A Garden of Earthly Delights

On May 10th, Faena Art hosted its Annual Art Gala. A night where art and community convened in the Faena Forum for the “Garden of Earthly Delights,” an evening of creative expression, art installations, top chefs, and musical performances.

More than 500 people donned in ‘Funktastique’ attire attended the fundraising gala whose proceeds support the local and international artistic community through free and open to the public annual programming in the Faena District . “There is so much imagination in our community,” noted Alan Faena “We’re so proud to be a platform for such outstanding creativity.”

A cadre of world-class artists were tapped to create unique site-specific installations in the Faena Forum. The night started off with a fantastic photo moment at a backdrop by artist Miranda Makaroff and guests were

ushered into the Faena Forum to immerse themselves in works by assume vivid astro focus (avaf), Pilar Zeta, Cornelius Tulloch, Kelly Breez and Cielo Tejido, an all-female artisan collective from Mexico who draped the walls in colorful hand-crocheted hexagons woven together using traditional techniques. The main hall was transformed into a roller dancing rink by the artistic collective avaf, offering guests a lively roller-disco experience. Skating performances by the Griffin Brothers encouraged everyone to join in on the dance floor. Musical guests kept the beat going all night including DJ Tony Kurtz, Sabina Sciubba

from the Grammy-nominated electronica band Brazilian Girls with percussionist Gisela, and DJ Amanda Portillo. Famed Argentine grill master Francis Mallmann served up wood-fired gourmet bites, while chef Paul Qui prepared sashimi, handrolls and donburi bowls from a 500-pound blue tuna. Sweet treats in the remarkable food installation were presented by pastry chef Frédéric Monnet.

Over the weekend on May 11th and May 12th, Faena Art invited the local community to strap on skates and spend the afternoon roller-dancing on avaf’s vibrant rink installation to a roster of local DJ talent curated

by production duo Paperwater. The free, public activation is part of Faena Art ’s way of engaging and celebrating the diverse communities of South Florida.

Faena Art is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization that commissions, produces, and houses cross-disciplinary artistic experiences.

The Most Beautiful of the Illusions

In this first 20th anniversary of the opening of Faena Buenos Aires, the Alchemist, multidisciplinary artist and filmmaker, tells us about

that dreamlike landscape in distant lands where magic was born.

In a world where everything is illusion, where the individual imagination faces dreams that range from unspeakable hells to paradisiacal realms, there are those who give in to nightmares, which they call crises. Others seek for the most beautiful illusion. Most human beings aspire to find ‘happiness’: the Alchemists embodied it in the ‘philosopher’s stone’; Plato saw it in the world of ‘pure ideas’; the Zen Buddhists called it ‘enlightenment’; the Surrealists revered it as amour fou —‘wild love’. Every religion, every political doctrine, and even all of the sciences, pursue the most beautiful illusion. And of all the arts, it is the art of hospitality that has tried to present it to us.

In Christianity, ever since Mary and Joseph were denied a room at the inn and had to give birth to Jesus in a manger, the act of providing shelter for the traveler has been a sacred duty. But having become merely a commercial activity —and to say commercial is to say having forgotten the most beautiful illusion— most hotels do not step out of the norm: they provide indifferent services, harmful products, constraints of all kinds, nurturing the presumed poor taste of the traveler, and immersing guests in a childish environment. Then suddenly, from among the hoards of money-makers, like a fish swimming upstream, there emerges an idealist who aspires to build a hotel that is this most beautiful of illusions. I am talking about Alan

Faena . This man, always dressed in white, feeling in the depths of his heart that an approximation was not the thing itself, took the leap beyond the limits of the industry. And with absolute honesty succeeded in his quest to provide the wandering traveler with a shelter where the best in himself could see the light... And that’s what happened to me… weary from so much traveling, feeling like a citizen of a world I found painful —a world of illusion without beauty— barely had I set foot in Faena Buenos Aires than my stress vanished, as if by magic. Emerging as it does from the past, while becoming a space of the future, the building immediately offered me the illusion of the most beautiful of homes...

