I
would like to think of myself as rational and reasonably sophisticated, but if I’m going to be honest I have to admit that I am at least as superstitious as the average person and probably worse. Sometimes it even spills over into my column. For example, I seem to believe that you can jinx things by talking about them. In the same way that baseball players don’t say a word when their pitcher has a no-hitter going into the sixth inning, I don’t mention it when the economy is on a roll. I especially avoid talking about run-ups in the stock market, in print or anywhere else. So let’s just say that the economy, not only in the U.S. but throughout the industrialized world, has expanded more rapidly over the past year. I will stipulate that there are no guarantees going forward. Believe it or not, even brickand-mortar retail is growing, albeit very slowly, all the talk about a “retail apocalypse” notwithstanding. More stores have opened this year than closed, and nine of the top 10 retailers have reported an increase in sales. Walmart is up about 8 percent. As business owners we tend to think of an improved economy in terms of our own sales, hoping that the rising tide will indeed lift all boats, but there are wider implications that can also have an effect on our businesses. There is one in particular that has been on my mind a lot lately. The post-World War II “baby
TOUCH OF GREY boom” ran from 1946 to 1964, which means that surviving boomers are somewhere between 53 and 71 years old. Each day in America, approximately 10,000 people turn 65, which is the traditional retirement age. The average retirement age is actually thought to be around 63. Either way it’s a lot of people, but I suspect that the real number may be much higher than that over the next several years. In December we will mark the 10th anniversary of the “Great Recession,” which was punctuated by the financial crisis and stock market meltdown in the fall of 2008. At that point the 75 million boomers were just starting to reach retirement age. The recession changed everything. Retirement savings accounts, like IRAs and 401ks, dropped precipitously, and the yield on money market accounts and other fixed-income securities dropped to near zero. The housing market collapsed, wiping out trillions of dollars in home equity and leaving millions of people “underwater” on their mortgages. Finally things have started to turn around for many of those who got blindsided by the worst recession since the 1930s. Their nest egg has been restored, their house is a saleable asset, and their kids have careers. They are also 10 years older. If I sound sympathetic to these people, I should because I’m one of them. Born near the height of the baby boom in 1953, I will turn 65 in a few months. continued on page 6

When you’re young, say in your 30s, and you start saving for retirement, you envision some sort of extended vacation in which you can indulge in all your favorite activities on a daily basis. You’ll play tennis or golf, bike or backpack, travel the world or dance the night away in exotic locales. You just have to invest wisely to make sure you’ll be able to afford it all. I remember an episode of “The Twilight Zone” in which a ruthless old tycoon was offered one wish, and he wished that he could go back to the bottom of the heap and have the opportunity to climb his way to the top all over again. He neglected to ask for youth, so when he was transported back to his beginnings he was too weak and tired to rise up through the ranks of business. So that’s the problem. I still play tennis and golf, but I couldn’t do those things every day if you paid me. As far as world travel goes, I have found that the everyday hassles of traveling get less tolerable as I get older. When I think back on my days on the road in sales it’s hard to believe I really lived like that. I must have had a strong stomach. At any rate, it’s become increasingly clear to me that my retirement will not be the physically demanding marathon of activity that I had pictured. If I want to be happy and fulfilled in my later years, I will need to find something productive that I can do at home. Most of my friends are aging baby boomers as well, and I have found myself watching them carefully as they’ve started to retire over the past few years. The first thing I noticed is that they had a hard time letting go of their professions, staying on part-time or consulting or whatever. Once they finally give up the security blanket they seem to fall into one of two groups. In one group are the guys who have a lot of hobbies, and they just divvy up the extra time continued on page 8

among things they have done all their lives. This group always tells me they’re doing great, and they look it. The other group doesn’t have a clue at first, but eventually they figure something out. One good route is nonprofit organizations and charities, which will suck up your free time and make you feel as though you’re doing something worthwhile. Maybe an all-of-the-above strategy is the best way to go, or as my father used to say, “Everything in moderation.” In order to do that, however, I will still need to

develop a passion for an arthritisfriendly pastime. Former President George W. Bush might be a good role model in that regard. Like me, he is very into playing sports, but in retirement he took up a hobby that nobody saw coming. He became a portrait painter. For several years he practiced in secret, hiring a professional artist named Gail Norfleet to teach him to paint, and later using an instructional app on his phone. Since he went public in 2013, he has acknowledged that he was inspired by Winston Churchill, and that part of his motivation was to inspire other older people to try new things. When my mother retired 30 years ago, she started taking college art classes and creating paintings as assignments. One thing I could tell the Bush family from experience is that someday the former president’s paintings will be far more valuable to them than a whole library full of memorabilia. If I’m right about the pent-up demand for retirement activities, then your business in that demographic could be headed for an upswing. For everyone’s sake, I hope so.

