Dear Craft and Hobby Association Member,
W
What exactly is Creativation? The simplest answer is that Creativation is the new name of CHA’s premier creative arts industry event in North America taking place January 19-23 in Phoenix, AZ. The truth is this is so much more than just a name change; Creativation is an entirely new event. So much has changed, so quickly, in our industry in recent years. We have seen original ways to deliver ideas and to learn, ingenious methods and products competing, alternative marketing and sales channels, and brand new consumers with a unique language and entrepreneurial spirit determined to grow and expand how we see creativity in our daily lives. All of this change is considerable, and has surged through the industry with lightning speed, causing disruption, while creating opportunity. And we have heard you, our Members, as you’ve asked us to help you make sense of all the differences, guide you through an evolving landscape, help you figure out the impacts of this change to your business and to be your voice along the way. On your behalf, CHA has spent the past year conducting an extensive study of the evolving environment and your needs. No surprise, CHA’s most popular and significant member benefit has always been our Annual Conference and Trade Show. Working with Verse Group, a strategic research and creative branding firm, we examined our existing Annual Conference and Trade Show; an analysis designed to help deliver real and significant improvement. Through extensive market research, personal interviews and focused surveys with members, and non-members, we gained real insight and have shaped a creative destination at which you will find inspiration, innovation, education, celebration and countless opportunities to learn, connect and discover at the heart of creativity.
So what is Creativation? Creativation is a city, jam packed with new opportunities including: a powerful Maker Space, where traditional crafting and technology collide; the Innovations Center, a new hands-on and interactive display of never-before seen ideas, trends, methods, techniques and devices; and iDiscover Chats that are short, informative and inspiring presentations. Creativation is critical information that will be released in the 2016 Creative Products Size of the Industry Report, highlighting the size of the creative products opportunity, spending patterns of crafters, their demographic profiles and the attitudes they have toward their creative activities. Creativation is the magic of inspiration and new ways to turn ideas into actions in seminars and workshops presented by new, high-demand speakers at Creativation University. Creativation is a business destination, featuring a three day trade show with expanded product categories, including sewing, soft crafts, fabrics, patchwork and quilting, in addition to paper crafting, jewelry and beads, painting, edible arts and so much more! Creativation is you, and your creative industry peers, coming together to network, share ideas, create new opportunities, and shape our creative future. Enjoy this issue of Craft Industry Today as you learn all about Creativation. I hope you will join me, and our creative peers, for this major industry event and creative celebration! Sincerely,
Maureen Walsh Vice President, Membership and Marketing

New Start-Up Membership
We believe all creative products industry businesses should be able to share the benefits of membership – especially companies that are in their infancy and can truly profit from participation in a trade association. That’s why we introduced our new Start-up Membership category for businesses two-years old or less. For more information or to refer a business to our Start-up Membership, visit www.craftandhobby.org or contact Jeffrey Malaney at jmalaney@craftandhobby.org, or (201) 835-1213, or Jason Baum at jbaum@craftandhobby.org, or (201) 835-1218.
Membership Category Changes
In order to better serve our members, the Member Dues Committee of your Board of Directors and CHA staff developed a number of revisions to our membership categories. The revisions will allow us to provide you with more focused benefits, relevant to your specific area of interest. Over the next 18 months you will see improvements and new benefit offers that will be designed to meet and exceed your expectations. The following change was announced and effective as of July 2016: Our Creative Professionals will now be called Maker/ DIYers. If you are a current Creative Professional and you feel that the new name does not describe your business, you may select from two other new categories: Blogger/ Pinner or Educator/Demonstrator. Our Designer category remains unchanged. If you are a Creative Professional and feel you belong in the Designer category, please contact us directly so we can qualify you. Dues amounts remain unchanged as well. If you have any questions or would like to adjust your membership category, contact Jeffrey Malaney at jmalaney@craftandhobby.org or (201) 835-1213.
Webinar Wednesday Returns This Fall

