A Finger Lakes Vacation
gcv.org
Spend a day, experience a century. The aroma of food cooking on an open hearth; the fragrant Victorian gardens; the glow of red-hot iron; the whirr of the potter’s wheel; the excited laughter of children at play. That’s just a taste of what’s in store in the Historic Village where history comes to life in each of our 68 historic buildings.
There’s fun & entertainment for visitors of every age! See for yourself.

ince Life in the Finger Lakes magazine was launched in the summer of 2001, we have learned a few things from our readers. Number one is that readers enjoy anything in the magazine that has to do with daytrips and places of interest to visit. They also enjoy our calendar in the magazine and on LifeintheFingerLakes.com. We decided to go a step further and create a special annual publication that deals strictly with events and places to visit. We would like to present to you our travel planner, the premier edition of Explore the Finger Lakes.com magazine. Yes, I know that’s an unusual name for a magazine, but we think the .com part of the title is essential to the printed publication. We launched ExploretheFinger Lakes.com a little over a year ago with the goal of having a comprehensive listing of businesses and other services within the Finger Lakes Region. From those extensive free listings, we want users to be able to create their own trip itinerary. We’re always on the lookout for new businesses to sign up and give us their information, for free. Our intention is for you to use this magazine as a guide, a tool to get you where you need to go, and as a reference for what to see when you get there. Our map on page 4 gives you an overall view of the Finger Lakes. Keep this magazine handy in your car for those quick weekend getaways or for general purpose sightseeing. In this issue we have focused on 11 communities and have also included in-
formation from the entire region, under the heading of “major events throughout the region” starting on page 5. There are tourism groups for each county and the entire region, and we have provided contact information for those on the opposite page. Within each community focus, you will see a list of events. Use this list to generate some ideas of what you want to do. You will also see a map for that area, putting it into the context of where, within the Finger Lakes Region, the community is located. And you can also peruse some of the villages and towns nearby. Along with this magazine, we encourage you to visit ExploretheFinger Lakes.com, to create your trip itinerary and get a general feel for what there is to do, where you can dine and where you can stay overnight. We know that this magazine and the website work best if used together. You can browse or search areas of interest on the website, create an itinerary and save it for future reference. What a handy tool to have! I hope this magazine and website makes your vacation in the Finger Lakes an enjoyable experience. We are always working hard to present good information to the reader. Please let us know how we’re doing.

