Lefkada comprises 24 islands scattered within a tiny archipelago. It is located in the top half of the western coastland of mainland in Greece, between Corfu and Kefalonia and is the fourth in size Ionian Island. Lefkada’s landscape combines scenery both idyllic and rugged, inviting the visitor to roam in history of the Ionian Islands while giving the satisfaction of discovering exciting secrets in every corner of the island. Lefkada’s internal archipelago is considered by experts to be one of the best seas for sailing in the world. Lefkada enjoys all the advantages of an island without the disadvantage of accessibility; a floating bridge connects it to the mainland with traffic flowing uninterrupted. The greater part of the surface area is hilly, peaking at Stavrota at 1182m. The biggest plain is in the south in the Vassiliki area. The climate is mild Mediterranean.
Annual Weather Averages August is the hottest month in Lefkada with an average temperature of 25°C (77°F) and the coldest is January at 9°C (48°F). The best month to swim in the sea is in August when the average sea temperature is 26°C (79°F).

Lefkada town Brief history and its architecture From antiquity till today the island has had three capitals: ancient Nirikos in the Koulmos area, medieval Agia Mavra inside the fortifications, and today’s town, built in 1684 by decision of the Venetian Francesco Morosini, on the site it now occupies, that is in the Amaxiki area. It was designed by the Venetians based on the model of their own cities. Habitations originally surrounded the market, with the streets oriented in such a way that the wind would blow through them and keep the air clean.

Marka’s square
The town was rebuilt under the supervision of the British after the earthquake of 1825, based on their anti-seismic regulations. From then corrugated iron was used on the facade of houses. The upper floors were lighter and were reinforced with vertical beams so that the buildings would withstand shaking. Such houses can still be seen today in the narrow streets of the historical centre, made striking by the use of different colours. Builders from Epirus added their own typical elements such as masonry, ornamented windows, doors and so on.

Worth seeing Top things to see and do in Lefkada town
THE ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM It is a small but important museum, whose findings date from the Middle Paleolithic Age up to Roman Years. There is a separate room exhibiting the findings of Schliemann’s assistant, the German archaeologist Wilhelm Dӧrpfeld.
LEFKADA’S PUBLIC LIBRARY Housed together with the Collection of post-Byzantine Eptanesian Iconography in the two-storeyed Zoulinos house, it was founded in 1953. Printed material of all sorts has been collected here: books, periodicals, newspapers, older and newer editions, as well as a rich collection of Post Byzantine icons, mainly in the Ionian Islands’ style.
THE CHURCHES Some of Lefkada’s best features are its churches. They include basilicas, with the influence of Venetian architecture, usually adorned with iconography in the traditional Ionian, post-Cretan devotional style and with beautifully sculpted wooden iconostases, some in gold leaf. Most were inaugurated between the 17th and 18th centuries, their configuration finally determined from about 1836. The iconography was by notable devotional painters. If you love literature and history, don’t miss the chance to visit the Lafcadio Hearn Historical Centre

ORFEAS MUSEUM OF FOLKLORE It exhibits more than a thousand functional objects of Lefkada’s farm life, tools of old crafts as well as traditional costumes, embroideries, etc. It is now housed in its own restored building – a typical example of the architecture of the British period – behind Lefkada’s central square.
LEFKADA’S MARINA One of Lefkada’s most recent acquisitions is its marina, the most modern in Greece, situated on the east side of the town, with a 620 boat capacity. It is a town within the town of Lefkada with canals and bridges, and its own life. It has bars and restaurants and other types of activities. A walk around this place is always interesting.

THE CASTLE OF AGIA MAVRA At the way in to Lefkada town the castle of Agia Mavra stands proudly, a model of fortification architecture of the Middle Ages, with a central core in the shape of an irregular heptagon reinforced at its seven corners with bastions and three external ramparts. It protected the capital from the first decade of the fourteenth century until 1684.

THE INTERNATIONAL FOLKLORE FESTIVAL The International Folklore Festival is well known all over Greece and many of the world’s countries. It takes place in the last week of August. After the inauguration ceremony in Lefkada town there is the appearance of dance and music groups. It closes with a special ceremony and the Dance of Peace. It is thanks to the festival that significant artists have performed in Lefkada; the great Maria Callas, in 1964, made an unscheduled appearance in the town’s square, in what was to be her last live performance in Greece.

The international Sailing Regatta The international Sailing Regatta is a charity event which takes place annually (at the end of September) amongst the beautiful Ionian Islands to the south of Lefkas. All levels of ability are welcome & the Regatta is split into two classes depending on boat type.

Kalligoni Karyotes Setting out from Lefkada town in the direction of Nydri, is the community of Kalligoni, built on the site of ancient Nirikos, the island’s first capital from antiquity to the 13th century AD, when it was given the name of Lefkada. There are still clear traces of the enormous masonry blocks of the Cyclopean wall at the site called Koulmos and the remains of houses, the aqueduct, water reservoirs and vaults. Karyotes is the next village along the route. It was built in its present location in the 50s, and before then stood higher on the hill up above. The ruins are still there. Archaeologists have recently uncovered the ruins of an almost unknown ancient Greek theater in the area of Koulmos hill. Little is known so far about the sizeable theater but we will learn more in the future as the excavations continue.