RED BRICK
RENAISSANCE by Tina Manzer
Francis Cabot Lowell, the father of our country’s Industrial Revolution, may be turning over in his grave. His great factories – in 1836, the largest array of textile mills the world had ever seen – are quiet now. The glorious brick buildings still dominate the landscape of Lowell, Massachusetts, but instead of churning out cotton (50 million yards of cloth each year in their heyday) they foster the production of art, one masterpiece at a time.
The only art-materials store in downtown’s cultural district shares space with the Arts League of Lowell.

In 1936, the city looked like a war zone. Mill owners were demolishing entire factory complexes or lopping off big sections of them to save on taxes. In Lowell, the Great Depression started early. Textile production had moved elsewhere, and the thriving industrial center settled into a hard and long-lasting slump. In the 1960s, a group of citizens came up with a plan to save the buildings, resuscitate their community, and stimulate the local economy. At its core was the preservation and revitalization of the city’s architectural and cultural heritage. With help from urban planners and historians, their efforts produced a renaissance, beginning with the designation of Lowell Heritage State Park in 1974, then the National Historical Park and the Historic Preservation Commission in 1978. By the early 1990s, the city was rebuilding itself with projects that included a local sports arena and two local sports franchises. But Lowell wanted working artists, if only to live up to its motto, “Art is the Handmaid of Human Good.” The city council adopted a “Convert it and they will come” philosophy; “it” being the brick mill buildings converted into affordable working studio spaces. The first open studios became available in 1982, followed by the first live/work artist spaces in 2000. In 2004, an ordinance was passed that zoned parts of downtown
“the Artist Overlay District” (AOD). The designation, updated in 2016, incentivized developers to create affordably priced live/work spaces for artists through the adaptive reuse of the mill buildings and other structures. The following year, the Western Avenue Studios complex opened. Today, its five-acres-worth of factory buildings is home to 300 artists in 250 work-only studios and 50 live/work lofts. It’s the largest artist community on the eastern seaboard. According to figures from the Cultural Organization of Lowell (COOL), there are 800 artists at work in the city. Their open studios, quirky shops and special events attract flocks of tourists.
DOWNTOWN’S ART SUPPLY OUTPOST
The Gates Block, a renovated former leather-goods factory, features 36 separate studios ranging in size from 138 to 145 square feet. On the first floor is the Arts League of Lowell (ALL) and Van Gogh’s Gear, the neighborhood’s only art materials store. The 14-year-old store is owned by Steve Syverson, who opened it “kind of on a whim.” He had just moved to Lowell from New Hampshire, and then was laid off from his tech job. “I had a good severance package, so I spent about a year thinking about what to do; drinking coffee with friends here at a local coffee shop,” he explains. “They
asked me if I was going to get another job, and said, ‘You know, we really need an art materials store …’” He stocked the original store, just around the corner from his present location, based on three factors: there wasn’t a lot of space (1,100 square feet); people buy their art supplies by brand; and he needed materials in artist grade, professional grade and student grade. “I carry only one well-known brand in each of those categories. I didn’t have room to give people a choice,” he explains. “That was my mentality then, and it still works today.” One happy customer describes the mix this way: “Van Gogh’s Gear brings joy – no junk. Everywhere there are fine surfaces, implements, and colors – in sticks, jars and tubes – all waiting for someone’s imagination! How it can all be there in such a small space is a tribute to planning and selection.” “My business model was to supply the artists in the community and meet their needs, but it didn’t take the internet into account. Professional artists know what materials work best for them so most of them order online and stock up to get discounts and free shipping,” he says. “They only come to me when they need something right away. I’m the art supply 7-Eleven.” Student business has become his bread and butter. “We recently put together 200 art kits for the

Arts league members can rent exhibit space in ALL’s gallery. Works by, from left, Arelis Jimez, Barbara Nolan and Barbara Jean Gilbert, were recently on display. ALL member Mary Hart painted the electrical box outside. Bedford campus of Middlesex Community College,” he told me. “UMass Lowell sends me its class supply lists ahead of time so I can stock the materials students require.” He’s been a picture framer for years, so in addition to artist supplies, Van Gogh’s Gear offers matting and framing, glass cutting, canvas stretching and preparation, re-stretching painted canvases, and dry-mounting and vacuum press paper mounting.

