L E T T E R S More Harps I enjoyed Kari Anderson’s article about harps. My grandmother, Christine Carr Minor, lived in Batavia and played the harp professionally. She traveled all over the east with her harp in a specially built trailer, to sing and play at schools.

Ms. Anderson’s mention of the difficulty of transporting a concert pedal harp reminded me of my grandmother’s stories, which she wrote down in later years.

I don’t recall her mentioning playing at a big concert in Syracuse, but that is where she bought her harp.

Following Pre-emption Road to Freedom Your article about the Underground Railroad was great. I’m not a scholar on this subject and never delved into it, but I would like to pass along to you some things about it that my grandmother told me when I was a youngster.

Her name was Cora Tripp and she and my grandfather lived on a huge farm on the Pre-emption Road. This road played a big part in the traverse of the slaves from the south, bound for Canada and supposed freedom.

In the days of the surge to freedom by the slaves, one has to remember that there were no paved roads. Buggies, wagons and horseback were the modes of travel. Grandmother Tripp related that there were well-planned stops and feeding places all along the trail to the north, and that the farm where they lived was a stopover, which supplied fresh horses and one outbuilding used to repair wagon and buggy wheels.

The Pre-emption Road, in part, still exists. It came up through Pennsylvania and was a straight trail to Sodus Point, New York, where sailboats awaited to (Continued on page 5)

take the slaves across Lake Ontario to Canada. This road, at that time, went through the virgin timberlands and afforded well-hidden travel away from the cities and large villages. The road went north near Dundee and north of Bellona to merge into what later became Route 14. You can see on a New York map that it is very straight to Sodus Point.

Bob Tripp, Arkport Greek Revival Revisited The recent article on Greek Revival homes of the Finger Lakes is a wonderful testament to the architecture of our area. The homes selected are beautiful examples and most of the photographs are exquisite. I would like to express my disappointment in some of the information in the Greek Revival article in the recently published winter edition of your publication. The location of one the prime Greek revival home in the area, Rose Hill Mansion, is Route 96A, not East Lake Road. More directly related to me however, is the fact that the Kime Farm House, although originally built as such, has not been owned by the Kime family for a number of years. John and Nancy Warder purchased the house over 25 years ago and have restored it to its current condition. It is still owned by the Warder family, a prominent family in Geneva.

The family also had no idea that their home would be featured in the article in your publication. This article shows a wonderful example of the Greek Revival homes of the Finger Lakes. It also shows a relative lack of professionalism and research by your staff.

Sandy Wagner, Geneva Your Winter 2007 Issue covered several Greek Revival homes in the Finger Lakes area, but omitted one that is also very noteworthy. The home was built in 1828 by Nehemiah Platt, an early settler of the Nichols area. About 1855, a Dr. George P. Cady moved to Nichols from Massachusetts. Late in 1856 Dr. Cady married Susan Platt, daughter of Nehemiah Platt. With the death of Nehemiah Platt having taken place in 1851, Doctor and the new Mrs. Cady soon moved into the Platt home. During 1865, they had a son, George M. Cady II. At about that time, the Cady Mansion, as it was then known, had some structural enhancements. A porch with Greek Revival columns was added. Also, another frame addition was built to the rear of the original house. Dr. G.M. Cady II resided there until his death in 1935. Upon his passing the Cady Mansion was left to the town of Nichols for use as a public library, as it is today.

On October 13, 1976, the Cady Mansion and the coach house were listed in the National and State Register of Historic Places. In 1988, a matching grant was applied for and received from the New York State Office of Parks and Historic Preservation. The grant and local match, totaling $479,400, covered significant restoration of both the mansion and the coach house. The funding also provided for the nearby coach house to become the Town of Nichols offices.

I hope your readers add the Nichols Cady Mansion to their appreciation of Greek Revival architecture and the preservation of these stately structures.

I can’t tell you how much I look forward to each issue and I share it and read it from cover to cover. Which brings me to my comment/feedback. I do not like the address showing on the front. I would much prefer it on a wrapper or on the rear of the magazine. I leave this out at my desk for others to look at, but feel a little strange about having it showing my home address. So, I blot it out with a permanent marker. It takes away from the beauty of the cover! (I love the picture of the cardinal in the Winter 2007 issue. It’s perfect.)

Linda Slade, Hemlock Believe me, Linda, I feel the same way you do regarding that big white box on the front cover. Unfortunately, our options are few. We cannot place the address on the back cover because it’s reserved for advertisers. I have considered mailing the magazine in a polybag (the mailing label would be on the bag, not the magazine), but it’s too expensive at the present time. We have glued mailing labels to the front cover. That became a disadvantage on humid summer days when the labels came off in the actual mailing process.

So for now, we’re stuck. I’m glad you like the covers enough to comment on our situation. We continue to look for an alternative.

N E W S B I T S New, Earlier Date for Historical Start of Commercial Wine Production Contrary to the usual accounts of winegrowing in the Finger Lakes, Samuel Warren of York, Livingston County, was the first successful commercial wine producer in New York State.

An 1836 advertisement in the recently digitized New York Evangelist establishes that Warren was marketing his own York wines before the 1839 founding of Blooming Grove (now Brotherhood Winery) in Washingtonville, until now thought to be the first commercial winery in the entire state.

Warren, who came to York from Herkimer County in 1816, produced his first vintage in 1832. Wine production reached more than 3,400 gallons in 1853. The York Wines story comes as a surprise not only to town of York residents, but to wine historians Thomas Pinney and Hudson Cattell, with whom the York Historical Society has been in contact. Historians across the state have not challenged the claim that York Wines was first. The Town of York Historical Society recently purchased the Warren homestead and hopes to restore and responsibly develop it. For more information, visit YorkHistorical.org.

Schuyler County Farmers Win Award Arcangeli Farm/Country Critters in Burdett was recently named the winner of the 2008 “I Love My New York Farmer Award” in the “Other Livestock” division. In their nomination, the Schuyler County Chamber of Commerce described farmers John and Marjorie Arcangeli as true givers to the community, citing that they’ve hosted free tours to hundreds of youth groups, like the Girl and Boy Scouts and after-school programs and that John had served in the volunteer fire department until injury prevented him from continuing.

The “I Love My NY Farmer” awards are judged by NY Farms!, a state-wide coalition that promotes local farms and food systems primarily through “buy local” campaigns. Recipients are selected based on their history of living and selling within New York State, producing a quality product, being a good steward of the land, being a good neighbor, serving the community and “going the extra mile.”

Family of Local Winemaker Shares Books The Konstantin Frank family has donated 132 books formerly belonging to Dr. Frank to Lee Library at the New York State Agricultural Experiment Station and various libraries on Cornell’s Ithaca campus. The collection is composed of 19th and 20th century titles on a wide variety of topics including horticulture, plant science, viticulture, enology, chemistry, nature, history and literature with the largest single subject category being wine- and grape-related material.

When Dr. Frank emigrated from Europe to the United States in 1951, he sacrificed all other luggage and brought only his precious collection of books. The collection includes texts in English, German, French and Russian. Numerous handwritten notes, illustrating Dr. Frank’s views on grape varieties and various vineyard practices, makes the collection of special interest to researchers.

The proceeds of every sale at New Unto Others go to the Spiritus Christi Mental Health Center, a local nonprofit that provides free mental health care to uninsured and underinsured adults and children.

The mission of Spiritus Christi is to improve community health by providing those people with access to consultations and medications free of charge from its all-volunteer staff of nurses, therapists, doctors, counselors, social workers and advocates.

Plein Air Artists Gearing up for Historical Art Show The Genesee Valley Plein Air Painters (GVPAP) will be hosting a first-time, historical plein air (produced outdoors in natural daylight) art show in the John Wehle Art Gallery at the Genesee Country Village and Museum, opening in May. GVPAP has been working on this project for about a year, holding more than 60 on-site painting sessions, called “paintouts.”

GVPAP member Barbara Jablonski attended the annual Finger Lakes paintout, which drew 13 plein air painters to the shores of Seneca Lake for three days in October. She said the group “enjoyed great weather, amazing locations from which to paint, great camaraderie and last but not least, great food.”

The painters stayed at the Rainbow Cove Resort in Himrod. Jablonski said the resort offered beautiful views of Seneca Lake and praised the food and service. The group made painting excursions to Wagner Vineyards in Lodi, the Watkins Glen Marina and Montour Falls.

At Watkins Glen Marina, Jablonski said they were “dazzled by the boats and sparkling waters of the lake, and of course the quaint Seneca Lake boat house out on the long dock, which inspired many in the group.”

The following morning they went to Montour Falls, first to see Tumbling Waters, then to Havana Glen to paint. She said, “All of us found inspiration along the graceful falls at Havana Glen. Many of us spent the day there, developing our compositions. We ate our lunches in the gazebo nearby.” The painters enjoyed dinner at Seneca Harbor Restaurant both nights and spent their evenings at Rainbow Cove enjoying wine, music, and conversation with friends around a bonfire.

The Landmark Society and the Rochester chapter of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) are partnering through a public survey effort to raise awareness of recent-past architecture. If you have a favorite mid-century building in the area or know of a landmark in your neighborhood that was built between 1930 and 1970, they want to hear about it.

“Ironically, the buildings we’re now looking at cataloging and preserving are the ones we initially fought against,” said Rebecca Rowe, preservation program coordinator for the Landmark Society. “It is a brave new world in preservation where we must shift our thinking on these places from the archi-trash of urban renewal to the next generation of historic structures.”

The AIA survey marks the need for a mindset change for both the preservation community and the general public, since neither group is likely to perceive everyday structures as historically significant.

