the population. For the past seven years, approximately 10,000 of us have reached the age of 65 every day, and that will continue apace until 2030. We don’t know how many people actually retire each day. There isn’t any national human resources department where we all have to report, toss our keys on the table and say, “That’s it. I’m out of here.” Most of the articles I read about retirement make the assumption that the number of people retiring each day is the equivalent of the people who turn 65, but there are a couple of flaws to that reasoning. Back in the day, most Americans worked for large companies, which typically had a mandatory retirement age. They also had a defined benefit pension, so the same day you hit 65 you started to collect a fixed amount, based on years of service. Mandatory retirement ages are mostly gone now, along with defined benefit pensions and the whole cradle-to-grave compact between employer and employee. In the 1970s, the average primary wage earner for a household spent 25 years at one company. Today the average is four years. Over the same period life expectancy has increased by more than 10 percent, from about 71 to 79. That translates to a lot more retirees, but it also means that people are healthier longer, and continued on page 6

One of the nice things about my job is that I will occasionally get a letter from an old friend who is responding to something I wrote in an editorial. Lately I have received quite a few. Something that most of the recent letters have in common is that they make some sort of reference to retirement. People are planning to retire soon, or wondering if they will be able to. In some cases, they have already retired, but are still reading industry publications to keep in touch. No doubt this is partly due to my own age. I’m 65, and most of my old friends in business are around there or a little older, so it’s natural that many of us would be thinking of cashing out, but I get the sense that there is a little more to it. Specialty retail, and the businesses that cater to it, have grown more and more difficult over the past decade or so. It’s still a big industry, and it’s still very possible to do well in it, but it requires a great deal of hard work, ingenuity and perseverance. I don’t think it’s hard to understand why a lot of older people, like myself, might decide that they no longer had the stomach for it. I was born at the height of the baby boom, which ran from 1946 to 1964. We boomers are no longer the largest generation, but there are still a lot of us at around 60 million, or nearly 20 percent of

could continue to work if they choose. It’s also important to keep in mind that boomers began to reach retirement age in 2011, when the nation was still crippled from the effects of the Great Recession. IRAs and 401(k)s were slowly recovering from the staggering losses of 2008 and millions of home mortgages were still “under water.” Anyone who had a job tended to hold onto it. My point, in case you’re beginning to wonder, is that I seriously doubt that my generation has retired at the same rate that it has reached the traditional retirement age of 65. Assuming that most people will still retire at some point, that means that there would logically be a surge in retirements over the next decade. It’s similar to a situation in the marketplace in which consumers have held off making a purchase, creating what economists refer to as “pent-up demand.” I know it’s anecdotal evidence, but judging from my own circle of friends, that surge may already be underway. Since I am not far from joining it, I find myself keenly interested in what all these people are planning to do with the rest of their lives. When we were younger, and the topic of retirement came up in conversation, we spoke of all the active things that we would have more time for. We expected to play a lot of golf and tennis, go biking and hiking, and travel to the exotic corners of the world. The reality, I find, is somewhat more mundane. All that physical exertion is constrained by aging joints, and the train to Marrakech sounds more uncomfortable than it does romantic. Some of us may have grandchildren to play with, but these days kids have pretty tight schedules. Clearly, we will need to find an activity that engages the mind, and study after study has shown that we would be well-advised to do so. It’s like a muscle, which remains strong only to the extent that it is used. Now when my friends talk about retirement, they almost always include some sort of artistic or intellectual endeavor. As I have tried to find a creative activity to enrich my own later years, my biggest worry is just that. They will be “later” years, which sounds to me like “less creative” years. That’s why I was so interested this fall to read about a study conducted by Dashun Wang, a professor at Northwestern University. I had long believed that creative people had “hot streaks,” or periods in their careers during which they produced their best work, but I had always assumed that those streaks usually happened during the vigor of youth.

