The Lay of the Land FIVE OF THE 11 FINGER LAKES – Canadice, Canandaigua, Hemlock, Honeoye, and Seneca – are in Ontario County. They’re long and thin, carved by receding glaciers 10,000 years ago. With a GPS and a tank of gas, there’s no telling what you’ll discover. The tilth left by the glaciers is IDEAL FOR FARMING – vegetables, fruits (especially grapes), nursery plants, hops, and even cannabis. We also produce dairy products, beef and poultry. You’ll taste the difference when you drink and dine local. The lakes retain heat, PERFECT FOR GRAPE GROWING. They warm the surrounding land, which prevents roots from freezing during cold winters. In the spring, the warmth protects the vines during sudden frosts, and in the fall, it allows grapes to ripen on the vine. ONTARIO PATHWAYS AND VICTOR HIKING TRAILS offer easy access to the great outdoors for all ages and abilities. THE HIGHEST POINT in Ontario County is “The Jump Off” on Gannett Hill in Naples. At 2,256 feet, its elevated lookout offers the best views of the region’s U-shaped valleys and steep hillsides. VICTOR IS ACTUALLY A ROCHESTER SUBURB. Home to many commuters, Ontario County is only about 10 miles southeast of the city of Rochester. FOUR INTERCHANGES ON THE NEW YORK STATE THRUWAY provide easy access to Ontario County. You can easily get here from just about anywhere and vice versa. DRUMLINS – small, low, rounded hills created at the end of the last ice age – make our landscape look like a gently rolling blanket. Hill Cumorah, 2 miles north of thruway exit 43, is a drumlin. Drumlins are aligned in the direction of ice flow with the steep, blunt end facing upstream and the gentle, tapered end facing downstream. In height, they rarely exceed 200 feet. GEOCACHING is an easy, fun, all-age way to engage with the outdoors. Load the app at geocaching.com. ONTARIO COUNTY rates in the top 10 percent of the “Best Places to Farm” in the United States. Half of the Ontario County land area is classified as Prime Farmland (adequate moisture and drainage, adequate soil depth and texture, are not susceptible to erosion or flooding, and sustain high yield production with minimal fertilizer and energy requirements). More than 100,000 additional acres of farmland are highly productive, level to gently rolling, and are of statewide importance. We put the farm in Farm to Table.

The Essentials BATHING SUIT, SHORTS, JEANS, T-SHIRTS, SNEAKERS, SANDALS. The vibe is decidedly casual, maybe smart-casual for a dinner out, concert at Geneva’s Smith Opera House, or a play at Bristol Valley Theater in Naples. A HOODIE OR FLEECE, LIGHT SWEATER OR JACKET. You’ll be happy you have it, especially in the evening, near the water. A colorful blanket or shawl to bring out on a boat isn’t a bad idea, and it’s great for photos. WATER SHOES FOR EVERYBODY. SERIOUSLY. Wearing mesh shoes with a hard sole in the lake will protect your feet from sharp rocks and zebra-mussel shells. They’ll also give you traction on docks and boats. (And add color!)

WINE-TOUR ATTIRE FOR GUYS: nice shorts, pants or jeans. Sweatpants would be gauche. Same with trucker hats. Fedoras are acceptable, along with baseball caps worn correctly. A collared button-down shirt is best, but a V-neck or simple t-shirt (no Citizen Dick or similar band logos) will work. Comfortable shoes or dress sneakers. A CRAFT BREWERY-WEAR SUGGESTION FOR THE LADIES: dresses and skirts are cute and cool, but pants or shorts may be better. They make for an easier (and less embarrassing) exit from the picnic tables, benches, and boujie limousines. ONE SMALL UMBRELLA PER PERSON. Finger Lakes weather changes throughout the day. And, it may be sunny in Canandaigua, but it could be raining in Naples.

A plaid blanket with a waterproof backing. Works well whether there’s a picnic table or not. One place setting per picnic participant – a plate or bowl, glass or cup, and a knife, fork, and spoon (or spork). For a more formal or romantic fête champêtre, consider packing your best china, crystal, silver and table linens. Bring cloth napkins as picnics are messy, and litter isn’t cool. A cutting board and sharp knife – useful for cheese, charcuterie, fruit, vegetables or bread. Suggestion: prepare sandwiches onsite for a fun, fresh activity. Locally crafted beverages with twist-off caps OR a corkscrew and bottle opener – or both. Just in case. A handsome picnic basket, classic tote, or functional backpack. Base your decision on your destination – back woods or beach? A cooler with ice – could also double as a tote or extra seating. Bags for waste or leftovers. Carry-in, carry-out, carry on.

