The surgery is hoping to set up a patient reference group that is representative of all our patients. We are hoping to hear from young people, carers, people with disabilities and ethnicity backgrounds. If you are able to help us with this either by attending meetings or by giving your views via email please contact Jo Wadey - Practice Manager by email jowadey@nhs.net or phone 01903 222902.

Calendar of Events August 2010

Health Promotion Day and Official Opening • Worthing Silver Band & Mr Pumpkin • Celebration cakes and teas • Health and Well-being checks • Emergency service vehicles Extremely well-attended - lots of interest in the new facilities and accommodation. The new waiting-room incorporating ideas from Northbrook College Design students was extremely well received and many of the additional extras were funded by the Friends of St. Lawrence.

December 2010

The Coffee Morning and talk regarding how to look after yourself in the Winter and how to avoid falls had to be cancelled. We were concerned we would have more slips, trips and falls on the ice and snow that was around on that day. For the first year, the PPG committee members sold the Christmas Draw tickets at the flu clinics, whilst the patients were waiting - a captive audience. Thanks to generous donations and fantastic support from patients our Grand Christmas Draw raised £636. This money is ear-marked to help the development of our Patient Library and Information Centre.

February 2011

Once again our Annual Quiz Night at the Old Palace was a sell-out. The friendly and relaxed atmosphere and entertainment was enjoyed by all. The Ever Hopefuls (appropriately named) were this year’s winners and the event raised £450 towards the Patient Library.

April 2011

More recently, the Friends provided refreshments for a series of events for Carers and patients with specific medical problems. This commitment was appreciated by all those concerned.

Since our last newsletter we have continued to raise funds through our own efforts and by the kind donations from appreciative patients. Our major expenditure (£8 000) helped to furnish the new waiting room to a high standard. The new interactive white-board in the Education Room was partly funded by the local PCT and has proved to be a valuable addition in talks and presentations. A PA system was recently purchased to be used at public events and also in the Education Room for talks. In addition, we recently purchased a specialist reclining bed to be used by doctors and nurses. We will continue to help fund equipment/resources required by the surgery but not normally available through the NHS – the important little extras.

Gladys Edy has been busy knitting chickens stuffed with chocolate Easter eggs and they have been very popular, thanks Gladys!

May 2011

Our Annual General Meeting was held in the Education Room on Thursday 19th May. The business part of the meeting focused on the revised constitution, which was approved. There was also the election of officers and committee members. After the meeting we welcomed Dr James Read, who gave a talk under the title “A Day in the Life of a GP.” Those present found it both enjoyable and enlightening. If you are interested in joining the committee or otherwise helping, please contact our Secretary Lucy Toghill on 01903 536506.

July 2011

This year’s Health Promotion Day will be held on Wednesday 6th July between 1.00p.m and 5.00p.m. During the course of the afternoon we will be targeting different age groups to join. More details will be available nearer the time but plans are already underway. Dispensary - we hope to open by 18th July 2011. We will be opening Saturday mornings from 23rd July 9am-12noon for pre-bookable appointments and family planning. before waiting room

Patient Information

We are currently exploring the idea of a Patient Library and Information Centre. This I am sure will be a welcome addition to the information already provided by the surgery. It will take time to evolve so watch this space. We liaise with the surgery on a regular basis and attend local and area meetings of other Patient Participation Groups. The need to clarify our role has become apparent over the past two years hence the revision of our constitution which has to be formally approved by the Charity Commission. Our role is to support the work of the surgery - we are not a vehicle for complaints or concerns - the surgery has a mechanism/procedure to deal with these. Suggestion/compliments box - this has now been fixed to the wall next to the Friends of St Lawrence Surgery notice board.

Support

The committee has been supported by several patients during the past nine months. Their work is greatly appreciated by all concerned.

Missing Paintings

Unfortunately we have had nine paintings stolen over the last few months. Sadly this means we have now removed them all, which is a terrible shame. We are working with the art club to see if we can purchase some more secure fixings.
