ust this past week the world learned that a bird, once thought to be extinct, has miraculously come back from the dead. The Ivory-billed Woodpecker was rediscovered recently in Arkansas. The last reported sighting of this bird was more than 60 years ago, and the official news of its existence, released by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology and the Nature Conservancy, has given the media a positive story to report.

The point I’m making is that this bird may be considered insignificant by some, but it has generated much interest in the general public. The near resurrection of the woodpecker has sparked something in people that we all crave; a second chance, hope, perseverance and faith. Amazing what a simple animal sighting can do to raise that level of interest.

The woodpecker inspires me to approach a subject that’s currently in the media. Officials of Seneca County are debating the fate of the Seneca Army Depot. At one time this installation served an important military purpose. Now priorities and circumstances have changed, and the property is no longer needed for military use. The depot has been enclosed by a fence that kept a very small population of white deer within its boundaries. Over the past 60 years this white deer herd has increased in number and is now the largest, possibly only, herd of white deer

in North America.

Officials are considering removing the fence and drastically reducing the acreage that currently sustains the white deer population. This action would most likely decimate the white deer because the majority would be assimilated into the brown deer herd that surrounds the depot. The white deer left in a smaller enclosure won’t have enough nautural resources to sustain themselves. Eventually the white deer numbers would be down to an insignificant, barely noticeable number.

What the depot has right now is something no one else in the world has.

Imagine folks in New Jersey traveling to Seneca County just to see these special animals. The potential for national media exposure and tourism is great, depending on how the product is marketed. And yes, the white deer herd is a product, like Finger Lakes open water and wine.

I’m sure the decision of what to do with the depot is a very difficult one to make. I believe that tourism in the Finger Lakes has a ways to go before its potential is realized, and the white deer can be an attraction of the future, rather than an afterthought in 60 years like the Ivory-billed Woodpecker nearly was. Seize this day and opportunity.

It is 700 feet long and has Class 1 and 2 drops.

Rare Seneca White Deer Threatened The Seneca Army Depot Conservation Area near Romulus is home to the world’s largest and possibly only herd of white deer. The herd of unique animals, fenced off from the brown deer population, is threatened by plans to reuse the former military facility. If the old Army Depot fence is removed during the changeover, the white deer will be assimilated into existing herds of brown deer and eventually die out.

Ithaca Journal Features Student Historians The Ithaca Journal is featuring Student Historian articles in the Saturday edition of the paper. Each week, the paper runs an article written by a Tompkins County high school student about the research of an item in The History Center in Tompkins County’s collection.

The Student Historian program provides students with the opportunity to explore history on a local and national level and allows them to experience community service from a leadership role. The program was awarded a Distinguished Youth Award by the Tompkins County Legislature last fall for its contribution to the community.

Finger Lakes Winery Is Set for New Horror Film Watkins Glen and Glenora Wine Cellars will be the real-life set for an independent mystery, action and comedy film written and directed by Finger Lakes resident George Boyce. The film, titled “Vineyards of Death,” begins with the murder of a winery owner. His widow, played by Sarah Desage, tries to prove her innocence with the help of a retired NYPD detective, played by Boyce.

“Vineyards of Death” will be filmed between June and August and should be ready for the spring 2006 film festival season. Boyce does not plan to release his shooting schedule to the public, though he does plan to release photos of the crew’s progress at www. glenara.net.

International Jazz Festival Returns to Rochester The fourth annual Rochester International Jazz Festival will take place from June 10-18, offering more than nine days of diverse music and fun. The festival features more than 100 concerts at venues all over Rochester, including two new free outdoor venues at East Avenue and Gibbs Street.

This year’s festival will feature more than 500 musicians representing more than 15 countries, including Sonny Rollins, Chaka Khan, Dave Brubeck, Chick Corea, Ravi Coltrane and more.

Hike The Trails of Tioga The Tioga County Active Living Partnership, a partnership of 10 Tioga County groups, has unveiled its new “Trails of Tioga” map, a free resource showing over 80 miles of trails at 18 locations within the county.

The easy-to-read topographic-style map includes enlarged views of the trails, detailed descriptions and driving directions, as well as several biking and cross-country skiing trails.

Additionally, the map includes a listing of the county’s public parks and boat and canoe access sites.

Seneca Museum Presents Erie Canal Art The Seneca Museum has received a grant from Finger Lakes Arts and Grants Services (FLAGS), enabling the museum to present four artists’ presentations on the Erie Canal.

The fourth and final of these presentations will take place on June 19 at 2 p.m. The Dady Brothers will perform a 45-minute act, depicting the construction of the canal and canal life accompanied by the fiddle, mandolin and several other instruments.

N E W S B I T S Coming Soon: The Finger Lakes Wine Festival The 2005 Finger Lakes Wine Festival, supported by the Corning Museum of Glass, will be held July 15-17 on the grounds of Watkins Glen International racetrack. Tickets for the annual event went on sale in early March and ticket sales have already surpassed those in 2004.

The festival will feature tastings from over 70 local wineries, including more than 500 wines. Arts and crafts, food demonstrations, music and the Hot Glass Roadshow will also be featured at the festival. Cayuga Museum Goes on Big Tree Search The Cayuga Museum in Auburn has instigated a countywide search for the largest trees of each species. The search began on Arbor Day and will conclude on November 15, when each nominated tree will be formally measured. Each of the largest trees will then be nominated to the New York State Big Tree Search.

The search is part of an exhibition that opens in June called Cayuga Wild. The display will explore the natural history of the county and its relation to the county’s economic and cultural development.

Cornell Birdmen Find “Extinct” Woodpecker The Ivory-billed Woodpecker, long believed to be extinct, was recently rediscovered by a research team led by Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology at Cornell University and The Nature Conservancy. More than 60 years after the last confirmed sighting of the species in the United States, the bird was spotted in the Big Woods of eastern Arkansas.

Evidence included multiple sightings and video footage that was gathered during an intensive year-long search in the Cache River and White River national wildlife refuges.

Over 50 experts and field biologists took part. The Ivorybilled Woodpecker is the largest woodpecker in North America, and is known through lore as a bird of beauty and indomitable spirit.

Fond memories of a Cayuga Lake vacation

y favorite term during the summer months is “cottage” and I’m not referring to the kind that’s followed by the word “cheese.” I will confess that neither my husband nor I are your typical campers. We’re not really roughing it when we’re staying at the same cottage that we’ve rented for the past two sum-

mers in the Finger Lakes region.

We spend the majority of our days attempting to suntan, and by noon we resemble over-boiled lobsters. We laze around the dock reading cheap magazines, filling each other in on the latest Elvis sighting or alien invasion. A waterfront property with three bedrooms, ceiling fans and scalding hot

water, it’s not exactly your quintessential camping experience.

Do I miss battling the winds while trying to set up camp? Do I yearn to be woken up at six in the morning, blinded by the sun piercing in through a hole in our tent that even a strip of duct tape refuses to cover? Do I dream of resembling a drowned rat after an evening of rain?

After much consideration, the answer is still a resounding NO. Instead of a sleeping bag, I slip effortlessly beneath our sheets that smell “Mountain Fresh” like a glistening drop of morning dew sliding down a single blade of grass. I close my eyes, soaking in the sounds of bullfrogs croaking and crickets chirping like a dry sponge in water. I was made for cottage life, even if my idea of getting back to nature consists of buying herbal toothpaste and organic firewood.

We affectionately nicknamed the fire pit area “Proposal Pit” since that’s where my husband proposed. A true romantic, he waited until nightfall when the campfire sounded like a giant bowl of Rice Krispies, the evening sky peppered with a thousand winking stars. When I finally managed to squeal out a delighted “yes!” to his proposal, he immediately reached down into the murky waters of Cayuga Lake and pulled out a bottle of expensive champagne. Smiling, he claimed the bubbling beverage to be “naturally chilled.”

ness is for canoes. I love to canoe out across the mirrored waters of Cayuga Lake in hopes of spotting a baby beaver, or possibly even a crane.

Members of the reptile and amphibian family need not apply, and Girl Guide or not, I still could not “Be Prepared” for my wildlife adventure last summer.

Having memorized every rock and lily pad for miles around, we decided to venture out with our blue-green spruce colored canoe in a nearby swamp. We portaged over a gravel road and dropped our canoe into the swamp, splashing ourselves in the process. Having only to swat at every third bug or so, I was thankful to have remembered to coat myself with as much bug spray and sunscreen as a muffin tin.

We canoed in swampy waters for over an hour, basking in the afternoon sunshine and paddling our way around tiny countries of algae, lined with tall fence-like bulrushes. Having grown up with a swimming pool, I was reluctant to get out of the canoe unless it was absolutely necessary. My husband laughed at me as I flattened myself like a pancake in order to get under a small bridge, getting a sliver up my nose in the process.

Shortly after we shimmied our canoe over an abandoned beaver dam, we saw a family of ducks. They were the cutest little balls of fuzz I had ever seen, so naturally I wanted to watch their swimming lessons from a closer angle. The water was as shallow as my ex-boyfriend at this point, so I was forced to get out of the canoe.

Wearing my husband’s flip-flops that were five sizes too big, I had to be careful where I stepped. Steadying myself with my trusty paddle with every step I took, I selected the biggest and flattest rocks to make my way towards the fuzzy ducklings. I was in midstep when I happened to glance down at the perfectly rounded rock that I was just about to step on.