Take advantage of our travel resources, bulk rates and discounts. As a member attending or exhibiting at Creativation, you can easily find a discounted hotel room through our one and only housing partner, onPeak! onPeak is a company that helps trade associations like us provide convenient and affordable hotel accommodations for their events. Beware of unauthorized hotel solicitations that are not associated with onPeak. Note which hotels will have shuttle service to/from the Phoenix Convention Center and which properties are considered walkable prior to booking. All CHA members have a free shuttle to the Phoenix Convention Center from our satellite hotels and can save $2 off one-way trips and $4 off round-trips on the SuperShuttle from the Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport! Visit our hotel and travel page at www.CreativationShow.org to book your trip with SuperShuttle. Flying to Phoenix? Early birds who catch the first flight out and night owls who take the redeye can find great deals. If you fly mid-week you can save even more. If you don’t mind taking the long road, make your finance department happy and book a flight with connections – you’ll knock a few more bucks off your airfare and get to explore another city in the United States! And, before you click “book,” look at the cost of two, one-way flights. Sometimes it turns out to be cheaper!

Use your exclusive CHA member benefits with Avis and Budget to receive reduced car rental rates. Login to your CHA member account at www.craftandhobby.org to find the discount codes you need to book your rental! As much as we love to be spontaneous, another way to save is to plan where to eat. Find out where the locals eat to avoid the high-priced tourist attractions, or split a dish with a friend or colleague. Since we all are deserving of a good meal now and again, treat yourself to a nice lunch – restaurants tend to price their lunches cheaper than their dinner plates! Go to the “Things to Do in Phoenix” page at www.CreativationShow.org to start exploring your meal options! Phoenix is known for live music, rooftop lounges, museums, theaters, art galleries, The Arizona Science Center and more than 100 restaurants. Cityscape, a two-block concentration of eateries, bars and live-music venues is the perfect way to unwind after a day of walking the trade show floor.
Plan your Phoenix excursions before and after Creativation by visiting the “Things to Do in Phoenix” page at www.CreativationShow.org. Book your hotel through onPeak early to find the best rates for our event. Be sure to check out our website as the date gets closer for more exciting news!

I have been with the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA) for close to 11 years and I have been inspired by the remarkable people and innovative products I have been exposed to. As individuals and an organization, we need to adapt to change and constantly look for ways to progress. It is in this spirit of continued growth and innovation that CHA launches Creativation, an interactive experience where you can learn, connect and discover new horizons in the ever-evolving creative industry. So how is this event different? What will be unique that we have not seen in the past? We are breaking the “mold” of what a traditional trade show is designed to deliver. Here is what is new for 2017.
2016 Creative Products Size of the Industry Study Findings: Our dynamic presentation will reveal unique industry and consumer insights, including the size of the creative products opportunity, spending patterns of crafters, their demographic profiles and the attitudes they have toward their creative activities. This seminar will be presented by Leatrice Eiseman, prime consultant to Pantone.
S208: Visual Storytelling: Strategies to Engage Through Live Video Periscope, Blab, YouNow, Facebook Live ... the list keeps growing. Live video has taken the social media world by storm. If you dare to experiment, we’ll have a technology area where you’ll discover how easy it is to craft with start-of-the-art equipment like a 3D printer. When you want to take a break, you can just walk next door to the Lecture Hall to sit and watch demos or get inspired by innovative thinkers talking in our new iDiscover Chats. Introduce our readers to NexxtShow and tell them what you do for the Craft & Hobby Association (CHA). “NexxtShow is what happens when an expert group of trade show professionals decides to form a new kind of company – and change all the rules. Like CHA and its exhibitors, we’re not content with the ‘trade shows as usual’ mindset and the traditionally expensive ways of doing business. While other decorators think that these things can’t or shouldn’t be changed – we’re already changing them. We work with CHA and all of your exhibitors to produce an exciting, effective event from start to finish, from an empty convention center to a beautifully decorated, invigorating show. Our goal is to raise customer service to an art form, bring value and help increase ROI for exhibitors.”
How did NexxtShow work with CHA on reinventing our show and how is our “city set up” unique? “Most of our clients like CHA do one or two shows a year and possibly attend a few others; we see and produce hundreds of shows annually. With that kind of exposure to what works and what doesn’t work, we

