Code of Conduct

A game on every table, a table for everyone. Origins Game Fair would like to assure our attendees that we are committed to the safety of every person at the show. We have created a convention code of conduct policy that fosters a safe and welcome space for all.

We have implemented a policy where every volunteer will be subject to a background check before being allowed to participate in our program.

We have contracted with a counseling professional to train our staff how to respond to any inappropriate behavior by those attending this year’s Origins Game Fair.

Anti-Harassment

We do not tolerate harassment of convention participants in any form. Convention participants reported or caught violating this policy may be expelled without refund at the discretion of show management.

Harassment is any unwanted contact, which includes (but is not limited to): physical or verbal threats; unwelcome attention; stalking; unwanted photography or recording; offensive behavior; use of physical force; behavior that creates a disturbance or is dangerous; using sexually explicit or offensive language or conduct; excessive profanity; obscene gestures; use of racial, religious, sexual, political, gender, ability, ethnic slurs, or any other targeted comments which are intended to cause personal offense to another Origins participant, either in-person at the event or through social media channels.

If a person tells you “no,” you are expected to desist immediately. Remember:

• “No” means no.

• “Stop” means stop.

• “Go away” means go away.

• Attire is not consent.

Individuals finding themselves in a situation where they feel their safety is at risk or who become aware of an attendee not in compliance with show policies should immediately locate the nearest Security Guard, Origins Volunteer, or Staff Member, so that the matter can be handled promptly. The Origins Show Office is in C172. During show hours you can always find an Origins Staff Member or Security Guard in the Show Office.

If, at any point, you feel like your personal safety or that of others is put in jeopardy, please contact the Columbus Police Department at 614-645-4545 (non-emergency) or 911 (emergency).

Reporting Harassment or Conduct Violations

If you experience harassment or witness any harassing behavior, it is important to report it immediately. Please find the nearest Security Guard, Origins Volunteer, or Staff Member. All Origins Volunteers can be identified via their Origins Volunteer T-shirt. You can also go to the Show Office or email us at john.stacy@gama.org to report an incident.

Costume and Weapons

Uniforms of current active service members are not allowed as costumes. These include uniforms for the police, active military, security guards, deputies, fire marshals, paramedics, etc.

No real weapons or functional props are allowed at Origins. All weapon replicas must be cleared by convention security and peace bonded to indicate that the items are safe and have been inspected. Once we have zip-tied your item, you are not permitted to remove it. Security will have zip ties on hand at the show. Visit the Security Office directly outside of the Exhibit Hall in the Main Concourse to peace-bond your item.

Animals

Service animals are allowed in the Greater Columbus Convention Center. Service animals are defined as animals that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for the benefit of an individual with a disability.

Security

Security is provided by off-duty law enforcement personnel, professional security guards, and Origins security staff. All security personnel serve to ensure that everyone is safe and has an enjoyable experience at the show.

Alcoholic Beverages and Illegal Substances

Possession or consumption of alcoholic beverages outside of authorized areas prohibited. Illegal substances at Origins will not be tolerated. Violators will be asked to leave the building and charges may be filed for prosecution.

Smoking

Smoking, including the use of electronic smoking devices, is not allowed inside any of the convention facilities, including public areas and participating hotels. Smoking and the use of electronic smoking devices is allowed outside in designated smoking areas. Cigarette butt litter is a hazard to the environment. Please do your part to keep Columbus clean and dispose of your trash in the proper receptacles.

Advertising

Advertisement during Origins must be approved and cleared by Origins staff. Any flyers, posters, or advertisements of any kind placed in or around the convention center, including hotels, will be removed and you may be asked to leave the show. Your badge will be revoked, and you will not receive a refund.

Badge registration

Where can I buy a badge? Badge sales open soon and will remain open until the convention closes on June 23! Badges can be purchased through Tabletop.Events. Instructions for purchasing a badge on TableTop.events can be found HERE.

You can also purchase badges onsite at the convention center. Just go to the registration area in the North Atrium (near the corner of Goodale and High Street) and look for the onsite registration line. Please note that we have moved to a cashless system for registration, which means we are only able to accept credit cards for badge and event ticket purchases.