Faena Buenos Aires is not a hotel in the strict sense of the term, but an experience that lifts us up towards beauty the moment we set foot in its spectacular, theatrical, artistically refined space. Dwelling there for a time immerses us in a clearly intelligent world, created in the heart of Buenos Aires, where styles from both classical and modern periods intermingle — much like they do in the rest of the city— evidence of a culture that is at once traditional and ultramodern, historical and timeless.

Far removed from the impersonal luxury of international hotels, Faena Buenos Aires stands out for its personality, its aura, its perfection writ large and in the smallest of details. It is like a living

entity: a huge, affectionate animal and at the same time a delicate master.

Walking through the corridors illuminated with the utmost sensitivity, entering the bedroom where every corner, bedspread, object, piece of furniture, light fixture, and curtain made me feel that the most beautiful illusion had been consolidated in one space, as close to my ideal home as I could imagine — where I felt both protected and exalted— totally removed from the world of ugly illusions.

In Kafka’s novel The Castle, the traveler, however hard he looks, never finds the castle’s mysterious owner. He is a creator who does not dwell in his work. On the contrary, at Faena Buenos Aires, the creator who has given his name to his unique territory, actually lives within its walls, his presence lending it the alchemical harmony of well-being and extreme refinement, where luxury is transformed into the sweetness of living.

My friend Alan’s ambition is a generous one. Seeking the most beautiful illusion, he has built an expanding universe, overcoming the perpetual impermanence of the world with his ceaseless creation, alive with art and beauty, without ever losing his deep sense of hospitality, his elegance and courtesy, authentic through and through —qualities all the more precious in a world that is ever more losing reverence for the most beautiful illusions.

An Icon Turns 20

Faena Buenos Aires, an epitome of luxury and cultural fusion, marks its 20th anniversary as a testament to Alan Faena’s visionary entrepreneurship and his ability to create transformative spaces that serve as cultural centers and community axes in cities around the world.

The inception of Faena’s grand vision can be traced back to his home and rose garden in Punta del Este, Uruguay, affectionately nicknamed ‘ Tierra Santa ,’ or sacred ground. “ Tierra Santa was a special place, a curative place, a place of energy and hope, of freedom and healing,” said Faena . Spending two years cultivating his rose garden gave him the time and inspiration to dream up new realties. He wanted to create a place that would offer the same peace, refuge and growth that Tierra Santa had given him.

“To invite people into a version of my home, my living room, my garden, on a scale that would accommodate them, I realized that this building would have to be a hotel. No ordinary hotel, of course— this would be a feast, a dance, a

cultural center, a revolution of ideas and images, a place of profound betterment,” said Faena . Drawing from mythic and historical origins, Faena’s notion of a hotel was more connected to ancient temples and castles, where travelers gathered for protection, food, company, song, performance, enlightenment, and the sharing of stories. Faena envisaged a hotel that would serve as a living, breathing work of art that encompassed all his passions: design, culture, technology, art, architecture, food, dance, music, and meaning. “The only capital I had was my heart and freedom of mind.”

Faena. In the late 1990s, Faena set his eyes on the derelict docklands of Puerto Madero in Buenos Aires where El Porteño, an abandoned turn-of-the-century grain storage

facility hewn from durable brick, still stood among the wasteland.

With the support of investors

Chris Burch, Len Blavatnik, Austin Hearst, and Robert Burch, Faena was able to acquire the building and his vision began to take shape. “Len especially responded to my project of community building and urban renewal.” Faena also convinced acclaimed designer Philippe Starck to collaborate on the project. “I told Philippe, we cannot make New York in Buenos Aires. We need to convey the identity of this city. We need to bring back the old, romantic Buenos Aires of yore, its Belle Époque.” Faena shunned the contemporary white-box aesthetic that pervaded luxury hotels of the day who turned their backs on local customs and culture in an attempt

to appear global and cosmopolitan. “I wanted to let the past invade the future—to marry these opposites in harmony,” he explained.

The project was a success from the very first day, with all eighty-four resident units sold before construction was even finished. Faena Buenos Aires went on to become a magnet for international celebrities, rock stars, artists, thinkers, and politicians. It received an onslaught of raves and awards, cementing its place as a cultural and social landmark.

Twenty years later, the hotel continues to serve as a vibrant cultural and social hub, embodying the spirit of Buenos Aires and Faena’s unwavering commitment to creating transformative spaces defined by artistic innovation and beauty.

