Faena Art Goes Funktastique

This season Faena Art will host its annual fundraising gala where art and community convene in the Faena Forum for an unparalleled night of creative expression, art installations, top chefs, and musical performances.

Once a year, the rarest seeds bloom in Miami. Come, dance, and taste their fruits at the Garden of Earthly Delights, a night for lovers of exquisite cuisine, rollerdancing, cocktails, and world-class entertainment in celebration of art. Brought to you by Chase Sapphire, Faena Art has tapped its cadre of international and local artists who’ve showcased their work in the Faena District to create sitespecific installations throughout the Forum. Proceeds from the gathering will continue to support the artistic community and make art accessible to all through free, open-to-the-public programming.

Artistic duo assume vivid astro focus will transform the exhibit hall of the OMA-designed Faena Forum into a roller-disco experience with skating performances form the Griffin Brothers and a music set from DJ Amanda Portillo. Famed Argentine grill master Francis Mallmann will serve up woodfired gourmet bites with a finale of sweet treats from pastry chef Frédéric Monnet. An immersive installation from Cielo Tejido, an all-female artisan collective from Mexico, wraps the space in a spectacular textile of colorful hand-crocheted hexagons using a traditional weaving technique.

In the rose-marble amphitheater, artist Pilar Zeta will transform the space into a temple of sorts inspired by Hieronymus Bosch’s triptych painting. Chef Paul Qui will be onsite cooking up his Filipino-inflected fare from a fresh-caught tuna carving, seafood towers to tom kha rice with trumpet mushrooms. And musician Sabina Sciubba will kick off the evening with an hour-long performance. Artists Cornelius Tulloch and Kelly Breez , who have previously had immersive exhibitions in the Faena Art Project Room, will adorn the space with their captivating and

unique visual view on Florida’s landscape, personality, and humor. “We want to continue to expand and grow these unprecedented collaborations and this annual happening plays a critical role in allowing us to do so,” said Alan Faena . The evening calls for a Funktastique dress code inspired by Bosch’s “Garden of Earthly Delights,” with a prize awarded to the best dressed of the night. “There is so much imagination in our community,” noted Faena “We’re so proud to be a platform for such outstanding creativity.”

7:00PM FAENA FORUM MIAMI BEACH TICKETS AVAILABLE AT WWW.FAENAART.ORG

Swap heels for wheels at this funktastique immersive roller-skating rink fundraiser, featuring artistic interventions, extraordinary live entertainment, exquisite cuisine, and more at Faena Forum. Immerse yourself in a kaleidoscopic evening of unprecedented artistic collaborations:

ZETA is an Argentinianborn artist currently based in Mexico City. Zeta’s artistic expression encompasses immersive installations that transport viewers to new realms of perception and contemplation. Her works seamlessly blend elements of philosophy, mathematics, symbolism, mysticism, and surrealism, while embracing the aesthetics of postmodern architecture and the use of color and shapes as a primordial language.

assume vivid astro focus is a collective duo formed in New York City in 2001 by Eli Sudbrack and Christophe Hamaide-Pierson. Avaf fuses drawing, sculpture, video, and performance into carnavalesque installations in which cultural codes float freely. Personal expression and a lust for life feature prominently in projects simultaneously rooted in the politics of free speech, civil rights, and the dissolution of rigid classifications of class, gender, and national identity.

MIRANDA MAKAROFF was born in Spain to an Argentine father and Spanish mother, both of whom were artists, musicians, and fashion designers. This naturally artistic milieu allowed little Miranda the freedom to play and investigate various media, leading her to discover her own language; one where all the arts could coexist together. A lexicon built on her multihyphenate interests as a Dj, painter, sculptor, designer, and actress.

CIELO TEJIDO is the result of the vision and perseverance of two exceptional women, mother and daughter, Paloma and Lorena Ron. What began as a way to heal the heart has evolved into a community of over 200 women passionate about the art of weaving. Cielo Tejido has grown and become a powerful artistic and communal expression that transcends borders and enriches our lives and that of our society.