Although I most often notice hot streaks among composers and authors, Wang and his team chose to study the work of 3,500 painters and sculptors, 6,000 film directors and more than 10,000 scientists. To measure success, they used data points such as the auction price of paintings and the IMDb ratings of movies. The first thing they found came as no surprise to me. More than 90 percent of artists do indeed have a hot streak, generally lasting from two to six years, during which they produce the bulk of their best work. In other words, if you read a book that you really love, and you want to find another one of similar quality, read the next thing written by the same writer. It’s almost as if artists find a vein of gold, and they can mine that vein until it’s gone. The second thing they found did surprise me. Although younger artists are more prolific than older ones, and in that sense are increasing their odds of success, hot steaks can happen at any stage of a career. An artist’s best work is just as likely to come at the end of his or her career as it is at the beginning, or the middle. I found this news to be

greatly encouraging. The study did not address the idea of a late-life creative effort specifically, but if an artist can reach his creative peak at the end of his career, it stands to reason that there is hope for aging neophytes, like me.

The Shops Downstairs by Tina Manzer Betsy Yamron, manager of Albright Art Supply and gift store in Concord, Massachusetts, was taken by surprise recently when a young woman shopping in her store exclaimed, “Oh my gosh! I didn’t realize there were so many colors!” In response to Betsy’s puzzled look, the woman disclosed that she always bought her oil paints online. She had never seen the full array. “Amazon has claimed all the 20-somethings and taught them how to shop in their pajamas from bed,” sighed Betsy in a recent interview, explaining the customer’s disconnect with the real world. “It’s not a good thing for them, and it’s obviously not a good thing for stores.” Luckily, bricks-and-mortar Albright Art has a lot going for it. Betsy is one of them. A graduate of Wells College in New York’s Finger Lakes Region, she majored in art history with courses in photography and drawing – skills that landed her a job in New York City with iconic ad agency Young & Rubicam. She and her family moved back to Massachusetts, where her husband grew up, 10 years ago. “I love being back in the art world, especially researching and purchasing the products,” she told me. “I find art supplies just fascinating.” Betsy follows the blogs of many different artists, and loves when her research uncovers, say, the differences between similar paints, or tools or mediums that perform the best in certain situations. “I just had to know why Holbein’s Duo Aqua Oil is water soluble if it’s made with the same ingredients as regular Holbein oil paints. As it turns out, the difference is the addition of a surfactant instead of linseed oil. The result is a nontoxic version of the original.” Here’s another one: “Cretacolor makes a wonderful line of oil pencils called Nero in a range of drawing tones: Black – five hardnesses! – plus Sepia Dark, Sepia Light, Sanguine, and White. They don’t smudge, even when you do a watercolor wash over them. I get them through Savoir Faire.”
Storeowner Marie Foley, left, and Betsy Yamron, manager of Albright Art. “We work together on purchasing,” Betsy explains. “There are some art supply lines that I buy, while Marie’s specialty is gifts. She’s really opened my mind in terms of retail possibilities.”

She shares these features and benefits with customers both personally and with signage displayed on the shelves with the products. “People who shop here appreciate our knowledge,” she says. “I educate my staff because I want them to be as intrigued as I am by the different options so they can help customers make good decisions.”
Double the fun Albright Art shares its downtown space with Revolutionary Concord, a gift store extraordinaire that sells jewelry, candles, home decorations, cards, and souvenirs of the historic town. Both stores are owned by Marie Foley, a well-known local shopkeeper. “The space, about 2,200 square feet total, is located downstairs from street level,” explains Betsy. “On one side is Albright and on the other is Revolutionary Concord. We maintain the integrity of each store, but keep the doors open between them. Shoppers wander in and out through the doors and pick up candles, maybe a glass creation by artist Simon Pearce, and then some oil paint and brushes for themselves, and colored markers for their children. “The fun, open atmosphere draws people down the