This simple-to-make meal belies its flavor complexity, textural mix and “impress factor.” Created by Eric K. Smith, chef instructor at the New York Wine & Culinary Center in Canandaigua, these three recipes feature ingredients available locally now and throughout the spring and summer. always welcome the chance to cook duck. Any chef will tell you it’s the fat that makes it interesting. The flavor is really intense, and it can get very hot without burning. Upscale restaurants deep-fry their French fries in duck fat. For this meal, in fact, we use it to oven-roast red potatoes.

The fat on a live duck is designed to protect it from the cold, so there’s a lot of it. When I prepare duck, I score the fat, even though the breasts come pretty well trimmed from the butcher. It allows heat to permeate through. Duck is one of the few proteins that I start in a cold pan to render the fat slower and more fully.

Thanks to its sweet peach/hot pepper combination, the chutney is a perfect pairing with the duck’s unique, rich flavor.

Pan-Roasted Duck Breast

Peach and Scotch Bonnet Chutney (to be made one day ahead of time)

4 to 6 duck breasts 4 to 6 cloves of garlic, finely minced 1 large shallot, finely minced 4 sprigs of fresh thyme, picked leaves kosher salt fresh cracked black pepper

4 peaches 1 to 2 Scotch bonnet peppers (they’re small but they pack a big punch) 1 to 2 tablespoons raspberry wine vinegar 1 to 2 tablespoons canola oil kosher salt fresh cracked black pepper Remove the pits from the peaches, chop them a few times and place the pieces into a food processor. (If a food processor is unavailable, chop by hand – it will just take a little more time). Remove the seeds from the peppers and dice as finely as possible. Don’t touch anything afterward until your hands are thoroughly washed – the spicy pepper juice stings. Add the peppers to the peaches in the food processor along with the vinegar.

Pulse a few times, adding the oil slowly. Season with the salt and pepper to taste.

Refrigerate until serving. When presenting, place a small amount of chutney on each cooked duck breast.

Generously season the duck with kosher salt and fresh cracked pepper, and place in a cold sauté pan fat side down. Choose a pan in which the duck breasts fit into evenly without touching each other. Turn burner to high heat and cook for about 8 minutes, then turn to medium-low and cook for an additional 12 minutes, or until the fat is golden brown and you see the

Oven-Roasted Red Potatoes 1 to 1-1/2 pounds red skin potatoes 3 to 6 cloves of garlic reserved duck fat kosher salt fresh cracked pepper 2 sprigs of fresh thyme, picked leaves

duck starting to cook up the sides.

At this point, it’s about 80-percent cooked.

Flip the breasts over, then top with the garlic, shallots and fresh thyme.

Strain the fat and reserve for OvenRoasted Red Potatoes (see next recipe).

Place the duck on a plate to cool.

Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

Quarter the potatoes into wedges and place in a large mixing bowl. Chop or press garlic into the bowl. (If you use a press, add a little more to make up for the flavor that is left in the press. A little extra garlic flavor never hurt anybody.) Add enough of the rendered duck fat to coat the potatoes very well and season generously with the kosher salt, fresh cracked pepper and the picked thyme leaves. Toss the potatoes and mix well.

Place potatoes in a single layer on a large baking dish. Bake for 45 minutes, then remove from the oven and place the duck breasts on top of the potatoes. Put the whole dish back into the oven and cook for 5 more minutes. Let the duck breasts rest for 5 minutes then slice thin.

n an effort to meet my extended neighbors, I took a ride from Ithaca to Ulysses to visit BWW Farm, named after the three original owners in the 1800s: Bates, Walker and Wertis. Earlier in the week I had received a call from John Wertis inviting me to his farm to meet his goats. Realizing I had never been to a goat farm nor had a farmer ever invited me to a farm, I thought this might be an interesting way to spend a Friday afternoon.

John Wertis is a former middle school teacher. He taught the sciences for over 35 years and retired in the late 1990s. In addition to goat farming, he also serves as treasurer of the Empire State Meat Goat Producers Association (ESMGPA), a New York State goat breeders’ organization that provides a forum for goat breeders and buyers alike to exchange ideas and information on breeding goats.

John has run BWW Farm for almost a half a century. He had been a dairy farmer when his children were young but decided to stop raising cows because of the amount of work. “Forty years ago, we were raising dairy heifers, buying 2- or 3-day-old female calves from farmer friends and raising them until they were ready to calve themselves.”

Raising Goats for Meat It is only within the past five years that John and his partner, Marian, have acquired goats. They first purchased 25 doelings from a healthy herd in Spencer. With the help and training of a Cornell Animal Science Professor, Tatiana Stanton, who lives down the road from BWW Farm, they were able to acquire more. Professor Stanton mentions several advantages of having goats – their small size, which makes them easy to handle and less risky to raise, their low initial investment and their versatile eating habits.

Pat Rini Rohrer John pointed this out to me on my farm visit: goats are indeed not particular about what they eat, but they do know their hay. As I was feeding them, John explained to me that the goats consume different kinds of hay; I was feeding them from last season’s third cutting. I noticed the goats seemed more eager to eat this season’s recent cutting, which was softer, greener and even had some alfalfa in it. The older goats receive just hay and water, while he gives the kids a combination of medicated pellet-food, corn and minerals to ensure they grow strong and healthy.

John and Marian work together to care for more than 50 goats and manage the farm. They are one of four farms raising meat goats on their road. Fifteen to 20 of BWW Farm goats are “this year’s crop of kids, now 6 months old,” John notes.

“Our basic herd has about 35 moms, each 4 to 5 years old.” BWW Farm is also home to several young and older bucks.

Goat is the most consumed meat in the world because of its price and availability. In New York, the sheep and goat industry provides “full or supplemental income for more than 3,600 farmers, many of whom reside in economically depressed areas of rural New York. Meat goat production has become a common livestock enterprise (in New York),” said Professor Stanton.

Some meat goats are known as Boers. The Boer goat was developed in South Africa in the early 1900s for meat production; Boer is Dutch for farmer. “Not all meat goats are Boers,” John tells me. “Some are Kikos, Spanish Goats, and there are others, too.

Boers are the most prevalent now, producing the meatiest carcasses.”

Making More Goats When asked about breeding, John explained the importance of keeping the male and females separate. On Halloween, John and Marian let the males and females commingle, with the hope of having several kids in the

spring. Does of every breed come into heat every 21 days for two days. Since John keeps his does and bucks separate for most of the time, they are ready for each other’s company. Gestation is around 150 days, and the kid goats are typically born in the spring, the perfect time to become accustomed to their surroundings. Most does give birth to twins, and birthing is generally uncomplicated.

The Cornell Small Farm program estimates there are 3 million acres of idle land that could be used for pasture and hay in New York State. John Wertis alone owns 90 acres of farmland. Recently, he has begun a new venture – sharing a portion of his land with an organic farmer who sells his harvest to local restaurants. Farmers often lend the use of their land to others for minimal or no cost for esthetic and tax relief reasons, Professor Stanton notes.

Driving around John’s property made me look at farm life differently.

Certainly I was aware that farming meant a lot of work, but what I didn’t understand is that farming is a lifestyle and a major life-altering commitment.

When I asked John if he and Marian ever get to take a vacation, he laughed.

“Marian or I can sometimes sneak away for a few days, but we can never leave the goats.”

I left BWW Farm with a general appreciation of the work of the farmer.

Despite my previous encounter with these goats – when they chased me down the road during my morning run, I had discovered that they were not scary beasts to avoid, but rather the livelihood of many people who lived near me. Spending time with John, Marian and their goats opened my eyes to a different kind of living and to different kinds of neighbors.

Hammondsport T

he historic village of Hammondsport is tucked between rolling wooded hillsides at the southern end of Y-shaped Keuka Lake. The village was part of a tract of land purchased by Captain John Shethar in 1796. It eventually passed into the hands of Lazarus Hammond and came to be known as Hammond’s Port – later changed to Hammondsport.

Reverend William Warner Bostwick planted the first cuttings of grapes (Catawba and Isabella) in this area in 1829. Thus began the tradition of grape growing and wine making that have made Hammondsport famous as the winery capital of New York. Hammondsport is the site of U.S. Bonded Winery No. 1.

Hammondsport is also the birthplace of pioneer aviator and inventor Glenn H Curtiss. Curtiss was born May 21, 1878. He came to be known as the “Father of Naval Aviation” and many of The Genundowa Celebration in the his historic flights took place over the Hammondsport Village Square fields surrounding the village or above the waters of Keuka Lake.

Tourists and locals alike enjoy Keuka Lake for swimming, boating, sailing and any number of other water sports. Parks along the shoreline are great for picnicking and hiking. Fine restaurants and lodgings also attract many people to Hammondsport. (continued on page 24)

Art in Nature The Frank J. Ludovico Sculpture Trail

I

t is not too difficult to find a trail for hiking or biking along a canal in the Finger Lakes region. Locating one where nature and fine art coexist would seem much harder. In Seneca Falls, however, the Frank J. Ludovico Sculpture Trail on the south side of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal offers just such a venue. Over the past 10 years an abandoned railroad bed has been gradually transformed into a scenic trail with original sculptures. Against the striking natural backdrop, eight three-dimensional artworks have been created in a variety of artistic styles. Their themes are linked with Seneca Falls and include the development of the Women’s Rights Movement, the use of the canal for transportation, and industries founded in the area.

“Amelia’s role was neglected in women’s history,” explains sculptor Cherry Rahn in reference to Amelia Bloomer (1818-1894), the subject of the second sculpture, which was installed on the mile-and-a-half-long trail in 2001. Rahn, a Geneva-based sculptor, had heard of the

19th century feminist, perhaps best known for the provocative loose trousers she wore under her skirts, which were later christened “bloomers.” Amelia Bloomer participated in reform movements and was the nation’s first female newspaper publisher. The Lily, which began in 1848 in Seneca Falls, became a voice for advocates of women’s interests.

