Understanding Alphabet Creams

issue 7 jan - mar 2014

facialco.co m . au

Introducing our brand new summer must-have... PROTECTION PLUS DAILY SPF50+ The cumulative effect of year-round daily exposure to UV light, pollution and environmental stress doesn’t just leave our skins looking superficially dull and tired, photo-ageing becomes more magnified the deeper it travels… The use of a broad spectrum UVA/UVB moisturiser is the only effective way of helping the skin to resist these complex and profound changes. In addition to the latest in sun filter technology, Protection Plus Daily SPF50+ utilises two of nature’s own UV absorbers in the form of Pomegranate Oil and Mango Seed Butter. Pomegranate has remarkable anti-oxidant, anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing properties thanks largely to its ability to penetrate deeply into the skin, where it can increase cell regeneration and Collagen production. Extracted from the de-shelled kernels of the Mango tree, this silky, light, exotic butter soothes and quenches dry skin and is used in rain forests and the tropics for its softening, nourishing properties and its effectiveness as a natural sun protection. Supplementing these conditioning and protective ingredients is Pycnogenol - a super anti-oxidant made from the bark of the French Maritime Pine Tree. This wonder ingredient makes the skin more age-resistant, it also helps to brighten the complexion, smooth fine lines and diminish the appearance of brown spots. Protection Plus Daily SPF50+ Size: 50ml | RRP: $59.95

welcome

Sun Protection Factor (SPF) 50+ has finally been approved for sale in Australia, which is great news. Several brands have begun releasing their new SPF50+ products to the market just in time for summer with some very impressive formulations that feel like you’re not wearing a sunscreen at all. If you have a phobia about applying SPF products on your face then try one of the new SPF50+ products, you might not even know you’re wearing it. Many of us are still confused about what exactly a BB cream is. (Is it a new type of foundation or the new name for tinted moisturisers?) Where do CC and DD creams fit in to the mix and how do they differ from BB creams? Confused? Don’t be. We explain them all in our “Alphabet Creams” article on page 8.

Alphabet creams

The latest buzz in the beauty world at the moment is BBs, CCs and DDs…and no we’re not talking about the size of women’s lingerie either, we’re referring to alphabet formulations, which are multi-tasking products that have evolved from the likes of the standard foundation or tinted moisturisers. It’s likely that you are already familiar with the term BB Cream or have heard it mentioned quite a lot around beauty counters, but with the addition of a few similar all-in-one products also entering the market, such as CC and DD Creams, you’re probably getting a bit confused. Let’s break them all down for you!

NOW I KNOW MY B, C, D'S BB Creams

CC Creams

DD Creams

First popular in Asia in the 1980’s, BB Creams, also known firstly as ‘Blemish Balms’ and more recently ‘Beauty Balms’, provide tinted coverage to even out your skin tone, plus sun protection, hydration and various other skin care benefits, including soothing and priming your skin. Depending on the brand, BB Creams are generally lighter than a typical foundation, but heavier than tinted moisturisers. BB Creams are the one product that can take care of all your skin care needs!

The versatile CC Creams are slightly different to BB Creams. CC stands for ‘Colour Correction, however, it has also been hailed as ‘Colour Control’ and its primary purpose is to address skin tone issues, like neutralising redness and counteracting dullness, pigmentation or even acne. With better coverage than BB Creams, CC Creams, packed with vitamins, are basically lighter on the skin and have a whipped mousse like feel, but once again these features vary among the different brands. Overall though, CC Creams are certain to simplify your skin care routine, taking away the need to layer on numerous products.

Finally, taking multitasking to an even greater level are DD Creams, which are considered the RollsRoyce of Alphabet Creams and although still quite rare at the moment, they are expected to flood the market in the not so distant future. DD, aka ‘Dynamic-Do-All’ Creams (labelled ‘Daily Defence’ and ‘Dermatologically Defining’ by some brands) combine the benefits of BB and CC Creams, with their primary focus being antiageing. DD Creams will help target fine lines and wrinkles, while diffusing light, protecting your skin and perfecting the skin tone. When used over time, DD Creams will improve the appearance of your complexion and deliver serious results.

Ideal for: The younger audience or those with a good complexion who require a minimal makeup look, suitable for everyday use.

Tip: If the coverage isn’t enough, try using your BB Cream as a primer before your regular foundation.

10 ~ facialco.com.au

Ideal for: Those

with problem skin or uneven skintones.

Tip: If you want

coverage similar to your regular foundation then a CC Cream may be just what you are looking for.

Ideal for: Mature

skins, those who want to conceal and reduce the signs of premature ageing.