How much are badges? Badge prices vary by badge type and day. To see the full list of available badges, visit Tabletop.Events.

What does my badge include? Origins Game Fair badges cover almost everything you would want to do at the convention, including admission to the exhibit hall, seminars, workshops, concerts and the Open Gaming Area with a board game library of more than 1,000 games. In addition, most events offered are included with your badge, with a few exceptions for premium events that have an upcharge to cover materials, prize support or special guest GM/presenter. These premium events will be noted in the event catalog so you know what event have an extra fee. Our goal is to fill your days with plenty of opportunities to get to a table, and leaving the majority of our events free to participate is one way we hope to do that.

Attendees should be aware, that certain specialty badges do come with restrictions (IE: TCG Badge) and may not include everything listed above, so be sure to check the description of the badge you’re purchasing.

How do I pick up my badge? You will pick up your badge at the Columbus Convention Center in the registration area, located in the North Atrium (near the corner of Goodale and High Street). If you have registered in advance you will be able to pick up your badge from the “Scan and Go” area of registration.

Do I have to wear my badge? Attendees are required to wear their badge at all times. Your badge grants you access into show areas. If you do not wear your badge, you will be denied entry.

What do I do if I lose my badge? PLEASE DO NOT LOSE YOUR BADGE! Unfortunately, we cannot offer replacement badges. If you lose your badge you will need to purchase a new badge.

I’m having some difficulty with Tabletop.Events! Tabletop.Events does offer many helpful instructions and videos. If you’ve found you can’t

manage to accomplish what you need to, or if you can’t find the answer to your questions, please e-mail registration@gama.org.

Why are my user name and password not working? Please follow the username and password recovery options on Tabletop.Events

Do you offer game clubs, educators, library or military discounts? Unfortunately, we do not currently offer discounts on our badges, other than our Early Bird discount. If you are looking for a discounted badge or potentially even a free badge, please consider volunteering to help make the show happen. Those who pay it forward by volunteering receive free badges for helping out as little as four hours a day. LEARN MORE ABOUT BECOMING A VOLUNTEER

How do I buy a Child Pass? We raised the age limit for the Childs Pass from 9 years to 12 years of age to allow for more family members to attend at no extra costs. To buy a Child Pass, you must first have a badge in your cart for an attendee age 16+. While the system has a default $2 charge for the child’s pass, if you click the hyperlink it will insert a code to waive the fee. If you have any questions about this, please contact registration@gama.org for assistance PRIOR to purchasing your badges.

Can I use cash at the show? While we do not accept cash at the registration booth to purchase badges or event tickets, cash will be accepted in the exhibit hall, food vendors and at the Origins Game Fair merchandise booth.

How can I get a refund on my Origins 2024 badge? Refunds on badges purchased for 2024 are available from the Tabletop.events (TTE) website through April 19, 2024. All refunds are subject to a 10% service fee to cover the credit card and TTE fees from both the original purchase and the refund. There will be no refunds after April 19, 2024.

Premier Badge

How many hotel rooms can I reserve as part of my early access benefit? All hotel reservations are subject to restrictions set by the individual properties, but typically the limit is two rooms per reservation. Check with the property you’re interested in for more details.

Will my events tickets also be mailed? Any event you register for prior to the mailing deadline (May 1, 2024) will also be mailed to you. Any event added after that date will need to be picked up on-site as in previous years.

Events

How do I participate in an event?

• You must have a badge to attend or register for an event. You may have the badge in the cart at the time you register for an event and check out for both at the same time if you have not already purchased your badge.

• When you print your badge, tickets for the events you have registered for will also print.

• If you are registering for events after you have already printed your badge, the full-service registration desk will print your tickets for you!

When can I register for an event? You can register for an event from the time event registration opens until the time the event starts. Event tickets will print with your badge.

6 ORIGINS Site Book 2024 FAQ

New in 2024: After you print your badge you can go to the Self-Service, Scan & Go to print any tickets purchased after you get your badge.

If regular events are now included in my badge, why do I need event tickets? Most scheduled events have limited seating and can only accommodate a specific number of players. People who reserve event tickets will be seated first. Should an event sell out, you can still stop by the event to see if a seat opened up. If there are remaining seats at the start of the event, the GM will seat those waiting to play.