As a participant in Lowell’s art scene, the part-time sculptor does much more than sell tools and mediums. He serves on the board of COOL and is one of the founders of (ALL), a 501(c)(3) corporation with about 250 active members. He’s been the president since 2004. “I run unopposed every year! I’m going to have to resign to get someone else to take it over!” ALL couch-hopped its way around the city before it found a permanent home in 2013. “When I
heard that a developer had bought the Gates Block, I set up a meeting with him,” Steve relates. “I asked him what he was going to do with it, and he said, ‘I don’t know. I just couldn’t stand to see this beautiful building go to waste.’ The guy owns 2 million square feet of property in this town, and holds each and every one of them in reverence.” Steve suggested he build artists’ lofts on the top three floors, and a gallery for ALL and retail space for Van Gogh’s Gear. The
“I sat with the developer and the architect and we laid it out,” Steve adds. “As a payment, sort of, for helping define the building’s purpose, the developer asked me to manage the studio spaces and keep them filled with artists. They’re currently occupied by musicians, artists and writers.” Business is good at Van Gogh’s Gear, Steve says. “I’m paying the rent, paying my two part-time employees and I have money in the bank. People seem to be happy with what they get here.”
developer agreed. The two entities split the first-floor space and the rent: about two-thirds for the gallery and the rest for the store. “ALL could not afford to rent the whole space, and I had wanted to move the store anyway – my original location was ‘cottagey’ and chopped up into rooms,” he says.

Renovation continues in the Canalway Cultural District downtown. With its 16 or so retail shops, 40 dining establishments, six performance venues, 13 public parks, more than 12 public art installations, a dozen art galleries and one world-class theater, it blooms as the city’s cultural hub. Artists still migrate to Lowell, but the flood of the early years has slowed. Recently its reputation as an artists’ haven “took a hit,” says The Boston Globe, when the city decided to tax the value of its artists’ tools and materials, “from paint and canvas to workbenches and printing presses. “The tax bills are unlikely to be large – typically in the range of $200 a year,” the article continued. “Nonetheless, the move is not sitting well with some artists, many of whom were drawn to the city because of its artist-friendly reputation.”

Blown away With Sparmax airbrush equipment, artists are creating anything that requires very precise details or the smooth coverage of a large area, says Peter Liang from Sparmax. For specific examples, he directed us to California artist Daniel Barraga, who creates realism art on all kinds of substrates, from electric guitars and wine barrels to motor homes. Daniel also offers airbrushing lessons for children and adults in both group and one-on-one sessions at his studio and gallery in downtown Lodi. He uses an assortment of Sparmax airbrushes – the DH-125, the SP-35, and the SP-20X, along with the TC-620X compressor – to complete the wide variety of commissions that come in from his customers. “I’ll take on any job that’s thrown at me,” he explains. “It’s a growing process because I learn from each one.”
ArtMaterialsRetailer.com • Winter 2017
The SP-20X has recently become Daniel’s favorite. “It’s the most comfortable in my hand,” he told us. He likes to use the SP-35 to clear-coat small items. “Clear coat is very thick, but the SP-35 creates a flawless finish with it.” Compared to others on the market, Sparmax compressors are smaller in size but powerful. “The pairing of the compressor and the airbrush is very important, and greatly affects the outcome,” notes Peter Liang. “The TC-620X is very reliable,” Daniel adds. “I like the weight and the sound of it, plus having two air hoses. I can use two airbrushes very easily on a painting.” He also sells the compressors in his studio and says the feedback from his customers is positive. “You can use an airbrush on virtually any surface as long as the paint allows for it, the compressor provides a steady source of air, and the airbrush can handle the paint,” explains Peter. “We’ve even seen artists airbrushing on bird feathers! Our airbrushes and compressors have also been used to mist oxygen for facials, makeup and special effects; and to paint plush toys and repair leather.” sparmaxair.com continued on page 18

“What are artists creating with your products?”
continued from page 16
Wet & Wild Sarah Janece Garcia creates wildlife portraits and nature-inspired paintings exclusively with QoR watercolors from GOLDEN. Why QoR? “The short answer would be because of their extra vivid, dense and vibrant color,” she told us in a recent interview. “I find I am able to best focus on my vision for each piece rather than having to focus on (and work extra-hard to get) the full saturations and blends I wish to capture. QoR products, include the Mediums, offer me the ability to work with the wonderful translucent washes of traditional watercolors, while also building my subject matter with small, opaque details I enjoy placing in my paintings.” The color vibrancy of QoR comes from a special resin used as a binder in place of gum Arabic, explains Cathy Jennings, material specialist at Golden Artist Colors in New Berlin, New York. It was first patented by Dow Chemical in 1977, and licensed to another manufacturer under the brand name Aquazol. “Our first
glimpse at the new resin came from the conservation sciences and the conservators who uses the binder as an adhesive and for inpainting,” says an article in the GOLDEN newsletter, Just Paint. “What we found in our initial investigations of Aquazol was that it allowed us to create a color with the potential for greater color strength than any other professional watercolor.” That’s what Sarah needed. She had always worked in oils because of their color strength and pigment, but found herself trying to work the oils as if they were watercolors. Then QoR entered the marketplace. “The range of colors it offers, along with the ability to work the paint to stay transparent, but also build opaquely, is something my artist’s heart was very happy to find.” She prefers working on 300lb cold-press paper in large formats – she orders it in rolls. The weight provides extra support and prevents the buckling that