I froze, disbelieving what I saw. I had almost stepped onto the back of

an enormous turtle, its shell the approximate size of a pickup truck tire.

I felt the color drain from my face despite the fact that we had been tanning all week. Slowly, I pulled my foot back and waited for my body to reconnect with my brain.

I wanted to scream and jump back into the canoe. I needed to paddle away from that ghastly looking beast as fast as my flabby arms would take me. Unfortunately I had read one too many alien invasion stories and I feared an attack from the killer turtles. As a result, my husband’s name escaped my lips as no more than an audible whisper.

It felt like days before he finally noticed my panic-stricken stance.

Expecting to see something closer to a tadpole than Jurassic Park, he viewed the prehistoric looking creature in the same manner that I had. From inside the canoe.

We stared at its scaled legs and dragon-like tail protruding from its enormous body. I felt indescribably relieved that I noticed him before I decided to engage in a game of hopscotch on his back.

It was at that moment that I remember wishing that I was in a turtle-pool, instead of being in a pool-ofturtle. Armed with our paddles, we forgot all about the ducklings. I took extra caution on the return trip to the cottage. I poked and prodded at every rock with the butt of my paddle before even placing so much as a toenail on it.

To this day, I have no desire to go to Turtle Island, nor to purchase any Turtle Wax. I still hesitate when people pass around the box of chocolate Turtles at Christmas time. It may be true that you can’t rush a turtle, but take it from me, the reverse is definitely not true!

Hot Cars, Cool Treats The Rochester Corvette Club tours the lakes

f you like Corvettes, you’ve got to like ice cream,” explained Bob Fleck, who, with his wife Sheila, is a three-year member of the Rochester Corvette Club and the proud owner of a 1994 green convertible. “Ice cream is practically a food group for Corvette drivers.”

The corvette outing started in 2003 with only 27 cars, all from the Rochester club. This year, 17 clubs from New York, Pennsylvania and Ohio will join the fun. The members look forward to the event all year, but it’s not just for them; anyone who appreciates the timeless sports car is welcome.

Older Corvettes share prime meadow space with newer models at Skyland Farm celebrate Father’s Day, as well as their love of ice cream, with the third annual Keuka Maid Cruise and Luncheon Buffet. After enjoying lunch on the boat, the group will travel to Wagner Vineyards for refreshments, including ice cream, of course.

“You don’t have to be a member, you just need to have a love of Corvettes,” Bob said. “It’s not a car show, just a day of cruising, taking in the beautiful scenery, meeting new friends and seeing old ones. We plan to celebrate this way every year over

Father’s Day weekend. It’s a great day for families to come out and enjoy.”

And if you’re in the area, you won’t be able to miss it, with a caravan of 200 to 250 Corvettes traveling from Hammondsport to Lodi, ending up at Wagner around 4:15 p.m.

The 2004 event hosted 10 clubs, with 130 cars and 230 people. Leading the pack were the Rochester club’s Don and Karen Coast, driving their 1998 Indianapolis 500 Pace Car. After the Keuka Maid cruise, the group relaxed, shopped and sampled gelato at SkyLand Farm in Hector. Gelato, a specialty at SkyLand Farm, is a soft form of ice cream, made with less air and marked by flavors derived from fresh fruits and spices.

As the 200-year-old barn at SkyLand Farm filled with Corvette and ice cream lovers, the crowd in front of the dessert counter grew. Eager ice cream connoisseurs formed lines, at times as long as 40 people, waiting to try one of the many flavors, like white chocolate lavender, rose and pistachio.

Outside the barn, it was ’Vettes as far as the eye could see. Cars filled the front and side yards, as well as an adjacent field. “Ice cream places just pull Corvettes in; they’re like magnets,” explained Ann Anken, from the Mohawk Valley Corvette Club, as she stood near her 2003 anniversary edition red convertible.

we were drawn to the unusual garden art set amidst a striking abundance of flower gardens with little paths, one leading over a small waterfall and pond, complete with croaking frogs. Vying for my attention, to the left, a labyrinth and a view of Seneca Lake. To the right, stained glass, a big open doorway out of which came music and two cats. First stop the cats. Once inside, I was greeted by the work of over 300 local, regional, and U.S. artists – handmade and one of a kind! Where to look first? Wool from the sheep next door.

Jewelry. Glass. Wrought iron. Over 50 kinds of essential oil and herb infused soaps. Colorful brooms (I was tempted to sweep). Walls of copper sculptures. Fountains. Beeswax and bayberry candles. Wood art…And pottery…an entire pottery studio filled with pottery!

Then I found the much talked about Bathroom. All I will tell you is that you will emerge inspired and refreshed. Don’t miss it. Beyond the pottery studio, one is drawn by delightful aromas into the Garden Room Café where a two-story oak tree towers over the bakery. A spiral staircase winds amazingly up through the branches for an adventurous trip up to the second floor. It is like walking up through a gigantic natural sculpture. Look for the photos on how it was built. (The other side of the shop offers a conventional, beautifully wrought iron trimmed staircase.)

Back in the Café was an irresistible display of “comfort food for the heart”: European tarts, mousses, cakes, pies, smoothies, salads and sandwiches…and gelato (Italian ice cream). Since it was warm, I decided on gelato for dessert. The 15-plus flavors, are pre-dipped daily and beautifully displayed in colorful rows in an inviting self-serve fashion. A quick lesson: gelato is denser (less air, less sugar, less butterfat). It has a creamier, more intense flavor which is derived from fresh fruits and spices, not flavorings. I was instructed to let it thaw for just a minute so that one can experience and savor the full and surprisingly powerful flavors.

Sitting in the one of the handcrafted booths overlooking Seneca Lake through the big open windows, I found myself wishing I had room to try some of the other amazing desserts such as the Hazelnut Torte or Cinnamon Bread Pudding. My gaze was drawn to the other side of the café where out in the little farm yard there were goats and sheep enjoying themselves just as much. I watched as the agile goats raced up inside a little barn only to appear through a second story window to await food being pullied up to them from below. Seeing this brought out the child in me – I had to go feed them too.

Once outside I found there were also many chickens racing busily about the pasture and stealing bits of feed that the sheep missed. So these were the gals that the laid the beautiful green, brown and white eggs for sale. I read that these chickens eat mostly grass, carrots, squash, little bugs, and whatever fruit falls from the trees. I am sure that these extraordinary eggs made the tuna sandwich that I had for lunch one of the best I’ve ever eaten.

I finally left laden with treats for home, the perfect wedding gift, pottery for myself, a wish list for my husband, and their open hours. This was the perfect (something for everyone) place to bring the parade of relatives scheduled to visit us this summer.

The car models represented a span of more than 30 years and included every color in the rainbow, and then some. The story behind some of them could be found in their license plates, with phrases like “GRR803,” “NICE 62,” “ATIME4US,” “YLO ROSE,” “WRKN4IT,” “OVERBDGT” and “AWESUM79.”

Skyland Farm hosted the Rochester Corvette Club on a beautiful summer day in 2004 together,” David said. “This is a chance to show off a vehicle that you are proud of. I have a ’38 Packard, which I call my ‘show’ car, and my Corvette convertible is my ‘go’ car.”

Talking to Corvette drivers, their pride and affection for the cars is obvious. “Corvettes are more than just cars,” said Karen Coast, whose husband will drive the lead pace car again this year. (Karen’s own Corvette, a ’75, was left home last year.) “They’re a hobby, even a passion for some people.

It’s something that my husband and I

The Creation of a Winery

H

ow do you improve upon an already much-loved 1880 stone castle on the shores of Seneca Lake? That’s the question the Reeder family pondered for five or so years while Belhurst forged on as one of the most endearing inns in the Finger Lakes. After conducting much tourism-based research, Duane Reeder found his initial idea held much water – when you’re in the middle of the Finger Lakes wine country you create a new, unique winery. As a whole, the Belhurst expansion included a new luxury hotel featuring 20 lake view rooms, a large bar/tavern, a second huge lakeview ballroom, and, of course, a spacious wine and gift shop.

The Winemaker In seeking a winemaker, Reeder knew he wanted someone of world-class caliber, someone who could bring a new style and new vision to the Finger Lakes wineries. He found that vision in Frederique Perrin, a young winemaker from France who grew up with the love of wine. As she tells it, her grandfather, who died shortly before she was born, was an avid wine lover who amassed an extensive wine cellar full of outstanding wines. As she grew, she drank wine from his cellar until one day, when she was about 18, the wines were gone. She contacted Michel acres of vineyard, Perrin and Reeder Juillot, a winemaker whose wines worked together to choose varieties graced the top of her grandfather’s list. that are popular to this region as well He remembered her grandfather and as uncommon varieties which would accepted her as a trainee. Frederique went on to earn her master’s degree in oenology and viticulture from Ecole Nationale Superieure Agronomique in Montpellier. Thus began her career in winemaking.

One of the very few women winemakers in the Finger Lakes, Frederique’s vision here is certainly unique. One of her highly acclaimed wines, a classic dry rose wine, is virtually the first of its kind to be produced in the Finger Lakes. With a 0 percent residual sugar, this blush wine is made by soignée (bleeding) of the Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon ferments. That drawing became the blueprint for building the 18,000-square-foot, technically advanced wine making facility. The winery was constructed, in part, by renovating an old barn at the White Springs Farm.