It is worth making a detour from Karyotes area towards the Alexander’s Salt Marsh to see the remains of the old salt works which were particularly important to the economy of Lefkada in the past. The scenery here is interesting and unusual.
Moving southern from Karyotes, you come to the picture-perfect harbour of Lygia, the outlet to the sea of the mountain village of Katouna. It is one of Western Greece’s most important fish-wharfs. Nowadays, besides fishing and farming, the inhabitants find a lot of employment in the tourist sector and there is a number of newlybuilt hotels, rooms to let and seafront taverns serving fresh fish and a variety of other dishes. The beaches of the eastern side begin just after the picturesque harbour of Lygia which is 6 km from Lefkada town. As far as Nydri you will find countless and quiet beach spots. Skaros hill At the beginning of the main street of Nikiana a sign directs you right to the Hermitage of the Holy Fathers, Alexandros. After a few km of picturesque path ascending the hill on the left, you will find a small wooden sign to the hill of Skaros. It is one of the best spots in the interior of Lefkada with rare plants, a forest of a rare species of oak with spectacular geological formation. The top end of the journey will reward you with a magnificent view over the islands of Lefkada (see pages 112-113).
There you can find the Monastery of Ag. Georgios which was founded in 1611 and became by donation owner of the forest of Skarous. In the 18th century the monastery became richer and richer and possessed several churches, farmlands and 900 sheep and goats. In the mid 19th century the monastery went out of use.

Geni, Dessimi, Agia Kyriaki, Vlycho Go by car as far as Nydri and then on to Vlycho and turn left for Geni. Olive groves, coves, jetties and the houses for rent of the village of Geni, the path to Agia Kyriaki is signposted, where you leave the car. Take the narrow dirt path, which at the end goes right down to the water. Dessimi: In a bay on the outer shore of Vlychos peninsula. It is small and shady and

Top choices from Lefkada’s traditional cuisine
CUTTLEFISH IN THEIR INK, COOKED WITH RICE Cooking cuttlefish with their ink is an ancient custom. The dish is coloured black, completely black, and flavourful beyond words. In my home island of Lefkada it is often made, we loved it and my mother’s was always a success. The long sack with the ink is inside the cuttlefish’s body, down the length and secured with membranes. When the bone and the hard round nodule where the tentacles meet have been removed, carefully draw out the sack over a bowl to catch the ink if it spills. Collect all the ink in a bowl to start with and then remove the skins from the cuttlefish. Other than rice, you can use potatoes or short tubed macaroni.

LEFKADA’S PASTA When Greeks make a pasta dish called a makaronada, they generally mean meat cooked with a tomato sauce accompanying pasta, usually served with lots of grated cheese. Although there are many variations of this particularly popular dish. In Lefkada, pasta is cooked for the second day of Christmas, whilst on Christmas Day it is usually a chicken soup with rice and eggand-lemon, habitual in most parts of Greece. MEGANISSI Seen from above, there is an enticing lacework of coastline, forming deep fjord-like coves. Its 20 sq km surface is the permanent home of a thousand inhabitants living in the three hamlets of stone houses in the traditional building style: Katomeri, Spartochori and Vathy. The route from Spartohori to the port is most attractive, and half-way along you can glimpse the Cave of the Cyclops. Meganissi boasts many beautiful beaches and a number of sheltering coves which attract a multitude of sailing boats. It is connected by ferry to Nydri and there is a connection by speed-boat to the harbour of Lefkada.

KALAMOS An unusual mixture of vegetation and rocky outcrops, full of every kind of plant. There are four hamlets on the island: Kalamos, Episkopi, Kastro and Kefali. Kalamos itself is the picturesque harbour for all sorts of craft. The road to Episkopi, which starts at Kalamos, passes through a dense pine forest; it is the second smallest cluster of houses on the island where time seems to have stopped in 1960.

KASTOS An ideal place for a safe anchorage and rich spoils of fishing. Beaches include Ambelakia and Fyki (south); Vali, Kilada, Agios Aimilianos (where there is a grotto called Fokotrypa); Limni, Kamini and Vrisidi in the east which are also accessible by land.
SKORPIOS Skorpios: The most popular island of Lefkada and perhaps even Greece due to its owners, the Onassis Family and recently the Russian tycoon Rybolovlev. It’s a destination chosen by many people during their holidays in Lefkada. Skorpios is situated right across Nydri. It’s easily accessible by a private vessel or with tour-boats leaving from Nydri. Mikros Gialos Syvota Ammouso Below Poros village, on the road to the sea, there is the pretty little beach of Mikros Gialos, a peaceful and attractive beach with pebbles where the sea is unpolluted, in sheltered Rouda Bay. Being organized, is on the top of the visitor’s list. On the main road, some 6 km from Poros, the way goes down to the sea and Syvota. This is enchanting, built right on the shore in the embrace of green hills. It offers mooring and refuelling for many boats and a rest for the crews. According to Dorpfeld’s theory, this is where Odysseus landed on his return home. Today it offers some of the island’s best known fish tavernas serving delicious fresh fish, lobster and seafood. Ammousa or Ammouso: Close to Vassiliki. You get there by a detour of the main road after Marantochori. It is small, with pebbles and there is a taverna and a cafe with a nearby camping site.