FAQ Canandaigua SO HOW DO YOU PRONOUNCE “CANANDAIGUA”? “can-an-DAY-gwuh” DOES IT MEAN SOMETHING? “The Chosen Spot” or Kanandarque, named by the Haudenosaunee, the region’s indigenous people.
EVERYONE TALKS ABOUT CONCERTS AT “SEEMAC.” It’s CMAC – the Constellation Brands-Marvin Sands Performing Arts Center. It’s a giant concert shell on a hill, where world-famous bands come to perform. There’s indoor seating for 5,000 plus lawn seating for 10,000.
HOW DEEP IS THE LAKE? The average is 127 feet; the maximum is 276 feet. The lake is 16 miles long and 1.5 miles wide. WHERE CAN I LEARN MORE? Ontario County Chamber operates a visitor center Monday through Saturday at 113 S. Main St. in historic downtown Canandaigua.

FAQ Canandaigua (continued)
CANANDAIGUA HAS ITS OWN AIRPORT? Yes. Private planes and business jets fly in and out carrying tourists, performers, student pilots, corporate executives and people who love to fly. Makes for a great selfie!

IS THE RING OF FIRE SCARY? No, it’s fun. During Labor Day weekend it begins with a giant bonfire on top of Bare Hill. That’s the signal for people around the lake to light flares or fires, creating a glowing ring around the lake. It was a tradition among the people of the Seneca Nation, a way to give thanks for a plentiful harvest. SO MANY SIGNS SAY “ROSELAND” … From 1925 to 1985 an amusement park called Roseland operated along Canandaigua Lake’s north shore. The name became synonymous with family fun in our community. Today there are Roseland Water & Wake Park on 5 & 20 and Roseland Bowl Family & Fun Center on Recreation Drive. WHAT’S THE BEST RESTAURANT? Whoa! There are way too many to list here! They range from French, German, Italian, Indian, Thai, Chinese and Japanese to downhome American and haute cuisine. There are downtown options, uptown options, and slightly-out-of town options. May we suggest Central on Main during a summer weekend? The outdoor dining venue offers food from several downtown restaurants, delivered right to your table. Enjoy, beer, wine, and live music.

The Blue Whale
From Practical Craft to Decorative Art May 27, 2022 - April 28, 2023
A Sand Bar staple, The Blue Whale has been served at boujie Finger Lakes house parties for generations. At its most simple, it’s lemonade, blue curacao and vodka stirred in a pitcher with ice. The pitcher – usually one of a succession – is then shared at a lakeside table. “Do you know anything about the regional nature of a Blue Whale being made with vodka instead of rum in the Finger Lakes?” someone asked cocktail historian David Wondrich. David was stumped, but his recipe in The Daily Beast is an either/ or. If you use vodka, do it as a shooter, he recommends. Same recipe, but after you shake it, strain it into two tall shot glasses; no rocks or seltzer. Share with a friend or drink both.

THE BOATHOUSES are strictly boathouses, not cottages – a unique and picturesque reminder of the city’s heritage. The first boathouses were built in the mid-1800s. By 1888, there were 80 of them. The finger piers were constructed in 1903. THE CITY PIER, built in 1848, was expanded in 1903 to accommodate tracks for trolleys and trains. They transported cargo and passengers to and from the lake’s steamboats. KERSHAW PARK was the result of filling in eight acres of the lake in 1920. The public park and beach were named for their biggest advocate, John Kershaw, a member of the Canandaigua Board of Health at the time. SONNENBERG GARDENS & MANSION STATE HISTORIC PARK features 50 acres of gardens and a Queen Anne Style mansion, straight from the Gilded Age. Sonnenberg means “Sunny Hill” in German. GRANGER HOMESTEAD is another mansion, but in the 1816 Federalist style. The former home of Gideon Granger, Postmaster General for Presidents Jefferson and Madison, is an historic house and carriage museum. BRISTOL MOUNTAIN is home to the Finger Lakes’ premier ski resort, and to Aerial Adventures, with seven ziplines totaling 5,000 square feet. It’s 13.2 miles southwest of Canandaigua.

Pop Culture From 1900 to 1915, FILM STAR HUMPHREY BOGART spent his childhood summers at his parents’ cottage on Seneca Point in Canandaigua. “Here’s looking at you, kid.” TRAVIE MCCOY, frontman of the alternative hip-hop group Gym Class Heroes and the actress LAUREN HOLLY are both from Geneva. Olympic Rower MEGHAN MUSNICKI is from Naples. ELVIS PRESLEY once visited Clifton Springs for the famous sulphur treatments. Actress KRISTEN WIIG, swimmer RYAN LOCHTE, and actor MICHAEL PARK from “As the World Turns” were born in Canandaigua. STEVEN PAGE, formerly of the Barenaked Ladies, has a song titled “Clifton Springs” on his solo album “Page One” released in 2010. Headbands are seeing a comeback! They’re a necessary accessory for a ride on the water or on the road in a convertible. Guys: protect your pate with the Tropicwear Fishing Hat from LL Bean. It’s cool, lightweight, and blocks at least 97.5 percent of the sun’s UV rays – about 10 times more than a white cotton tee. Even in summer, denim is better, according to some industry experts. Denim Bermuda shorts with a T-shirt is a lake-y classic. Add a ruchedsleeve blazer for evening, or cooler days.
How about “Shortalls” (short overalls) for little girls? With an abundance of pockets, they’re perfect for collecting beach glass, found fish vertebrae, and fairy stones with holes. Classic Checkerboard Vans, synonymous with surfing and skating, are the new neutral. Ladies: try them with a heavily printed dress and camouflage-print bag, says UK fashion blog hotdrops. PRO TIP: synthetic, high-performance base layers keep you cool and dry on humid summer days. For the Kenny Chesney concert at CMAC, pair your cowboy boots with a flouncy summer dress and woven bag for stylish comfort. The Towel Terry short-sleeve shirt for little boys is seriously soft, perfect for poolside, lakeside, all the sides.