Frederique’s plan called for the most advanced winery equipment, well-esteemed machinery and equipment vendors to custom-create each piece of the winery. French experts Vaslin Bucher built the technically innovative pneumatic press in use at the winery – the largest XPF Bucher Press in the East. “The pneumatic press represents an essential tool of the vinification process. The diversity of grape varieties and change in grape quality from year to year require a fine, accurate adaptation of the pressing operation to obtain must (part of the pressing and fermenting process) of perfect and constant quality. We worked with KLR Machines to construct the winery crush pad which consists of the pneumatic press, a de-stemmer which processes up to 20 tons of grapes per hour, and the sorting table” explains Reeder. The winery also boasts a diatomaceous earth filter (or DE filter). Widely considered the best filtration system for any winery, this advanced system expertly utilizes DE to filter particles from the lees.

An important safety factor for Frederique’s winery design was a catwalk system. “We don’t work with ladders here,” she says. Local company Vance Metal built the stainless steel functional catwalk system and 20 custom stainless steel upright tanks which together hold more than 20,000 gallons. Additionally, 11 open-top fermenters were custom built by Santa Rosa Stainless Steel in California, which together hold 33 tons of must.

t had been quite a while since I had been in Cortland County. My memory of that trip was that of rising hillsides and farmlands, all decked out in autumn colors. Of course, I remember eating apples too. So my family and I were eager to get reacquainted with this area of the Finger Lakes.

Cortland County, surprisingly, is only a two-hour drive from our home in suburban Rochester, which makes it a convenient day trip for families. We went in search of unusual and inexpensive attractions and events in the outlying areas and larger towns of Cortland County, where local people would shop and meet.

One place that is worth the navigation and time (with a good local map) is Bob’s Country Store and Apothecary Museum, on MarathonMcGraw Road, just north of the town of Marathon. It brings back the memories a bygone era, where customers would keep warm sitting by the potbellied stove, or pass the time away in the summer with a game of corncob checkers. Collectors will find such items as milk bottles, wartime music books and various types of period glassware and dishware.

Joyce Barrows, Bob’s widow and current owner of the store, says that her husband started out as a dairy farmer “but was always a collector.

He always had a thing for country stores, seeing he lived

above one while he was growing up.”

Eventually family and friends donated items to Bob’s Country Store, and Bob also set out to get as many local items and memorabilia as he could.

Bob’s Country Store and Apothecary Museum is open during the summer, Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.-4 p.m., or other days by appointment. Families with strollers may want to park them out front.

After a very winding scenic drive, we decided to investigate shops on Main Street between Port Watson and Groton Street in Cortland. As it turned out, Pinstripes and Polkadots Gallery was featuring an art workshop for kids to recycle an old article of clothing with all sorts of embellishments. So while my artist-in-training was doing a fashion makeover, I browsed downstairs. There were sup80

plies and items for kids such as markers, easels, crayons, clay, paper and project kits, all geared to encourage future art students.

My traveling companions were feeling a little hungry by this point.

Fortunately, Main Street offers many dining options to suit every palate and budget. Of course, where there are college students, there are pizza shops, but there are also other inexpensive alternatives. On our visit we went to the Pita Gourmet, specializing in Mediterranean fare with a Lebanese touch. However, if your younger travelers have more pedestrian tastes, Route 281 south of Route 222 (Groton Street) has familiar family fare.

We had heard from other parents earlier that morning that Cortland had its own castle, which would be the 1890 House Museum and Center for Victorian Arts at 37 Tompkins Street.

This grand limestone mansion was built at the height of the Gilded Age by local successful wire manufacturer Chester F. Wickwire. There are four floors which feature parquet floors, jewel-like stained glass windows, ornate decorative stenciling and oak and cherry woodwork.

Each room is furnished and decorated according to its function at the turn of the century – the sunroom for breakfast, the living room for afternoon tea, the dining room to entertain guests over a multicourse meal prepared by the house staff. Descriptions of typical menus and gender-specific activities of that time are detailed on placards in each room.

The upper two floors have a billiard room and a finished attic space with a cozy children’s nook, surrounded by windows overlooking Cortland.

Youngsters will enjoy exploring the numerous towers and turrets within this fascinating structure.

While on our investigational vacation for this article, my daughter and I went to see “4 Pianos and Some Strings: Works by Ken Butler.” We saw stringed instruments made of a coat hanger, axe, clock and cowboy boot, among other castoffs turned into creative masterpieces. My daughter especially enjoyed the grand pianos made of egg crates, styrofoam, twigs and even played the one made of radios and spare electronic parts.

While you’re on the campus, the Memorial Library has a children’s section (and a coffee shop for adults) which presents readings by local authors, professors and community leaders. If you need a meal or snack, you’ll be pleasantly surprised at the varied menu offerings at each of the dining services throughout the campus. Visitors can have their choice of fine dining, vegetarian fare, grilled sandwiches, and even Friendly’s ice cream. This is not my college food service anymore!

If it’s time for the travelers to get some free-range exercise, numerous parks in Cortland County are available. Yaman Park, off Kennedy Parkway in Cortland, has a man-made beach, picnic pavilions and a playground. For older children, the skate park on-site is open to inline skaters, skateboarders and 20-inch BMX bikes.

Suggett Park at Homer Avenue and Madison Street also has swimming at C. C. Wickwire Pool.

Nature lovers and hikers will delight in Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture on Lime Hollow Road, southwest of Cortland off Route 13 south in the town of McLean. Self-directed activities include the interpretive center and three miles of marked trails, open seven days per week from daylight to dark. T H E Genesee V

T

he Genesee Valley Greenway is a trail following a corridor comprised primarily of old, smoothed-out railways alongside the old Genesee Canal bed. We found it to be a 90-mile-long exclamation point of pure nature, rural farmlands, views of the Genesee River and upwards of 20 historic canal locks. This still relatively unknown walking/cycling trail runs from Genesee Valley Park in Rochester, southward, through four counties, to North Cuba. Joanne Guarnere and I walked its entire length on 12 weekends, over two summers. We parked our car, walked for three or four hours, then turned around and walked back to our car. I guess you could say we walked it twice. The daily mileage given below represents the distance one way.

• DAY ONE Ballantyne Road to Scottsville – 7 miles We started our trek on Ballantyne Road, half-a-mile west of the Genesee River, where we park near the apron of the well-marked Greenway. This section sets the perfect tone for the ’way. The trees lining the trail form a natural arbor or tunnel, running as far ahead as the eye can see.

There are breaks in the “tunnel” giving view to horse farms and wheat fields. As we stand on an old stone lock, a giant, red cutting machine makes its way through the wheat field headed directly toward us. It comes within spitting distance of us, the farmer nods hello and cuts sharply away.

We walk under the New York State Thruway and eventually arrive in Canawaugus Park, on Oatka Creek, in the village of Scottsville. We detour into town, enjoy pizza

Suddenly their mother appears, snorts, and they trot off to a cornfield where they stop and turn to watch us.

Way up on a hill to the east we see the campus of SUNY Geneseo overlooking the Genesee River valley. The river has now disappeared from sight but we come to a huge algae-covered swamp. Through binoculars we watch a great blue heron snatch frogs from the water, toss his long neck back, and let the frogs drop down almost three feet of bill and neck, to his stomach. In the same field of vision is his white counterpart, either a great white heron or an albino blue. A sharp-shinned hawk sweeps around the pond perimeter at treetop level and disappears. Above us a red-tailed hawk screams. I wonder who the lucky person might be that owns this land. We reach Route 63, in Piffard, by the Yard of Ale. • DAY FOUR Piffard to Mt. Morris – 8 miles Cutting behind houses, as the Greenway does, frequently gives sight to local resident’s “back side,” in some cases, virtual private junkyards. We pass along behind a house with what I would describe as “The history of American automobiles, farm equipment and major household appliances, all united by one common thread – rust.”

And speaking of automobiles, we get a kick out of the warning signs placed along the Greenway at almost every crossroad. They reflect that even though great pains were taken to create this hiking and biking trail, we are still an auto-centric society. The signs are positioned on the trail 450 feet before each road, cautioning us to slow down and watch for traffic, lest we careen into the road at 2.75 miles an hour and T-bone a passing car. We stop just north of the village of Mt. Morris • DAY FIVE Mt. Morris to Sonyea – 3 miles We walk southward through the village of Mt. Morris, well, behind the houses on Main Street, one of which is the former home of Francis Bellamy,

For a moment we feel like human bowling pins as adolescent dirt bikers buzz around us, pull wheelies, then go airborne over a ditch. We follow the well-cleared trail southward, along

cliff overlooking Keshequa Creek.

Finally we come to a dirt road and follow it more because it’s traversable than that it might be the right route. And it’s not. We walk right into a prison yard and have to retrace our way back to

Route 39, visible to passing cars just a few feet to our right. The trail cuts out to the pavement as if crossing the road.

But on the other side we see no sign of it. We consult our maps. An old Chevy with a primer-gray door pulls up. A guy in his 30s asks, “What are you looking for?”

“The Greenway, we lost it over there, just the other side of the road.”

“Oh, I used to walk that old rail bed as a kid. Go right through there.”