What are generics (generic tickets) and how do I get them?

Generics are tickets that can be used to buy a seat in an event after players with purchased event tickets have been seated. Generic tickets will be available at Registration. Please note that as a majority of scheduled events are included in your badge price, you will only need to use generics for upcharge events (free events do not require generic tickets). Should an event sell out, you can still stop by the event to see if a seat opened up. If there are remaining seats at the start of the event, the GM will seat those waiting to play.

How do event ticket refunds work?

Refunds for event tickets are given up to 24 hours prior to scheduled event time, or if an event has been canceled. If the event is canceled, the event ticket must have the signature from staff at the Event HQ in your area to be refunded.

NOTE: All refunds are subject to a 10% service fee to cover the credit card and TTE fees from both the original purchase and the refund.

Health and Safety

What is Origin’s COVID-19 policy for 2024? Origins Game Fair is not requiring masks or proof of covid vaccination to attend Origins 2024. However, please be aware that if either the Centers for Disease Control or state/local governmental organizations require us to change this policy, we will do so to comply with governmental rules.

Are weapons allowed at Origins? Real weapons and weapons resembling real weapons are not allowed at Origins. Cosplay weapons must be cleared by convention security and peace bonded. Visit the Help Desk near registration or the Security Office directly outside of the Exhibit Hall in the Main Concourse. Replica weapons purchased in the Exhibit Hall must be immediately secured in the purchaser’s vehicle or hotel room.

What is peace-bonding? We utilize zip ties to mark items as safe and inspected. Once we have zip-tied your item, you are not permitted to remove it. Security will have zip ties on hand at the show. Visit the Security Office directly outside of the Exhibit Hall in the Main Concourse to peace-bond your item.

Are wheelchairs available?

The convention center has a limited number of manual wheelchairs available. They are stored at Public Safety Command. If you (or someone you know) needs a wheelchair, contact Public Safety directly at (614) 827-2547. A member of Public Safety will bring the wheelchair to you. You will be asked to exchange a photo ID for the wheelchair, which will be returned to you when you are done using the chair.

Is there a lost and found? If you have lost an item or find an item during the show, please visit the Help Desk nearby Registration. If possible, found property will be returned to the owner. Any items not claimed will be left at the Security Office and brought back to the Origins office after the close of the show.

Volunteers

If I want to volunteer should I buy a badge? Please do not purchase a badge if you expect to receive one as a reward for volunteering at the show! A volunteer badge will be assigned to your Tabletop.events account after the approval of your volunteer hours. Any badges purchased before receiving your volunteer badge will be subject to the refund fees laid out during the registration process above.

What is required of an Origins Volunteer? All volunteers are expected to be courteous, professional, and eager to help, in addition to the specific responsibilities outlined for the shifts they sign up for. All volunteers must submit to a background check. Learn more in the Volunteer Handbook.

Can my child volunteer? Due to insurance and the requirement of a background checks for all GAMA volunteers, we require all volunteers to be over the age of 18.

Can I sign up on-site? Unfortunately, we cannot accept volunteers onsite at Origins Game Fair. All volunteers must sign up in advance to allow for a background check and be placed in an area to work.

Families

Are children welcome at the show? Absolutely! As a family-friendly show, Origins welcomes gamers of any age. Children twelve and under can attend the show for free with an accompanying guardian. Children thirteen and old must be registered for a badge.

Do you provide childcare? Unfortunately, no. We don’t have the ability to offer these services. Parents/guardians are responsible for looking after any children in their care while attending Origins Game Fair.

FAQ

FIRST TIMER Advice

1. Don’t over-extend yourself. The GCCC is large and there is a lot to do at Origins Game Fair. You can’t see everything, so just enjoy what you can. Make sure you get a good night’s sleep and take breaks throughout the show.

2. Stay Hydrated. Water is important! When you feel thirsty you are already dehydrated. Keep a water bottle handy and refill it regularly.

3. Ask Questions. GAMA Staff, volunteers, GMs and exhibitors are all here to help! We are happy to answer questions and if we don’t know the answer, we can point you to someone who can. All of us were first-timers once too, and a few of us are first-timers right along side you! There is also a Help Desk located near registration, ready to answer all your questions!

