Czech Games Edition just launched two new big box games at Essen Spiel 2022 in Germany that will soon be coming to North America this winter. Deal with the Devil and Starship Captains both share some common euro game roots, but they’re distinctly themed games that each offer very unique experiences aimed at different audiences.

What is it at a glance?

A quirky and fun medieval fantasy kingdom building game that takes a more traditional heavy euro foundation and layers it with asymmetrical hidden roles, secret trading, tight resources, and pressure cooker inquisitions. This one is 4-players only with good reason: it just doesn’t work any other way, and we stand by it.

Deal with the Devil—from Matúš Kotry, the designer of Alchemists—is a deeply thematic euro-style game for 4 players, set in a fantasy medieval era. As rival rulers of the realm, players are competing to build the grandest city possible with limited resources. Each has a hidden role, however, which shapes their objectives, capabilities, and scoring strategies from game to game.

What makes it special:

Every choice you make in this game has a consequence, and juggling the perks and pitfalls of secret trades and while managing the resources needed to make your kingdom shine and avoid punishment by the inquisition across five rounds is a tense, captivating challenge. Playing as the devil, the cultist, or as a mortal also changes the strategic experience in fun ways.