He points to a wall of trees, vines and undergrowth that look like the last human footsteps they’ve seen were his.

Seeing our quizzical expressions, he says, “I’d come with you, but” – and he pats the 12-pack on the seat next to him, “I’m watching the game and it’s starting right now.”

The harder we look for the rail bed of his youth, the tougher the going. Each potential outlet brings us to a dead end – an unscalable ravine or the edge of a

mile when a state guard pulls up and tells us we can’t leave our car back there because it is prison property. I leave my backpack and binoculars with Joanne and trot back to the car. I park it in a nearby abandoned gravel pit.

We head out along Ridge Road.

Just over a rise we come to another prison yard. The inmates are outside enjoying the summer day. A guard eyes us suspiciously. A few hundred feet further is an unforgettable spectacle: the old cemetery for the insane asylum that was once here. The graves go back to the early 1900s. There are thousands of them all the same size – tiny concrete posts with numbers on them, in row after row so that no matter what angle you look at them they form rows, like the nameless wire bristles on a hairbrush.

We walk through the village of Tuscarora, where we stop at the Country Buck Diner and Store for snacks. We continue, following Guile Road, to Creek Road, to Dudley Road, where we pick up the Greenway again

by Keshequa Creek. We call it a day and head back to our car.

• DAY SEVEN Dudley Road to Short Track Road – 6 miles We park on Dudley Road next to Keshequa Creek. Far ahead we see what appears to be people walking across the trail. The answer to this puzzle is that the Greenway crosses a golf course! We walk right through where people are preparing to tee off.

We say, “Hi,” and they look at us in amused surprise.

The trail again parallels the old Genesee Canal. Between Nunda and Portageville, for a distance of two miles, are 17 locks. We walk through another tunnel of trees. Far ahead in the tiny light at the end of the tunnel is a strange-shaped figure. As we get closer we see it is a woman photographer, under the cloak of a large-format camera on a tripod, taking our picture. We reach Short Track Road, eat our lunch and turn back.

• DAY EIGHT Short Track Road to Portageville – 6 miles

A short drive south from Rochester, at the western edge of the Finger Lakes region sits a natural gem, steeped in history and home to “Americana” Festivals.

We pass the railroad trestle over the Genesee River gorge at the south end of Letchworth Park. A sign says to keep off trestle. There are 50 people on the trestle, leaning over the railing, gazing at the water far below. It’s been a gradual climb for the last few miles, and suddenly we’re overlooking the river

jumping from stone to stone. We stop south of Portageville, just off Route 19A, at a place where the Finger Lakes Trail suddenly appears and joins OUR Greenway.

below, moving slowly under the bridge at Portageville. We walk-slide down the steep path to the road and cross the bridge. The solid, smooth pavement beneath our feet feels strange.

We sit on boulders on the river’s edge and eat our lunch.

Continuing on, we find someone has painted in white letters, “Entering God’s Country,” on a huge boulder.

Indeed, things are different here. In the last eight weekends we’ve worked our way upstream along the Genesee River, out of the river valley to the geologically-elevated southern tier. Here the riverbed is rocky. The summer water level is low and there are many places where we could walk across the river

cuts, to the highway so many times that, looking back, we can barely follow our own notes. We cross from Livingston into Allegheny County and come to a sign that says something to the effect of, “Private property, Greenway people not welcomed.” This means we should turn back, go to the highway, and circumvent this large farm. But we decide to keep going and to try walk along the uncharted river-

bank. After 30 minutes of trying to get through wet backwaters and thorny underbrush, making no headway, ankles slashed by thorns and reeds, we head back. We finally reach Route 19A, having wasted more than an hour in that detour. We walk along the shoulder of the road and finally stop, short of Fillmore, in a small clump of white pines. We climb under the pines, out of the sun, eat our lunch and head back.

• DAY 10 West River Road to Caneadea – 8 miles By now, we’ve read several pieces about the Greenway on the Internet and in local newspapers. Each writer bicycled the trail. None mention what we found to be one of the highlights of our own Greenway experience: bald eagles. When cycling along, you must keep your eye on the quirky ground surface. Walking allows you to look around. We saw a bald eagle hanging in the air over the river in Portageville, we saw two over the river near Houghton, and during a third weekend we saw one near Houghton, flying up from the river’s surface. We stop at Caneadea, sit on the steps of an old church, eat our lunch and head back.

• DAY 11 Caneadea to Rockville – 8 miles The old church is really hopping, hosting a chicken dinner and we have to park down the road from it. A few buildings south of the church on Route 19A, we pass a huge country gift shop. I am informed by Joanne that we will have to come back here with wheels.

We walk all the way to Rockville, a hidden cluster of half-a-dozen houses just off Route 350, south of Belfast, where we turn around and head back. It is a hot day. We are exhausted.

as lightning explodes around us. There is nowhere to get shelter and nothing to be gained by stopping. We push on, drenched and virtually blinded by the rain. We come to a side road and an ornate old barn, probably from the mid1800s. We run up to it and huddle under its generous eaves. The day had been so hot just minutes earlier, and now the temperature and pressure have dropped, forcing the hot air that has built up inside the barn outward, rush-

going; flat ground and smooth surface through picturesque farmland. Even though arriving at Jackson Hill Road in the tiny settlement of North Cuba is a non-event, we sit down on the path and savor the moment.

With the sound of jet skis coming over the hill from Cuba Lake, less than half-a-mile away, I think about our 12 weekends on the trail. They seem like 12 years in terms of depth and breadth of experience.

The lightning stops and the rain lessens. It has rained so hard and so long that the trail is now filled with water, which is rushing along like a creek, and we are walking and stumbling along through it with little whitewater rapids around our ankles. We are so relieved that the lightning has stopped that we stomp through the water like children.

Indeed, walking this old canal and railroad corridor, with its historical significance, its mile-after-mile of silence and natural beauty, its other friendly walkers and cyclers, its disjunct sections, mudslides, potholes, bridges out, and open highway legs, along with nature’s sudden summer downpours, and our own miscalculations and wrong turns – all of this is a metaphor for life.

A very good life. One that brings a smile to our faces each time we recall it, and one that has pushed us on to other walking experiences in the New York countryside.

Eileen Collins: “Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.”

t’s a pity Mark Twain and Eileen Collins never met. But their common denominator is the town of Elmira, in the Chemung Valley south of Seneca Lake. Twain spent two decades of summers writing three of his famous novels there. And Elmira is the hometown of Collins, NASA’s first woman pilot astronaut and space shuttle commander, and the location from which she launched her flying career.

Recently I spoke by phone with Collins, a retired Air Force colonel, in her office at the Johnson Space Center in Houston. She will soon command the space shuttle Discovery, formally referred to by NASA as STS-114. The mission marks the shuttle’s return to flight after the Columbia accident two years ago. She graciously made time in her work schedule to share some memories about growing up in the Finger Lakes.

“As a youngster, I would visit Seneca or Keuka Lakes for a summer vacation,” Collins related. “We didn’t own a cottage. We rented a cottage on the lake, or we stayed in a friend’s cottage. It would make for a nice getaway on the lake. This was obviously before the era of jet skis, so we would go canoeing or kayaking. We would spend some family time together for a week or two.”

“We” refers to her two brothers, her sister, and her parents, James E. and Rose Marie Collins. When she got older, they would visit the wineries surrounding the lakes. The inflection changed as she remembered one particular anecdote: “One place had a beehive with honey. You could go in and buy a hunk of it and eat it straight out of the hive.”

Watkins Glen State Park remains one of Collins’ favorite spots. She recalled that Paul Newman visited its racetrack in the 1960s and 1970s. Although she did not attend his races, Collins painted a sweeping portrait of the park, the waterfall, the gorge and the huge Olympic swimming pool. She added: “I visited there last summer. I return to the area, now with my family, once every year or two.”

Nurtured in the Soaring Capital of America The Elmira-Corning Regional Airport and the neighboring glider field at Harris Hill hold special places in Collins’ heart as fond Finger Lakes memories.

A passion for aviation captured Collins’ attention even in childhood. A popular science fiction television show mesmerized her with flying. Collins’ parents would frequently take her to the airport to watch the planes take off and land. She spent summer camp near Harris Hill, watching the gliders soar overhead. But her family never had the money for flying lessons or even for a ride in an airplane.

The desire to fly continued to build.

Then Collins stumbled across a pivotal question in Junior Scholastic magazine. She was attending St. Patrick’s School in Elmira at the time. “I remember reading an article called ‘Pro Versus Con: Should We Spend Money on the Space Program or Not?’” reported Collins in a NASA video interview years later. “As I read that article, I could not understand why anybody would say no. It was obvious to me, as a fourth grader, that we needed to learn about space. I was more fascinated with what we didn’t know rather than what we did know. That was when I started learning about the astronauts and their backgrounds, and figuring out what you needed to do to become an astronaut.

From that point on, I was always very interested in space.

What did inspire me was the Gemini program, which led to the Apollo program and the moon landings.”

As a 16-year-old high school student at Elmira Free Academy, Collins began working at Pudgies Pizza. By age 19 she had saved up $1,000 to pay for flying lessons at the local airport. She spent the summers of 1977 and 1978 mostly off the ground. Collins’ flight instructor and inspiration was A.J. Davis, a former F-4 pilot in Vietnam.

