Unleash the bunnies and crack open the chocolate eggs, it’s Easter season! Check out the Family listings for our guide to the best Easter events this year. From a children’s rave to traditional Easter egg hunts, we’ve got you and your little ones covered. We’re also excited to be speaking to drag legend and all-around Brighton sweetheart Dave Lynn. Dave really needs no introduction - with over 40 years experience in drag and entertainment, he’s been described as the godmother of drag in the UK. There’s also plenty of health and well-being goodies for you this month, too. As the weather starts to warm up, we’ve got some lovely words from a sea swimming devotee on why she loves it so very much. If it’s warmer water that you’re after, we’ve also reviewed The Float Spa, a studio in Hove specialising in immersive float therapies. As per usual, we’ve got the best insights into nightlife, live music and eating out. Check out our review of Paris Wine Bar - if delicious tapas and good wine are your thing, then you’re in for a treat. Dave Lynn, Brighton’s Sweetheart.

05

By Samantha Harman

A

nyone who is lucky enough to know Dave Lynn will tell you what a wonderful human being he is. As one of Brighton’s longest standing drag performers he has earned OG status, appearing in countless high profile TV shows and films over the years. In spite of this he remains humble. He regularly performs on the UK drag circuit to packed audiences and any venue manager in the city knows if you book Dave for the night, you’re guaranteed to be at full capacity. What is it you love most about living in Brighton? Everything. I’m from London and I chose to live here because I liked the fact it’s so weird and wonderful. The city accepts everybody no matter who you are and it feels like we are all a family. What are your career highlights so far? I probably couldn’t tell you in one

ISSUE TWO | APRIL 2022

day! Faking It for Channel 4 was a great highlight because I’ve never trained anyone to do drag, having not been trained myself. The film A beautiful Thing was also a massive highlight, I had no idea it would become so successful. But actually becoming a drag artist and making a success of it is the biggest highlight of all. I love performing and making people laugh, I really enjoy connecting with the audience and it’s different every time. Any forthcoming events? I’ve just done a couple of TV appearances, one was in Grace, the Brighton Detective. I’m not sure when that will be aired but I filmed last October. And the other one is for Sky and it’s called Funny Girl. It was very camp! You celebrated a milestone recently? Yes, 46 years in the business, man and boy. The 45th milestone year actually occurred during lockdown, so I did a show on the top

of White Cliffs and I celebrated by getting drunk again. Now the restrictions are lifting and life is slowly returning to normal, can you share your top tips for getting through lockdown? I went through three phases of lockdown because it was so surreal at first. I thought is this going to be fun because I don’t have to do anything? So I ran to the off-license every five minutes. Seriously, recycling disowned us! Then there was phase two where I wanted to get back to reality, so I started doing drag shows in the street. We all started to lose track of life. Myself and some other drag artists started doing shows online to entertain people at home. The main thing I will take from the experience though is phase three, to love being at home and feeling settled, which is new to me having always been a performer traveling to shows and out most evenings.

Paris Wine Bar An Oasis of Calm

013

By Samantha Harman

F

eatures Editor Samantha Harman, enjoyed some alfresco dining in the newly refurbished garden at one of Hove’s hotspots. Paris Wine Bar is a well loved hotspot in central Hove, with outside seating front and back where you can enjoy an amazing array of wines, beers and spirits while catching some rays. It has recently undergone a transformation with the rear garden now boasting a retractable sun roof and state of the art heating. I was invited along to try the Tapas menu and first impressions were good, the garden truly is an oasis of calm away from busy Church Road. Stylish black and white furniture is offset by a living wall, tons of green foliage and a dark tiled floor. My dining

ISSUE TWO | APRIL 2022

partner and I settled into a table at the rear of the garden to catch maximum sunlight. Moments later our waitress appeared with the extremely varied menu and the large glass of Sauvignon Blanc I’d requested on my way through (hey, when in Paris right?). Sidenote: The Sauvignon Blanc is from New Zealand and incredibly easy to drink and at 13% proof I was a little bit tipsy after two glasses. They were large ones though. Back to the food; mini burgers with chips, scallops with crispy bacon and minted peas, chicken skewers and fish stew. Quite an unusual combination, but we wanted to sample a good variety. Firstly the presentation was exquisite, the food arrived promptly on black plates and was a feast for the eyes. The fish stew was giant king prawns, shells on, mussels and

chunks of white fish, piled high floating in the most delicious consomme, it came with its own bread basket, miniature french sticks and garlic butter. The scallops were cooked to perfection, very soft and seasoned well, I was impressed with the portion size too. The chips were certainly not frozen, hand cut and chunky, just how I like them and they went well with the mini burgers that as it transpired weren’t that mini. Overall, amazing service, the staff are really friendly and helpful, the food is fabulous and I’ll definitely be returning very soon. 119 Church Rd, Hove BN3 2AF 01273 778013

Formally known as The Amsterdam, this gorgeous seafront venue is now under new ownership and has undergone a bit of a revamp over the past few weeks. The outside seating area now allows a sense of privacy following the installation of imitation hedges that give a classy, high-end feel to the exterior. One word to describe the interior, camp, but delightfully so. The addition of a sequin backdrop to the stage and some colourful murals on the walls works well, you definitely know you’re in an LGBTQ+ cabaret space. But what’s the new menu like? I ordered a chicken, bacon and blue cheese ciabatta with a side of chicken wings. My dining partner ordered the pizza with a side of ribs. My verdict is that it’s really good pub grub. The toppings weren’t skimpy on the pizza and it was all well presented and delicious. The staff and owners were magnanimous but not overbearing and checked in at the right moments for drink top-ups and ensured we were happy with the food. I’ll 100% be going back for more food or to watch the endless stream of drag artists and shows over the following weeks. DISCOVER LGBTQ+