for the history – the revolutionary war started at North Bridge, and big thinkers like Henry David Thoreau and Ralph Waldo Emerson began a literary movement here,” notes Betsy. The community supports two local art groups. The 850-member Concord Art Association, founded a century ago, offers classes and exhibits. The Umbrella Arts Center, a former middle school, also offers classes. It features studios for more than 50 artists whose activities range from painting and photography to violin making and weaving. “I’m taking a painting class there right now – acrylics – and I love it,” says Betsy. “I’m using the GOLDEN products that we sell, so there I am, ‘walking the walk.’” She doesn’t attend trade shows to find products, “but Art Materials Retailer is always interesting to me, especially the recommendations from other stores. I compare what I have to their suggestions to make sure I’m in the loop.”

Williamsburg, Golden Artists Colors, Winsor & Newton, and others.” Paint may be Betsy’s bread and butter, but ink, dip pens and markers for hand-lettering are trending. “People of all ages are enjoying making pretty letters right now, whether they’re for wedding invitations or for journaling,” she says. “Some customers make their own alphabets. “Tombow’s Fudenosuke markers make a beautiful line for creative lettering,” she continues. “If you press harder, you get a thicker line, so they’re just wonderful for varied lettering techniques. Zig calligraphy markers are also selling well, as is the Pilot Varsity disposable fountain pen. It feels wonderful and comes with black, red, blue, purple, or turquoise ink. People like the idea of getting back to a fountain pen, and it writes so nicely. “If I carried Montblanc pens, for instance, at the holidays, I think they would sell,” she adds. “I haven’t carried them, but I do have some Caran D’Ache ballpoint pens that are nice, and Retro Pens from Kikkerland sold really well last Christmas. Although I’m happy to offer them, high-end pens are a complicated business. I’d rather sell paint. People here love their paint.” And brushes. “They are so important,” she says. “I have brushes for oil and acrylic – long-handled ones. For watercolor, I have short-handled brushes; even some highend Isabey Blue Squirrel brushes. We also have craft and children’s brushes. The people who shop here can get any kind of brush that they want. “There are no rules in art. That’s my philosophy,” she explains. “I try to take away any sort of hesitation in terms of making art. Really – once you let your creative energy flow, you can do whatever. We offer options. Customers don’t have to buy the $100 mop brush. They can buy a $20 or $10 brush. I want people to feel
To get parents to shop for art and school supplies at Albright Art – instead of driving away to the nearest Michaels – Betsy brought in glue sticks, pencils and other items on the classroom lists of local schools. comfortable with their art and the materials they use to make it.”
More materials for kids The store continues to grow its children’s art section, and Betsy is expanding its offering of school supplies. Albright Art has always carried poster board, tag board, and foam core, but now Betsy and her staff – two parttimers most of the year, but six during the holidays – are actively selling them, and working with kids and parents on school project ideas. School glue, construction paper, tempera paints and air-dry clay are also on the shelves. “This year we were able to get the classroom lists from our local school, so I stocked Dixon Ticonderoga pencils, the Crayola 24-pack of crayons, Elmer’s glue sticks and other items on the lists – items that are not usually stocked in a fine arts supply store. Our goal is to get parents to buy school and art supplies here, rather than make the drive to Michaels or shop online. “Of course, there are always those people who are going to shop online no matter what,” she adds. “I can’t do anything about that, so I just have to emphasize what makes us different: we’re educated and knowledgeable, we’re fun, and we have high-quality products. Even more important, we’re always here to talk through a project or an art problem, and provide some creative energy.” When I asked Betsy to name the biggest challenge of her job, it was this: “When people say, ‘It’s so expensive.’ I tell them fine art materials make fine art. You’re going to get what you pay for.” What she likes best, then, is when customers use her recommendations to create art, and open their phones to show her their progress. “I take that as a real compliment. It will make my day.”