4. Check Out the Game Library. The Origins Game Library has more than 1,300 games for you to check out and play with your friends (or total strangers!) included with your badge.

5. Check out the events list. Take a little time to look through the events list on Tabletop.events. There are so many amazing events,

most of which are included with your badge. You can usually find a seat at a seminar, and even events that are full can have seats free up. If you really are interested in an event, don’t be afraid to swing by the location at the start time to see if anything is available.

6. Try Something New. It can be tempting to stick to games and activities you are familiar with. With so many events included with your badge, Origins is an amazing opportunity to try something new with no risk! Look for “Rules will be taught” designations in the event list or just walk the gaming hall and look for open seats!

7. Exhibit hall demos are fast and informative. Want to experience the most games with the most flexibility? Exhibitors run tons of awesome demos throughout the show. Get a quick feel for a new game without committing to playing for hours.

8. Don’t miss the back rows of the Exhibit Hall. The big publishers tend to be toward the front of the Exhibit Hall. They have amazing displays and incredible products to try, but don’t forget about the smaller/independent publishers and designers farther back. Your new favorite game may be hiding back there right now!

MATT Leacock

2024 Inductee

I made the switch to designing board games full time in July of 2014, a dream job for me since I was a little kid. Prior to that I was a user experience designer working primarily in community and communications products for companies including Apple, Netscape, AOL, Yahoo!, and Sococo. Throughout my entire career, I designed games in my free time.

I specialize in family games and have become known for cooperative games since the success of Pandemic (2008) and Forbidden Island (2010). Despite this, I love playing and designing all types of games, gravitating to those that can be played in less than an hour and keep everyone engaged until the very end.

I work as an independent designer and license my work to publishers around the world.

JONATHAN Coulton

Jonathan Coulton is from the Internet.

While a struggling music industry fell to pieces over file sharing and shifting business models, he quietly and independently amassed a small army of techies, nerds, and dedicated superfans. Featured in the New York Times, NPR and slashdot, his songs cover an eclectic range of subjects, from zombies and mad scientists to marriage and parenthood.

MUSICAL GUESTS

In concert he moves fluidly between pathos and ridiculous fun. Seeing your first Coulton show is like walking into an insider club meeting, but one that gleefully welcomes and indoctrinates you in short order. 2d6

Larry XL

Larry XL is a featured performer at the Borgata Casino in Atlantic City. In 2012 Larry XL made his acting debut appearing in the film Elf-Man starring alongside Jason Acuna (from MTV’s “Jackass”), Mackenzie Astin and Jeffrey Combs (Re-Animator).

Since starting out in Baltimore in 2003, Larry XL has been performing in many area venues and hitting the road performing in some of the nation’s best comedy clubs opening for the likes of Bobby Slayton, John Witherspoon, Jim Florentine, Don Jamieson, Roy Wood Jr., Finesse Mitchell, and Charlie Murphy. He has also been heard on XM Satellite Radio and Baltimore’s 98 Rock.

Grant Lyon

Described by San Francisco Weekly as “a hilariously sharp observer, not one of those tired white-guy bellyachers,” Grant was once a collegiate soccer player. He decided to pursue a career on stage instead of on the field, and that decision’s been rewarded by being chosen as a New Face in comedy at the Just For Laughs Festival, winning the Laughing Skull Comedy Festival, and being a finalist in the Big Sky Festival.

He’s appeared on Comedy Central, Comics Unleashed, SyFy’s series The Movie Show, and he starred in the Amazon Prime feature film Killer Kate! In addition, he’s been a guest on the nationally syndicated Bob and Tom Radio Show and on numerous popular podcasts including Doug Loves Movies. “Scheduled Fun Time,” his comedy album with 800 Pound Gorilla records, hit number #1 and has been featured on numerous SiriusXM channels.

As well as being a contributing writer for the Huffington Post, the film he wrote and starred in, Interview Date, was eligible for a short film Academy Award. Funny or Die, MSN, Huffington Post, and others are among the sites that have featured Grant’s sketch videos on their home pages. You might also recognize him from a number of national commercials including AT&T, Johnsonville Sausage, CiCi’s Pizza, Sam Adams and more.

