I feel so fortunate to have her in the role of the program coordinator, and I honestly don't know what we would do without her!"
Leanna W. Lewis, MSW, LCSW As the Administrative Director for PRIME-US at UC Berkeley-UCSF Joint Medical Program (JMP), Associate Director of the JMP, and Manager of Cultural Humility Initiatives for the Department for Community Health and Engagement, UCSF Benioff Children's Hospital Oakland, Leanna Lewis has a dynamic portfolio of excellence in service to the education mission at UCSF for faculty, colleagues, and learners. Leanna has provided leadership in piloting racial affinity group meetings for residents and fellows, and helping create a brave space for students. In her role with PRIME-US, Leanna is a scholar and trainer in "Cultural Humility,” an anti-racist praxis that commits to life-long learning about power and privilege, mitigates power differentials in our relationships, and holds institutions accountable to the community, using curriculum and academic-community partnership design, group teaching facilitation, and student mentorship and support. Nominators credit Leanna's professionalism, collaboration, and facilitation skills to push difficult conversations forward while maintaining a respectful and collegial atmosphere. A colleague noted, "For Leanna, the commitment to respect others confers the responsibility to warmly invite, encourage, and where needed, to sharply prod her colleagues and students to see beyond their current circumstances and to motivate them to respond with their highest selves.”
SON Education Technology and Innovation Hub Staff XinXin Huang, Kaori Keller, and Peter Wright The School of Nursing's Education Technology and Innovations Hub staff consistently demonstrates a commitment to excellence in supporting the School of Nursing curriculum delivery. The team's work involves incorporating technology to advance educational delivery, including expanded use of clinical simulation, skill-building in telehealth, and the development of devices that support patient self-management for health promotion and chronic disease management. The team had to rapidly expand services and support due to COVID-19 and its impact on the curriculum. The team collaborated with campus experts to develop a series of webinars and consulting services on topics that included technological knowledge, design techniques, and teaching techniques for online learning. The team accomplishes their work by creating a workspace that emphasizes formal training in education, instructional design, and education technology and leverages each team member's talents to respond quickly to faculty and learner needs. One nominator stated, "What I learned from the Hub Team allowed me to focus more on the quality of the content than on my worries about the delivery process for the content. I also knew that if something went wrong, that I could connect with the Hub Team and that they would respond within minutes with resources and options to fix my communication problems."
Exceptional Service Award in Medical Education Sara Clemons, MEd As manager for the Foundations 2 (F2) and Career Launch (CL) programs, Sara is an extraordinary contributor to the UCSF education mission and exemplifies each of the UCSF PRIDE values, especially as it pertains to the medical school curriculum and the education of UCSF third and fourth-year medical students. Sara was the critical administrative individual involved in designing and implementing the latter two phases of the Bridges Curriculum. Sara coordinates this complex set of programs that requires understanding program requirements, curriculum, and nuances of how the various programs fit together and assisting with critical communication to the entire education team. Sara's willingness to take on new roles, develop new processes, and increase efficiencies has been critical during the curriculum's launch and integration. Her work has been critical to the curriculum's evolution and success, especially with students. One nominee wrote that Sara "is a strong advocate for students and ensuring that the F2 and CL experiences are designed to fit students' needs. Whenever we face a decision or have a discussion, Sara is masterful at always circling back to the student perspective and having that be the guiding force for decision making."
