What Peptides are and how they work Peptides are proteins in the form of amino acids. They work by increasing skin cell communication to encourage and promote healthy skin cell behaviour and repair without irritation or inflammation. For instance, when collagen breaks down, it signals that it needs repair; topical application of peptides helps to trigger this action. The various peptides have different uses, with their structure determining their action in cosmetic formulations. Some may be used as neurotransmitters to transmit signals from the nerves to the muscles, helping to soften the lines caused by repetitive facial muscle movements. Others are used to stimulate the production of healthy collagen in the skin, which leads to the plumping of skin over time. Peptides such as Myristoyl Pentapeptide are used in lash conditioners as they help to encourage lash growth.

Certain results of peptide use, such as improved skin texture, are usually seen quickly, whereas the improvement in the skin’s underlying tone is seen after some time. A younger skin may start to see results in 28 days, whilst a more mature skin can take up to two months to see similar results. In order to maintain the results, regular use of peptide-containing skincare with additional antioxidants and other skin beneficial ingredients is recommended over the long term.

Smudgy winged liner Apply eyeliner along the roots of your lashes, creating a thicker line towards the outer corner. Again, either use a precision brush or cotton tip to smudge out the line and drag the pigment out into a smudgy wing at the outer corner.
Vampy Eye This is a bold approach that could work in the day time with a softer brown, grey or taupe, or completely vamped up for the night with a bold black or metallic shade. This approach means you will need to be slightly more heavy-handed with your liner. Use your liner along the top eyelashes, getting right in between the lashes. Do the same on the lower lashes, then use your smudger brush or cotton tip to smoke out
along the lashes and blend out on your eyelid. You can build up the intensity by adding more liner and then smudging until you create your desired look.
Smokey Eye This final and perhaps most intense eye is one that many struggle with, but is possibly the easiest to achieve. The key to this look is to not be too precise and smudge, smudge, smudge! The best smokey eyes tend to be those that are slightly undone. For this look you can just place liner along the top lashes or go for the bottom lash too, depending on the intensity you are after. You can also use different eyeliner shades depending on day or night. A deep purple or green/olive eyeliner looks great on hazel, brown and green eyes, and a bronze brings out blue eyes, but of course you can use any colour that takes your fancy. This is very similar to the vampy eye, but instead of just placing eyeliner at the roots of your lashes you will continue further up onto your eyelid. Again, the trick to not overdoing this look is to do it in layers and build intensity, as it's much easier to add than it is to take away. april - june 2014

a product range with AHAs and BHAs, as these ingredients help to regulate oil flow, minimise breakouts and refine skin tone. ASAP is a great range for these concerns. Q - Which eye cream best addresses dark circles? I find most are great on fine lines and puffiness but not great on dark circles? FacialCo - One of
my favourite all-round eye cream is the HydroPeptide Eye Anti-Wrinkle Dark Circle Concentrate.
Q - I was wondering if you could recommend what skin regime I should be using. I have been told to use toner, all sorts of scrubs etc. I have combination skin leaning towards oily & uneven skin tone & mild acne but mainly blackheads. What products should I be using to treat my skin on a daily basis?
Alpha-H C & E Serums every morning and in the evening, alternating with their other products. I am thinking of trying the ASAP Vitamin B serum; should I stop the Vitamin E and replace, or can I just add the Vitamin B into my routine?
FacialCo –Vitamin C is best
used in the mornings, as it usually stays in the skin for 24 hours. Vitamin E is used to "lock in" Vitamin C to avoid evaporation. If you wish to incorporate a Vitamin B Serum into your routine, I would consider using B in the evening so you're not applying too many products in the morning.
Q - I'm currently using Pelactiv products for my combination blemish prone skin. Can you suggest a (not too pricey) tinted moisturiser or similarly easy no-fuss product that won't clog my skin? FacialCo - Glad to hear you are using Pelactiv, this is a sensational product range for combination skin. I would recommend the Ultraderm All in
One Balm with SPF15+. It is a multi-tasking skin enhancing cream, designed to provide a flawless, natural finish with broad-spectrum sun protection.
Q - Could you recommend a good retinol product for mild breakouts, uneven skin tone, improving skin texture and mild pigmentation? I'm thirty years old and currently use Skinstitut Retinol. Also, do you recommend using AHAs with retinol? My neck is a bit red and has a slight rash, which I know is due to starting retinol therapy. I also don't know whether to use an exfoliant whilst using retinol?
FacialCo - Skinstitut has an exfoliating mask called Skinstitut Enzymatic Micro Peel and they also make the Skinstitut Hydrating Mask. In order to avoid over exfoliating, I would recommend using the Micro Peel, particularly if you are acclimatising to the Retinol Serum. However, you can also continue to use the Alpha-H masks, too! Q - Could you please tell me what the difference is between SPF 50 and SPF 30?