Carmen, The Cabaret

PREMIERING THIS SEPTEMBER

In a bold and original move, Faena Theater is set to present a formidable cabaret rendition of Georges Bizet’s 19th-century opera “Carmen,” reimagined by the creative minds at Quixotic, an award-winning performance art collective.

“We are honored and excited to be creating an immersive cabaret version of the classic and timeless story of Carmen,” said Anthony Magliano, founder and executive creative director of Quixotic.

Premiered in 1875, “Carmen” is a tale of passion and tragedy set in Spain. It follows the fiery and free-spirited gypsy Carmen and her explosive love affair with soldier Don José, one wrought with jealousy and

betrayal. Renowned for its vibrant music and dramatic storyline, the original opera unfolds in four acts featuring iconic pieces like “Habanera” and the “Toreador Song.” Quixotic in collaboration with Faena Live, will breathe new life and ideas into the story of Carmen, marrying the fierce passion of flamenco with fire artistry, live music, breathtaking visuals, and mixed styles of contemporary dance

forms. “This show is a celebration of the past and present, brought to life in a spectacular, immersive performance,” added Magliano. The music for this latest production of “Carmen” is an eclectic modern mix of flamenco and pop with a dash of hip-hop. “It’s a melting pot of new and classic music that weaves together the story of Carmen in a fresh way,” noted Shane Both, Quixotic’s musical director. “We are

ecstatic to introduce two amazing singers, Bita, a vocalist and songwriter from Granada, Spain, and Mimi Barber from Ibiza, whose styles juxtapose beautifully.” Also joining the cast is brilliant flamenco guitarist Rodrigo Valdez and one of Miami’s top percussionists, Otto Santana Selis. “As with every production at Faena, we strive to bring multiple styles of music together to create something exciting for everyone,” said Both.

Tierra Santa recently launched the Cryo Scrub Ritual, a unique contrast therapy treatment. It starts in the private scrub room with a personalized cleansing on a rose quartz-infused marble slab, followed by a full-body dry brush and a green tea and mint scrub to purify the skin. The ritual then moves to the dry sauna before diving into a cold plunge bath to enhance focus, reduce inflammation, and strengthen the immune system. It concludes with a calming body massage using quinoa balm to boost hydration, skin elasticity, and collagen production.

“Contrast therapy, alternating between hot and cold temperatures, improves circulation and muscle recovery by causing vasodilation and vasoconstriction,” said Agustina Caminos, the spa director at Tierra Santa . “This process aids the lymphatic system by helping move stagnant fluid and support the healing of damaged tissue.”

To boost rehydration further,

Beat the Heat

the spa launched a Longevity Lounge with a wide range of IV drips to deliver vitamins, minerals, and amino acids directly into the body, nourishing it at a cellular level. “Intravenous vitamin therapy is the quickest way to restore optimum hydration and stimulate the immune system,” Caminos said.

For the ultimate glow, guests can book the HyperCustomized Facial, which uses advanced skincare products rich in antioxidants, vitamins, and natural ingredients to replenish the skin. This 60- or 90-minute treatment focuses on areas prone to elasticity loss, delivering a lifting and tightening massage to firm the jawline, cheeks, and eyebrows. “The result is firmer skin with more volume, reduced fine lines and improved texture.”

During August and September, the spa is offering an array of discounted treatments for Miami Spa Months. “Om Beauty!” combines a group yoga class followed by a hydrating hair

mask, soothing scalp massage, and a blow-out at Rossano Ferretti. For a quick refresh, the Liquid Gold Quick Drip offers 30 minutes of IV Therapy in the Longevity Lounge, coupled with LED therapy to hydrate and reduce wrinkles, while the Sacred Summer Scrub is a 60-minute purification ritual combining contrast therapy and a cacao and mint scrub. Learn the Delicate Craft of Sushi-making

Promising a summer of delicious discovery, El Secreto’s chef Erik Melendez is launching an interactive twoand-a-half-hour sushi-making class this summer.