He started her in Cessna aircraft. She eventually earned her glider license, a tribute to her birthplace.

Earning Astronaut Wings Elmira’s homegrown flygirl left the area for the Air Force in August 1978.

That same year, Collins arrived at another crossroads in her life. She elaborated about it in a NASA video interview: “I saw that there was an opportunity to apply to be an astronaut. I decided I wanted to be an astronaut in 1978. It was also the year that I graduated from college [with a

bachelor of arts degree in mathematics and economics from Syracuse University], and the first year that NASA selected women for the space shuttle program. That’s when the career of being an astronaut first became a reality to me, and when I really started looking forward to doing this someday.”

But first Collins had to build a flying career that would attract the attention of the NASA folks. She attended Air Force undergraduate pilot training at Vance Air Force Base (AFB) in Enid, Oklahoma, staying on after graduation as a T-38 instructor pilot. Later, at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs, Collins served as an assistant professor in mathematics, one of her favorite subjects, and as a T-41 instructor pilot.

During this time, Collins twice applied for selection as an Air Force candidate for NASA’s subsequent selection as an astronaut. The military declined her both times. She did not have proper qualifications, from the perspective of the Air Force, to be detailed to the astronaut program.

Collins explained that rationalization to me during our chat: “One has to be releasable by the Air Force. That depends on time on service, time on station, and several other factors. I had to go through two selection boards, not just one: one at the Air Force and one at NASA.” Meanwhile Collins taxied closer to the runway of her space career. She attended the Air Force Test Pilot School at Edwards AFB in California.

At last the military felt she was fully qualified for astronaut wings. Collins applied once to NASA, in 1989, both as a pilot astronaut and as a mission specialist or scientist astronaut. The following year she got in as a pilot astro in NASA’s Group 13, nicknamed the Hairballs.

Collins did. They worked together during the summer of 1990 as astronauts-in-training. “I gave her a bunch of grief in survival school,” he recently revealed to me.

Gregory, with his characteristic good humor and sharp wit, summarized one “corny” episode that occurred while the class practiced parachute landing falls during parasailing training in Enid. “We were driving to our destination [on Vance AFB] when Eileen said, ‘Hey, turn here. I’ll show you where I lived.’ I said, ‘Are you kidding?! We’re on a strict time schedule! We can’t divert our direction!’ But she was adamant about showing us her home.” The incident typified Collins’ class nickname of Mom.

Three Flights on Orbit, and Counting During my phone interview with Collins, we named off several astronauts who have deep roots in upstate New York. Ed Lu considers Webster, outside of Rochester, his hometown. Bill Gregory hails from the Niagara region, just west of the Finger Lakes. Collins jumped in with “Pam Melroy is from Rochester.”

The name of NASA’s second woman pilot astronaut triggered another memory from Collins: the National Women’s Hall of Fame, located in Seneca Falls. “I receive an invitation every year to their induction ceremony. Eight to 10 women are inducted every year.” Collins modestly did not divulge that she herself was inducted there in 1995, when she flew as NASA’s first woman shuttle pilot that February.

That milestone space flight, STS-63, was also the shuttle’s historic first rendezvous with the Russian space station Mir. Astronaut Jim Wetherbee, a native of Long Island, commanded the mission. A Navy test pilot before landing at NASA, he spent over a year in training with Collins prior to launch.

“By the time we flew,” Wetherbee recently recounted to me via e-mail, “I had great confidence in her ability to perform complicated procedures with no mistakes. She was very precise. We had a very challenging set of procedures late in the flight on one of the secondary events. Other astronauts may not have spent enough time studying the secondaries, but she was flawless on orbit. I had no doubt that she would be prepared, and she was.”

Wetherbee continued: “Probably the thing I like about her the most is that she was never motivated by the publicity surrounding her career and accomplishments. She simply wants to fly. She was the perfect choice to be the first woman pilot, with all the potential for high stress and added distractions. … She accepts her responsibilities as a role model. … [During STS-63] the pressure must have been intense, but she just ignored it. At least it appeared that way. She’s so good at it, I’m sure she spent time thinking about it. But it was not obvious that it affected her.

She’s a real pro.”

Ed Lu made his rookie astronaut flight on STS-84, Collins’ second mission as pilot. They rendezvoused and docked with Mir, seeing firsthand how a space station operates. “She was a great crewmate,” enthused Lu to me recently. “She is one of my favorite crewmates that I flew with. She is always pleasant to be around. She looks out for each crewmate.”

What qualities and skills did Lu see Collins display that prepared her for being a commander on her next space flight? “During our flight training, I was impressed with her flying in the T-38s,” Lu related. “She exercised good judgment, where you put yourself in a situation where things work out.

That’s also the mark of a good pilot.

She doesn’t take unnecessary chances.

Her flying was very smooth.” Lu, a private pilot himself, further commented: “Everybody in the [astronaut] office likes her. She is one of the most-liked astronauts. She is very much a smalltown girl. She is very grounded.”

The assignment of Collins as the first woman shuttle commander on STS-93 was deemed significant enough to announce at the White House on March 5, 1998. Collins and her crew of four astronauts deployed the Chandra X-Ray Observatory in July 1999.

Ironically, that first command – Collins’ most recent stint orbiting Earth – was flown aboard shuttle Columbia. As a poignant result, expect

to see homage from Collins and her crew of six to their seven astronaut friends who were lost on Columbia. STS114 Discovery will dock to the International Space Station (ISS) this summer.

I asked Collins if there was anything she would like to say directly to individuals in her hometown area, the Finger Lakes community.

“There are a lot of things,” Collins replied. She pondered for a moment, collecting her thoughts. Then she answered with standard astronaut succinctness: “People need to know that shuttle flights are very important to complete the ISS. We need the station research to go to the moon and to Mars.” NASA is of course focused on fulfilling President Bush’s mandate, issued over a year ago, for humans to explore beyond Earth’s vicinity.

On the personal level, how does her family feel about her life in the spotlight? Collins met her husband while both of them were flying C-141 military cargo planes. Pat Youngs, a golf coach formerly at the Air Force Academy (“an excellent amateur golfer,” remarked Gregory), now flies for Delta Air Lines. In her NASA return-to-flight video interview last year, Collins highlighted how his flying background is an asset to her career: “He really understands the flying environment. He understands the risks involved in flying. He has been just tremendously supportive.” The two aviators have a 9-year-old daughter and a 4-year-old son.

Elmira’s adopted author Mark Twain humorously proclaimed himself a liar. Elmira’s native flygirl Eileen Collins has not had reason to soar to the dark side. In the words of Hairball astronaut Ken Cockrell: “Eileen is as transparently honest as they come.”

aine-based photographer Chuck Feil wanted to show us a different view of familiar Finger Lakes places. To do that, he spent countless hours flying 500 feet above ground, searching for breathtaking pictures that best portrayed the colorful, textured landscapes he saw.

His vision is captured in The Finger Lakes Region of New York – A View from Above. Using “Rooty Kazooty,” a two-seater gyroplane he calls his chariot in the sky, Chuck shot about 3,000 photos, flying at speeds as slow as 5 miles per hour.

“I look for scenes that attract and interest the eye,” he said. “I want shots that people normally don’t see, views that challenge their eyes and mindsets. If the book inspires someone to see things in a different way, then I’ve accomplished my goal.”

Chuck had been a photographer for over 20 years before becoming a pilot in 1992. When he grew more comfortable and confident in the air, he started looking down. What he saw inspired him to unite his two passions – photography and flying.

His book includes over 150 pages of aerial photographs shot between spring and fall 2004. Before The Finger Lakes Region of New York – A View from Above, Chuck and coauthor Ernie Rose published eight other aerial photography books of different regions of the United States through their company, VFA Publishing.

Here, Chuck guides us through some of the images featured in the book, explaining his inspirations, techniques and hopes for what readers will discover.

“We chose a picture of Keuka Lake in the morning for the cover shot of the book. The early morning fog mirroring the snake-like quality of the lake – it’s fascinating, a spectacular shot.

“When I take a shot, it’s based on a mood, a feeling.

I often go up with the intention of just capturing the day and I’ll find myself going in a direction different than what I expected.

“I chose to do a book on the Finger Lakes after hearing friends in Ithaca speak fondly of the area. I wasn’t familiar with the region, but my curiosity was piqued.

The legacy of Cohocton’s Orson S. Fowler

S

cattered here and there throughout the Finger Lakes region you’ll find these curious octagonal structures – on a village street, nestled against a wooded hillside, overlooking a scenic valley or vineyard. They’re conspicuous and engaging in their angular quirkiness. Often with a large cupola protruding from the center of a gently sloping roof, or sporting an encircling veranda, each has its peculiar history and an appealing story.

Octagonal houses and buildings can be traced to antiquity, but their notable presence in New York State, particularly in and around the Finger Lakes, is no accident. Here the major proponent of their construction had his roots, but before his fascination with octagons surfaced, his life followed a much different path.

Orson Squire Fowler was born October 11, 1809 in a simple log farmhouse on the present site of the municipal building in Cohocton, Steuben County. One of the first white children

born in the tiny pioneer settlement, the youngster saw Cohocton erect its first sawmill, tannery, and schoolhouse.

