at their worst, at the most difficult times of their lives. “I deal with the two most emotional things possible: money and children.” Every day Maggie helps individuals and families find some peace and fairness in times of discord and dysfunction. “I don’t like confrontations,” Maggie admits but, “I can raise my voice,” she said maintaining her cheery smile. “I am the first and hopefully the last stop in calming things down between people who are not getting along.” With almost 12 years of experience, hearing some 650-700 cases a year, Maggie has seen it all; people who would do anything to get their way, aggressive lawyers, people with no representation, naïve to the system, and people being mean to each other. “It’s hasn’t been a great lesson for me,” Maggie said. “But I’m very optimistic.”

“She is the definition of tact,” her peer, Elizabeth Long said of Maggie. “She cuts through the nonsense and is firm and fair without ever looking down on anyone.”

“It’s not magic,” Maggie said of her success. “I tell people, ‘If you have a problem, let’s talk about it.’ If everyone knows what the rules are

and follows them, things are successful. When there are no rules, that’s not good and crazy things happen.”

“We’re gatekeepers against the ridiculous,” she said of her work. “If you’re fair and use common sense, everything is amicable. The hardest cases are the ones with two great parents who are not fighting and they want to get along and it’s sad to see.”

Despite the nature of her work, the ultimate optimist doesn’t want to do anything else. “I love it. I love my job. I’ll never leave it,” When you find out what makes her tick, her passion for using the law to help people makes sense. Maggie’s character can be summed up with these words: commitment, organization and compassion.

Maggie Simar

Maggie Simar wears her attitude on her face. With an almost

“Law school was a reality check,” she said, “and I was very tender and sensitive.” But she stuck it out. “I’m stubborn that way. I wasn’t going to let it beat me.” When she discovered family law, she found her calling. “I didn’t go into law school to make a lot of money. Law was a way for me to help people.”

and supportive parents. She always did well in school and college was an assumption as much as a goal. But after graduating with a degree in broadcast journalism, Maggie found herself in a very different environment — law school. The cut-throat atmosphere didn’t fit with her world view and she had a hard time at first. “Law school was a reality check,” she said, “I was very tender and sensitive.” But she stuck it out. “I’m stubborn that way. I wasn’t going to let it beat me.” When she discovered family law, she found her calling. “I didn’t go into law school to make a lot of money. Law was a way for me to help people.”

At LSU, Maggie discovered one of her greatest loves, next to her family: LSU football. “My dad told me a long time ago that if I learned about football, I’d never be dateless on a Saturday night.” She credits her obsession with getting a job in Lake Charles as a law clerk for the Third Circuit Court of Appeals. Judge Henry Yelverton asked her about her hobbies. “I don’t have a lot of hobbies other than LSU football,” she told him. “I haven’t missed a home game in 10 years.” His response: “You’re hired.” Maggie and her family still attend most home games and a few away games each year.

MAGGIE WENT ON TO PRACTICE FAMILY LAW but the demands of raising a family conflicted with the 24/7 availability expected by her clients. Judge Ed Leonard, her “favorite judge in the world,” suggested she apply for the somewhat new position of hearing officer in St. Mary Parish. She’s been there since 2003.

Commitment meets compassion every day in her work and it’s mirrored in her community life where Maggie adds extreme organization to a long career of activism. “There’s a binder for everything,” fellow Junior League member, Tracy Ralston remarked. On May 12, Maggie will become the president of Junior League of Lafayette, the highlight of a 14 year-long membership. Maggie relishes in the mutual commitment of her fellow members. The women of the League are devoted not only to serving the community but to encouraging and nurturing the potential in each other. When Maggie led her provisional group, women who were new to the League, she bonded closely with them and continues to serve as a mentor and leader to many. “Not everyone knows what they can do,” she said. “The best thing you can do for a fellow member is say, ‘Hey, why don’t you think about being this or that. I see your gifts and I think you’d be good at it.’ Sometimes a member might not see themselves in a certain role until they’re encouraged.”

AFTER FIVE YEARS SERVING the community branch of the League, Maggie became more interested in the internal functioning and served as Finance Vice President. “It was in that role that I could see the big picture, what the organization can do.” As incoming president, Maggie credits Tracey as her mentor. “She’s amazing,” Maggie said of Tracy. “She’s the most methodical and strategic person I know.” Tracy, a more reserved, careful speaker said of Maggie, “She has great passion and she’s not afraid to show it. She’s everyone’s cheerleader.” Maggie is learning from Tracy to slow down and consider questions before answering them with passion and spontaneity, as Maggie is inclined to do.

