The City to City Barcelona FAD Award is staging its fifth edition. Five editions highlighting the social and civilizing role of cities, making visible exemplary initiatives undertaken in the different cities of the planet. The prize has the mission of uncovering and bringing to light any initiatives that may become models for other cities, both in regard to the innovative aspects of the procedures undertaken and to the effectiveness and efficiency of bringing about a clear improvement in the lives of people. Effectiveness and efficiency understood from both the point of view of energy sustainability and from a social and economic standpoint. The challenge is to build cities that are fairer and more respectful towards people and the resources used, at a time when speaking of cities means speaking of a place inhabited by more than half the world population. Through this foldout we seek to share the knowledge generated in the course of these five editions of the award. As a backdrop, a major dichotomy: on one hand, proposals that emerge to address emergency situations caused by armed conflict or those involving a lack of resources or extreme poverty; on the other, proposals by cities enjoying a more affluent reality. The difficulty of comparing them to each other is also the great asset of the prize. Because paradoxically, despite what is commonly held, often the true lessons of what it means to «make a city» in the 21st century emerge from communities immersed in conflict or in harsh situations. And there is a clear need that is increasingly making itself felt: the need expressed by the citizens, who are calling for a greater voice in the decisions that affect them.