Auburn: Celebrating the Past, Forging the Future a r e a

eg Clarke was a florist in Auburn from the early 1900s until the 1960s. He shared tales with his grandchildren of how he and a buddy would hop the trolley to Owasco Lake to spend the day at the amusement park. The two stretched the dimes their mothers gave them by lazing on park benches until courting couples paid them a nickel to leave, or by catching the brass ring on the carousel until its operator chased them off. Emerson Park and the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse Although Mr. Clarke, the trolley and Auburn’s amusement parks are gone, Emerson Park remains a popular family destination, enjoyed for its picnic area, beach, playground, fishing and boating. Gardened walkways and a 1920s-era pavilion that once hosted legendary Big Band performers lend a flavor of yesteryear. When summer rolls around, it’s time for opening night at the Merry-GoRound Playhouse, located in the park’s former carousel pavilion. The playhouse opened in 1976 with a talented cast of local performers. Today, it offers Broadway-quality summer stock theater featuring the finest regional and Children love the antique tractor at the Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum.
Broadway talents. This year “The Full Monty” (May 27-June 17) opens the season, followed by “Disney’s High School Musical” (June 24-July 18) and “No, No Nanette” (July 22-August 12). Next, audiences will cheer for “A Chorus Line” (August 19-September 5), “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” (September 9-30) and “I Left My Heart” (October 7-25). Visit the Playhouse at 6877 East Lake Road in Auburn. Tickets ranging from $26 to $39 may be ordered online at www.merry-go-round.com. The Ward O’Hara Agricultural Museum The Ward W. O’Hara Agricultural Museum is located across from the park on East Lake Road. O’Hara authored 15 books and was a local newspaper columnist who loved collecting antique farm equipment. Inspired by a deserted 4-H pavilion, he requested permission from the Cayuga County Legislature to turn it into a museum. Today, the museum pays tribute to 19th-century farm life with a blacksmith shop, a general store and a creamery. The Seward House The Federal-styled building located at 33 South Street in Auburn is the former home of William H. Seward, Sec-
Willard Memorial Chapel, a tribute to Tiffany’s design work
retary of State to President Abraham Lincoln and the man responsible for the purchase of Alaska. The building was the scene of an attempted murder plot against Seward, part of the same conspiracy in which Lincoln was assassinated. Until 1951, four generations of Sewards lived in the home, safeguarding its contents. As a result of ongoing research on well-maintained documents, the knowledgeable and entertaining staff brings to life the politics and customs of the day, as well as the Seward family’s habits and traditions. The Sewards were staunch abolitionists, and visitors can view the cellarlevel kitchen that played a role in the Underground Railroad. The upstairs hallway is a fascinating “Who’s Who” photo gallery of the 19th Century. The Seward House is open all year, Tuesday through Saturday, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. From July 1 through October 11, the museum is also open Sundays from 1 to 4 p.m. Admission: adults $7, AAA/seniors $6, students with I.D. $2, children under 10 free. Classy Glass
a r e a
by Eric Smith and D.J. Smith
T
here is an interesting daytrip for you in the Finger Lakes, whether you’re a glass-half-full or glasshalf-empty kind of person. Ready yourself to get behind the wheel, put on your sunglasses and take in the view from your windshield as you head to Corning to learn about a simple but amazing material. Glass. In 1868, Amory Houghton Sr. moved The Brooklyn Flint Glass Company to Corning, changed the name to Corning Glass Works and made the city of Corning synonymous with glass. That he wouldn’t recognize how far his company has come in more than 140 years is an understatement. It’s why even Houghton would benefit from a tour through the Corning Museum of Glass. For $12.50, with deals for students, residents and seniors, an adult can tour the museum all day. Children and teenagers get in free, which makes the museum very family friendly. Tours begin at 9 a.m. and we suggest you set aside three to five hours to get the most of the museum. (It closes at 5 p.m., but remains open until 8 p.m. from Memorial Day to Labor Day.) We take glass for granted today, not surprising considering how many times in our day-to-day lives we come into contact with this amazing product made from silica, the most abundant mineral on earth (predominantly in the form of sand or quartz). We drink from it, eat off it and look through it. It surrounds our light sources, transmits our information and more. A glass showcase Recognized as the preeminent museum of glass in the world, Corning Museum of Glass chronicles more than 3,500 years of glassmaking craft and art. The sculpted portrait of the Egyptian king Amenhotep II, dated 1450 to 1400
B.C., is displayed not far away from a piece from 2000 A.D. Both are in the company of pieces that span the centuries between them. It’s easy to illustrate such a long time span when you have nearly 43,000 glass objects from which to choose. They come from Achaemenia (Iran) all the way through the alphabet of countries and historical regions to “Western Provinces.” From the simple shape of a 1200 B.C. bead, to the utilitarian but beautiful form of a vase or bowl, to the sublime expression of an artist who molded the glass into the form he needed to bring out from his imagination, the Corning Museum of glass has it all. Then there are the kids, or better yet, the kid in all of us, and the fun to be had there at many levels. Throughout the day, at 45-minute intervals, you can watch glassblowers, called gaffers, create vases and other items during the Hot Glass Show. At the Innovation Center, flame workers are featured up close as they mix glass rods and heat to create “fanciful shapes” during shows that run every 30 minutes. The Vessel Gallery is a fanciful display of everyday glass items, bottles, bowls, and laboratory vessels of all sizes and shapes. The Optics Gallery has as its showpiece a 200-inch disk cast in the mid-1930s for the Hale telescope at California’s Palomar Observatory. The Innovation Center is interactive and traces the inventors who made newer products possible either from direct research ideas or from accidents that took them in a different direction. The lowly window has its own gallery illustrating how window glass went from the bubble-filled versions seen in old houses to the clarity of today. It must be transparent to you by now that glass has many more facets to it than you might have first thought. One

may continue to take glass for granted after touring the Corning Museum of Glass, but perhaps you may come away with a bit more appreciation for this simple material’s potential. Cowboy art and more Still in the Market Street Historic District but about one block south, on

