HEADLINING: Camino Gold

When it comes to the archetypal indie band, you don’t have to look much further than Camino Gold. It’s a real classic ‘mates first and bandmates second’ outfit, going round the gigging scene playing show after show and climbing the ladder. Even on stage Camino Gold has the classic presence and look: four guys, beaten-up guitars, loud sounds, psychedelic button-ups, and long salty hair. Since their start in 2019 the guys have gotten four solid singles under their belt, Triple J and Unearthed radio plays, and have gone as far as playing the iconic Oxford Art Factory.

But being in an indie band is no cakewalk – it takes some serious dedication and determination, so how did we get here? Well, Camino Gold’s guitarist and part-time cowboy, Marcus, has a story to tell. Beyond the chilled-out looks and tunes are some seriously talented guys with serious ambitions.

A few years ago, four guys from Newy decided to get together and start jamming for a bit of fun. After laying down some tunes together, they quickly released they’d caught a bit of lightning in a bottle.

“We all just clicked as soon as we played together, so we knew it was something we could seriously pursue,” Marcus said. “We started off just jamming out in the garage, and then got a few gigs here and there at the local, then we started just gigging around Newcastle and stuff, recording and started getting a bit of a following.” From there, things kept steadily growing for the Camino Gold boys.

“We had some luck with triple j playing our songs, which was pretty cool,” Marcus said, and from here the boys have a continuing ambition that is bound to serve them well. “We see ourselves going on the festival scene,” he said. “We’d love to play splendour – that’d be a dream.”

In between that dream and the present, Marcus says Camino Gold has been spending its time gigging and working on upcoming releases.

“We’ve been recording three songs this weekend; we’re just hoping to get them out,” he said. “We’re thinking of releasing a few singles, then an EP could be on the cards, I reckon.”

“I’d say [the new music] is sonically hard to describe,” Marcus said. “It’s different from our previous stuff. We’re sort of growing; it’s another level with better production and stuff.”

From here Camino Gold has big plans and the dedication to get there. With new music in the works and more shows planned, you’ll likely hear from them soon.