You’ve rushed through the convention center doors on opening Jean Knotts day to be greeted by an amazing show floor layout complete with bright lights and a sea of color. Have you ever stopped and wondered what is involved with building a trade show from the bare floors up? We caught up with Jean Knotts, the National Sales Manager at NexxtShow, to see what it takes to conceptualize a trade show vision into a reality!
8/30/16 4:20 PM
a vibe that’s different from any other show because it’s as much about form as it is function. The floor plan is designed to increase traffic flow and engage attendees; there are exciting interactive opportunities spread across the halls, and the show look is completely fresh. All of this will come together to make Creativation a work of art in and of itself.”
How do you work with a company looking to switch up their show from the “same old show” to taking it to the next level? “This is easy for us; we tell ALL of our clients that S.A.L.Y. (Same As Last Year) doesn’t work here. We’re always looking to do more of what worked well. We’re always open to change, and we want to know what our clients think needs improvement. As trends change, we need to help our clients recognize them and get out in front of them.”
What are the key changes you’ve observed in the trade show industry over the past few years? “We have noticed that exhibitors are getting better at managing costs and expecting a faster return on their investment in participating in a trade show. NexxtShow is constantly working to provide a suite of services to lower the cost barrier to entry so that exhibitors can focus on investing budget resources into face-to-face campaigns instead of service or material handling costs.”
What does it take to redesign a trade show set up? “It starts with exhibitor and attendee marketing. We need to set the stage that paints a picture of what it will be like to participate in the event. Floor plans are developed to maximize energy and flow on the show floor. NexxtShow designers work with CHA’s team to translate their ideas into conceptual
graphics and structures: a process that produces the overall show look and feel. When the time comes for the final build, we look to over-deliver, and give more than the client has imagined for less than they expected.”
When redesigning a trade show, what is the most important thing to keep in mind and why? “That the experience on-site relates to the concepts and materials used from the very beginning of the trade show planning process. This is crucial as it steers attendee and exhibitor numbers. This has to be integrated from start to finish, and has to change or evolve every year to keep the experience fresh and exciting. Each year, the show needs to be creative, so that an exhibitor or attendee knows that they can’t afford to miss the next show. CHA is a perfect partner for us on this – the creativity never stops flowing!”

NexxtShow Case Study: AudiologyNOW! “The American Academy of Audiology (AAA) is the world’s largest professional organization for Audiologists. As one of the founding clients of NexxtShow, AAA has been working with us since 2011 to transform and produce their annual event, AudiologyNOW!, which is the largest trade show in their industry. Like many show organizers, AAA was seeking a fresh, new look for their event, and NexxtShow has delivered every year. In partnership with NexxtShow’s team, AudiologyNOW! has been forefront in bringing cutting-edge technologies to their exhibitors, along with out-of-the box design incorporating bold colors, lighting, and exciting graphics to drive attendance. We’ve helped AAA increase turnout by over 50% over the past years. As a little added bonus, AudiologyNOW! 2016 was held in Phoenix – so we’re familiar with the facility, which takes some of the stress off of CHA and their exhibitors.”

Creative Entrepreneur Numbers on the
Rise
Increasing numbers of entrepreneurs in the creative arts industries could make the term “starving artist” a thing of the past.