His debut board game, Curmudgeon, came out in 2020, published by 25th Century Games. A huge lover of board games, Grant hosts a weekly series on his YouTube channel called Grant’s Game Recs, short and funny videos about good games.

Violet Gray

Violet Gray has been doing standup at Fantasy, Sci-Fi and gaming conventions for over 10 years. While she loves performing in mainstream clubs like the DC Improv or the Strand in NYC, she especially enjoys conventions, where she can tell the jokes she wants to tell to nerds that share her interests!

Davine Ker

A trilingual stand-up comedian and multidisciplinary artist. Her art emerges from thought-provoking jokes, left-field concepts, and unique storytelling that bridges culture, comedy, and music. She headlines throughout the DC area and also performs as a feature comedian in comedy clubs and festivals from NYC to LA and Montreal, Canada. Credits include: International Lady Laughs Comedy Festival, Moth StorySlam winner, Funny Bones, Comedy Nest, Kennedy Center and Amazon Prime.

HALL OF FAME

Celebrate The 50th Anniversary of the Academy of Gaming Arts and Sciences 50th

Anniversary!

Game design is a very old field, dating back to games such as Senet in ancient Egypt. What gaming means to everyone has evolved over the years. When the Hall of Fame first started in 1974, War Gaming was a very big part of the field. A few years later Role Playing Games came onto the scene. This was followed by an explosion in tabletop board gaming, then by Trading Card Games, Cooperative Games, Deck Builders, and many more categories as well as unique games that do not fit into any mold.

Competitive puzzling is the newest genre of events added to the over 5,000 tabletop games, role playing games, LARPS, miniatures, film festival, anime and other events hosted during Origins.

Like last year’s event, any full show badge holder can add the puzzling events to their schedule. There will also be a special badge for those interested that will secure them a place in the three championship events.

Other highlights among the dozens of planned events include 100- & 200-piece solo sprint events, a wooden puzzle sprint, puzzle chess, seminars on speed puzzling and much more. Any Origins Game Fair attendee can register for any of the puzzling events, including the three main events.

The winner of the three main events will secure their entry fee into the next USA Jigsaw Puzzle Nationals, held in 2026.

“I heard great things about last year’s Tournament of Pieces,” SpeedPuzzling.com founder and Tournament of Pieces host Jonathan Cluff said, “I’m excited to bring a variety of additional contests to this year’s event, and we expect a larger turnout and even more fun for everyone this year at Origins!”

Cluff has hosted hundreds of events since 2019, both in-person and online, and helped create the USA Jigsaw Puzzle Association.

Those interested in attending Origins Game Fair to take part in the Tournament of Pieces can get more information or purchase a badge at OriginsGameFair.com. Tournament of Pieces events will be available to register on May 4 at 1pm, ET.

If puzzling is all you’re looking for, the Tournament of Pieces badge is the best option for your Origins Game Fair experience! You’ll secure your spot in those four featured events, as well as the ability to register for other puzzling content and access to the exhibit hall floor.

TRUE DUNGEON

Founded in 2003, True Dungeon is a life-size, immersive, role-playing experience played in a walk-through dungeon environment. It combines elements of escape rooms, haunted houses, and its rules are very loosely based on the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons. Individual players test their gaming skills in an adventure where they battle monsters, solve puzzles, and overcome mental and physical tests of skill.

All of these challenges come together to make the True Dungeon experience unique in the gaming industry. In addition to puzzles, players do battle (via a shuffleboard-style combat board) with animatronic monsters and costumed NPCs.

Not a LARP, True Dungeon instead focuses on problem solving, teamwork and tactics while providing exciting sets and interactive props. Players may find themselves creeping down a dark passageway and entering a longforgotten crypt. After dispatching a lurking guardian, the players may have to solve a cryptic puzzle or find a secret door in order to access a wondrous treasure chest. This might be a chest

that holds a shocking surprise if opened without care. It takes two hours to explore the dungeon, and teams of ten players need only bring their imagination and quick wit.

No prior D&D or gaming experience is needed. In fact, a party with an array of different experience levels usually does well. This is a perfect vehicle to let some non-D&D gamers experience the fun and thrills of dungeoneering.