The start of the trail Wilhelmina Pusmucans was the mastermind behind the sculpture trail and invited Rahn to create the Bloomer statue. Pusmucans arrived in Seneca Falls from Buffalo in 1991. After opening a gallery in a 150-year-old home on Cayuga Street, the longtime art lover raised the ire of some residents in her adopted community when she installed two sculptures in her front yard. She was allowed to keep one and then turned to a local realtor for help in finding land for more sculptures. Finally in 1998, former local businessman Frank J. Ludovico, now of Las Vegas, donated a strip of

land that was once a Lehigh Valley railroad bed.

The Frank J. Ludovico Sculpture Trail Inc., a not-for-profit corporation headed by Pusmucans, was formed, and the formidable task of clearing the land of brush, roots and trash got underway. The trail opened in 1999 at the south end of the Bridge Street bridge in Seneca Falls. The wide, level path, which dead-ends at Sucker Brook, overlooks a stretch of canal between Cayuga and Seneca Lakes that is used by boaters in the summer.

Originally, the sculpture trail focused primarily on presenting the theme of Women’s Rights through works created by women artists. “Traditionally, sculpture is a male-dominated art form,” asserts Pusmucans.

“Women sculptors don’t have opportunities to exhibit their work.” Trumansburg artist Betty Boggs created the trail’s first sculpture, The Status of Women. On two large tablets a carved chain links six symbols, representing the right to vote, the right to hold property, the first Women’s Rights Convention, the right to higher education, equal pay for equal work and fair and equitable divorce laws.

Wine, women and pumps In 2005, the sculpture trail gained a towering metal abstract figure called Bacchus, created by another woman artist, Hyon Telarico of Waterloo. Representing the mythological god of wine, it offers a link to the area’s wine industry. Rather than a single form, the sculpture consists of several metal forms outlining a standing figure with raised arms, which represents the goodness of the god. A sitting or crouching figure represents the overindulgent side of the wine god and a goblet at the base of the figures completes the composition. The open spaces of this 30-foot-tall sculpture allow trail-users a largely unobstructed view of the landscape.

Another sculpture represents Seneca Falls’ history in the making.

Diana Smith, who was elected mayor of Seneca Falls in 2004, became the subject of a bust by Richard Musso in 2006. “She is the first female mayor of Seneca Falls, the birthplace of women’s rights,” notes Pusmucans.

The trail’s most recent addition, unveiled in October 2007, is Goulds Pumps: Working Man’s Alchemy, a tribute to Goulds Pumps, one of the area’s major employers. A senior programmer/analyst at ITT/Goulds Pumps, Audrey Iwanicki, participated in an employee art show at Syracuse’s Everson Museum, which led to her selection as a trail sculptor. “Pump Man,” as Iwanicki refers to the central figure of her large assemblage, is 8 feet tall with a mechanical torso and humanlike face and hands. Actual Goulds Pumps’ parts – casings, impellers, discharge heads and motor adapters – have been fashioned into limbs and accessories surrounding the figure.

Iwanicki learned welding to create the work and cast the pieces in a Syracuse University open studio sculpture course. The work is appropriately installed in a clearing across the canal from where the Goulds’ Fall Street plant has stood for 100 years.

Keeping it going The development of the sculpture trail has seen its share of struggles. Initially, there was resistance from some adjoining property owners as well as some outright acts of vandalism. The need to raise funds is a constant chal-

lenge. Pusmucans’ vision, however, has not dimmed.

Trail upkeep, opening more of the trail and adding new sculptures continues. Pusmucans wants to introduce a trail map, add more signage for each sculpture and provide additional gran-

ite-hewn benches where people can rest and reflect. While some of the sculptors have donated their work, there is always considerable cost for materials and fabrication, so Pusmucans and the friends of the Frank J. Ludovico Sculpture Trail have frequently turned their energies to fund-raising and grant writing. Bricks inscribed with a donor’s name have been put at the base of some sculptures. Since 2001 there have been three books published as fundraisers: Cookie Cutter Caper, illustrated with “bloomer” cookies decorated by artists; From the Painter’s Palette to Your Palate, with artists’ illustrations of recipes; and Cobblestone Houses of Seneca County in Art Form.

Another title on Seneca County wineries is in development. Swedish Hill Winery in Romulus has bottled a Cayuga White wine with a Ludovico Sculpture Trail label and gives a percentage to the sculpture trail.

Old World Meets New Finger Lakes Winemaker Morten Hallgren

ucked away on the eastern shore of Keuka Lake, Ravines Wine Cellars prefers to remain a bit hidden. This relatively new boutique winery is not officially part of the Keuka Lake Wine Trail and does not attract tasters who are on a guided wine tour. The tasting room facade exhibits a simple yet elegant style that is reminiscent of Mediterranean architecture but is subdued enough to look right at home in the Finger Lakes. Within, winemaker and owner Morten Hallgren and his wife, Lisa, pour samples of their European-style wines. Hallgren’s modest demeanor does not reveal his tremendous winemaking background; only his slight accent betrays that he may hail from somewhere other than New York State.

From France to the Finger Lakes Indeed, Hallgren may have one of the most uniquely qualified wine backgrounds of all Finger Lakes entrepreneurs. Born in Denmark, Hallgren’s family moved to southern France after purchasing an ancient winemaking estate in the Provence region.

Named Domaine de Castel Roubine, this estate had been producing wine since at least 1307. Throughout his childhood, Hallgren learned and honed his winemaking skills, helping his family produce a variety of wines for which the Provence region is known.

Despite this experience, Hallgren decided to pursue a career in science and came to the United States to study astrophysics. Hallgren met Lisa, a native of Texas, during his college years, and the two married in 1990.

He returned to Europe, and Hallgren soon realized that winemaking was his true calling. In 1992 he enrolled in the famous Ecole Nationale Supérieure d’Agronomie in

Montpellier, France, to become an oenologist. As part of his graduate internship, Hallgren worked at Chateau Cos d’Estournel in the Medóc region of Bordeaux. While in Bordeaux, Hallgren met a group of Texas vineyard owners who were touring the region.

Eager to return to the United States and enter the wine industry there, Hallgren took a job in 1995 as the head winemaker at Cordier Estates near Fort Stockton, Texas. Within a year, Hallgren and his wife moved to North Carolina, where Hallgren became the head winemaker at Biltmore Estates.

As Hallgren became more familiar with the United States wine industry, he ruled out taking a job in the warm and prestigious growing regions of California.

“I believe that cooler climates produce balanced, food-friendly wines,” Hallgren reveals. “California wines can be great as stand-alones, but some are too intense

and one-dimensional.”

Ironically, Hallgren had not heard of the Finger Lakes until the early 1990s when he stumbled upon a bottle of Dr. Frank’s Riesling at a small wine shop. Impressed with what he tasted, Hallgren kept a close eye on the Finger Lakes wine industry and was recruited in 1999 by Dr. Konstantin Frank’s Vinifera Wine Cellars to be their head winemaker.

Another winery is born After gaining experience with the Finger Lakes growing climate at Dr. Frank’s, Hallgren and his wife founded their own winery on the other side of Keuka Lake in 2002. Ravines is a boutique winery that produces only 5,000 cases a year. Hallgren employs time-intensive winemaking techniques that virtually exclude large-scale production.

the grapes he uses are picked by hand.

Methods such as whole-cluster press, punch downs and cold soaks allow for the gentle extraction of juice with a longer exposure to the skin and other elements that enhance the flavor of each wine. To create his Chardonnay, for example, Hallgren uses a technique called passito, in which he selects the finest grapes to dry on trays for four to seven weeks. Passito concentrates the flavors of the grape, yet Hallgren controls the residual sugar by employing this method for only 20 percent of the grapes used in the total wine. The result is a dry Chardonnay with a significantly enhanced floral flavor.

Low yields are a source of pride for Hallgren, who can be found during and after the harvest literally plunging into in his grape batches, utilizing only his hands or a simple bucket to manipulate the perfect amount of exposure between

juice and skins. Hallgren’s dedication to the whole-cluster press, gently using the weight of the grapes to extract juice, requires constant diligence and yet only produces about half as much wine as larger operations, which employ a crusher/destemmer machine. “I want to make the most of each and every grape,” Hallgren explains. “The quality of the wine is much more important to me than the quantity.” Hallgren is adamant about never adding sugars of any sort to his wines as part of his commitment to making dry wines in the European style.

For the 2006 vintage, Hallgren pushes his winery into the future with Ravine’s first bottling of a sparkling wine employing the methode champenoise.

Comparing the Finger Lakes climate favorably to that of the famous Champagne region, Hallgren remains excited about the prospect of sparkling wine in

the Finger Lakes. “This is one of the best regions in North America for sparkling wines!” he states emphatically. “I think there is a great future here.”

Reds and sparkling wines ahead Despite the challenges of the cool Finger Lakes growing climate, Hallgren is optimistic about the potential of the area. “Many of the celebrated wine regions in Europe are actually cool climates by definition. Burgundy, Champagne, even Bordeaux are cooler climates than many of the New World growing regions.” While he admits that whites are more easily suited to the Finger Lakes, Hallgren is convinced that reds do just fine. “I have to work really hard for the reds. Reds here can have a refreshingly balanced fruit taste with fine tannins, but the mid-palate can be lacking. Each red I produce has to be handled very, very carefully in order to excel.” Hallgren’s enthusiasm for his Meritage, Pinot Noir, and Cabernet Franc is evident in the tasting room, and it is with these reds that Hallgren believes he has truly demonstrated his winemaking skills.

As the owner of a young winery in a young wine region, Hallgren looks to the future as someone who has experienced the industry in a more ancient setting.