PILAR

KELLY BREEZ is a BFA graduate from the New World School of the Arts. She is a multi- disciplinary artist who lives and works in Miami. She weaves a sharp eye for subtle humor into her work, acting like a mirror to the absurdities of life. With an uncanny attention to detail and the likeness to a sponge, Breez naturally absorbs the nuances of the unpredictable tropical wasteland she calls home.

CORNELIUS TULLOCH is a Miamibased interdisciplinary artist and designer. With work transcending the barriers of photography, fine art, and architecture, Cornelius focuses on how creative mediums can be combined to tell powerful stories. Whether it is through photography or painting, cinematic moments and spatial complexity are depicted in his work. Lighting and color become characters in his art.

AMANDA PORTILLO is a Madrid native, who also lived in Barcelona, and has always rubbed shoulders with the top artists, actors and designers of the moment. Her distinctive creative universe has led to collaborations with María Escoté and Nike. She has DJed at the most exclusive events, co-founded the fashion label ASIF Clothing with the Javis, served as the creative image for Cha Chá The Club, designed the cover for ARON’s latest single, and, now, is part of the latest Netflix reality show ‘First Class’ with her friends.

SABINA SCIUBBA is a singer, composer, performance artist and actress. She became known as the lead singer for the Grammynominated electronica band, Brazilian Girls. She is also a visual artist. She has a solo career, and also worked as an actress, appearing in a recurring role on the FX series Baskets, beginning in 2016. Sciubba has composed the scores for feature films and commercials.

MARK YOUR CALENDAR

Faena Theater ’s summer events calendar is packed with world-class entertainment from comedy legends and notable jazz musicians to cabaret starlets.

Comedy powerhouse Bill Bellamy kicked off Faena Theater ’s new stand-up comedy series curated by Emmy and Grammy-nominated TV-film-record producer and talent manager, Barry Katz, and stand-up comedian, actress, and producer Anya Zova. “The idea to start a comedy series came to me when Marvelous Mrs. Maisel was filming in the Faena Theater,” said Brian Forti, Executive Producer and Director of Creative Entertainment at Faena Theater. “Watching comedy in such a luxurious setting with gourmet cuisine is a big departure from most improv venues. We want to be the premier five-star comedy room in the United States.” The Masters of Comedy series takes place once a month throughout the year with upcoming performances from Adam Ray (April 24), Jamie Kennedy (May 29) and Brad Williams (June 26) and more through November.

The summer jazz series is poised for a tremendous finale with the Shelly Berg Trio (May 8) and Michael Mayo (June 19) closing out the series on a high note. Shelly Berg, a renowned pianist and dean of the Frost School of Music, will play with bassist Carlos Del Puerto and Max Marsillo on drums to present their latest album, “Alegria.” Twenty-eight-year-old

jazz vocalist and composer Michael Mayo, whose talent has earned him performances at the White House, the Kennedy Center and Renée Fleming’s American Voices Festival, will be presenting songs from his debut solo album, “Bones.”

Extended through summer due to popular demand, ASCENSION –Allura Cabaret , is emceed by soulful siren Rocky Lanes. The electrifying revue features a new ensemble who take audiences on an immersive ride through parallel universes where worldrenowned choreographers, singers, dancers, musicians, and digital artists meld their mastery and mystique into one powerful visionary force. “This show moves people because good music always hits the soul,” said Lanes.

In April, Ute Lemper performed the theatrical show Rendezvous with Marlene, an homage to Marlene Dietrich based on a three-hour phone call and exchange in Paris between Lemper and Dietrich back in 1988. Renowned for her mesmerizing performances, Lemper channels the spirit of the iconic diva, weaving together music, anecdotes, and personal reflections to create an unforgettable experience. “The performance received such positive acclaim we will be bringing it back for an extended run at the beginning of next year,” said Forti.