This new experience invites guests to delve into the artistry of sushi, crafting nigiri, handrolls, and sushi rolls under his expert guidance. “The hands-on experience will help guests gain confidence in sushi preparation and enhance their culinary skills,” said Melendez. The class kicks off with a warm welcome and introduction

at Faena’s omakase speakeasy, El Secreto, before transitioning to the kitchen at Pao restaurant where the learning begins. Participants will gain insights into the history of sushi and master essential techniques like making sushi rice and honing their knife skills. The session covers everything from setting up the perfect sushi station and preparing

sustainably sourced fish to the correct way to chop vegetables for various types of sushi. Next, students dive into making nigiri, different styles of handrolls, and California and Rainbow sushi rolls. To further enhance the experience, carefully selected sake pairings will be available, perfectly complementing the flavors of the sushi creations.

Restaurant Pao by Paul Qui is redefining seasonal dining with new summer ingredients, an artinspired cocktail menu, a new wine class, and a must-try Miami Spice menu.

Sip & Savor Summer Flavors

“For summer, our oysters will have watermelon kimchi granita, making them super refreshing on a hot day,” said Executive Chef Paulina Ornelas. She also added a Short Rib Tobanyaki to the Asianinflected menu, which highlights a traditional Japanese culinary technique that involves cooking and presenting fall-off-the-bone Waygu beef on a handmade ceramic plate. In the realm of cocktails, mixologist Ritz Sagum has crafted a new innovative menu that explores Pao’s Asian roots with new ingredients and techniques that give oriental twists to handcrafted cocktails. “We drew inspiration from the Damien Hirst art pieces in the Faena District as well as the stories and symbolism behind the elaborate Juan Gatti murals in the Cathedral entrance,” said Sagum. The Myth cocktail is a nod to

Hirst’s large golden unicorn artwork that anchors the dining room of Pao. To celebrate Chef Paul Qui’s Filipino heritage, top shelf vodka is infused with Ube, a bright purple yam, and mixed with fresh pineapple and lemon juice and a splash of coconut rum that’s served in a unicorn vessel with a spring of mint. Chee Hi! is a nod to Faena’s ‘Amor’ mural relating to passion and love. The libation is derived from Japan’s whisky highball and mixes jasmine-infused vodka, lychee flower, hibiscus, a dash of orange bitters and garnished with a rose petal. “It’s approachable and effortlessly easy to drink,” he said. For the oenophiles, Pao is introducing an immersive wine class at El Secreto where guests sip old and new-world wines from vineyards across France, Italy, Germany, and Argentina. Led by

Faena’s head sommelier, guests will learn about the various wine regions, discover new vintages, and pair wines with gourmet bites like oysters and caviar toast. Pao’s participation in the citywide Miami Spice series introduces diners to a curated selection of its signature dishes alongside inventive new creations. Guests will find an ensemble of refreshing summer ingredients including green grapes, grapefruit ponzu, tangy apples, and a succulent branzino topped with black garlic miso labne and crispy kaffir breadcrumbs. Other popular standouts include Fried Chicken with sweet chili sauce and roasted banana ketchup, Ora King Salmon Aguachile, and a Wagyu Short Rib Rice Cake. The Braised Greens with king crab, snow pea leaves, coconut milk, and savory shacha sauce also promises to tantalize taste buds.

Resonant Rhythms

In The Living Room, music reflects the soul of Miami’s vibrant energy. Resident acts from Alfredo Rivero’s American Gipsy to music from Liset Alea, a founding member of the Parisian bossa nova band Nouvelle Vague, captivate audiences on a weekly basis.

Hailing from Cuba and enriched by Parisian influences, Rivero’s ensemble embodies a fusion of flamenco, jazz, and the timeless melodies of the famed musical collective The Gipsy Kings, where he served as the band leader during their U.S. and Latin America tours. A guitar virtuoso, Rivero has collaborated with Celia Cruz, Gloria Estefan, and Chico Castillo. “Their live performances are nothing short of mesmerizing,” said Richie Hell, Faena’s Music Director. “The band effortlessly

blends traditional gipsy melodies with inventive interpretations of iconic American hits, creating an atmosphere that is both nostalgic and exhilarating. Whether they’re enchanting us with the timeless rhythms of ‘Bamboleo’ or putting a gipsy twist on ‘Hotel California,’ each song resonates deeply with our diverse and discerning audience.”