“ What are artists creating with your products?”
A Thousand Words Paint a Picture by Tina Manzer Four years ago, Brittany Luiz decided to pick up a brush pen; one that helped her transition from thick to thin lines when she made letters. “I was under the assumption that it would make my handwriting prettier,” she told me. The more she practiced, the better her lettering became. Her handwriting was another story – one she calls “Lackluster.” “The process of hand lettering is more like drawing than writing,” she explains. “I always tell my students that, contrary to what you might think, you do not need to have good handwriting to learn hand lettering. Anyone can learn it.” And they are, or at least it seems. “A stealthy resurgence is happening in the design world – a rebellion against the cold, sleek, digital environment in which we designers spend most of our time.
14
Hand lettering is not-so-quietly making a colossal comeback, exploding into the forefront of design,” noted a 2015 article in PRINT magazine. “Categories that used to be forbidden, such as logos and packaging, now embrace this historic form of typographic expression. It’s appearing everywhere – even on A-list products such as movie titles, magazines, book covers and advertisements. Hand lettering is out, proud and absolutely amazing.” Brittany Luiz not only practices the art of hand lettering, she teaches it, on top of managing media and public relations for Tombow. The company makes her favorite tools: the Dual Brush Pen and the Fudenosuke Brush Pen. “I love using Tombow products, especially the new Fudenosuke Colors,” she says. “They’ve always been my brand of choice, even before I started working for them.
What’s the Difference? To accurately define hand lettering, calligraphy, typography, etc. would take reams of paper. For the purposes of this article, I referenced this statement from Lettering Daily, an online community that provides educational and inspirational content on hand lettering and calligraphy. “Although the untrained eye may struggle to notice the difference between hand lettering and calligraphy, you need to remember that the main difference is how it’s created. Calligraphy is the art of beautiful WRITING while Hand Lettering is the art of ILLUSTRATING the letters.” -TM

I definitely think that using high-quality products is important for achieving the best results in my projects.” Most often, she creates art with words simply for the sake of creating. “I don’t usually have an intended purpose in mind,” she says. “When I do, it’s usually to make wall art or cards. “I love seeing all the different ways hand lettering can be added to something to make it special,” she continues. “I think my favorite commissioned work was when I hand lettered a couple-of-hundred labels for gifts for volunteers at my church. It was really fun to do and made for such a personal touch.” Making special documents even more special has been the traditional role of calligraphy since the Middle Ages, although as an art form it dates back to ancient China. Over the years, sales of calligraphy materials have waxed and waned as the practice of hand lettering swung in and out of fashion. For the past few years, it has definitely been “in.” “I think one of the reasons it’s so popular is that there is such a low barrier to entry,” notes Brittany. “Anyone with paper and a writing tool can start practicing right away. There are so many free or inexpensive resources available online that people can use to develop their skills.” Today, hand lettering has a wide audience; it’s not something practiced by artists and crafters only. “Planning is popular right now, so everyone wants to learn hand lettering to make their journals look pretty,” Brittany adds. “Even digital artists are picking up brush pens to find ways to add a handmade look to their art.” Lucy Edmonds, founder of Quill, London’s quintessential stationery store, believes that what she calls “modern calligraphy” has become popular as part of our rebellion against the things we can’t live without anymore – electronic devices. “Although it is sometimes condemned as merely ‘fancy handwriting,’ and admittedly modern calligraphy is less demanding in its approach that the rigorous traditional scripts of the Middle Ages, it has become an analog outlet for those who wish to shut down their computer, switch off their phones and relax by putting pen to paper.” In an interview with Henri Davis, an independent retail advisor in the stationery market, Edmonds added, “It’s a beautiful thing to be so absorbed in something that you forget about notifications or answering messages, which is really significant in our increasingly digital age. In reality, not everyone has the time to put real long-term commitment towards learning one of the more formal scripts, but the modern way is slightly more ‘forgiving.’” For Brittany, the process of putting Dual Brush Pen to paper actually begins with a look online. “I usually start by skimming through Pinterest or Instagram for

