This month at FACT we are very excited to welcome back Liverpool Biennial to FACT. For the 2014 edition of the festival, we are hosting the first UK solo show from American artist and filmmaker Sharon Lockahart. Rutherford Chang’s We Buy White Album’s comes to Liverpool as part of LIMF. Artist collective, World Wilder Lab, attempt to give vegetation a voice with their project Organic Cinema from 25 July. Our engagement team have been busy preparing for the FLAG Film Festival, Connectivity exhibition and Veterans website launch which are all set to take place over the next few weeks. On our screens, Richard Linklater’s Boyhood gets a release after 12 years of filming. Following the real-life development of actor Ellar Coltrane from boy to man, it’s a cinematic first not to be missed. Keira Knightley and Mark Ruffalo team up to make sweet music in Begin Again while Philip Seymour Hoffman, in one of his final roles, plays a blue-collar man dealing with his stepson’s death in gritty drama God’s Pocket.

The 100 Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared (15)
Director Jim Mickle Starring Sam Shepard, Don Johnson, Michael C. Hall USA/France 2014 109 mins
Placid Texan Richard Dane (Hall, TV’s Dexter) kills a burglar in selfdefence. The burglar’s father, Russel (Shepard), is fresh out of jail, and unsettling scenes ensue as he menaces the Dane family. But when swaggering private eye-cum-pig farmer Jim Bob Luke (Johnson) rolls up, the story takes some tense twists and turns as he, Russel and Dane form an uneasy alliance to uncover corruption on a horrific scale.
Director Felix Herngren Starring Robert Gustafsson, Iwar Wiklander, Mia Skäringer, Alan Ford Sweden 2013 114 mins Swedish with English subtitles
This dark Scandinavian comedy is a succession of absurd chance encounters interlaced with bizarre, Zelig-like flashbacks. Allan Karlsson, played with subtle relish by the distinguished Gustafsson, bumbles his way from a nursing home into a seedy criminal netherworld, with a deliciously typecast Alan Ford (Snatch) as an enraged villain determined to recover the loot Karlsson has inadvertently appropriated.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (12A)
Finding Vivian Maier (12A)
3D / 2D Director John Carney Starring Mark Ruffalo, Keira Knightley, Catherine Keener, Hailee Steinfeld USA 2013 104 mins
In this uplifting tale from the director of Once, Ruffalo is Dan, a New York record-label boss who is flailing in both his personal and professional life, and Knightley plays Greta, a songwriter whose career has derailed since her partner hit the big time. When Dan hears her performance at an open-mic night, he suspects that she might just be the real deal. Resisting predictable plot turns, Carney keeps us guessing the trajectory of our two lost souls in this crowd-pleaser.
Director Matt Reeves Starring Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis USA 2014 130 mins
Directors John Maloof, Charlie Siskel USA 2013 84 mins
This sequel to 2011’s Rise of the Planet of the Apes finds the majestic Caesar (Serkis) leading his fellow simians against a band of human survivors of a devastating virus. The ensuing struggle will determine who ultimately rules the planet. Using the latest stop-motion technology, innovative director Matt Reeves (Cloverfield) guarantees that this new incarnation of the popular sci-fi thriller is as engrossing as ever.
This documentary is a tribute to Vivian Maier, an unsung genius of urban photography. The accidental discovery of her work by real-estate agent John Maloof resulted in her posthumous recognition as one of the finest street photographers of the 20th century. Paying homage to her work as well as exploring the strange twists and turns of her life, this film is dense with images, interviews and revelations, painting a fitting and moving portrait of the artist.

3D / 2D Director David Gordon Green Starring Nicolas Cage, Tye Sheridan, Gary Poulter USA 2013 117 mins
Director David Scheinmann Starring Brian Cox, Jack Smith, Natascha McElhone, Toby Stephens UK 2013 96 mins
Director James Gunn Starring Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Bradley Cooper USA 2014 TBC mins
Director Michel Gondry Starring Romain Duris, Audrey Tautou France/Belgium 2013 94 mins French with English subtitles
The titular Joe (Cage), an ex-con, runs a rough-neck crew thinning out forested land for dubious purposes. One day adolescent Gary (Sheridan, a revelation in Mud) turns up persuasively begging for work. Recognising Gary’s desperation, Joe becomes his mentor and ultimately protector from an aggressively drunk father (Poulter, a real-life drifter who died post-production). As was director David Gordon Green’s previous film Prince Avalanche, this is an atmospherically raw work about life at the moral and economic margins, but with tougher undertones.
Young Georgie (Smith) enjoys kicking a ball around the Manchester backstreets with his mates, and also doing the odd bit of thievery. When legendary ex-Manchester United manager Sir Matt Busby (Cox) hears about him, he elects to come out of retirement and coach the ragtag team to compete for the local Junior League Cup, facing many setbacks – and his own haunting memories of the 1958 Munich air disaster – along the way.
Marvel’s latest epic adventure boasts ultra-imaginative settings and a starry ensemble cast. After stealing a mysterious orb, adventurer Peter Quill (Pratt, Zero Dark Thirty, Parks and Recreation) goes on the run, and is forced into an uneasy truce with four supernatural misfits: Rocket (voiced by Cooper), a gun-toting raccoon; Groot (voiced by Vin Diesel), a treelike humanoid; the deadly Gamora (Saldana); and the vengeful Drax the Destroyer (David Bautista).
Sweet-natured inventor Colin (Duris, Populaire) falls in love with Chloé (Tautou, Amelie). When she develops a rare illness that involves a lily growing inside her lungs, he must resort to increasingly quirky inventions in order to provide for her. Based on a novel by Boris Vian, Gondry’s (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) film is a riot of visual puns, delightful animations and comedic sleights.