“In Europe, dozens of generations of winemakers have been able to focus on what works in all kinds of conditions,” he says. “Most vines in the Finger Lakes are still first-generation, and we only guess at the qualities of the terroir based on shortterm observations. ometimes an inspiration will come to me while I’m in the shower. One morning not long ago was one of those times. While some people may sing or whistle, I just let my mind wander in the hope that an intriguing topic will somehow make its way through all that steam.

That morning one did.

The Adirondack region has its well-established Adirondack Museum in Blue Mountain Lake, which celebrates the area’s cultural history, craftsmanship and lore. There’s also the brand-new Natural History Museum of the Adirondacks, a.k.a. The Wild Center, in Tupper Lake. It showcases live exhibits dealing with Adirondack environment, fish and wildlife.

In the Finger Lakes, however, no comparable institution exists. To be sure, we have museums: the Museum of Glass, for instance, and the Rockwell Museum of Western Art, both of which reside in Corning. The Finger Lakes Boating Museum is currently housed at the Glenn Curtiss Aircraft Museum in Hammondsport. We can’t forget the Rochester Museum and Science Center in its namesake city. There are many more in this area, yet we have no cultural or natural history museum to focus attention on one of the most beautiful, ecologically diverse and popular regions of New York State. My idea is a combination of the first two Adirondack museums I mentioned: The Finger Lakes Cultural and Natural History Museum.

Back to the shower My first impulse was to dry off and run this idea past Mark Stash, the editor of Life in the Finger Lakes magazine, which I did. Mark was instantly receptive and asked for some time to discuss the proposal with his colleagues, which he did.

In the meantime, I contacted Elizabeth (Betsy) Lowe, who conceived the idea for The Wild Center along with some friends on her porch overlooking Long Lake. The potential is endless Exhibits could celebrate Native American culture and early colonization, and feature the histories of agriculture, viniculture and commerce in the Finger Lakes region. They could include antique boats and farm equipment. I would like to see an immense freshwater aquarium to display the variety of fish species that inhabit the Finger Lakes. A taxidermy exhibit could illustrate native wildlife species, and a special exhibit could showcase the Seneca White Deer.

Each of the Finger Lakes could be individually represented, and perhaps a special presentation on Canadice and Hemlock lakes might be included. There could be an art and photo gallery to exhibit the talents of past and present regional artists, and an auditorium for media presentations, along with a bookstore. And these are just my thoughts. How about having the historical societies from the 14 counties that comprise the Finger Lakes region, and colleges and universities located within those counties, submit their own proposals for cultural and natural history exhibits?

A lot is involved in planning a museum. There is fundraising. There is a business plan. There is site selection. There is master planning. There are public meetings. There are meetings with groups, organizations, legislators and community leaders. There are architectural and exhibit designs. There is marketing.

There is incorporation. There is financial management. There is accreditation by the state Board of Regents. There are committees. There are consultants.

There are lawyers and accountants. Of all of these, fundraising is the most important component of a project like this.

Mark Stash and Life in the Finger Lakes magazine have enthusiastically endorsed the idea and offered to promote it. I would like to see how much public support there is. I would like to see how much business support there is as well. A well-planned museum has the potential to become an important tourist attraction, further enhancing the Finger Lakes region as a destination.

rom her parlor window, 33-year-old Elizabeth Cady Stanton looked across the canal to the industrial district of Seneca Falls. In the 1840s, a string of 60 mill and factory buildings stretched from her neighborhood to downtown along the Seneca River. Most prominent was the gray limestone Seneca Woolen Mill. The women who worked for the mill at that time typically received half the pay men did for the same quality and amount of work. Blatant inequality was pressing down on 19th-century American women, right outside Stanton’s home.

At that time, a married woman was only one person away from poverty. A husband was the best protection against the poorhouse. A wife could work outside the home, but her salary was a fraction of a man’s, and the money was

not her own. She had to turn it over to her husband, whose rightful property it was.

For the most part, a woman couldn’t inherit or own property, including the clothing she wore; women could not sue in court, serve on juries, vote, or gain custody of her children. Most colleges of the day did not admit women. Worst of all, a woman could not divorce an abusive husband.

My children and I learned all this during a wonderful private guided tour of Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s home. The tour was free; we just had to make prior arrangements to have the doors unlocked. Our docent, a park service ranger, told us “the rest of the story” gleaned from her own research of Stanton, the woman who drafted the Declaration of Sentiments that defined the first Women’s Rights Convention.

Wife, mother, activist Before she and her husband moved from Boston to Seneca Falls, Stanton lived in a fine house. In comparison, her Seneca Falls residence was modest, a composite home created from two relocated houses. As a child, Stanton enjoyed the pampering of 19 servants who took care of the family’s home in an affluent Johnstown, New York, neighborhood. In Seneca Falls, Stanton had to care for her 3-year-old, 2-year old and 18-month-old children alone. She found small-town life oppressive and finally came to understand what the female factory workers had been dealing with all along.

“I pace up and down these two chambers of mine like a caged lioness, longing to bring nursing and household chores to a close,” she said. “My duties were too numerous and varied and none sufficiently exhilarating or intellectual to bring into

play my higher facilities. I suffered from mental hunger, which like an empty stomach, is very depressing.”

All in all, Stanton bore seven children and spent 15 years in her Seneca Falls home, now restored and managed by the National Park Service. “Elizabeth Cady Stanton’s life purpose was realized right here,” our guide told us. “While staring out of this window, she decided to dedicate her life to women’s rights. She ran her household in relation to reform.

She would bring young women here to talk and help them gain the confidence that was needed to hand out fliers and give speeches about women’s rights.”

The first Women’s Rights Convention drew 300 supporters to the Wesleyan Methodist Chapel on Fall Street. The Declaration of Sentiments presented there was patterned after SPRING 2008 ~

the Declaration of Independence. It boldly proclaimed, “All men and women are created equal.”

Stanton became one of the most important and persistent leaders of human rights in United States history.

“I wanted to do and dare anything,” she admitted. It would take 72 years of battles before the 19th Amendment gave women the right to vote, 55 years after slavery was abolished. But in 1848 in central New York, a sweeping reform blazed through villages, towns and cities like a prairie fire.

As we listened to our enthusiastic guide and learned the remarkable beginnings of women’s rights, my heart swelled with gratitude for these women.

I knew it was the right decision to undertake this field trip with my 17-yearold daughter, Sierra, and my 15-year-old son, Bryce. As a woman and a mother, I have often contemplated: How can we appreciate what we have today if we are not aware of who fought for it in the past? I wanted to teach my daughter about freedom, her rights and having control over her own life. I wanted her to know the battles her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother waged so she could live a better life. My son needed to learn about those who came before almost as much as Sierra. That’s why we went to Seneca Falls.

Preserving the legacy Before visiting Stanton’s home, we visited the Women’s Rights National Historical Park Visitor Center on Fall Street. In the lobby, an impressive exhibit called “The First Wave” consumes you. You can walk among the 20 life-size bronze statues depicting the women’s rights activists who participated in the first Women’s Rights Convention.

A very moving and inspirational film entitled, “Dreams of Equality” is a great way to get acquainted with this fascinating interactive museum. The displays prompt the visitor to ask the questions: What are rights? How do we

get them? Who decides who gets them?

Who defends them?

There are televisions set up where you can listen to young people give their views on these topics. You can watch clips from TV shows and cartoons and read advertisements that helped to create a warped image of women in society. We learn that a 17inch waist was the ideal in the 19th century. To achieve that ridiculously tiny size, women would wear tight, uncomfortable corsets. Overall, the displays give our young people a sweeping history of the progress of women coming into their own.

From the Visitor Center we walk over to Declaration Park and the stabilized remains of the red brick Wesleyan Methodist Chapel. The entire text of the Declaration of Sentiments and the list of 100 men and women who signed it cascade as inscriptions down a 100-foot granite â&#x20AC;&#x153;waterwall.â&#x20AC;? I try to imagine being a participant then, and am stirred with emotion on these very grounds.

The first convention was the catalyst for the womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rights movement, and caused a ripple affect across the nation. Local newspapers that covered the event tried in vain to squelch the movementâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s progress. The Syracuse Daily Star referred to the convention as a â&#x20AC;&#x153;mass of corruption, heresies, ridiculous nonsense, and reeking vulgarities which these bad women have vomited forth for the past three days.â&#x20AC;?

In my free 21st century mind, I can hear the quote and find humor in the words. The convention was threatening the very fabric of the domineering existence of the man who wrote them. I can only imagine the fire that rose in those womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s hearts that day in Wesleyan Chapel.

Another fascinating stop in Seneca Falls is the National Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Hall of Fame, which was established 38 years ago to honor contributions of American women. Housed there are photographs, stories and exhibits about the women

The chapel was well known as a haven for antislavery activity, political rallies and free-speech events. The original red brick building was sold by the congregation in 1871 and extensively altered by subsequent owners. When it was purchased by the National Park Service in 1985, very little original fabric remained.

who have been honored over the years for their contributions to the arts, athletics, business, education, government, humanities, philanthropy and science. We wandered the halls, pausing at some the 217 profiles that personally inspired us, like Eileen Collins, the first American woman to pilot a spacecraft, and Shirley Muldowney, the first woman to win a national hot rod event. Harriet Tubman, Susan B. Anthony and Juliette Gordon Low are honored there, alongside contemporary women including Madeline Albright and Hillary Clinton.

Throughout the village of Seneca Falls are bronze statues and monuments that bring the women’s movement to life. One piece in particular on the south side of the Cayuga-Seneca Canal is a car stopper. It portrays the first time Elizabeth Cady Stanton and Susan B. Anthony met. Amelia Bloomer, in her progressive and controversial pants, is introducing the two.

Rochester From Seneca Falls, we traveled to Rochester and the home of Susan B. Anthony, who was co-founder with Stanton, of the American Women’s Suffrage Movement.

simple red brick home, located on Madison Street. An ornamental entrance on the porch invites you into this museum and historic home, but the third-floor attic had the most impact on me. It served as the workroom for the national headquarters of the Women’s Suffrage Movement.