Raised in a literate and devout family, and blessed with an active and fertile mind, Orson was influenced by his mother to write and encouraged by his father to enter the ministry. After taking preparatory studies with various clergy, he moved on to Ashfield Academy and eventually Amherst College in Massachusetts.

At Amherst Fowler befriended Henry Ward Beecher, later one of the great reform speakers of the day. The two attended a lecture by noted

Austrian doctor, Johann Spurzheim, and were immediately taken with his odd topic, analyzing a person’s behavior and character by examining the bumps and contours of the cranium, all expressed in a refined language. The friends became immersed in this new science of phrenology, even earning money on the side with their own examinations and lectures. Fowler recalled that his fellow students “flocked around me, all curious to hear what I would say about them‌â€?

Choosing a Path After graduation in 1834, Fowler chose to forsake the ministry and vigorously set out to make a career of phrenology and other curiosities inhabiting his active mind. His philosophical interests were many and varied: from perfection of the human character to memory, from the benefits of fresh air to heredity, from careful selection of food and avoidance of Circle Reader Service Number 144 stimulants to magnetism.

In New York City, with his brother Lorenzo and other family members, Fowler created a dynasty – lecturing, reading craniums, writing books and essays, and publishing. Tourists beat a path to the door of the Fowler Phrenological Institute to see its fascinating collection of skulls, used both for research and museum purposes.

Having a cranial reading done by the Fowlers became a fashionable event for common folk and celebrities alike. As the prominent heads of a phrenological empire, the Fowlers became famous, wealthy and respected.

At the same time, their pseudoscience was sometimes satirized in the press, the institute once referred to as the firm of “Bumpus and Crane.� Even Mark Twain, always the skeptic and 'J OJ T IJ OH BOE .

But as described by writer Carl Carmer, “Orson Fowler, with distinguished, flowing beard, high forehead, strong nose, and piercing blue eyes, continued to expound his phrenological and moral ideas from the lecture platform.” In Fowler’s mind, phrenology opened the door to individual selfimprovement, and he tirelessly promoted his beliefs. Phrenology influenced much of accepted 19th century thinking on the motivation of behaviors, even finding its way into the works of Poe, Whitman, Melville, and other noted writers of the day.

As years passed, the business remained active, profitable and in reliable hands. Fowler, a bit eccentric and ever the innovative thinker, grew eager to indulge himself in yet another compulsion – architecture and design.

Home Sweet Octagonal Home When in 1848 Fowler wrote and published his small volume, A Home for All: or a New, Cheap, Convenient, and Superior Mode of Building, the fad of the “Octagon Mode” was born. One reviewer called the book “novel,” saying, “Mr. Fowler’s architectural aphorisms are sensible, but peculiar.” The book went through multiple printings.

Fowler’s theories and innovations were received with enthusiasm by imaginative readers infatuated by his melding of science and nature.

The heyday of the octagon building was underway. With a flourish, over the next decade or so, a few thousand of the odd structures popped up, casting their irregular shadows on the American landscape.

Today, by most estimates, less than 500 octagon buildings remain standing, a good many of them still dotting the Finger Lakes countryside. Some were built in a grand style utilizing Fowler’s most innovative suggestions, others in a more humble fashion matching the needs, financial means, and carpentry abilities of their owners. Materials used ran the gamut from wood to brick, from masonry to cobblestone.

For many reasons, Fowler considered the circle as found in nature to be the ideal form, and far superior to the constraints found in the square or rectangle. “The spherical is more beautiful than the angular,” he wrote, “and the smooth and undulating more beautiful than the rough and projecting.”

He chose the octagon as the most practical approximation of the circle to test his theories for a healthy, convenient and economical living environment – in essence, a circle created with straight lumber.

In his writings Fowler extolled many functional and stylistic virtues of the Octagon Mode: • Floor space increased by 20 percent for the octagon over any foursided structure requiring the same amount of construction material and expense.

• Most rooms remained rectangular – odd shaped corners adapted to closets, cupboards and other “nooks and crannies” for storage.

• Superior aesthetics. Novel features were encouraged, such as dumb waiters, speaking tubes, and even indoor toilets.

• Large number of windows yielded more natural sunlight, better ventilation, thus cooler in the summer.

Easier conservation of heat during the winter months.

• “Grout” (consisting of lime, sand, and gravel) promoted as a building material – considered more substantial than brick or wood, and less expensive.

Both provide a fine opportunity for visitors’ questions, and their unusual features, history, and décor can be viewed up close with able assistance from informed guides. The Hyde House, built in Friendship, Allegany County shortly after the Civil War, was moved to the Genesee Country Village in Mumford in 1980. Julia and Erastus Hyde were spiritualists, and after their deaths occurred within two days of one another, it was believed their spirits continued to occupy the eight-sided home.

Museum officials take great pride in the Hyde House and will verify some odd occurrences relating to the building. Another fine example of Fowler’s theories remains in Camillus, Onondaga County.

Continue searching and you’ll find a red schoolhouse near Ithaca, a barn tucked behind a home on Clinton Street in Penn Yan, a small frame house on West Street in Naples, a cobblestone utility building (once a smithy’s shop) in Alloway, a farmhouse (once rumored as a stop on the Underground Railroad) along Route 53 near Prattsburg, a tidy dwelling and matching barn in Homer, an attractive brick residence on a neighborhood street in Syracuse, and many more. Octagons all.

As for Orson S. Fowler, in the same year that he authored his famous volume, A Home for All, he began a master project of his own, a huge, four-story, 60-room octagon house in Fishkill, New York, overlooking the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains. Referred to by the local folk as “Fowler’s Folly,” work on the project continued on and off for over a decade. Progress would periodically stall, Fowler then setting out on lecture tours and other ventures to replenish his funds and renew his vitality for the task.

Orson Fowler died in August, 1887 after a full life of lecturing, writing, publishing – and thinking. His Fishkill octagon went through many ownerships and uses over the years, but in 1897, vacant, deteriorating and determined as unsafe by town authorities, it was razed.

Much of Orson Squire Fowler’s “scientific” work in phrenology was later discredited, but many of his ideas were ahead of their time. As for the Octagon Mode, Fowler would, no doubt, be proud to know that so many remnants of his inventive notions still stand in the region of his birth, and that they continue to draw interest to this day. In the end, the pioneer boy who once walked the woods and fished the streams of Cohocton left his indelible mark on the Finger Lakes landscape.

later added law school professor Charles Evans Hughes as a client.

Hughes would have a profound influence on Moreland’s future.

“People encouraged my grandfather to enter politics because he could leave an audience spellbound, and in those days being an accomplished orator was a major plus for a young politician,” Sherman III said.

Moreland also came to the attention of J. Sloat Fassett of Elmira, a former state senator and unsuccessful Republican gubernatorial candidate in 1891, who represented Chemung County in Congress from 1905 to 1911.

With Fassett’s backing, Moreland won an Assembly seat and served from 1903 through 1907. Moreland’s Republican colleagues elected him majority leader for his final two years in Albany despite his inexperience.

A Mover and Shaker Hughes, Moreland’s former law professor, was now governor and the pair teamed up to give the young legislator his first shot at notoriety. Hughes ran on an anti-corruption platform, building on his work as counsel to a legislative committee investigating New York’s insurance department.

In April 1907, Moreland introduced a bill authorizing the governor “at any time…to examine and investigate the management and affairs of any department, board, bureau or commission of the state.”

Moreland’s proposal gave the governor subpoena power, enabling him to question witnesses under oath. The legislation also applied to local governments and required the governor to appoint investigating boards at least every three years.

In his 1946 book, The Moreland Act – Executive Inquiry in the State of New York, Brooklyn College Professor J. Ellswerth Missall writes that foes attacked the bill because it “modified the traditional pattern of governmental procedure. The power to investigate was formerly delegated only to the Legislature…”

Moreland deleted the three-year requirement and the “what and when to investigate” and the bill passed the Assembly without opposition. In June 1907, the Senate voted 30-4 for passage and Governor Hughes signed the Moreland Act. “The essence of the original legislation is its simplicity,” Moreland told the New York Globe. “The new bill is due more to a desire for proper bookkeeping and accounting methods than to any wish to expose anything in the

way of departmental scandals.”

Through the years, Moreland Act Commissions have probed an array of government activities from harness racing to bingo to prisons to the state Liquor Authority.

Moreland’s prominence sparked a “boomlet” for governor that fizzled when the campaign “couldn’t come up with the dough,” Sherman III said.

“After that, he didn’t think he’d go anywhere in the state so he left politics.”

More Political Ambitions Moreland soon traded the state scene for the international stage.

Theodore Roosevelt appointed Moreland to the Filipino Supreme Court in the closing months of his presidency in 1909 and the country lawyer, wife Mary Ellen and sons Henry and Sherman Jr. journeyed to Manila.

An American on the Filipino Supreme Court?

The United States acquired the Philippines following the SpanishAmerican War and in preparing the islands for eventual independence, Washington decided the court should contain an equal number of American and Filipino associate justices with a Filipino serving as chief justice.

Moreland also served as acting dean of the University of the Philippines College Law for three months in 1911.

By 1916, Moreland began looking homeward. His mentor Hughes had resigned from the U.S. Supreme Court to run for president against Democratic incumbent Woodrow Wilson.

“Grandfather learned he was on Hughes’s short list for secretary of state,” Sherman III said.

