A Peep into Hen & Chicks

A Peep into Hen & Chicks
Studio
by Victoria Ritter
One of my first informal forays into art was the “paint with water” Disney books in the 90s. My sister and I often spent many a Saturday afternoon at the kitchen table carefully dabbing water onto pages depicting our favorite fairy tales and marveling as the colors appeared. It was a very basic concept, but we went about it like we were the next Georgia O’Keefe or Beatrix Potter.
Fast forward about 25 years to this past August when my parents returned from a trip to France and the U.K. Being an anglophile, I had requested that they bring me back something small from England. Our family gathered together for Labor Day weekend and unwrapped our gifts. My sister and I were thrilled to each get a set of Paddington coloring pages – one for colored pencils, another of watercolors. The two of us immediately got to work testing out one of the watercolor prints. We traded a mutually chosen print back and forth, testing out how much water to apply to the paint, layering techniques and color combinations. It was as if we were young kids again. The finished painting is now hanging proudly on my fridge, bearing our signatures.
Our experience provided a couple insights. First, never underestimate the impact of art; it can stay with you for many years. Although I eventually picked up a writing pen instead of a painter’s brush, occasional artistic ventures bring me abundant joy and an appreciation of those who pursue their creative passions.
As I interviewed Heidi Kaisand of Hen & Chicks Studio in Conrad, Iowa for this issue’s store profile, I marveled at how Kaisand’s enthusiasm for quilting evolved into owning a quilting store in the Midwest. She reminded me of one of my aunts, an avid quilter who has made various quilted items for relatives. My aunt called me recently about a Christmas tree skirt she was making for me. Once I answered her questions about personal fabric preferences, our conversation naturally turned toward other projects and how her house had slowly been taken over by sewing materials. It made me smile to hear my normally soft-spoken aunt open up and share where her crafting journey was taking her. I wish all artists and crafters never lose their sense of wonder and excitement in their work.
The second insight was to never be afraid to try something new. If it helps, bring a friend (or, in my case, a sibling) along for support. You may find something that tickles your fancy or lead to another passion. And that’s what this magazine comes in. You can explore what’s available and trending in the art and crafts industry, connect with experts and peruse creative avenues for your business.
Inside this issue, you will find not only Kaisand’s story, but also a feature on how Michael Roger incorporates imagination and eco-friendly measures into their products. Plus, it’s time for the annual Buyers Guide, which provides insight on what’s available in the art and craft industry.
Happy reading!

Conrad, Iowa is your typical farming community with a population of roughly 1,100 and a downtown that’s one block long. Among the storefronts sits a cozy quilting and fabric emporium, Hen & Chicks Studio which is the city’s third iteration of a quilt shop. The store, founded and owned by Heidi Kaisand, seeks to inspire creativity in all who visit.
Kaisand is a long-time quilter. Starting at the age of 9, she learned the craft from her grandmother and was a member of 4-H for 10 years. “I learned to quilt before rotary cutters,” Kaisand said. “I learned to pull threads to cut fabric and I hand-stitched my first full-sized quilt when I was a sophomore in high school.”
Kaisand went on to study consumer food science and food nutrition with an emphasis in writing recipes. She worked for publisher Meredith Corporation and jumped at the opportunity to write “recipes for quilts.” She also hosted local quilting retreats. Her passion for quilting never diminished and her dream of making a career out of quilting soon came to fruition.
Around 2010, the owners of a quilt shop in Conrad approached Kaisand and asked if she was interested in taking over their business. Kaisand was initially hesitant, but thought it over. Owning a quilt shop would not only allow her to follow her passion, but also remain available for her family. Plus, there was room to establish a retreat center on the second floor. Kaisand ended up purchasing the building itself, but didn’t take on the former business’ inventory or name.
“It was easier to just start from scratch,” Kaisand said.
Kaisand named the store Hen & Chicks Studio, a reference to herself and her three children. Today, she works alongside her daughters, Goldie and Virginia, along with eight to 10 employees.
Hen & Chicks Studio measures roughly 75 long and 25 feet wide, with two thirds of the space allotted to retail. The product selection mainly focuses on fiber arts including quilting, embroidery, hand applique and specialty fabrics. (The store once offered scrapbooking supplies, but the demand was not enough to keep it in stock.) Popular fabrics come from brands such as Beginning Fabrics, Andover Fabrics, Timeless Treasures, Windham Fabrics, Sykel Enterprises and Riley Blake Designs.
“We have a variety of fabrics,” Kaisand observed. “I always describe my taste as eclectic,
so therefore the look of the store is eclectic.” She went on to explain she curates her inventory from sales reps, trends she has seen online and shows including Creativation by Namta, h+h americas and Quilt Market, an international quilt festival.
To keep records up to date, employees perform daily spot checks, replacing any products that have been depleted on the shelves and checking inventory for back-up supplies.
Hen & Chicks Studio also offers online shopping, sharing the same POS system as in-store purchases. Although online sales account for about 20 percent of the store’s revenue, this retailer has quite a far reach. In 2023, Kaisand shipped orders out across the U.S. – there was even one customer who regularly ordered from Alaska –as well as Australia and parts of Canada.
“We spread creativity coast to coast,” Kaisand said. The back third of the building is reserved for offices
and a long arm quilting machine rental. The machine has been available to rent out hourly since 2015. “It’s a nice add-on for customers to have access to the machine,” Kaisand said.
Kaisand welcomes a variety of customers through her doors, as some come to shop, rent out the long arm, attend classes or book rental space. Her main customers