can occur when she’s trying to obtain deep colors. “Also, the textural pockets and grooves on the paper, along with the heavy paper’s slower absorption rate, enable the color blends to organically mix as the paint slowly absorbs.” By framing her pieces in a white frame and mat, the vibrant colors of the paint become the focal point. goldenpaints.com continued on page 20

The big picture by Tina Manzer The bigger the art the better, says Rebecca Carlson, charcoal artist and assistant editor at AMR. She loves the contrasts charcoal gives her, and the way it spreads on large surfaces. She uses products from General Pencil Company almost exclusively. “General’s products are easily accessible and inexpensive, and I go through a lot of them working on just one piece,” Rebecca says.
She begins by toning white paper – either Stonehenge or Canson Drawing Paper – with charcoal powder, which she sprinkles from the jar onto the surface and spreads evenly with a brush. Then she begins to outline the art she wants to create using General’s Factis Mechanical Eraser to erase away the tone she’s applied. “I don’t want to see the outline, I want to see the
shapes,” Rebecca explains, and adds, “Artists who work on black or gray paper use white charcoal to create their outline.” Dark areas are mapped out using vine charcoal. It’s easy to smudge, and easy to take off and add on. “In general, charcoal is a forgiving medium – another reason I like it.” Then it’s a long, slow layering process. “I don’t want to get too dark too fast,” she notes. Rebecca builds up layers using charcoal pencils. She sharpens them with an x-acto knife and, depending on the width of the line she wants to create, she’ll either make a sharp point (for fine details) or lift off the orange casing altogether to reveal the long edge of the stick (for wide sweeps). “In addition to how well – and how fast – you can cover large areas with charcoal, I enjoy the spontaneity of it and how easy it is to blend.” generalpencil.com

The only difference? Cadmium-Free is safer for artists. Recently, cadmium in paint has come into question. Some say cadmium risks artists’ health. Others say non-cadmium risks quality. But artists shouldn’t have to choose one over the other. That’s why we created the world’s first non-cadmium acrylic paint with the same brightness, color strength and opacity as cadmium paint. The innovative Liquitex Heavy Body Cadmium-Free range will be offered to artists alongside regular cadmium paints to offer artists more choice.

hen it comes to owning a fine art store, the devil is in the details. With hundreds of open-stock markers, brushes and pencils on display, not to mention tons of tiny tools and tubes of paint, the potential for disorganization is great. It’s not necessarily a bad thing – many artists say the clutter is what they like about their local art-materials store. But when disorganization results in loss – as in stolen, or literally lost and untraceable somewhere in your mix – it’s probably time for a store refresh. The gap between
22
ArtMaterialsRetailer.com • Winter 2017
back-to-school and second semester may be the perfect opportunity to do a rearrange. Here are some tips.
START WITH YOUR IMAGE The first step toward a makeover is to consider your brand. Are you and your staff old school or new age? What kinds of products and services do you offer? Is your atmosphere all hustle and bustle or totally laid back? The answers to those questions can help you with details like signage (both inside and out), décor and fixtures, and your product displays.
Remember: your customers are the kinds of folks who are attracted to all things creative, innovative and aesthetically pleasing. If your sales floor doesn’t please them, it’s time for a change – even in terms of product. Discount those items that customers have ignored for months (years?), or are unrelated to your core mix, to make more room on your shelves. One of the goals of a rearrange is to show creative shoppers that they are in exactly the right place when they walk in the door.
WALK THE WALK Your store’s physical environment impacts the way
shoppers interact with your merchandise. For instance, if the path through your store is unclear, or is blocked by half-opened boxes or products clustered together, shoppers can feel overwhelmed. It diminishes the chances they’ll be able to select their supplies for purchase. You want them to move through your aisles comfortably on a path that is clear, with enough space to step back and contemplate the products. Customers almost always turn right when they enter a store, and then proceed to shop counterclockwise. Examine how shoppers flow through your store for a few days to see where they go first … and put your high-margin items there. That spot also the perfect place for seasonal items (8.5- by 11-inch readymade diploma frames in the spring, for instance),
because you only market them for a short period of time. You want to make as much profit as possible without back stocking the items or marking them down. Map out your store by putting it down on paper. By actually drawing it and adding in all of your current display fixtures, you can visualize the product placement possibilities. The pathway through different aisles should be logical, and make products easy to find. Avoid dead zones – places where products can get overlooked (and remain unsold). Typical dead zones include the corners of your sales floor and in the center aisles. Don’t give up on the products there – just move them to a more visible location. Watch to see if your customers naturally gravitate to certain areas, and then place products there.