True Dungeon Returns to Origins Game Fair in 2024

True Adventures, Ltd. is very happy to announce our return to the Origins Game Fair June 19th-23rd, 2024 in Columbus, Ohio. In this first year back, we will be presenting a new four-room “Con-Quest” adventure entitled “The Golden Obelisk”.

The exciting event shares the quality and

fun of a 7-room dungeon, but it is presented in a four-room “sealed pack” format (with a free pack of Treasure Tokens included). It features the same high-quality sets, props, effects, and costumed performers as our standard adventures but in a shorter time frame and at a much-reduced cost. Tickets are $48, and they will be available starting on January 21st, 2024 at the TD Ticket website. Each ticket comes with a free 10-pack of Treasure Tokens and a limited-edition Rare Participation Treasure Token.

“The Golden Obelisk” adventure tasks the party with finding a mysterious obelisk to help unlock an ancient secret.

NOTE: Table signs are allowed, floor banners are not.

SPEED PITCHING

Want the opportunity to show your game design off to multiple publishers in a short window of time? Our Speed Pitching events could be for you! We will have an In-Person Speed Pitch event. Interested designers must submit their games for consideration using the form HERE.

All submissions must be received by Friday June 7 at 11:59 PM EDT (GMT -4). Selected designers will be notified by Friday 6/14.

PRO-AM GAME JAM

Stretch your creative muscles in this game design exercise. Unpub makes a random set of restrictions for a game design: for example, what theme your game has to involve, what kind of genre your game must be, or a twist in what the game can’t involve.

Game industry pros will lead their teams of Origins attendees to make a game and playtest it. Then at the end of the game jam period, each team will present what they came up with, and compare just all the different directions the same restrictions can go.

We look forward to seeing you all in Columbus soon!

SEMINAR: WAR COLLEGE & ORIGINS UNIVERSITY

Hosted by the national security decision-making game

Our Seminar track is designed to promote thoughtful viewpoints and civil discourse on historical and contemporary gaming topics. We hope you will enjoy our presentations from both professional and talented amateur “relative” experts. Our goal is to provide thoughtful and entertaining options for your consideration.

Special Note: Unless otherwise stated, the views expressed in these events are those of the participants, not their employers or the event organizers.

Where Today’s Scenarios may be Tomorrow’s Headlines

The National Security Decision Making Game (NSDMG) is an intense face-to-face immersive multiplayer seminar roleplaying game. Players represent large social, industrial, political and military groups in real-world nations experiencing major domestic and international challenges where their interactions/ negotiations with others drive world-changing events.

The in-depth knowledge of the staff regarding military, political, economic and social aspects of world events allow for believable and exciting play. In these games, player decisions make a difference -- no outcome is inevitable.

NSDMG provides a synthetic learning experience where participants can gain insights into the basics of international relations AND experience some aspects of the governance, culture and circumstances impacting how other nations work. You can’t buy NSDMG in a box - it is a face-to-face event and each instance is a unique experience.

Here’s the game: “You players are politicians. You over there, you’re the Cabinet. You folks in the corner are the military leadership. Here’s your country; you’ve heard of it, it’s real and so are its challenges. Here are the real issues. Here are some big, looming problems. Fix them. Start now.”

“And oh, by the way... you all have different agendas. Good luck with that.”

NSDMG is a challenging simulation of strategy and geopolitics providing insight into cultures, political processes, geopolitical situations and challenges of nations around the world. It is modeled after simulations used by senior U.S. Government

officials to explore geopolitical options. NSDM originated at the U.S. Naval War College and has been presented at a variety of venues including universities, government installations and hobby conventions.

NSDM is part seminar game and part live action role playing. Each player occupies a role in which he or she can affect the formulation of national policy in their country. Players receive instruction from an international control staff that includes former game directors from the War Colleges, personnel with experience in Departments of Defense, State and Energy, and subject matter experts from private industry and academia. We can simulate over 23 nations, each with unique political, economic and security issues. Every game offers an interesting experience as well as an opportunity to experience the world from the perspective of another political system and culture.

No two games are alike.

The NSDM team will also be supporting the Origins War College with lectures, seminars and panels on contemporary and historical topics. Check the Origins War College schedule for details.