inspiration,” she says. “Then when I go to actually create, I put all of that inspiration away so I’m not unintentionally copying anything I’ve seen. I like to sketch in pencil first; doing several thumbnails until I like the composition, then I move on to the inking stage. “Sometimes, though, I’ll skip all of that and immediately start using my brush pens. I tend to burn through a lot more paper that way.” There are a lot of consumers hand lettering right now, she concludes. Retailers should be looking for ways to appeal to that crowd; carrying the products they need is a good place to start. “I think it’s worth mentioning that the Fudenosukes are wonderful brush pens for beginners because they’re so easy to control,” she concludes. “Mentioning that they’re great for people who are just getting started helps take some of the fear away from trying something new.” tombowusa.com

o le t a w S o H se a o l C by Tina Manzer Retail has changed, people. With fewer shoppers walking into bricks-and-mortar stores, it’s crucial for you to sell them something each and every time they appear. When it comes to closing a sale – another way of saying you’ve convinced the customer to exchange money for products – physical stores have a distinct advantage over online retail. “When people go into a store today to shop, it’s not because they have to, it’s because they want to,” notes The Retail Doctor Bob Phibbs. They’re looking for live people who can give them sound advice, expert assistance and a positive experience, in addition to just-the-right products to take home with them when they leave. “In many ways, closing the sale is helping shoppers do what they already came into your store to do, which was to buy,” observes Phibbs. “In a hair salon, it could be convincing a client to get a color with a haircut. In a men’s apparel store, it could be the shopper looking in the mirror who says, ‘I’ll take it.’ In a hardware store, it could be when the shopper, after talking with an associate, decides it would be simpler to buy a new faucet than to try to fix the old one.” In your store, it could the artist who has bought acrylic paint from you for years who agrees that the bins and trays you recommend will help organize her studio. But closing the sale doesn’t always happen, regardless of your best efforts. Customers offer you excuses; we’ve listed the most common ones here. It’s your job to convert their objections to approval, so we’ve also included some tactics to use the next time you hear “No thanks.”
18
“It’s too expensive” It’s probably the most common objection. But consider this: every item is too expensive if you can’t show customers its value. Phibbs suggests that you wait for the shopper to select one product before trying to justify the price on several, and ask questions to discover exactly what the customer is looking for, why he is looking, and what the potential objections would be. Deal with each objection by pointing out benefits. Be creative here. Will it save them money in the long run? Will it pay for itself after a certain number of uses? Is it one of a kind? Will it make their art more intriguing? Will it make them more productive? Will others be jealous? Will it solve a big problem? In Vend’s October enewsletter, the software company’s retail expert discussed how a creative sales associate convinced her that the price of a big-ticket item was totally worth it. Francis Nicasio spent more than she planned for a new bed and mattress. The higher cost was due to the bed’s adjustable base; one that allows the user to sit up or recline easily. “The associate was able to justify the cost to me,” Nicasio wrote. “She explained it would be perfect for someone who uses her laptop a lot in bed – I happened to mention that I’m always typing away on my computer, even in the bedroom. She tailored her recommendation to my specific needs and I genuinely appreciated her suggestion. I use the bed’s feature all the time.” Bob Phibbs offered this example about a woman who balked at spending $100 on a special dress. “She