Beer that Tastes like the Finger Lakes A new hops breeding program began last year at Cornell AgriTech in Geneva, reports the Penn Yan Chronicle Express. Its goal is to grow and develop signature New York hops varieties selected for high yield, preferred flavors, and disease resistance. As the industry has grown, so too has consumer demand for locally sourced craft beers with a unique flavor profile. No less than 60 percent of a brewery’s hops and 60 percent of all other ingredi-

ents must be grown in New York state for a brewery to hold a state license. Our craft breweries struggle to maintain those percentages due in part to a lack of New York-developed hops varieties. “Quirky hop varieties are all the rage among today’s craft beer consumers,” Rick Pedersen told the Chronicle Express. The owner of Pedersen Farms near Geneva produces hops for a number of Finger Lakes breweries. “Consumers want ‘new and different.’”
Geneva Landmarks see map on page 28 THE DOVE BLOCK memorializing Arthur Dove (1880-1946), considered America’s first abstract artist, worked in a studio at the intersection of Castle and Exchange streets downtown. The three-story brick building was built in 1878 by Dove’s father, a brick manufacturer. After New York and Paris, Geneva in the 1930s gave Arthur new subject matter, notes the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Representations of the family farm, local barnyard animals, the Finger Lakes, and Geneva’s industrial downtown with warehouses and railroad tracks can be found in his work. THE MAGNIFICENT SMITH OPERA HOUSE has been saved from the wrecking ball twice. A massive community effort that began in 1994, the building’s centennial, restored the original façade and the art deco opulence of the interior. Improvements continued and today The Smith stands as one of the oldest operating performing-arts theaters in the U.S. LINDEN STREET, once quietly fading into the background of Geneva’s city streets, is now a celebrated part of Geneva’s downtown. Linden Street has seen a revitalization in the form of innovative and energetic young businesses from wine and cocktail bars to one-of-a-kind restaurants which each have a unique look and feel. Linden Street is the place to be for any food and beverage enthusiast, those looking for local artistic flair, or anyone looking for a new experience. “PEACE,” A GEORGIAN PINK MARBLE SCULPTURE in Pultney Park, is one of only 394 monuments – out of 5,193 public statues on display in the U.S. – that depicts a woman. She is in the center of a stone fountain dedicated to the memory of the veterans of the Civil War, the Spanish American War and World War I. T-SHIRTS AND HOODIES from Lakebones are highly prized. They’re silkscreened by hand and sell out fast. Look for them at the Red Jacket Farm Store in Geneva. While you’re there, pick up a six-pack of Red Jacket cold-pressed, unfiltered juice, stomp, cider, or lemonade. They’re as close as you can get to eating whole fruit. THE FINGER LAKES WELCOME CENTER pays tribute to the region’s famous vineyards and namesake lakes. The Taste NY Market at the Welcome Center offers hot and cold lunch options such as seasonal soups and salads, sandwiches, and a kids menu, all made from fresh ingredients and products grown and produced by local farmers.

The Healthful History of Clifton Springs exploring Main Street
In 1849 homeopath and hydrotherapist Henry Foster, MD purchased 10 acres of land with a wild sulphur brook. On it he built a facility to provide mineral-water cures. It was the first hospital in the region and opened to a long line of waiting patients. A new red-sandstone building with a tower, the Clifton Springs Sanitarium (“The San”) was erected in 1896. With five stories, it had electric lights, gas, and the latest medical equipment, including an X-ray machine. Its chapel features a mosaic by Tiffany Studios.

Thousands of people from all over the country came to heal mind, body and spirit. A surgical department was opened, plus an eye, ear, nose and throat division and the first open-ward psychiatric unit in the U.S. In 1971, a new, modern hospital building was dedicated. The sanitarium became the SPA APARTMENTS. It and other sanitarium buildings are on the National Register of Historic Places today. FOSTER COTTAGE, the founder’s former home, is a museum.