Faena’s spa has added a cold plunge pool to its long list of healing modalities. “Cryotherapy not only cools you down but also invigorates your body and mind,” said Spa Director Agustina Caminos. “Plus, it has anti-inflammatory properties to soothe sun-kissed skin, making it a must-have for post-beach pampering.” Other benefits include chronic pain relief, improved muscle recovery, boosted circulation, and mood enhancement triggered by the release of endorphins and other feel-good hormones.

Guests can book the new 60or 90-minute Cryo Scrub Ritual in the private Scrub Room. The experience starts with a personalized cleansing ritual on a rose quartzinfused marble slab using a fullbody dry brush followed by a green tea and mint scrub to remove impurities from the skin. Next, is a visit to the cedar sauna to amplify purification. “After the sauna, guests dip into the cold plunge for as long as they can handle,” said Caminos. The ritual concludes with a calming body massage using quinoa balm to boost hydration, increase collagen production and improve skin elasticity.

Cool Down with Cryotherapy

As the mercury rises this summer, head to Tierra Santa Healing House to embrace the chill of cryotherapy for a refreshing summer boost.

Quinoa Bliss

“This summer, we’ve added a new treatment to the spa menu using quinoa,” said Agustina Caminos, the spa director at Tierra Santa Healing House This 90-minute treatment combines a massage using dry brushing and lymphatic drainage, as well as remodeling techniques using purified quinoa oil drops to boost hydration, increase collagen production and prevent loss of skin elasticity. “It’s the perfect cure for dehydrated summer skin as it adds moisture and nutrition, leaving the skin softer and healthier,” she added. The massage can be paired with a vitamin-infused IV drip before or after the treatment for maximum hydration and boost the body’s energy levels to fight heat fatigue.

A Six-Seat Secret

Miami is becoming an epicenter for standout omakase experiences known for high-quality ingredients, creativity, and a stylish ambiance. Leading the pack is Faena’s El Secreto, a six-seat speakeasy with a Japanese menu that changes seasonally.

“At El Secreto we do things a little differently,” said chef Erik Melendez, who engages with guests as he prepares 16 elaborate dishes at the slick onyx bar. “We skew more towards a kaiseki dining experience with small tapa-style seasonal plates featuring fruits and vegetables paired with fish.”

One course you might catch on the summer menu is dashi, or fish broth. “A lot of restaurants will serve miso soup, while at El Secreto, my riff on dashi features jamón ibérico, small cubes of foie gras and black truffles. It’s an umami bomb,” he said.

Guests are often surprised to find fresh catch they’ve never heard of on the menu, which is flown-in straight from Japan. “We source uzuki (Japanese sea bass), aji (horse mackerel), octopus and of course, Japanese uni, or sea urchin,” explained Melendez. “Several of our dishes feature very complex recipes with cooked fish— we don’t just focus on nigiri.”

Sunday Seafood Brunch

A city surrounded by sea, Miami is known for its line-caught catch, which chef Paul Qui sources from local purveyors. To taste the finest fruits of the sea, head to Pao for a Bossa Nova Sunday brunch.

Pao’s innovative take on modern Asian cuisine, coupled with its sophisticated ambiance and commitment to culinary artistry, cements its reputation as a mustvisit destination for food enthusiasts. The restaurant’s seafood brunch set to the rhythms of live Bossa Nova entertainment offers a tantalizing array of seafood delights, including

delicacies from the sushi bar, raw bar, and dim sum selections. The brunch experience extends beyond seafood with options like crab torta, smoked short rib hash and caviar additions. To round out the symphony of flavors, Pao offers a dessert spread that satisfies even the most discerning sweet tooth.

Faena’s Late Night Resident music program will be headlined by Trinidad-born artist, KEBA, who will make her highly anticipated return to the Living Room stage this May with three weeks of performances backed up by the Black Hat Band with stunning performances from burlesque siren Elena Lee and her ensemble. KEBA’s soul-flavored songs are anthems about becoming a self-made woman in America. Her lyrics combine raw vulnerability with a cultural exploration of love, femininity and identity as a first-generation

Artists in Residence

Summer is sizzling in the Living Room with a crop of talented artists putting their singular stamp on Faena’s curated music lineup.

immigrant and millennial, while her music is a sensual fusion of pop, R&B and Caribbean soul, accented with melodic basslines, exotic rhythms and theatrical climaxes.