Cedar Street, is the Rockwell Museum of Western Art. Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. with extended hours until 8 p.m. from Memorial to Labor Days. Admission is $6.50 for adults, $5.50 for students and folks over 55, and free to children and teens. For a really economical deal, the Rockwell Museum and the Corning Museum offer a combined same-day adult price of $16.50, with respective senior/student discounts. The building that houses the Rockwell Museum speaks for itself, historically. Built as the City Hall in 1893, it was fully renovated in 2000/2001 to properly permit the space to display the extensive collection of Western art and artifacts originally collected by local business owners Bob and Hertha Rockwell. Wrought Iron Red and Mad Bug Lager You would be forgiven if you stopped for an ice cream cone to assuage your hunger, but we suggest you hold off on this snack until your hunger is in need of serious attention. One suggestion to replace the calories your full day’s walk has rid you of is the Market Street Brewing Co. & Restaurant at 68 West Market Street. Founded in 1997 by Theresa and Pelham McClellan, the two have help running the place from their son John-Paul Burris, 25, a culinary-schooled chef. Before you enter, you can’t help but notice the two stainless steel tanks that dominate the front windows. Burris said they have been brewing their own beer since 1997, and only serve their six brews there, added to by seasonal beers. Once inside, your eyes are drawn to the exquisite beauty of the back bar, put together by Mark Cherry, owner of the Architectural Antique Exchange in Philadelphia. To Corning, Cherry brought several restored bar pieces from Philadelphia and columns from an antebellum home in Atlanta. His crew traveled here to assemble it. There’s a bar in front, too, rescued from a local watering hole that was being demolished. Wrought Iron Red and Mad Bug Lager were two exceptional tasting beers and well worth waiting for. The
a r e a
popularity of the brews may have something to do with the hundred or so 20ounce beer mugs that hang above the bar. If you join the Mug Club, you get a monogrammed mug that is filled for the price of a 16-ounce mug. But wait, there’s more. For the $40 price you also get a 64-ounce growler of beer every three months to take home. Price of the growler not included. But hunger was the reason for coming in and on that note the menu has something for everyone. There are appetizers aplenty, including Eggplant Napoleon, Coconut Shrimp and Sushi Nachos. Prices range from $5.99 to $9.99. Sandwiches, burgers and wraps are tantalizingly named as well, including beef, barbecued pork, Ahi tuna and chicken in interesting sauces and garnishes. Prices range from $6.99 to $10.99. Entrees came colorfully in the form of Pork Osso Bucco, fresh rainbow trout, jerked chicken, scallops and shrimp, and a sirloin steak choice. All of them make you salivate just by reading about how they are prepared. Prices range from $11.99 to $19.99 with the promise of a “dock special” at market prices. To ensure that no one is left out, there is a kid’s menu and a dessert menu. Specialty coffees are available. Burris uses all the local seasonal ingredients he can find, and dining in nicer weather takes place at the street level beer garden tables or on the upstairs deck that seats 40. So from how glass is made, to looking through glass to window shop, to enjoying a fine glass of beer, a day in Corning is clearly one to look into. For more details, visit www.cmog.org, www.rockwellmuseum.org and www.936-beer.com. Freelance writer D.J. Smith recently returned to the Finger Lakes after spending two years in Arkansas where he was a reporter for the North Little Rock Times. He was also cofounder, chief reporter and editor of the online-only news source, Dogtownwire. Chef Eric K. Smith is currently with the New York Wine & Culinary Center.