THE LEAGUE In 1957 a group of women started the Service League in Lafayette. In 1974 the group was admitted into the Association of Junior Leagues. The Junior League of Lafayette is “an organization of women committed to promoting volunteerism, developing the potential of women and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers.” The League has been instrumental in the formation of such organizations as: The Family Tree, The University Art Museum, the Acadiana Arts Council, the Natural History Museum and many more.

The League’s current projects include: Junior Quiz Bowl: Weekly competitions held from September to March at Lafayette High School with questions in the areas of history, geography, math, science and popular culture. Girls on the Run: A program for girls in 3rd-8th grades that focuses on health, body image, bullying, confidence, leadership and internet safety through the process of training for a 5k run. Kids in the Kitchen: From September to April, kids from the Boys and Girls Club are taught about healthy eating and living. For a complete list of the League’s projects, visit: juniorleagueoflafayette.com Between 2012-2013 the League contributed about $230,000 in community funds, $89,000 in local, non-profit grants, provided 23,500 volunteer hours and served 5,778 women and children in Lafayette. The Junior League is an essential ingredient in health of Lafayette’s culture and the vitality of our community.

THE JUNIOR LEAGUE IS a multi-faceted organization that focuses on providing volunteers, funding worthy projects and causes and facilitating cooperation between organizations for successful achievements. Maggie is passionate about the League’s current focus on the health of women and children. She believes the League could take its dedication a step further by becoming more of an advocate for public policy. Maggie imagines the League learning more about lobbying state legislature in order to take certain initiatives, such as healthy self-esteem in girls, discouraging distracted driving in teens, and educational initiatives beyond local campaigns and into laws or policies. “Wouldn’t it be great if we could not only impact 300 girls, but all women in Louisiana? I think that’s really cool.”

Between the 100 or more hours a week Maggie devotes to Junior League tasks, her full time job and the grueling schedule of two active children; Kade, 13 and Rebecca, 11, Maggie truly is the picture of the ambitious, active working mother. But she does have her “me”time and creative outlets.

Maggie gets up at 5:30 a.m. every morning to exercise, another testament to her commitment. Her home is custom built to her and her husband Todd’s specifications. It’s her third build and she’s planning a fourth. Maggie likes to build houses. “We’ve been here seven years and there’s too much traffic,” she said. So the family is moving to a quieter location. “With every house you learn what works and what doesn’t. We never use the living room or the dining room,” she said. “So in the next one those rooms will be more functional. I like the process. I like picking things out. The next house will have some changes for my daughter and me. We’re really building a better house so I can get a bigger bedroom, a gas range, and Becca can get a walk-in closet. Every teenager needs a walk-in closet.”

HER SECOND CREATIVE OUTLET is her membership in the Krewe of Xanadu “They are a very creative group of women. I just help them. I can write some by-laws but I can’t do what they do.” For Maggie, the krewe proved to be more than a fun outlet. “Those ladies — they are the reason I’m so successful in the League. They showed me that I could be close with a small group of women. They taught me about bonding closely and wanting the best for each other. I love those ladies.”

Maggie said she is often asked how she “does it all.” Her answer: “A supportive husband, a flexible job and commitment to the cause.” I think people who know her would add “a genuine compassion for her peers and her community and a desire to make the world a better place — one binder at a time, one case at a time, one initiative at a time.”

Take a nap, call a friend you haven’t spoken with in ages, punch a punching bag if you have some excess frustration to work out, or start a journal. Engage in activities that help you clear your mind and focus your thoughts. So many women feel that this is unacceptable when you’re a mom. They feel that everyone else should come first, but if you aren’t there for yourself, how can you be there for your family?

For those lucky few who manage to get a few days for a retreat, go prepared to relax your mind, body, and soul. Take books, music, or simply some mental exercises for meditations. Have a Spa Day, walk with nature, ride a horse, or just think about who you are as a woman. GIFTS

Give Up Some Of Your Time For Her

As Mother’s Day approaches, it’s time to start thinking of ways to show your mom just how much you love and appreciate her. Whether you live in the same neighborhood or have settled thousands of miles away, one of these meaningful gifts should be perfect.