Musical artist Liset Alea also graces the stage with her fusion of bossa nova, exotica, electronic beats, and worldly pop influences. “Liset’s music transcends genres,” said Hell. Born in Cuba and raised in Miami, Alea is known for her intimate performances, mesmerizing audiences with acoustic ballads and electronic tracks alike. Her repertoire spans a spectrum that showcases her versatility and artistic depth, ensuring each set is a unique exploration of sound and emotion. Her ethereal voice effortlessly shifts between English, French,

and Spanish, marrying minimalist tones with Latin rhythms to create a sophisticated yet soulful sound.

For the summer season, guests can enjoy “Golden Hour Serenades,” a three-hour musical compilation on Spotify. Meticulously curated by Hell, the playlist is more than just a collection of songs—it’s a reflection of the vibrant spirit that defines Faena and the eclectic pulse of Miami. Each track has been carefully selected to harmonize with the elegant lines and bold creativity of Faena , creating a symphony of sound that enhances a golden-hour experience by the pool, beach, or bar at Faena . “It’s another way for our guests to experience Faena and recall memorable moments of their stay long after they’re gone.”

In keeping with The Living Room’s commitment to providing the best in entertainment, Envee returns to Faena as October’s upcoming resident performer!

Queen of Collins

At Faena’s The Living Room bar, the Queen of Collins cocktail pays homage to its predecessor, The Saxony Hotel, affectionately known as “the Queen of Collins Avenue” in its heyday where icons Frank Sinatra, Marilyn Monroe and Dean Martin often performed. This vibrant drink blends Santa Teresa 1796 Rum, mango purée, Giffard Caribbean pineapple liquor, and fresh-pressed lime juice, capturing Miami’s tropical essence. “The Saxony was a glittering hotspot in the 50s and 60s, and this cocktail transports you back to that glamorous era,” said lead mixologist Joseph Restrani. Sip on the Queen of Collins and relive Faena’s luxurious past while enjoying a modern twist that reflects its rich history and timeless elegance.

WAI WAI RIO
NILUU

In anticipation of a new restaurant coming to Casa Faena this Fall, Brazilian artist João Incerti has transformed the hotel’s dining room into a tropical oasis with his bright, bold mural, titled ‘Let the Sun Come In.’ We talked to Incerti about his artistic journey and the inspiration for his latest artwork at Faena.

Let The Sun Come In

Tell us a little bit about yourself.

I’m a Brazilian artist based in Rio de Janeiro, but I grew up on a farm in a small town outside Rio called Teresópolis. I spent my childhood drawing and then went on to study fashion. I worked for the Brazilian brand Farm Rio, designing prints for clothes. During the pandemic, I started to paint and it changed my life. I left my job and started my career as an independent artist. Since then, I’ve painted murals in South America, the United States and Europe, and have done collaborations with various fashion brands.

How would you describe your artistic style?

I never want to be constrained to one particular style, so I am always changing what I do. I have an affinity for classic architecture and artists, but I also like very contemporary stuff. My art is very expressive, I try to convey my feelings in my work. I like to be bold; I like contrast. I like to write stuff. I like colors and saturation. My art is also very gestural; you can see my brush strokes. I don’t try to be a perfectionist. I like to be very natural.

What was your inspiration for the Casa Faena mural?

I previously painted a mural in the entrance hallway, so I wanted to play off that artwork, which has palm trees and coral reds with pink. I also wanted to do something very classic and simple, but very happy and tropical. The ceiling is pink, but very gestural, very imperfect, very expressive, and it contrasts nicely with the walls and corners that have the delicately painted flowers. I wanted to give the

sensation of sunshine illuminating the whole room, so I painted a sun on the dining room’s center pillar. It worked very well. I love the result. I also used a lot of pink and white stripes to add a classic feel, and of course palm trees, which are so important to Miami’s aesthetic.

How does the Faena District inspire you as an artist? The first time I went to Faena Miami Beach I was blown away by the large-scale murals that are

imbued with so much meaning. It’s not the abstract stuff you see in most places nowadays, which don’t tell you anything. Every time I come to Miami, I visit Faena because there’s so much to see, so many details that inspire me as an artist. The art here motivates me to do something different, create something new. I wouldn’t say bigger because it’s not about size, it’s about quality. You see very quality art here. I love how Faena still produces art movements; they support artists.
