2023 Record Place The New..
The Windmill Management and Board of Directors is always looking for ways to improve the customer experience and upgrade the facility and grounds of the market. In 2022 the Northwest Street of Shops was identified as an area that needed improvement. The shops in this area were getting tired, and some were not handicap accessible.
Director of Operations Steve Wilson conceptualized his vision for the project, a “small town streetscape,” and his daughter, Celeste Wilson Moles of Form 180 Design Firm, laid it out on paper. The design was brought before the Board and was approved.
The former Northwest Street of Shops was razed in Fall of 2022 and that fall and winter the new project took shape and, with the help from many local contractors, was completed prior to opening
day in April 2023. On opening day, local officials, along with the Yates County Chamber of Commerce, and Windmill staff and merchants, dedicated the new building with a short ceremony and ribbon cutting.
Windmill merchant and past president Mary Record has tirelessly served The Windmill for many years, so the decision was easy to dedicate the building in her name, 2023 Record Place. Merchants and customers of Record Place now enjoy beautiful, climate controlled, handicap accessible shops.

Windy Acres Farm
Local Community Staple, New Collaboration
In August 2023, Steve Wilson and other investors in our local community, including The Windmill Farm and Craft Market, purchased Windy Acres Farm. Windy Acres Farm was established 23 years ago by Ivan Hoover, one of The Windmill’s original merchants. The farm store, plant nursery and greenhouses are located just south of The Windmill on SR 14A. Wilson, The Windmill’s director of operations and managing member of Windy Acres Farm, is excited to bring both businesses together into “one destination, two locations in
TheWindmill.com 54
the heart of the Finger Lakes.” He added, “We will honor the Hoovers’ legacy as we look forward to new opportunities that will benefit our local community.” Collaborating with The Windmill will give customers of both organizations the opportunity to find everything they need, from handcrafted artisan work to fresh, local produce to beautiful plants and flowers.
Windy Acres Farm offers a wide variety of fresh seasonal produce, flowers, trees, shrubs, gardening supplies, fresh baked goods, with much more promised in the future. “We are just getting started,” said Wilson. “After a very busy ‘off-season’ of many repairs, maintenance and renovations, we are excited to welcome our customers to our farm store and greenhouses.” We are also looking forward to providing our customers with fresh, locally grown produce by working with other area farmers to supplement the produce we are growing right here on our 80-acre farm.
Other community members also have an optimistic view of how
the acquisition will strengthen the Finger Lakes community. Chelsea Race, director of marketing for the Yates County Chamber of Commerce, had this to say on the acquisition: “The purchase of Windy Acres Farm will give The Windmill visitors an even deeper understanding of local agriculture. The ability to shop local on a working farm is something everyone should have a chance to do while living or visiting in the Finger Lakes. It’s truly a full circle experience.”
Past President of The Windmill’s Board of Directors, Mary Record, added that the collaboration between these two iconic destinations should enhance the experience for both locals and visitors. We are exploring ways to build on the Windy Acres Farm legacy and hope to make both locations easily enjoyed as a unified experience for years to come.
Make sure to stop by Windy Acres Farm when visiting the Finger Lakes Region and experience a family-friendly atmosphere and farm-to-table produce.
55 The Windmill Visitors Guide 2024
History of The Windmill
In 1978, Bill and Ruth Gunderman, and Pat Gunderman and her husband, Ron Nissen, took a trip to Ephrata, Pennsylvania, to visit a farm market. They were enamored with the concept and decided that one day they would attempt to create a similar market in Yates County.
In 1986, Ron, Pat, Bill and Ruth began talking over the concept of a farm and craft market with many of their English and Mennonite friends. In February 1986, a meeting was called and 80 people showed up. An initial plan was formulated; with enough interest a steering committee was formed to search for a location. A 26-acre site between Penn Yan and Dundee located on route 14A was chosen.
On June 27, 1987, we opened our doors with 64 vendors in two enclosed buildings, 25 outside vendors and lots of enthusiasm. The next Saturday, July 4, was even more successful than opening day. Traffic was backed up for 5 miles
in each direction as people were trying to get into the market. What a thrill it was that our dreams of a farm and craft market had become a reality.
In 1988, a third enclosed building and an open produce shed were erected. We received a New York State grant that was awarded to construct sidewalks, concrete floors and restroom facilities. In 1995 an additional 7 ½ acres were purchased to provide additional parking.
From 1997 to 1999, more outside vendor buildings were erected. In 2004, a New York State Matching Fund grant was awarded to enclose the produce area and former hay auction barn thus making more permanent inside vending areas.
Bill designed many of the buildings at The Windmill. He was also a member of the Board of Directors and held the position of treasurer for many years. Pat was the first president, served on the Board of Directors, held the office of treasurer after her father’s retirement and functioned as the market manager for six years until her retirement in 2001. She has been active as a market consultant ever since. When asked what he was going to do at the new market Ron Nissen said, “I’m going to
TheWindmill.com 56
sell hot dogs; people are always hungry.” Ron later served as market manager for many years and helped set up several other markets.
In November 2001, Bill passed away. He is still considered the “father of the market” and is greatly missed by his family and his many friends. To quote Bill: “During all of the years of operation, there have been many devoted persons who have put countless hours of time in
the operation of the organization. The dedication and patriotism to the market has been outstanding. Hundreds have given their talents unselfishly and the credit for the success belongs to all of them. The Windmill crew did not invent marketing nor did they reinvent it; instead they took most of the good features of other markets and molded them into “The Windmill concept.”