Liset Alea, from the notable French band Nouvelle Vague, will imbue summer evenings with her magnetic sensuality and emotive voice that flows over any genre of musical arrangements. Born in Cuba, raised in Miami, and living in Europe for the past 20 years, Alea is a culture-fluid multi-instrumentalist, skipping hypnotically between languages

from English to French to Spanish while she softly plays guitar. She’s been likened to a breathy, minimalist, mellowed out Astrud Gilberto on acoustic guitar.

The Funky Suspects will join other long-established weekly residencies this summer including Mi Dulce Son, American Gypsy, the French Horn Collective and crooner Louis Amanti, bringing their funky disco soul take on classics every Thursday evening. DJ sets from Richie Hell, Diego Ciaramella, Corrado Rizza, and others, complement the live performances.

The Cathedral

The fruits of the earth shine through in The Cathedral, a pre-prohibition cocktail recipe from the heart of Havana, Cuba. Giffard’s Abricot Du Roussillon provides a beautifully nuanced mix of fresh apricot, citrus flavors, and a touch of nuttiness and allspice, which plays off the rich brown sugar and molasses notes of Havana Club rum. The summer elixir is brightened with fresh-press lime juice, while depth is added with orange bitters, fee foam, and, during happy hour, it’s presented with an Instagramworthy smoke bubble

A Journey Through Flames

“Miami’s sizzling-hot Argentine grill” is what Forbes Travel Guide calls Los Fuegos, Faena Miami Beach’s signature restaurant from top chef Francis Mallmann.

At Los Fuegos , dining is an experience that transcends mere sustenance. It’s a journey through flames, rooted in Mallmann’s deepseated passion for live-fire cooking. Los Fuegos stands as a vibrant testament to the rich heritage of Argentine cuisine, particularly the time-honored tradition of the asado, or wood-fired barbecue.

In a nod to the rising trend of vegetarianism, Mallmann recently published his plant-based cookbook, “Green Fire.” A selection of dishes inspired by his recipes can be found on the menu including wood-fired

artichokes with sesame yogurt; butternut squash drizzled with chermoula sauce and pistachio crumble; beets carpaccio cooked in embers; wild mushrooms with roasted garlic cream and egg yolk; and crispy brussel sprouts with pecorino cheese and anchovies.

For the carnivores and pescatarians, there’s plenty to make your mouth water—namely the wood-oven empanadas bursting with flavor, succulent skirt steak or prime rib-eye a la parrilla. An array of local fresh options cooked over an open flame

include whole Mediterranean branzino with fennel and lemon, as well as the snapper ceviche bathed in lime leche de tigre with sweet potato purée.

Every Sunday, Los Fuegos hosts an authentic asado where guests can share a wood-fired mixed parrillada piled high with skirt steak, prime ribeye steak, chorizo, morcilla, branzino, snapper, prawns, domino potatoes and roasted sweet potatoes. Live music and a laidback atmosphere make Los Fuegos the perfect way to spend a sunny afternoon with family and friends.

Programming Highlights

Rose is about experiencing the most transformative cultural events. Here is a snapshot of the caliber and breadth of the world-class talent and programming we curate and produce for our members.

We held our inaugural Faena Rose Royal Rumble with Anthony “The Mooch” Scaramucci and Kevin “Mr. Wonderful” O’Leary. For an intense 60 minutes, Rose members asked them questions on topics covering entrepreneurship, geopolitics, cryptocurrency, TikTok, and the economy in an unrestricted, no-holds-barred Q&A session where anything went! Nothing was off-limits! They were each given up to 60 seconds to respond, taking full advantage of the unique format to showcase not only their sharp tongues and dynamic personalities but also their ability to roll with the punches, even when it comes to poking fun at themselves. The two were introduced to the crowd of members by Faena Rose’s President, Pablo De Ritis, who played both emcee and referee. As the spotlight shone on the stage, each fighter made a grand entrance, adorned in custom boxing robes and monogrammed

gloves, accompanied by their chosen theme songs. The Mooch, striding confidently, chose “Eye of The Tiger,” while Mr. Wonderful strutted to the beat of his original “Mr. Wonderful Theme Song.” The audience voted The Mooch as the winner, who will return to defend his title this fall. Keep an eye out for the next exciting match-up!