It was not to be. Hughes lost California by fewer than 4,000 votes and with them went the 13 electoral votes he needed to defeat Wilson.

Historians believe that California Governor Hiram Johnson’s “disaffection” for Hughes cost the GOP candidate the presidency. Johnson had been Roosevelt’s running mate on the Progressive ticket that split the Republican vote in 1912 and allowed Wilson his first term. Hughes, although an earlier Roosevelt backer, stood with the more conservative Republicans.

“Johnson and Hughes had tremendous egos as well as philosophical differences,” Sherman III said. “Johnson held court in the penthouse of the Mark Hopkins Hotel in San Francisco and Hughes was on a lower floor. Well, Hughes thought since he was the nom-

inee, Johnson should come down to see him. But Johnson felt that Hughes should come up to his rooms. They eventually did meet, but Johnson didn’t campaign very hard for Hughes and California was lost.”

How might Moreland have fared as secretary of state during the World War I and post-war eras?

“He was a progressive thinker,” his grandson said. “A smart man…he picked things up quickly. He taught himself Spanish on the boat to the Philippines because the court opinions were in that language.

“With his experience in the Philippines, I think he’d be less apt to be prejudiced on the basis of ethnicity and that was a different outlook for his time. Hughes was an internationalist, maybe not as insular as a lot of people were in this country, and I think he

and grandfather would have meshed very well.”

Ironically, Hughes became secretary of state under Presidents Harding and Coolidge and later served as chief justice of the Supreme Court.

Moreland left the Philippines in 1918 and accepted a commission as a major in the army judge advocate general’s office in Washington. He earned promotions to lieutenant colonel in 1919 and colonel in 1920 when he headed the administrative law division.

The Trial of Billy Mitchell In 1925, the army began court martial proceedings against Colonel Billy Mitchell, who accused army and navy leaders of incompetence and “almost treasonable administration of the national defense” for not fully recognizing the potential of airpower.

As judge advocate, Moreland directed the army’s prosecution of Mitchell. Moreland wanted to limit the evidence to the charge of insubordination but correctly predicted that the court would bow to political pressure and allow Mitchell to introduce his views on airpower and the army’s and navy’s alleged negligence.

Moreland left much of the prosecution to his assistant, Major Allen Gullion, but delivered a powerful closing statement.

Described as bespectacled and gruff voiced in “The Billy Mitchell Affair” by Burke Davis, Moreland told the court: “…for every moment since the war we have had the ablest general staff in the world as far as I can read history…How is Colonel Mitchell going to be left in the army?

As to his complete dedication to the best interests of the service, and if the court itself does not feel that that would be the proper thing to do…nothing can be permanently helpful to any people except the spirit that is in their own hearts, when dedicated by their love for their native land. That is what makes a patriot; that is what will expel from your midst every man who does not meet these requirements.”

The 13-judge panel, which included General Douglas MacArthur, found Mitchell guilty of insubordination, and suspended him from active duty without pay for five years. Mitchell resigned his commission Feb. 1, 1926 and died a decade later.

Moreland retired from the army in 1929 and returned to Van Etten where he practiced law until the mid-1940s.

He died at 83 on Dec. 27, 1951 and is buried in a rural cemetery near his boyhood home.

Four years later, Otto Preminger directed Gary Cooper, Rod Steiger and Elizabeth Montgomery in “The Court Martial of Billy Mitchell.” Veteran character actor Fred Clark portrayed Colonel Moreland.

Hollywood followed the lead of most Mitchell biographers by treating him as a heroic figure.

“Grandfather was a villain in the movie,” Sherman III said. “It was another Sergeant York-type role for Gary Cooper…the big hero. To me, though, my grandfather was a hero. We talked often and he always played down his accomplishments. Cornell wanted to honor him, but he felt he hadn’t done anything to deserve any special attention. He never tooted his horn.”

It’s these impressive facts, plus many more, that provided the inspiration behind the creation of the Ontario County Agricultural Adventure Trail.

Two years in the making, the “Agventure Trail” is a celebration of all things agricultural in Ontario County. A little over 100 miles long, the trail starts in the northwest part of the county in Victor, winds south around Canandaigua Lake to Naples, east to Seneca Lake and Geneva, and finally west back across the county to end in Farmington.

MARINAS egories. “Attractions” are open to the public and include stores, markets and farms. “Look for This” includes farms, cobblestone houses and other things of agricultural interest. Not that a dairy farmer wouldn’t mind the help during milking, but these stops are generally not open to the public. They’re designated because of their agricultural significance or just because they are interesting. “Made Locally” are mostly farms and farm markets and “Wine and Dine” are wineries and Finger Lakes Culinary Bounty-affiliated restaurants.

The Agventure Trail starts, both chronologically and geographically, at the Ganondagan State Historic Site in Victor. For hundreds of years prior to the 1600s, Ganondagan was the home of the Seneca Indians, the area’s first farmers. You can tour a full-size replica of a 17th-century Seneca Bark Longhouse, walk miles of self-guided trails, or climb the mesa where a huge granary stored hundreds of thousands of bushels of corn.

From there, the trail winds through Ionia to Lazy Acre Alpacas in Bloomfield. Raising alpacas is an example of one of the newest forms of farming in Ontario County. Small cousins of camels and llamas, alpacas are known for the quality of their fleece. Lazy Acres owner Mark Gilbride, who might be considered the modern gentleman farmer, describes the area as perfect for raising alpacas.

“The summers are not too hot, the winters are usually not too cold or long, and there is plenty of high quality pasture grass available, which is their main diet.”

The trail then runs west on historic Routes 5 & 20 towards Canandaigua to Vintage Tracks Museum, the home of over 200 tractors and farm implements dating back to 1918. From there, the trail runs south through the charming hamlet of Cheshire towards Naples. Traveling down Route 21 along Canandaigua

Lake, you will notice that grape vines start to replace bales of straw in the fields. At this point in the tour, you will have to make a decision, as there are three potential routes to take. One route goes north to Route 96 and west through Phelps, known for its cabbage production. If you happen to be traveling through Phelps during the first week of August, don’t miss the chance to stop at the famous Phelps Sauerkraut Festival.

A second route to consider is Route 4 through Seneca Castle and Hopewell. This route will take you past Pedersen Farms, a grower of hops for local breweries. Once a leading specialty crop in the area, this agricultural product disappeared from the landscape over 50 years ago because of disease, insects and prohibition. A glass of Ithaca Beer Company’s Double IPA will dispel any doubts that local hops are back and have a bright future.

The third route to consider is Routes 5 & 20 through Flint. After you have stopped at Red Jacket Orchards for a bag of Empire or Northern Spy (what else?) apples, you can visit Abbey Farm and experience a Victorian-era farmstead.

No matter which route you choose, the trip back west through the county should definitely include a stop at Willow Pond Aqua Farms, where you can stroll through their water garden and see yet another type of agriculture, where waterplants and fish are raised.

With over 50 stops, you will probably have to pick and choose where you want to visit on your daytrip. Regardless of your choices, the Agventure Trail is a great way to explore Ontario County’s abundant agricultural attractions, sights and history.

Francois Boeres Keeps Tradition Alive The creator of the Cortland County Farm Museum shares his collections

C

ortland, like so many upstate areas, blossomed and prospered because of New York’s fertile farmlands.

From their first cash crop, potash, settlers who trickled into the area along the Tioughnioga River beginning in 1791, forged a new life on the tillable acres they reclaimed from this once heavily wooded region.

Agriculture, still the heart and soul of the county, has been replaced as the economic foundation here by the manufacturing, light industry and service business sectors. This county on the eastern fringe of the Finger Lakes region, nevertheless, continues to generate revenues of $45 million per year according to most recent U.S. Census of Agriculture data. And that is being accomplished in spite of the makeover of the current agricultural landscape that has seen the number of farms decline while acreage per farm and yield per acre have increased.

The advent of modern technology and equipment hastened this phenomenon, challenging the memories of early farming. Francois Boeres, though, had developed an inquisitive love for the pioneering days of farming when he was young, and his entrepreneurial determination to preserve agriculture’s storied tradition led him to open the Cortland County Farm Museum. For anyone interested in what made farming tick years ago, time stands still here.

Boeres, the owner, curator, and extra-added attraction in his own right, of this independent museum, doesn’t let much grass grow under his feet. Or herbs for that matter.

Whether it’s explaining how a 125-year-old thrasher worked, guiding a tour group along the two nature paths that cut through his farmland exploring for the more than 100 remedial plants, shrubs and trees on the property, or showing a guest the soon-to-be-published book he wrote on local farming, Boeres is accessible and available. But he wants the museum to be an informal experience for visitors so he remains in the background until called upon.

The thrasher (two functioning steam engines used in the early conversion days are on loan to an Ohio museum) is one example of the diverse pieces of farming’s past he has gathered at his 185-year-old, 100-acre farm on a picturesque hilltop about 20 miles east of the city of Cortland. Boeres has collected enough timeless trappings that he has turned his quaint homestead into a tribute to the early days of agriculture in New York state.

to see and touch things that you may not be able to find anywhere else.

Anyone expecting to find the usual museum atmosphere will be pleasantly surprised. And you just can’t place a value on Francois. Visitors will be in the company of a hospitable, knowledgeable host who comes packed with passion and answers.”

