Director Ari Folman Starring Robin Wright, Harvey Keitel, John Hamm Israel/Poland/ Luxembourg/France/Germany 2013 123 mins
In a post-apocalyptic world, Eric (Pearce, Lawless) has his car stolen by three ruthless outlaws led by Henry (McNairy, Argo). The chase is then on for Eric to recover his car, a hunt that soon involves Henry’s injured brother Rey (Pattinson, Cosmopolis). David Michôd’s bleakly atmospheric film – which packs the same visceral punch as his Animal Kingdom – has all the atmospheric desperation of The Road and the Mad Max saga.
A student (Johansson) is kidnapped and surgically implanted with a vial containing a mysterious substance. Although the substance is designed to substantially increase the brain’s processing power, it may kill her if it leaks into her body – which it does. Aided by a sympathetic police captain (Waked, Syriana), she rushes desperately to seek help from renowned psychologist Professor Samuel Norman (Freeman), even as her cerebral skills are multiplying exponentially. As medical science comes ever closer to enhancing human intelligence, this gripping story also possesses a stark topicality.

Sandra (Cotillard) returns to work after a bout of depression to find that her co-workers have voted her out of a job in favour of a €1,000 bonus. Her boss gives her a weekend to change their minds, prompting a series of confrontations that test both Sandra’s ingenuity and her colleagues’ scruples in this expertly understated social drama.

Folman’s follow-up to Waltz with Bashir is an imaginative combination of live and animated action. An ageing actress (Wright) takes one last role, and submits to a scanning process that will preserve her image forever. When she’s then invited to attend the Futurological Congress, she encounters the animator responsible. Based on a novel by Stanisław Lem (Solaris), The Congress is both a sobering comment on fame’s transience and a dazzling visual feast.

Preview Double Bill – see p.24 Directors Frank Miller, Robert Rodriguez Starring Jessica Alba, Mickey Rourke, Josh Brolin USA 2014 102 mins
Based on Frank Miller’s hard-boiled comics, the much-anticipated sequel to 2005’s Sin City reprises many of its central characters, filmed in the same ingenious mix of stylised graphics and live action. Inconsolable after the death of her lover, goldhearted stripper Nancy (Alba) sets the deeply noir tone by announcing, “Maybe I’ll go crazy” – and then we’re off on an electrifying ride as subplots interconnect for a thunderous climax.

This is the first thrilling adaptation of the bestselling Department Q novels by Jussi Adler-Olsen. Disgraced detective Carl Mørck (Kaas, The Killing) is reassigned to a basementbound job filing cold cases. Together he and his smart young assistant, Assad (Fares), get drawn into the mystery of a missing politician, and embark on a dangerous journey into Copenhagen’s dark underworld.

Following an accident, Christine (Kidman) wakes up every morning without any memory of her past or even who she is. She relies on her husband, Ben (Firth), to get through the day, but when she begins seeing a sympathetic doctor (Strong), she gradually discovers that her situation and especially her marriage are not what they seem. Based on S. J. Watson’s novel and directed by award-winning screenwriter Rowan Joffe (The American), this is a riveting psychological drama with a terrific cast exploiting its many unsettling twists.
PicturehouseatFACT
After the obvious slapstick of We’re the Millers, Aniston stretches herself impressively as kidnapped housewife Mickey Dawson in this Elmore Leonard crime caper, with solid support from Def and Hawkes, who demand a ransom from her cheating husband (a wonderfully arrogant Robbins). This typically wry yarn from Leonard is directed with unshowy skill by its screenwriter, Daniel Schechter, the chemistry between Aniston and Hawkes in particular rendering it exceptionally watchable.

Director Anton Corbijn Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Willem Dafoe, Robin Wright UK/USA 2014 122 mins
In Corbijn’s (The American) appropriately shadowy adaptation of John le Carré’s post-9/11 thriller, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays the head of Hamburg’s antiterrorist unit on the trail of a jihad mastermind. With perfectly calibrated plot twists courtesy of Lantana screenwriter Andrew Bovell executed in understated style, this is a great ensemble piece with characters rather than individual actors driving the action.
Director Matthew Warchus Starring Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West UK 2014 120 mins
Director Anthony Baxter Featuring Donald Trump, Robert F Kennedy Jnr UK 2014 102 mins
It’s 1984 and the Miners’ Strike is causing great hardship, especially in one remote Welsh pit village. Despite some misgivings, a group of young gay activists led by bolshy Mark Ashton (Ben Schnetzer) decide to raise money for the community, but when they travel down to deliver the funds they’re unprepared for the homophobia that greets them. In only his second film, noted theatre director Matthew Warchus (Matilda the Musical) expertly finesses knowing humour, indignation and sexual politics, while the performances are uniformly pitch-perfect.
The game here is the superficially benign pursuit of golf. But director Baxter’s coruscating 2011 documentary You’ve Been Trumped exposed Donald Trump’s plans to build a golf resort on ecologically endangered Scottish coastline, and this film literally revisits the same territory while also recording a remarkably similar struggle taking place near Dubrovnik. In both cases public opposition is treated with disdain, but ultimately truth and reason prevail.
Directors Iain Forsyth, Jane Pollard Featuring: Nick Cave, Kylie Minogue, Ray Winstone, Blixa Bargeld, Warren Ellis UK 2014 97 mins
Nick Cave explores his own life and creative processes through dreamlike conversations with friends and collaborators. Defying traditional rockumentary aesthetics, 20,000 Days On Earth is an extraordinarily intimate portrait of one of music’s most mysterious and charismatic figures.