Starting out from Lefkada town, follow the signs to Agios Nikitas village, passing the monastery of Panagia Faneromeni, the ‘Island’s Palladium’. There is an exceptional view to be enjoyed to the right. We reach the village of Tsoukalades, built on a height and hemmed in by olive trees. There are gorgeous views from there of the Ionian Sea from a number of different angles. Continuing along the asphalt road, a few kilometres further on there is a breathtaking sight of the vast Ionian Sea. The first beach on the route is one of the best: Pefkoulia. Here the pine trees descend down the slopes all the way to the seashore. The sea is wonderfully clear and the strand is of fine, rice-like grains as on almost all the beaches on Lefkada’s west coast, a caress for bare feet and easily flicked off the skin.

Silybum (milk thistle) is a genus of two species of thistles in the daisy family. The name “milk thistle� derives from a feature of the leaves, which are prominently banded with splashes of white. The most widespread species is Silybum marianum.
Crocus boryi is native to southern and western Greece, some Ionian islands, and Crete. It flowers in late fall. The typical flowers are cream-white and have rather thick sepals.
A few years ago a visiting botanist discovered a formerly unknown flower in the sands of Gyra which he called Arenaria Leucadia. Arenaria is a genus of flowering plants, within the family Caryophyllaceae.
On the plateau of Englouvi and Chortata where the renowned lentils and the Vartzami grapevine are cultivated, is where they say wild coral peony grows. Paeonia officinalis, the common peony, is a species of flowering plant in the family Paeoniaceae.

Agios Nikitas, Mylos A few kilometres further on is Agios Nikitas, listed as a village of the national heritage. It has attractive stone-built houses, shouldering one another with their roofs almost touching, not only because of limited space but also facilitating escape in case of the pirate raids of the past. Despite the unavoidable additional buildings in the surrounding area, the village preserves its charm. The sea that laps the seafront is crystal-clean and is a joy to swim in, with the added enjoyment of its setting amid enchanting scenery. From Agios Nikitas there is the shuttle service of a water taxi departing from the water-front to the next beach, Mylos, considered by some one of the two loveliest of the island. Its rather difficult access has saved it from the crowds and its endless stretches of immaculate beach and waters can be enjoyed with plenty of space from other bathers.

Local Products Famous and unique products of Lefkada
The most famous products of Lefkada are Englouvi’s lentils, thyme honey from Athani, sausages and wine. Also interesting are the local pies as well as mantolato and pasteli which used to be a specialty of the barbers! Ivari has excellent quality avgotaracho (roe) despite the fact that these are produced in small quantities. Also famous is the embroidery of Lefkada and the remarkable “Karsaniki” stitch (originated from the village of Karya) which doesn’t exist elsewhere in Greece.

In the town pies are not so common, while on the contrary in the villages they are ubiquitous and easily made. In addition to the vegetable pie with aromatic wild greens, also worthy of note are the rice pie (rizopita), pasta pie (macaronopita) made with eggs and milk, olive oil and cheese, as well as the ‘briani’, pie made with thick green courgettes.
The butchers continue, as they always did, to make the speciality air-dried salami and pork sausages. Lefkadian salami with its mild aroma of garlic and with whole peppercorns has been exported since olden times.

Englouvi’s lentils is an extremely rare and delicious variety that has been awarded in several agricultural product exhibitions.

The most reclaimed, traditional wine varieties that grow in Lefkada is Vertzami and Vardea. Grown on the municipal units of Sfakiotes, Karya, Apollon and Ellomenos at an altitude of 200 to 700 meters and considered among the best varieties our country produces. In recent years, thanks to the tourism development in Lefkada, young winemakers with expertise and modern facilities undertook the task to highlight the local wine varieties, even succeeding special awards at wine fairs. The winery facilities are open to public either directly or by appointment. A visit to a winery is a real journey into the world of wine. The duration of a tour ranges from 20 minutes to 1 hour, based on time and interest of the visitors. The tour begins with the exhibition of vintage wine-making tools. Later on passing through the vineyard, visitors will be introduced to the winemaking and production space, where they can see up close all the processes (vinification, aging, bottling). Finally the tour ends at tastings area, where visitors can taste and purchase the wines of the winery.

Be adventurous in Lefkada!
The island has become known because of its famous beaches that are considered the best in the Mediterranean sea. Few people know that the island has a rich and variable life that makes it ideal for alternative tourism. There is an extensive network of paths that are slowly restored to their previous form. Frequently mountaineering clubs from the region organize excursion trips mainly to the mountain of Elati and Stavrotas located at the plateau of Englouvi, as well as the mountain of Vouni at Kalamos.
