2022 IMPACT REPORT FRENCH-AMERICAN FOUNDATION–UNITED STATES

Letter from the President Dear Friends, 2022 marked a return to normalcy for the French-American Foundation as we resumed in-person programming and were once again able to convene our special community for gatherings and conversations. The Foundation’s programs focus on bringing together American and French leaders for discussions on topics that are timely and relevant to both sides, with a singular focus on building strong and enduring networks between program participants. It is this idea of the power of personal relationships to effect change that distinguishes the Foundation’s work. There is no better example of this philosophy than our Young Leaders program. Held this past October in Austin, TX, our 2022 Class represented a broad array of fields – entrepreneurship, government, business, national security, and education among them – and a diversity of personal backgrounds. What stood out over the course of their week together was the quality of the conversations and the desire of all our Young Leaders to engage with their French counterparts in thought-provoking dialogue. That same spirit of exchange – or débat – was visible across our work this year: the Transatlantic Forum, Cyber Security Conference, Translation Prize, and Policy Breakfasts alike. Through these efforts, the Foundation works to engage diverse constituents on the most pressing issues of concern in the French-American relationship. In December, I was honored to represent the Foundation at the official White House arrival ceremony marking President Emmanuel Macron’s state visit to the U.S. Beyond the pomp and the pageantry, one essential truth shown through: as it has for 245 years, the French-American relationship remains central to ensuring continued peace and freedom on the European continent and around the world. Young Leaders Program October 25-29, 2022 | Austin, TX Since 1981, the Young Leaders Program has brought together early career professionals with exceptional leadership potential from France and the United States for a one-week program to share knowledge, exchange ideas, and build relationships. This year, the French-American Foundation hosted the program in Austin, TX with the theme of Entrepreneurship and the Innovation Economy. The goal of the week was to provide context and understanding of the issues surrounding Texas’ emergence as a high-tech center in the U.S.: rapid economic growth, the impact on local communities, the environmental costs of development, and the resulting political conflicts. This year’s program included visits to: • • • •

Start-up incubator Capital Factory, featuring conversations with leaders from the technology field, venture capitalists, entrepreneurs, and public policy experts. Luck Ranch, singer Willie Nelson’s property in Spicewood, TX, for conversations with farmers working there on the effects of climate change, regenerative agriculture, and the challenges of small-scale entrepreneurship. The Lyndon B. Johnson School of Public Affairs at the University of Texas, with panel discussions on the war in Ukraine and the current Texas political environment. A wrap-up session on what leadership means in the 21st century, led by Texas Tribune editor-inchief and Young Leader alumnus Sewell Chan (Young Leader 2009).

Interspersed throughout the week were opportunities to engage with local Texas culture and history, including a food tour of Austin, visits to the State Capitol, the LBJ Presidential Library, and the Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center. Throughout, the focus remained squarely on creating spaces for in-depth conversation and meaningful dialogue. Transatlantic Forum Founded in 2018, the Transatlantic Forum is an invitation-only membership group that brings together French and American professionals for in-depth conversations on contemporary issues of concern on both sides of the Atlantic. The program aims to provide a deeper understanding of the forces shaping both American and French societies in a warm, convivial atmosphere that fosters lasting relationships. The goal is to create a community that is informed, open-minded and committed to engaging personally on issues of critical import to the U.S. – France relationship. Members cross nationalities and professional fields: government, media, non-profit, academia, business, law, finance, the arts, and more. 9th Annual Cyber Security Conference November 30 – December 1, 2022 | Washington, D.C. The French-American Foundation has a longstanding commitment to advancing dialogue on cyber security-related topics of mutual concern for France and the United States. The Cyber Security Program comprises the annual Cyber Security Conference and relevant events in our other program initiatives that assemble leaders in military, government, industry, and academia to examine emerging cyber security challenges in a transatlantic context. The Foundation’s work in cyber security is an outgrowth of our historic work on defense and security issues, areas where FrancoAmerican cooperation continues to be active and strong. This year’s conference, the ninth edition, was entitled The Future of Democracy in the Digital Age: A Transatlantic Discussion on Evolving Geopolitics and Cyber Security. During the first day of the conference, participants explored evolving geopolitical challenges in the digital era through a series of moderated panel discussions and roundtable conversations. On the second day, the conference provided a closed-door forum under Chatham House Rule to address critical cyber security issues. Policy Breakfast Series The French-American Foundation’s Policy Breakfasts bring together high-level leaders for intimate, closed-door conversations with a guest of honor. Held at various locations around the city, the breakfasts focus on current events of economic, social, and political importance. 2022 Speakers: Gérard Araud, Former French Ambassador to the United States April 6, 2022 The French-American Foundation was honored to welcome Gérard Araud, Former Ambassador of France to the United States and France’s Former Permanent Representative to the United Nations in New York to discuss the war between Russia and Ukraine and the French presidential elections. The discussion was moderated by Christian Loubeau, U.S. Diplomat and Junior Associate Commissioner at the NYC Department of Design and Construction, and 2020 FAF Young Leader. Mr. Araud opened his remarks by providing historical context on the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, reminding the audience that the conflict represents the first war in Europe since 1945. Mr. Araud shared his views on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s response to the war, Vladimir Putin’s motivations, China’s stance, as well as insight into European and American reactions. The discussion then shifted towards the French Presidential election, with analysis of the impact that the conflict has had on French electoral trends and on the candidates’ polls. Gina Adams, Corporate Vice President for Government and Regulatory Affairs, FedEx Corporation May 5, 2022 The French-American Foundation was honored to welcome Gina Adams, Corporate Vice President for Government and Regulatory Affairs at FedEx and French-American Foundation Board member. The discussion was moderated by Geoffrey Chepiga, Partner at Paul, Weiss, Rifkind, Wharton & Garrison LLP and 2019 Young Leader. Ms. Adams opened the conversation by sharing a look into her own professional background and rise to her position as a leading public policy executive at FedEx. She went on to discuss both the opportunities and challenges of leading during the pandemic, and how FedEx – an essential business – navigated the pandemic response by working with governments around the world to adapt to changing regulatory requirements, such as lockdowns and safety restrictions.