for the store are those who are consistently working on projects.
To further engage customers, Kaisand introduced a monthly subscription program, Feathered Friends.
Participants have three levels to choose from: rooster, hen or chick. The subscription comes with a regular newsletter, special project ideas, previews of products and exclusive discounts.
Recently, Kaisand has seen a trend toward more handiwork crafts and smaller projects such as needle punch or lap quilts. She explained these smaller-scale endeavors are not as overwhelming nor as expensive as larger works, thus making them more appealing to crafters and quilters.
“It’s not very often that we sell fabric for a king-sized quilt,” Kaisand added. “When you think about the cost of just to get it quilted, it’s hundreds of dollars.”
Crafting retreats have been a major focus for Kaisand’s business. Six weeks after Hen & Chicks Studio opened, she had her first retreat center in the upstairs space, appropriately called the Nest. The retreat center started out with 18 twin beds as well as a full kitchen and an area for quilting and crafting.
Over the following years, Kaisand made small adjustments as she got a better idea of her customers’ needs. She realized that the “sweet spot” for attendees was four to eight people. Still, she needed some extra space to keep up with the demand. This past summer, she proudly opened her second retreat center, fondly called the Coop, two doors down from the store. The space, about 25 feet smaller than the Nest, also came with a kitchen and two large bedrooms. Kaisand split the beds up, leaving 10 in the Nest and giving eight to the Coop – with four in each bedroom.
“We get a wide variety of creative women in the retreat centers. We see everything from scrapbooking groups to quilters and everything in between,” Kaisand said. “Quilting is as much social as it is about making the actual quilt.”
Both the Nest and the Coop are available seven days a week, with no minimums for people or time. A $50 deposit is due at the time of scheduling, but Kaisand
doesn’t charge people until they arrive. “Nobody is penalized for somebody not showing up,” she explained. “It’s worked for me so far for 13 years.”
The most popular timeframe for rentals is three days, two nights as people book weekend retreats. Kaisand provides bedding and towels, beverages, power strips, extra table lights, irons and cutting mats to decrease the amount of stuff people have to bring in. “We try to make it as easy as possible.” Additionally, retreaters receive a 15 percent discount at the store during their stay.
Whenever the Nest and the Coop aren’t booked out, they play host to classes. Hen & Chicks Studio offers a long arm machine certification course and introduced crochet classes in November. In the past, Kaisand has hosted a virtual binding class and even had a yoga session to entice new customers to come in the store.
Kaisand has faced common challenges that come with managing an independent business such as finances and managing variables. However, she views obstacles as opportunities to learn and further engage with customers.
“Covid was a unique challenge, but in a very positive way,” Kaisand commented. “We tried to perfect our shipping and being able to handle things online and that pushed us forward.”
Kaisand and her staff continue to be on the lookout for ways to refresh what they currently have and learn more about how to use social media to connect with customers. Through the good and the bad, Kaisand enjoys coming in to work. “There’s always something I can improve upon,” she said. “It’s about being open to the possibilities of what we can do.”

We’re pleased to share exciting updates and new initiatives from NAMTA, thoughtfully crafted to support, inspire and drive growth within the fine art and creative materials industry. Our latest offerings include expanded educational resources through our creative products certification program and an intuitive and thoughtful renovation to our learning management system, The Studio.
Originally created to foster connection during the pandemic, the content offered on Namta Connect has continued to grow, and we remain committed to providing ongoing learning and engagement beyond our annual Creativation. As NAMTA’s dedicated learning platform for the creative industry, The Studio has been reimagined to offer a richer, more engaging learning experience tailored to support your professional and educational growth.
The enhanced Studio has a more updated visual experience with simplified and stylish branding as well as an improved organization system enabling seamless access to curated content, training and industry resources. With an updated organizational system, navigating videos and courses is now easier, allowing you to customize your learning path with topics that match your specific interests. We are confident that this new platform design will elevate your learning experience and help you stay at the forefront of the creative industry.
Within The Studio, we are expanding our Creative Product Certification. The initial response to our first CPC training series has been outstanding. This success highlighted the need for additional content to address more specific areas of interest. After gathering feedback from a diverse group of participants –ranging from certified salespeople to sales leaders and retail owners – we identified seven new topics to develop for a second training series. These topics encompass key areas that fine art retailers consider crucial for a comprehensive understanding of the product landscape, as well as content specifically requested by papercraft and general crafting retailers.
The new topics for the training series include: understanding supports such as canvas, panels, gesso and more; an overview of dry media and drawing tools; advanced guidance on selecting the right paper for papercrafts; techniques for decorating surfaces, including heat embossing, foiling and embellishments; a look at essential machines and tools, from embossing to die-cutting; and an exploration of printed images with two parts – stamping techniques and an introduction to printmaking.
The expanded series will debut at Creativation in Seattle this spring and will be available for training shortly thereafter. As with the first series, each module will feature a 10- to 15-minute video followed by a certification quiz. Completing all seven videos and quizzes will earn participants a second-level certification and a new, uniquely designed pin to pair with the original certification pin!
We’re excited to bring these new developments to our community and are confident that they will enrich your journey in the fine art and creative materials industry. NAMTA remains dedicated to empowering professionals through dynamic education, meaningful connections and resources that keep pace with industry innovation. We look forward to supporting your growth with these expanded offerings and to seeing you at Creativation by Namta in Seattle this spring! As always, our goal is to best represent our members and serve as a bridge that supports and connects retailers, suppliers and creative professionals across the industry.
If you have feedback on any of these recent enhancements or suggestions for new ways NAMTA could provide value, we’d love to hear from you. We welcome your ideas and encourage you to reach out so we can continue shaping our offerings to meet your needs.
Savannah Davis is the communications and marketing manager at Namta.