While the tech industry is known for innovative start-ups-turned-staples like Apple and Google, the creative arts industry is no slouch when it comes to successful entrepreneurs. By its nature, this industry is innovative, inventive, and of course creative, so it’s no surprise it spurs on a variety of entrepreneurs. Over the years, business start-ups have been common in the craft and hobby industry, but in recent years, those numbers have continued to rise. Artists being self-employed is nothing new; in fact, it’s more common for creative artists to be self-employed than it is for those in other industries. While the United States national average of self-employment is about 10.1%, about 34% of artists are self-employed. Talented artists are in no short supply, but there is more to being a successful entrepreneur than talent. Business acumen is needed, including an ability to network and manage your time, an understanding of accounting, marketing and promotion, legal know-how and more. Passion and tenacity are also important keys to business success,
and that is where creative artists are nearly unmatched as business owners--their strong love for creativity and expression often fuel them during the sometimes lean times that can come at the beginning of building their businesses and brands. The economic environment since 2008 has helped creative entrepreneurs flourish as well. Small business ownership and entrepreneurship are on the rise overall; in fact, according to the Pew Research Institute, in 2014, three in 10 U.S. jobs are held by those who are self-employed and their employees. New business establishments that allow entrepreneurs to rent space inexpensively for business meetings and collaboration have become widespread, giving small business owners opportunities to have professional places to conduct business, further helping them get ahead. And the market opens up for customers of creative pursuits in difficult economic times, helping their businesses thrive. With all of these factors in their favor, it seems that creative arts entrepreneurs are poised to continue to grow and succeed.
Creative Entrepreneurs Speak From the biggest corporations to the smallest start-ups, CHA is the creative destination for the education, training and insights you need to transform ideas into actions to accelerate your business growth. Companies that have been in business for less than two years are now eligible for a discounted Start-up Membership. Find out what some of CHA’s newest Start-up members feel is most rewarding about being a creative entrepreneur. Aditi and Sunila Mahajan of Dots to Lines, DotsToLinesBlog.WordPress.com “It’s never easy being a creative entrepreneur and surviving in the field; however, we have, and it’s because of the smiles we get in return for our work. The appreciation and just the expression a person has when viewing our product is heart rushing. Apart from this, our biggest reward has been our personal growth and development as creative artists, as this passion always gets us out of the bed and going to achieve greater heights.” Amber Kemp-Gerstel of Damask Love, DamaskLove.com “I am most rewarded by the trust and creative freedom given to me by the brands I work with. They trust my creative vision and allow me to showcase their products in my own unique way with very little restriction. They want me to put my own spin on their product, which feels great!” Do you know someone who is thinking about starting a creative arts product business or has been in business for less than two years? Refer them to CHA to become a member and we’ll give you $25 if they join! Contact Jason Baum, Director of Membership, at 201-835-1218 or jbaum@craftandhobby.org for more information.

With the buzz about Phoenix, you’ve probably asked people you know who have visited the city for recommendations of what to expect, what to do and where to go. Yet, they may have not visited Phoenix for business. Here, we’re sharing more about the places we selected to host our 2017 Creativation
events. By the time you’re done reading this article, you’ll know more about the creative destinations you’ll visit in January!
Phoenix Convention Center Inspired by the turquoise and red hues of the Grand Canyon, the Phoenix Convention Center
is not your typical “concrete box” of a convention center. Our friends at the Convention & Visitor Bureau (CVB) describe the site as a giant neighborhood with three ballrooms, an executive conference center, an adjoining hall that seats over 2,000 visitors, and just shy of 100 meeting rooms.
As you travel through the building, you’ll be surrounded by natural light, air-conditioned rooms and even areas outside where you can meet, relax and enjoy Phoenix’s sunny, winter weather. Plus, with an award-winning catering staff, you know you’ll find a good bite to eat in between workshops and seminars.

Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel Photo courtesy of the Phoenix Convention & Visitor Bureau
Sheraton Phoenix Downtown Hotel The CVB names the Sheraton Phoenix Downtown as “the biggest of downtown Phoenix’s hotels.” With 1,000 guest rooms (plenty of room for your colleagues and family or friends who may tag along), you’ll enjoy the Sheraton’s rooftop sundeck and lap pool before and after our Creativation education programs and events. When you’re in the mood for classic American cuisine, take the elevator down to its restaurant, District American Kitchen and Wine Bar, to dine in open-air patio seating, and enjoy live entertainment and local artwork. The Sheraton is conveniently located in the center of the city, adjacent to the Phoenix Convention Center and just five miles from Sky Harbor International Airport. Plus, during your stay you’ll get complimentary in room Internet.
Arizona Science Center

Our Creativation Celebration (formerly the CHA Foundation Gala) will be held at the Arizona Science Center. In addition to eating, drinking, honoring our industry’s finest and benefiting the Kids in Need Foundation, this year we can promise you a more interactive evening. During our celebration you’ll experience CREATE, a place where you’ll get inspired and educated through hands-on activities and making. If one night is not enough – don’t worry. We’ve partnered with CREATE on our Maker Space. You’ll have the opportunity to experience the power of creative collaboration throughout the duration of Creativation.
Turn the page to read what some of our Arizona members have to say about their state and this city. Learn more about what you can experience in Phoenix on our hotel and travel page at www.CreativationShow.org.