Translation Prize Since 1986, the French-American Foundation, with the longstanding support of the Florence Gould Foundation, has awarded an annual prize for the best translation from French to English in both fiction and nonfiction. The Translation Prize has established itself as a valuable element of the intellectual and cultural exchange between France and the United States, promoting French literature in the United States and providing translators and their craft with greater visibility among publishers and readers. The prize also seeks to increase the visibility of the publishers who bring these important French works of literature to the American market in translation of exceptional quality. Winners are chosen by a jury of translators and literary professionals. Winners were honored at an Awards Ceremony on June 15, 2022. Fiction Lara Vergnaud, for her translation of Life Sciences by Joy Sorman (Restless Books) Lara Vergnaud is a translator of prose, creative nonfiction, and scholarly works from the French. She has translated books by Zahia Rahmani, Ahmed Bouanani, Mohamed Leftah, Samira Sedira, and Fatima Daas, among others. She is the recipient of two PEN/Heim Translation Fund Grants and a French Voices Grand Prize and was shortlisted for the 2022 PEN Translation Prize. Non-fiction Susan Emanuel, for her translations of The Belle Époque by Dominique Kalifa (Columbia University Press) and Rescue, Relief, and Resistance: The Jewish Labor Committee’s Anti-Nazi Operations, 1934– 1945 by Catherine Collomp (Wayne State University Press) Susan Emanuel has been a French-to-English translator for more than forty years, working on academic and general audience books, articles, and blogs in the social sciences, history, and philosophy. Sophie R. Lewis, for her translation of In the Eye of the Wild by Nastassja Martin Sophie R. Lewis is a translator and an editor. Working with Portuguese and French, she has translated Natalia Borges Polesso, João Gilberto Noll and Sheyla Smanioto, also Stendhal, Jules Verne, Marcel Aymé, Violette Leduc, Leïla Slimani, Noémi Lefebvre, Emmanuelle Pagano and Colette Fellous, among others. Gala 2022 June 7, 2022 | New York, NY The French-American Foundation held its annual Gala – the first in three years – on June 7, 2022. The evening honored Kenneth Jacobs, Chairman and CEO of Lazard, and Carol Bellamy, Former Executive Director of UNICEF, French-American Foundation Board Member, and Young Leader 1981. The Gala is the most important fundraising event of the year for the French-American Foundation and is essential to our ability to execute on our mission and programs. Chloe Demrovsky, CEO of Disaster Recovery Institute International and Young Leader 2019, and Adam Hodge, Assistant U.S. Trade Representative for Media and Public Affairs and Young Leader 2019, spoke eloquently on the subject of French-American friendship and the importance of continued dialogue and engagement across cultures.

French-American Foundation–France Founded concurrently with the French-American Foundation—United States in 1976, the FrenchAmerican Foundation—France works to promote a strong transatlantic dialogue and relationship through an ambitious series of programs and events covering subjects as diverse as economics, business, culture, healthcare, sports, and sustainability. The French-American Foundation—France focuses especially on the U.S aspects of these subjects. On average, the French-American Foundation—France organizes one event every seven days throughout the year. The teams of the two sister organizations work together on various programs, notably the annual flagship Young Leaders program, the yearly Cyber Security Conference held in December 2022 and, this year, their first joint transatlantic conference on sustainability in June 2023 in New York City. The French-American Foundation—France has been organizing for well over ten years its prestigious French-American Breakfast conference series which brings together anywhere from 100 to 200 participants every month to listen to French and American speakers share their expertise on a subject of transatlantic interest. Among the honored guest speakers in 2022-2023 were Anne Bouverot, Chairperson of Technicolor Creative Studios; Jean-Noël Barrot (YL 2021), Ministre délégué chargé de la Transition Numérique et des Télécommunications; Loretta Lynch, former Attorney General of the U.S. under President Obama; Jose Fernandez, Under-Secretary for Economic Growth, Energy and the Environment under President Biden; and François Villeroy de Galhau, Governor of the Banque de France. The French-American Foundation—France launched its Artificial Intelligence Conference Cycle this year, welcoming speakers such as Rafael Reit, President of MIT, along with world-renowned specialists from MIT on the subject of AI.

The French-American Foundation—France holds a series of Special Events throughout the year on a great variety of subjects; this past year, members heard from experts on the war in Ukraine, China and its economic challenges, economic inequalities, and sports and business. The French-American Foundation—France welcomed U.S. Congressional Staffers twice this year including an all-female delegation. The French-American Foundation—France continued its initiative #NewWorldNewLeaders focusing on the challenges of leadership in this ever-changing world. Leaders as diverse as Angela Williams, CEO of United Way, Gina Adams, Vice-president for Government & Regulatory Affairs at FedEx, and Catherine MacGregor, CEO of Engie, shared insights into their leadership styles. The French-American Foundation—France Translation Prize was awarded this year to Christel Gaillard-Paris for her translation of The Secrets We Kept, written by Lara Prescott, published in French as Nos Secrets Trop Bien Gardés, by Robert Laffont. The 2022 gala dinner of the French-American Foundation—France honored Jamie Dimon, Chairman & CEO of J.P. Morgan, for his contribution to fostering transatlantic cooperation and friendship. More than 500 guests attended the 2022 gala dinner at the Palais Chaillot overlooking the sparkling Eiffel Tower.