For 40 years of her life, Anthony lived in this home, now a National Historic Landmark. Next door, where her sister Hannah lived, is the museum’s Visitors’ Center. A massive $2.5 million capital campaign to restore Anthony’s house was undertaken nine years ago, making possible all the interior and exterior restoration that has taken place in the last four years. The goal was to return the home to the way it looked the last time Anthony lived there in 1906.

Every detail was considered, including the replacement of the asphalt roof with red cedar shingles.

Anthony was well known for her hand-written correspondence and didn’t hire a secretary to type for her until she was older. In the third-floor workroom, the black typewriter and inkwell still sit on Anthony’s desk. Oversized black-and-white photographs of the pioneering women working in their full skirts and white blouses line the dark

Sculptor A. E. Ted Aub, a professor at Hobart and William Smith Colleges in Geneva designed the sculpture of life-size figures of Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Susan B. Anthony and Amelia Bloomer as a lasting memorial to three history making women.

The house was a very active place with volunteers coming and going constantly – writing brochures and letters, campaigning, propelling the country forward into reform. I can imagine the energy and excitement that must have emanated from these rooms.

The house is filled with memorabilia and the early Victorian furniture of its occupants. We learned that Anthony took a cold bath every morning until she was 80, when she was finally convinced to use warm water. Anthony’s original bedroom furniture remains, including the bed in which she died.

“You stir up Susan, you stir up the world.”

Anthony was brought up in a Quaker family known for its activist traditions. Her noble ideas of fairness and moral right came from her father; his mills would only purchase cotton from plantations that did not use slave labor.

Anthony campaigned for the abolition of slavery, along with a woman’s right to own property, control her own earnings and form labor organizations.

She knew if women could vote, they could get laws changed and right some of these wrongs.

She watched as the Civil War ended and the 13th Amendment set slaves free. The 14th defined citizenship. The 15th allowed former slaves to vote, but not women. She had worked side by side with colleague Frederick Douglass to end slavery, but when she approached him about the gross injustice being done to women, he said, “One step at a time.” She was so frustrated she felt ready to explode. It caused a temporary rift in their long friendship.

A great team Susan B. Anthony worked with ally and friend Elizabeth Cady Stanton for 50 years. Stanton was the philosopher and writer, Anthony, the researcher and instigator. Together, Stanton and Anthony wrote the speeches that Anthony

would deliver as she traveled throughout the country. Stanton had told Anthony, “If you stir the pudding and hold the babies, we can work together.” To Elizabeth’s seven children, she became known as “Aunt Susan.”

In 1872, Anthony encouraged women to go out and vote; she believed they were designated as citizens according to the 14th amendment.

When voting day came, she wrote to Stanton telling her, “I’ve done it. I’ve voted. I’m so excited!”

Two weeks later, she was arrested for breaking the 14th and 15th Amendments, but she was not jailed and was furious about it. “I wanted to be treated like any other criminal.”

Her act of civil disobedience, however, attracted national attention and support. She stood trial in Canandaigua several months later, and the judge ordered the jury, without deliberating, to find her guilty.

Anthony and Stanton died before they could see their work accomplished. Forty consecutive sessions of Congress shot down the 19th Amendment, but many younger women were inspired and carried the dream forward. At her 86th birthday celebration, one month before her death, Anthony delivered a rousing speech to women in Washington, D.C. She assured these torch carriers that “With women such as these … dedicated to the cause, failure was impossible.”

Fourteen years after Anthony’s death in 1906, their mission was accomplished.

My daughter left the Anthony home and gift shop with a purple T-shirt tucked proudly under her arm. A quotation from Anthony, written in script, adorns the front: “Failure is Impossible.”

fter a cold, gray upstate New York winter, we crave the sunshine that marks our spring and summer days. Rain is the intruder then, and most of us lament cloudy skies. Others

Part 1 – In The Beginning Story and photos by Bill Banaszewski This is part one of a four-part story about the land surrounding the Finger Lakes and the wildlife and people who inhabited it. While many details are based on research in Livingston, Ontario, Yates and Tompkins counties, the story is representative of the entire hilly landscape of the region.

L

ooking out across Keuka Lake from my deck to the expanse of heavily wooded hillsides visible in all directions, it is hard to comprehend how these same hills surrounding Keuka and the other Finger Lakes have changed from mature forest to farmland and are now reverting back to forest in less than 300 years.

For uncounted centuries dense primeval forests covered a vast area from the Great Plains to the Eastern Seaboard. In the Finger Lakes region a canopy of vivid green comprised of hardwoods and conifers in the higher elevations blanketed the landscape. The lush vegetation was virtually uninterrupted except for clearings created by lakes, wetlands and

fire. The branches, leaves and needles were so plentiful, they formed a tightly woven shield preventing most of the sun’s rays from reaching the forest floor. It was a time when the land was enveloped in stillness, broken only by the natural sounds of wildlife, the roar of thunder, wind or water. Soon, startling new sounds would join the natural spectrum, for it was time in the Finger Lakes for a significant change agent to make its presence felt.

Most mainstream scholars estimate the time of the founding of the Iroquois Confederacy between 1000 A.D. and the mid-twelfth century, and many tie it specifically to a solar eclipse on August 31, 1142. When the Seneca Indians arrived in the Finger Lakes region, they initially established their settlement near the south end of Canandaigua Lake near exceptional hunting and fishing grounds.

The Senecas are one of the original Five Nations of the Iroquois Confederacy, the Haudenosaunee. Within the Confederacy, the Senecas are known as “the keepers of the western

door,” but their own name for themselves, O-non-dowa-gah, translates to “people of the great hill,” a reference to their origin story. Over time, they migrated north to Canandaigua, the Seneca word meaning “the chosen spot.” It is difficult, if not impossible, to estimate the maximum population of the Haudenosaunee prior to European contact. Numbers cited vary widely and range from 5,000 up to 25,000 or more.

The entire Seneca culture was based both on a spiritual and knowledgeable relationship with the earth, its plants and animals. From oral history we know they believed human happiness was only possible through a spiritual relationship with the natural world. Plants and animals were their allies, and they succeeded as farmers or hunters through the favor of supernatural deities.

The Senecas were the first dwellers in our region to commit a large portion of the land to agriculture. They cleared the forest by girdling trees and using fire. By most estimates, as much as 90 percent of the land was forested before they began to establish farmland. Mother Earth, together with the women, owned the farmland, and women were solely responsible for planting and harvesting apples, squash, beans, sunflowers and corn. In some years over 100,000 bushels of corn were harvested.

Equally important as agriculture to the Senecas was their relationship with wildlife. They believed bear, wolf and eagles were supernatural creatures. All animals were considered intelligent fellow members of the same spiritual kingdom.

The whitetail deer, beaver and turkey were the most useful of the game they harvested. Beaver and turkey were trapped, and deer were taken by still-hunting, stalking, using snares and, when deer were abundant, by driving.

Knowing that deer did not thrive in mature forests, the Senecas used fire not only as a tool to establish farmland but also to create “edge” habitat and to help drive deer during communal hunts. This method of hunting involved building brush fences 8- to 9-feet high in order to lead the animals to an ever-narrowing trap. A ring of small fires was built around the perimeter of the area, and groups of men and boys would walk several paces apart, beating bones and barking like wolves. Deer were stampeded into the enclosure where other hunters awaited with snares and spears. In the longhouse after a successful hunt, they would celebrate and give thanks to the supernatural keeper of the game.

Every part of a deer’s body was utilized. Venison was a major source of food, and bones and antlers were fashioned into tools and weapons. Hides were used for clothing, blankets, floor coverings and numerous other practical items in the daily life of the Senecas.

The Senecas grew and prospered for hundreds of years, but their time of greatness in the Finger Lakes region was soon to come to an end. The year was 1779 and it was time, again, for a change to the land.

o season surpasses spring for premium bird watching in the Finger Lakes.

Our area’s birds are at their most active and are conspicuous in their colorful breeding plumage as they head north or begin setting up housekeeping for the season.

Some of the best bird watching in the region lies along the south coast of Lake Ontario. From March through May the physical barrier of the lake causes northbound birds to concentrate along the shoreline in forested and brushy areas. Because of this, our Great Lake is home to several regionally and globally important birding areas in New York State and Ontario Province.

Watch for large soaring birds and smaller migrants Starting in late February, hawks begin to appear on the south shore, along with other large soaring birds that concentrate along the coast. Cold water prevents the formation of rising warm air thermals that these birds use to travel, so they are reluctant to cross a stretch of open water. Tens of thousands of hawks and turkey vultures along with eagles and sand hill cranes then travel along the shoreline within a mile or so of Lake Ontario. They move eastward in Wayne, Cayuga and Oswego counties, and one of the best places to watch them is at Derby Hill, a seasonal bird observatory just east of Oswego. In fact, some of the best spring hawk watching in North America occurs there. At Derby Hill, trained observers count and identify passing birds during migration. Under the right conditions, up to 10,000 birds a day may pass overhead in truly spectacular flights. The observatory website shows a daily log of sightings.

Although Derby Hill has a formal viewing program, almost any undeveloped shoreline location in eastern Wayne or Cayuga counties also has potential for good hawk viewing in the spring, especially when south or southeast winds push the birds up near shore.

Smaller migrant birds also concentrate along Lake Ontario’s south shore in the spring. Like the hawks, they use undeveloped natural areas within a half-mile of the shore as staging areas where they feed and rest before continuing their journeys. This makes fields and forests near the lake particularly important to bird conservation at a time when so many species of migrant birds are showing pronounced population declines. Many of the small, far-traveling birds, like the wood warblers, fly at night. After fueling up on insects during the day, they go directly across the lake. Other birds, like blue jays, crows and bobolinks, travel by day and follow the shoreline, stopping to feed as they move along.