vices and let them play with it right in your store. Give them a sample to take home. Phibbs thinks the “I don’t need it” excuse happens when the customer doesn’t trust the sales associate, or feels that the associate is trying to sell him the wrong product. “One easy way to build trust is the Feel, Felt, Found method: ‘I understand how you feel about this product, buying something expensive, etc. I felt the same way too until I purchased it and found that it gave me beautiful results, saved me time, etc.’
thought she might only wear it twice, and saw it as essentially costing her $50 each time,” he explains. “Once we understood her reasoning, we helped her find one she could wear more often; one she could wear from daytime into nighttime. We changed our dialog and emphasized how smart she would feel about her purchase.”
“I’m happy with what I currently use.” Artists are notorious for raising this barrier when you try to sell them something new. It results from a resistance to change, Nicasio believes – human beings like to remain in their comfort zone. She recommends overcoming the issue with these tactics. 1. Show shoppers how much better their life can be with the new product. Figure out the shortcomings of the brand or product they’re using currently, and talk about how the product you’re recommending addresses those issues. 2. Eliminate their risk by allowing customers to try a product before buying. Demo it
“If you remain curious about why the shopper is in your store today, you will be able to build trust,” he says. “Keep asking questions and then change gears if you have to. Make sure you’re speaking the same language so the shopper hears you and understands. If you can bond with her as an individual first, you can whittle down her choices from the many you have to offer to the one that’s just right.”
“I need to think about it.” When you hear this objection, don’t make the situation uncomfortable by trying to rush the sale or dissuade the customer, advises Nicasio. Instead, accept their response by saying, “I understand,” or “No problem,” to put them at ease. “You may get a chance to address their underlying concern or give them a nudge in the right direction,” she says. “What do they need to think about? Is it an issue with price? Are they wary of encountering problems with the product? “On the other hand, if you already know the reason, and you did your best to alleviate that concern, then you should give them time to consider their decision. Perhaps you can instill a sense of urgency by saying, ‘Just

a reminder – our sale ends next week,’ or something similar.” “If the customer could have waited to make the purchase, he would have bought it online,” says Phibbs. It could be that the sales associate offered too many choices. “That leads to confusion, and a confused mind can’t make a decision for something worth more than a Frappuccino.” It could also be the direct result of not asking clearly and directly for the sale, he adds. “If a shopper says, ‘I’ll wait,’ ask him what he will do if he doesn’t get it today. It helps the shopper see that the problem will continue unless he moves forward now.”

“The old way to make a sale was to shower customers with every feature you could think of in hopes that one of them would magically resonate,” concludes Phibbs. “But it’s 2018. Shoppers are walking into your store knowing more about your products than you do. Unless you can engage a shopper and build enough confidence to become their trusted advisor, understand what their need really is, compare and contrast various products to deal with price sensitivity and, ® simply ask for the sale, you’ll yes, probably struggle with closing more sales.”

Degree Decree How educated should our employees be? by Tina Manzer
The U.S. Department of Labor has released its latest numbers, and unemployment rates are holding firm at 3.7 percent, a nearly 50-year low. Owners of independent stores know what that means – it’s really hard to find great talent right now. Entrepreneur and best-selling author Danny Iny suggests that in order to get the qualified help that they need, companies should change their standards. They need to consider applicants who don’t have a college degree. You may or may not require that your store’s employees be college graduates, but consider this: if the choice on a hire came down to two candidates – one who lists a college education on his resume and one who does not – which person would you choose?
22
It’s the “I have a degree, therefore I am smart, hardworking and well-to-do” bias, says Iny, CEO of online business education company Mirasee. “Not only are there plenty of smart young people out there who are choosing not to follow the traditional path, those who do follow it often don’t have the skills employers need.” In August, Glassdoor revealed that some of America’s biggest companies had stopped requiring college degrees for many entry and midlevel jobs. The jobs ranged from barista to “Apple Genius” and “senior manager of finance” at companies that include Apple, Google, Bank of America, Penguin Random House, Home Depot, Costco, Whole Foods, and Starbucks, according to an article in National Review. “Why were firms requiring college degrees for such jobs in the first place?” the article asked. “Is there good reason to believe that having a B.A. in sociology or women’s studies makes one more qualified to be a stocker at Costco or shift supervisor at Starbucks?” “No,” of course, was the answer. What’s more, over-credentialing is bad for workers and for businesses, according to a 2017 study by researchers at Harvard Business School. They found that college graduates filling middle-skill positions cost more to employ, have higher turnover rates, tend to be less engaged, and are no more productive than high-school graduates doing the same job. “Degree inflation” occurs when an employer requires a baccalaureate degree for a middle-skill job that previously didn’t require one, says the study. It is estimated that degree inflation encompassed 6.2 million jobs across dozens of industries. More