Discover Australia’s 1st cosmeceutical mineral make-up range What is mineral make-up? Mineral make-up is composed of naturally occurring minerals that have been compressed into fine micro-particles. Compared to traditional make-up, mineral make-up generally contains no artificial colours, oils, perfumes or preservatives, making it perfect for all skin types. Mineral make-up interacts with light and bounces off the skin to create a soft focus effect that can reduce the appearance of ageing. Why is mineral make-up so beneficial? Mineral make-up has anti-inflammatory properties, making it perfect for those with problematic skin conditions such as acne, eczema and rosacea, who want natural, flawless looking skin. Mineral make-up can also offer you protection from the sun, while allowing the skin and pores to breathe, reducing redness, dryness and blemishes. Why asap pure mineral make-up? asap pure combines natural ingredients derived from the earth, with the latest advances in skin technology to leave a radiant finish and improve skin health. Using revolutionary skin brightening active chromabright™ and Hyaluronic Acid Microspheres to help reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, asap pure cosmeceutical mineral make-up ensures sheer, flawless coverage, SPF15 protection and beautiful luminosity for all skin types.

ExpErt tips to pErfEct your look PREPARE + APPLY Open the asap pure mineral base sifter, then turn the product upside down and gently tap a small amount of powder into the silver lid. Using the asap pure kabuki brush, swirl and rotate the brush around the lid, and buff product into skin to create an even base for make-up application. Match the asap pure mineral make-up colour with chest or shoulder to select the correct shade. Buff product in and use the asap pure concealer brush to apply more product where needed.

BRONZE To create a sun–kissed look, apply asap pure mineral bronzer around the edges of the face (as this is typically where the face catches the sun) and the high apples of the cheeks. Apply in a circular motion to avoid hard lines.

EYES Choosing an opposing colour will really enhance the eyes. Soft rose golds into bronzes work well on blue eyes, while pinks, plums or purples make green and hazel eyes pop. Brown eyes are neutral, so can wear almost any colour. With 12 shades available, asap pure mineral eye colour blends easily and offers crease free, long-lasting wear.

LIPS Apply ASAP hydrating lip balm+ before commencing make-up to ensure lips are soft and ready to apply asap pure mineral lipcolour. When using a lip pencil, select a shade that matches the natural lip colour or is similar to the lipstick. Never use a lip colour lighter than the skin tone or a lip pencil darker than the lip shade.

What are they? Serums, which are also known as skin boosters, are best described as a skincare product that contains a high concentration of performance ingredients in a liquid or gel form that is easily absorbed by the skin. Serums are the essential step if you want to do more than just maintain your skin, as they are formulated to assist with specific skin concerns. Typical ingredients include antioxidant Vitamins such A, B and C, Hyaluronic Acid or botanical oils such as Rosehip and Jojoba.

When are they used? Serums are applied after the cleansing and toning step, prior to moisturiser. They may be applied in the morning or at night depending on the brand and the concern that they are being used for. In some cases, two or more serums are layered on the skin to promote intense skin benefits. In this situation water based serums should be applied before oil based ones.

+ 50

The Introduction of SPF50+

is the new 30

The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration (TGA) recently approved the sale of SPF50+ sunscreen in Australia, which is great news for us Aussie sun lovers. The approval has seen several skincare companies launch new SPF50+ products, many bearing very impressive new formulations, just in time for summer.

What has changed? The SPF rating of a product refers to the amount of UVB protection that is provided. The rating for UVB rays has remained the same; however UVA protection has had to be improved. It is important to use a sunscreen that is “broad spectrum which provides protection against UVA (which damages collagen and elastin and results in premature ageing) and UVB (which results in sunburn and is a factor in the development of skin cancers). The + sign which appears on the new SPF50+ products means that it has been tested to the level of SPF60. This removes the margins of error that can occur when testing batches of sunscreen in different laboratories using different testing methods. Other additions to sunscreens include antioxidants such as Pomegranate (found in Alpha-H Protection Plus Daily SPF50+) which help to protect against free radical damage as well as provide antiinflammatory and anti-ageing properties.

Q – Do you have

any tips on how to strengthen my nails, which won't grow and always rip very easily?

FacialCo – I would start with always protecting your hands and nails by wearing gloves for household chores, and avoiding soaking with water when washing dishes by hand. Product wise, I would recommend a good hand cream regularly applied and massaged well into the cuticles such as Simplicite Nourishing Hand and Nail Crème, and a nail fortifier to help encourage stronger nails. 24 ~ facialco.com.au

Q & A therapy hour

Read some of the beauty questions we have received during the live Therapy Hour Session on our Facebook page in the last couple of months. Q – When using a serum, how

long must you wait before you go over with a moisturiser? And what is the purpose of serums really? FacialCo – A serum should be applied to a clean skin; they contain a high concentration of active ingredients to work in the deeper layers of the skin. We recommend waiting at least a minute for the formula to absorb before applying your moisturiser.