Michael Roger has extended its Decomposition line of environmentally friendly products. Examples include folders made from recycled plastic milk jugs, Forest Stewardship Council-certified pencils fashioned out of incense cedar and ballpoint pens constructed from 90 percent post-consumer waste recycled plastic.
“If you give value to recycled products, it encourages recycling,” Held observed. “If there’s no value to it, then it all goes in the same landfill.”
A new product is the Birds of Prey Gift Set which had a soft launch in October. The package features three different notebooks and a set of 12 pencils in a custom-printed box. Held also expressed an interest in a clothing line featuring popular designs from Decomposition Books.
“We are not just a book company anymore. We are a lifestyle brand,” Held said, adding Michael Roger has 150 SKUs. “We want to appeal to a broad range of customers.”
When introducing a new product, the Michael Roger team makes sure that they can provide a variety of iterations as well as consider whether it will resonate with customers. They typically release a cover refresh twice a year, each with five to seven designs.
“We want to protect our retailers,” Held said. “We want to give them all winning products. If something comes up that doesn’t look like a winner, we don’t want to damage that relationship.”
Retailers can order a fixture that holds up to 16 items and customize the designs to fit the aesthetic of the store or the interests of customers. That way, retailers can offer an assortment that’s unique to them. “We have a lot of fun and different design choices that speak to what people are into.”
Held enjoys coming up with new designs and ideas for merchandise just as much as he appreciates seeing the creative ways they’re used. He noted how one writer posted on Instagram how she starts all of her novels in a Decomposition Book. Meanwhile, a teacher keeps a Michael Roger notebook on hand to write notes to students and personal memos.
“We’re grateful to our customers who have invited us into their stores and homes and have let us be part of their scripts and poetry. It’s a point of honor to be a choice in people’s backpacks.”
by Victoria Ritter
Michael Roger is a small company with big dreams. The family-owned and -operated business got its start in 1949 publishing Library of Congress catalogs and transitioned to making ledger books for government offices and police departments. Four generations later, Michael Roger is known for producing journals, sketchbooks, notebooks, binders and writing utensils under the leadership of President Eric Held.
Michael Roger puts a strong emphasis on the quality of its paper and providing a wide variety of product types. Its extensive catalog showcases notebooks in numerous sizes and aesthetic designs.
“I think having pen and paper is really important and grounding for a lot of people,” Held stated. “It’s a nice way to take a digital break and create something of record that’s not going to disappear into the ether. It’s easier to be creative.”
The most recognized product from Michael Roger is its Decomposition Books, a series of earth-conscious notebooks. The basis for the line
started with Held’s father’s Basic Books, which were simply made with board, paper and wire. Held took it one step with Eco Books that were made with 100 percent post-consumer waste paper. He was inspired by the traditional composition books used in schools which he described as “a nice, fun, living tool.”
“The problem was it didn’t look great,” Held reflected. “It looked like a shopping bag. For some people, having a simple, blank canvas is inviting; in the art market in particular, people like to decorate it and make it their own. But the problem that we had was that it didn’t stand out. So, we went back to the drawing board.”
After some deliberation, Held’s brother Jacob brought up the idea of Decomposition Books. In addition to being eco-friendly, Held wanted the notebooks’ design and aesthetic to be of paramount concern. The company initially released two designs –a cherry blossom pattern (now retired) and wood grain – and quickly expanded to a handful of motifs. There are currently more than 100 designs, many of which start out as linoleum prints from an in-house artist.
“We like to have that handmade feel to the artwork,” Held said. “Not everything is digital. Grounding and keeping a hand in the physical world is important to our aesthetic and to what we’re doing.”