Because leaves emerge up to a week later than inland along the wind- and waterchilled Lake Ontario shoreline, the beginning bird watcher will have an easier time spotting warblers, fly catchers and other elusive, quick-moving birds of the forest. In recent years, thanks to the state’s successful bald eagle restoration program, it’s also been a good place to sight a bald eagle. A number of pairs are now nesting in lakeshore forests and marshes. Two years ago on a late spring day, I saw a group of seven juvenile bald eagles perching in trees or on a bluff face just east of Port Bay.

Take advantage of public lands We are fortunate to have several public county and state lands along the lakeshore. One that offers an unusually wide variety of birding habitats is Beechwood State Park, a day-use park just west of Sodus Point. The former fruit farm and Girl Scout camp is bounded on the east by Maxwell Creek

and an associated lakeshore marsh.

Waders and various waterfowl alike stop in at the marsh on their way north, while along the lake a small, old-growth forest offers forest birds a refuge.

The park also has younger, secondgrowth forested areas with plenty of brushy undergrowth, open grassy areas and several stands of closely planted pine and larch trees. Each of these habitats attracts a different mix of migrant and resident birds.

Maxwell Creek is a popular destination for human fishermen during the spring steelhead trout run. A public access trail runs south along its west bank, ending at a pretty little waterfall.

Beechwood has its own parking area; there is also parking and access for fishermen along its east side with good views of the marsh behind the Maxwell Creek Bed & Breakfast.

Don’t miss the marshes at Red Creek The Red Creek Wildlife Manage-

ment Area, a large parcel of state-owned land in the town of Wolcott, is an outstanding area for birding by the lake.

Even though several stands of hardwood were clear-cut by the state a few years ago, open land and areas of logged-over, second-growth forest still attract northbound birds. The expansive prairie-like marsh is a place of great beauty with a hint of mystery about it when viewed on a fair spring morning. Marshes present the bird watcher with a paradox, for much remains hidden within their sunlit open reaches of rushes and water. Wrens, bitterns and rails are often heard more than seen here.

There are two good places to view Red Creek marshes, from bridges on both Broadway and Larkin roads. Since many marsh birds are elusive, you’ll need your ears as well as your eyes to find them. In early spring before the marsh greens up, expect to see at least a few diving ducks, like the golden eye or merganser, on the creek. A bit later various marsh birds arrive, and often dozens of tree swallows

hawk over the cattails and perch on the wires by the road, sometimes with a blue bird pair or two. There have even been a few sightings of sand hill cranes here.

If the birds are scarce at Red Creek, continue north to the end of Broadway Road, where you can pull into a stateowned parking lot. You’ll find a superb view of the lake and its coastline. It’s a good spot to look for a resident bald eagle, often a dark brown juvenile, since the big birds like to soar along the bluff or perch in trees along the shore.

The open meadow to the west provides viewing of the sky and a vantage point for spring hawk migrations that pass over this point in April and May. Smaller migrating birds, like blue jays, cedar wax wings, gold finches and bobolinks also follow the shoreline, and you may see them flying east across the open mowed area.

A rough foot path runs down the west side of the drumlin from the grassy field to the beach and more than a mile of public lands run west to the other side of Red Creek Marsh. When the creek’s waters are raised by spring rains, it sometimes breaks through the gravel beach.

Its flow out into the lake then attracts carp, alewife and other fish. The fish run sometimes brings hundreds of hulls and terns, along with an eagle or osprey or two, close to shore.

Other lakeshore areas worth checking out for spring birding include the Sterling Nature Center, Fair Haven Beach State Park and the west barrier bar park on Fair Haven Bay. The bay is about 5 miles east of Scotts Bluff. Chimney Bluffs State Park and the large wildlife management area just west of Port Bay and Beaver Creek at the end of Dutch Street also offer good spring birding.

By June most of the bird migration along the lakeshore is over. However, there are still resident birds to be seen in lakeshore forests and in wetland areas.

Several birding clubs and groups in the region maintain websites that include calendars of group outings or detail unusual bird sightings and other information of interest.

Populations of birds of all sorts, ranging from over-wintering ducks on the open lake to spring migrant warblers, are in decline. Habitat destruction and modification by human

activity is believed to be responsible for much of the decline. Along the lakeshore, pressure to build waterfront homes and to harvest standing timber has degraded much of the area’s natural cover that is so important for migrants.

Cornell University has developed a guide for landowners with wood lots, to help them manage their property for the benefit of forest birds such as the scarlet tanager and cerulean warbler.

ust east of Elmira and adjacent to Route 17 (soon to be Interstate 86), a granite monument tops a hill overlooking the scenic Chemung Valley. It commemorates the Revolutionary War Battle of Newtown, when Major General John Sullivan led an expedition against Britain’s Native American allies in western New York.

In terms of its significance to the war, historians rank the 1779 battle high, said Paul W. Hawke, chief of the National Park Service’s American Battlefield Protection Program. An advisory board of eminent scholars placed Newtown Battlefield among the top six Revolutionary War battlefield sites, he said, when they were asked to identify the relative significance of thousands of military sites of both the Revolutionary War and the War of 1812.

Sullivan was directed by General George Washington to punish the people of the Iroquois Confederacy. As allies of Britain, they were raiding settlements and massacring inhabitants on the western and northern frontiers, most notably at

Cherry Valley in northern New York and Wyoming Valley in Pennsylvania, according to Glenn F. Williams, historian of the National Museum of the U.S. Army at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. Williams is the author of Year of the Hangman: George Washington’s Campaign Against the Iroquois, a comprehensive and engaging book on the Sullivan Expedition.

“The expedition was launched because of the war of terror that the British irregulars and their Iroquois allies were conducting on our backcountry,” Williams said. “It was a punitive expedition to reply to that. It was not intended to stop the raids on the frontier, but by the end of the war the Iroquois were not as militarily significant as they had been before the war. It probably spelled the end of the Six Nations’ military domination of that part of the continent.”

PRESERVING A NATIONAL LANDMARK

The Newtown Battlefield Reservation State Park surrounds the monument and provides a bucolic setting for the commemorative marker. But the fact of the matter is that the park contains very little of the actual Newtown field of battle. Most of the battlefield lies south and east of the state reservation on privately owned land in the hamlet of Lowman. In 1973, the state park and the adjoining land on which the Newtown battle was fought – a total of 2,100 acres spread across parts of three towns – was designated a National Historic Landmark.

While landmark status signifies a site’s historic importance, it does not preserve the area from intrusive or destructive development. Recently, a campaign was begun by Chemung County historians and other interested persons to address preservation of the as-yet, mostly unspoiled Newtown site.

Two revolutionary hearing devices According to Williams, Washington specifically ordered “the total destruction and devastation” of the Six Nations settlements. The commander urged that, “the country may not be merely overrun but destroyed.” Williams said he considered titling his book Not Merely Overrun but Destroyed, but recalled that the publisher found the phrase “too intense.”

Sullivan’s Battle Sullivan’s campaign took shape at Easton, Pennsylvania, where the general assembled troops and supplies during May and June of 1779. It was a difficult task, noted Williams, and fraught with delays. Finally, on June 18, they began an arduous five-day march through the rugged Pocono Mountain wilderness to Fort Wyoming, near Wilkes-Barre. The troops described one leg of that trek as “the swamp of death.”

At the Wyoming Valley outpost, Sullivan was delayed again while he waited for the arrival of more supplies – foodstuffs that had already spoiled needed to be replaced. “You can imagine Washington’s frustration just by reading the letters he wrote to Sullivan, basically telling him, ‘Get the hell moving!’” said Williams.

On July 31, Sullivan’s force of 3,500 men, along with 1,200 horses and 800 head of cattle, left Fort Wyoming near Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania, to march north to New York’s western frontier. The expedition arrived at Tioga, Pennsylvania (now Athens), on August 22 where it was joined by Brigadier General James Clinton and his 1,600 men from northern New York.

On August 26, the expedition resumed its trek northward. Three days later, the troops arrived at Newtown, an Iroquois settlement not far from present-day Lowman. There, a 200man force of Loyalist Colonel John Butler’s Rangers and 500 Native Americans commanded by Iroquois war chief Joseph Brant waited in ambush.

dier’s words, “an extensive breastwork, which extended at least half a mile, and most artfully concealed with green boughs and trees.”

Heavy fighting ensued and continued throughout the day, with the Americans pounding the British positions with artillery. By six o’clock in the evening, the enemy had been routed at a cost of four American lives, including one officer, and about 14 British and Native American deaths.

On August 31, after burning some 40 buildings and about 150 acres of corn and other vegetables at Newtown, Sullivan and his troops began a two-week-long march north and west toward Genesee, said Williams. As they advanced, they destroyed Iroquois villages and burned crops. By September 30, the general and his men were back at Fort Tioga in Pennsylvania.

A publication by the Chemung County Historical Society notes that in a report to President of Congress John Jay, Sullivan wrote that he and his men had destroyed 40 Iroquois towns. “The quantity of corn destroyed, at a moderate computation, must amount to 160,000 bushels.

“We have not left a single settlement or field of corn in the country of the Five Nations, nor is there even the appearance of an Indian on this side of Niagara,” continued Sullivan in the report. He said he believed his orders from Washington had been “fully executed.”

In addition to providing an informative account of Sullivan’s forces and the battle at Newtown, the booklet urges the public to “help save Newtown Battlefield for future generations.”

among the British. In fact, said Hawke, “The overall cost of waging the war is what really tipped the scales. Looking at it from the British economic point of view, the Battle of Newtown had as much to do with ending the war as Saratoga and Yorktown.”