Q – Would you be able to

recommend a sunscreen with a matte finish - preferably SPF30+ or higher? FacialCo – Skinceuticals Ultimate UV Defense SPF30 provides thorough broad spectrum protection whilst leaving the skin moisturised and shine free.

Q – To prevent breakouts when

working out, should I cleanse before and after, or just after? FacialCo – Definitely cleanse before and after, especially if you are wearing makeup. Cleansing wipes are very handy for pre/ post exercise cleansing. I like Payot Lingettes Demaquillantes 3 In 1 Cleansing Wipes.

Q – What's the best mascara for lengthening and volume?

FacialCo – One of our absolute

favourites is Eye of Horus Natural Mascara; using natural waxes that are beneficial for the lash itself, this formula helps to lengthen, thicken and define the lashes, with no clumping or smudging.

Q – I've been told that as

I have dry skin toning isn't essential; is that correct? FacialCo – Generally the use of a toner is brand and formulation dependent. Toners are recommended according to what cleanser is used prior rather than to skin type. For example if you are using a cream cleanser for a dry skin they usually have a matching toner. A well formulated toner for dry skin will also contain ingredients that aid in moisturising the skin and will usually be alcohol free. With a dry skin you would not use toners designed for oily or acne skins as along with completing the cleaning process they assist with sebum control or anti-bacterial action.

Q – At what age should

one start using 'Anti-Ageing' products? FacialCo – It depends; the best anti-aging product is a broad spectrum sunscreen so the earlier that is used consis tently the better, as most sun damage and its resulting photo aging is done before the age of 18 (especially in Australia). From your twenties is probably the best time to start adding general skin strengtheners in the form of anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C and B. More specific ingredients should be added as the need arises i.e. AHAs to help when pigmentation surfaces.

Treatments

Q – I have a lot of congestion around my chin and I’m not sure how to get rid of it. I cleanse, tone and exfoliate as well as moisturising, but still it just won't budge. Would you please be able to advise? FacialCo – Often congestion around the chin can be hormonal and if that is the only problem area of your skin, you can just do spot treatments with specialised products. I would recommend products with salicylic acid and Vitamin A which help to clean inside the follicles and assist with cellular turnover. Luzern Serum Absolut Control is great for a spot treatment as you would just apply to the area concerned. Q – I have a dull and dusky

skin, can you please suggest something for improving the colour of my skin and removing the dullness? FacialCo – The Pelactiv Vita C range has two serums, which were formulated to help combat the visible signs of ageing and to improve the appearance of skin discolouration and lighten pigmentation. If you have not used much AHAs on your skin in the past, I would recommend starting with the Rapid-C Serum and once you are finished on that treatment, you can then switch over to the Rapid-C Serum + AHA.

Q – Is it OK to use products

with glycolic acid on a daily basis? I.e. the Alpha H range? FacialCo – The short answer is yes. However there are things to take into consideration. When using glycolics or other AHA's on a regular basis, it is important to use a good sunscreen as they can make the skin more sun sensitive. It is possible to over exfoliate so generally speaking you do not need every product to be glycolic based.

Q –I have oily skin and live in

a humid part of Australia and am looking for suggestions for a moisturiser that would be suitable for using during the sticky summer months? FacialCo – The Pelactiv Oil-Free Balancing Serum is perfect for oily skin types. It contains Bilberry which works as a natural mattifier to absorb excess oil, while still helping to hydrate your skin and help treat any congestion or breakouts.

Q – What's the best way to

minimise pore size - I have tried heaps of products but nothing seems to work? FacialCo – Unfortunately you cannot permanently reduce the size of your pores as they are decided by genetics. You can use Guinot's Microbiotic Toning Lotion if you have oily skin

Talk to our beauty experts live on Facebook every Thursday at 12pm AEST. facebook.com/facialco.com.au

26 ~ facialco.com.au

and this will help to contract the pores during the day, but it won't provide a permanent effect. Additionally, pores can often appear larger if there is a build-up of dead skin cells, so always remember to exfoliate.

Q – The skin on my feet

feels really dehydrated lately and I'm looking for something I can rub in at night before going to bed, but without having to put on socks as it's far too hot; any recommendations? FacialCo – Exfoliate to remove dry skin first then treat your feet with Payot Cooling Powdered Foot Gel.

Q – I was wondering if

you could recommend a peel to use at home for pigmentation? FacialCo – I would recommend a kit for treating pigmentation at home as a multi targeted approach to get the best results. A kit containing skin brightening ingredients, like the Alpha-H Advanced Anti-Pigmentation Kit would work best.

Q – What is in suncream to protect our skin?

FacialCo – Sunscreens can

have a variety of ingredients that protect the skin, physical ingredients such as zinc oxide and titanium oxide. Ingredients also include those that absorb UV radiation such as oxybenzone, Octyl methoxycinnamate, Avobenzone, Octyl salicylate.
