The
IUE Faculty of Fine Arts and Design, which was established in 2004, embodies five design disciplines working in harmony and integration with each other. Our Faculty contains five departments; Departments of Fashion and Textile Design, Industrial Design, Visual Communication Design, Architecture, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design. Our Faculty aims to train young designers who are creative, solution providers, environmentally conscious, socially responsible, and who target national and global design. Also, our programs shape the students into forming their own personal design identities as they help to develop design vision of the students. So far 750 students graduated from our Faculty. With the completion of Bologna process, the Faculty, in addition to basic design and arts courses offered to all departments in first year, offers options and elective courses starting from third year in its programs that are completely compatible with the international standards. The Faculty also offers an exquisite atmosphere to students where they can put their creativity into practice with continuously updated exhibitions, workshops and seminars intended to create awareness about current issues such as environmental consciousness, and sustainability, etc. Our students performed a great work throughout the year, some of which are included in this catalog. Also, in addition to full-time Turkish and foreign national faculty members with vast experience and outstanding educational background, there are part-time members who come from different disciplines, universities and cities to share their work experience with our students. The number of international cooperation with other universities is increasing day by day since we believe in globalization in terms of design disciplines. The increasing number of students from abroad contributes to the intercultural education of our Faculty. At the graduate level, we will continue education with our Master degree programmes in “Design Studies”, “Architecture” and “Yacht Design”, and this year with our new PhD programme in “Design Studies”, which are all open to students from different backgrounds aiming for practical or theoretical academic development. Besides the academic direction of our Faculty, outreach and commitment to local community is being enlarged with various collaborations through undergraduate and graduate students as well as the academic staff. I believe that you would be proud of being a student and a graduate of Faculty of Fine Arts and Design in Izmir University of Economics.

Validity of the areas of expertise within Visual Communication Design is enlarging day by day, so does the new practice possibilities. A graphic designer’s responsibility is to create visually and conceptually strong symbols for foundations and institutes. Meanwhile they have to state the target audience, investigate new communication channels, create new narrative languages and analyze the whole under a foundatitonal unity. Whereas, a multimedia designer locates his/her creativity to a global space by desigining through the web design, video, three dimensional visualisation and animation, sound and moving picture, within an interaction and information design. The works they have created should be visually affective whilst their message should reach their targets by the help of the context of the work, which should be effective in addressing masses throughly. We tried to share both the rules of visual communication design and its connection with creativity as much as possible through past four years that we spent together. Doubtless to say that every single work you create and every single success you have will improve our department and your own career. Our belief in each of you and your prospective success increase with the education you undertake in our department. We wish good luck to all designers and proud to support you!

them in one visible area on screen. I designed web pages for each department (Industrial Design, Fashion Design, Interior Architecture and Environmental Design, Architecture and Visual Communication Design), which included a description of each student’s work, visuals, videos, sketches, and personal information such as an e-mail address and a motto about their life and design. At the same time, I made stickers to be displayed in the graduation exhibition alongside each student’s work These codes enabled visitors to the exhibition to find out more information about a particular student and their work. Inspired by geometric shapes, I used to the departmental colours to create a minimal but pragmatic website.

storybook set within a universe called “Odron”, which was inspired by the fables In this universe, there are charming forests and a beautiful landscape, but there aren’t any humans except one who comes to Odron unconsciously and tries to find a way back home. In the story, the human meets animal characters from them, and learns new things about life and their own role in it. The story was designed Fontaine’s fables to a new target audience: that of young adults. Illustrated with my own monochrome drawings, I wanted the book to reflect despair and dilemma while feeding the imagination of readers.

local olive oil firm. The original brand is from wanted to export their products overseas but could not in accordance with rules defined by state that if a brand wishes to export, they must have an identity. I therefore started to work on positioning, possible artifacts and the design process to create an identity for the company. The name was rebranded as “Atria, which was the name given to that region of the Aegean sea during 7th Century B.C. Working from the shape of olive leaves, I designed a new typeface and used it throughout the identity, accompanied by hand-drawn illustrations that emphasized the organic quality of the product. As there are three types of olive oil offered by the company: Extra Virgin, were produced for each type, which made use of ceramic bottles to preserve its quality. waste is also one of the company’s priorities. Therefore they use leftover olive pomaces to make soap, for which I designed special edition boxes made from dead olive trees.

coffee shot that uses dibek coffee, which comes from the Ottoman period. I tried to pull dibek coffee from its oblivious position in the market and design a brand that can compete with other modern coffee chains (e.g. Starbucks). Choosing the name “Coffeed”, I gave the product a modern feel using an abstraction of a cup as part of the logo along with simple colours that reflected the product. These were then repeated throughout other parts of the identity including carry bag, wallpaper and umbrellas for out-door seating areas.

new signage and a new map to replace the existing inadequate way-finding system. Today, people want to spend less time taking public transportation. Therefore, they require signage and maps that are more distinguishable. Inspired by the designs of David Gibson, the signage was reshaped with respect to their locations in the metro, the colour of information signs was changed from turquoise to dark blue, and the font was changed from Bold/Semibold. Furthermore, as pictograms are universal in assisting communication, I included pictograms that are more comprehensible than existing ones. The end result was, in my view, a more intelligent, notable and standardized system of signage and maps for Izmir Metro. yerine daha koyu mavi bir renkle

was to design a cookbook for a target audience of young adults between the ages of 18 and 30 that live alone and who do not know much about cooking. With this in mind, the book focuses only on snack recipes made using a potato. Each of the recipes in the book was arranged according to the length of their preparation time so as to build skill level using simple ingredients.

The interference on the freedom of expression and press is getting more and more. In the Turkey section of human rights report by ministry of foreign affairs- USA among the problems concerning human rights, the interference on the freedom of expression and press is ranked as the second. The problem stated in the report is: “Government interference with freedom of speech and press: The penal code and anti-terror law retain multiple articles that restrict press freedom and public speech on politically and culturally sensitive topics. The arrest and prosecution intellectuals and political activists, coupled with condemnatory speeches by political leaders, had a chilling effect on freedom of expression. Politicians, including the prime minister, sued their critics for defamation at all levels. More

Display is a way of invitation. It is the place where the brand and the customer first meet. The more effective, extraordinary and evocative it is, the more it attracts the customer’s attention and pulls them inside. So displays should have a suitable language. According to my observations and surveys, I realized that customers are of the display instead of the articles. Thereby, they remember the atmosphere that creates the display more. After researching and writing my thesis about ‘Visual Merchandising’, I chose to apply
displays usually attract more attention than its products. I have chosen to create a display for ladies’ bags that could be used during the summer season. As ladies prefer to carry bags, which are light and chic in the summer, I used clouds in the background of the display to illustrate lightness. To highlight introduced floating futuristic shapes, which not only physically support the bags in the display, but also help reinforce the lightness of the products.

caricatures. I focused on a typology of the Fine Arts and Design department’s students. I picked unique people, symbolic people and I captured their photos and I studied them. I researched their life styles and clothing styles and I photographed them in order to draw their detailed sketches. I created 7 characters and I did many sketches about them. With my sketches clarified, I used a pen tablet for drawing digitally. I tried many painting techniques but none of them were as effective as Photoshop. From these caricatures, I made two life-size models, which I put into the entrance of the building for promoting so people could put their faces inside and have their photo taken. I took some photographs also, and I sent them via e-mail to the people who wanted them. The photographs showed