YOUR
SPACE
EVERYTHING IN ITS PLACE Most art materials stores carry a little bit of everything, so it helps to organize items into small departments or zones. Just make sure similar items are placed close-by for customer convenience and for add-on sales. A painter buying acrylics, for instance, should find palette knives in close proximity to the paint tubes. Consumable products, like canvas and sketch pads, should be displayed in the very back of the store. The goal is to get customers to walk back there and spot other items that they need along the way. Impulse items, especially brand new merchandise and art-materials staples, sell well when they’re placed at the register.
Staples may include X-acto knives and blades, erasers, pencil sharpeners, super glue, tape, or paint retardant. None of those require much thought or research before purchasing. Display high-theft items out in the open – it intimidates shoplifters. If you display them in spots that are visible from the register, you and your staff can keep an eye on them.
FINISHING TOUCHES Don’t overlook your lighting! A well-lit store is essential for selling color-specific products. Natural light is best, with blue light a close second. Add lamps, track lights and spotlights to showcase specific displays. Many artists like the way art
materials stores smell – a mixture of linseed oil, wet watercolor paper, brush soap, markers and new wood-encased pencils. That olfactory experience may help to keep them coming back. But if your store smells like onions from the restaurant next door or the sweaty copy-machine repairman, use scented candles, essential oils, diffusers or incense to make your customers’ shopping experience more positive. Reworking a store layout seems like a daunting task, but it has the potential to generate more foot traffic, happy customers, and more revenue. With everyone talking about the importance of the customer experience, make sure everything about your store creates a positive one.

More and more these days, public and private spaces are being designed to appeal to people who take selfies. An article on Smithsonianmag.com calls the phenomenon the “Instagramization” of the world. Restaurants are at the forefront of this movement, says the article. “Since social media mentions can make or break a restaurant’s success, owners have become attuned to what visual aspects of food and décor appeal to customers.” Eating establishments have become lighter and brighter, and restaurant walls have been designed in photo-friendly background materials like slate and whitewashed wood. Appearing on social media can also be a boon to retail stores. That’s why some encourage selfies with whimsical decor or cut-out clothing silhouettes. “In an era in which some say social media is killing traditional retail, they’re doing what they can to harness its power,” says Smithsonian. Museums have been getting into the act, too, states the article. “The Getty Museum in Los Angeles rearranged the mirrors in its decorative art gallery to make mirror selfies easier, while San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art added terraces designed as selfie spots. On its website, the Birmingham Museum of Art in Alabama describes its summer art series as ‘Instagram gold,’ and offers an online slideshow of the top places in the museum to take a selfie.” Nora Atkinson, the Lloyd Herman Curator of Craft at the Renwick gallery notes, “It’s impossible to prevent it, so why not get with the program and the 21st century and allow it as much as you can?”
“LOVING VINCENT” The 2017 biographical animated drama film is about the life of Vincent van Gogh. Each of the film’s 65,000 frames is an oil painting on canvas. They were created by 125 classically trained painters (as opposed to traditional animators) who used the same technique as the famous Dutch painter. “Loving Vincent” began development in 2008, and involved several years of testing and training before painting on the shots used in the final film began. “From various tests with computer animation we concluded that it was very important to actually, like Vincent van Gogh, paint with

The Strength of Adhesive The Convenience of Tape oils on canvas,” states lovingvincent.com. “We researched and tested nine different brands of oil paints from six manufacturers. We took into consideration quality of the paint, viscosity, how the colors came across, range of colors, and price.” Yellow was the color that mattered, the crew said. “We needed a brand that had a good range of yellows, and for the yellow to be very saturated. The tests consisted of applying paint to canvas boards and photographing them under different lighting conditions. Royal Talens Van Gogh was the obvious choice because it had the greatest range of colors, and additionally it was the cheapest of the three paints that passed our tests.” The storyboard was informed by 130 Van Gogh works. They were modified for the screen, and “sewn together, tapestry style” as a backdrop, notes movie website Rotton Tomatoes. “It’s an ever-morphing canvas that shimmers in front of your eyes.