Today’s battle A significant portion of the Newtown battle occurred in Lowman, on land owned for the last 60 years by the family of Virgiline and the late Ralph Jilson. Virgiline Jilson, who turned 96 in January, farmed about 200 acres with her husband Ralph until their dairy barn burned in 1955. She still lives in her Lowman farmhouse’. Built in 1797, it is one of oldest homes in Chemung County. She proudly showed me a Revolutionary War bayonet her husband found one day “right up there on the hill.”

child. That land stretches from Jilson’s home, which is adjacent to Route 17, up to the boundary of the Newtown Battlefield Reservation State Park. Local historians consider it a prime target for preservation.

Russell Smith, who lives in Corning, is vice president of the board of trustees of the Chemung County Historical Society. This January, he sent letters to a select group of local landowners, government representatives, leaders of historical groups and businesspersons, inviting them to join the society’s new ad hoc task force on Newtown Battlefield National Park. The letter read: “The Chemung County Historical Society has commissioned me to establish a task force of community leaders, property owners and others who may be interested in or affected by the establishment of a national park for Newtown Battlefield. It is because we perceive you are having an interest in the outcome that we today invite you to join us in our effort to establish a national park in a way that enhances both the cultural and historical aspects of our community without infringing on anyone’s privacy or property.”

Mary Daniels, one of Virgiline Jilson’s daughters, was among the recipients of Smith’s letter. She lives with her

husband, Frederick, in a house they built on the Jilson farmland up the hill from her mother’s home. The Daniels own about 40 acres of land around their residence.

“Well I, of course, am not for it,” said Daniels, about the proposed battlefield national park. “I don’t know how they can possibly do it without infringing on our property rights.”

She was surprised to receive the letter, and noted that she is not averse to serving on the committee. “The main reason I would serve is to find out what actually is going on.

It would not be to promote the idea,” Daniels said.

“If they would come in and buy (the property) from us at fair market value, I’m not opposed to that,” she said.

What she fears, though, is the government seizing the property by eminent domain.

Hawke, the battlefield preservationist, emphasized that the government does not resort to the use of eminent domain. He said, “The federal government, I think, has learned its lesson. We try very hard to protect private property rights.”

If Congress says the land should be a national park, said Hawke, the more likely scenario is that it would be purchased at fair market value if and when it became available,

Smith’s letter was also sent to Margaret Clarke, a Lowman resident with deep roots in the community. Clarke is a seventh-generation descendent of Jacob Lowman, an early settler of the hamlet in the late 18th century. Clarke grew up in the house built by Jacob in 1819 and now lives in a home built by Jacob’s son, George, in 1839. Clarke runs a 600-acre dairy farm with a herd of 200 Jersey cows. Her husband, Edward Clarke, is a general surgeon.

“One of the things most interesting to the national park people is that this area is pretty much open land,” Clarke observed. “The combined Sullivan and Clinton armies passed through, I think, just about where my house is now. Mother always looked for cannons in the woods because they got stuck in the mud down there.

“In my mind,” Clarke opined, “the idea of some sort of designation of this area as an important battle site is a good one. This is a lovely area, and if this keeps it lovely, I’m in favor of it.”

Clarke believes the park proposal could benefit the community economically: “When they started working on the highway [the proposed Interstate 86], they took away our gas station and two restaurants. All they left us was the dirty-book store,” she said.

“I’m thinking that perhaps this might be an opportunity to have some contained growth: a decent restaurant, a nice motel and a visitor center with information about the area.

“I see it as being a benefit without being terribly intrusive,” she concluded.

irst, you notice the sound â&#x20AC;&#x201C; a continuous low rumble like thunder in the distance, coming from somewhere up the gorge. Like the stream

beside us, we meandered through brush and trees, getting closer. Soon the rumble changed to the unmistakable symphony of falling and splashing water.

Ahead of us we glimpsed white water tumbling over cliffs.

Picked to be the Best!

I

had heard about these waterfalls several years back, but never found time to check them out. One fine mid-January day, when the thermometer read an atypical 60 degrees, my brother Jim and I set out to explore Three Falls Woods in Manlius. It’s a hidden jewel known well by the locals who use it for hiking, bird watching, skiing, snowshoeing, mountain biking and photography. Plenty of trails crisscross this 175-acre area.

There are several places to gain access to Three Falls Woods. One is a trailhead on Sweet Road about half a mile from its intersection with Route 173 – it’s on the right as you head north. From the same intersection headed east about a half-mile on Route 173, the stream that feeds one of the falls passes under the road, and there is a handy parking spot on the left. You literally step out of your car and walk 15 feet into the woods to behold these lovely falls. Farther down Route 173 towards Manlius, turn left onto Glencliffe Road, and drive until you come to a sharp bend in the road. Look for a parking spot between the houses on the right side of the road, then walk up the hillside.

Clints, gilks and history lessons If you enter from Sweet Road, you’ll notice the limestone rocks and the multitude of emerald colored mosses that cover them. It looks like stone pavement from some ancient civilization.

Called “karst” landscape, it is made up of carbonate rocks, such as limestone and dolostone, that have certain unique surface and subsurface features.

It appears man made, but it is actually the natural result of advancing glaciers bulldozing away any overburden to expose the horizontal beds of limestone.

The limestone is ever-so-slowly eroded by rain, a process that speeds up slightly when the rain is mildly acidic. Over thousands of years the surface dissolves and cracks. Joints and fissures become deeper and wider to form “clints” (the slabs of rock) and “grikes” (the spaces between them).

time climbing over the talus slopes looking for fossils. Limestone in this area was used to build the Erie Canal, and there are several kilns still standing that were used to make cement. Some of the trails here were bridle paths used around 1917 by the newly created state police force.

Their training place, Camp Newayo, was nearby. We also saw massively built stone walls parallel to our path. We figured they were left over from the days when this land was used for pastures.

Three falls in one view Jim and I came to a cliff overlooking a small stream. We turned west and walked until we found a spot that allowed us to easily climb down to the stream and then make our way up it. Jim and I don’t like to stick to the beaten path.

The farther we went, the higher the cliffs became on either side of us. Part of the Onondaga Escarpment, they’re made up of layers of limestone laid down 500 million years ago when this area was covered by warm inland seas. The shells of tiny sea creatures accumulated over the years on the sea floor to depths of hundreds of feet and then, over time, were

There are several common names for this spring flowering plant: wake robin, red trillium, purple trillium and my favorite, “Stinking Benjamin.” It smells like rotting meat to attract flies for pollination.

compressed into solid rock. You can find the fossilized remains of various corals here and there.

We came to a spot where we could see all three waterfalls in one view. What a beautiful sight! We were standing in a bowl, the floor of which was carved up by the three streams that converged to form the one we had followed. Woods, strewn with limestone boulders and fallen trees, filled the bowl.

Many shades of moss grow on everything. I have heard that there are over 65 different species of moss in this area, along with trillium, wild ginger, hepatica, trout lily and blood root.

Looking at the falls, from left to right, is Staircase Falls, its waters cascading down rock ledges from Route 173.

The middle falls is called Tall Twins because it has the highest vertical drop and is split by an outcropping of rock near the top. Tucked around a corner of the cliff is Cascade Falls, a thin, broad sheet of water falling from the cliffs’ edge onto a jumble of moss-covered boulders.

Unfortunately there is a looming threat of development to the lands above and below the falls, which could severely impact the quality of this area, but an organization called Manlius Greenspace Coalition is striving to preserve the landscape. Their long-term goal is to create a nature corridor that would connect Green Lakes State Park in the east with Clark Reservation to the west. It’s an ambitious plan considering the number of acres and landowners involved but well worth the effort.

e all ordered a DiPacific specialty, the club sandwich. Crisply toasted quarters of white bread between stacks of mayo-slathered ham, beef, tomato and lettuce were saved from toppling apart by America’s great keeper-together, the toothpick.

Terry and I ordered iced tea to drink.

Lee Burgess, 15, poses with his grandfather, Patti asked for a glass of milk, which, when Bill Lee, in the photo booth at Roseland Park in Canandaigua. set down beside her, momentarily threw me a curve. Milk is for kids, I’ve always thought, not for people in their 60s, which all of us were at the time.

In a skewed sort of way, though, “kid” fit well into our luncheon that noon at DiPacific’s Steakhouse, corner of Routes 332 and 96, 10 minutes north of Canandaigua.

We, especially Terry and I, were reminiscing about our childhoods in the Finger Lakes, Owasco Lake and Auburn, to be specific.

Our conversation was tinged with sadness. “It’s a long throw from here to Fort Myers,” Terry said.

“Cuz” (Terry’s my cousin) was referring to an almost yearly ritual, back when we were young, of tossing a softball to one another both up on Ross Street Extension in

Auburn and on Rockefeller Road in the Town of Owasco, a little southeast of Burtis Point on Route 38A along Owasco Lake. Terry was born and spent his life in Auburn. I, too, am a native of that city.

My father, however, in search of better jobs during the 1930s, moved my mother and me first to Binghamton, then to Hamilton, a small city near Cincinnati, Ohio.

But I spent my summers in Auburn, living alternately with my grandparents on Westlake Avenue and the ones on Swift Street, and hanging out with kids my age – Louie, Bobby and Eda Contiguglia, and Terry and his brother, Tom. Terry and his wife, Patti, were finally leaving Upstate New York. He’d sold his business, Midlakes Memorials, and was retiring to Florida. Down there it’s warm and sunny most every day, all day, a sharp contrast to Finger Lakes country where coaxing three months of more than 75degree temperatures and skies without threat is considered “a great summer.”

But Terry will be near water in Florida. Water, hands down, is the great mystique of the Finger Lakes. Swimming, yes. Boating, yes. Natural beauty, yes. But just being able to gaze across any one of the familiar or not-so-familiar Finger Lakes and dream, that’s the allure.