Dempsey also believes the museum will interest people in or out of agriculture, and whether they are young or old. “It is very much a familyoriented experience,” he says.

Visitors will easily recognize the museum as more of a labor of love for Boeres than a business. It is open by appointment from May through October and there is no admission, but donations are accepted. Boeres estimates the number of visitors at more than 600 yearly, whether individuals, families, civic organizations or school groups. He likes to keep group tours in the neighborhood of 20 to 35 people so everyone has the opportunity to participate and ask questions.

A Growing Collection Boeres has been acquiring items for the museum, primarily in upstate New York, for more than 40 years, but he can track his enthusiasm for the subject to 1939 and another continent.

“I became intrigued with farming, its history and tools, the day I watched a farmer back home in Luxembourg hook up a horse-drawn plow to a new tractor and send the horse to pasture,” he says. Since moving to Cortland County in the ’60s, he has collected a cross-section of equipment on his farm that is representative of the area’s rich agricultural heritage. A Need for Change They didn’t sell the business because they couldn’t find interested chefs willing to cook the old way, Boeres says. It should come as no surprise that tradition is a way of life for Boeres.

It was the importance of preserving tradition that motivated Boeres to begin buying outdated farm equipment from his Cortland neighbors while running the restaurant. He found most of the equipment on display at the museum within a 30-mile radius of the farm. There are about 750 items on exhibit, mostly in the barn, which is the main museum component. The centerpiece of the barn is an authentic re-creation of a blacksmith shop. A proud naturalized citizen, not to mention a true Renaissance man, Boeres also counts American history as an interest and there are four prominent display cases containing memorabilia – including vintage muskets that can still be loaded and fired – spanning the Revolutionary War to World War II in a section of the barn. That also goes for the retooled civil war cannon that has added a boom to a few family blasts over the years.

Boeres says he can’t put a price on the museum and his collection because he measures its worth in historic and sentimental value.

“My fascination with farming began when I was a kid,” Boeres says.

“I was captivated as farmers embraced the new farm machinery even though it meant abandoning their time-proven horse-drawn equipment. As I watched them cut off the shaft and then attach it to the modern equipment, I remember thinking progress is inevitable but the past should not be forgotten.”

While it was out-with-the-oldand-in-with-the-new for the Luxembourg farmers, it was the old ways that made the lasting impression – and the kernel that produced the Cortland County Farm Museum – on young Boeres.

crown jewel of the museum is the farmhouse with its eclectic collection of books, music, antiques and knickknacks. “We’ve made alterations to the house and added modern conveniences to make life more comfortable, but we have kept much of our home as true to its past as possible,” Boeres says.

Occasionally, the Boeres fire-up and cook on their 1930 wood- and coalburning stove. The farmhouse, which is opened to the public, is among the oldest in the area.

A Man of Many Talents Boeres is a guy who does not take his passions lightly. His book on the history of upstate farming, Two Centuries of Farming in Central New York, is due out before the end of the year. The book is based on the research and information he recorded talking with the old-time farmers and neighbors who sold him equipment. It is illustrated with diagrams he drew showing the mechanics of the equipment.

Boeres also has finished a second book dealing with cooking, His-story of Good Cooking. It contains 350 recipes from around the world, which he collected working as a master chef.

Both books are self-published with the cookbook produced by an Internet publisher.

Even with the books, barn, farm equipment and the rainbow of other collectables that capture the imagination of most visitors, Boeres still considers the farmhouse, as original as the host, the staple of the museum’s collection.

A thirsty visitor, however, might think otherwise. The well, sunk when the original farmhouse was built almost two hundred years ago, still works.

Lime Hollow’s new facility, scheduled to open this summer, will overlook an expansive natural vista with an existing large pond in the foreground and rolling hills on the horizon.

Just three miles north of Cortland is its next-door neighbor, Homer. A walk down Main Street past the 19th century commercial buildings, old stately mansions and homes representing styles of architecture prevalent throughout the past 200 years can be a nostalgic trip down memory lane. Causal dining, gift shops and clothing retail stores appeal to browsers old and young.

Happily Ever After Books at 6 Main Street is a cozy bookstore which offers author signings and readings, American Girl literature, and books to please those from crib to iPod. Collaborative literary and nature events occur regularly with Lime Hollow Center for Environment and Culture. “We’re happy to present authors that people wouldn’t necessarily get a chance to meet,� states sales associate Jennifer Jones. Even on a rainy day one can snuggle up on the wicker loveseat in the front window and become absorbed in a good book.

The Homeville Museum on 43 Clinton Street contains ample and varied railroad and military memorabilia.

The massive collection of model trains downstairs runs through several rooms as it winds its way through hills and cities, freightyards, bridges, and tunnels.

Out in the yard, you’ll find a 1942 World War II paratrooper’s folding bicycle, a 1952 Korean War army truck, a quarter ton Army cannon jeep, and a

Homer offers a number of community events during the year at local businesses, the Center for the Arts of Homer on Main Street, or at the Village Green. Durkee Park, located on Route 11 one-half mile north of the center of the village of Homer, has a pavilion, picnic facilities, fishing spots, and a playground with newly installed equipment in a beautiful and quiet setting for the whole family to enjoy.

Theatre and drama fans will be entertained by a variety of performances by the Cortland Repertory Theatre.

The theatre plays 10-week seasons in rotating repertory of five plays, with short-term plays for children. Performances are held in the Little York Lake Pavilion, built in 1906 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The Cortland Repertory Theatre is located approximately 10 miles north of Cortland in Little York.

If you prefer your entertainment somewhat more “down-home,” you’ll want to visit the Country Music Park and Campground, located on Route 13, (Exit 11, off I-81). Known as the “Nashville of the Northeast,” the highlight of the park is the Hall of Fame. It contains memorabilia donated by local, state and nationally renowned country musicians. Live country music is featured in the summer months in the outdoor stage. The “Opry” barn and campground are open year-round. Put on your dancing shoes for a little country jamboree, line dance and two-stepping, or round and square dancing.

If you’re seeking a hidden gem in the Finger Lakes, you’ll want to experience the rural heritage of Cortland County. No matter the season or the weather, Cortland County has something for everyone.

From crystal glasses imported from Germany to hand-made artisan jewelry to local gourmet foods and pottery to wine accessories, the wine and gift shop is geared to a wine lover’s lifestyle. Wine shop manager Ruth Frampton has long been a local favorite among wine lovers for her knowledge of the area wine growing and tasting, as well as her funloving spirit. Many returning guests will visit Ruth bearing her gifts from their home towns, including a Pennsylvania woman who brings Ruth homemade lasagna every time she visits!

One of Ruth’s favorite Belhurst wines is the Cabernet Franc 02. “The bouquet permeates the nasal passages.

It’s full of flavor and smooth – a substantial and pleasant-tasting red wine,” she explains. As for the whites, she prefers Belhurst’s Dry Riesling. “Of all my years in the Finger Lakes, I find it’s one of the better Rieslings in the area.

It’s fruity, so it doesn’t taste too dry or too mineralic. Many visitors who don’t usually prefer Rieslings will taste and fall in love with our Riesling. It offers a flowery and fruity taste that is very refreshing,” Ruth says.

While Belhurst’s wines are currently only available in the Wine & Gift Shop right at Belhurst, the company has just launched its online shopping page to cater to its many out-oftown customers who were asking for wine shipments.

Over the past year Belhurst has received much acclaim for its wines and well-planned expansion. It looks forward to serving all who come to visit. Make Belhurst a part of your summer plans.

here are a million jokes about people who play that ridiculous game of golf – mostly told by golfers to other golfers. And all the golfers laugh. A favorite one is about the wife and husband who while playing golf … Well let’s just say you have to be a golfer to appreciate the dark humor of some of the jokes. Golfers are also known for their uncanny memory of each hole on every course they have ever played. Again only other golfers can listen to these stories.

Turnings by Robert Gessner I understand in the schools today they call it general technology. Before that, industrial arts. And when I was in grammar school, it was manual training. Mr. Smith, the shop teacher at Public School 68 in Buffalo, was, as I think back, one of a kind. He let his students operate every machine in the shop except the jointer.

What a great opportunity for us youngsters.

That was my first wood turning experience. I actually made a coffee table with four turned legs, a traytype top and a glass insert. It’s now in the attic, but still impressive considering my age.

Thirty years later when I’d retired on the shores of Cayuga Lake, a good friend, Walter Lynn, gave me an old Shopsmith woodworking machine. It lay dormant for a few years in my garage. I decided to build a storage shed and moved the shop smith into it. Don’t ask how, but this somehow became my shop.

About the third bowl I turned was from our own woodpile and the natural edge really caught my fancy.

In the beginning, I turned mostly local woods: oak,

maple, walnut and cherry, cherry being my favorite.

I also turned green wood, which is a challenge in itself. Sometimes, the water would actually spray out while turning. When these bowls dry out, they often take a shape of their own, making for some interesting configurations. I call these “God-Shaped Bowls.”

Over the past eight years I have branched out, no pun intended, and have purchased special burls and exotic woods from all over the world, like Amboyna burls from the Philippines, but these exotic woods are very pricey.

All in all, turning is a great hobby, and I enjoy progressing with my work. There are a lot of amazing wood turners out there, and I think some of them are much more talented than I. My only salvation is the sign over my lathe, “The race for quality has no finish line.”