Director Woody Allen Starring Colin Firth, Emma Stone, Jacki Weaver USA 2014 98 mins
Allen’s latest has delightful echoes of Midnight in Paris, both thematically and stylistically. Colin Firth plays stage magician Stanley Crawford, lured to the Cote d’Azur between the wars to investigate a glamorous clairvoyant (Stone, Crazy Stupid Love). But in his efforts to unmask her, he of course falls for her. Allen’s film revels in lush period settings and the mannered charm of the era. Contains moderate sex references.
DATE & TIME
Director David Cronenberg Starring Julianne Moore, Mia Wasikowska, Robert Pattinson, John Cusack, Olivia Williams Canada/USA/Germany/France 2014 112 mins
Welcome to Hollywood, Cronenberg style. This riveting psychological thriller boasts a gripping plot and stunning performances. Moore won Best Actress at Cannes for her portrayal of over-the-hill actress Havana; Wasikowska is Agatha, new to LA and keen to get work. They are supported by a starry ensemble of characters, all of them both bitterly funny and devastatingly revealing about family, ambition and commerce.

Liverpool Biennial 2014: Sharon Lockhart Galleries 1, 2 & Public Spaces / FREE Entry / Tue – Sun / 11am – 6pm
FACT and Liverpool Biennial present the first UK solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart. Known for creating film and photography portraying often overlooked subjects in everyday life, Lockhart’s practice is underpinned by a commitment to immersing herself in new environments and building intimate relationships with people and places. Perhaps the most significant of these is her friendship with a young Polish girl Milena, with whom she has formed a continuing collaboration, three separate aspects of which are now on show at FACT.

A retired actor (Fabrice Luchini, Potiche) is living grumpily on a French island when a TV soap star turns up and invites him to appear in Molière’s The Misanthrope. This witty study of the grudging friends’ sparring over a local divorcee echoes Truffaut’s Jules et Jim.
Drifter Gary (Tahar Rahim, A Prophet) is hired at a dangerously run-down nuclear plant, and embarks on a reckless affair with a co-worker’s fiancée (Léa Seydoux, Blue is the Warmest Colour). Zlotowski’s second feature is grittily compelling.
A trio of super-bright, super-cynical business students apply the ruthless capitalist logic they study by day to the college prostitution ring they run by night. This raunchy and brutally funny film dissects the power plays and factions at an ultra-elite university, and in doing so lays bare the mores of France’s Generation Y.
When an eleven-yearold girl jumps to her death, social services seem unable to discover why. Avranas’s second feature is a shocking family drama, and a powerful dissection of silence, manipulation and the exercise of power.

Unknown beyond a small, passionate fan base, Memphis power-pop band Big Star hugely influenced a broader musical constituency. Chris Bell and Alex Chilton – both now deceased – were the band’s Lennon and McCartney, crafting hard-edged yet poignant teen anthems. But despite massive critical acclaim, Big Star’s career was woefully mishandled by their record companies, and before the release of their third album they disbanded in despair. Four decades after that break-up, this documentary pays them due homage.
Interviews with cycling Olympians such as Chris Hoy and Dannielle Khan, and fascinating accounts of the historical and technical development of the pedalling machine and its effect on society, are key elements in BAFTA-winning director Clifford’s infectiously enthusiastic homage to the BICYCLE.

20,000 Days on Earth is a bold look at one of music’s most mysterious and charismatic figures: Nick Cave. But although it contains electrifying performance scenes, this is no concert film. Instead it presents Cave’s exploration of his own life and creative processes through conversations with his friends, collaborators and even a psychoanalyst. Defying traditional rockumentary aesthetics, the directors offer an extraordinarily intimate vision of the artist.
Salomé (recorded play) At a birthday feast for King Herod (Al Pacino), his stepdaughter, Princess Salomé (Jessica Chastain), discovers the imprisoned John the Baptist and is immediately infatuated with him. Rebuffed by the prisoner, Salomé entices her lecherous stepfather with the promise of completing the erotic Dance of the Seven Veils, if he will grant her one wish…
Wilde Salomé (documentary) Director Al Pacino takes us on a personal journey as he unravels and reinterprets Oscar Wilde’s once banned, controversial work Salomé.

Community & Learning Human Beeings Big Bees on Big Buildings We’ve teamed up with Berlin based art and technology collective, The Constitute to bring Human Beeing to Liverpool. The project has set up bee hives on urban facades in Helsinki, Berlin and Liverpool. Here in Liverpool we have partnered with Beekeeper Andrew Hubbard and students from The Academy of St Francis of Assisi to care for a hive situated on the roof of the school. As well as looking after the bees, the students have been filming the hive daily. Footage will be used to projection-map onto Ropewalks Square at a special event with talks, food and music in October. Look out for more info on our website!