Faena Rose is partnered with Summit Series for the renowned Summit At Sea , setting sail from Miami on Richard Branson’s Virgin Voyages, and Montreux Jazz Festival Miami for their inaugural festival featuring Jon Batiste

During the festival, the extraordinary Jon Batiste, distinguished Grammy and Academy Award-winning artist, took time out for an intimate conversation and Q&A with Rose members. This rare encounter offered deep insights into Jon’s illustrious musical journey, revealing the rich stories and profound experiences that inspire

his songs and define his unique sound. The session was further enlivened by an impromptu performance that sparked cheers and moved many to tears of joy.

In partnership with Miami Country Day School, Rose hosted several speakers including Dr. Aliza Pressman , renowned developmental psychologist & host of “Raising Good Humans,” Nemo Zhou Woman Chess Grandmaster, and Heman Bekele , America’s Top Young Scientist of 2023.

Chef Massimo Bottura returned to Faena during the South Beach Wine and Food Festival to hold a conversation about his just released book “Slow Food, Fast Cars: Casa Maria Luigia - Stories and Recipes.”

Rose Members gave back to the community by rallying together to volunteer for Clean Miami Beach , Food Rescue US South Florida and have helped support Hassan Tibwa and Sami al-Gada , two Sudanese engineering college students who helped save over 60 lives during the outbreak of the Sudan Civil War.

A conversation with Michael Saylor, tech visionary, Bitcoin evangelist, and one of the most influential figures in cryptocurrency returned for a conversation about the current and future state of Bitcoin.

Magnus Resch , one of the world’s leading art market experts, explained the core principles of the art market and discussed his new book ‘How to Collect Art’. Gonzo journalist, Bianca Bosker, infiltrated the art world for her new book ‘Get the Picture,’ and shared with members how she explored the dynamics of cultural capital, privilege, and gatekeeping in New York’s contemporary art scene.

The remarkable David Kwong, a master of magic and a New York Times crossword puzzle constructor dazzled Rose members for a night of mind games and magic.

Members hit the town with a private viewing of award winning “The Museum Plays” by Miami New Drama held at the Rubell Museum, studio visits with Miami artists Emmett Moore and Anastasia Samoylova , and joined the padel craze with lessons at Reserve Padel and Ultra Padel

The Faena Questionnaire: Ute Lemper

Our rendition of the Proust Questionnaire is our unique take on the famous parlor game that gained popularity, although it was not originally created, by Marcel Proust, the renowned French essayist and novelist. Proust held the belief that by responding to these questions, individuals unveil their genuine essence.

Our beloved Ute has made her mark on the stage, in films, in concert, and as a recording artist. She has been universally praised for her interpretations of Berlin cabaret songs, French chanson, the works of Kurt Weill and Berthold Brecht and the Chansons of Marlene Dietrich, Edith Piaf, Jacques Brel, Léo Ferré, Jacques Prevert, Nino

Rota, Astor Piazzolla many others and her own compositions, as well as her portrayals in musicals and plays on Broadway, in Paris, Berlin and in London’s West End. This season, Faena Theater had the immense honor of hosting her for the performance of her worldwide tour, Rendezvous with Marlene, which is her homage to

Marlene Dietrich and recounts her true story through word and music. The amazing show is based on a three-hour phone call and exchange between Marlene Dietrich and Ute Lemper in 1988 in Paris, over 30 years ago. After receiving the French Molière Award for her performance in Cabaret in Paris, Ute sent a postcard to Marlene,

who had resided at 12 Avenue de Montaigne since 1979, essentially apologizing for all the media attention comparing her to Marlene Dietrich. At that time, Ute was just beginning her career in theater and music, while Marlene looked back on a long, fulfilling life of films, music, remarkable collaborations, love stories, and stardom.