Give Something Personalized There’s plenty of scope for creativity and imagination with personalized gifts. A mug with mom’s favorite TV character can be ideal, while a mother who loves her pets might love a personalized cat bowl or a gift certificate for a dog grooming service. You can personalize almost anything. From calendars to t-shirts, stationary and phone covers, there are endless objects that can be turned into hilarious or touching gifts with the addition of the right quote or photograph.

In this day and age, online dating has become increasingly popular, and it is not uncommon for first dates to originate online. But meeting someone in person for the first time can be stressful. Not only have you not met the person before, but it is difficult to know who you’re really meeting. While online dating can be risky, there are precautions you can take that will help keep you safe until you better know the person you’re meeting.

Driving yourself to and from the date and politely declining any invitations to enter your date’s car will keep you in control of the situation, and can help keep you safe. 7 THINGS Every Couple Needs To Stop Doing Most couples develop some bad habits over time that can wreak havoc. Here are 7 things

1

Giving Your Partner Your Partial Attention

to stop doing before

Checking email, texting, or watching TV while your partner is in the same room doesn’t constitute quality time together. However, many people have difficulty unplugging and giving their partner their undivided attention long enough to hold a real conversation. Give your partner your full attention so you can truly

they damage their

connect with one another.

every couple needs

relationship.

2

Skimping on the Compliments You can never give too many compliments. However, as a relationship matures, compliments often begin to dwindle. Give your partner plenty of encouragement. Offer praise and genuine words of encouragement to help your partner navigate each day with confidence.

50 FACE | MAY 2015

3 Keeping Score Keeping score and trying to ensure that everything is fair can make couples argue more like siblings. Everything doesn’t have to be fair in your romantic relationship. Trying to keep a tally of who has done the most or who has earned something will only damage your relationship. Focus on giving to your partner rather than worrying about what you’re getting.

4 Not Being a Person of Your Word

Your partner needs to know you are trustworthy. Make promises that you’ll follow through with. Don’t say things that you don’t mean and don’t make promises you don’t intend to keep. Building trust, loyalty, and security in the relationship means that your partner needs to know you are a person of your word.

5 Talking More Than Listening Communication should involve listening more than you speak. However, most people focus more on getting their point across rather than truly trying to understand what their partner has to say. Focus on listening to your partner and developing an understanding of your partner’s point of view before trying to express your opinion. Listening to your partner can reduce a lot of conflict caused by misunderstandings.

6 Listening Passively Only Listening should be an active process. However, many people treat it like a passive activity. Not talking doesn’t constitute listening. In order to actively listen to someone, you should ask questions, nod your head, and seek clarification when you don’t understand. Get rid of other distractions and focus on what your partner has to say by showing you are actively trying to understand what is being said.

7

Making the Relationship Lower on the Priority Scale Relationships often top the priority scale in the beginning but over time, a relationship can slip down the priority list slowly. Kids, jobs, extended family, and friends can all take precedence over the relationship if you’re not careful. The lower the relationship falls on the priority scale, the more likely the relationship will suffer.

BEAUTY | STYLE FACIAL MAKEUP Skip the foundation. Use a lightly tinted bronzing powder to add subtle color. If you still need a bit more color on your cheeks, use a brush to lightly apply a light powder blush in a pale coral or pink shade. Follow up with a dusting of translucent, oil-free powder to reduce shine. Eye makeup is best minimized unless you want to look like a raccoon when you emerge from the surf. Try curling your lashes using an eyelash curler and follow up with two to three coats of a brown, waterproof mascara. This will subtly accent your eyes without looking overdone. If you feel like you need a little more eye emphasis, apply a subtle line of waterproof eyeliner in a subtle shade of brown.

LIP COLOR Use a good lip conditioning stick with sun protection to moisturize and

may feel a bit naked with a freshly scrubbed face. Striking the right balance with beach makeup can be a bit tricky. Here are some tips for getting your face ready for a day by the ocean.

LESS IS MORE Avoid the tendency to apply heavy makeup when you’re heading for the beach. Between sweating in the hot sun and the salty, high humidity environment, you can end up looking like a clown with a heavy makeup application. Go for a light, subtle look. Makeup can look unnatural when you’re showing so much skin and you’re exposed to the bright rays of the sun.