Like some sort of secret potion, the gentle lap, lap of Owasco Lake, especially in the early morning, triggered wonderment of the far off, especially in the minds of kids like me. I felt that way

about the Lehigh Valley Railroad, too.

Just as the morning mist disappeared in the warm sun, I watched the train wiggle its way north to south along the lake’s west shore toward Cascade and Cortland, then maybe Ithaca, Elmira or Scranton.

They were towns I’d heard of but never visited, except in my thoughts.

The baseball thing Back in the late 1940s, Auburn was home to a classy Class C professional baseball team, the Cayugas. They were classy because the club usually finished atop five other Border League clubs that included Watertown and Ogdensburg in New York, and Kingston, Sherbrooke and Granby across the St. Lawrence in Ontario.

“Freddy Gerken’s in town tonight,” my grandfather, William J. (Bill) Lee, warned me when the archrival Watertown Athletics appeared to challenge our beloved Cayugas. “We’d better get down to Falcon Park and root for our guys.”

It was Grandpa Bill’s loving way of inviting me to join him at the game; he was as much a baseball nut as me.

Gerken was a big homerun hitter. While Auburn beat Watertown most of the time, the score was usually a shaky 9 to 6, with all the losers’ runs knocked in with a pair of three-run Gerken homers.

I thought of that as I sat on the dock at Burtis Point looking out across Owasco’s waters, just like I dreamed of dancing like Fred Astaire or dating

movie stars June Haver, Esther Williams or June Allyson from those wonderful Hollywood movies of the â&#x20AC;&#x2122;40s. Bobby Contiguglia, who became a judge, and his bother Louie, a lawyer, and I kept upto-date on the silver screenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s tuning and wooing every Saturday night at the Auburn Theater on South Street.

It was a few miles south of Owasco Lake, but the city of Auburn was, nevertheless, the lake, and the lake was Auburn, at least in my young mind. Pristine physically for sure â&#x20AC;&#x201C; you could look 20 feet down off a floating raft and clearly see the bottom. Only stones and plants down there; no garbage, cans or other manmade stuff.

Pristine, too, in the minds and hearts of all of us kids. Nothing could go wrong in that place where we played, learned, grew and dreamed.

Except for occasional visits, Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d left the Finger Lakes behind years ago, opting for Ohio and later, Rochester.

Terry, my softball-throwing cousin and his mate, Patti were leaving lake country, too. Forever. No drive-bys.

No weekends. Maybe a holiday to see their kids, but basically Owasco Lake and Auburn would have to exist without them. Without us.

Fort Myers is simply too far. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Hey, but you can do it!â&#x20AC;? Terry said to me as he waved from his SUV. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Do what?â&#x20AC;? I yelled back. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Toss me the softball!â&#x20AC;? he smiled. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s a helluva distance, but youâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve always had a great arm.â&#x20AC;?

In his dreams, I thought. But know what? Maybe heâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s right. Thanks to the rolling hills and clear, clean, gentle waters of the Finger Lakes, weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d done a lot with dreams. Tossing a softball to Fort Myers might just be a piece of cake.

About Forsythia: Advice from Doc and Katy

G

olden bells are the most common of all flowering shrubs. There are upright types and others that spread or weep. Grow in semi-shade or full sun. Urnlike is F. intermedia spectablis, and fountain-like (drooping) is F. suspense. Hardiest and earliest to bloom is F. ovate, but it is less effective and its flowers are more amber in color. F. intermedia is a hybrid between F.suspense and F. viridissima and a good upright kind. The variety primulina has much paler yellow flowers. There are several varieties of dwarf forsythia as well.

Throughout 2008, “Gardening” will present material originally written by George “Doc” and Katy Abraham, the beloved husband-and-wife gardening team who offered advice to amateurs and experts for over 50 years. The two Cornell graduates, with double degrees in horticulture and journalism, opened a small greenhouse business after World War II. They had two children, Darryl and Leanna, and wrote a syndicated gardening column that at one time reached 5 million readers. In 1950, Doc and Katy began a call-in radio program on WHAM 1180-AM in Rochester. Their folksy “Green Thumb” program featured useful gardening advice, humor and inspiration. The complete archives of their life’s work can be found at the Kroch Library at Cornell.

Pruning If your bush is full of high, dead growth or outgrown limbs, cut the branches all the way back to the ground, and let new growth come up. Or you can cut out one-third of the worst now, another third next year and a third the following. You can make forsythia less straggly by pinching off the tips of strong-growing canes in late spring or early summer. The varieties F. viridissima and F. ovata are pre-

ferred if you don’t object to the straggling habit.

By way of an annual, partial rejuvenation, the best time to prune is right after the flowering season.

These plants flower from branches developed during the preceding summer. If the bush is old and unsightly, you can cut it back in spring or summer. Don’t wait until fall. Weeping forsythia and the upright types should not be “bobbed,” that is sheared like a hedge, as you’ll ruin the floral display. You can cut the tips back in dormant period (before buds break in spring) or wait until after flowering is over, then prune back to desired height. If you don’t care about sacrificing blooms, you can prune almost any time. February is a good time to prune, then you can bring the blooming twigs indoors and have fresh flowers at no cost. Stick the twigs in a vase of water. The best way to handle forsythia is to cut out some old branches annually, making the cut at the base of the bush. Thinning out the bush is good practice.

Blooming Non-blooming is due to cold winters freezing buds. You see flowers around the bottom of the bush only – due to the heat of earth or snow protection. Higher up the buds were killed, hence no blooms. This happens to exposed bushes, for example, near a corner. A bush that’s protected 6 feet away will bloom. Buds drying up may be due to a dry previous summer or a severe winter. Forsythia sometimes bloom in fall, due to extra strength or a mild autumn. Sometimes the blossoms will start out yellow and turn green, or will come out green. No one knows what causes this, but it is believed that cold weather in spring – sudden changes in temperatures – will cause this color change. It may also be tied up with dry summers the year before, although temperature change is more likely the cause. Nothing can be done to correct this.

Diseases and insects Bacteria, fungi or insects can cause Stem-gall, lumps on stems. Cut off and burn all canes and branches that bear galls.

Leaf spots are due to four types of fungi. Pick off and burn spotted leaves.

Spray with a fungicide containing chlorothalonil or mancozeb.

Die-back is a fungus that invades blossoms and flower stalks, then twigs, and kills them back. Prune out dead twigs and stems.

If insects eat holes in leaves, spray with Sevin or an insecticide targeted at the specific pest.

Finger Lakes landmark of sorts has garnered national attention recently, thanks to a dramatic exhibit and a new book. The Lives They Left Behind: Suitcases From a State Hospital Attic focuses on patients of the former Willard Psychiatric Center near Ovid. The exhibit will be on display at the Cayuga Museum in Auburn from February 23 through April 20. A book by the same name, written by the exhibit’s curators, became available in January.

For those of us in the Finger Lakes who lived in the shadow of the state institution, the patients’ stories provide definition to the hazy/scary goings-on that most of us, thankfully, could only imagine.

An eerie discovery In 1995, just before Willard Psychiatric Center closed, state workers and Willard staff scrambled to collect historical artifacts before the doors were locked for good. New York State Museum Curator Craig Williams traveled there from Albany hoping to find a nurse’s uniform, or possibly some antique furniture. In the attic of an abandoned building, he and two local workers discovered much more: a roomful of suitcases, 427 in all. They contained the belongings of former patients who had arrived there during the first half of the 20th century.

who had come to join the lost souls and the worldly possessions,” writes Peter Stastny, MD, coauthor with Darby Penney, of The Lives They Left Behind. “For Beverly [Courtwright, who had worked at the center] and some others who saw it, this upper room exuded an unearthly air, a hovering presence of hundreds of souls or spirits attached to the many people who had handled and worn the items in those bags before they were packed, who had read the books, written in the diaries and looked into the mirrors they contained.”

Willard patients relinquished their possessions upon arrival; they were stored and then forgotten.

More than half of the 50,000 patients treated at the institution lived out their days there.

Craig Williams transported all the suitcases to his museum’s warehouse. That’s where Penney, then director of recipient affairs at the New York State Office of Mental Health, and Stastny, an associate clinical professor of psychiatry at Albert Einstein College of Medicine, encountered the luggage in 1999. They went through the suitcases, cross-referencing them with medical records, snapshots and correspondence. Piecing together the lives of just a small group of patients required extensive research over a period of several years. Their work, documented by photographer Lisa Rinzler, culminated in an exhibit called Lost Cases, Recovered Lives: Suitcases From a State Hospital Attic, displayed at the New York State Museum in Albany in 2004.

patients. Over 600,000 visitors viewed the original exhibit in 2004, and 50,000 recently at the traveling version at the Madison Avenue Branch of the New York Public Library. What makes the display so alluring?

“The haunting thing about the suitcase owners is that it’s so easy to identify with them,” reported Newsweek magazine. They were real people derailed by circumstances that would derail anyone – the sudden death of a loved one, an abusive husband, severe pain and illness.

Before Willard, as the suitcases attest, they led full lives.

One of the patients, Margaret Dunleavy, was sent to Willard in 1941 and died there 32 years later. A nurse in New York City, originally from Edinburgh, Scotland, Margaret had earned a nice living and enjoyed good friends, her own car and travel. But she was also plagued by physical ailments that included the effects of a head injury suffered when she was in nurse’s training. When a doctor concluded that her emotional problems overshadowed her physical complaints, he sent her to Willard when she was 48. With her, Margaret took all her earthly possessions packed into 18 suitcases, boxes and trunks. She had, by far, the largest accumulation of personal possessions among the suitcase owners.

“This unique exhibit simply appeals to visitors’ natural curiosity,” said Carrie N. Barrett, Cayuga Museum’s curator. They’re looking into other people’s suitcases after all, peeking into someone else’s private history.