FAENA CULTURE

What is your idea of perfect happiness?

As Gandhi said, when what you think, feel, say and do are in harmony, you can be happy.

What is your greatest extravagance?

Sipping my daily morning coffee on my Penthouse Terrace in Manhattan.

Which living person do you most despise?

A person of arrogance, righteousness, a traitor, a lousy liar, coward, and a person that shows no integrity or back bone. There are too many in our world and some in my private life, far too close to me. I also despise people who do anything for money. Our market is built on such desire for profit. Our food is poisoned for mass production, our education and healthcare systems are unethical.

What is the trait you most deplore in yourself? Self-doubt.

What or who is the greatest love of your life?

My 4 children. I love them unconditionally, also the adult ones. I am forever connected to their souls. And MUSIC.

When and where were you happiest?

With my family at home or on a big and beautiful stage performing with a perfect voice that lets me explore musical interpretation at its best and fearlessly.

What is your favorite occupation?

Being creative, producing and writing music. Inventing projects. Walking around the Reservoir in Central Park (please go to my YouTube channel called utelempersmusic and watch my video ‘AT THE RESERVOIR’ to get an idea). Taking care of my family. Performing. Cooking.

What do you consider the most overrated virtue?

Winning.

On what occasion do you lie? To keep peace and not to hurt someone.

What do you dislike most about your appearance? The signs of age are sometimes surprising and bothersome. But they reflect life.

Which talent would you most like to have?

Playing piano like a virtuoso. Which living person do you most admire?

The doctors and nurses that care endlessly for us.

What is the trait you most deplore in others?

People who exploit authority in disrespectful, manipulative manner for selfish purpose. Vanity, arrogance, fake and evil.

What is your favorite journey?

My journey to peace and gratefulness

Which words or phrases do you most overuse?

What is your greatest regret?

Not having been able to be closer to my mother. Not understanding her and not being understood by her is a great regret, especially since her death.

What is your current state of mind?

Peaceful, clear, protecting myself, not surrendering to challenge, always standing up for myself. Giving love and feeling deeply connected to the universe.

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Living without backpain, hip pain, arthritis, and fixing my bad vision.

Who is your favorite hero of fiction?

Superman.

If you could change one thing about your family, what would it be?

Having everyone in New York, closer to each other, not spread around the world.

What do you consider your greatest achievement?

My four children and my very long-lasting career. My creative journey and perseverance.

What is it that you most dislike?

The process of leaving again to be on tour and breaking it to my kids.

If you could choose what to come back as, what would it be?

As myself.

What is your most treasured possession?

An old tweezer from my mother she gave me in 1980, it still works better than any new one for plucking eyebrows.

What do you regard as the lowest depth of misery?

A miserable marriage, depending on a disrespectful person, having to deal with ignorant people. Financial dependency and of course illness.

Where would you like to live?

I love New York, but Paris would be nice for a while, Florida in springtime. But I work everywhere in the world, so I get to be in all the wonderful places and still love home the most.

What is your most marked characteristic? Focus, strength, transparency, artistic integrity, and depth.

What do you most value in your friends? Warmth, simplicity, and honesty.

Who are your favorite writers? Paulo Coelho, Herman Hesse, Paul Celan, Pablo Neruda, and Mary Oliver

Who are your heroes in real life?

The peace corps, the doctors, the nurses, some teachers, the aid workers, the mothers who want to make the world better for the future generations.

What is your greatest fear?

An entirely digital consciousness, an absence of simple contact and conversations, an existence that can’t be fulfilled without digital devices.

What is your motto?

Stay truthful, fight for your rights, be simple and elegant. Back to the first question: Let what you feel, think, say, do and work be in harmony.