than 60 percent of employers surveyed admitted to having rejected applicants with the requisite skills and experience simply because they lacked a college degree. “Today, thousands of employers use college degrees as a convenient way to screen and hire job applicants, even when postsecondary credentials bear no obvious connection to job duties or performance,” said National Review. Iny agrees. “It makes no sense to cling to old hiring practices when we live and work in a whole new world.” The presence of a degree is a signal; a psychological shortcut that enables us to make good decisions without doing the exhaustive research needed to investigate every option, he adds. “But signals can lose their meaning, and that’s what has been happening for some time now.” In his new book, Leveraged Learning: How the Disruption of Education Helps Lifelong Learners and Experts with Something to Teach, Iny suggests that employers can
make good hires by shifting their mindset to override the degree signal. To replace it as a screening device, he suggests these ideas. Take a long, hard look at what really leads to success in your business, and revise job postings to reflect the stuff that actually does matter. Drop the application tracking system, or at least switch off the filtering related to education. “Consider candidates who have pursued progressive, cutting-edge education options; hybrid programs like the one offered by Minerva Schools at Keck Graduate Institute, ‘last mile’ training offered by MissionU, or a program like Praxis, whose slogan is ‘The degree is dead. You need experience.’” How about ditching the résumé requirement? People often embellish the truth (or outright lie) on resumes. Instead, ask candidates to fill out an online application that includes behavior questions. Some candidates might have exactly the qualities you want but don’t come across well on a resume. Also ask candidates to perform a few tasks that simulate the job. Choose ones that give you a sense of what candidates can bring to the table. Build them into your online application – it will make narrowing down the list much easier. For more complicated jobs, consider paying a candidate to take on a project. Or, hire someone on a contract basis to make sure they have the right stuff before you extend a more permanent offer. During the interview, focus mostly on chemistry and culture fit. The interview can really tell you how well you’ll get along with the person. Mostly let the candidate do the talking. Finally, cultivate the things that matter by developing a culture of learning and growth. While it’s important to find the right candidates, it’s even more important to make sure you continue to develop people after you hire them.
Danny Iny is best known for his value-driven approach to business. He’s published eight other books in addition to Leveraged Learning. They include Engagement from Scratch, The Audience Revolution, and two editions of Teach and Grow Rich. For more information, visit mirasee.com.

Meet Paint Puck, the art supply industry’s proudest new product developer. Started in 2016 by a 22-year-old aerospace engineer, the first Paint Puck was introduced to the market after its founders used improper badges to sneak into NAMTA 2017. Low-quality prototypes were dispersed to attendees, and ever since, Paint Puck has climbed up the industry’s awareness ladder through tradeshows, social media, and positive product reviews. Despite Paint Puck’s lighthearted façade, the company is equipped with powerful software, R&D equipment, and diverse skill sets. This allows for all packaging, graphic, and product design to be done in-house with blistering turnaround times!

After 25 years of building and selling wood stretchers, Marvin Siegel from Tri-Mar made the decision to forgo the wood stretcher for an aluminum stretcher that he personally designed. It was a bold move three-plus years ago, but today the Tri-Mar Aluminum Stretcher is the choice of major artists in New York. It can be simply joined and assembled with a power drill when purchased pre-sized. If you wish to stock the bars to cut and join yourself, a chop saw is all that’s needed. Be part of the Tri-Mar team and learn how you, too, can sell the Tri-Mar stretcher in your marketplace. Call Marvin or Jonathan.