Hiking Trails ––––––––––––––––– Great Eastern Trail A new 45-mile “wilderness footpath experience” is being constructed in the Corning area as part of the Great Eastern Trail which will run, eventually, from New York to the Florida/Alabama border. Made up of footpaths that wander over hills, across fields, through valleys and state forests and also onto privately owned land, this new trail section begins in Pennsylvania and runs up through Addison. The trail will eventually make its way through the Erwin Hollow State Forest to Painted Post and across Steuben County until it connects with the main Finger Lakes Trail. he British built a stockade on the site of present-day Geneva circa 1755. Several Seneca nation villages thrived there prior to and concurrently with the British presence, until the Sullivan expedition drove the Iroquois out in 1779. Between the end of the Revolution and Geneva’s incorporation in 1806, the area developed rapidly, with the establishment of the Post Office, the building of the Geneva Hotel, the publication of the Ontario Gazette – the first newspaper in the region, and the introduction of a public water system. By the time the village incorporated, Geneva was home to more than 300 people. With the opening of the Erie Canal and, later, the railroad, Geneva became an important center of agriculture, trade, industry and education. Elizabeth Blackwell, the first woman doctor, graduated from Geneva College (later renamed Hobart) in 1849, and in 1880, the NYS Agricultural Experiment Station was established. Affiliated with Cornell University since the 1920s, the Experiment Station has been instrumental in developing new varieties of grapes particularly well suited to the Finger Lakes Region.

In response to World War II, the Seneca Army Depot and Sampson Naval Base sprang up south of Geneva in Seneca County. Geneva’s economy flourished due to the numerous servicemen and their families who flocked to city businesses for goods, services and entertainment. In fact, between 1939 and 1943, the number of marriages in Geneva more than doubled. With the decline in the numbers of servicemen after the Korean War and the construction of the NYS Thruway that bypassed the city, however, its economy shrank. Geneva, known as “The Lake Trout Capital of the World,” has recently benefited from revitalization efforts that have led to economic, architectural and cultural improvements. This city of about 14,000 residents at the north end of Seneca Lake boasts around 200 unique businesses specializing in apparel and accessories, gifts, real estate, health and wellness, massage, jewelry, flowers, furniture, auto supplies, hardware, books, music, art, antiques, barber shops and salons, theaters, restaurants and bars, as well as a wealth of world-class entertainment, historic attractions and outdoor recreation venues.

he historic village of Hammondsport (population 753) is tucked between rolling wooded hillsides at the southern end of Y-shaped Keuka Lake. The village was part of a tract of land purchased by Captain John Shethar in 1796. It eventually passed into the hands of Lazarus Hammond and came to be known as Hammond’s Port – later changed to Hammondsport. Reverend William Warner Bostwick planted the first cuttings of grapes

(Catawba and Isabella) in this area in 1829. Thus began the tradition of grape growing and wine making that have made Hammondsport famous as the winery capital of New York. Hammondsport is the site of U.S. Bonded Winery No. 1. Hammondsport is also the birthplace of pioneer aviator and inventor Glenn H. Curtiss who was born May 21, 1878. He came to be known as the “Father of Naval Aviation,” and many of his historic flights took place over the fields surrounding the village or above the waters of Keuka Lake. Tourists and locals alike enjoy Keuka Lake for swimming, boating, sailing and any number of other water sports. Parks along the shoreline are great for picnicking and hiking. Fine restaurants and lodgings also attract many people to Hammondsport.