The Inbetweeners 2
God’s Pocket (15)
(Cert TBC) Directors Damon Beesley, Iain Morris Starring Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas, Blake Harrison UK 2014 TBC mins
After The Inbetweeners Movie proved the biggest-grossing (in every sense) UK film comedy ever, the temptation to make a sequel proved too much for the young actors who play TV’s ultimate bad lads. Once again Simon Bird, James Buckley, Joe Thomas and Blake Harrison travel abroad for their misadventures, although this time they’re letting Europe off lightly and opting instead to descend Down Under.
Director John Slattery Starring Philip Seymour Hoffman, Christina Hendricks, John Turturro USA 2014 89 mins
In his penultimate role before his death, Philip Seymour Hoffman plays corrupt meat trader Mickey. When his crazy stepson Leon is killed in a clapped-out local factory, Mickey’s life quickly unravels with little apparent chance of redemption. But Mickey’s wife Jeanie (Hendricks) suspects that Leon’s death was not what it seemed. Slattery draws edgy performances from all concerned in this claustrophobic, darkly humorous drama.

In a post-apocalyptic world, Eric (Pearce, Lawless) has his car stolen by three ruthless outlaws led by Henry (McNairy, Argo). The chase is then on for Eric to recover his car, a hunt that soon involves Henry’s injured brother Rey (Pattinson, Cosmopolis). David Michôd’s bleakly atmospheric film – which packs the same visceral punch as his Animal Kingdom – has all the atmospheric desperation of The Road and the Mad Max saga.

Fugitive Nazi Josef Mengele (Brendemühl) is living incognito in an Argentinian hotel run by a young couple whose 12-year-old daughter (the luminous Bado) is small for her age. The apparently kindly doctor offers to help her with injections of his ‘growth hormone’, unaware that an Israeli agent (Elena Roger) is on his trail. FACT and Liverpool Biennial present the first UK solo exhibition by Los Angeles-based artist Sharon Lockhart. Known for creating film and photography portraying often overlooked subjects in everyday life, Lockhart’s practice is underpinned by a commitment to immersing herself in new environments and building intimate relationships with people and places. Perhaps the most significant of these is her friendship with a young Polish girl Milena, with whom she has formed a continuing collaboration, three separate aspects of which will be shown at FACT. Supported by Kadist and neugerriemschneider. Liverpool Biennial is funded and supported by Arts Council England, Liverpool City Council, the European Union Regional Development Fund and Founding Supporter James Moores

The Garden by LEAF at FACT / FREE
Plants, bacteria and millions of other living entities surround us all the time and are vital to our well-being. However, their behaviour, and their very existence, constantly escapes human perception. What if we could see and hear what plants and microorganisms “talk about”?
Artists Close & Remote took visitors to our last exhibition on a journey to the Zone, an exciting art work developed in collaboration with The Mersey Forest and inspired by Bidston Moss in Birkenhead. Visit The Mersey Forest’s Illchester festival in August, there’ll be fun family activities and you can pick up a map of the Zone and explore it for yourself.
Artist Collective, World Wilder Lab explores how the flora and fauna of the café at FACT reacts to their surroundings. Through visuals generated from real time data, and displayed on digital screens, they aim to give vegetation a voice. This project was developed for FACT through workshops between the artists and Freehand Connects group in partnership with The Garden by LEAF. Cinema a century ago was a new, exciting and democratic form of entertainment, with live musical accompaniment. This special compilation from the BFI National Archive recreates the glorious miscellany of comedies, dramas, travelogues and newsreels that would have constituted a typical night out in 1914, including a comic short about a face-pulling competition, a sensational episode of The Perils of Pauline, scenes of Allied troops celebrating Christmas at the Front, and an early sighting of one of cinema’s greatest icons.

Veterans in Practice (FACT’s creative programme for ex-forces) have been busy producing some amazing creative projects which will première at this exciting event, including: the launch of ground-breaking website a new documentary about alternative therapies and a series of animations exploring the transition from military to civilian life.

My name is Brett, I’m ex forces and I have been attending the Veterans in Practice group for 18 months. I first heard of FACT through the Liverpool Veteran’s project who told me they were starting a photography project. I didn’t really get out of the house much so decided to give it a go, as it would keep me off the ale for at least one day a week. It was good to meet other ex-forces personnel and everyone got on great. 18 months later I’ve done numerous projects including animations, made a documentary about holistic therapies called Alternative Sceptics and I’ve interviewed veterans from the Battle of the Atlantic.
Services
The latest project I’m working on is a Veteran’s website. I personally think this is a good project as veterans will be able to access it to find out about housing, money, health and everything else ex-forces struggle with once back in civvy street. The website will also have an online space so veterans can exhibit their creative projects. So here I am today with a job, a flat, and a lot more confidence so thanks to everyone who has supported me on my journey.
One day I asked if I could do some voluntary work with FACT, then the role of Website Coordinator came about and I got the job! My role is to work within the team at FACT to develop the new veterans website and once its up and running Ill be coordinating and collating all the content. The role is sponsored by the Poppy Factory for 18 months. Having never worked in an office or with office equipment before it was a challenge to say the least, however I think I grasped the basics. I really do think I have brought some life to the hub especially with my cute smile and belting jokes.