SUN PROTECTION IS CRITICAL Although you’re going lighter on the makeup, don’t forget sunscreen. Even one sunburn can do significant damage to the skin and

IN THE BAG

Hermes Yellow Croc Bag – hermes.com

WHAT IS IT ABOUT WOMEN AND THEIR HANDBAGS? I’m not talking about just any bag or purse. I’m referring to the luxurious designer handbags that are signed, numbered and come with pedigree papers. The designer handbag that requires a bodyguard when you carry it. The purse that gets its own seat at a table (God forbid that it touches the floor). The bag that many are willing to spend as much as a month’s rent or mortgage to own and some others will rent a luxury brand to complete their wardrobe. What started out of necessity as a useful

BEAUTY | STYLE What is a

MEDICAL SPA? IS THERE A BOARD CERTIFIED SKIN EXPERT IN THE OFFICE? Many of our patients have asked us what the difference is between a day spa and a medical spa (or medi-spa). At first glance they may seem similar; however, there is a very important difference: A medical spa operates under the direction of a physician and is most valuable when supervised by a highly trained and specialized medical doctor such as a board certified dermatologist. Medical spas can treat conditions on your face and body such as brown spots, redness, fine lines and wrinkles, sagginess and broken capillaries with procedures far more effective than that of traditional day spa. At one time, medical spas tended to have a more clinical atmosphere than day spas. That is far from

true today! Medical spas today strive to create a relaxing and comfortable environment in the clinical setting. Staff are trained to bring a stress-free, fulfilling experience to the patient. In fact, many medical spas offer expanded services

such as facials and aromatherapy to their patients to enhance the overall experience. Medical spas primarily focus on non-surgical healing procedures with durable benefits to improve your appearance. Chemical Peels, Facials and Physician Grade Skincare products. Active aesthetic dermatologists with extensive medical expertise provide the safest and effective outcomes to:

1.

Inject deep into the face as well as right under the skin. The face has a complex skin and substructure. An advanced understanding of the underlying architecture supporting the structure of the face, facial bones, muscles, nerves, blood vessels and fat pads, which are responsible for a full and youthful look, is necessary to know where and how to inject dermal fillers and BOTOX. Strategic injections produce safe, effective results while minimizing adverse outcomes.

2.

Alter the epidermis (4 to 5 outer layers of the skin which acts as the body’s major barrier against an inhospitable environment, by preventing pathogens from entering, making the skin a natural barrier to infection).

3.

Alter the dermis which contains collagen and elastic fibers, important elements that cushion and provide skin structure, and blood vessels which provide nourishment for waste removal for both dermal and epidermal cells.

Some day spas go beyond their authorized legal boundaries by performing medical procedures, such as injectable BOTOX and facial fillers and combine chemical peeling agents that affect the skin below the epidermis. And some medical spas may inappropriately offer medical treatments that only experienced board certified physician skin experts should perform. In order to insure maximum safety, maximum results and hence maximum value, you as a patient are encouraged to seek a facility with appropriately trained providers who practice within their legal scope of practice. Good outcomes, safety and effective treatments is most likely achieved when there is an experienced Board Certified Physician Skin Expert who has the scientific knowledge, years of experience and expertise to recommend, perform and supervise medical spa procedures.

Daytime Casual Look cute but still be comfortable by pairing a patterned tank over white jeans and sandals.

This would be perfect to wear for lunch with a friend at a cafĂŠ or a day of shopping on your vacation.

Nighttime Dressy Show off your sun-kissed tan with a beautiful strapless maxi, and dress it up with sandal heels. This look is perfect for date night reservations or even an evening get together outside! Wearing a color or pattern pairs well with your bronzed skin and will turn heads wherever you go.

Swim Trends Don’t be intimidated to buy swimwear this summer! One-pieces are huge this season and can actually be flattering for any body type! Whether it’s strappy, a tube-top style, or tank – one-pieces are sure to hit every pool and beach this summer

Cheeky Bottoms They’re making an appearance this season so don’t be afraid to show a little skin. My advice is to pair with a full-coverage swimsuit top to add a contrast of looks. I also always like to wear jean shorts over my bottoms for a slimmer appearance to chill by the pool!

Don’t forget essentials like your sunnies, book, and sunscreen in your beach bag!