quickly ends. A “Grimes Glen” sign and a Finger Lakes Land Trust information sign will bring you to a grassy parking area. From there you can enjoy an easy but potentially slippery walk along Grimes Creek, which culminates in three waterfalls. Two are 60-foot falls, and the third, an isolated 3-foot waterfall, can only be accessed by a 40-foot climb. For a more challenging hike, visit Hi Tor Wildlife Management Area, located just off Route 245, barely two miles outside of Naples off Route 21. The trail loop can take the whole day, if one wishes, and features a waterfall, ponds, and a chasm that is approximately 400 feet deep. start his vineyard. Today, Widmer’s Wine Cellars offer both tastings and tours. Across the street, you’ll find a purple building that houses the Imagine Moore Winery. The owners, Tim and Diane Moore say theirs was the first winery to be established in Naples in 100 years. When you get hungry, take your nourishment at the Brown Hound, located a few miles north of Naples at 6459 State Route 64. Inside the small 100-year-old house, chef Trish Asher prepares bistro-style cuisine that she describes as “creative American food served with lots of local wines.” Asher relies on local vendors for many of her ingredients and tries to make her dishes using 50 percent locally grown products. Maple syrup from nearby hills, produce from Joseph’s Wayside Market in Naples, fresh eggs from Adam’s Henhouse, organic goodies from the Happy Goat Farm, and cheeses from Lively Run Goat Dairy. After dinner, take in a play at the Bristol Valley Theater, where you’ll find professional entertainment May through October. Performers come from New York City and around the country, and the program fare includes comedies, mysteries, musicals, concerts and children’s theater. To get a bigger taste of Naples, plan your visit around an event in the town.

The once scarred gorge has returned to nature. There are still remnants of backyard garbage dumps and decaying mill foundations. The fishing is good, and bubbling waters attract people in the summer. Yates County purchased the abandoned railroad, and volunteers converted it to a trail. Today, it is maintained by Friends of the Outlet, an all-volunteer organization that came into being to protect the gorge “from rim to rim and lake to lake.” Friends maintain the Keuka Outlet Trail, from Cherry Street in Penn Yan to the railroad in Dresden. Village roads allow people to continue their walk to nearby Seneca Lake. Friends of the Outlet hope that someday the trail will follow the historic Crooked Lake Canal, all the way from the Penn Yan portion of the trail on Keuka Lake to Seneca Lake. The trail is open year-round, sunrise to sunset. Hikers, bikers, horseback riders, skiers, snowmobiles and motorized wheelchairs use the trail. No cars, trucks, ATVs or four-wheelers are allowed. There are several places to park a car for access to the trail, and Penn Yan offers all the amenities of a large town, with famous wine-tasting trails and tours nearby. The Oliver House and the Yates County Historical Office can provide a wealth of local history and information. Summer hikers ending in Dresden can have an ice cream or a casual meal.

A small museum in the house where Robert G. Ingersoll was born is open summer weekends. A family hike or bike on the trail can be a stroll or a run and is always fun. It is as easy as a walk in the park. A picnic pavilion overlooks the Seneca Mills Falls. Bring your own water. There are four outhouses along the trail. A general trail booklet and 17 fliers on individual mill sites – including the Crooked Lake Canal, the Penn Yan and Dresden waterfronts, and the railroad – are available from the Friends of the Outlet, Box 65, Dresden, NY 14441, 315-536-9484. Birders: bring your binoculars. Anglers: read your New York State regulations because rules for trout fishing along the stream and near the lakes differ. Photographers: bring your cameras, and historians, your paper, pens and camera. Naturalists: bring your plant and animal identifying books. Don’t forget your water bottles, sunscreen and mosquito repellant. Dogs are allowed on a leash. The Friends organization asks that users sign in at one of the registers to help tally usage for grant applications. The Keuka Outlet stream is not for novices. Water releases are not publicized or under the control of Friends of the Outlet. The waterway is not patrolled. Kayakers should check with groups or clubs that are familiar with the fast-flowing Keuka Outlet water for information.