FacialCo - I would suggest a fragrance-free product such as Trilogy’s Very Gentle Cleansing Cream. It has been designed for sensitive skins, which would suit young skin as well. Q - I have recently commenced retinol-A therapy (0.025%). Could you suggest a gentle, soap free cleanser please? FacialCo - You could consider the Skinstitut Gentle Cleanser, as it is non-glycolic and fragrance-free. Q - Hi, what product would you recommend for keratosis pilaris on the backs of arms? FacialCo - Regular exfoliation with an active exfoliant can help to keep KP under control. You could try incorporating a body wash or scrub and moisturiser with AHAs into your body care routine, such as the revitalising body scrub and revitalising body moist from asap".

Q - I currently use Dermalogica SPF30 primer which is getting low, and I also have the Ultraceuticals CC Cream; will this work just as well as a primer, or do have another suggestion for a primer? FacialCo - BB and CC creams can be used as primers; it just depends on the coverage that you want. For more coverage use a BB cream, as it also contains colour. If you don't need full cover and prefer a light and sheer finish, use a primer only product, such as the gloMinerals Face Primer. Q -I've noticed that during
summer my skincare and makeup that contains SPF can sometimes make my face sting when it's really hot, and my skin gets all sweaty/ clammy. Is this caused by a certain sunscreen ingredient that maybe I should avoid, or can you recommend something better that won’t sting my skin?
FacialCo - Not sure what products you are using at the moment, but using lightweight formulas and sunscreens that are oil-free would be the best option. Mineral powder foundations are a great way to protect skin, and they usually don't ‘melt’ and slide off the skin. One of our newest brands, which is proving to be very popular, is the Jane Iredale
range of mineral makeup. For an SPF try one of the new SPF50s such as Mesoestetic Dermatological Sun Protection SPF 50+, or the new Alpha-H Protection Plus Daily SPF 50+.
Q - How do I treat whiteheads? I've started getting more of them than blackheads! FacialCo - If you are getting them all over, then a product range designed for a problem skin. Try the Dermalogica mediBac Clearing Skin Kit, or the Alpha-H Clear Skin Kit. Q - What are the best skincare products you can advise for comedones on my chin and around the bottom of my nose? Already using tretinoin every night and wash my face twice daily with a mild exfoliator, but current products don't seem to be helping? FacialCo - Depending on how long have you have been using the tretinoin, it can take a while for it to improve and in some cases, it will get worse before it gets better. A Salicylic Acid product would be best to incorporate into your routine. Q - I read somewhere recently a recommendation not to cleanse in the morning because your skin has been working overnight to restore natural oils and by cleansing, you are stripping it of moisture, and as a result your skin will just produce more oil, much like washing your hair too often. Is there any truth in that? I've always cleansed morning and night. FacialCo -It will depend on your skin and its condition. Some drier and more delicate skins are able to do this without an issue. However if you have oily or acneic skin, it would not be recommended. Another thing to consider is your cleanser. If you are using a poorly formulated foaming cleanser, it will strip the skin and leave it feeling dry and tight. If you use a cleanser for your skin type, it will not strip the skin of moisture. If you consider that night time is the time for skin repair, it makes sense to cleanse in the morning as skin cells have shed and need removal so that your serums and moisturisers can work effectively.