Thoughts on Phoenix “Phoenix, especially downtown Phoenix, is teeming with arts and culture everywhere you look. From murals to galleries, shops, bars, indie eateries, everything has a clever, artful spin. It's the perfect place for creatives to get inspired for not only crafty ideas, but big picture ideas too. So much inspiration all in one place!” Lifelong Phoenix resident, Kathy Cano-Murillo, The Crafty Chica “On a dark desert highway, cool wind in my hair ... The desert has always been a source of inspiration for creatives to sing about and to celebrate. Phoenix is a creative hot-spot in the way that it both honors ancient tradition and welcomes modern makers. Whether you are interested in Native American and Western art, architecture by Frank Lloyd Wright, vintage flea markets and art festivals, or craft beers and maker spaces, there is something for everyone in this city! (By the way, that ‘dark desert highway’ is toll-free!)” Brooke Roe, Founder, Pinspiration “Phoenix in January has great weather for outdoor activities, and sunsets bring on those cooler and starry nights. The atmosphere is positive with a diverse population
representing people from all walks of life. There are numerous reasonably priced restaurants, hotels, entertainment arenas and casinos. Phoenix is also known as a major consumer products test market and its shopping selections will confirm that. The posted speed limit on the highway is up to 75 mph and within an hour, you can feel the freedom of just experiencing sights and sounds you alone have created. From the architectural experiments of Arcosanti north of Phoenix or the ghost town of Jerome, to the beauty of Sedona, or even just some horseback riding in Wickenburg; Arizona boasts a number of national parks and monuments, and just plain open spaces. This constantly evolving city is bound to renew creativity and energy for those that come to visit.” Bob and Halina Tepper, Halina The Button Sculptor “Phoenix is one of the best-kept secrets! Metropolitan atmosphere without the price tag. Best Mexican food outside of Sonora, Mexico. Perfect temperatures, no jackets, no coats, no problem. When is the last time you looked up and actually saw the stars? Yep, clear skies and no pollution! Short distance to one of the Seven Wonders of the World, the Grand Canyon. Some of the best shopping in the USA right in Scottsdale.” MicheleEmerson-Roberts, Michele Designs

Creativation is the place where our industry comes to discover new products. Last year, over 80 exhibiting companies showcased over 130 new products in our Hot Product Showcase, competing to win the hearts of buyers and being crowned a 2016 Hot Product winner or finalist. You’ll recognize some of the awarded finalists included here from seeing them at our event and on retailers’ shelves. For 2017, we’ve developed two new programs for suppliers of all sizes to maximize new product launches at Creativation, the capital of the creative products industry.
New Product Showcase
Innovations Center
Prime advertising space is available at a great value starting from $250! The New Product Showcase will feature exhibitors’ new products released within 12 months prior to Creativation. In addition to being the first thing that buyers will see at the Phoenix Convention Center, we’ll have a New Product Reception on Friday, January 20, before the show floor opens, where participating suppliers and buyers can network and discuss the new products on display.
Are you or someone you know creating, designing or making an innovation that will be revolutionary, break the mold or provide a strategic advantage? The Innovations Center is an interactive area on the show floor where start-ups can exhibit and unveil their innovations at the center of the creative universe at no cost. A judging panel will select five innovators exhibiting here to pitch their innovation for a chance to win $10,000 and winning the title of top creative innovation of 2017.
For more information about launching your products through our new programs, visit www.CreativationShow.org or contact Kristen Farrell at kfarrell@craftandhobby.org.