clear blue lake alongside a main street filled with unique shops and restaurants combine for a one-of-a-kind, relaxing experience. The village of Skaneateles sits at the north end of the eastern Finger
Lake by the same name. Its tree-lined streets with flowerpots tended by the local garden club, and well-kept historic homes bring you back to a time with a slower and easier pace of life. This year the Sherwood Inn in Skaneateles will celebrate 200 years of entertaining travelers coming and going along historic Route 20. The Sherwood was built by Isaac Sherwood in 1807, back when Route 20 was just a dirt trail for stagecoaches. The inn has been restored to all its original beauty (with all the modern conveniences) and boasts 24 unique rooms, some with a fireplace and Jacuzzi. A tavern complete with a woodburning fireplace, an elegant dining room, and two dining porches let visitors enjoy the lake view. The Sherwood is just one of over 30 lodging possibilities in the Skaneateles area. There are bed and breakfasts, a hotel, a fourstar inn and spa, and more conventional roadside motels. Be sure to get out on Skaneateles Lake when you come to visit. It is one of the cleanest lakes in the world – so clean, in fact, that it is the unfiltered

Mid-Lakes offers lunch, dinner and sightseeing cruises, and you can even help deliver mail to lakeside cottages during the months of July and August. Several local companies also offer fishing charters. Skaneateles is sure to be your “stress-free zone” this summer!
Population: village – 2,660 town – 7,323 Established: 1833 Landmarks: The Gazebo in Clift Park is the site of summertime concerts; the Krebs restaurant – four generations serving a traditional seven-course meal; The Pier, a 500-foot-long jetty to walk right out onto the lake; and Doug’s Fish Fry are all world renowned! What’s in a name? Skaneateles, pronounced “skan-ee-at-less,” is an Iroquois word meaning “long lake.” It’s the home of Welch Allyn, an innovator of medical equipment; Tim Green, announcer for FOX sports and former Syracuse University and Atlanta Falcons football player; the John D. Barrow Art Gallery; and the teasel industry, which thrived in the 1800s. Recognition: The vacation spot of choice for President Bill Clinton and Senator Hillary Clinton. Excerpts from Watkins Glen: Water’s Sculpture in Stone photos and story by Tony Ingraham
A
“book of nature” is how local journalist and promoter Morvalden Ells described Watkins Glen in the 1860s, and travel writer Tip Roseberry wrote in 1982, “A tour through Watkins Glen is a visit to an art gallery of nature, each picture to be savored individually before moving on to the next.” Water created Watkins Glen – water as a stream that eroded the gorge, water as Ice Age glaciers that bored the Seneca Lake valley and changed the course of Glen Creek, and water in an ancient sea where sand and mud settled on the bottom, eventually to harden and become the very rocks the gorge is cut into. The main entrance to the park is where you make your transition from the busy, noisy world of the 21st century to a quiet natural world where time
does not seem to matter. From here on, nature follows its own rhythms. At the end of Sentry Bridge, Glen Alpha opens up to you. You peer up the stream as it runs toward you through a twisting, narrow, smoothed channel of rock, to crash below you as Entrance Cascade. Beyond, high walls of stone enclose a huge, cool cavity in the earth threaded by the stream and waterfalls. Lush ferns, mosses, wildflowers and small trees soften the dark, grey stone. Cavern Cascade is at the head of a little section of gorge. Indeed, most sections of the glen have waterfalls at their upper ends, because waterfalls have cut them in the first place. You might think
of the entire glen as a giant staircase of waterfalls, each waterfall a step. Beyond, you can see potholes in the Glen of Pools. The falls on the upstream edge of each pool are so short they hardly deserve to be called waterfalls, but the pools are magnificent with their charming round contours and green depths as they tumble from one into the next. On the approach to Rainbow Falls, a ribbon of water streams down out of the forest on a green slide of rock. It then leaps over the trail and into Glen Creek, which has just jumped down Triple Cascade. The scene is so lovely and unusual that the view of Rainbow Falls and Triple Cascade may be the most photographed spot in Watkins Glen. A Walk through Watkins Glen: Water’s Sculpture in Stone by photographer and park naturalist Tony Ingraham is available at gift shops in the state park, at Storylines Bookstore, Capt. Bill’s Seneca Lake Cruises, and in bookstores and gift shops in the region. For more information and online ordering, visit www.owlgorge.com. Travel Pl anner 2009 ~