MINIATURE PAINTING COMPETITION

MINIATURE PAINTING COMPETITIONS

Location: 1st floor, Exhibit Hall B.

The Origins Miniature Painting Competition strives to inspire new painters to learn more about painting, and to provide an atmosphere which encourages learning, and the sharing of techniques.

This is an open format competition with awards given based on merit. Open Format awards ribbons based on level of skill, regardless of the total number of entries in the whole competition. While there is still an element of competition between painters, the primary goal is to reward painters for their existing level of skill and help give them a measurable goal for improvement from year to year.

JUDGING CRITERIA

Each entry will be awarded points by a team of 3 in a judging panel, with the points weighted based on category requirements. For example: In the single figure category, pieces will be judged on difficulty, creativity, workmanship, painting skill, and overall presentation, but painting would be the primary consideration. In the Open category, while painting would still be important, workmanship would play a larger role than in the single figure category.

The judging panel for each category will consist of three judges and one standby judge. The standby judge will assist as needed to break a tie in the event of matching scores for the “Best in category/show” awards.

The judges will use scorecards to score and critique the entries. The limit is ONE entry per category. The score card will be given to the entrant when their entries are being picked up.

All entries will be judged based on five criteria:

• Difficulty - Complexity of the piece and of the techniques used, be they painting, sculpting, design, or composition.

• Creativity - Use of innovation and implementation of new or unusual concepts, techniques, color schemes, arrangements, and added details. Newness and appropriate use of creative elements are important.

• Workmanship - Judges will be looking for technical precision in cleaning, preparation, and construction. Thorough removal or resurfacing of flaws in the piece, seamless joints, wellconstructed base, or diorama elements, clean and modelappropriate modifications, and precision in original sculpts.

• Painting Skill - As this is a painting competition, this is very important to all categories. Judges will be evaluating the techniques used, and the overall effect achieved. For example: subtlety in shading, crisp details, high contrast, etc.

• Presentation - Overall effect of the piece and use of elements within to create a cohesive display. Judges will be looking for unity of style between elements, use of color to good effect, appropriate use of highlights and shadows, and whether the piece maintains the “mood” or “tone” throughout.

CATEGORIES

Single Figure: For this category, entries will be judged primarily on the technical painting skills. Overall presentation, workmanship, creativity, and difficulty will play a much smaller role. Scale of single models that can be entered into this category can be any scale up to 53mm.

• Difficulty - 5%

• Creativity - 10%

• Workmanship - 10%

• Painting Skill - 70%

• Presentation - 5%

Large Figure: For miniatures that are large in size, vehicles, and 54mm scale and above. For this category, entries will be judged primarily on the technical painting skills. Overall presentation, workmanship, creativity, and difficulty will play a much smaller role. Models that would be included in this category would also be monsters and dragons.

• Difficulty - 5%

• Creativity - 10%

• Workmanship - 10%

• Painting Skill - 70%

• Presentation - 5%

Bust: For this category, entries will be judged primarily on technical painting skills. Overall presentation, workmanship, creativity, and difficulty will play a much smaller role. A scratch sculpt entered in Bust would not be scored based on the quality of the sculpting, but on painting alone. If you would like to be judged primarily on the sculpting, it is recommended to enter the piece into the Open category. If that is the case, please be sure to let the competition registration know ahead of time so that we can make sure that the piece goes to the right place.

• Difficulty - 5%

• Creativity - 10%

56 ORIGINS Site Book 2024

• Workmanship - 10%

• Painting Skill - 70%

• Presentation - 5%

Diorama :In the diorama category, the whole piece should tell a story. While painting skill is one of the primary considerations, much more emphasis is placed on presentation and creativity as it pertains to the piece and how it manages to tell a story.

• Difficulty - 5%

• Creativity - 20%

• Workmanship - 20%

• Painting Skill - 25%

• Presentation - 30%

Unit: Units should have a clear theme and it should be obvious that they are part of the same group. Units should be attached to a single base for transport. Figures must be secured to the base using sources such as glue, blue tac, white tac, or magnets to prevent damage. Painting quality and workmanship should be consistent throughout the unit. If displayed on a decorative base, the base should be of a similar quality to the unit and should be appropriate to the theme of the unit.