The company was founded in 1960 by artists and art teachers Harold and Kiki Rabinowitz, who were inspired by the popularity of the lessons they taught using recycled telephone wire. A tool called the Candymelter, invented in the 1970s, melts chocolate for cake and candy. All products are made in the USA! Today, their daughter Sandy Rabinowitz manages the business. NAMTA Member

Three Programs Receive Namta’s Art Advocacy Grants New Art Advocacy Grants recognized each of three outstanding programs with a $2,500 grant. They were awarded to applicants who support the arts in one of four categories: public art, art education, the military, and health & healing. 1. Supporting Art Education, Lindy Casebier, executive director of Louisville Visual Art, received $2,500 for expenses for Children’s Fine Art Classes (CFAC). The hands-on visual art experience for Louisville’s youth is an after-school program hosted at K-12 schools and youth centers. Now in its 93rd year, CFAC has inspired area designers and artists including William Porter, who became chief studio designer at General Motors (he made his mark with the 1968 Pontiac GTO and the 1970-73 Firebird 400). Sculptor Ed Hamilton, another CFAC alum, found opportunity

Supporting Health & Healing, Mary Curry Mettenbrink, executive director of Young Audiences of Houston, received $2,500 to support the organization’s free program for children undergoing treatment at local children’s hospitals. For more than 20 years, its programming has used the power of the arts to spread joy, give hope, manage pain, support treatment, and leave positive memories for hospitalized children and their caregivers. Young Audiences Healing Arts programs also serve homeless youth who face challenges. For them, the arts have become a valuable tool for creation, discovery, expression, hope and healing. 3. Lansing, Michigan, received $2,500 for Creative Connections. The before/afterschool program gives Lansing children ages 6 to 12 the chance to engage at no charge with local artists for integrated art learning. Up to 100 students will have the opportunity to enroll in one term or semester of the program. Goals include building the student’s confidence, and providing art experiences to develop decision-making and problem solving skills. “We were delighted with the quality and creativity of the more than two dozen applications we received in the first year of this program,” said Leah Siffringer, manager of Namta’s Art Advocacy program. “We had the support of an excellent panel of member-judges, who carefully reviewed each entry before narrowing the winners to these three.” To fund the awards, $1,000 was earned from sales of Art Matters merchandise, and two Namta members – Colart and Fredrix Artist Canvas – contributed a total of $5,100 to the program. Plans to seek additional sponsors for the 2019 awards are in the works, says Siffringer.
Art for What Ails You Trendwatching reports that The Montreal Museum of Fine Art (MMFA) has partnered with the Médecins francophones du Canada doctors’ organization to let doctors write prescriptions for museum visits. Medical professionals can now write a maximum of 50 prescriptions, which will grant each patient an admission-free trip to the museum. The doctors involved explain that visiting a museum is therapeutic. Viewing great art – especially awe-inspiring art – can change a person’s outlook, inspire a sense of

hope and reduce stress. It can also boost the immune system and raise serotonin levels. Based on this innovative idea, Trendwatching offers three trend-driven takeaways for retailers.
Go ahead. Spread wellbeing. The program is another example of getting healthy – emotionally and physically – in novel ways that range from cardio-meets-CPR fitness classes in
Thailand to STI testing at music festivals in New Zealand. The fact that your AM store is not a traditional wellness brand shouldn’t stop you from this type of innovating, says Trendwatching. For instance, to combat loneliness in Britain, described as a “silent epidemic,” the Costa Coffee chain of coffee shops launched its “chatter and natter” tables. One table in each shop is dedicated to those on their own looking for someone to chat with. Commit heritage heresy Fine art is often seen as elitist and exclusive, but this move from the MMFA will bring new audiences through its doors. Who knows where it might lead for some first-time visitors? In a similar vein, the New York Public Library’s Insta Novels retell classic novels via Instagram Stories. What industry or brand traditions could you break, to reach new audiences? Create credible collaborations Many people have never experienced the joy of consuming art. The benefits of doing so are not immediate, tangible or easy to articulate. But when the advice comes from your doctor, skepticism and resistance are broken down. How can you refuse a prescription for visiting a museum for free – you have nothing to lose! Which partners could help you remove the barriers preventing shoppers, children, seniors, students and others from trying your products?