Lashes By GB lashesbygb.com

Lash extensions have risen in popularity over the past few years and deciding where to go can be a minefield. Georgia Burroughs has been a qualified lash tech for just over three and a half years, she started lashes as a side line when studying at university and has become so successful it’s now her main job. Working from a gorgeous salon located on London Road, she offers a variety of lash and brow services including hybrids, which I prefer as they give a more natural look. I used to wear strip lashes on nights out, but got fed up with the glue and ensuing ugliness when I removed them. Georgia was recommended through a friend, so I decided to take the plunge. The service takes about an hour for a full set and I was made as comfortable as possible. We had a good chat about life and the universe which certainly helped pass the time. My lashes look amazing, it doesn’t even feel as though I’m wearing any. Certainly a lot less cumbersome than strip lashes and I get to wake up feeling gorgeous everyday.

The Float Spa.

iscover spoke to Camille Pierson proprietor of The Float Spa in Hove about the many benefits of floating. “Floating is a bit like going to the gym, you don’t go once and then wake up with a massive six pack. People float for many different reasons so the key objective is finding out what a customer’s reason is. It could be to do with a chronic illness such as Fibromialgia, or for mental health challenges. I floated initially in 2014 to overcome PTSD, anxiety and depression. Obviously one float isn’t going to help anyone overcome the problem, so it takes time and practice. Learning how to relax your mind is a big part of it. We are super stimulated nowadays, people will watch TV while being on their phones, so unravelling that stimulation is difficult for many people, which is why we

ISSUE TWO | APRIL 2022

recommend a course of at least three sessions. We also talk about feelings here too, how someone feels before and after a float. Learning how to cope with silence is a lot for certain people. The main thing is about letting go of tension and not holding it in the body. Learning that being in a floatation tank is a safe space where it’s ok to let go is the main objective. What is a floatation tank? We have very large pods here, they’re about the size of a car if you took out all of the interior. Ours are designed by guys who are 6ft 7, so they’re huge! A pod is filled with 10 inches of water at skin temperature (35.5 degrees). It can’t be too hot otherwise your body will stress itself to cool itself down and equally the opposite if the water is too cold. It is then filled with 500kg of Epsom Salts, as this dissolves there is effectively more dissolved material than

there is water meaning a person will float on the surface. It’s a bit like floating in the dead sea but in central Hove. We do have lights inside and it’s your choice whether to have them left on or turned off, or to have the lid shut. It’s manually operated so you can open or close it whenever you wish, meaning it’s very easy to get out. Optimum floating conditions are lid down, light off, but we don’t enforce that on anyone. This is another reason we recommend the course, because the first time someone might want the light on and then gradually build up. Floating is similar to a meditation practice, it takes time and effort, especially in today’s climate. It’s unravelling human behaviour by going back and learning to switch off and do nothing.” thefloatspa.co.uk 01273 933 680

The benefits of sea swimming.

By Claudine Rane Photo by: Justine Desmond

ea swimming is one of those things that is supposed to be very good for you but I have never really done – like eating kale or Pilates. I’ve always been far too scared of the cold sea. But sea swimming really is supposed to be very good for us and living in Brighton and Hove provides such a fantastic opportunity to do so. For centuries, it’s been believed that the sea has positive mental and physical effects on the human body. But recently, health professionals are beginning to embrace this idea. There’s plenty of science behind it – cold water immersion releases endorphins, serotine and dopamine. Saltwater contains magnesium, which is thought to help release stress. The cold water increases circulation and boosts energy levels. Fortunately, there are plenty of people who are not as scared as I am! Sea swimming is growing in

ISSUE TWO | APRIL 2022

popularity, with more and more of us braving the waters and enjoying the benefits. Claudine Rane is one of them. I‘ve always loved the sea. Sitting by it, looking at it, listening to it and paddling in it. It’s always been my therapy. One spring day I saw some swimmers come out of a very chilly sea, and something about them intrigued me. Perhaps I noticed their glow and grins as they emerged. I walked over to chat to them. I said wistfully, “I wish I could do that,” and they all looked at me and said: “why can’t you?” “Good question,” I thought. It just hadn’t occurred to me that it was possible - for me. So I went in the freezing April sea, in a swimsuit and shoes, and I felt the incredible buzz. I was hooked! It was utterly joyous! I have just swum my fourth winter, and it is now definitely ‘my thing.’ I swim because it gives me freedom from my every-day

stresses. The cold water gives my vagus nerve a boost which helps my nervous system settle, like a reset. I swim because it gets me into nature and I am in awe of the sea in all weathers, and because I have found an incredible tribe of supportive, kind, funny friends. I swim because the positive impact it has had on my body image has been profound. I now appreciate what my body can do, how it can get in cold water, dive through waves and swim for miles. I no longer worry about the wobbly bits or spend all my time trying to shrink them. I am now a Body Image and Blue Health coach, helping women make peace with their bodies and discover their true worth, value and confidence. And I help them get in the sea if they, like old me, wish that they could.