• Difficulty - 10%

• Creativity - 10%

• Workmanship - 20%

• Painting Skill - 40%

• Presentation - 20%

Display Only: To put a piece into the competition case with the intention of just publicly displaying the work and/ or to receive critique via in person discussion by one or more of the judges.

6. Disqualified entries forfeit all prizes, titles, and awards. The painter is barred from entry in future Origins Competitions. Awards are given to the next winning entry. Information that may result in disqualification should be brought to the attention of Origins and Competition Administration immediately.

7. All entries must be finished and based. Management determines the final category placement of all entries and can change before or during judging with no notification to the entrant.

8. Entry size limit - 12 inches in width, 12 inches in height. Models too large for display cases may be refused.

9. Entry registration indicates permission for Origins to photograph entries and show them in all public media both online and print.

10. Origins Staff, crew members, and Competition management cannot be held responsible for lost or damaged minis.

11. Gama & Origins Employees, Origins Competition Management/ Administration, are not eligible for entry. Judges are eligible to enter but CANNOT judge the categories that they enter.

12. All decisions of the judges and management are final.

13. Entries must be received by 4 PM on the Saturday of Origins June 22nd, 2024 in time for judging preparation.

14. Entries and Prizes must be picked up by 3 PM the Sunday of Origins June 23rd, 2024, If we receive no replies to our attempts to contact you by phone or email by closing time, prizes will be forfeit and entries still in our possession will be auctioned for charity by Origins.

15. You must pick up your entries in person or sign a release form allowing your entries to be picked up by a specific person if you will not be able to pick up your own miniatures. We will be checking IDs and badges.

WINNERS LISTS AND JUDGE’S FEEDBACK

The Winner’s List is posted the week after Origins or sooner if possible. Feedback from the judges that were entered in the system will also be emailed out to entrants during the week after Origins. If there are judges available after the awards ceremony and Sunday pickup, you may ask about feedback then as well.

Additional Information: If you have additional questions, please email Duff@Impendingduff.com

VOLUNTEERS

Origins wouldn’t exist without our team of volunteers! Thank you so much to our amazing volunteers for all their hard work making this convention what it is.

Our volunteer team puts in over 5,000 combined hours of work to bring Origins to life. Many volunteers have been with us for years and we hope much more to come!

Origins Volunteers help with the operational areas of the show. From printing badges in Registration to helping GMs in the Gaming Halls, there are a lot of ways to get involved behind the scenes. There are incredible rewards for our volunteers, so check out the Origins Game Fair website for more information about volunteering next year.

If you are interested in volunteering, please contact Cynthia Tuck (Events Coordinator) at cynthia.Tuck@gama.org.

FAMILY AND QUIET ROOMS

QUIET ROOM

Origins Game Fair is a fun-filled and exciting event, but we recognize that conventions can be overstimulating for a lot of people. Our quiet room is for attendees to take a break from the noise and excitement of the convention. While all are welcome, the purpose of this space is to have a safe place for anyone who needs a break, such as nursing people, folks with sensory sensitivities, migraines, or individuals on the autism spectrum.

Please keep the following rules to ensure a respectful and relaxing environment for all:

• Please keep conversations to an absolute minimum.

• Please silence all electronic devices, including cell phone ringers and notifications

• If you have to make or take a phone call please take it outside the quiet room.

• Nursing parents are welcome, but this is NOT a play space for children.

• You may rest your eyes, however this room is not intended for naps.

• Small snacks are ok (except peanuts). Please avoid snacks with strong smells or noisy wrappers

• Scents such as perfume and cologne should be avoided.

• Be sure to put away any puzzles or other activities, so they’re available for the next person.

• Please take away any discarded items you do not need, such as empty drink containers

FAMILY ROOM

This new area at Origins is for spouses, partners and parents with small children to hang out in, away from the hustle and bustle of the main convention. The room is filled with great family games donated by our sponsors, free for all to enjoy.

Please note: Under no circumstances can children be left at the Family Room without parental supervision.

FAMILY PAVILION

New to the Exhibit Hall this year is the Family Pavilion! Play fun family-focused games or just catch your breath as you explore the hall with your younger family members.

Please note: Under no circumstances can children be left at the Family Pavilion without parental supervision.
